00:00For the Bayou Bengals, that means Garrett Nussmeyer coming back to Baton Rouge.
00:09It was a disappointing season for LSU when all was said and done.
00:13Just eight wins this year for Brian Kelly and those Tigers in year number three.
00:19However, when you look at things for Garrett Nussmeyer to build on the production of this
00:24past season, moving forward to 2025, how optimistic should those Tigers fans be down
00:30in the Bayou?
00:31Well, I'm optimistic and Tiger fans should be optimistic because they have a veteran
00:35quarterback coming back and understands the scheme now.
00:38In terms of the productivity last year in critical games, especially on the road in
00:43Texas A&M, Garrett Nussmeyer imploded.
00:45He did as well against Alabama in another critical matchup, but earlier in the year
00:50he was very effective.
00:52The fact that they have surrounded him with talent, Lacey, Aaron Anderson is there.
00:57He loses Mason Taylor most likely to the NFL draft.
01:00They did get Barry M. Brown that comes over from Kentucky most likely will transfer in.
01:05That'll be an added benefit.
01:07And again, a lot of LSU people that I talk to that are close to the program have made
01:12the correlation.
01:13Jaden Daniels from year one in Baton Rouge to year two, significantly improved.
01:18Joe Burrow, year one to year two, significantly improved.
01:22So the sky's the limit.
01:23He has the intangibles.
01:25The one thing he has to cut down on, Kev, is throwing and forcing the balls into coverage,
01:30much like Brett Favre in the early part of his career at Southern Miss.
01:33Yeah, I mean, look, he didn't have a Malik Nabors this year, obviously.
01:38Kyron Lacey was good, but they didn't have that type of player.
01:41I mean, Brian Thomas Jr. obviously also has had an incredible year so far with Jacksonville
01:45early.
01:46Getting Nussmeier back is awesome.
01:49There were certainly some, just because of the way the quarterback class looks to be
01:52for the draft, who were in on Nussmeier.
01:54So it's certainly a big get for LSU.
01:57I think the worry is, just if we're doing the kind of the, oh, it's this guy, a Heisman
02:02contender.
02:03I look at the early schedule outlook for LSU, and there are road trips to Ole Miss, Alabama,
02:09and Clemson on that schedule.
02:11That's a little bit concerning, I think, a little bit there for them.
02:15No, and I'll just add, it's more concerning the defensive talent that has entered the
02:19portal for the LSU Tigers.
02:21They need to really reload and restart.
02:24Perkins left, they lost another edge rusher, they lost a couple of defensive backs already.
02:29I mean, the attrition on the defensive side of the ball, if they can reload on that side,
02:33they'll be just fine.
02:34And still, when all was said and done, the defense was below standard for a Brian Kelly-led
02:39team.
02:40Blake Baker, in his first year with the Bayou Bengals, slightly underwhelming for being
02:45the highest-paid assistant in the sport.
02:48First five SEC games for Nussmeier this past year, eight touchdowns to eight interceptions.
02:55Final three, five touchdowns, did not throw a pick, was sacked seven times in a loss against
03:00Florida.
03:01So that's big news for the quarterback position for LSU.
03:06If I were to ask you quickly, win total for the Bayou Bengals in 2025, what do you think
03:11that number looks like entering next season?
03:13Eight?
03:15I mean, just ballparking the schedule, I don't think, I don't know, they'd have to have a
03:19very bad offseason to have an LSU 7.5.
03:23Some books don't like to hang flat numbers, though, so you may get 8.5, a lot of plus
03:28money to be over.
03:29I would say 8.5, 9.5 tops.
03:31No shots, 9.5, no shot.
03:34There was a time this year where we discussed in the offseason, could LSU make a run in
03:38year number three to that SEC championship game?
03:42They had one of the easier dockets to start the season, yeah.
03:45But the fact that they did not, it is damning.
03:47When you go back and look at ultimately how it played out, yes, they lost that opening
03:51game to USC, but they got that win against Ole Miss, which was a beautiful scheduled
03:55spot for them, and then proceeded to lose three games in a row, where, okay, you look
04:00back, they lose to A&M, all right, not that great, all things considered there, they were
04:04up early in that football game, off a bye, at home, so hard to beat BK, smashed by Alabama,
04:11and then like, quit on the year, lost level to Florida, not an, a very uninspiring year
04:17from the Tigers.
04:18I would agree.
04:19The optimism that entered last season in Baton Rouge, not necessarily the one that will carry
04:22over into this offseason, having Garrett Nussmeier back is a big help.
