00:00Frankwals, Frankwals, it's time for Frankwals. Frank talks while Frank walks. It's time for Frankwals.
00:20Alright, some people are born just to do something. And this guy was born to kick.
00:26We're talking about Cameron Dicker, the kicker. I still think of him as the San Diego Chargers. They should never have left San Diego.
00:34It's interesting, not for me to say.
00:36Not for you to say, but other Chargers, Los Angeles Chargers, and well, you had a good season this year, so let's go on a walk and talk about that.
00:44Heck yeah.
00:46Now, the most interesting moment, I would say, of your career so far, that free kick. It is so rare that it's only happened once before, and that was Ray Wershing.
01:02Back when he was a Charger, too.
01:06And it was like the fortunate circumstances, because it was a bad penalty, and it was kind of an easy kick.
01:14Ended up being, for that situation, yeah. I mean, nothing's coming at you. 57, it's like just everyday life. You just go out there.
01:22The weird part is not having the full routine, right?
01:25Yeah.
01:26So, it's like golf, like kicking, everything's a routine. So, having the completely different routine was the only weird thing.
01:35But it was like, if you think of something like that happening, you think, oh, it's a 70 yard, or it's an 80 yarder.
01:41But the penalty really put it on a tee for you.
01:46I know. I was hoping we didn't have the penalty. I was hoping maybe we'd go for the long kick, because I knew we had the opportunity for it.
01:54But it worked out to be the 57, so it was nice.
01:58You know what's amazing is, and I watch kickers like you and the NFL today.
02:03When I was growing up, I'm older than you, obviously, but 50 yard field goals, you see one or two a year.
02:14Yeah.
02:15Now you see them every week.
02:16Yeah, it's kind of wild. I was talking with Phil Dawson about this when I was deciding to come out of college or not to go to the NFL.
02:23And he kind of broke it down pretty easily. He's like, back when I was playing, I could be 80% and knew I had my job next year.
02:29In today's game, if you're 90%, you should have your job. Under that, it's kind of like, hey, we can find somebody.
02:36I mean, the kickers today are just incredible. I mean, should they move the goalpost a little bit?
02:45It's harder to kick in college than it is in the pros, if you ask me.
02:49I agree.
02:50The wide benchmarks.
02:52I agree. And I think your operations are better in the NFL. I think that's one of the big changes.
02:57I think guys have been talented, but you used to have, you didn't have a guy holding.
03:01Sometimes you'd have a kicker who punted, but you'd have like a quarterback holding.
03:04Yeah, the punter or the backup quarterback was typically the holder.
03:08Holder, yep. And so the backup quarterback, whatever it is going in there, it's typically not as good.
03:13And they didn't use to specialize in snapping. So when that was happening, it was even probably way worse, too.
03:20Now, you are the first NFL player born in Hong Kong.
03:24Yeah.
03:25And you spent some formative years in China.
03:29I did.
03:30What was that like?
03:31It was awesome. It was really fun growing up there.
03:34I think obviously as an adult, you view things differently.
03:37But growing up there as a kid, you don't have the rules that are in place.
03:41You're just enjoying life. And I mean, we lived in a nice gated community.
03:46We were fortunate to have that.
03:47And so being in that position and just being able to mess around and have fun with random friends along the way.
03:54And of course, you went to University of Texas and a high school that's like a hotbed of professional athletes.
04:02Yep, Lake Travis. And then our rival, Westlake, came up, came out with a bunch of guys, too.
04:07But for us, on my team this year, there was two other guys from my high school.
04:11So that's kind of wild.
04:13Because when you think about Texas high school football, it's probably the highest level.
04:18Yep. I'd say so.
04:20I mean, people like to say Florida. People like to say kind of wherever else, California.
04:24I think Texas is the mark.
04:27I mean, Texas is legendary, Friday Night Lights and everything.
04:31Yep.
04:32And of course, you went to the University of Texas.
04:33I did. So I was 25 minutes away from home.
04:36They offered me my junior year.
04:38And I mean, what beats that?
04:40It's the biggest, greatest school in the country.
04:42So I mean, that was a no-brainer for me.
04:47Now, what do you think about Texas now being in the SEC?
04:50I think it's exciting. I think everybody does.
04:52It's bigger football. Like they say, it just means more.
04:55So I've adopted that in the locker room, talking trash to guys.
04:58And so it was fun this year watching those boys kill it.
05:01I mean, of all the SEC schools, the Georgias, the Alabamas, Auburn,
05:07the only one standing in the Final Four is Texas.
05:10I know. And I think it's going to be that way for a while.
05:12I think Texas is there.
05:14I think Arch Manning is going to be the next big thing.
05:17Arch Manning is going to be huge, I feel like.
05:19So he's an awesome guy and just like a good dude in there.
05:22So it's fun to have guys that are on that big of a platform that are also just good people.
05:27Now, when you're kicking a ball, that's all eyes are on you.
05:30There's always a different place.
05:32You have the quarterback snap where someone might be looking at the receiver.
05:36You might be looking at the running back.
05:38You might be looking at the defensive backs.
05:40But when you're there and you're trying to kick a field goal, all eyes are on you.
05:45What does that moment feel like?
05:47I mean, it's exciting. It's why I do what I do.
05:51It's just that's the name of the game.
05:53And so for people, I think the difference in the level of people is how they can handle that stuff.
05:58For me, I know at the end of the day I don't really care about what other people think.
06:03So I know for me, my relationship is my faith and everything is in Jesus.
06:07And so that's my foundation.
06:09And so being able to lay back on that and know that I'm loved regardless of what happens,
06:13I just block it all out.
06:16Now, I see that you're a fan of Liverpool.
06:18Yeah.
06:19And you're having a great season this year.
06:20Having a great season this year. It's been awesome to watch.
06:23I'm hoping that they stubbed their toe.
06:26Arsenal guy.
06:27What?
06:28Yeah, come on.
06:29Arsenal just lost today too.
06:31That was one of those EFL games.
06:34Yeah, but you're still competing for a trophy.
06:36Now they're out of a trophy. Another year, no trophy.
06:39If losing that means that they can focus on the champions?
06:44No chance. No chance any of those are happening.
06:47Mo Salah, if it ever comes there, Mo Salah is clear in the way.
06:51I want Arsenal to win. Come on.
06:53I think it's going to be a while. I don't know what to tell you.
06:56I think it's going to be a while.
06:59So, what do you have going on besides football and your offseason now?
07:06What would be things you'd be doing to prepare for next season?
07:09Right now, first like month, two months, it's kind of like relax,
07:14get my body back under me, start working out again here pretty soon.
07:19But I won't start kicking for about a month and a half.
07:22Two months after the season and then for that point it's just travel.
07:26I love to travel, so I'll be out and about going to Liverpool game,
07:29a Wrexham game, going to go travel around,
07:33probably go to Scotland or something and go golf.
07:36Now, how many, now, you look at golfers, they're on the tee all the time.
07:42They're kicking, baseball players are in the batting cage.
07:45For a kicker, what do you do to like, do you like just set up and kick a whole bunch of times?
07:54When you start going again, you kind of have your rep counts like a pitcher.
07:57I'd say we're closer to a pitcher in that regard of where your rep counted.
08:01You go a couple times a week, so during the season I go three total days a week.
08:05And so, I'll go Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday.
08:08So, I have two days off in between the game and after the game.
08:11And so, I'd say it's closest to a pitcher.
08:13Now, are there any charities you want to talk about that you feel geared to?
08:18I've worked with the Friendship Foundation a lot, which has been a huge honor of mine.
08:22And so, that's been super fun.
08:24And so, they're a local one out in Manhattan Beach, and they just help special needs kids.
08:29And we have a great time working with them and just helping people feel like they're connected to the community
08:34and just engaged with everything in life.
08:36Well, thanks for joining us. It was a good time.
08:38Thank you. I appreciate it. Thank you.
08:40Good luck. But I still want Arcelor.
08:43I know. Liverpool's going to go, baby.
08:45Go, go.
08:46Come on. Come on.
08:52Woo!
