00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Derek Eustonbetts and this is People on the Street.
00:04I'm just about to go down into the city to ask people on the street of Manchester a very, very important question.
00:09And that is, is Manchester England's second city?
00:13Now, typically Birmingham has been known as that place, mainly due to its massive population.
00:19But here in Manchester, we think we're making a real claim for it.
00:22Between the cultural identity of the city to some of the communities that feel like part of the furniture here now,
00:27and some of the business developments that have been going on over the last couple of years too.
00:31We really think we're making a push. So I want to go out into the streets of Manchester and ask people their perspective.
00:36Is Manchester England's second city? And if not, what does it need to do to get there?
00:40Manchester is England's first city. Yeah, there we go.
00:44I think Manchester should be the first city. It's way better than London.
00:48It just feels nicer. London is so, like, rude.
00:52People push past you. Everyone's busy. Everyone doesn't have the time of day for you.
00:57I feel like Manchester is just such a better vibe. People are nicer, slower. So, in a nutshell.
01:03After London, for sure. I think it's definitely got that hustle and bustle.
01:07It's got a lot of opportunity. It's fun and exciting. And it's growing all the time.
01:14As someone who lived near construction, that just was going on days and days and days.
01:19You just see it everywhere. It's just like, I think it's definitely a hotspot.
01:22Especially when you talked about it, even outside of the UK, people know what we're talking about.
01:26I'd still say it's probably the second city. A lot of going more in a logical sense.
01:31A lot more companies and offices are moving up here, predominantly because of rent and everything.
01:36But I see a lot more people moving up here. I've lived in London myself as well.
01:40And I would probably say it's the second city. I know Birmingham is, but I think sheerly just because of population.
01:46Birmingham? I really know not a lot about Birmingham.
01:50Well, Manchester's got Oasis, Birmingham's got Black Sabbath, so it depends what you're into.
01:56I'd say it's a bit of everything that Manchester is the second city.
02:00You talk to tourists and they either come to London or they come to Manchester.
02:03Unless they're going to a countryside or something. But city-wise, not trying to be too harsh to Birmingham.
02:08But there's just not much going on there. I think it's definitely to do with culture in my eyes.
02:12Yeah, I'd say culture. Yeah, culture and just...
02:17Vibes.
02:18I think it being quite an artsy creative space as well.
02:21You know, obviously creates a lot of talk online as well.
02:24So, things like what you're doing probably.
02:27It's definitely created a name for the city itself.
02:30Also the history, I'd say. It's got, you know, being an industrial city before.
02:35It's definitely got reputation. A good one, I'd say.
02:38Manchester, you have the two biggest football clubs in the world.
02:41You have incredible music here with all the massive bands.
02:44Obviously, Oasis coming back has been huge as well.
02:47Even the venues like Warehouse Projects, stuff they probably don't like.
02:52Diecast, Great Island, I just feel like they've got so much more potential to hold a bigger amount of people.
02:58A good one.
02:59I hope you're enjoying the world...
03:00I think it's lovely, isn't it?
03:01I don't know if you want to come back to our group wouldn't be quite an hour or two.
03:02I think we are very happy.
03:03We do know if you don't like that.
03:04Get out of here for you and you're not happy.
