Marcos orders use EDCA sites to airlift relief goods to 'Kristine'-stricken areas

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. says on Oct. 23, 2024 that the government will be tapping the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites to airlift relief goods, equipment and personnel needed for relief and rescue operations in areas affected by Severe Tropical Storm "Kristine." On former vice president Leni Robredo's call for help, Marcos says rescue boats and aid will be sent to Naga City and the broader Bicol area 'as soon as we can get in.'

00:00... essentially what we are doing is going to our regular SOPs at Mahayos naman. Mukhang the department already, ang nangyari lang talaga is that they look at specific cases around the country, kung ano yung kanilang specific na pangangailangan.
00:27... Right now it's really Region 5 that was hit first. Unfortunately Region 5 was almost on the periphery, hanggang nasa gilid na nung coverage area ng storm.
00:45... Pagka Isle of the Storm papasok sa Northern Luzon baka maging masyadong mabigat kahit kailangan paghandaan na mabuti.
01:15... para malapit na sila doon sa area na kailangan nilang service pagka dumaan na yung vacuum. And that's essentially what we did.
01:45... The AFP is also continuing to monitor the situation so that we will be able to activate the EDCA sites which were put there specifically for this purpose.
02:15... but that's not something we should worry about because we won't be able to remediate that. As soon as we can get in, as soon as makapasok kami, we will be doing that.
02:46... because they live in the basin within Albay and Camusul. Kaya yan ang talagang tinatamaan lagi ng baha. So as soon as we can, we will go in.
03:02... Kung kailangan, di naman mailipad ng helicopter yan. So kailangan talaga, kailangan truck ang magpapasok. So as soon as magbank clear, alam naman ng DPWH na gawin nila.
03:19... ng kamonitor naman sila, nandoon naman ng mga tao nila, mga regional officers, para magsabi when they can come in. So that's what we're waiting for now.
03:30... We are at the mercy of the weather as we always are. So we will just have to wait for the true effects of this typhoon.
03:48...
