00:31But if you do want to go see the Patriots, GameTime, that's the place for you.
00:35So go check out our two sponsors.
00:38I'm Evan Maranofsky. That's Connor Ryan.
00:40Connor, what is up?
00:42Evan, I'm doing well. How are you doing?
00:45Doing great. Doing great.
00:47Great to see the Bruins out in a new arena out in Utah.
00:51Or facing a new franchise, the Utah Hockey Club.
00:55It's a late Saturday night game.
00:57Kind of a dud.
00:592-1 loss. Overtime.
01:01You know, the hype of a season is so fun.
01:04And then you forget about those sort of like, those away games that are just kind of like,
01:09eh, not much happened.
01:11You know, like a late night Saturday game, or you know, late Wednesday or Thursday game
01:15where it's like, eh, not much.
01:17Not much took place there.
01:19Bruins though, Montgomery not happy with his team's performance at all.
01:23They had a really tough practice on Sunday.
01:25I was reading your colleague Jim McBride's story of, you know, how that went.
01:30Montgomery, there was an interesting comment Montgomery made.
01:33Because the Bruins are now 3-2-1.
01:35And, you know, some people are kind of concerned about that record.
01:38Montgomery's not really concerned about the record.
01:40A lot of teams are sort of in that same spot of, you know, just sort of middling team.
01:46But he's more concerned with sort of that.
01:49He mentions process, which I think to most people means you're not winning your battles.
01:55You know, out teams are out skating you.
01:58Which that is concerning.
02:01You saw that a little bit Saturday.
02:03You saw that a good amount Saturday against the, I keep wanting to call them by a name.
02:07But the Utah Hockey Club.
02:08Utah, yeah.
02:09I think it's Utah.
02:10Utah HC.
02:11The HC, yes.
02:12Those jerseys, by the way.
02:13Oof.
02:14Need a little more spice.
02:16A little touch up, yeah.
02:18A little seasoning.
02:19What do you think, though?
02:20What do you think about where they're at right now?
02:22Yeah, I mean, I think it's very much a work in progress in terms of building this team's identity.
02:28And what their approach has to be on the ice.
02:30It's funny.
02:31You almost look at how great they were last year.
02:34And especially how strong they started.
02:36If you, like, flipped, like, in terms of expectations, I would have fully expected last year was going to be the year where it was going to take some time to gel.
02:43Just because you had so many moving parts.
02:45You're without, you know, two key guys down the middle in Bergeron and Krejci.
02:49It was kind of a sea change in terms of just the overall core of this team.
02:53So, you expected those growing pains last year.
02:55I think it's carried over a year, maybe.
02:57And, again, overall, the body of work hasn't been great.
03:01Hasn't been a lot of 60-minute efforts.
03:03Still a work in progress in terms of, you know, I think the defense, I'm not too worried about that.
03:09Like, I think they've gotten better from early on in the year in terms of especially net front coverage.
03:14Stuff like that.
03:15But I think just the overall cohesion, especially at 5-on-5 play, just hasn't been there yet.
03:21And you're not getting a lot of quality chances because of it.
03:23And I know I'll give credit to Scott McLaughlin from WEI who did kind of the deep digging here.
03:30Looking at their 5-on-5 ranks per 60 minutes in the Bruins.
03:36They are 31st at 5-on-5 in shot attempts, 32nd in shots on goal, 30th in scoring chances, and 30th in high danger chances.
03:49So, it's one thing where I think Scott mentioned this.
03:52Like, the Bruins under Montgomery have not been a high-volume shooting team, right?
03:57Like, they're not like the Cassidy days of just putting any puck on net and see what happens.
04:03They're much more quality over quantity in terms of what they're looking for there.
04:08But you're not even doing that, right?
04:09It's one thing if you're 30th in shot attempts but you're still scoring at a high rate or you're still top 10 in high danger chances.
04:16You're not doing anything right now.
04:18You're holding on to the puck and not doing a whole lot.
04:20And that's a losing formula however you want to structure things, right?
04:24In terms of what your 5-on-5 scoring is.
04:26And you look at, I think the Bruins are 10th right now in goals per game.
04:29But how sustainable is that, right?
04:31Because a whole lot of that is coming from your fourth line.
04:33Which, again, I will keep on saying until it doesn't happen anymore.
04:38But you still can't rely on those guys producing night in and night out.
04:42So, it's not to say that you expect these struggles to carry on throughout the year.
04:47But it does feel like this team, you know, regardless of how things kind of gel over the next couple of months,
04:53feels like they're still missing a skater or two in that top six or even in that middle six.
04:58That you're just not getting a lot of finishing talent.
05:00Just not enough from so many guys up and down the lineup right now.
05:04Especially on offense.
05:05Yeah, those numbers are horrible.
05:07Yeah, it's not good.
05:08It's so bad.
05:09Yeah, it's bad.
05:10It's bad.
05:11That's like, oh, 10th in goals per game.
05:13Okay, that's good.
05:14Then you like open the hood and it's just like there's a fire underneath the hood.
05:17Yeah, there's a possum just like chewing on the wires underneath.
05:21You're like, oh my god.
05:22It's a rat living down there.
05:24Yeah.
05:25Yeah, I agree with you.
05:27I think that, you know, you mentioned the team sort of being like one or two skaters away, at least up front.
05:33And sort of stabilizing things.
05:35And I think you're right in that.
05:36Because, you know, let's just say you put in, next to Marshan and Coyle, just hypothetical 20 to 25 goal scoring wing.
05:45Right?
05:46Just a reliable finisher who doesn't cost you a ton, relatively speaking, but just can be in there.
05:51It moves everybody back and it puts them sort of in their correct place.
05:56You know, whereas Justin Brezeau, instead of being on the second line, is either on the third line.
06:01And then, you know, you've got, you sort of deal with Frederick and Geeky and Patra.
06:05Which, again, we saw that line on Saturday night with Frederick and Patra and Geeky.
06:11And I think that's an okay third line.
06:13It's taking a little bit of time.
06:15But, again, you're not generating that five on five offense.
06:18You're not.
06:19And you can tell.
06:20Right?
06:21That's the other part.
06:22Like, you can see it.
06:23You can see it.
06:24This is another thing that we said in the playoffs last year when they would, you know, finish the first period with four shots on net.
06:30And we'd say they simply are not a good enough roster to be just only looking for the best possible shot.
06:37You know, you do need, at some point, you do need a little bit of shot volume.
06:40And they've gotten better this year.
06:43We both agree.
06:44I mean, they're better on paper.
06:45But you also have some new guys.
06:48And that middle six, still, like, without Jake DeBrusque, that is the one area where you are down in talent.
06:54Like, if Zaka, Lindholm, and Pasternak are going to look for the best shot, that's fine.
06:59When it's guys like Breazeau and, you know, your second and third lines, I don't know if that works as well.
07:05And so I wonder if it's somewhere – you know, we mentioned this with the fourth line last week of, like, they shoot the puck.
07:10They get the puck to the net.
07:12Like, why does that not translate a little bit to those second and third lines with those guys where it's like, all right.
07:18Like, I'm not saying shoot from the half wall or shoot from the corner.
07:22Like, I'm not saying that.
07:24But sort of that, you know, the desire to have every shot from, you know, between the hash marks in front of the net.
07:34That, to me, is where, like, I think Bruins fans get so infuriated of, like, come on.
07:39Like, that's the problem.
07:41I mean, I think it just goes back to playing simple hockey, right?
07:44And that's why the fourth line's been so effective.
07:46They're not reinventing the wheel.
07:47They're not doing anything crazy out there.
07:49I mean, look at Kepke's goal.
07:51You know, now he's the leading scorer on the Bruins.
07:54Yeah, like, and that goal against Utah.
07:57Like, a simple shot beats the goalie five-hole from pretty far away.
08:00It wasn't, like, a high-danger chance.
08:02But what do you know?
08:03Like, almost like the official slogan for the NHL should be, like, shit happens.
08:08Because, like, I mean, literally, that's what you're seeing from a lot of these teams that, you know, have these high shot volumes.
08:15And you've seen that with teams like Carolina.
08:18And it's not saying that the Bruins need to completely uproot their system in terms of how they're approaching the game offensively.
08:24Going back to the Cassidy days of having 45 shot attempts or anything like that.
08:30Like, I don't see that being the case where they need to change those things.
08:34But for right now, as your team's in a rut, and you're not getting the chemistry there, and it's something that you hope builds, which should be expected.
08:41Right now, like, maybe now is when you have a little bit of a detour here and you change things around.
08:46And just be like, just get a puck on net, crash the net, play simple.
08:49We'll solve the, you know, where the lines fit and all those things.
08:52But you don't need to have, you know, the best chemistry with a bunch of guys to, you know, still know what the message is of playing simple hockey.
09:00If you have whoever, whatever line Trent Frederick or Justin Brezzo or Geeky are on, if they're winning puck battles, hanging around the net front, and pucks are getting through, then chances will be there.
09:12So, you know, I don't see it as much of a thing that you need it all to be a well-oiled machine now.
09:17Because that's never the case for any team, especially early on in the year.
09:20But I think if you adhere to the similar, you know, simple game plan that the fourth line has kind of stuck to this whole year, then I think results are going to be there, at least for right now.
09:31I think you just need to really simplify and try to get a few guys going and try to build your game that way.
09:36Because once guys are getting confident and, you know, points are on the board, then I think you start seeing guys fall into a rhythm.
09:42And that's what this team, especially scoring-wise, desperately needs right now.
09:46And when you're constantly juggling the lines and looking for correct combinations, that chemistry is not going to be there.
09:52It just isn't off the top.
09:54So when you do have a system where you are throwing pucks on net, and guys like Frederick and Geeky can get to the front and tip shots and grab rebounds, like, it sounds so simple.
10:03Obviously, it's easier said than done.
10:05But I do think that is a little bit more of a recipe for winning hockey with this roster than they currently have going.
10:11I want to get into some takeaways for the first six games of the year.
10:14Because, you know, you and I, we did, I think, poke the bear.
10:16And we did a Bruins beat.
10:18Or a Bruins beat came out after that Colorado game.
10:21So we really only have one new game to talk about.
10:23It wasn't that high-flying.
10:25You know, just not a ton from it.
10:27So I want to go through some takeaways through six games of the season.
10:30But first, a quick word from our friends over at PrizePix.

11:53Now, back to the show.
11:55So, takeaways, Connor.
11:57Takeaways from the first six games.
11:59And my first takeaway is not going to be a takeaway.
12:01It's a question.
12:02And it's a question I would never have expected to ask myself.
12:06You go back like two weeks and say, alright, six games into the season.
12:09What's your first question going to be about this roster?
12:11About moving the lines around?
12:13Be like, what?
12:14This one?
12:15Should they move Cole Koepke up in the lineup?
12:18Like, isn't that wild?
12:20And you tweeted out, like, what if he's just the next Carter for Hagee?
12:22Which, honestly, at this point, like, maybe he is.
12:26They might be onto something here.
12:28A nice Syracuse Crunch player that was putting up numbers gets a shot somewhere else.
12:32Be awesome.
12:34Oh, what a story.
12:35I mean, we're all rooting for it.
12:37Should he move up, though?
12:39Should they break up that fourth line?
12:41I wouldn't right now.
12:43I think you try every other option before you do that just because I think that fourth line is playing so well that I don't want to, you know, it's like touching the dice.
12:51And I think you should leave.
12:53It's like, quit fucking with them.
12:55Yes, exactly.
12:56Like, don't.
12:57I don't know why I have this.
12:59I know.
13:00I was like, they didn't plan that out at all.
13:02Or it's like having, like, taking a nice steak off the grill.
13:04And then after a minute, just cutting it.
13:06And you have to let it rest.
13:08So I think right now, patience has to be prescribed with that fourth line.
13:12They're playing so well.
13:14Let them cook.
13:15I wouldn't do that yet.
13:18That being said, I mean, there are other options you can look at, right?
13:21Like Patra and a top six spot on the wing.
13:23You can see that being an option.
13:25I'd rather them, you know, not hit the nuclear button.
13:28But I'd rather them look at, you know, the Tyler Johnson scenario where you have to maybe wave a guy and accelerate maybe the banking cap space you're trying to do to get him signed or call up Lysel.
13:39I'd really do that before you touch this fourth line.
13:41Because I think right now they're playing so well.
13:43You know, if they cool down after a three-game stretch and Kepke's still getting pucks on net and still doing the little things that's making him an effective player, then maybe you see what he can do in that spot.
13:55But for right now, I wouldn't touch that line at all.
13:58It's like your one consistent line that's generating offense.
14:01So I wouldn't work with it, at least for right now.
14:03I completely agree.
14:05Montgomery said, Montgomery was asked about this.
14:07And he said, you know, I think we just need to play them more.
14:10And I agree.
14:11Like, that's the complete right thing there.
14:13Like, they are your fourth line on the chart, on the line charts.
14:16But they are not your actual fourth line.
14:18They are playing third.
14:19They're playing middle six minutes.
14:21And that's what they should play because they've been playing so well.
14:24I'm with you.
14:25You have other options in-house.
14:27You mentioned Lysel.
14:28I know we scored a really nice goal this past weekend.
14:31You mentioned Tyler Johnson.
14:32We have not heard a lot about that from in there, what the latest is there.
14:38Patra, I mentioned this last week.
14:40If you want to move him in on the right wing,
14:42you want to move him up to center.
14:44I think there are other options there.
14:46Now look, if Kepke has like 20 points in his first like 16, 17 games,
14:54then yeah, you probably are going to be forced to move him off of that.
14:58It's like Marchand in 2011.
15:00Like, all right, he's not a fourth liner anymore.
15:02Like, he's graduated up.
15:03But right now is not the time to do that.
15:05Six games is still not enough.
15:08And they're playing well.
15:10That line, they're gelling well.
15:12There are other options in-house for that fourth line.
15:15I'm not worried about like replacing him.
15:17But the line's cooking, man.
15:20Don't mess with that.
15:22Don't mess with that.
15:23That's going pretty good.
15:24That's going pretty good.
15:26Another takeaway I have, a big question mark going into the year,
15:32was Jeremy Swayman.
15:33How fast was he going to be NHL ready?
15:35I believe he has like a 2.71 goals against average or right around there.
15:39905, say, percentage.
15:41Again, not staggeringly incredible numbers.
15:43A little bit of a slow start.
15:45But I do think he has, you know, like the game against Utah.
15:49I mean, you know, two goals.
15:51One was overtime.
15:52Like, I think he's adjusted quicker than maybe I expected for a guy who
15:59didn't play training camp at all, didn't face any NHL shots.
16:02What do you think about what Swayman's given you so far?
16:05Yeah, I think that game on Saturday was a step in the right direction.
16:08I think going into that game, he had a negative goal saved above expected.
16:12So he's letting in more goals than when you look at the shot volume,
16:16the quality of shots, all those things.
16:18Because he had that.
16:19It was the Montreal game.
16:20And then the second game was the Florida game.
16:24Yes, that's right.
16:25That's right.
16:26So, yeah.
16:27Which, again, I think was to be expected.
16:29When you're not playing all of training camp,
16:31you're not in any preseason games.
16:32There was going to be rust.
16:33I don't care, you know, whether he was at BU, you know,
16:37conditioning and all that thing.
16:38Like, and again, I think I wouldn't question the conditioning
16:40or anything like that.
16:41But it's different in terms of…
16:42Yeah, BU's a bad place, man.
16:43You don't want to be there.
16:44That's what people are saying.
16:46But, no, like in terms of just the actual game reps and NHL competition,
16:50you're not going to get that if you're out for the entire preseason.
16:53So I do think, though, Saturday was a step in the right direction.
16:56You're probably the only reason why you have a point leaving Utah
16:59is because of him.
17:00So, yeah, it's the same thing as, like, the overall defense was swaying.
17:06Even if there's some rust out of the gate, it's going to take him
17:08a little while to fall into the swing of things.
17:11I'm not that worried about him.
17:12I thought he was really good in that game against Utah.
17:15And, again, should only, I think, continue to get better and better
17:17as this year goes on.
17:18Yeah, I agree.
17:20I want to get into some more takeaways, some takeaways you might have.
17:23But first, quick word from our friends over at Game Time.

18:38What time is it?
18:40It's Game Time.
18:41Now, back to the show.
18:43So, Connor, any big takeaways from you through the past six games?
18:47Anything that you've noticed that we haven't touched on?
18:50Yeah, I mean, I would say one thing that has been encouraging offensively,
18:54which there's not been a whole lot of beyond the fourth line,
18:57I do like that I think the defense has been more involved
19:00in terms of being more shot ready.
19:03I haven't seen the updated numbers yet, but I know going into the Utah game,
19:07Hampus Lindholm was second on the Bruins in shot attempts.
19:10He had 31, which ranked eighth amongst all defensemen in the league.
19:17McAvoy's right behind him at 30.
19:18I think Zdorov's high up there as well.
19:20So I think especially with a guy like Lindholm,
19:23it's encouraging to see that because it's something that's been preached
19:26since Cassidy was here, right, in terms of more shot ready,
19:30adding an extra layer of offense.
19:32And I think you've seen that.
19:34I mean, the Bruins decor, I think, as a whole,
19:36has accounted for five goals and 18 points so far,
19:40which when you look at especially the fact that you've got a whole bunch of
19:43guys in that middle six that have won, if not any points,
19:46especially at five on five play, that is concerning.
19:49But I think when you have this decor that really has a lot of dynamic players
19:52out there, whether that's Lindholm, who seems to be more assertive this year.
19:56McAvoy, we know he's going to provide.
19:58Zdorov gets more pucks on net.
20:00And I think even Laurie,
20:01who I think has responded pretty well since getting scratched in that home opener.
20:05I think as you're trying to find the pieces up front,
20:08you're going to need a lot of your decor to step up in terms of whether it's
20:11being more assertive, joining the rush, or just getting pucks on net.
20:14Again, that coincides with just playing simple hockey down low.
20:19I do think it's been encouraging.
20:21The decor is taking kind of an active role.
20:23And it seems like they're finally listening to what the coaches have been
20:27preaching in terms of you just need, you know, again, they're not,
20:30you don't need these guys to be killed in the car or Bobby or out there.
20:33Right.
20:34But if it's just getting pucks on net, good things are going to happen.
20:37Yes.
20:38And we said that with the forwards too,
20:40like and credit to the Bruins defense for being more apathetic.
20:44Shout out to Mason Lowry, by the way,
20:46for some outstanding camera work on that Matt Potra golf shot.
20:49Yes.
20:50Like that.
20:51That is a very underrated storyline in the whole.
20:53I mean, obviously the golf shot is number one,
20:55the divot next to the green dude.
20:57Jeez.
20:58Like as soon as that shot doesn't respect the game,
21:00Matt Potter doesn't respect the game.
21:01As soon as that happened.
21:02If it was me,
21:03I would immediately like turn and like the camera be shaky.
21:06Cause I'd be laughing so much.
21:07Like he stuck with the shot.
21:08Yes.
21:09True pro.
21:10Yeah.
21:11For future down the road media guy.
21:12I think there's, you know, like,
21:14I don't know what you said.
21:15Behind the bee.
21:16Yes.
21:17Yes.
21:18Yes.
21:19The Bruins will hire him as a videographer.
21:20I think that that's a, that's a valid, valid thing.
21:22You're right though.
21:23And we said this last week,
21:25like every defenseman peak has,
21:27has the low has two points through six games.
21:29That's the lowest one.
21:30And that's still phenomenal for a third pairing,
21:32right shot,
21:33shut down guide to assists.
21:34You know,
21:36Laura has a goal.
21:37Lindholm has a goal.
21:38And I'm also at a goal knocked off the board.
21:40McAvoy has to like,
21:42you know,
21:43there's an orifice three assists.
21:44And I'm curious how that kind of,
21:46you know,
21:47how that looks over 10 games,
21:4920 games,
21:5030 and more,
21:51you know,
21:52again,
21:53like does low ride finish with 40,
21:5645 points?
21:57Like,
21:58I don't know.
21:59I mean,
22:00you know,
22:01he's on that pace right now.
22:02I'm curious where that,
22:03what does McAvoy look like points wise?
22:04What's the door off?
22:05It's a door.
22:06It's another interesting one.
22:07Like,
22:08you know,
22:09you saw it at times,
22:10sort of that offensive side last year and in years past,
22:12like does that come out on the stat sheet,
22:14you know,
22:15and obviously he's not playing on any power plays.
22:17So his points are at five on five,
22:19which is even more impressive.
22:22Speaking of five on five scoring,
22:24I do have another takeaway.
22:25And that is you need more from your middle six.
22:28You do,
22:29you do.
22:30And we've kind of mentioned that earlier when talking about the Utah game.
22:34But,
22:35you know,
22:36again,
22:37I mean,
22:38Marchand has four assists in six games,
22:39still without a goal.
22:40I'm not going to be one of those people.
22:41He doesn't have a goal yet.
22:42Cause goals aren't everything,
22:44but I still think offensively,
22:46you need a little more from him.
22:47Again,
22:48coil has one goal in six games.
22:50Like that second line,
22:51no matter what the,
22:52the matchup or what the sort of trio has been,
22:56just hasn't really been good enough,
22:58especially five on five.
22:59Potter has one assist through four games.
23:02Again,
23:03young guy,
23:04like I I'll give him a pass on that,
23:06but again,
23:07Brazil,
23:08one assist,
23:09five games,
23:10six games.
23:11Also,
23:12I will,
23:13you know,
23:14again,
23:15we're not a bit,
23:16we're not pro plus minus here,
23:17but Frederick's a minus seven.
23:18Like that's not good enough.
23:20Uh,
23:21cool.
23:22Kepke,
23:23on the other hand,
23:24plus 10,
23:25insane.
23:26I have no words.
23:27He's got to be like George can stand.
23:29You got to retire,
23:30like retire right now,
23:31go out on top,
23:32you know,
23:33like leave while you're ahead.
23:35Uh,
23:36if I'm cool,
23:37Kepke.
23:38Um,
23:39if I'm not,
23:40if I'm not,
