00:00Bruce may be back but does he have what it takes? Here's a look at McFarlane Toys
00:04DC Multiverse The Dark Knight Returns Battle Damage Blue Batman
00:30This masterpiece of comic storytelling brings to life a dark world and even darker man.
00:35Frank Miller completely reinvents the legend of Batman in the saga of a near-future Gotham
00:39City gone to rot ten years after the Dark Knight's retirement. Ten years later and it goes to show
00:44you may be able to take the man out of the crime-fighting life but you can't take the
00:47crime-fighting life out of the man. Just before of course we get a closer look at the Dark Knight
00:51Returns Battle Damage Blue Batman I'd like to thank the folks over at McFarlane Toys that did
00:55provide this sample we could have a look at. All this week in fact we've been looking at new
00:59offerings from McFarlane Toys and it doesn't get any bit better than the Battle Damage Blue Batman
01:03from the Dark Knight Returns. A classic story. The figure though of Batman is going to be pretty
01:08much using the same mold as the one that we got from before. Although you can see now he's got
01:11all this battle damage effects added on to him. The figure is still going to stand at seven inches
01:16in height where Battle Damage Blue Batman is going to be about 17 and a half centimeters tall.
01:22Of course when you know it I was talking about this figure being a reused mold from the Dark
01:25Knight Returns one we already received and yet I couldn't find the figure at the time of hitting
01:29record. The figure had been stored away for several months. I was just updating my shelf
01:33well way back I think in summertime and a lot of those figures just went back on toast. So I thought
01:37I would go back to the place where I always would end up going looking for DC multiverse figures
01:41that I don't have on display. Couldn't find the Batman. I would certainly say though if you guys
01:46want to go and check out my full reviews of all the Dark Knight Returns wave that same wave was
01:50the wave we built a horse of course. Of course though one thing I do have at least is a couple
01:55of figures from the Dark Knight Returns. So here's what Bruce looks like along with Clark Kent or aka
02:00Superman and here's also what he looks like with the Robin equivalent from the Dark Knight Returns
02:04Carrie Kelly. You really get your money's worth when it comes to this Batman as he comes in clue
02:08with quite a lot of accessories. Granted yes some of those things may be things that we've already
02:12gotten with the Batmans from before but at least they're giving a brand new coat of paint and we
02:16also got ourselves a lamp as well just before we start building ourselves some lights. Let's look
02:21at those some of the other things the figure comes in clue with like a trading card. The trading card
02:24does depict Frank Miller's epic story of the Dark Knight Returns. A bruised a battered Batman. On
02:30the side you can see it says McFarland collector edition. On the back it does give not so much a
02:34real name. I mean I was kind of surprised that they didn't actually include that but what it does do
02:38include at least is a small little paragraph read. It's very easy for you to simply sit there and
02:43read that. Probably would only take you a couple of seconds. It only took me a couple of seconds
02:47because it's the same thing I read at the beginning of this review. Don't tell everybody. I'll just end
02:51up doing it for everybody else as well. So I'm going to move the card out of the way. The figure
02:54also comes in clue with a display stand. Not a whole lot of frills go into this. Sometimes with
02:59collector's edition releases from McFarland you usually get like the silver DC logo down below
03:03here but you don't. You just get a regular black DC logo instead. I thought that was scratching
03:08into just being a hair. There's a not a hair though but there's a peg to the far corner
03:12that can plug into either one of Batman's boots. The figure like I said does also come
03:17included with a lamp. Now this is pretty cool. The lamp does come with two parts. So you get the main
03:22neck of the lamp with some details down below here as well and then you also get of course
03:27the main bulb piece. Now don't just simply think of this and think of this and think the two go
03:32together so quickly. If you look at it on the bottom of it one is a slightly wider slot and
03:37one's a thinner slot. When you're putting this onto the top of the lamp you'll notice that there's a
03:41wider opening and then there's a slightly more narrower opening. So when you put it in place you
03:47have to make sure you're putting it the right way. That just snaps in place and yeah just like that
03:51we've got lights. The only thing about the light though, the lamp that is, is it's a very small base.
03:57I mean there's nothing really occupying real estate space around it. I have noticed a couple
04:01of times when I put it down on Batman if you bang it or if you just put it down quickly sometimes
04:06the lamp does fall over. It would be nice if they had included a bit of the concrete or pavement
04:11around it just a little more of a solidifying stable base just so that the lamp wouldn't fall
04:16forward. Like it's it weevils just a little bit but I guess it gets the job done. Some of
04:22the things that we've also gotten from this Batman before is the batarang. The batarang already has
04:27as you can see an extended rope. The rope is tied off here in a loop. This does fit in his hands
04:31although it's not going to obviously fit in the hands that he has. Don't worry though the figure
04:35does also have some gripping hands so you can actually swap out the hands that he has right now
04:39in favor of hands that are going to be good for holding this. This works only so well depending
04:44on how you pose this. You can't really make it look like Batman's throwing the batarang but you
04:48can kind of have it look like he's holding it like this. In fact actually if you want to change the
04:51hands he actually has a dynamic hand on one side and then he also has the hand on this side that
04:57has the built-in batarangs. Now from what I remember the original Batman did have the batarang
05:02hand although they were colored differently. They have only just molded this all in the blue plastic
05:07so along with that all the batarangs are all colored the exact same as well. Just nice if they
05:11had added a little bit of color to that but let's just say for this you want to remove the hands.
05:15You're just going to pop them off from the provided pegs. Take of course the hand that you want to use.
05:19Batman in the future otherwise still will have thumbs that go in. We're just going to put that
05:24onto the peg of course then you can get yourself the batarang. Put the batarang in one of his hands
05:29and you can also really too you can just have the other hand although obviously this is the hand
05:32that you're going to want to do with this but you can have the other hand sort of holding the loop
05:36so get the hand in one side. Why am I struggling with this?
05:40There we go. Get the hand in one holding one end of it and then just use your imagination. You
05:44basically have the other hand holding like that. That's one of the options available. I'm sure you
05:47can come up with a much more creative way. Spend a little bit more time talking about that. We want
05:52to spend more time actually talking about the other things that come included with the figure
05:55so let's just remove this for right now. He does also come included with like I said the gripping
06:01hand so we've already gone ahead and changed that out but one of the coolest accessories that the
06:04figure comes included with happens just to be the decapitated head that's right over there of Bruce
06:09Wayne himself. Before we look at that let's look at this. The figure itself does have not necessarily
06:16as the defaulted head because I actually had to swap the heads out before hitting record.
06:21He comes with a cowled headpiece. One thing I really like about the cowl piece is if you take
06:26yourself the lamp light let's say for all intents and purposes the lamp is actually shining above
06:30Batman's head. They have illuminated in such a way let's get that to stand here for a second kind
06:35of already see what I'm talking about the lamp just sways a little bit too much but if you look
06:40at this though it actually looks as if the lamp light's hitting it dead on because this part of
06:44his cowl is a little bit brighter. You can also see that around his eyebrows if I get my hands out
06:49of the way and there are a few little suggested ideas that there's light hitting the cape as well.
06:54I think that's really cool. It's nowhere found to be and nowhere else to be found on the figure
06:58itself so you won't see it on his shoulders you won't see it on his gloves but the fact that they
07:02add just a little bit of light source to the way they've colored the head is really cool. Of course
07:08you've got some nice darker colors there also around his eyes you've got a few little scratched
07:12in panel lining there to the top of his brow there as well. Overall just a nice looking head sculpt.
07:17If it wasn't so for the fact that I was more enticed by the idea of getting the Bruce Wayne
07:21head sculpt on there I would be very happy very happy just to display the Batman with this cowl
07:25piece instead. I think it's just really cool the fact that they actually lighten the color of the
07:29cowl to match like if the light source was actually shining down on it. Maybe not doing it what I'm
07:34doing right now but yeah so if you want to change out the head basically the alternative to that
07:39is an unmasked Bruce Wayne head sculpt. Might be I think the first time that we've gotten a
07:44Dark Knight Returns Bruce Wayne head. You can correct me if I'm wrong down below in the comment section.
07:48You can certainly see that this would be this if he only just had a cowl over top of it.
07:53Sculpting on both of them is fantastic but you know the thing about it though is that it's too
07:57good of a head I feel to put back in a bag. If I ever feel myself saying that then that's usually
08:01the idea it's usually the suggestion I need to then swap out the head sculpts and display it
08:05with this figure instead. Now to change out the heads I noticed with this Batman it was a lot
08:09harder to put onto the ball peg. I in fact had to go and heat the head just enough so it would
08:14actually attach properly to the ball joint. It's stubborn. I think a lot of it also has to do with
08:19the fact that the ball joint and the hole that was inside the head cavity seem to be the exact
08:24same size. So if you're struggling to get this head onto this ball joint follow maybe the same
08:29advice. Heat the head in hot water or even just a hairdryer trick would be fine. Soften up just
08:33enough of the hole so it would fit better onto the ball joint. So from there what we're going to do
08:37then is take the alternate head sculpt for Bruce Wayne and this head because this was the one that
08:41came out of the packaging with it's a lot easier to attach onto the ball joint and that's what it
08:46looks like. Now admittingly though it does kind of look like he has very little of a neck but other
08:51than that though like the head sculpt is fantastic. I think they've done a nice job of coloring the
08:56gray here so it isn't just solely just white alone. It almost looks like they kind of started
08:59with a darker color and then brushed on the lighter coloring of the white over top of it.
09:04The wrinkles show a lot nicer here at this. I just feel like there's a lot of more time that
09:08they've spent painting this head sculpt. He gets a lot more afforded paint than maybe some of
09:12the other DC multiverse figures we've gotten in the past. Of course for his outfit same body I'm
09:17thinking is the one that we got from the Dark Knight Returns. The now notable things is the
09:20fact he does have ripped sections on his costume. So he's got on his shoulders a few claw marks
09:25there on the front of his chest. These by the way don't seem like they're sculpted so probably what
09:29they've only just done is painted on top the existing armor or the existing mold. He's also
09:34got here as well little tears there. He's got a few little tears there also on his thigh and on
09:37his knee. Other than that though it seems to be the same Batman maybe perhaps just a little bit
09:41lighter of a color. I remember like the other one being a little bit more of a darker gray.
09:45This lighter gray much lighter more vibrant blue and a much brighter yellow utility belt too. I
09:50just love the look of that. For the figure's articulation going back to Bruce's head the
09:54head's going to rotate for all intents and purposes all the way around. It can look down
09:59and it can look up. I know it doesn't really look like I'm doing much of anything but it moves only
10:03just a little bit. You can also rock it back and forth as well. Upper torso is going to be on a
10:07ball joint a little more on the stiffer side. He also has a ball joint at the base of his abdomen
10:11too. The arms rotate all the way around all the way around a hinge out at 90 degrees. The figure
10:17does have not necessarily a bicep swivel. You'll see that the bicep is actually built to the rest
10:22of his shoulder. What he does have though is a swivel in his forearm. He has a bend there also
10:27as well just a single hinge and the hands rotate all the way around. This whole time of also talking
10:31about this you may have already noticed the fact he also has a plastic cape. They haven't upgraded
10:35this guy to a fabric cape but one thing at least though is the consistency of this guy basically
10:40having the exact same cape as the other Dark Knight Returns Batman. So it doesn't look like he's
10:43necessarily different. I think if you were going to be giving us a completely brand new Batman from
10:47a completely different story that doesn't already have those existing characters then would be the
10:52good time I think to introduce fabric capes. But because we already have this Batman and part of
10:56a Dark Knight Returns wave I think keeping it with a plastic cape is a better idea.
11:00As for his legs, his legs split out. You can take them and move them of course forward and back.
11:04He has a swivel cut actually three cores the way up the thigh although it's just really tight in
11:09this figure. Double hinge on the knee. No articulation here for the boots but what he does
11:13have though is an ankle pivot. Move it back and forth. You can also rock it this way as well
11:17and of course this Batman does have toe articulation. The thing about this is both of the
11:22head sculpts are really good. I mean even though this was the one that we sort of started. Well
11:27that's what the figure I started with when I took this guy first out of the packaging.
11:31Beelined it back to just the regular Batman head because I want to start the review looking like
11:34this. I think both head sculpts are fantastic. One additional thing I really liked is that they
11:40added little highlights to the top of the cowl so it does look like the lamp is shining down on it.
11:45Now of course you've got some of that suggested there as well in the cape. I think though really
11:48between the two unless I end up getting a second one of these twist my rubber arm I think for right
11:53now I'm probably going to display this with the Bruce Wayne head sculpt. Again it's too good of a
11:56head to put back in a bag with all the other accessories. I really like the way that this
12:00guy turned out. The icing on the cake of course to this is not just the fact that he comes in
12:03clue with all the accessories that the original Dark Knight Returns Batman came in clue with like
12:06the batarang like the batarang hand but that he also comes in clue with the lamp. The lamp
12:12admittingly though is a little more unstable just because again like it's a very small footprint.
12:18Of course you've got the overhang of the bulb there as well. Had they only just added maybe
12:22just a little bit of extra space there around it I think it would help just to keep the lamp a
12:26little bit more stable. Other than that though a fantastic looking Batman. If you're a fan of the
12:31Dark Knight Returns like I'm a fan of the Dark Knight Returns and want to get a bruised and
12:35battered Bruce this is the best one going on the market right now. When we did get that original
12:39Dark Knight Returns wave I kept wondering are they going to release this mold again but with
12:43a Bruce Wayne head sculpt instead. Well we had to wait a little while but not only did we get one
12:48that had a Bruce Wayne head but we also got one with two heads instead of just the one. Now both
12:53heads if you want to have the figure displayed as a bruised and battered Batman hey why not you can
12:57do that but if you want to have him displayed instead with the cowl piece completely off
13:01there's that option available as well. Something though I didn't mention in this review is one
13:06little added touch that I would have loved to have seen this figure have is part of the folded back
13:11cowl as being something that could go on the back of the figure's body you know just around his neck
13:14before you put the head back in place that would be a nice little additional piece so it didn't
13:19look like Batman had to yank the cowl off he just basically peeled it back. Other than that though
13:23you can see a lot of more of the changes here to this figure are cosmetic than actual sculpt
13:27changes and everything that you're seeing here from a torn and tattered costume have only been
13:32effectively done by paint. I don't think they had to necessarily break up the mold by retooling new
13:37pieces to it. Painting it in is more than enough. I don't expect them to start to invest in a brand
13:42new tool of a mold when the mold that we had already was perfectly fine. The mold coloring
13:48though is very much different from the original Batman going with much more the brighter grays
13:52and a much more vibrant blue. Those little accents though of the light source coming down from the
13:56lamp are all welcomed additions to this Batman. It's a nice looking figure. Still though you're
14:01going to be getting a lot of the accessories that the original previous Batman got from before but
14:04this one also does one thing other he gets himself a lamp. Now this is could be maybe a trend that
14:10could continue with future figure releases where McFarlane may include accessories that you may see
14:14on the city streets of Gotham City. Fingers crossed that that's the case. What do you guys think of
14:18this figure? Let me know down below in the comment section. If you do end up wanting to pick up this
14:22figure let me know which head sculpt would you go with the Batman cowl piece head or the Bruce
14:26Wayne head sculpt instead. Big thank you once again to the folks over at McFarlane Toys that did
14:30provide this sample of the brand new this was the Dark Knight Returns battle I think was battle
14:35damage blue Batman. I don't even know how I'm going to be able to fit that all in the title.
14:39What would be a lot easier though to do is if you guys did enjoy this video do it a solid throw it
14:43a like. You guys want to stick around for more so I hope so. Hit the subscribe turn on that bell but
14:48the most important thing is that you're coming back. As always thanks for watching see you guys
14:52next time.
