00:00How's everybody doing?
00:00Good morning, how are you?
00:02Good, thank you.
00:04Still got my shorts on, still.
00:05Although I woke up this morning and that was the first time, I was like, okay,
00:10that's a little late.
00:11Honey, I think I'm starting to use the garage, not you.
00:13You know what I'm saying?
00:14Something that Jacob Meyers said after the game,
00:19we asked him about how you guys have played along the first quarter.
00:22He said he thinks early on, you guys are really sharp about details.
00:28But it kind of fades a little later in the game.
00:30From a coaching perspective,
00:31how do you kind of correct that to make sure guys are consistent when it comes to
00:34being detailed?
00:35Yeah, I think it's mental and physical stamina.
00:38I think that's something that we talked about from way back when.
00:41I think there's opportunities too, right?
00:45And I think that you go into that first and second drive and
00:48guys are doing a really nice job.
00:50And long drives, there's a lot of execution that's good.
00:53And then we just kind of, whatever, took the mindset in that end of that first
00:57half and we ended up having a punt.
01:00You gotta be able to turn that off and turn it back on when that second half
01:03starts, and that's that mental and physical stamina we talked about.
01:06Where you have a little wall when you're playing, and
01:10then it's time to go rock and roll again.
01:12So you have the halftime, but you gotta get out there and
01:13you gotta be ready to rock and roll.
01:14And so I don't think that's any one particular thing.
01:18I think it's a continued purpose and focus when you're out in the practice field
01:22to make sure that everyone's sharp on every detail.
01:25From the coaching perspective, we can all, as the game's going along,
01:28we can do a better job in the game,
01:29making sure that we're all prepared before we head back out there in every aspect.
01:33Is it part of it, I mean, I think we've all made a big deal of the early script and
01:37that's where I'm sure the last four games were when we got a touchdown.
01:40It's almost like too much focus on these are the players we're running and
01:44everybody and all the players are on board and then kind of as the game goes on.
01:48I know you like that buzzword, you guys all like that buzzword, Sheriff did.
01:51But it's not real, we just wanna make sure you understand that.
01:53So it's not like we just say, hey, first and
01:55ten we're gonna take a five yard penalty at a false start, then we get rolling again.
01:58So that wasn't scripted, but no, listen, you go through a plan and you have a plan.
02:04So the guys are dialed into, when we're on the 35 yard line, and
02:09these are the things that we're gonna attack them with.
02:10When we're on the 25 yard line, these are the way we're gonna attack them.
02:13And if it's third and three, this is the way we're gonna attack them and
02:16there's nothing different.
02:17So this is how we're gonna open the game.
02:19This is how we're gonna continue to play the game.
02:20These are the plays off of the plays after we get to collect information.
02:23So there's not a script, there's not like this laid out thing.
02:27It's a focus and attention to detail.
02:29And I think as far as the preparation part of it,
02:32I think it proves that we're doing a good job as far as how we wanna attack people.
02:36We just gotta continue to improve on that execution part,
02:38making sure that it can sustain for four quarters and not kinda be patchy.
02:42First quarter, second quarter was good, and then you had the two minute, and
02:45then come back strong in the fourth quarter.
02:47So you had that little wall in the third quarter this time.
02:49So we just gotta make sure we continue to get more consistent in all that.
02:51Coach, when it comes down to trying to maximize on scoring touchdowns when you
02:54get in the red zone or out of goal line situations, when you watch film,
02:57is there anything that you think can be betterly executed in terms of maybe
03:00a formation in the backfield with somebody blocking or routes run?
03:03What do you think can help enhance that?
03:06Yeah, I don't think so.
03:07I think we've been pretty good in the goal.
03:08I know we had the instance in the Rams where we didn't score, and
03:11then this past one that we didn't score.
03:12But I think that we've been pretty good going two for four, and
03:15the goal isn't the worst in the world.
03:16But obviously, when you get a turnover, you wanna put that in, right?
03:21Cuz that can change the momentum of a football game.
03:22I think that's where the dynamic of that situation is more so
03:26than anything else.
03:27I think the plans have been pretty good, and
03:30I think the guys get it by the time we're going out there.
03:31So it's when you get in those moments, everyone's gotta be on the same page.
03:36Head coach, coordinator, players, we all gotta be on the same page.
03:39Let's have a clear message about exactly what we wanna get done.
03:43It was like a two and a half quarter period that we're blocking the ball.
03:47That's what they were doing, or what do you see in that time period?
03:52I mean, first, what was it, 13 play drive, right?
03:55And then a 10 play, and that was it.
03:57So we only had two real drives in that first half.
04:00So that's part of it, right?
04:01There's your first quarter, or whatever you wanna call it.
04:04Then the second quarter, we started off, we missed that opportunity with Tuck.
04:09And then so it was three and out.
04:10So that's, they had long drives, they were converting third down.
04:14So it's time sustained, and I think that's what Kansas City's always done,
04:18a great job of kind of playing keep away from the other teams as well.
04:20So Brock's a big part of what we do, and yes, teams are gonna be affected by him.
04:25And now I think now that we start to get some guys back from injury,
04:28I think that'll help all that stuff out, and we'll continue to play off of that.
04:32But no, are they changing what they did?
04:35No, I mean, in the middle of a game,
04:36everybody, defenses are really good in this league.
04:38And when you attack them and they feel like there's a weakness,
04:40then they're gonna make some adjustments, too.
04:43Now that Brock Bowers is getting so much attention now from defenses,
04:47how much of a challenge is it for you to be able to continue and
04:50make sure that he's involved in the offense and get him open looks?
04:53Yeah, I mean, absolutely.
04:54I mean, that's the name of this game, right?
04:55Your best players gotta play their best.
04:57And if you're gonna play the two-time reigning world champions,
05:00you gotta make sure that your best players are doing what they do.
05:02And so that's important always.
05:04And that's always gonna be a focus of what we do.
05:07How would you assess Jackson Power Johnson when he split over the center of
05:11the game, and what's your confidence level on him?
05:15Should he have to play center again this week?
05:18Yeah, I think that's a credit to all those guys.
05:20It's Cody jumping in there, it's Jackson, it's Jordan being there to help out, too.
05:25I think that's the cool part about it.
05:27Those guys have been forced into a lot of different roles already in such
05:31a short season already.
05:32And so I think for a young rookie to be able to go and handle it,
05:35handle the mental part of it, I think that part of it is cool to see.
05:39And to know that we have multiple people that can do that,
05:41that's a big benefit to us.
05:43Cuz crazy things happen, and people are gonna have to dance around them up front,
05:47and they're gonna have to play some positions maybe they didn't practice that
05:49much, and Jackson's an example.
05:52I don't know if he had one rep at center leading up to that week, but
05:55he was prepared for the moment and went and did a good job.
05:58Luke, we're about halfway through the season.
05:59What has been the biggest challenge either for yourself or for
06:01the offense as a unit so far this season?
06:05Well, I think this league, anytime you're in this league, it's a challenge.
06:10You got great players on every team.
06:11So every down, every first down, every touchdown is hard to get.
06:15And I think that that's no different this year to any other year.
06:19I think we're in a new system, we got the new players, first time head coach.
06:25We're all working together to get this ship right and
06:29to get this thing going in the same direction.
06:31And it's a process that continues to improve.
06:34The game day communication, the practice, the way we practice, and
06:38the expectations every single day, and on the game day, and all that stuff.
06:42I think all of that stuff is just continuing to get better, and
06:44I think that's the challenge.
06:45Anytime you're a new operation, you have a lot of things to work through.
06:49And I think, I just see us getting better each and
06:52every week as we go through these processes.
06:54If Andre can't go, and then Dylan can, I know he's played some left guard before,
06:59where he's played right guard this year.
07:01Is there any consideration of moving him back to left guard in that kind of
07:04a situation?
07:05Yeah, I think it's just in such a flux right now that everything's on the table,
07:09honestly.
07:09So I think everyone, that's the cool part.
07:12When you have guys that are smart, like Dylan, and Cody, and Jordan, and Jackson,
07:15you're able to kind of figure out at the end of the week what's the best fit, and
07:18what makes the most sense get going.
07:19But honestly, everything's on the table right now.
07:22Seems like let's pick up a little bit of an issue this year.
07:25The Chiefs started with a lot of setbacks last week.
07:28What can you guys do to get better in that area?
07:30Well, the second half, they were outnumbering us, so that's different.
07:33That's not picking up anything.
07:34That's, you saw the response by Gardner throwing some flats and
07:37things like that, getting the ball out.
07:38That's your only answer when they're gonna outnumber you.
07:41The one at the end, the kind of shut down at the end of the second quarter drive,
07:45that was just a missed assignment.
07:47So clean up young guy missed assignments,
07:48like you have to fight through that stuff.
07:51I know that whatever I read said something about critical penalties on stuff.
07:55The reality was they really weren't critical because we overcame all of them.
07:58We were able to score points.
07:59And every time that we had three false starts in the hole in,
08:02we were still able to go get points in those drives.
08:05It's those critical errors in those moments, like a protection.
08:09We had the two minute drive where they brought the cap corner and
08:12we didn't make sure the protection went the other way.
08:13Or we didn't throw hot or, like I said,
08:17the other one where the guy didn't make the right decision.
08:19That stuff happens in games and you gotta overcome them.
08:21And I think the cool part is that you saw penalties that we didn't get distracted
08:25by first and 15 or we're going in the goal and then we had two false starts.
08:29We put Dez out there for the one and something happened.
08:32Those guys didn't blink.
08:33If they responded the right way, they went right back out there and
08:35we continued to move the drive and we got points.
08:37And I think that's, talk about where's the growth and
08:40stuff like that's where I'm seeing from this football team.
08:42What gives you hope that the right game can be turned around?
08:47Yeah, listen, you have games where, and
08:50obviously it's a little bit of extreme when it's like that.
08:52But you have games that go that way and they're a really good front.
08:54I mean, they're a downhill football team that there's a reason why they're top three
08:58or whatever it is against the run.
09:00And that's why we had to throw it some, throw it a little bit more.
09:03And I think it's finding that good balance.
09:05And when you have the balance, then the other one just starts to pick itself up.
09:07And we'll continue to grow through that and get everybody on the same page.
09:12Last one, guys.
09:13Yeah, when Bayard lines up as a wide receiver and not asking for
09:16all the answers to that, you're probably looking for
09:19the defense to react a certain way, I would imagine.
09:23If you can shed any light on what that might be or what you're kind of looking for.
09:26I mean, when you do things like that, those are just like unscouted looks, right?
09:30So you're gonna get, what's their particular response?
09:32So then that way when you move forward, okay, when they have an unscouted look,
09:35we anticipate like this is gonna be their response.
09:38And so when you do something like that, when you do,
09:41you don't wanna have them always in at the tight end.
09:43We're always running to them, we're always running away from them,
09:45we're always in the protection.
09:46You wanna make sure that you have enough that they have to be prepared for
09:49as they're going through their game week as well.
09:51All right, thanks guys.
09:52Thanks guys.
