00:52Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra García from Telesurf Studios in
00:56Havana, Cuba.
00:57We begin with the news.
01:11On Sunday, Honduras holds primary elections to choose the next candidates for the presidency,
01:16regional and municipal governments and members of parliament.
01:20Since early morning, Hondurans have attended the over 5,000 voting centers set up throughout
01:25the national territory to exercise their right to vote.
01:29In this regard, the National Electoral Council assured the transparency of the electoral
01:33process and defended the new technological measures that will warranty the citizens'
01:38vote.
01:39After the opening of the voting centers, more than 5.8 million Hondurans are called to vote
01:45for the candidates of the political organizations, including the Free Party, the Liberal Party
01:50and the National Party.
01:59I can confirm that this National Electoral Council is delivering an election with all
02:08the conditions to be remembered as the most transparent and faithful to the people's will
02:16in our history.
02:20The Honduran National Electoral Council Advisor-Secretary Ana Paola Hall has addressed the resistance
02:26of some political sectors to use the biometric voting system.
02:33Since this is the first time that the electoral law is enforced in primary elections, there
02:40is a predictable resistance to the new rules, especially to biometrics.
02:45But we have taken firm steps so that this election has the required logistics, documents
02:51and technology, and that it may be followed by national and international observers.
03:00The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, led the Festival for National Sovereignty
03:05in the capital, Zócalo Square.
03:06During the day, the national president explained the achievements of the Agreement on Tariffs
03:12reached with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, during a telephone call.
03:16In addition, the head of state affirmed her commitment to the sovereignty of the Mexican
03:20people.
03:21She reaffirmed that the agreement with the United States is an achievement of the people
03:25and highlighted the dialogue and respect between both nations.
03:30In Argentina, 15 people are dead as a result of flash floods caused by heavy rain associated
03:53with the storm that hit Bahía Blanca.
03:55The situation led to evacuation of more than 1,000 people, who were taken to 13 shelters
04:02set up by the regional authorities.
04:04Meanwhile, security and risk management forces continue to search for two adults and two
04:10minors who are still missing.
04:12In addition, lack of electricity has affected a private hospital in the south, and there
04:17is also damage to roads and buildings.
04:25In the United States, New York authorities have issued an alert due to wildfires in Pine
04:29Barrens in Suffolk County.
04:32The local authorities say they are using helicopters of the New York National Guard, firefighting
04:38agencies and civil protection agencies to fight the fires and to attend to the people
04:43affected.
04:44The situation has been described as catastrophic, so preventive measures have been put in place,
04:50like the closure of the surrounding roads and the evacuation of the towns near the fire.
05:00In New Zealand, the Predator Free 2050 is working towards eradication of three of their
05:06most damaging predators, rats, stoats and possums.
05:10It is part of a huge ongoing effort to make the whole of New Zealand safe for native wildlife
05:17to breed and flourish.
05:19Scientists believe fewer predators may also have a significant upside in the fight against
05:24global warming.
05:26Thanks to the excessive public awareness campaigns, this is now a truly nationwide eradication
05:32movement that has captured people's attention.
05:49Welcome back to From the South.
06:17The Palestinian movement Hamas submits three conditions for negotiations on the second
06:21phase of the ceasefire agreement.
06:24Hassem Kassem, spokesman for the resistance movement, stated that they presented three
06:29conditions, an exchange of prisoners, a complete withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Strip
06:35and a permanent ceasefire.
06:37Earlier, Hamas reported positive signals regarding the start of negotiations on the second phase
06:42of the agreement.
06:44The first stage of the ceasefire, which included the release of 30 Israelis and over 1,000
06:49Palestinian prisoners and detainees, and the gradual Israeli-military withdrawal from the
06:54Gaza Strip, came to an end on March 1.
07:02Authorities in the Gaza Strip have requested international assistance in restoring the
07:06electricity system in the enclave.
07:08The Gazan Electricity Company reiterated the need for urgent assistance to ensure the restoration
07:14of the electricity service.
07:16They say Israel destroyed 70% of the electricity grid and that they are also to blame for preventing
07:23the entry of materials and machinery.
07:26In this regard, the United Nations Organization has said that the reconstruction of the Gaza
07:30Strip might take as much as 15 years at an estimated cost of over $53 billion.
07:43In Syria, the number of people killed in the escalation of violence west of the country
07:47by the repressive forces of the de facto government has risen to over 1,000.

07:59in sectarian massacres.
08:01In addition, 148 former military personnel of the Bashar al-Assad government were killed
08:07during clashes with security and defense ministry personnel while they were traveling through
08:13the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus, where the field executions took place.
08:23Iranian leader Sayyed Ali Khamenei says the insistence of some powers to hold negotiations
08:29with Iran is not aimed at resolving problems but at imposing their conditions.
08:34In a meeting with the heads of the three branches of the Iranian government and a group of senior
08:39military officials, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei,
08:44made it clear that Western principles are against Islamic ones.
08:49The Ayatollah said these governments are not seeking to negotiate solidly the nuclear issue
08:54but rather to use the negotiations as a way to create new expectations in Iran's defense
08:59capabilities and its international capabilities.
09:07Some abusive governments insist on negotiating but it is not aimed at solving problems but
09:12rather at them dictating their will.
09:14They say, let's negotiate, to impose what they want to the other parties sitting across
09:18the table.
09:20Iran's supreme leader also spoke about their responsiveness and demands that the country
09:25may or may not be able to meet in an international arena.
09:31The problem is not only the nuclear issue, there are new demands that Iran will not be
09:36able to meet, like demands on the country's defense capability, and on the country's international
09:41capability.
09:42Iran will be urged not to do certain things, not to meet with certain people, not to go
09:47to certain places, not to produce certain items, that the range of its missiles should
09:51not exceed a certain distance.
09:54Is it possible for anyone to accept such demands?
09:59In other news, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, at least 11 people were killed
10:03after a bomb exploded in a town located in the northeast of the country.
10:08The incident took place in Gesa, located in the territory of Massisi, where the rebel
10:13group March 23 Movement perpetrated an attack against a group of civilians.
10:18According to information provided by the administrator of the Massisi territory, Colonel Rami Matta
10:23da Soula, the rebels threw the device on one of the houses, injuring five people who were
10:28immediately taken to the hospital.
10:31Various authorities revealed that taking into account that the front line is in another
10:35location, the M-23 attack was intentionally directed against civilians.
10:54Negotiations between the United States and Ukraine on the terms of the peace treaty will
11:00take place this Tuesday in Saudi Arabia.
11:03The United States Special Envoy Steve Vitkoff said that during the meeting they will discuss
11:08the basic aspects of the settlement of the special operation and a six-month halt of
11:13the confrontation.
11:15Taking part from the US side will be Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve
11:20Vitkoff and Security Adviser Mike Bott, and from the Ukrainian side, the head of the presidential
11:26office Andrew Yermak.
11:28According to the Bloomberg Agency, US President Donald Trump demanded that CAIF agree to a
11:33quick ceasefire, with Russia as a condition for signing a mineral deal.
11:44In France, hundreds of people have protested against the proposal of sending troops to
11:48Ukraine made by President Emmanuel Macron.
11:51The demonstrators carried banners saying, Macron, we will not die for Ukraine and we
11:57do not want your war.
11:59This came on the heels of a speech by President Macron in which he did not rule out the possibility
12:05of sending soldiers to Ukraine.
12:07Macron said that peace in Ukraine required the deployment of European forces, as he considers
12:13Ukrainian forces fragile.
12:15Macron claims the European army is more effective in the art of deterrence.
12:45Welcome back to From the South.
12:56At the Vatican, press of the Holy See reported that Pope Francis remains stable and there
13:01is a gradual and slight improvement in his health.
13:04The doctors of the Gemelli Hospital reported a gradual improvement in the condition of
13:09Pope Francis, who has stayed in the hospital for three weeks with pneumonia.
13:13In this sense, the Vatican underlined that the Holy Father continues to alternate mechanical
13:18ventilation during the night and high-flow oxygenation during the day.
13:23On the evening of February 28th last, Pope Francis suffered a bronchial spasm with an
13:30attack of vomiting and inhalation, which caused a strong deterioration in the state of his
13:35respiratory system.
13:36In Germany, airport employees staged a surprise strike to demand better working conditions
13:48and fair wages.
13:49The Union de Servicios Unidos announced the stoppage of the service for Monday, March
13:5410th.
13:55However, they advanced the protest without warning, which caused thousands of travellers
14:00to be stranded at the air terminal.
14:02The workers denounced excessive workloads in poor working conditions.
14:07They also questioned the lack of specialized personnel in the area.
14:10Additionally, the Union organization qualifies the day as successful since the workers complied
14:16with the strike call in its totality.
14:25A strike must cause economic damage.
14:28That's why we are on strike today.
14:30We know that it puts an enormous burden on passengers.
14:33Our colleagues know that too, but they've said we have to go on strike.
14:36It has to be effective so that we can have a reasonable offer to negotiate.
14:42Canadian authorities reported Friday night a shooting in which a dozen people were injured
14:47at a pub in eastern Toronto.
14:49The Toronto Police Service reported that police recorded emergency calls regarding shooting
14:54incidents at the Piper Arms establishment at about 10.40pm on Friday.
14:59The initial investigations revealed that three men entered and acted against patrons.
15:04However, no arrests were made at the time.
15:07All victims were transported to hospitals, where six of them sustained non-life-threatening
15:12gunshot injuries, while the other six were injured by objects and broken glass at the
15:18scene.
15:36On this Saturday, March 8th, the Special Olympics Winter Games Turin 2025 were inaugurated
15:42with thousands of attendees.
15:44The Special Olympics, held from March 8th to 15th, is the world's largest sports and
15:49humanitarian event, with more than 1,500 athletes from 100 delegations competing in eight sports
15:56in an international demonstration of inclusion, acceptance and unity, which are alpine skiing,

16:09then sport.
16:10The Special Olympics are held every two years and its mission is that, through the power
16:14of sport, people with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths and abilities, skills
16:21and success.
16:37In China, a unique writing system created and used by women recovers its essence through
16:42various handicraft expressions nowadays.
16:45The system in question is called Núshū and arose in the 19th century in the Chinese province
16:51of Hunan.
16:52It has its origins in Chinese characters but, instead of having a square shape, this script
16:57adopts filiform and oblique strokes in forms of slangs.
17:02Moreover, this writing literally means women's writing and, from it, a whole culture was
17:07generated.
17:08Núshū was transmitted mainly from mothers to daughters and was practiced among sisters
17:13and friends for pleasure.
17:20Núshū writing was used by women who, in the feudal era, had no access to education and
17:26often used it to write their autobiographies.
17:29The Núshū culture evolved to become internationally known, however, local and national authorities
17:34are trying to revive it as this culture is in danger of disappearance since Yang Huanyi,
17:40the last writer and holder of the Núshū, passed away on September 20th, 2004.
17:45During my time designing character-based jewelry, I happened to open a book from the
18:00shelf and found the unique beauty of Núshū characters.
18:06They resemble curved willow leaves, crescent moons, and even sharp little knives.
18:14As I delved deeper into Núshū culture, I was deeply moved by its blend of gentleness
18:19and resilience, which inspired me to create the Núshū Jewelry series.
