00:21I'm Ethan Baranofsky, that's Andrew Raycroft, Razer, what is up?
00:26Not much, not much.
00:29Nice to be on and after a win, that is, it just seems to be easier, especially, and three
00:36or four, too, that's kind of sneaky, I think, for everybody.
00:39I think, I don't think people realize they've won three or four, even when I was, you know,
00:43just kind of like, you know, thinking about it, I'm like, oh, they've won three or four,
00:47like you gotta give it to them.
00:48I think it's sort of because that loss to Toronto on Tuesday was so demoralizing.
00:52It's funny, last time you were on, we were discussing the Swayman situation, which was
00:56equally as demoralizing, so at least, at least that is, that is out of the way.
01:03Bruins win, Thursday night, four to three, they get the OT win, a little close at the
01:08end, obviously, they blow the 3-1 lead, Marcian comes in and scores, feels like he's only
01:12scoring overtime goals at this point, Bruins will obviously take that.
01:17You know, we talk about three of four, what have you noticed, because you went on that
01:22trip to Philly, were you in Philly?
01:24Yeah, I was in Carolina too, luckily.
01:26That's right, we won't talk about that game, I don't think we need to discuss that game,
01:31but the last three or four, what have you noticed the Bruins be better at that they
01:36weren't previously?
01:38They're tightening up defensively, especially five on five, I think it's strictly a special
01:44team story at this point, that's what I think this team is, any negativity, any concerns
01:50is strictly special teams now, I think their five on five game's really good, I think even
01:58the Toronto game, that first half of the game was solid, going into Toronto, they didn't
02:04give anything up, they had a few opportunities themselves, they created a few penalties themselves,
02:09so for me, I like their game, they just need more special teams work and they need to take
02:18a few less penalties, but that's my takeaway since the Carolina game, is just how much
02:24they just, okay, we have to lock this down, we cannot allow passes through the seam, five
02:30on five, royal road goals, and they've done that in the last four, and got back to a little
02:38bit of their identity.
02:40Yeah, to me, I thought that Carolina game was rock bottom, and I thought there were
02:46games prior to that that were rock bottom, I thought the Dallas game, or Philly when they
02:49lost 2-0, I thought those were rock bottom, turns out losing 8-2 Carolina is quite literally
02:57rock bottom, and I think what kind of mystified me through the first month, we're a month into
03:05the season, through a lot of that first month, was just on paper, that defense is good, and
03:10even Montgomery talked about this on Thursday, about Zdorov, where it's like, here's a guy
03:15that you expect a little bit more from, and maybe a little more coachable, and it just
03:19wasn't there, and I could never understand that, where it's like, okay, Mason Leroy gets
03:24beat to the front of the net, it's a young guy, that's gonna happen, and Charlie McAvoy
03:30seemed like he was trying to do too much, and you're right, I think they have locked
03:34it down a bit five on five defensively, and again, the Toronto game, those three goals,
03:39the fourth obviously was an empty netter, but those three were power play goals, so
03:42it's like, just stop taking those penalties, you saw that, you saw a little bit of that rear
03:47its head on Thursday night, Marchand punches the guy, I can't say his last name.
03:54Prospisil?
03:55Prospisil, Prospisil, punches Prospisil.
03:57That was a brutal penalty, just for the record, I mean,
04:03I get it, and they're in no position to be like, hoping they get a call,
04:07because they've taken so many penalties, but that was weak little.
04:11It's wild that that was the one, it was wild that out of that whole thing,
04:15that was the one penalty called.
04:17Yeah, it was, a little bit of Marchand's defense, but otherwise, he can't defend them,
04:21and he didn't defend himself, and it was stupid, and you just, again, the Bruins are walking a
04:26razor thin margin right now, so it's not like they're 10-0, and they can just kind of
04:32do a stick play, like that's where all this is accumulating a little bit, where accumulating
04:38is that little face wash, the stick in the skates, oh, I gotta wait, well, it's happened
04:44five times in a row, so you don't get the benefit of that doubt anymore, you don't get to not be
04:49criticized for that play, or you don't get to get defended because the refs were bad, it's just,
04:54you've done it too much now, so they've got to get back to the point where they can bank some
04:59goodwill.
05:00Yeah, and those offensive zone penalties are just killer, I can't, like, that drives everybody
05:07nuts. David Popstock was interesting on Thursday, because there were some shifts body language-wise
05:14and stuff, I didn't, you know, fully notice them, but then he gets those two points, really nice
05:19pass across on that first goal, helps out on the second, he has sort of responded fairly well,
05:28I didn't love his game on Tuesday against Toronto after Montgomery sort of called him out,
05:35he does get on the score sheet Thursday, what have you noticed from him so far this year,
05:39like, what's, what have been some of your big takeaways about Popstock?
05:44Well, I think, I think he really likes playing with Pavel Zaka, that's, that's a big takeaway
05:48for me, I think he feels most comfortable, I think he, he just, he gets more excited to play
05:55when he has Zach in the middle of him, so we saw that Thursday night, I think he's
06:01frustrated with the power play, because he knows, really, that's his, that's where he's getting 60
06:06goals from, that's, if he's not, if that thing's not clicking, if he's, and, and, and in fairness
06:12to the other guys that are on that power play with it, like, Toronto literally put a shadow on him,
06:18on the PP, like, I'm sitting right down the glass, and I'm watching, and the Bruins did a pretty good
06:23job, and Montgomery said this yesterday, like, when they get it in the zone, they have pretty
06:27when they get it in the zone, they have pretty good movement, but the issue is, is they're trying
06:31to force it to David, and they literally have a shadow on him, and someone else has to start
06:36scoring to open up David, and then they really get cooking, but that's, that's really what,
06:41what is necessary for them to get going, and I think David's frustrated with that, I think
06:45he's a little annoyed that they're, they're covering him that way, I think he's a little
06:50annoyed that he's not getting it, and, and so I think there's a little bit of frustration
06:56boiling over that, but beyond that, he, David's playing his game, and getting his point, like,
07:02it's hard to get points, like, I think we're seeing it with, like, Coyle, and Frederick,
07:06and Zach, like, it's hard to score, and hard to get points in the NHL, and David continually does
07:11that, so, yes, he's going to have a bit of a funky way of doing it, he's going to look, he's going to
07:16give it away, it's going to look like he doesn't care sometimes, but at the end of the day, that's
07:21his personality, that's what he is, that's what makes him great, and you have to kind of, Manny
07:26Ramirez, embrace it, I, I just, like, I don't know, it's just not going to be different than that,
07:31it never will, folks, and, and, and the guys know it, you know, I talked to the guys that, that
07:38played with him at different times, and they laugh about, like, yeah, that's David, that,
07:42that's what David does, and, and, and it is Manny being Manny, it's David being David,
07:47I really think that that's kind of where we need to settle in with him on this contract in the next
07:5113 years, he's going to get 100 points, he's going to be great, he's going to do some cool stuff,
07:56he's also going to frustrate somebody at times, but at the end of it, like, you look at his
08:00playoff number, like, there's nothing you can, like, critique him on in his career,
08:04he shows up in the playoffs, he shows up in the tough times, he scores overtime goals,
08:08all of those things, so, I think what we've seen is a little bit more frustration, again,
08:14because of the power play, but, but really, just David being David.
08:19Yeah, the, it's funny, I remember last year in the playoffs, people being like,
08:22oh, Pasternak, he's a playoff choker, and it's like, no, he isn't, like,
08:25it's crazy, his numbers are crazy in the playoffs.
08:27Have you looked at his numbers in the playoffs, would you please do that for me, and I've never
08:32understood that, and I think you're right, I think there is a little bit of Manny being Manny with
08:36him, where there are going to be some, you know, times where he doesn't exactly hustle to the
08:40bench to make a change as the far side wing, and you kind of have to take it, and when he puts up
08:46two points like he did last night, you really have to take it. I think it's interesting with the
08:51power play, because, like, I thought when they signed Lindholm, and this could still happen,
08:54I mean, again, it's, we're a month into the season, we'll get into sort of, you know,
08:58what the kind of outlook on this team is, but I thought Lindholm, Elias Lindholm, would be
09:03more of a threat from the bumper, and would kind of, as Bergeron sort of drew attention
09:08in the bumper, which kind of helped open up Pasternak, and you had two legitimate threats,
09:12I don't feel they have two legitimate threats now with that power play, just feels like it's
09:16Pasternak. How does that power play change? Is it McAvoy at the top? Is it, you know, putting
09:25Lowry up there? Like, what have you seen out of that power play so far that's made it unsuccessful?
09:30Well, I think, like, look at the goal Calgary scores last night, they just throw a wrist
09:36threat net, Sharon Govich puts a stick on it, goes up and over Korpisalo. I think a couple of
09:42those could really, like, the Leafs sucked. The Leafs power play was the worst in the league,
09:46they get three on three, and then they get, they start feeling good. I think the Bruins need a
09:50little bit of that, they do need a little puck luck, like, they've been around the net, they've
09:54had a little opportunity, they need something good to happen, I think that'll start it. That's
10:00first. Like, the power plays are very cyclical, and unfortunately the Bruins power plays started
10:06out a little on the wrong side of the cycle to start the season, so there's a major focus. There
10:11is a little bit of that. But, but, I think you need to solidify a threat up top. I know, I know
10:23David likes the pass from the right hander up there, but I think Lindholm can move the puck.
10:29I like Lindholm more than Lowry, I still, Lowry, Lowry's very good offensively, and like, the skill
10:37level, I'm not sure if he's completely figured out how a power play works at times. I think he
10:42still wants to do a little bit too much on his own. I think the Bruins need to move the puck quicker,
10:47and, and sometimes it can end up on Six's stick just a little bit too long, and on a bad way,
10:52but just in this scenario, I think 27 just kind of zips it a little bit more at times,
10:58even though it's, it's, it's that lefty doesn't quite work as well going over to the flank. But,
11:04and, but the rest of it's on those guys in that little corner, figuring out that bumper play,
11:09figuring out Lindholm. I think Marci again, like two posts last night off wristers, one was on
11:14the power play. If that goes in, like, I think we're getting closer with Brad, and, and developing
11:21that low, that low play, because they've scored two great power play goals. The one to Coyle,
11:26that Coyle made the great play the other day, and the one, um, I, I wasn't, I, Toronto,
11:34I think it was Toronto. Yep. I wasn't there. I know I watched it on TV. It was one game. I,
11:39I, I didn't watch it. I think it was Toronto where Brad gets it over to David. It was Toronto
11:43stole ours in that, uh, that play, that play has got to get, if they get that, if they can open
11:48that up a little bit more. Um, so it's a long, long, really, I, I, that was a really long winded
11:55answer, I think. And I didn't really say much other than they got to move the pot quicker and
11:59they have to get confident. And, um, I said, yeah, nothing meaningful, um, or, or nothing.
12:08There's no magic pill. There's no magic bullet. There really isn't. It's just a matter of
12:12confidence and zipping the pocket a split second earlier. And, and honestly having a little puck
12:16luck too. Yeah. The mobility, they're a little too stationary at times that I think is one of
12:22their downfalls. Um, I want to get into some of the lines that Montgomery and a comment Marchand
12:27made last night. I also want to get into the big question of, or the Bruins mediocre, or it's just,
12:32just kind of, you know, a bad stretch. Are they coming out of it? Uh, but first quick word from

14:14So, uh, Marcian made an interesting comment last night, uh, about, uh, the lines. Um, he said that
14:22quote, when you're thinking, it just slows you down. You have to be able to play fast. It's
14:25something that we just haven't done a good job of, but it's getting better five on five. I agree.
14:29It is getting better five on five. Uh, but he also added, he feels like he has good chemistry
14:33with Hampus Lindholm, but adds with the way that Montgomery coaches, he changes the lines
14:37a lot and it could change tomorrow. Um, I think Marcian's right. I actually do like him with
14:43Elias Lindholm, uh, which again is not what we anticipated. We thought it would be Marcian with
14:47coil. Um, maybe Marcian Lindholm is sort of a good shutdown line. You had Parsonak to it,
14:53and that is a good five on five offensive line. Um, but I don't know, do you Montgomery has had
15:01a quick trigger finger this year with the lines? Um, has it been a little too quick? Uh, could he,
15:07it could be, could he be a little bit more stable with kind of trying to find out lines or is it,
15:12there's a lot of new guys and it's hard to kind of figure out the trios.
15:15Well, I think, I think also it's, it's, that's, it's more on the players. Um, I, I coaches would
15:22rather not think about that kind of thing, or especially the way they, they, they like having
15:26pairs. That's ideal for coaches. They have pairs and then they kind of sift the extra winger around
15:33throughout the lineup. That's ideal for them. Um, I think the players haven't individually,
15:39haven't performed at times, and he's tried to get guys going or tried to help guys. And
15:45that's been a real focus, which, um, is an ideal. So I think, uh, again, it's
15:52settled in Thursday night. I there's Zach, uh, pasta that just seems so obvious to me.
16:00Um, it just seemed that they just, it just happier for them. Um, which, which then puts,
16:06and I also think slotting coil on the third line just worked better at center. I think you bring
16:12Lindholm in to, to put coil as the third line center, um, and, and keep Zach there. That just
16:19makes sense to me. I think Zach is a, I think Zach is a good centerman. Like I he's good on the
16:23wing, but I think he's a, he really gets this system defensively and he really allows David to
16:29go. So I like the way they were slotted Thursday night. I liked the pairing of Zach, uh, pasta.
16:36And then I liked the pairing of Lindholm and Marshawn. I think that goal in overtime looks
16:42so much like 37 and 63 in overtime. Like that is dead. That is the ultimate 37 type play to get it
16:51to Marshawn and let them do his thing. Um, so at light 37 light, I'm not going all the way there
16:58because that's sacrilegious in my house. And then you can't do that. No, you can't do that at all.
17:04And then we got coil, uh, on the third line and that just frees him up with match-ups and gets
17:09his skating going and making plays with Kepke. I, it could be a, it could be a coil Kepke that
17:14goal last night. That's, that's a thing of beauty. And that is the ultimate Charlie coil play. And,
17:20and, and Kepke is really, really, really digging himself in and making it hard not to be on the
17:26fourth line. So those are the three pairs that I go with right now. And then, and then you've
17:33got Castle Lake in the middle on the fourth line, like that, that works for me. Um, there's still,
17:38you still need a lot from a few of those wingers, but, but those are the four pairs that the four
17:43centers I would have in the three pairs on the first three lines that I'm going with and probably
17:47going to settle in here for the next two weeks and just let it ride. Yup. Let it cook. I think
17:53it's interesting, um, that coil, uh, you know, again, after the season he had last year, we have
17:58like 59, 60 points now back to sort of that third line spot, at least for right now. And I agree
18:03with you. I think he is better down there. I just, I feel like he has more to give potentially
18:09in the, in the top six or at least he had more to give. Um, and I agree with you on Zaka and
18:14post rock. I mean, that connection has been there legitimately since Zaka got here in 2022.
18:20And, uh, you know, I do think Montgomery said to change the lines a lot, but I also think it's
18:23because their five on five offense has been terrible. And it was bad for a while. So it's
18:27like, you're trying to jumpstart something and it feels like you're onto something with this.
18:32I also find it interesting. Tyler Johnson was with Zaka and Poshnok last night. You know,
18:36I think I look at him as sort of, you know, you made a Manny Ramirez analogy earlier. I'll make
18:40a Brock Holt analogy. I think he's very Brock Holt utility guy. I think he can go anywhere in
18:44that top, uh, in that top nine. Um, and again, I think if they continue to play the way they have
18:50the last four games, when three or four, when two of three, uh, and sort of, you know, again,
18:54they're, I think tied for fourth or tied for third in the Atlantic right now. Um, you sort of put,
19:00you put yourself in a position to go out and get yourself a real top six winger, uh, come the
19:06deadline, which again is a topic that we can, we can absolutely save for another day. Um, yes,
19:12we do not need to do that right now. I don't know why I don't know who it's available anyways.
19:18You know, like we, uh, you know, Kevin Weeks brought up that Trent Frederick thing.
19:22And so the Trent Frederick rumors start coming out and it's like, all right, who is he going for
19:27Diver? I will say Mark Diver, uh, Frederick for Frank Petrano. I love that idea. I, I could get
19:34down with that idea, but we can save that for another day. I want to get into big picture
19:38questions with the Bruins though. First though, quick word from our friends over at game time.
19:42There's nothing like watching an NBA or NHL game live the energy in the building,

20:52What time is it? It's game time now back to the show. So I want to get into sort of, you know,
20:58the big question. I think a lot of people are wondering about the Bruins and I get asked this
21:02by friends. I see it on Twitter. Um, are the Bruins a mediocre middle of the road team,
21:08or are they a team that just sort of is starting slow? People aren't used to the Bruins starting
21:14slow. Um, and, and, uh, and you know, they're going to kind of find their footing, which they
21:19seem to be doing at least the last four games. Uh, where do you fall?
21:24I think they're good. I think they're good. I think for all of the, like, I, they're going to
21:32be hard in the playoffs to play. You can see that, like, you can see that it's a little bit different.
21:38You can see that come difficult games. And again, this is like, I guess, again, take the special
21:46teams piece out of this because that's really why they're 500. That's the only reason they're 500.
21:52They would have won two more games, which means they'd be four games over 500 had their special
21:57teams started out of the gates the way they have, but their, their, their power plays almost last
22:03their, their penalty kill is in the twenties, which is unheard of for this group. And usually
22:08they're top five in both. That's the difference. It's a little bit. So you could probably make an
22:13argument. I I'm not going to go through. You can make the argument that they've lost three games
22:18because of their special teams or three and a half games, which puts them six, seven games over 500
22:23right now. And, and 10 and three, you know, 10 and five, whatever they are, uh, that could have been
22:30the case. And so, so I go back to this team being a good team. I, I, I don't, I understand that it's
22:38not 10 and O and it feels bad because it's 500, but the league's 500, the, the, the division's
22:43500. They, they only, they can rattle off five in a row and there'll be second place and handily
22:48in the playoffs all year. And that we know this team will rattle off five in a row at some point.
22:53And they've proven too, that they're, they're still have that. They still have that. We're
22:59not losing five in a row kind of thing that, that, that does, that hasn't gone away either.
23:04So I think they're a really good team. I think at the end of the season, we're going to look back
23:09and say, well, yeah, we really over-exaggerate at the start. This team is still built for playoffs.
23:14This team is really hard. This D is really good. Um, and they will figure out the special teams.
23:22They're, they're too good not to, I agree. And you're right about a lot of the division being
23:28500. I mean, the Panthers are 10, three and one, but you have Toronto seven, five and two
23:32Tampa seven, six, and one Bruins seven, seven, and one Detroit six, five, and one Buffalo six,
23:37seven, and one Ottawa six, seven, and oh, the Canadians are different story.
23:41I think it's, you know, I look at this roster and I looked at the roster prior to the year
23:46and I said, they got better. I mean, yes, they lost the goalie tandem and sure they lost Jake
23:50DeBrusque, but you added a number one center. You added a, what should be a top four defenseman,
23:56a big, tough guy that should help you in the playoffs. I, you know, even though they did
24:02wave Max Jones guys like Castilek and Kepke have worked, um, Lynn Tolman's taken a little bit.
24:08Um, I, the team is good. I picked them to be first in the Atlantic prior to the year. Cause I,
24:14I do think they're that good. They can be that good. And they, as you said, like coil can be
24:18the third line center or Zaka could be on the wing and there's options there and good things take
24:23time. And, uh, Connor Ryan and I were talking about this earlier this week after the Toronto
24:27game, when the mood was a little bit more dour, um, where we were saying, you know, look,
24:34this roster is good. Like it's not all going to come together immediately. Not every team starts
24:39out hot. Um, and yes, there's some concerning things. The five on five offense for a long time
24:43was not good. Um, you know, but now it is kind of just down to special teams. Um, and I, again,
24:50I, I, I'm not throwing in the white flag on this team. Now there's no, there's no reason to, uh,
24:57and again, I, uh, you know, I said this earlier this week, if they are 500 in three months,
25:04then that's a different story, but I don't think they will be. I think this roster
25:07is just too good. Um, and, and again, you need more from certain guys. You need more from Elias
25:12Lindholm points wise. You need more from Charlie Coyle. You need more from Zaka and, and Frederick
25:17and a lot of these guys. Um, but I still, I still think that this is a good team. Uh,
25:23and I agree with you. I think they should be hard to play the playoffs. And if they're not,
25:27then that's a big problem because on paper they should be. Um, by the way, how have you liked
25:32being, uh, be an ice side, being the ringside guy? How have you liked that?
25:36Ringside's good. Ringside's good. Um, it's somewhat nice to be on the road. Um, somewhat.
25:44I remember why I stopped playing cause it is, uh, you miss stuff. Um, but it's fun to be around
25:50everybody. It's fun to kind of be in the mix again. Uh, it's an easy way to travel certainly,
25:55but, uh, it's good. I, I, I enjoy it. I enjoy being in the game and focusing on the game and,
26:01and, um, picking up little pieces, of course, mostly goalie stuff. But, um, I feel like I have
26:08a better handle on the team when I'm, when I'm down there. Oh yeah. I mean, those are,
26:12that's a perfect view of it. I imagine that when you're at the desk,
26:15Billy Jaffe's just talking to you the entire period. Yeah. That's right. When we're up there,
26:20you know, like it's, it's like a revolving door up there, uh, in the studio, especially in the
26:25garden at home. We get, we get a good dig in, but, um, so yeah, no, it's been, uh, it's been good,
26:31but it's, it's, yeah, it's fun. Yeah. You've been doing a great job. So it's been awesome to, uh,
26:35see you ice side. Um, Razor, this has been fun. We'll have to have you back. Um, I, you know,
26:41I usually ask you what they should be looking forward to from the guests, but you obviously
26:45are on Nessun, um, doing a multitude of different things. Uh, you also have morning brew, correct?
26:51Correct. Morning brew with Jaffe and Razor. So, um, that's keeping us busy as well. Keeping me
26:56up at night. So check that out as well. You never have too many podcasts on the mix.
27:02Exactly. I mean, there's lots of traffic out there again. Like, you know, we're back.
27:05That's what's fun. And I also look at like, you know, uh, people are like,
27:08oh, you have competing podcasts. And it's like, you can listen to a podcast whenever you want.
27:12We don't, it's not like you and I are, you know, only at 7.00 AM, only at 7.00 PM, listen to it
27:18when you want. So yes, go listen, um, to morning Bruce. Yeah. That's been Bruins beat. I'm Evan
27:22Baranofsky. It's Andrew Raycroft. You Brewsby listeners have a great rest of your week.
