The National AI Office is looking into developing AI solutions in five areas, transport, health, agriculture, SMEs, MSMEs, and government digital services, says Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.

Speaking at the launch of 5G Advanced on Tuesday (Feb 4), Gobind said the office is identifying challenges in these sectors and leveraging AI to address them, adding that a three-month timeline has been set for this initiative.

Meanwhile, Digital Nasional Berhad chief executive officer Datuk Azman Ismail highlighted that 5G Advanced will offer improved network reliability and reduced latency, which are critical for applications requiring real-time responses.

00:00Leading the way, bringing 5G advanced technology to Malaysia.
00:05Congratulations once again.
00:09Having achieved the target of 80% by the end of 2023,
00:14BNB is now introducing a new paradigm of 5G connectivity,
00:19bringing significant enhancement to network performance,
00:24sustainability and intelligence.
00:27And this is called 5G advanced.
00:305G advanced builds upon the existing 5G infrastructure
00:35to offer enhanced capabilities and performance.
00:39The technology aims to deliver even higher data transfer speeds.
00:445G advanced promises better network reliability and reduced latency,
00:50which is absolutely crucial for applications requiring real-time responses.
00:57It will empower more demanding applications,
01:00including extended reality, augmented reality and virtual reality,
01:08and high-definition video streaming.
01:11What is important for us to understand is that
01:14whilst we speak about technology, whilst we speak about connectivity,
01:19it is important for us to ensure that there is delivery.
01:24Recently, ladies and gentlemen, as I said earlier in my opening,
01:28we launched the National AI Office.
01:32The National AI Office is looking at key areas,
01:36such as transport, health, agriculture,
01:41the SMEs and MSMEs, and of course, government digital services.
01:47These are five areas that we are looking at to work on this year.
01:52Of course, when my office says they want to work on it for one year,
01:55I say there is no such thing.
01:56In three months, I expect us to get into this
01:59and to see how we can isolate problems in those sectors
02:02and find solutions that deal with those problems using AI.
02:07This is important because if we are going to understand the impact of what we see today,
02:12we need to understand where we are with technology
02:15and of course, the government policy in terms of how we are going to deal with these challenges.
02:22It is not easy.
02:23We can speak about 4G, we can speak about 5G,
02:26we can speak about technology that develops after that.
02:30But the question is, how are we doing in terms of implementation?
02:34Dato' Azman, earlier you said, and I think I echo this,
02:38there is a lot more work to be done and we need to move a lot faster.
02:42We've got Anwar from MDAC here.
02:44I've emphasised this many, many times.
02:46And I think today we are in the company of individuals who understand this message.
02:52We need to start delivering in terms of solutions that deal with the problems in all sectors.
03:00I've also said in my speech earlier, if I may speak in English,
03:03the National AI Office is up and running.
03:06We have now, in the first quarter, focused on five different areas.
03:10We are focused on the transport, we are focused on the health sector,
03:14we are focused on agri-tech, we are focused on the SMEs and MSMEs,
03:19and also government digital services.
03:21What we want to do is, of course, we are working with all the ministries
03:24to look at what the problems are.
03:25We are creating centres of excellence in the ministries itself
03:28that are run by officials from the ministries,
03:30head by the minister themselves,
03:33so that we can together look at problems that these sectors have
03:37and how we can provide more AI solutions to these sectors moving ahead.
03:41So I think the technology that we see today is going to be very significant
03:44in helping us insofar as looking towards problems in those sectors are concerned
03:49and how at least we can develop solutions to those problems moving ahead.
03:53So the timing is perfect.
03:55Whilst we are up and running, the National AI Office,
03:58we are looking towards delivering solutions to problems in those sectors.
04:03We see technology like this developing,
04:05which will assist us in terms of giving us a lot more help
04:10in deciding how we should design systems that provide solutions to those problems,
04:14and of course at a much faster pace as well.
04:17So overall, that is what we see today.
