00:00So it's finished here at St James Park, Newcastle United 1, Fulham 2 and a bitterly disappointing
00:05afternoon for Eddie Howe's side. They came into this game obviously with a big weekend
00:11score with Arsenal in the Carabao Cup and then Birmingham City in the FA Cup to come
00:16next weekend and you'd hope that they would get some confidence from a good display here
00:19and three points but that didn't happen. Fulham ran 0-2 on winners after overturning a 1-0
00:25deficit at half-time and they were better than Newcastle. That's just pretty simple,
00:30Fulham weren't the better team and deserved to win. Newcastle made them the better team
00:33by not being at their very best. They had a lacklustre second half and it was really
00:38disappointing. It goes back to games like you saw against West Ham, Brighton, Bournemouth
00:43earlier this year, their home games, it's another disappointing performance that added
00:49to that. It's another one where you think Newcastle was taking a couple of steps forward,
00:54obviously a brilliant run recently, ended by the Bournemouth win. Then they go over
00:59Southampton last week and win and you think can they build up a little bit of momentum
01:02and then Fulham come to town and do a job on them unfortunately. The first half, Newcastle
01:07started alright I think. It was pretty even, although they did get the goal through Jacob
01:12Murphy, it was a good goal from Jacob Murphy. Fair Gordon took the ball down brilliantly,
01:16sprinted pretty much a full half of pitch, squared it across, it took a knick-off defender
01:22like Jacob Murphy, gambled that it was his fault and it did fall to him and he slammed
01:26home and Newcastle went into the break 1-0 up. As I've said numerous times, you think
01:31can they go in the second half, can they make that count. It is a hard one to dissect straight
01:40after the game because at that point you do think maybe they were on top and maybe a draw
01:44would have been the correct result at half-time but after the second half there was no doubt
01:47Fulham deserved their two goals. I don't know what happened at half-time, whether Newcastle
01:51thought the game had won or they just took the foot off the gas and left Fulham back
01:55into it. They deserved an equaliser, Jimenez, it was a little bit of a mistake, the ball
02:00got played through and Jimenez scores. Jimenez likes a goal against Newcastle, he does well.
02:04You had to step back and then again ask Newcastle to react. They had a couple of chances, Thirteeno
02:10had an opportunity, he went through. They had a couple of other shots, Sandro Tonali
02:14hit the bar from 30 yards although I don't know whether that would have been ruled out
02:18because of offside in the build-up but that was a hell of a shot and then Isak hit the
02:22bar again with a curling effort but Fulham then took the lead for Rodrigo Menezes. It
02:27was poor defending from a free-kick. I think it was debate whether the free-kick should
02:31have been given. I think Anthony Gordon was fouled and he was fouled in the build-up,
02:34that was poor. Chris Cavanagh had a really poor game today. I obviously don't want to
02:37go all Arsenal and blame the referee for this defeat but it was a poor game from him. Fulham
02:44score, as said, Rodrigo Menezes from the free-kick. He just wasn't picked up, I don't know who
02:47was meant to mark him, I haven't seen it again but he just seemed very free at the
02:51near post to flick the free-kick, passed to Brevka and that was it. 2-1 and Newcastle
02:55didn't really look like they'd come back. Their substitutes didn't work, whatever Eddie
02:58Howe tried didn't work. Joe Willock was brought on, he was on the first substitutes along
03:02with Kieran Trippier, they replaced Livermanto and Joe Litton at that point, Joe Litton had
03:07been through the walls and picked up a good game so it wasn't really surprising Joe Willock
03:10came on at that point but then he had a not very good game. I'm sure you'll see my colleague
03:14Dom Skirt's ratings, he wasn't one of Newcastle's better players, he's probably on the worse
03:18on the pitch. They tried more subs at the end, Miley came on, Will Asula came on, Kelly
03:24came on for Lewis Hall, it just didn't work. Newcastle looked disjointed, didn't really
03:28have a chance to get back into the game. They ran out, they were very disappointing, boos
03:32from the referee at full-time, smattering of boos, whether that was for the referee
03:36or the players or whatever. St James' Park certainly didn't turn on the team but it felt
03:40like it was another disappointing game. I'd say it just feels like one step forward, two
03:43steps back. Quarter of an hour, 20 minutes after the match, that's how it feels now.
03:50I could be speaking here after Wednesday and actually it doesn't really matter the grand
03:53scheme of things because it's another Carabao Cup final but with Nottingham Forest winning
03:57early in the day, that's a big result for them. They're going to start losing ground
04:01potentially in this race to the Champions League and they can't afford to have too many
04:05bad results like this, especially with Forest City and Liverpool up there later this month.
04:09So they're going to have to, hopefully, they're going to have to have a reaction against Arsenal.
04:13That 2-0 lead, as much as it's a 2-0 lead, it's looking dangerous, especially if Arsenal
04:17get a goal. So they have to figure out something to be done. But yeah, enough about that, we'll
04:20talk about that plenty this week, I'm sure, but right now they'll be looking at their
04:23wins. They'll be disappointed anyhow, we'll want to get a reaction from this team on Wednesday.
04:28And obviously the small matter of deadline day on Monday night, we expect Nottingham
04:30Castle to do very little, whether this performance changes that because they needed something
04:34off the bench. Of course, they've got Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson injured but, unfortunately,
04:38whilst they're injured, this is the squad they're left in and unless they're getting
04:41some of the transfer market, this is what's going to happen. They're not going to have
04:44anything off the bench. And they did look disjointed, I'm not sure what Eddie Harvin
04:47will do in the future to fix that, whether his subs need to do something. I don't know
04:50whether he changed too much. There's lots of reasons for it but, ultimately, Newcastle
04:55got beat today, very disappointed. And much like their Bournemouth game, they were outplayed
05:00out on four by Bournemouth. Don't think so much against Fulham, their levels dropped
05:04and Fulham were just well capitalised on. Newcastle had an off day and yeah, it's a
05:08shame Newcastle have to react to a win tonight after this defeat to Fulham.
