00:00from NBA Cup action to some top 25 tilts tonight on the hardwood in college
00:11basketball the best game of this Tuesday night slate takes place in Milwaukee
00:16it's Marquette as a four and a half point home favorite now the number 15
00:21team in the country taking on a Purdue team that has moved up the board in
00:26terms of the rankings yesterday they moved up by seven spots they are now
00:31ranked sixth in the nation four and a half points spread in favor of the
00:35Golden Eagles as they welcome in the Boilermakers tonight a couple of huge
00:41wins for these two programs Joe over the weekend both on Friday Marquette won
00:45outright as a short underdog in College Park against Maryland on Friday evening
00:51Purdue as a home dog in Mackey against that number two Alabama a very
00:56impressive victory here is Marquette now as a favorite against the Boilermakers
01:02tonight in Milwaukee what's the play yeah this Purdue team I still have my
01:10question marks I mean both these teams come in 4-0 which is nice I mean
01:15Marquette at home now with Shock is Smart what are they 9-1 I believe in
01:19their last 10 they don't tend to lose very often and the thing that concerns
01:24me with Purdue is that if it isn't Brandon Smith they're they're three guys
01:30here they don't have any bench they didn't add anybody in the transfer
01:35portal Ben they I mean the bulk of their scoring comes from Smith Wren and lawyer
01:40those are their three guys that combined for 51 points a game outside of that
01:45they got nobody no absolutely no production from the bench whatsoever and
01:50I think that's gonna be a problem against Marquette at home because if
01:54Marquette defensively has the kind of effort I believe they're gonna bring
01:59here man one of those guys has an off night for Purdue you're not winning this
02:04game on the road I think Marquette at four and a half is actually pretty cheap
02:07a lot of great experience back for shock of smarts team you look at names like
02:13Cam Jones David Joplin Kevin Mitchell people are Stevie Mitchell excuse me
02:17names that we have seen for Marquette in the last few years Braden Smith is back
02:22for Purdue the best point guard in the country in my estimation Fletcher lawyer
02:26can he hit the long ball and Trey Kaufman red has been huge for Purdue and
02:31was huge against Alabama on Friday night so was CJ Cox the young player for this
02:37Purdue team that stepped up in a big way and lit a fire to this Purdue
02:42offense from deep on Friday night against the tide but when you look at
02:47Marquette in this spot inside the Pfizer forum just seems like the numbers make
02:52sense to see the Golden Eagles as a four and a half point favorite again these
02:57are going to be two good teams both in contention to win their conference
03:01crowns Big Ten action for the Boilermakers does the conference still
03:05run through Purdue that we shall debate with John Rothstein in just a little bit
03:09and Marquette of course will be competitive in a highly competitive Big
03:14East along the lines of UConn Creighton and st. John some other notable Tuesday
03:20games Joe around the country the number one team in action Kansas twenty three
03:25and a half point favorite against UNC Wilmington at home in the fog
03:29UConn now number two in the country continues to dismantle teams in non
03:34conference action they haven't played all that many good teams so far but a
03:38thirty seven and a half point favorite Kentucky up by ten spots following what
03:43they did last Tuesday in the Champions Classic in the outright victory against
03:47Duke Kentucky was 19th now inside the top ten at number nine the Cats Joe 21
03:54and a half point favorite tonight against Lipscomb yeah and I will just
03:59mention too by the way that win against Alabama was at Mackey Arena they ain't
04:03playing Mackey Arena tonight for Purdue so that's a that's going to be a
04:07different animal altogether here am I nuts here Ben or am I just gonna have to
04:12call the outright upset here with Hofstra taking down Florida State I said
04:16it and there it is I'll just leave it out I think Hofstra what is it getting
04:23seven and a half here I think they're a live dog here tonight and I think the
04:27line is way off by the way with Louisiana taking on Rice here tonight my
04:33number has this game much higher than what we're seeing than what it should be
04:37right now and I think that's a short number so that's another one off the
04:41board here that you've got yourself a pretty good spot here to be able to win
04:46a couple of games and make some pretty decent money here tonight the pride of
04:51Hofstra going into Tallahassee and winning all right that is what Joe
04:56Ranieri is saying against Florida State it's a seven and a half point spread
05:00right now in favor of the Knowles Florida still a top 25 team they're
05:05laying 35 and a half against FAMU just quickly on Connecticut they have been
05:10favored by at least 35 points in all three games this year they have covered
05:15the number in all three they have scored 90 plus in all three they continue to
05:20dismantle teams in non-conference action and oh by the way and all three wins
05:26this year for Dan Hurley's Huskies the total has stayed under Dan Hurley does
05:30not need motivation but the fact perhaps that Connecticut is not number one in
05:34the country early here in the season continues to provide that Kentucky did
05:40not go over against Duke last Tuesday night in Atlanta in the Champions
05:44Classic but in the two non power conference matchups for Kentucky they
05:49have scored at least a hundred and gone over I expect them to find some really
05:54good offense tonight against Lipscomb I'll highlight two big ten games off the
05:59board about Sanford heading into the breads tonight
06:02on Michigan State total 160 and a half we know Sanford based on what they did
06:08last year and that 512 matchup against Kansas can play with some pace I like
06:15the over of 160 and a half Montana State already covered earlier this year in a
06:20big ten game against Wisconsin they are not as good as they were with Danny
06:25Sprinkle who now of course is the head coach over at Washington just one in
06:29three this year Joe but I think they might keep it within the number against
06:33the Northwestern team that is just one in three against the spread this year
06:37that's a 15 and a half point spread in favor of the Wildcats tonight yeah I
06:42that's no that's just not a no but that number is absolutely absurd no
06:49absolutely not and I would much rather know I'll tell you what I would play
06:54though if you're gonna look at a game that just seems to be completely off how
06:58is Villanova laying two touchdowns against anybody am I missing against
07:03Penn I mean it feels like a dead under but there's no way I trust Neptune and
07:10Villanova here to be winning any games by margin at this particular point it's
07:14either Dixon or bust I think it's a bust and I think the under is probably the
07:18best luck in that game again it's a big five battle right in Philadelphia before
07:24Villanova and what happened exactly a week ago against st. Joe's as a slight
07:30favorite they lost that game outright it has been an uneasy beginning to this
07:36season they got beat by Virginia on Friday night in Baltimore in a game many
07:41people said huh this isn't 2016 or any more for Nova things are getting bad
07:47really fast for Kyle Neptune to the point where we might start having some
07:53scuttlebutt about maybe looking for a new head coach the era parent that Jay
07:57Wright was always going to be difficult I'll say this show Nova's gone over in
08:01five all five games this year 141 and a half is the number tonight against Penn
08:07this is still November and this is the start of week number three in full of
08:13the 2024-25 college basketball season which means only one thing here on this
08:20Tuesday on the early line John Rothstein is now on the show of course with CBS
08:25Sports and here on SportsGrid on behalf of Fanduel Rothstein as always we
08:30appreciate the time thank you for being here on this Tuesday it's week number
08:34three and John we're nine days away from Turkey Day Thanksgiving and in a week
08:39leading up to Turkey Day it's when we get some of those great non-conference
08:44tournaments and the competition ramps up just a little bit it definitely does I
08:50would say that if conference play is kind of the main appetizer for the
08:56college basketball season feast week is the charcuterie board and Ben you know
09:00nobody loves a good meat and cheese plate more than me John Rothstein always
09:04knows how to put together a charcuterie board and we'll do that here on this
09:09Tuesday John a really good game tonight in Milwaukee inside the Pfizer Forum
09:14it's a top 15 tilt between Marquette who is 15th in the country after a good win
09:19on Friday against Purdue's fellow Big Ten team in Maryland in Purdue up seven
09:25spots to number six in the country after winning outright as a home underdog
09:30against Alabama in Mackey on Friday night as well love having you here early
09:35in the season not so much to break down the game but really what we're going to
09:39learn about both teams in this marquee matchup let's start with the Boilermakers
09:43a road dog in Milwaukee but John of course after losing Zach Eadie what do
09:48college basketball fans need to know about this year's version of the
09:51Boilermakers? The three returning starters for Purdue from last year's
09:56team that lost in the national title game to UConn Brayden Smith Flesher
09:59Lawyer and Trey Kaufman Wren are the epicenter of this team that's the
10:03Boilers big three Brayden Smith right now is playing like one of the best four
10:07or five guards in all of college basketball is filling the box score
10:11dishing rebounding scoring and Trey Kaufman Wren is giving Purdue a
10:15different look as an interior focal point 26 and 8 against Alabama last week
10:22at Mackey Arena and you know one thing I want to point out I was out of Purdue
10:27practice two years ago and Matt Painter told me Trey Kaufman Wren has all big
10:32ten first team ability we might just not see that for a couple years because he's
10:36playing next to somebody up front in Zach Eadie Trey Kaufman Wren has the
10:41goods and I firmly think that Purdue found a lineup down the stretch of the
10:46game last week when Trey Kaufman Wren slid to the five and Cam Heide played
10:50the four better spacing for Purdue on offense. Some of that depth will be in
10:55question but the freshman CJ Cox who had 11 burying three triples on Friday
11:00night against the Crimson Tide providing that offensive spark Marquette the
11:04victory already against Maryland remaining in the top 15 and John a
11:08four-and-a-half point favorite at home tonight Chaka smarts team returns a lot
11:13of experience what do you anticipate the Golden Eagles show tonight against
11:17Purdue? You know another showcase game for Cam Jones who is playing right now
11:22like a first-team all-american and it's not just how well he's playing it's how
11:26efficiently he's playing right now entering tonight's game against Purdue
11:31Cam Jones is shooting over 54% from three averaging 24 game 5-6 assists
11:39rebounding the basketball then you know as well as I do that's illegal in 48
11:42states Marquette doesn't have what it had last season with Colic and Oso
11:48but it still has enough to be one of the best teams in the Big East Chaka smart
11:53has built a culture of retention at Marquette the Golden Eagles and the
11:57Boilers two programs in college basketball that did not bring up bring
12:03in a transfer during the offseason but then you know as well as I do this is
12:08only November. It is only November but experience certainly matters in March
12:13let's go to the Big East Connecticut in action tonight 37 and a half point
12:18favorite is UConn they've been dismantling teams as we have seen
12:22throughout non-conference action in the last two plus years still the favorites
12:27Stan Hurley's Huskies to win the Big East at plus 135 John including Marquette
12:32if you were to look elsewhere around the league who is UConn's best competition
12:36in the Big East? I see five teams right now at the top of the Big East that are
12:41NCAA tournament contention. UConn, Creighton, Marquette are the returning
12:45commodities from last season and now a healthy Xavier with Zach Fremantle and
12:50Jerome Hunter back under Sean Miller looks to me like a clear-cut NCAA
12:54tournament team and St. John's under Rick Pitino with Qadari Richmond, Davon
12:59Smith and Simeon Wiltshire in the backcourt looks like an NCAA tournament
13:02team. This is a very very big week for the Red Storm who will play Baylor in
13:07Bahamar on Thursday then either Tennessee or Virginia on Friday
13:11followed up by a game against Georgia potential bubble team out of the SEC on
13:17Sunday so the Red Storm will know in the next six days a lot about where they
13:20stand moving forward in year two under Rick Pitino. And John quickly back to
13:25the Big Ten Purdue still booked as the favorites to win a conference
13:28championship this season in your estimation does a Big Ten regular season
13:33title still run through West Lafayette? Yes until proven otherwise I think you
13:38make the case that Indiana has the best roster in the Big Ten with the additions
13:42of Miles Rice, Umar Bala, Luke Goody, Ken Carlisle but the best team until proven
13:48otherwise is Purdue but Ben you are a Big Ten let's just say connoisseur you
13:55can't get enough to the Big Ten in all sports and as a connoisseur you will
13:59appreciate what I'm going to say. Last year the brands in the Big Ten did not
14:04resonate throughout the college basketball season. Indiana, Michigan, Ohio
14:08State all missed the NCAA tournament. That will not happen in 2025. I think you
14:13have an excellent chance to get those three brands Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio
14:17State plus UCLA who is now in the league all in March Madness in 2025. John you
14:24know as well as I it's been nearly two and a half decades since the Big Ten as
14:29a conference won a championship in men's college basketball. As we go
14:33elsewhere on this Tuesday we showed you UConn number one Kansas in action
14:38Kentucky now a top ten team laying 21 and a half against Lipscomb. John of this
14:43board in the final minute of this segment what other game catches your eye
14:46on this Tuesday night? Cincinnati at Northern Kentucky. Cincinnati has not
14:51played a true road game this season it's a big week for the Bearcats who will
14:54also play at Georgia Tech on Saturday and keep an eye on Speedy Claxton and
14:59Hofstra picked fourth in the CAA preseason poll but in the last week
15:03Hofstra has beaten Seton Hall won a bye game at UMass and will now and try to do
15:08the same thing tonight in Tallahassee against Florida State. If there's one
15:13thing that Florida State fans don't want on a Tuesday it's simple it's the
15:17epitome of brutality. Nobody wants that John during non-conference action. John
15:23Rothstein as always thank you for your time.
