00:00Jerry Palm from CBS Sports to talk college football and a little college rack while we're at it.
00:07Hope you had a great Thanksgiving, Jerry.
00:10I want to start with this poll that's going to come out tomorrow night, you know, because frankly, I think the AP poll doesn't matter anymore.
00:20All that matters is that Tuesday night poll, right?
00:23How many more of those things are they going to put out before we know who's in the playoff?
00:27It's not just tomorrow's, is it?
00:32This is it.
00:34There'll be a final release on Sunday, which will be the final rankings and the ones from which they build the playoff bracket.
00:41So Sunday is the one that matters that.
00:45Yeah, Sunday, because the championship games are Friday and Saturday and then Sunday, they will have the final rankings for the season and then they will build the playoff bracket from that.
00:54All right, let me ask you right off the bat, is Miami out?
01:00Maybe I've got them projected as my last team in, but the team right behind them is Alabama.
01:08Alabama's got one more loss, played a tougher schedule, got some better wins and some stupid losses, too.
01:14You know, it's they've liked both of these teams.
01:17This committee has and they have let the committee down.
01:20So I think it's just it's a coin flip between which of those teams the committee likes most.
01:26But I think that, you know, barring upsets on conference championship day, one of those teams is going to get in.
01:33And right now I'm guessing Miami.
01:36Is Arizona State, you know, they have to win the Big 12 to get in at 10 and two.
01:44Yes, the Big 12 champion will be the only team from that league that gets in the field.
01:49And if they don't win, they're not 10 and two, they're 10 and three.
01:53And that's not going to be good enough for that team to get in.
01:57Someone asked me today about South Carolina after that win over Clemson.
02:03What are their chances with three losses?
02:06None.
02:07Well, not great, because their ceiling would seem to be Alabama and Ole Miss, both of which beat them.
02:15And this is a committee that has, when it can, respected head to head results, especially with teams that have the same record.
02:22So Alabama, Ole Miss both beat South Carolina.
02:26It would be unlike this committee to put South Carolina ahead of any of those either of those teams.
02:31And if they don't, South Carolina is not going to get in.
02:35Jerry, you know that I hate your school.
02:38And I just wanted to say that I have never seen Indiana beat Purdue 66 to nothing in anything, swimming, volleyball, basketball, football, golf, tennis.
02:51I don't know what it was, but I've never seen anything like that Saturday night.
02:55It was the worst loss in the entire 137 year history of Purdue's program.
03:03So no, they've never done that before, because nobody's ever done that before.
03:06The second worst loss in the history of the program was earlier this season when Notre Dame beat them 66 to 7.
03:13So the two worst losses in the history of the program came to Indiana and Notre Dame this season.
03:19And you can see why Ryan Walters got the ax, because that's just not a tenable situation.
03:25This program is completely cratered at the moment.
03:28And it's funny, I had written about Indiana trying to stay in the playoff hunt and that they needed to put up a big number on Purdue.
03:34And what I said was, there's nothing wrong with 63 to nothing that 70 to nothing wouldn't cure.
03:39And Coach Cignetti split the difference on that.
03:42So, you know, that's a big number and that's what they needed.
03:46But, man, Purdue football has got to find a coach that can turn this thing around.
03:52I mean, fortunately, in the transfer portal era, it's easier to do that quickly.
03:56But they need somebody who's an experienced head coach and does something innovative, especially offensively.
04:02So Indiana's in?
04:05I think Indiana's going to get in.
04:07Yeah, I think they're going to get maybe a double digit seed, certainly no better than nine.
04:12It depends on what happens in some of these.
04:13If there's upsets in the championship games, they can get kicked up a little bit.
04:17But they're going to get in, but they're going to go on the road for that first round game.
04:22So the big games are coming up.
04:25So who do you like in some of these?
04:27Iowa State and Arizona State.
04:29I had already mentioned the Sun Devils.
04:31That's who they're playing, the Cyclones.
04:33Yeah, I liked Iowa State at the beginning of the year and especially after they beat Iowa.
04:38They're a really good defensive team.
04:40So this will be a little bit of contrast in styles.
04:42Arizona State is going really well right now.
04:44So I'm picking the hot hand with Arizona State, but that game is kind of a toss up for me.
04:50Georgia and Texas in the SEC.
04:52How about the Longhorns?
04:54First year in the conference and playing for a title.
04:57Yeah, I think Georgia is the best team in the league and I have all year.
05:01And despite the fact that Texas is a top seed, they're one loss.
05:04Georgia really took it to them in that one loss.
05:07So I think that Georgia is good enough to win this game again.
05:11And this is the only underdog, or I should say lower seeded team in a conference championship game
05:17that I'm picking, but it's Georgia.
05:19Penn State and Oregon in the Big Ten.
05:23I think it's nice that we're getting a game that hasn't been played yet, because everybody
05:27at the top of that league didn't play each other this year.
05:30But Penn State, you know, if they can get their offense going, they have a chance to
05:34give Oregon everything they want.
05:36But if Oregon is able to stifle that offense a little bit, take away especially their running
05:40game, then I think Oregon's going to get their 30.
05:44So Penn State's going to have to be efficient offensively.
05:48Clemson and SMU.
05:49I'm surprised Clemson gets it after losing to South Carolina and Miami screwed it up.
05:55This is just unappealing to me, this game.
05:58Yeah, well Clemson, fortunately for them, did not lose a conference game to South Carolina.
06:03So it didn't really hurt them in terms of getting into this game.
06:06You know, Clemson's probably more talented, but SMU has had a fantastic season all year
06:12long.
06:13Consistent, dominant when it should be.
06:15I like SMU in this game.
06:17UNLV and Boise in the Mountain West title game.
06:21Yeah, this is probably the only team that can give Boise a game, but they have to give
06:25it to them on the blue turf.
06:27I don't know.
06:28Ashton Jentt, he's such a good player.
06:30They can ride him and they have been riding him a long way all season.
06:34I like Boise in this game.
06:36And Boise has a chance to get a bye.
06:38One of the four byes in this tournament.
06:41What about Tulane and Army in the American Athletic?
06:45Army's had a hell of a season.
06:46They have.
06:47Tulane is probably favored, and I lied because I'm actually taking Tulane, and they are the
06:54lower ranked team as well.
06:56But yeah, I like Tulane.
06:59Memphis really took it to them.
07:00I think they're going to bounce back from that.
07:02But the funny thing is, if Tulane wins this game, Memphis may end up being the highest
07:07rated team out of that conference, if any of them are ranked at all.
07:11What did you think of Danny Hurley's team's collapse in Maui and how they tumbled all
07:19the way, 23 spots to number 25 in the polls this week?
07:24How are they still ranked?
07:25Yeah.
07:26I mean, I don't pay attention to the polls ever.
07:28In college basketball, they just don't mean anything to me.
07:31But you know, UConn, I mean, that's weird.
07:34It was just weird, surreal to see that they lost those three games, went 0-3 in that tournament.
07:41And Hurley was just losing his mind, and it's funny because he's got a lot of Bob Knight
07:46in him, right?
07:47Yeah.
07:48You know, he's got the fiery temper that he can barely control and sometimes doesn't control.
07:54But he's a great coach and gets these great teams put together and wins championships.
08:01But yeah, he's got a bit of work ahead to get this team's confidence back and going
08:06the right way.
08:08There's too much talent on this team for this to be a season long malaise.
08:12Yeah, but I don't think, and I never did, that they were going to win three titles in
08:17a row.
08:18I commend them for two.
08:19That was incredible.
08:20But all those guys went to the NBA and they had Caravan standing there and they act like
08:24they're going to win another title.
08:25It's not happening.
08:26Yeah.
08:27Well, two in a row is hard even when you have most of your team back.
08:31So yeah, it's a tough job and three in a row is going to be tough.
08:35And there's really good teams out there.
08:36There's a really good competition this season.
08:40I watched a good game, the San Diego State upset of Houston the other night.
08:44Oh, I didn't.
08:45I missed that one.
08:46I'm so immersed in football right now.
08:47I'm not getting to watch a lot of basketball, but I saw that before.
08:51Houston has got, they've got three losses now too, don't they?
08:54I mean, they played a tough schedule, but San Diego State got smoked by Gonzaga at home
08:59just last week and then they turn around and beat Houston.
09:01That's a great win for them.
09:03You know why Jerry doesn't look at polls?
09:06That's because he's the king of bracketology.
09:10He has no time for these small minion polls when he's so busy getting us ready for playoffs
09:16and NCAA tournaments.
09:17Jerry, I love you.
