00:00Authorities in Palawan are making sure the province has a steady water supply when El Niño strikes by constructing a P3 billion peso water impounding dam.
00:10Philippine Information Agency, Palawan's Rachel Ganachel filed this report.
00:18The P3 billion peso worth of water impounding structure of the Puerto Pincesa City Water District is seen as a response to ensure water supply.
00:26Despite the anticipated increase in demand, in the next El Niño, Puerto Pincesa City Water District General Manager Walter Laurel said the project will divert the flow of water from rivers to store it for the dry season.
00:40It will be constructed in the 120-hectare land area inside the city government's Santa Lucia Environmental Estate.
00:48The study on the project has been completed and is now set to be presented for the City Council's approval of the segregation of land portions.
00:57The flow of our rivers is decreasing, this is where we will get the augmentation of our supply.
01:03So for now, our geotechnical investigation has been completed, we have proven in the study conducted by our consultant that the land below is non-permeable, it can hold water.
01:16The facility will also serve as a flood control measure and facilitate recreational activities.
01:22Estimates put the cost between P3 and P4 billion pesos, but Laurel acknowledged that the City Water District cannot handle it alone without the national government's support.
01:32The City Water District is also in active partnership with both the public and private sectors to manage the cost.
01:39The projection of demand is expected to reach about 10 million liters per day in the next three years.
01:45We will adopt this in the DNRDPWH multi-use infrastructure project.
01:53So this is a flood control project, at the same time water impounding.
01:58The project will benefit the 55,981 active service connections from 54 barangays connected to the City Water District.
02:07From the Philippine Information Agency, MIMA ROPA, Racial Garantial, Balitang Pampansa.
