00:00Let's get a preview of this show today.
00:01I didn't think we'd be starting off with this story,
00:03but it seems to continue to have some legs
00:05in the world of sports and sports betting.
00:07There is a gambling ring that's currently
00:09under federal investigation for its role
00:11in two NBA betting cases.
00:12It was now also revealed it has been involved
00:16in that unusual wagering activity
00:18on three men's college basketball games this season.
00:21So are they correlated?
00:22It does appear so.
00:23Sportsbook accounts connected to the gambling ring
00:25bet against North Carolina A&T,
00:28Mississippi Valley State, and Eastern Michigan
00:30in games this season.
00:31Some of those same accounts also placed large wagers
00:35back on those John Tay Porter props.
00:38Remember him from the Toronto Raptors?
00:40So the NCAA has released a statement surrounding this
00:43saying they take sports betting very seriously
00:46and is fully committed to the protection
00:48of student athlete wellbeing and the integrity
00:50of competition due to confidentiality rules
00:52put in place by the NCAA's member schools.
00:54The NCAA will not comment on current
00:56or potential investigations.
00:58So we'll see if indeed these are all correlated
01:01and what comes from that, we will find out.
01:03Meanwhile, last year, you may remember there was a story
01:06about an umpire in Major League Baseball
01:09that was asked to take a leave of absence
01:10over some sports betting impropriety.
01:12Apparently Pat Hoberg was not betting on baseball.
01:17It was not his account,
01:19but someone was actually using his account.
01:22I spoke wrong there.
01:23Someone was using his sports betting account
01:25in order to place wagers, but it was not himself.
01:28Needless to say, he did obstruct the investigation
01:31Major League Baseball announced
01:33by deleting some old texts and Hoberg was fired.
01:36So no longer an umpire, one of the better ones,
01:37by the way, in Major League Baseball, which is a shame.
01:39Some breaking news in college basketball today,
01:41not related to sports betting.
01:43I'm happy to say Leonard Hamilton,
01:44longtime head coach of Florida State University
01:47is stepping down.
01:48He's being sued by six former players
01:51from the 23-24 team based on NIL promises
01:55that were allegedly not kept.
01:56$250,000 in NIL compensations.
02:00The plaintiffs are Darren Green, Deontay Green,
02:03Cameron Fletcher, Josh Nickelberry,
02:05Primo Spears, and Jalen Warry.
02:07This was filed in Leon County.
02:09And needless to say, Hamilton had 456 wins in 22 seasons.
02:16He's the winningest coach in FSU history
02:18and also led Miami to a lot of success
02:20when he was the head coach there as well.
02:22We'll see if he ends up coaching again.
02:24Meanwhile, looks like Cooper Cup indeed
02:26is gonna be searching for a new home.
02:27He posted on social media that he expects to be traded.
02:30The Rams have informed him of such.
02:32He doesn't know where he's going to end up.
02:34It was a tough year for Cooper Cup
02:35coming back off multiple injuries
02:37where Puka Nakua certainly outshined him
02:40and wasn't really a big part of the Rams' game plan,
02:42let's be honest, toward the end of the season.
02:44The Washington Commanders are going to be keeping their name,
02:48at least for the time being, the owner of the Commanders,
02:51Josh Harris, making the announcement yesterday
02:53at the end of season press conference,
02:55saying, I think it's been embraced by our team,
02:57our culture, and our coaching staff.
02:59Here is more on Harris deciding to keep the name Commanders.
03:03So right now, and now in this building,
03:07the name Commanders means something.
03:10It means that, you know, it's about players who,
03:16you know, love football, are great at football,
03:20hit hard, mentally tough, great teammates.
03:24And so it's really meaningful
03:26that that name is growing in meaning.
03:28And so, but as far as rebranding and bringing our past,
03:33you know, which obviously I grew up with
03:35and all the Super Bowl championships
03:37and our future together,
03:39you're going to see us head back towards, you know,
03:42honoring our past and bringing it together with our future.
03:46Houston Texans have found their new offensive coordinator.
03:48Nick Kaley will be the new signal caller
03:51for the Houston Texans.
03:53They of course fired their offensive coordinator,
03:55so he takes over.
03:56He's never been an OC, 42 years old.
03:58Meanwhile, University of Washington,
03:59Brendan Carroll, a coach there.
04:01Carroll, the last name, no surprise,
04:04as what team he joins in the NFL?
04:06With his dad, the Las Vegas Raiders.
04:08He will be offensive line coach.
04:10Chip Kelly is there as well.
04:11All right, let's get to the NBA.
04:12Whoa, what's going on with the Orlando Magic?
04:14They are one and nine in their past 10
04:15after a fantastic season.
04:17They seem to be fading a little bit.
04:18Andrew Wiggins had 25 points.
04:20Steph Curry had 24.
04:22The Warriors came all the way back
04:23to beat the Magic 104 to 99.
04:25All about halftime adjustments
04:27in order to head coach Steve Kerr.
04:28I thought we woke up, you know,
04:30we were asleep in the first half.
04:32And we had some possessions that made no sense.
04:36And, you know, the guys locked in at halftime,
04:41scored I think the first six or eight points.
04:43Quentin was fantastic.
04:45Those first few minutes of the third quarter
04:47set a really good tone and that got us the lead.
04:51And then, of course, they battled back
04:53in the fourth, did a great job,
04:54but we were able to hang on.
04:56Was anything specific that was addressed
04:58at halftime that you can share?
05:01Just brilliant coaching, mainly, you know.
05:03Key adjustments, I don't really remember
05:05what those adjustments were, but I know they were key.
05:08And I made them, so it was mainly about me.
05:13Very funny there from Steve Kerr.
05:15All right, you know who else is having fun?
05:17The Portland Trailblazers.
05:18Wow, are they on fire?
05:19Eight and one in their last nine games.
05:22They win again last night, 121 to 119.
05:23Former son De'Andre Ayton with a huge game,
05:2525 points and 20 rebounds.
05:28Although in the loss by the Phoenix Suns,
05:30Devin Booker talked about becoming
05:32the Suns' all-time leading scorer.
05:35Mina means everything.
05:38You know, me and you have talked about it for some time.
05:41You know, just being drafted to the franchise,
05:46them believing me, taking a chance on me
05:48as a 18-year-old kid and, you know,
05:51going through a rebuild phase and just sticking with it.
05:56You know, keeping my head down,
05:58the love and the support's all the way been there.
06:01And, you know, I don't take it for granted.
06:03You know, I take it seriously,
06:06putting Phoenix across my chest.
06:08Yeah.
06:08Yeah, it is quite a surprise to see the career
06:11that Booker has had, outscoring all the great members
06:13of the Phoenix Suns.
06:14Meanwhile, guess who's outscoring everyone again?
06:16No surprise for the Knicks is Jalen Brunson.
06:19He had a 42-spot last night, also 10 assists.
06:21The Knicks beat the Rockets.
06:23Final score, 124 to 118.
06:25Brunson, fantastic again.
06:2617 points in the fourth quarter.
06:29They trailed by 11.
06:30He brings them all the way back.
06:31And, of course, Ibe Udoka, the head coach of the Rockets,
06:34was not pleased with the defensive effort.
06:37I don't think it was rim protection.
06:38I think it was one-on-one defense.
06:42They had a 46-point quarter.
06:44You know, we scored 29, we scored 118.
06:47We scored enough points to win.
06:48But, very soft and uncompetitive defensively,
06:53just going at us one-on-one.
06:54And we're complaining about offensive fouls,
06:56not boxing out, not doing our assignment,
07:00getting back cut, off-ball actions.
07:03That adds up to 46.
07:04And so, scored enough to win.
07:07It seemed like you were trying to make some substitutions
07:09and find somebody who could guard.
07:11Did you see anything that you thought was working well?
07:15I mean, a few guys, but not enough.
07:17Even our supposed defenders got cooked tonight.
07:24Let's go to the big upset in college basketball.
07:26Last night, two teams ranked in the top 25,
07:29but the lower team ranked gets the win.
07:31Kansas defeats Iowa State 69-52.
07:35Incredible defense last night from the Jayhawks.
07:38Zeke Mayo had 17.
07:39Hunter Dickinson had 14 as well.
07:42It's certainly a 52-point outcome
07:45for the defense of the Jayhawks,
07:47is what Bill Self was talking about
07:49after last night's game.
07:50Yeah, I thought the first shot defense
07:52was pretty good first half.
07:55And we didn't rebound the ball like I thought we could've.
07:59We really guarded them.
08:00And we got them into the last 10 seconds of the shot clock,
08:03I think, 10 out of the 30 possessions the first half.
08:06So, that was good.
08:07We did a good job and did a great job
08:13on their victory, especially.
08:16But yeah, guys, this storyline,
08:19you guys can do whatever you want to the storyline.
08:22You could say defense or whatever.
08:23The storyline to me on tonight
08:25is how the guys responded after a really crappy last 48 hours.
08:29So, really proud of them.
