00:21Thousands of protesters gathered outside South Korea's National Assembly, calling for President
00:26Junsu Kiyosaki to resign on the eve of a landmark vote to impeach him over his decision to declare
00:33martial law.
00:41The World Bank has announced that it has raised close to 24 billion dollars to provide loans
00:47and grants for some of the world's poorest nations, which it can leverage to generate
00:53a record 100 billion U.S. dollars in total spending powers.
01:02Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Ana Marrero from the Telesur headquarters in Caracas,
01:06Venezuela.
01:07We'll be with the news, stay with us.
01:22In Panama City, trade union workers marched on Thursday afternoon to the National Assembly
01:27to urge lawmakers to repeal the proposed reform to the Social Security Fund.
01:33Hundreds of protesters marched from the Parque Porras to the National Assembly to oppose
01:38both the privatization of pension funds and the potential rise in the retirement age.
01:43As a result, near-business public transport and services faced some disruptions while
01:50the police kept guard along the marchers.
01:52However, reports showcase a peaceful rally in which workers stood up for their labor
01:58rights.
01:59Let's listen to members of the Cunecil Union about the matter.
02:10We are demanding that lawmakers from the Legislative Assembly reject the draft Bill 163 as the
02:15government is willing to lower pensions.
02:18And we cannot allow so.
02:19And thus, our current proposal, what we are proposing is a return to the solidarity system.
02:25This means we do not accept miserable pensions, pensions that will harm the interests of workers
02:30and the Panamanian people.
02:36Bolivia enters the iron and steel era with over 94% progress in the construction of the
02:42Ayala Mutun Steel Plant in Santa Cruz.
02:45According to the project, the plant is expected to produce 3,500 tons in January 2025 and
02:51an average of 200,000 tons a year for the domestic market.
02:56With these figures, the nation will be able to sustain at least 50% of its steel imports.
03:02The plant is also expected to have an important social impact on the region as it is estimated
03:07to generate 700 direct and close to 2,000 indirect jobs.
03:18The Paraguayan government continues pursuing its aggressive policies towards China, charging
03:24the Chinese executive of cyber espionage and expelling a Chinese diplomat from its national
03:30territory.
03:31Paraguay recognizes Taiwan as an independent state, violating Taiwan-China's principles.
03:36Subsequently, the Paraguayan executive does not hold diplomatic relations with China.
03:40In this context, the U.S. Embassy in Paraguay and the Ministry of Information and Communication
03:46Technologies of that nation accuse China of launching cyber espionage networks to allegedly
03:52infiltrate Paraguayan government systems.
03:55Moreover, the authorities suspended a visa to a Chinese diplomat, forcing him to depart
03:59the country in less than 24 hours.
04:02In response, the spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry issued some statements.
04:11The allegations and claims made by the corresponding departments of the Paraguayan side against
04:16the relevant members of the Chinese delegation are completely unreasonable and groundless,
04:21and they seriously violate international practices.
04:25China firmly opposes it.
04:31President Obama and Vice President Rodríguez met in Beijing with the president of China
04:35National Petroleum Corporation during the second day of her official visit to the Asian
04:39nation.
04:40During the meeting, both parties followed up on the joint energy cooperation as well
04:44last year's threatening of strategic alliances between Caracas and Beijing.
04:48They also highlighted bilateral exchange, which has increased by 55 percent in the last
04:5310 months, exceeding last year's figures.
04:56Rodríguez and the Chinese entrepreneur also reviewed a long-standing comprehensive chain
05:01of cooperation in the energy industry, which encompasses production investments such as
05:07technology and engineering.
05:09Previously, the high Venezuelan official visited Beijing Communist Party museum, where she
05:18had the possibility to appreciate the history and struggle of the Chinese people aligned
05:23with the 20th century through a state-of-the-art technology exhibition.
05:28The museum includes more than 2,000 images and around 4,000 relics that show the transformation
05:35of China in the last 100 years.
05:38On behalf of the Venezuelan people and its president, Rodríguez prized the role of the
05:43Chinese Communist Party as a benchmark of socialism and in defense of freedom and sovereignty
05:50of the peoples of the world.

06:21Welcome back to From the South.
06:26Thousands of protesters gathered outside South Korea's National Assembly calling for President
06:31Jun Suk-il to resign on the eve of a landmark vote to impeach him over his decision to declare
06:37martial law.
06:38At least 15,000 unannounced protesters rallied in Seoul's Joil district holding candles and
06:44signs that read, Jun Suk-il should resign for crimes of insurrection while calling for
06:51his arrest.
06:52In this context, police expect 200,000 people to attend any of Jun's demonstrations on Saturday
06:59ahead of the impeachment vote, which needs a two-third majority.
07:03A fresh opening poll released Friday put back in for a 63-year-old president who has launched
07:10from crisis to crisis since taking office in 2022 at a record low of 13 percent.
07:22Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the presidential elections
07:26with the government now due to the set of days for a new vote.
07:30The court's decision comes after the declassified intelligence documents suggest that the first
07:35round's winner, Ducaline Giorgescu, benefited from a mass influenza operation from abroad
07:42that interfered with the election's results.
07:44However, some international analysts affirm that the main reason for the annulment was
07:49that the winning candidate did not respond to NATO's interests.
07:53Hours after the court's decision, Giorgescu told a local TV channel that the country's
07:58democracy was under attack as described by the court verdict as a formalized coup d'etat.
08:06The Ghanaians will cast their votes on Saturday's general elections as the West African country
08:13faces its worst economic situation in decades.
08:16Over 18.7 million eligible voters are expected to go to the polls to choose from 13 presidential
08:24candidates and 276 legislators.
08:27incumbent president Mr. Mahamudu Bawimaya of the Patriotic Party is facing former president
08:35John Dramani Mahama, who is running for the opposition National Democratic Congress.
08:41To win the presidency, a candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the total votes.
08:46Otherwise, a run-off election will be held for the two highest-placing candidates.
08:51According to the opinion polls, Mahama is expected to emerge as the election's winner.
08:56Let me say, J.M., who is John Dramani Mahama, said when he comes to power, everything is
09:08going to be better.
09:09So I'm pleading with Ghanaians, please vote for John Dramani Mahama to reset Ghana and
09:15then for a better change.
09:21Bawimaya coming to the game is a game-changer, is a problem-solver.
09:27He has brought good ideas that impact well on the livelihood of every Ghanaian.
09:51Moving on, thousands of citizens were killed on Friday morning as a result of the Israeli
09:58occupation forces shielding a residential area in the Beirut, a city near the Kamel
10:03Aran Hospital in northern Gaza.
10:05A large number of people are still missing under the rubble of houses in Beirut, as world
10:10health organizations slammed the attack.
10:12Tel Aviv also bombed a school for displaced people in the town of Jabalia.
10:17Two citizens were killed as a result of the shielding by the occupation forces on a Rafi
10:22school, which shelters displaced people in the Jabalia city.
10:25And three citizens were killed as a result of an airstrike in the Qubit al-Aras, north
10:32of Rafa city.
10:33Likewise, there are dead and wounded bodies on the streets and no one can reach them,
10:38preventing ambulances and medical teams from approaching the site.
10:47The foreign minister of Iran, Abbas Aranshi, will join a meeting in Baghdad with his counterpart
10:53from Syria and Iraq to address Syria's offensive on Syria.
10:57In this regard, the Iranian ambassador in Iraq underscored that the encounter seeks
11:03higher levels of coordination and cooperation among the three countries regarding the scope
11:08of the crisis in the Middle Eastern country.
11:11A few days after the resurgence of terrorist groups in Idlib and Aleppo, the Iranian minister
11:16is making a general tour, which first stopped over was Damascus, where he met with Syrian
11:21President Bashar al-Assad, pledging full support to Syria to fight off terrorism.
11:26Likewise, the foreign minister warned that terrorist groups overnight offensive on northwest
11:31Syria could pose a more serious security threat to neighboring countries.
11:41And Iran announced on Friday that it has successfully launched a satellite-carrying rocket into
11:46space in tensions with the West.
11:48After a series of unsuccessful tries, the Persian nation has confirmed that this time
11:54the launch went as planned.
11:56And abroad, the rocket were two research systems which could enable Tehran to geosynchronize
12:03the orbit of its satellites.
12:05The West has accused Iran of a space program of being amended to develop ballistic missiles.
12:11On the other hand, the UN has insisted that Iran's satellite launches violate a UN Security
12:18Council resolution, urging it to not carry out any activity involving missiles capable
12:24of carrying nuclear warheads.
12:26However, Tehran has always maintained that its nuclear and space programs are entirely
12:31aimed at peaceful purposes.
12:55Welcome back.
13:09The World Bank has announced that it has raised close to US$24 billion to provide loans
13:15and grants for some of the world's poorest nations, which it can leverage to generate
13:21around US$100 billion in total spending power.
13:26Donor countries pledged US$23.7 billion to replenish the bank's conceptual lending arm,
13:34known as the International Development Association, IDAID, as a loan increase from the approximately
13:41US$23.5 billion pledged during the last round of fundraising three years ago.
13:49World Bank President Ban Ki-moon said in a statement that this fund will be deployed
13:57to support the 78 countries that need it most.
14:01He added that it will help provide resources to invest in health, education, infrastructure
14:06and climate resilience, as well as help stabilize economies and create jobs.
14:18In this context, Senior Managing Director of the World Bank Axel van Troosenburg thanked
14:25all donors for their unwavering commitment to helping countries in need at the IDAID
14:3121 replacement meeting in Seoul, South Korea.
14:37The months of negotiations, partnerships, support from the borrowers and unwavering
14:44commitment from our donors, we are proud to announce that the 21st replenishment of
14:49IDAID has raised almost US$24 billion or US$23.7 billion, to be more precise, in donor contributions.
14:59We enormously appreciate these donor contributions against a big backdrop of fiscal challenges
15:07and depreciations.
15:09A huge thank you.
15:13The World Bank Senior Managing Director also stated that these funds investments are about
15:17touching lives and creating better futures.
15:21We acknowledge the efforts of individual donors to mobilize scarce fiscal resources for IDAID
15:28and their continued commitment to support the countries who need it most.
15:34And thanks to the IDAID unique leveraging model, this US$23.7 billion will generate
15:41a total of US$100 billion in financing, the largest replenishment in IDAID history.
15:49What does this mean?
15:50The US$100 billion allows us to invest in health, education, infrastructure and climate
15:57resilience.
15:58It will help stabilize economies, create jobs and build the foundation for a better future.
16:06The World Bank will support the 78 countries that need it most, giving them the tools to
16:11navigate an uncertain world and unlock their full potential.
16:17These investments are about touching lives and creating better futures.
16:24The International Development Association is the World Bank's fund for 78 low-income
16:29countries, by far their largest source of multilateral development finance.
16:35It provides constitutional financing for projects that boost economic growth, build resilience
16:40and improve people's lives across these countries, with more than two-thirds of the financing
16:46going to lower-income countries in Africa.
16:49Since 1960, IDAID has provided US$533 billion to 115 countries, the 78 countries currently
17:01include 3 in Sub-Saharan Africa, 14 in East Asia and Pacific, 6 in South Asia, 4 in Europe
17:10and Central Asia, 8 in Latin America and Caribbean, and 3 in Middle East and North Africa.
17:21Hundreds of people demonstrated in Chad on Friday to demand that we withdraw all of the
17:25French troops from the country a week after the Central African country ended military
17:29recruitment with its former colonizer.
17:32In the Central, in Yemen, hundreds of people gathered in front of the French Embassy, some
17:37shanties and other Korean banners, rejecting the presence of French troops in the nation.
17:43The protests erupted from the statement issued by the Chadian government last week, in which
17:49it decided to add a defense cooperation agreement with France in order to redefine its strategic
17:55partnership.
17:56However, France has maintained about 1,000 troops in Chad, and the statement did not
18:01specify when they will leave.
18:03In this regard, protests are expected to continue until the French government takes action on
18:07the matter.
18:14The International Medical and Humanitarian Organization, Dr. Wittal Borders, has warned
18:19that a cholera outbreak in South Sudan is rapidly escalating, more than a month after
18:23the first suspected case was detected.
18:26Dr. Wittal Borders said on Friday that a total of 737 cholera cases were reported in Malakal,
18:34the capital of South Sudan's Upper Nile state.
18:39The organization announced that its teams had set up a 100-bed cholera treatment center
18:46near Malakal Town Hospital, but significant gaps remain, particularly in water and sanitization.
18:54As of December 3rd, South Sudan had reported 1,526 suspects and confirmed cholera cases.
19:03Cholera is an acute form of diarrhea that is treatable with antibiotics and hydration,
19:09but can kill within hours if left untreated.
19:16In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, health officials have raised alarms over an unidentified
19:23flu-like illness that has killed at least 71 people in the southern Baku province.
19:29The illness has affected approximately 380 people, nearly half of whom are children under
19:36the age of five.
19:40The latest reports include fever, headache, cough and anemia, and dissents.
19:46Congolese Minister of Public Health, Roger Dekamba, emphasized that it is still too early
19:52to determine the cause of transmission methods of the disease.
19:56There were around 380 cases, almost half of which were children under the age of 5, according
20:06to the minister.
20:09We are really on maximum alert.
20:11We need to confirm through the diagnostics the suspicions around whether it is a respiratory
20:17infection.
20:19We must note also that there was a large typhoid epidemic two years ago, and that the malnutrition
20:28rates in the health zone are at around 40 percent.
20:32These are vulnerable factors.
