00:00From calorie count to portion sizes,
00:02we wanted to find out all the differences
00:04between five guys in Italy and the US.
00:07This is Food Wars.
00:11Burgers in Italy come in two sizes, little and regular.
00:15Little has one pate and regular has two.
00:18Our burgers also come in two sizes, little and regular.
00:21Let's weigh a regular plain hamburger in both countries
00:24to see who has the bigger burgers.
00:26That's 136 grams.
00:31138 grams.
00:33The burger mark is really off-putting.
00:37Any difference might be down to the patties.
00:40Five Guys actually tells us that the US patties
00:42should weigh about 94 grams each, or 3.3 ounces,
00:45although this will be the weight before cooking.
00:48The Five Guys Italy website says that the patties,
00:50when uncooked, should weigh 67 grams.
00:53So we're gonna see if that's true.
00:55Obviously, these have been cooked,
00:57so the meat should have released some fat,
00:59but we're gonna find out soon.
01:02This is a Five Guys hot dog.
01:04It looks a little weird
01:05because they slice them down the middle to cook them.
01:07I really love how these cook when they're sliced.
01:10Let's measure the length first.
01:12That's about 16.2 centimeters.
01:15I think that's about 15 centimeters.
01:19Yeah, six inches.
01:20We don't use inches in it.
01:23Now let's weigh the plain hot dog.
01:25That is 144 grams.
01:28We're now gonna weigh it.
01:30So, just for reference,
01:31we put mustard, ketchup, and onions in this hot dog.
01:35So, obviously, it's gonna be a bit heavier
01:37than a regular one.
01:38Let's see.
01:39195 grams.
01:42Our fries come in three sizes
01:44in either plain or Cajun spice.
01:46You can get little, regular, or large.
01:49Our Five Guys fries come in three sizes,
01:52either plain or with Cajun spice.
01:54Little, regular, and large.
01:56According to Five Guys,
01:58the little should weigh 227 grams.
02:00Let's see if that's true.
02:02It's not.
02:03It's 82 grams.
02:05This is 82, oh, wait.
02:07Yeah, it's 82 grams.
02:09Our little fries should weigh 256 grams.
02:13103 grams.
02:14So, we did ask a Five Guys employee
02:17about how they package their fries.
02:19They scoop the fries into one of these cups,
02:22put that in the bag,
02:23and then they do another scoop of fries on top, I think.
02:27So, that could be the reason
02:28why some of these weights are off.
02:29There's just, like, fries everywhere.
02:31Don't really know which fry came from which cup.
02:34It's a mess.
02:35We're supposed to have 1,225 grams altogether,
02:39but right now we're sitting at 870 grams,
02:42including the extra fries, which aren't really extra.
02:45So, our total should have been 1,220 grams,
02:48but we got 580 grams, so that's less than half.
02:53Milkshakes in Italy come in one size,
02:55and this is supposed to be 400 milliliters.
02:58So, this is the vanilla milkshake.
03:00In the U.S., I believe we only have one size of milkshake,
03:03so let's see how much we get.
03:05It's actually almost 500.
03:07I'll say it's, like, 480 milliliters,
03:12something around that.
03:16Here's everything you'll find at Five Guys in the U.S.
03:18that you won't find in Italy.
03:20Here's everything you'll find at Five Guys Italy
03:22that you won't find in the U.S.
03:24The owners of Five Guys like to keep the restaurants
03:26and the menus all the same,
03:28so there aren't any exclusive burger options in the U.S.
03:31This is the Five Guys burger menu.
03:33So, our burger menus are almost exactly the same.
03:36The only difference is that here,
03:38you can order two additional patties, not just one.
03:42So, you end up with a burger with four patties in it.
03:46I'm not sure you can do that in the U.S.,
03:47maybe if you ask nicely,
03:49but it's an official feature here.
03:52Since Five Guys is known for its customizable options,
03:54you probably could order two extra patties for your burger,
03:58but we'll let you have this one, Claudia.
04:00But seeing as America doesn't have
04:01official exclusive menu items,
04:03Five Guys enthusiasts had to get creative
04:05and make their own in the form of an unofficial secret menu.
04:09So, this is the patty melt.
04:10It's a grilled cheese sandwich
04:11with an extra patty inside.
04:13It looks kinda good to me.
04:15I love when restaurants do grilled cheeses
04:18with the buns of the burgers.
04:20I think it tastes so good.
04:23I feel like I like this better than the Five Guys burgers.
04:27It's something about the way the bread gets all toasty.
04:29It just makes it so much more delicious.
04:31So, next is the artery annihilator.
04:34That's a little ridiculous.
04:37So, we have to put a bacon hot dog
04:39inside of a bacon cheeseburger.
04:42How I'm gonna do that, I don't know.
04:44What I think is right is making it edible in some form.
04:48So, I'm just gonna, like, break it up a little.
04:53I'm trying to squish it down,
04:55because it's not gonna fit into my mouth.
04:57Okay.
04:58This literally sucks.
05:03Like, don't order this.
05:04There's no reason for you to...
05:06If you want a hot dog and a burger...
05:08A burger?
05:10Let me swallow this stupid bite of food.
05:11Hold on.
05:12I feel like putting the hot dog into the burger
05:15doesn't make it taste any better.
05:17It just makes it a lot harder to eat
05:19and a lot less enjoyable of an experience.
05:21So, I think this is really not fun or good.
05:24To me, I think this should be at the top, so let's try it.
05:28Double bread.
05:29Yeah, there's a bit of sauce.
05:31Right.
05:33So, here's your Italian version.
05:36Artery annihilator.
05:37Right.
05:38I don't know.
05:38I feel like this is annihilating my eyesight as well,
05:42on top of my arteries, if I were to try it.
05:51Too much stuff.
05:52Five Guys is, of course, famous for its wide selection of free toppings.
05:56According to Five Guys, there are over 250,000 ways to customize your burger.
06:01Now, these aren't exclusive toppings, but here's what you can get.
06:04The only exclusive topping we have in America is A1 sauce.
06:08In Italy, the toppings are almost exactly the same as in the US,
06:11but we do have one exclusive sauce, which is the HP sauce.
06:15According to chefs at Five Guys, when customizing your burger,
06:18there's a specific way it has to be stacked within their rules.
06:22It should be the bottom bun, then any wet items like grilled onions or mushrooms,
06:27then the first patty, two slices of cheese, then another patty,
06:31then dry items like lettuce, tomatoes, and jalapenos go on top,
06:35and then there's the top bun to finish it all off.
06:37Let's see if it came in the order that it's supposed to come in.
06:40So at the bottom, I see the grilled onions, I see grilled mushrooms, and I also see
06:47peppers, green peppers.
06:48So it's already out of order because the jalapenos are on the bottom for some reason.
06:53I feel like, I don't know, I feel like this, if it doesn't affect the taste, I personally do not
06:58care, but if it's their law in the Five Guys, then I guess you should be doing it, I don't know.
07:03All right, so we got the first patty, the two slices of cheese, another patty,
07:07and then on top, we have the lettuce and tomatoes.
07:10Let's check if the order is the same here in Italy.
07:13So yes, we got bottom bun, onions and mushrooms.
07:17We got a patty, cheese.
07:21We got another patty, tomatoes, and lettuce at the top.
07:26Good job, Five Guys.
07:28Five Guys also offers sandwich options.
07:30There aren't any exclusive sandwiches in the U.S., but here's what you can get.
07:33So we have a grilled cheese, a BLT, and a veggie sandwich.
07:37Veggie sandwich.
07:43It's not bad.
07:44It's just a little too vegetable heavy for me.
07:46No.
07:48Next is the BLT, which if you mess this up...
07:56Yeah, it tastes like an okay BLT, it just mostly tastes like bacon.
08:00And then we have the grilled cheese, which I think will be good because I already liked
08:04the patty melt and they're like sisters.
08:08That's a really good grilled cheese.
08:10We do have one exclusive in Italy, which is a BLT sandwich with cheese,
08:14which is supposed to be this one, but there's been a bit of a mix up in the order.
08:21And the one we got has just cheese and a lot of bacon.
08:24There aren't any exclusive Five Guys hot dog options in either country,
08:28but here's what you can get.
08:30A hot dog, a bacon dog, a cheese dog, or a bacon cheese dog.
08:34I've never had a hot dog with cheese on it, so I am kind of intrigued.
08:38I will say though, I am a fan of the slicing the hot dog and putting like this side on the griddles,
08:44just so everything gets nice and crispy.
08:46I think they do taste better that way.
08:48It's not for me.
08:52Something about the cheese and the hot dog mixing together feels wrong,
08:55because I've never had it.
08:57It feels weird.
08:58So this is the bacon and cheese hot dog.
09:03Looks pretty good to me, but I'm not really familiar with hot dogs.
09:07I think in general, in Italy, we don't really have that many.
09:10Like definitely burgers are more popular.
09:12Yeah, maybe with sauce sauce it would be a bit better.
09:18In the US, we have two exclusive milkshake options,
09:21the Oreo creme and the double stuff, which I am very excited about.
09:25I love Oreos and Oreo milkshakes are objectively the best milkshake.
09:29Let's try the Oreo creme first.
09:31So this is just like the filling of the Oreos, essentially.
09:34Okay, give it a good swirl.
09:36And it is creme and not cream.
09:38That is literally so good.
09:43You're actually drinking the creme inside of an Oreo.
09:47Next is double stuff.
09:48So I assume this has the creme and also a bunch of Oreo pieces in it.
09:55Oh my god, this is the best one.
09:56At Five Guys, you can actually add bacon to any of their milkshake flavors.
10:00This is a vanilla bacon.
10:02I just feel like vanilla seemed like the easiest thing to pair with the bacon.
10:06I've never tried this before, but let's see.
10:10It tastes like vanilla and bacon.
10:12I'm just trying to decide mentally if that's like something I should have eaten.
10:17We thought we had one exclusives in the milkshake department in Italy.
10:22On their website, it still states that there is a coffee milkshake that you can order.
10:27We did order it, but then when we got to the store to collect it,
10:31turns out it's been discontinued and it's been years.
10:34They haven't done it, so please update your website, Five Guys.
10:38We still got a bacon milkshake and then weirdly on the website,
10:43also it lets you add every single flavor.
10:47So we got a milkshake with absolutely everything that was available.
10:52What's in here?
10:52There is Oreos, banana, strawberry.
10:55There's like so many different things that just in my mind,
11:00they don't really work together.
11:03I think there's just too many things to even make out what stuff is.
11:07To be honest, it's not too bad.
11:08Now we've got the bacon milkshake.
11:11Mixing bacon with milk, it does sound a bit ridiculous.
11:17I might be disappointed though, because I don't really taste the bacon much.
11:20We also have some drink options you can only get in the US.
11:23Simply Lemonade, Root Beer, and Dr. Pepper.
11:25Do Italians like root beer?
11:27That's what I would love to know.
11:28You know what that is, I'm sure they do.
11:31If you're Italian from Italy, comment down below and tell me if you know what Rubiri is,
11:36one, and two, do you actually think it's good?
11:38Because here people love it.
11:40And here are all the drinks that you can only find in Italy.
11:43We've got Fanta Orange, sparkling water, and then four beers.
11:50So let's talk about prices now.
11:52In Italy, at Five Guys, a cheeseburger will cost you 13 euros and 45 cents.
11:57Translated to dollars, that is 14 dollars and 82 cents.
12:02So for comparison, at McDonald's you can get a cheeseburger for 2 euros.
12:07So yeah, for the same price, 13 point something euros.
12:10You could get six of these at the other chain.
12:14That's maybe too cheap, but 13 euros for a burger in tin foil, just sort of all squished together.
12:21Still at a fast food chain, that's way, way over what I would pay.
12:27In the US, a cheeseburger will cost you 11 dollars and 79 cents or 10 euros and 70 cents.
12:33That is a 26% decrease in price.
12:36So Five Guys is doing this thing where all of their food is fresh and made to order.
12:42They're trying to kind of raise the standard of what fast food could be.
12:47I think that's why their prices are on the higher end, although I don't know if that's fully justified,
12:53because I can say that I've had better, cheaper burgers.
12:57I think that's allowed.
12:58And to make that a meal, so with regular fries and a drink,
13:03that will cost you 23 euros and 20 cents, which in dollars is 25 dollars and 57 cents.
13:11Again, so overpriced, like 23 euros for all this.
13:16And I still don't even have a plate.
13:20It's just a lot, a lot.
13:22To make it a meal with regular fries and a regular drink,
13:25it will cost you 21 dollars and 47 cents or 19 euros and 48 cents.
13:33I, it's just not making sense to me.
13:3721 dollars for a fast food burger fries and drink?
13:41No, absolutely not.
13:45Let's take a look at some of the basic ingredients at Five Guys Italy.
13:49In Italy, the burger itself is 100% ground beef.
13:53And in the US, a burger actually contains 80-20 USDA ground chuck.
13:58If you want to add cheese to your burger though, here's everything that's in the cheese.
14:03Five Guys cheese in the US contains all of these ingredients.
14:07Let's look at the bun.
14:08It contains water, salt, sugar, vegetable shortening, milk, eggs, bleached bread flour, yeast and sesame seeds.
14:15So in Italy, the bun has a total of 11 ingredients.
14:19That's two more than the US.
14:21The additional ingredients are calcium carbonate and spirit vinegar.
14:26The only difference in the hot dogs is some of the ingredients to make the pink coloring.
14:30We love dyeing our food here.
14:32The ingredients for the fries are really simple.
14:34It's just potatoes, refined peanut oil and salt.
14:37If you go to a Five Guys, they have this little board that tells you where your potatoes are coming from
14:42that day and ours came from St. Anthony, Idaho.
14:46And the fries of Five Guys are very simple.
14:48They are potatoes, peanut oil and salt.
14:52It's the first thing that I see something cooked with peanut oil.
14:55Let's see, do they taste like peanuts at all?
14:59Actually, they taste quite potato-y.
15:02They taste quite nice.
15:04Yeah, maybe it's the peanut oil after all.
15:06In the US, a cheeseburger that has a bun, two patties, two pieces of cheese and no toppings
15:13comes out to about 984 calories.
15:16The total fat comes out to about 55 grams, carbs 39 grams, sugar 8 grams and sodium 1050 milligrams.
15:25In Italy, a regular cheeseburger contains 756 calories of which 45 grams are total fat,
15:3440 grams are carbs, 8 grams are sugar and 908 milligrams are sodium.
15:43And if you make that a meal, you can add fries and they contain 1,122 calories,
15:50then 66 grams of fat, 120 grams of carbs, 1.7 grams of sugar and 716 milligrams of sodium.
16:01Our regular fries are 953 calories, 41 grams of fat, 131 grams of carbs, 4 grams of sugar and 962
16:12milligrams of sodium.
16:13And a chocolate milkshake contains 874 calories, then 39 grams of fat, 121 grams of carbs,
16:24108 grams of carbs, 108 grams of sugar and 408 milligrams of sodium.
16:31And a chocolate milkshake is 830 calories, 36 grams of fat, 116 grams of carbs, 107 grams of sugar and 400
16:40milligrams of sodium.
16:41So the total for a meal that includes a cheeseburger, regular fries and the milkshake is 2,752 calories,
16:50of which 150 grams are total fat, then 281 grams carbs, 118 grams of sugar and 2,032 milligrams of sodium.
17:04Bringing the total to 2,767 calories, 132 grams of total fat, 286 grams of carbs, 119 grams of sugar and
17:142,412 milligrams of sodium.
17:18Well, the numbers for the fries are actually based on what is stated on the website.
17:23And we got basically half of what is stated there.
17:27So if you want to make this a little bit more accurate, you should have the nutrition numbers as well.
17:34Five Guys first opened in Italy in 2018 in Milan, just behind the Duomo.
17:42So a very touristic location.
17:44And then in 2021, after a bit of a COVID break, it opened in Rome.
17:49And there are now another four locations in Milan.
17:53I think, well, starting with Milan, it's a very smart choice.
17:56Obviously, it's the most international city.
18:00There's a lot of tourists, like fashion capital of Italy, a lot of offices, a lot of foreigners as well here,
18:10which is maybe the reason why they open here.
18:13I know Five Guys is available in a lot of places, but something about the branding
18:17and the way the food is presented feels very East Coast to me.
18:20I think it's because the fries remind me of boardwalk fries that you'd get down at the Jersey Shore.
18:26It's a little weird because some stuff has the Five Guys logo on it and you can tell where it's from.
18:31Other stuff like the fries and the burgers just come in regular foil, a regular unmarked cup.
18:36So it's like, it's not a lot of brand recognition, at least for me.
18:41I've never even seen a Five Guys advertisement.
18:43I've never seen a commercial.
18:44I've never gotten an ad.
18:46Once you take like this cup away, you probably wouldn't know where I got this food from.
18:50Because their burgers are made to order, it does take longer for you to get your order.
18:54I've waited like at least 10 minutes for my order out of Five Guys before.
19:00So it's not like the fastest fast food option, but the food is as fresh as it can be.
19:05It kind of gives me the feeling of food you'd get at a concession stand,
19:09at like a local baseball game, at a school or something.
19:13It's definitely got its own thing going on.
19:17Here are all the ingredients in the Five Guys buns.
19:20In the Five Guys buns.
19:22All five of their buns.
19:24Jesus.
19:25Okay.
