00:00Is porn giving you brain fog? I'm Dr. Trish Lee. Let's talk about the impact pornography is having on your thinking ability in 2024.
00:11It's important that we recognize that pornography has come a long way in the last couple decades, and so has the damage to your brain.
00:20So I want you to know that porn is highly addictive, and that addictive nature makes you keep going back for more.
00:30The reason that it's addictive is because on first and second consumption of porn when you were young, your young brain changed itself to need higher levels of dopamine.
00:43So essentially, the seeds of addiction were planted into that young brain of yours, and if you kept going back and watering those seeds through consistent, frequent, and especially intense consumption,
00:59and what I mean by intense is going into genres and acts and having multiple many tabs open so that you can find the highest amount of dopamine in the shortest amount of time,
01:14we know that that is damaging your brain, and it's giving you brain fog.
01:20Porn is highly addictive, and as you keep going back for more, it is damaging your brain and your ability to think.
01:29So let's move on to the idea that this addictive nature of porn that keeps pulling you back in, those high levels of dopamine,
01:39what they're doing is altering the reward pathways in your brain.
01:46So in the midbrain is something referred to as the reward center.
01:50The reward center has dopamine receptors in that area so that when you feel pleasure, it's because those dopamine receptors are firing up and they're becoming sensitized.
02:04But if you keep going back to porn, and especially at high levels, you are desensitizing those dopamine receptors so they can't feel pleasure anymore,
02:16except for at really, really, really, really, really, really high levels.
02:21So the idea there is that if you keep going back to porn, you are desensitizing the reward center and changing the way that the reward pathways fire up.
02:34Now the reward pathways get fired up linked to the screen, and unfortunately, they no longer fire up as much when you are back in your life.
02:47So the way dopamine is supposed to work at healthy levels is you go to work and you get some dopamine from your work, which keeps you working and enjoying it.
02:56At the same time, you engage with your partner, whether that be in your awesome sex life or in intimacy, just hanging out with your bestie, your partner in crime, your PIC.
03:08Hopefully your partner ranks up there.
03:11So just having intimacy with your partner and having a nice time and then, of course, having sexual intimacy, you should be getting the highest levels of dopamine from those experiences.
03:25Dopamine should come on a scale from zero to 10, and those experiences should register at seven, eight or nine.
03:32Unfortunately, when your brain is trained to go to porn, you've trained it to go back to level 15.
03:40Level 15 stimulation is what is desensitizing those dopamine receptors in your brain and changing the pathways.
03:49So the pathways that you want to lead you into your life are weeded over.
03:56They're no longer strongly traversed with dopamine so that you want to get back to work, get back to your partner, and get back to your hobbies.
04:05Instead, when you keep firing up the pathways back to porn, and especially at level 15, your brain will want to go there instead.
04:15Instead, and we know this from research, that many men begin to prefer masturbation and don't want to be with their partner because they get more stimulation from the high levels of mental stimulation from fantasy and the high levels of physical stimulation from masturbation.
04:34They don't have those pathways back to their partner fired up.
04:38The pathways back to porn win out.
04:41This is how your brain fog sets in.
04:44It happens because you continue to desensitize your brain.
04:50The reward pathways from the midbrain up to the frontal lobe are becoming desensitized also.
04:57And we know from science your frontal lobe has hypofrontality, meaning it slows down and it's not working as well as it would without porn.
05:08So that leads us to the detrimental cognitive effects of pornography consumption.
05:15We know from science that porn makes it so that your thinking, your memory, your clarity, your attention, your focus, your motivation are all decreased.
05:30These are cognitive abilities that would be stronger if you weren't consuming pornography.
05:36So when you leave porn behind, guess what happens?
05:41That brain fog that you've been experiencing, it can clear.
05:46The fog can clear when you leave porn behind.
