00:00In Venezuela, Caracas hosts activities prior to the summit for the 20th anniversary of
00:20the ALBA-TCP.
00:21I reached Foreign Minister Michael Martin announced on Wednesday that his government
00:29will join South Africa in its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
00:39And the World Health Organization has published a report on malaria, highlighting a sharp
00:44increase in cases and deaths from the disease globally.
00:54Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Ana Marrero from the Telesur headquarters
00:58in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:59We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:15In Venezuela, Caracas will host the 24th Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples
01:21of America's People's Trade Treaty.
01:23On Wednesday, delegations from ALBA member countries prepared to hold a political and
01:28social forum.
01:29During the meeting, it is expected that high-level leaders and political actors will seek to
01:34become familiar with the meeting in order to organize the agenda with the head of state
01:39to take place this Friday.
01:41According to the official agenda of ALBA-TCP, this Thursday the Council of Social Movements
01:48will agree on what part of the recommendations to be discussed during the summit.
01:55The entire infrastructure of the Gaza Strip has been destroyed and demolished and we will
02:03discuss again on this meeting the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip after the ending of this
02:11genocide.
02:12The role of ALBA-TCP will be essential and will be very important in reconstruction,
02:19reconstructing the Gaza Strip after the ending of war, as well as the political support.
02:26We need the political support and we need the political renounce of the crimes against
02:35our people.
02:36This Wednesday is the first activity.
02:38Tomorrow, the 20th anniversary of ALBA-TCP began in Caracas, ahead of the 24th ALBA Summit
02:43to take place on December 14th.
02:46Our correspondent in Venezuela, Belén de los Santos, has the details.
02:51The ALBA youth has gathered on Wednesday in Caracas to recreate a model of the political
02:56council of ALBA-TCP.
02:59In this way, the future generations of ALBA countries continue to foster practices of
03:04cooperation envisioned by Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro 20 years ago at the creation
03:10of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our Americas.
03:15For me, it is an honor to be here today in this model of ALBA-TCP, representing a country
03:20as important as the Republic of Cuba.
03:23It has been a very enriching experience.
03:25I have learned a great deal.
03:27This exchange of knowledge with my colleagues, with some experts such as Professor Arreaza,
03:31has been a truly unforgettable experience.
03:34It is not my first time in a model within all these international organizations, but
03:38it is the first time in an ALBA model, and I am proud that many of my university classmates
03:43and young people are pioneers in something as important as youth diplomacy.
03:49The young men and women recreating the ALBA political council addressed all key issues
03:55affecting the region.
03:56The need to reject and overcome unilateral sanctions through cooperation was one of the
04:01main topics.
04:03Another highlight of the event was the participation of Palestine as a represented state and the
04:08unanimous stance of solidarity from the ALBA youth with the Palestinian people.
04:15As a young person and also, God willing, as a future internationalist, I feel that there
04:20is no better space than the one that is being developed today in this ALBA model to generate
04:26another capacity, another vision for us as youth, because we constantly receive different
04:32types of information, not even information, but rather the disinformation of the normalization
04:39of what is happening, the justification of a genocide that has no justification whatsoever.
04:47They are the future.
04:48They are the future.
04:49That's why we are witnessing today a meeting, a gathering of the youth from ALBA-TCEP country.
04:55This sends a clear message that even the youth are supporting, are with the Palestinian
05:01rights.
05:02We are asking for our rights.
05:04We are asking for justice.
05:07That's why those young men and women are sending a clear message that Palestine is not alone.
05:13Palestine counts on their support and their solidarity.
05:17At the end of the model, the Secretary General of ALBA-TCEP, Jorge Arreaza, addressed the
05:22participants and highlighted the significance of such an event in terms of educating the
05:27young generations of ALBA militants.
05:30These youngsters, Venezuelan youngsters of several universities and several political
05:35parties have done a great job because they could interpret perfectly the principles of
05:41ALBA, solidarity, cooperation, complementarity, and they were able to express it in a very
05:51good way.
05:52And I believe that this is the first one of thousands of models that we have to do, not
05:57only in Venezuela but in all the countries of ALBA-TCEP, and that this is a way of educating
06:04our youngsters.
06:06Solidarity, cooperation and complementarity.
06:11This is how the Bolivarian youth prepares for the 20th anniversary of the creation of
06:16the ALBA-TCEP, in an exercise that shapes the internationalists of tomorrow for the
06:21construction of a fairer world order.
06:25Belén de los Santos, Caracas, Venezuela.
06:31In Argentina, social movements begin a national day of struggle against hunger and to denounce
06:36President Javier Melendez's budget cuts to sub-kitchens.
06:40Major unions and the people's economy warned about a sharp increase in poverty during the
06:46government of Liberated Advance as a result of the critical situation regarding dismissals
06:51of labor rights and basic constitutional guarantees.
06:55The union also warned that as a consequence of Melendez's neoliberal policies, millions
06:59of families will not have the possibility of having a dinner on their tables during
07:04the Christmas holidays.
07:05In this sense, they demand to public and private sectors an urgent response to face this
07:10Christmas with dignity.
07:17Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is progressing well after undergoing
07:22an emergency surgery on Tuesday after suffering from an intracranial hemorrhage.
07:29The information was provided by the Syrian Lebanese hospital in Sao Paulo on Wednesday,
07:34which reported that a 79-year-old president is alert and engaged in conversing and has
07:41spent the night well.
07:43Lula has taken from Brasilia to the Sao Paulo hospital on Monday after complaining of a
07:49headache which an MRI scan determined to be an intracranial hemorrhage.
07:56He is expected to be released next week.
07:58And the threats against the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court continue one month after it
08:08was the target of a bomb attack.
08:11Almost a month after the terrorist actions carried out by Francisco Wanderlei Luiz, the
08:17court has threatened its protection measures after receiving letters of intimidation and
08:22packaging with human remains.
08:24One of the measures is forcing the ID check of all people with access to the Supreme Court's
08:30parking lot as well as the inside of their vehicles.
08:34Wanderlei Luiz tried to attack the nation's Supreme Court in Brasília last November 13
08:41before he was killed on the site by apparently detonating the explosive he was carrying.

09:18Welcome back to From the South.
09:38Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin announced on Wednesday that his government will join
09:42South Africa in its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
09:46The Irish official said that Palestine has been collectively punished due to the Israeli
09:52military actions in Gaza, which has killed over 4,000 people and displaced millions of
09:57civilians.
09:58Martin stressed that Ireland's decision shows the consistency of its approach in interpreting
10:05and applying the UN conviction on genocide.
10:08On November 29, 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel at the International
10:15Court of Justice for its involvement in acts of genocide against civilians in the Gaza
10:19Strip in violation of the 1949 UN Conviction on the Prevention of Genocide.
10:30In this regard, the Palestinian Foreign Minister welcomed the announcement by Ireland to intervene
10:36in the case concerning the implementation of the Conviction on the Prevention and Punishment
10:42of the Crimes of Genocide in the Gaza Strip brought by South Africa against Israel.
10:47He also noted that the decision expressed Ireland's firm commitment to justice and the
10:52international rule of law and underscores the deep solidarity and historic friendship
10:57between the two countries.
10:58Furthermore, he called on all state parties to the agreement to join an announcement and
11:05announce active participation in the proceedings before the tribunal.
11:14The United Nations appealed to the international community to meet the humanitarian needs of
11:19the population in the occupied Palestinian territory as a result of the Israeli genocide
11:24against the country.
11:25The multinational body said that at least $6.6 billion are needed to meet the humanitarian
11:32needs of about 3.3 million people in the Gaza Strip and in the occupied West Bank,
11:38including East Jerusalem.
11:39On the other hand, the United Nations Office for the Humanitarian Affairs, OSHA, informed
11:45that the speed and scale of the killings and destructions and the scope of the operational
11:51restrictions in the Gaza Strip are unlike anything the organization has witnessed in
11:56the past.
11:57The UN body added that the violence continues to escalate in the West Bank and there is
12:01a great risk that the situation will worsen.
12:09The Israeli regime issued new unlawful arrest warrants against 36 Palestinian nationals.
12:15The Palestinian Prisoner Society and the Commission of the Chinese Affairs released a joint communique
12:21providing the names of those having received the judicial orders without being charged
12:27or taken to trial.
12:28Indeed, Israeli police allowed the detention of Palestinians without charging them for
12:34renewable periods that usually range from three to six months.
12:44Sudanese armed forces hit a district of northern Darfur state claiming over 100 lives in Sudan.
12:52Emergency agencies issued briefings to provide details in the incident.
12:55They state that the Sudanese armed forces dropped bombs on a market in the Kabia area.
13:01The entities described the incursion as an overnight massacre in the morning, which not
13:07only inhaled over 100 people but also left hundreds injured, including women and children.
13:15This airstrike is part of an intense campaign by the Lebanese armed forces against the rebel
13:19paramilitary rapid support forces.
13:49Welcome back.
13:59The World Health Organization has published a report on malaria highlighting a sharp increase
14:04in cases and deaths from the disease globally.
14:07According to the organization, there were 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths from
14:17the disease worldwide in 2023, some 11 million more cases than in 2022 and about the same
14:23number of deaths.
14:24Approximately 95 percent of those deaths occurred in Africa, where many people at risk continue
14:30to lack access to disease prevention, detection and treatment services.
14:34In this sense, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Pakistan, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the
14:39Congo accounted for most of the increase in cases, with Ethiopia alone reporting an
14:47additional 4.5 million cases.
14:55The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes, UNODC, warned that cases of human trafficking
15:01increased by 25 percent after the decrease reported during COVID-19.
15:07The organization explained in a report that victims of these crimes increased by 47 percent
15:13between 2019 and 2022, while child victims rose 31 percent in 2022 compared to 2019.
15:21The report considers alarming the increase of exploited children and forced labor cases
15:26in the context of vulnerabilities resulting from poverty, conflicts and climate crisis.
15:32UNODC Executive Director Dao Wadawali stressed that criminal justice response must be intensified
15:41to hold those at the top of the criminal chain accountable.
15:50In the U.S., a ferocious wildfire swept through Malibu, Los Angeles City on Tuesday, destroying
15:57at least seven homes in California and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people.
16:02Several properties were destroyed by the blaze fed by powerful winds and thinned by dry brush.
16:09In this sense, firefighters were unable to get a foothold in the steppe canyons surrounding Los
16:16Angeles, where the massive flames were devouring hillsides, filling them with choking smoke.
16:25On the other hand, law enforcement officers ordered thousands of people to leave their
16:30homes if conditions worsened. Wildfires featured live in California and other parts of the western
16:36U.S. are often exacerbated at this time of year by the Santa Ana winds, which blow dry the desert
16:45from the interior.
16:51British farmers demonstrated with their tractors in front of Parliament on Wednesday to protest
16:56against controversial inherent tax on certain farms. British farmers rallied in front of
17:02Parliament with billboards with phrases like, done by the hand that feeds you as tractors outside,
17:09with ministers where they be pinning their horns. Until now, British farms could benefit from an
17:17exception from inherent tax on their assets and property and made sure they signaled to facilitate
17:25the transfer of farms to continue their work. But the government announced on October 30 that
17:30this exception would cease to apply to farms worth more than $1.27 million as of April 2026.
17:55We don't have the money just to pay inheritance tax on our farms. We'd have to sell a big part of
18:01the business, like maybe all of the animals or all of the tractors in order to pay the bill
18:05and then we won't simply have a business left.
18:08It's targeting the wrong people, this tax. It's not targeting the huge investments companies buying land.
18:16That's where it's targeted, but it's actually hitting the middle-sized farms, the very small ones,
18:23the small holdings. You could argue they're not actually farming. They're not actually
18:27contributing to the food industry. They may have some horses and a nice lifestyle.
18:32The guys in the middle are being affected and they are the ones producing food, ultimately.
18:44In France, thousands of tractors have blown up the centre of Dijon city on Wednesday while
18:49farmers don manures and tars on the streets in protest against the U.N. Mercosur agreement.
18:56Farmers without wealth and let's not import what is forbidden in France were the slogans
19:02on the poster stuck on the radiator grills of Tractors Park, blocking the regional council
19:10of Bourgogne-Frenchcomte. In the meantime, the police are trying to
19:17alleviate the chaos while preventing the demonstrators from accessing the prefecture of the city.
19:29On Wednesday, the multinational technology company Meta experienced a major global outage
19:34with thousands of users reporting malfunctions on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp.
19:40The company's systems appear to have suffered a major technical issue at around 10 a.m pacific time.
19:47As a result, multiple Meta services are experiencing a widespread outage affecting users
19:52from all over the world. According to the reports, users of the apps were not able to access their
19:59messages or experience connectivity problems. In this regard, the cases of the outage are still
20:05unknown. However, the company recovered quickly and most of its apps are currently running normally
20:11although some still report problems. This is not the first time something like this has happened
20:16as the company's CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously apologized
20:20after all social networks went down for nearly six hours in October 2021.
