00:00In Italy, in 2024, about 390,000 new tumor diagnoses were estimated, numbers substantially
00:10stable compared to 2022-2023. This is the photo taken at the new census, the numbers
00:16of cancer in Italy in 2024, of the Italian Association for Medical Oncology, IOM, presented
00:21in Rome at the Palazzo Baldassini.
00:23Despite our reluctance and our fear of giving positive news, today we have positive news.
00:30The estimated incidence of cancer, we think more and more accurately, thanks to the improvement
00:36of the coverage of tumor records, which now with Airtom cover 80% of the regional territory,
00:43the incidence has not increased compared to the last quarter. This is good news.
00:48Another good news is that the alarm spread in international media about the possibility
00:54that there is a phenomenon, cancer in young people out of control, is not confirmed in
00:59Italy, because we have a reduction of mortality in those who get sick before the age of 50.
01:05The positive numbers we have commented on for the numbers of cancer in 2024 must be
01:09an incentive to do even better, in the sense that we are happy that the incidence has
01:14been substantially stabilized, we are happy that we even document an improvement of mortality
01:19in young people thanks to the progress of prevention and therapies, but this must also be an incentive
01:24to do better, so not to give up on prevention, not to give up on the efficiency of screenings,
01:29not to give up on research and on the improvement of the therapeutic offer for our patients.
01:3450% of citizens who today have a neoplasia are destined to definitively overcome the disease.
01:39Not only does mortality decrease in the range between 20 and 49 years for neoplasia in both
01:44sexes, but more attention is paid to lifestyles, under the accusation of alcohol, smoking, obesity
01:49and sedentary lifestyle. Screening coverage improves, but there are still regional differences.
01:54Fewer cases than expected, which presumably derives from some positive effects, such as
02:01the reduction of large intestine tumors, thanks also to the screening of the rectum, the continuation
02:07of a favorable progress for the stomach and lung, and perhaps also a reduction in the intensity
02:12of the PSA dosage, which may be better in the younger age range, between 55 and 69 years,
02:18and less in the very elderly. So, a series of favorable elements, which obviously do not tell us
02:24that we must lower our guard on prevention and on the attempt to reduce the incidence
02:30of these important diseases.
