00:00Every last Sunday of the month of October, we hold the Food Safety Awareness Week here in the Philippines.
00:07As a part of this, we will be joined by the Department of Health.
00:12And Doc Rio will be with us to find out how we can keep our food clean and safe.
00:30Good morning, RSP members. I am Doc Rio Magpantay from the Ministry of Health.
00:37Today, we will find out what the Secretary-General and experts have to say regarding various issues related to health.
00:46Every last Sunday of the month of October, we hold the Food Safety Awareness Week
00:54to find out how we can keep our food clean and safe.
00:59And to discuss this, we will be joined by Ms. Jean Micah Virtudazo, a Food Drug Regulation Officer III.
01:08Welcome to Rise and Shine, Filipinas!
01:11Ma'am Micah.
01:13Thank you, Doc Rio, and good morning to all of our viewers.
01:19You know, Ma'am Micah, it is very challenging to keep our food clean and safe.
01:25Do we still have data on food poisoning events?
01:32Yes, Doc Rio. We have data on food poisoning cases in our country.
01:39And according to the Department of Health, there are thousands of food poisoning cases every year.
01:45That's a lot.
01:46That's true, Doc.
01:47And it usually happens when our consumers consume food that is contaminated with bacteria,
01:55such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus.
01:59So, these bacteria usually cause food poisoning when we handle, prepare, and store food in the wrong way.
02:07How big is the effect of food poisoning on people?
02:10Actually, Doc Rio, the effect of food poisoning on people depends on severity.
02:15It depends on how many bacteria they ingest.
02:18So, they may experience symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.
02:25In more severe cases, there are people who suffer from dehydration or kidney failure.
02:31And of course, what we really don't want to avoid is death.
02:36Especially our vulnerable groups, children, adults, and those with weak immune systems.
02:44It is really important to maintain a clean preparation of our food inside our homes,
02:53even outside where we buy it.
02:55Yes, Doc.
02:56How can we ensure this?
02:57What can you advise to ensure the cleanliness of our food preparation techniques?
03:03For our citizens and our food industry,
03:07it is important to follow the proper preparation, handling, and packaging of our food.
03:15First of all, the most basic thing is to wash our hands before and after we prepare our food.
03:23Make sure that the utensils and tables where we prepare our food are clean
03:30so that we can avoid cross-contamination of bacteria.
03:34Secondly, we have what we call a danger zone.
03:37We should avoid storing our food within this danger zone.
03:41This danger zone is the temperature range from 5°C to 60°C.
03:47This is the temperature where bacteria reproduce and multiply faster.
03:55And because of these kinds of things that happen to us,
03:58sometimes there is food poisoning,
04:00we should also be aware of the Food Safety Awareness Week.
04:05This week, we should be aware of this.
04:08How can we join these activities?
04:11And how should we be aware of this?
04:14As part of our commitment of our government to the safety of food in our country,
04:20this year, we are celebrating Food Safety Awareness Week
04:24through various activities such as webinars.
04:28We also prepared a virtual fun run where our guests can join.
04:34We will also release social media publication materials during that week
04:40that I invite everyone to share and like
04:43so that we can enrich our knowledge when it comes to food safety.
04:47Why is this important?
04:49Because when it comes to food safety, from consumers to industry,
04:54all of us have an important role to maintain food safety in our country.
04:59I have an important question for our viewers.
05:05If you are not an expert, how can you know that food is not safe?
05:13For example, you will buy something in the market.
05:16Do you have any tips that you can share?
05:20One of the things that we can advise to our consumers
05:23when we go out to eat in our favorite restaurants,
05:27it is important to have an education on food safety.
05:32For us to know that this restaurant follows food safety standards,
05:38we need to enrich our knowledge on food safety.
05:43That's why we invite you to follow the page of Food and Drug Administration
05:48because we also publish food safety tips.
05:51Not only the FDA, but also other government agencies
05:55that publish advocacy programs.
05:58Aside from the restaurants, we also invite you to watch the products that you buy.
06:06The most basic thing is to check if the food is expired
06:10or if there are obvious deterioration
06:13that can be a sign that the product is contaminated.
06:17That's why it is important to get sanitation permits,
06:21especially for food handlers.
06:23What are the basic rules that we should remember
06:26when handling food?
06:29Not only for food handlers outside, but also for us inside our homes.
06:34What are the basic hygiene that we should remember?
06:38Like what I mentioned earlier,
06:41the first thing that we can do for free
06:44is to always wash our hands before and after we prepare food.
06:49That's what we should always think about.
06:52For our homes, what I call the danger zone,
06:55so that we won't get confused,
06:57we should always remember to keep hot food hot
07:00and keep cold food cold.
07:02Keep hot food hot and keep cold food cold.
07:06That's easy to remember, right?
07:08What if you get food poisoning?
07:12What should you do?
07:14And what are the first steps that you should follow?
07:17For our consumers,
07:19if you think that you and your family are victims of food poisoning,
07:24the first step is to go to your city health office,
07:27to your local government unit,
07:29and they are the offices that can conduct an investigation
07:34and pass if what you experienced is a case of food poisoning.
07:40If it is verified that it is a case of food poisoning,
07:44our government has prepared steps to further verify
07:49what caused the food poisoning.

07:54What's important now is for our fellow Filipinos to be aware.
07:58Please remind our fellow Filipinos, our citizens,
08:03about their consciousness about the safety of our food
08:07and how they can be part of our Food Safety Awareness Week this week.

08:18we should always remember that food safety is our responsibility
08:23from consumers, food industry, and the government.
08:27I urge you to participate in activities for Food Safety Awareness Week
08:32so that we can further expand our knowledge
08:35on how we can protect ourselves, our families,
08:39and our community against foodborne illnesses.
08:42For the well-being and safety of all of us,
08:45let's help each other,
08:47the Food and Drug Administration and other government agencies,
08:51to maintain the safety of food in the country
08:54and avoid foodborne illnesses.
