00:00Welcome to Medea TV, we are talking about cinema in this chronicle culture
00:13because I have the pleasure of having Saad Chahibi next to me
00:16who has just released his latest film, Le silence des violons,
00:20which was presented at the 24th edition of the National Film Festival in Tangier
00:25and which will be released in the Moroccan cinemas on October 30th.
00:29Saad Chahibi, it is a pleasure and an honor to be with you.
00:32Saad Chahibi, thank you very much for accepting our invitation.
00:35A word perhaps on the welcome of the public of the National Film Festival in Tangier.
00:41Thank you to you first, thank you to the viewers of the channel.
00:45I think the screening took place in good conditions.
00:49The first reactions I had so far are positive.
00:53The debate that followed was a rather nice debate
00:57because I think the theme of the film is a new theme for critics, journalists, etc.
01:04They are discovering this new theme that has not been treated so far in Moroccan cinema,
01:11that is, this relationship between authentic music and classical music.
01:16I think it is a new theme that is pleasing to people.
01:22Now the real verdict, we will have it from October 30th when the film will be in theaters
01:27and we will see what the public's reaction will be.
01:29What I want is that they appreciate what we have done in this theme.
01:35So, Le silence des violons, just to remind us,
01:38we had the chance to see the film, it is the story of a grandfather
01:44who tries to teach his little daughter the melhoun,
01:48to merge it with classical music,
01:51but it is above all a lesson on the preservation of our heritage.
01:56We can say that the melhoun, for you as a director, has fallen to the point of being named.
02:00Much more than falling to the point of being named,
02:03because the theme, I started working on it in 2020, it's already been four years.
02:08The script was written between 2020 and 2022,
02:11we shot it in 2023, we shot it in May 2023.
02:15And then in December, we had the pleasant surprise that UNESCO recognized the melhoun
02:21as a universal, immaterial heritage.
02:25And it was great that this coincidence between the film and this recognition happened.
02:33The melhoun, because it is something unknown to people.
02:36It is true that at the time of writing, I hesitated between Andalusian music and melhoun music.
02:43But when I say Andalusian music, there will be no added value.
02:46I will not bring anything new, because it is a music that is known by everyone,
02:50which is listened to by everyone, which has become practically popular,
02:54while people do not know the melhoun.
02:57And then when I read the anthology of the melhoun of Mohamed El Fassi,
03:02there I discover magnificent beauties, a poetry, sublime words,
03:08which describe what? Which describe people's daily life.
03:12So my concerns from before, it talks about relationships between people,
03:17and then it sublimates the question of love, it sublimates the question of women,
03:23it sublimates beauty, whatever beauty.
03:26And I found that it was something magnificent, and that's what got me into this story.
03:31And myself, who knows a little melhoun,
03:33in three years I learned a lot more than what I knew.
03:38And I hope that it will allow this art, which is an art, as you said,
03:44our national heritage, one of the national heritages of Vienna,
03:48to expand a little more towards the public,
03:51and that the public knows it and discovers it.
03:53It would be great.
03:54So this story, precisely, which is still great in your film,
03:58apart from, of course, your main actor, the grandfather,
04:00because he must be, we will say, she is logically an elderly person,
04:03but you have chosen a new generation of actors.
04:06They are graduates of the ISADAC, but maybe not your main actress.
04:11Tell us about this trio of young people, this cast,
04:15but they are young people, we see them in the film quite brilliantly.
04:21The two young people, the ISADAC, it was not very complicated,
04:24because we went to the ISADAC, we picked up, we had about twenty people,
04:27we found both.
04:28On the other hand, the surprise, and the beautiful surprise too,
04:31it is the actress who played the main role, who is not an actress,
04:35she is a musician.
04:36We found her in a regional conservatory in the city of Blimelel.
04:40She has been playing the violin for eight years now.
04:43She is a student at the conservatory,
04:45but at the same time she is a university student.
04:47She takes her classes at the faculty.
04:49And she never played.
04:51And when we casted her, when we made her do rehearsals
04:55with professional actors,
04:57well, we had a nice surprise.
04:59I think that, among the reactions,
05:01I was saying earlier what people's reactions were,
05:03among the reactions I had since the casting,
05:06everyone said, wow, this girl, she is not a professional,
05:09but she plays well.
05:11And I think that, indeed, it was one of the beautiful surprises
05:14that we discovered during the casting.
05:16But Azl Arab al-Karad, it was normal.
05:18Aidil Abad Sorab, it was normal.
05:20Khulud, it was normal.
05:22But the discovery was the little girl.
05:24And then mix the two, mix the professionals and a non-professional,
05:27it went very well.
05:29In any case, it brought a lot of freshness
05:32to this film, The Silence of the Violins,
05:35which, of course, tells and highlights
05:38this musical heritage, which is the melhoun.
05:41Saad Charaibi, thank you very much for accepting our invitation.
05:45And I remind you that your last film,
05:47The Silence of the Violins,
05:49will be released in Moroccan theaters on October 30.
05:53And thank you, dear viewers, for your loyalty.
05:56Stay with us.
