00:09Including thousands of cigarette and tobacco sticks for mobile phone and flash drive.

00:22Alan, thousands of smugglers who were caught by the police in Metro Manila are now under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, NCR.

00:33These smugglers have 34,000 sticks of cigarettes, 62 mints of tobacco, 200 mobile phones and several pieces of flash drives.

00:44Alan, these smugglers were caught by the BJMT-NCR in their sticks within a year.

00:52BJMT-NCR Regional Director Roscoe Tang-Jerez said that if we compare it to the previous year, the number of smugglers has decreased

01:01because of the use of cigarettes. They caught and smuggled more than 38,000 sticks in 2023. Here is his statement.

01:12The number of smugglers is decreasing because of the efforts of our personnel.

01:18They were caught because they were involved in a number of crimes that were filed against them.

01:30Alan, aside from the target of the BJMT, which is to reduce smuggling, they are also smuggling and destroying.

01:37The BJMT said that they are using their sticks to have a lead in illegal activities inside prisons,

01:46like the smuggled cellphones, where they can get information on smugglers and smugglers of illegal drugs inside prisons.

01:56One of the reasons why smugglers have decreased is because they are doing a strict search on smugglers.

02:04But the BJMT-NCR explained that this is not random or mandatory. For their occupation, they are just doing this if the smugglers agree.

02:16There needs to be a permission, there needs to be an order from the warden to do a strict search.

02:22But that is voluntary. Meaning, subject to the visitor. If he doesn't want to, he cannot enter. We are not forcing him.

02:31So if he is subject to a strict search, we are telling the visitor that you are subject to a strict search.

02:37We have information that you are one of the suspected smugglers.

02:44Ala, the BJMT-NCR is calling on the local government units for the smuggling of smuggled drugs inside the city jails.

02:53I hope that the LGUs will be punished.

02:57The smuggling and destruction of smuggled drugs was done at the same time as the National Correctional Consciousness Week held by the BJMT-NCR.
