00:00At our sports banter, we were visited by our teammates from Perlas of Silangan Basketball Leagues.

00:07I'm here with Sir Christian Enzomo and Sir Nato Agbayani, the founder and co-founder of Sir Nato.

00:15Good morning, gentlemen.

00:17Good morning.

00:19Thank you for coming this morning on a Monday.

00:22On a Monday, it's a pleasure.

00:23Thank you for inviting us.

00:24But let's talk about your league.

00:27Sir Christian, what is the concept behind Perlas of Silangan Basketball League?

00:34The concept of Perlas of Silangan Basketball League is to create this platform to connect the youth or the kids

00:43and to prepare them going up if they really want to develop their passion into a career,

00:49then this is the platform they need to go to.

00:52So that was the whole concept of Perlas of Silangan Basketball League.

00:56Do you play basketball?

00:59I used to play.

01:01It's just that during my time, not so long ago, we don't have current leagues yet.

01:11So from us, we're only up to the barangay level.

01:14And after that, it's the schools.

01:17So Perlas of Silangan wants to bridge that platform wherein the kids,

01:21as young as 8 all the way to 15, 17 years old,

01:25will have the platform to showcase their skills and talents.

01:28How did you come up with this?

01:30I mean, it's very challenging to tap the LGUs, right?

01:35Correct.

01:36So what was the drive?

01:37Who helped you to reach these teams?

01:43Well, a lot of people really helped.

01:47And this is not a one-man show, a two-man show,

01:50but it's a group of people who share the same vision and the same passion.

01:53I think logistically, it's a nightmare to set up this kind of event.

01:58But with the help of people who share the vision,

02:02so we are currently on 12 regions right now, this season one,

02:06and hopefully by next season, we will cover the whole of the regions.

02:11You mentioned the vision.

02:12What is the vision of your tournament?

02:15Our vision for Perlas of Silangan Basketball League is to really be on all the regions.

02:22So what will happen come season two is we will have each of the province having qualifiers,

02:28and then each of the champions from the province will go to a regional championship,

02:32and then regional championship will go to the nationals,

02:35and then we will have an international tournament at the end of each of the season.

02:40You mentioned that you have a lot of teams in this league.

02:44What is the tournament format?

02:47So our tournament format is a single round,

02:51and we have a total of seven age categories, as young as 8 years old to 11,

02:56so that's the youngest, up to 21 years old.

02:59So our tournament format is single round,

03:02and then the top teams will go to the semis, and then to the national level.

03:07You mentioned the logistics.

03:09Where are the venues of your games?

03:12Our venues, so we started in Araneta Coliseum when we were starting,

03:18and another thing na katulong natin dito is yung mga LGUs.

03:22So most of the regions, they partner with an LGU,

03:25and the LGU really helped in setting up the venues and giving us the venues

03:30so that it's really accessible for our players and also dun sa mga manonood.

03:37Sir Nato, ano ba yung paano ba sumali dito?

03:41Is it a selection process? Is it a registration process?

03:44So what happens is we have regional partners,

03:48and then they get the teams from the local regions.

03:51They cooperate with the LGUs.

03:53Pwede siyang teams, pwedeng basketball clubs, pwedeng school-based.

03:58So they join, and the regional partners, nangkakaroon ng playoffs.

04:03Like what's happening now, that's happening everywhere.

04:06So we have practically 12 regions playing all at the same time.

04:13So simultaneously, meron mga games.

04:15So once they qualify, ano na, buon na kasi yung mga teams.

04:19Like what you're showing now is like, I think this is northern Mindanao.

04:23So we have everywhere, everywhere talaga.

04:27And then once they qualify, they do their own tryouts.

04:31Then they have their own teams.

04:33Okay, so may qualifying po pala.

04:35Ito napanggat ni Sir Christian, may from 8 years old to 11.

04:39So how do you categorize?

04:41Merong age groups.

04:42Under 11, 13, under 15, under 17, 19, and then under 21.

04:48Then we have 22 and up.

04:50That's the medyo professional.

04:52So if you notice, it's really a development league.

04:55So pangbata talaga siya.

04:57We want to really develop the talents of the young people.

05:01Well, primarily because 20% of the young kids want to play basketball.

05:08But then again, 20% ng kabataan natin have mental health issues.

05:12That's why we're trying to do this intervention, itong advocacy natin.

05:18Not just for sports, but for total, parang tagline nga namin is building champions for life.

05:24Right, wow.

05:25So it's not just the sport, it's also the mental toughness and everything else that comes with it.

05:30Ang dami pong different basketball leagues na umuusbog ngayon

05:35with the same concept, under 17, under 15, under 13.

05:39So what makes Perlas ng Silangan different from these?

05:42Kasi sa Perlas ng Silangan, we have five pillars.

05:47So ando na yung physical, mental, even spiritual health and personal advancement.

05:54So kinokonek din namin yung mga players eventually if they want to become sports athletes

06:00so they can finish school and they can become very successful in life.

06:04So yun nga yung building or nurturing champions for life

06:08which is I think the most important part of it.

06:11It's not just winning the game, madaling yun.

06:13You can win the game, you can be competitive physically

06:18but at the end of the day, we really want total parang development for the kids.

06:23And Perlas ng Silangan Sports Ventures Inc. is a multi-sport platform.

06:29PSBL or Perlas ng Silangan Basketball is just our first project.

06:34We're coming up with 3-on-3 with very professional and veteran coaches.

06:41We're coming up with hopefully by next year, volleyball.

06:45We have our national championships in January.

06:49So we'll be holding it in three cities. Sinabi na yun.

06:53So it's going to be in Iloilo and Pakolod also in Dipolong.

06:59So nabanggit mo kanina na you're trying to develop the skills and talents of these kids

07:04pero hindi natin maiwasan.

07:06One thing is, studyante pa tong mga to.

07:08Under 17, 15, 13, how do you manage?

07:11Isa ba yung liga tapos papasok sila sa skwelahan?

07:14So mostly our games are weekends, done on weekends.

07:19Sa Filipino basketball, kasi there's also what you call coach culture.

07:26Yung coach culture natin kailangan natin i-develop.

07:29They follow their coaches.

07:31So based on that, nakakapagtulungan tayo.

07:35Nabanggit mo din po na you're trying to develop yung kanilang mental health,

07:39not only the physical conditioning. How do you do that?

07:42So we have partnered with certain organizations to really address mental health issues.

07:47So we have coaches, we have life coaches joining.

07:50We have other organizations on mental health na nakakatulong

07:55during the overall conduct of the games.

08:00And then there's values formation also that's included.

08:04The commissioner sa inyo po ma-tournament ay si Coach Rodney Santos.

08:08Well, alam naman natin na isa siya sa mga legends.

08:11But what does he have for you na parang siya ang ginawa yung commissioner para sa league na ito?

08:17Well, he's the only option that we can think of prior.

08:21Because alam naman natin si Rodney is one of the top players sa PBA during his heyday.

08:27And also I think siya rin yung pinakam, well, not all,

08:32but isa siya sa talagang na-kep yung integrity niya all throughout his career.

08:37And now as a commissioner of not just Perlas but also other leagues.

08:41So plus the values that he's shown us, yun kasi yung gusto namin i-share din sa mga bata.

08:47So they look up to Rodney and see that this is how a player should be.

08:52So yun din yung nakita namin sa kanya, hence why he's the commissioner right now.

08:56Well, personally, I'm very happy to know yung vision and mission and what your advocacy is,

09:03lalo na para sa mga batang atleta natin.

09:06Now this is your chance po, if you have any message, you can also invite people

09:11where they can watch your games or follow you in the social media.

09:35It will be a Tri-City event.
