George Bennett on Walsall transfer latest
Transcript
00:00Good afternoon. I spoke to Matt Sadler earlier today in transfers, as has been the case for much of this month, was very much on the agenda and especially the potential arrival of another centre forward.
00:15And when I posed that question to Matt Sadler on Tuesday night, he was very tight lipped, not giving very much away in terms of whether he's going to further bolster those attacking ranks.
00:28But for Walsall, it's been two games now without a goal.
00:32It may be the leading goal scorers in the division, but it's a concern in the wake of Jamil Matt missing pretty much the last two games with a hamstring injury and some supporters questioning whether they lack a focal point without the 35-year-old leading the line.
00:48Of course, in the wake of Nathan Lowe's recall from Stoke City, 15 league goals for the Sadlers during his loan, 18 in all competitions, still the leading goal scorer in League Two, despite the fact that he was recalled over a fortnight ago.
01:04And Sadler responded with the fact that he was pleased with the arrivals of Nathan Isinwe, the right wing back on loan from Charlton Athletic and Ethan Wheatley's capture on loan from Manchester United.
01:16The 19-year-old striker arrived on Saturday morning last week, made his debut from the bench in the 3-0 defeat at Bradford City and then was handed his full debut in the 2-0 defeat at Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night.
01:30It's difficult to really gauge a great deal from what was his first senior start. Sadler confident that his strengths will shine through and that he's a player who's willing to learn, talks about his electrifying pace and that he's got a lot to bring to the table at Walsall.
01:48But yeah, in terms of extra possible additions before the window slams shut on Monday, he said that Walsall are active, there's been frustrations, there's been knockbacks and waiting for green lights and things to drop.
02:00But he also said that, you know, if on Monday night there is no new faces through the door, that he's happy with what he's got at his disposal. And I posed the question to him that, you know, at the start of this month, himself and CEO Ben Sadler had said that they want to finish the window as strong or if not stronger than they entered the month.
02:25And Sadler feels that they have achieved that and, you know, says for one second he won't be taking for granted the players that he already has in his squad and that will run through brick walls for him because, you know, it's worth remembering the fact that prior to what's been two very disappointing defeats on the road, Walsall had gone a club record nine matches, a nine match winning streak and 60 matches without defeat in the league prior to that.
02:54So, you know, basically saying that he's not hitting the panic button for any second. But yeah, the kind of the bottom line is that he said Walsall are active, but he won't be doing anything which he feels is the wrong thing to do.
