00:00:00G'day guys, just a quick note to say g'day and sorry I can't be there in Austin, Texas.
00:00:06It's great to see the V8 supercars here in the USA.
00:00:09I'm sure the fans are going to love it.
00:00:11It's been a thrilling season so far too.
00:00:13Lots of different winners, the car of the future in mixed formats.
00:00:16It's really spiced up the action, it's been great to watch.
00:00:19But finally I just want to say thank you to all the fans down home for all their support.
00:00:23It's been an amazing ride for me here over the last 8 years.
00:00:26I'm really enjoying it and the ride's still going strong.
00:00:29See you soon.
00:00:31Yeah, two-time V8 supercar champion, dual Barry Sheen medalist as well.
00:00:35Marcus Ambrose sending us a message who's having a big weekend in Charlotte
00:00:40with the all-star performance for the NASCAR.
00:00:43And there's a great connection across the board here, Mark Scaife,
00:00:46because of course former teammate Russell Ingle is now sporting the Stanley look this weekend
00:00:52in honour of his mate for the DeWalt Stanley Ford Fusion.
00:00:55So a wonderful mix of old and new, and we wish Marcus all the best this weekend.
00:01:00Wow, what a day we have had.
00:01:02By the way, what about Marcus Ambrose, John Bauer look with the beard going?
00:01:04Yeah, exactly. I hope Russell doesn't have one of those for the weekend.
00:01:07What a start we've had to the Austin 400.
00:01:10It just got underway like a firecracker.
00:01:13As expected, the V8 supercars, well, they didn't mess around in terms of getting into it, did they?
00:01:17Fabian Coulthard didn't get a good start.
00:01:19And before you know it, he had lost the lead to Jamie Winkup.
00:01:22And before we knew it, Scaifey, we had ourselves a safety car.
00:01:25Well, and what drama that was there for young Scott McLaughlin.
00:01:28He's had such a great start to the year, massive damage to the left-hand rear of that car.
00:01:32There was contact, you can see that there, that's on board now.
00:01:35That was with Todd Kelly.
00:01:36There'll be an investigation about that.
00:01:38There'll be about 25 investigations out of all of this.
00:01:40And there was a massive amount of drama.
00:01:43This fast section, Matt, the cars looked unbelievably good.
00:01:46And at that stage, we had the safety car, as you said, a restart.
00:01:50The two Mercedes-Benz incidents within a couple of laps.
00:01:53And then a really good battle with Craig Lowens down the inside of Fabian Coulthard.
00:01:58There'll be some issues around that after the race again.
00:02:01And more action.
00:02:03Fabian was right in the heat of this for most of the race.
00:02:06Yeah, he sure was.
00:02:07And he's making a habit, Fabian Coulthard, of holding his own.
00:02:10He's scored his first championship race wins this season.
00:02:14So he's out there to mix it up this year.
00:02:16They've got a handle on the car of the future, so they're comfortable from the word go.
00:02:19And talk about comfortable.
00:02:21Jonathan Webb is having a really good weekend already,
00:02:23although he lost out in that exchange in pit lane.
00:02:25And then Mark Winterbottom locks it up at the top of the hill.
00:02:28Garth Tander takes pure advantage.
00:02:30It says, I'll just dive in there.
00:02:31Thank you very much.
00:02:32And before you knew it, Jamie Wincup.
00:02:35I mean, how do you stop a bloke like this when he's in this kind of form?
00:02:38Well, you can't.
00:02:39I mean, he is the benchmark guy.
00:02:40I mean, not only do we see him week in, week out, put in these sorts of performances,
00:02:45but he's the sort of guy, Matt, that when he's at the front, he's a very, very good leader.
00:02:49He's Brock-esque when he does that.
00:02:51Yeah.
00:02:52So a one and two for Red Bull Racing Australia.
00:02:53But as we've mentioned, under investigation car,
00:02:56Triple Eight for the wheels spinning in pit lane.
00:02:58We've sent Larko down there to get the latest from the team boss.
00:03:01Yeah.
00:03:02Thanks, Matty.
00:03:03Roland Dane, we've seen multiple winners this year,
00:03:05and I just think it shows that you guys are right on track when you come to a new circuit.
00:03:08That equalises everything, and you clean up one too.
00:03:10So, first of all, well done.
00:03:11What was the secret?
00:03:12Yeah.
00:03:13It took us a while for the drivers and the engineers to get a head around the circuit yesterday,
00:03:17but then it all clicked and came together,
00:03:19and I think it just is a testament to the depth of talent in the team, frankly,
00:03:23from the drivers through the engineers to the Baltis.
00:03:25I thought your strategy was really good with Craig.
00:03:28It sort of surprised us at first, but gee whiz, he made up a lot of ground,
00:03:31and he's got probably not a bad set of tyres left there.
00:03:33Yeah, he has.
00:03:34But at the end of the day, he couldn't quite get past Jamie on that strategy,
00:03:39but yeah, he made up a lot of time, which he lost earlier on behind Fabian.
00:03:43Spinning wheels, mate.
00:03:44We hear you're under investigation there.
00:03:46Have you got a view?
00:03:47I don't know.
00:03:48Stevie Wonder watching or something?
00:03:49I'm not sure.
00:03:50There was nothing going on from what I could see.
00:03:53Before you go, quick look at the tattoo, mate.
00:03:55Have a look at this.
00:03:56This is quite significant.
00:03:57Tell us what it's about.
00:03:58Look, I thought I'd get...
00:04:00I was with Paul Morris in LA and got a bit carried away
00:04:03and thought I'd celebrate 10 years of Triple Eight in Australia
00:04:06and 100 wins with a bit of art.
00:04:08And that's their logo.
00:04:09Well done.
00:04:10So have a bit of a celebration.
00:04:11There's your bottle right there, mate.
00:04:12Into it.
00:04:13Later.
00:04:14Later.
00:04:15He's inked up, Roland Dane.
00:04:16Can't believe it, can you?
00:04:17All he needs now is some boots and a nice big hat
00:04:19and he'll fit right in here.
00:04:20And Austin, by the way, have you sampled the food in town?
00:04:23It's been very, very good.
00:04:24Just a little bit?
00:04:25Have you had barbecue ribs?
00:04:26Don't start.
00:04:27You've been with me most times.
00:04:29This is the live music capital of the world.
00:04:32One of the mottos here is keep Austin weird.
00:04:34But I've got to tell you, I said at the very top of the show,
00:04:36this is a seriously cool town
00:04:38and you cannot miss when it comes to food.
00:04:41Our drivers love their food.
00:04:43So we sent Will Davison and a couple of mates, Shane Van Gisburgh
00:04:45and his brother Alex Davison,
00:04:47out to the best American barbecue in town,
00:04:49the Salt Lick Barbecue.
00:04:50Check it out.
00:04:57Like most Aussies, I love a good barbie.
00:04:59But here in Texas, they take it to a whole new level.
00:05:02This is the Salt Lick Barbecue
00:05:04and tops the list of things to do while you're here in Austin.
00:05:07It started as a little barbecue stand in 1967
00:05:10and now its mouth-watering menu
00:05:12ranks one of the best in the country.
00:05:17Barbecue is a social gathering.
00:05:19It's a gathering of the clans.
00:05:20Everybody in Texas has those memories
00:05:23of daddy or mother out there cooking the meats
00:05:27and everybody coming up
00:05:28and there's just one big party in the backyard.
00:05:32So this is the main pit.
00:05:35This is the integral part of our barbecuing process.
00:05:38The way we barbecue here is,
00:05:40was handed down from generation to generation
00:05:42since about the 1830s
00:05:44when the first portions of my relatives
00:05:46started moving to Texas.
00:05:47So this sauce, it has about 38 different ingredients in it.
00:05:51And it came from the,
00:05:53it came from around Memphis, Tennessee
00:05:55and Augusta, Georgia, other places.
00:05:58And when it left, I'm sure it didn't have stuff like cayenne pepper
00:06:01and things like that in it.
00:06:02So it's been Texified over all the years.
00:06:04And every generation adds a little something to it.
00:06:07And so then what you do is you take the sauce.
00:06:10And you don't mind if it gets on the fire
00:06:12because that's the smoke that you want.
00:06:14And you just kind of lightly baste it.
00:06:17Just smash it on there.
00:06:19Smash it on there.
00:06:20Smash it on there.
00:06:21That's good.
00:06:22Yeah.
00:06:23Yeah.
00:06:24And just move to the next one.
00:06:25You're doing it fine.
00:06:26You don't want too much.
00:06:27You want to lie.
00:06:28I haven't seen you drive, but you must be a good driver
00:06:30because you're a good saucer.
00:06:31I thought I was a good barbecuer
00:06:33until you just showed me a technical idea.
00:06:36This is where it really caramelizes on the outside.
00:06:41It has a whole lot of flavor.
00:06:44And this is called the burnt end.
00:06:46And so we actually pull these back and save them for people
00:06:49because people actually ask for burnt ends.
00:06:51Really?
00:06:52Yeah.
00:06:53Because it has a different type of flavor.
00:06:55Mmm.
00:06:56Is it really good?
00:06:58That's pretty good.
00:06:59And this is a beef, beef, pork, and garlic sausage.
00:07:04Let me have a pork spare rib.
00:07:08That's what I love.
00:07:10I haven't had breakfast yet.
00:07:12I'm hungry.
00:07:13Yeah.
00:07:14And they're twice as good if you use your fingers.
00:07:17There you go.
00:07:19There's so many great places to barbecue in Central Texas
00:07:26that you need to spend at least a week.
00:07:28My passion for this type of food comes from my father
00:07:32and his father.
00:07:33Hand it down for generations.
00:07:35He did it.
00:07:36He was the guy that cooked for all the family picnics
00:07:39and it came from him and, you know, just built over the years.
00:07:44Mmm.
00:07:46Awesome.
00:07:47Oh.
00:07:48Oh.
00:07:49Yeah, welcome back.
00:08:03So when in Austin, Scafie, you do what the Austinites do.
00:08:05What?
00:08:06You hit the trails.
00:08:07Right.
00:08:08Now this is...
00:08:09So we sent Mauro Engel from SP Tools Racing and Team BOC's Jason Bright.
00:08:14They went out.
00:08:15Just take a look at it.
00:08:16It's absolutely beautiful on the Colorado River.
00:08:18This is about 25 miles north of where we are at McKinney Ruffs Nature Park.
00:08:23And it all looks nice and comfortable.
00:08:24They had a beautiful afternoon.
00:08:26Tour guide Stephanie from Suncrest Farms was there.
00:08:29And then they decided to do this because V8 supercar drivers
00:08:32can never do anything without a challenge.
00:08:35Brian's sort of got a couple here and then he's missed that one.
00:08:39And then watch this for Mauro.
00:08:40He's almost...
00:08:41He's almost ended up with a pack.
00:08:45I don't know how they both ended up driving, by the way,
00:08:48because that was rather uncomfortable.
00:08:49That's not good.
00:08:50And the one thing that I really feel for is the horse.
00:08:52That's not good.
00:08:53And Jason Bright's quite big.
00:08:55Yeah.
00:08:56Well, Brighty's in pit lane with Neil Crompton.
00:08:58Now, Crompo, Brighty's had, I think, just a little bit of experience riding a horse,
00:09:02but at least he's had a lot of experience driving here in the USA.
00:09:06He certainly has.
00:09:07But I've got a couple of significant questions to run past Jason Bright,
00:09:10who's just in the middle of the debrief process at the moment.
00:09:13Brighty, clearly, when you were a young bloke,
00:09:15you didn't have one of those wooden ponies that you rode when you were a toddler
00:09:17because you're no John Wayne, from what I just saw.
00:09:20Yeah.
00:09:21Actually, I learned one thing when I was horse riding.
00:09:22Don't get there last,
00:09:23because you get the ugliest helmet and the craziest horse.
00:09:26So, yeah, if I learned one thing, that was it.
00:09:28Matt was just talking about the fact that this is a bit of a homecoming for you
00:09:31in many respects because you've done a lot of racing here in the US.
00:09:34Formula Ford 2000 successfully, runner-up in that championship.
00:09:37A lot of running in Indy Lights with Bob Doricott.
00:09:39And then, of course, you had a run in the sports car at Sebring as well
00:09:42in the Aston Martins, so this must be very comfortable for you.
00:09:44Well, it doesn't look comfortable, that race.
00:09:46But, no, it is great over here.
00:09:48I think one of the differences with those days is you used to do a lot of testing
00:09:51and, you know, I got to drive on a lot of different tracks over here
00:09:54and I had a lot of good times and drove for good teams.
00:09:57So, you know, it was a great experience and something that, you know,
00:10:01you sort of learned from your whole career.
00:10:03I know that you're frustrated with the result then,
00:10:05but you ran the long job and you got all the way up to 12th position
00:10:09after qualifying further back and you only basically got on your new tyres
00:10:12at the very end and you ended up with the fastest lap,
00:10:14which makes you the lap record holder, by the way.
00:10:15Absolutely.
00:10:16I don't know how long it'll last, but, yeah, first one out of the gate.
00:10:19But, you know, the car was all right.
00:10:21We got a bump there with Premat and Reynolds.
00:10:24Reynolds seemed to run into Alex and pushed him into me.
00:10:27So it bent the steering.
00:10:28We were pretty wobbly the first couple of laps,
00:10:30so I made a bar adjustment and think we were probably wrong
00:10:32for a long period there.
00:10:34And when we came out on good tyres at the end of the bars were right,
00:10:37the car had pretty good speed.
00:10:38Jase, have fun in race 14.
00:10:40There's a bloke over the back with a sign that says
00:10:41something about riding lessons, so go get them.
00:10:43I'll be there.
00:10:45Thank you to Jason Bright and to Krompe.
00:10:48Got some breaking news out of Pit Lane here.
00:10:50The investigation, wheel-spinning investigation,
00:10:52in Pit Lane during race 13 against car 888 of Craig Lowndes
00:10:56has been dropped, so the standings are confirmed
00:10:59and it means that they will keep that one-two finish.
00:11:02And what about this man, Jamie Wincup,
00:11:04comes into this event winning 16 out of the 24 races
00:11:08that we've had overseas since 2008.
00:11:10Now make it 17 out of 25.
00:11:12The bad news for the rest of the field,
00:11:14he will start the next race from pole position.
00:11:17We're going to take a break, but don't miss it afterwards.
00:11:19We've got a hilarious story when we sent some of the drivers,
00:11:22David Reynolds I'm talking about, out to Alan's Boots store.
00:11:25Stick around.
00:11:42In the state of Texas, boots and hats are a true mark of a man,
00:11:56and in most cases, bigger the better.
00:11:58So if you're ever visiting Austin, Texas,
00:12:00there's only one place to come to fulfill your cowboy needs,
00:12:03and that's right here at Alan's Boots.
00:12:05Hi y'all, I'm Dylan, welcome to Alan's Boots.
00:12:10We have the biggest selection in the world.
00:12:12We're here to set you up with a few outfits in a man cave.
00:12:15Hello.
00:12:16Hello, let's go.
00:12:25I'm in, youtube.
00:12:28Hello, ladies.
00:12:30Oh, that's a casual job.
00:12:31Hey, that's alright.
00:12:32Hey.
00:12:34Good?
00:12:38Howdy.
00:12:40Good stuff.
00:12:41Oh, man.
00:12:42Hey.
00:12:43Holy moly.
00:12:44No way.
00:12:45Yeah.
00:12:46Yeah!
00:12:48Yeah!
00:12:54Holy moly!
00:12:56No way!
00:13:02Yeah!
00:13:10Better?
00:13:12I'm open to business.
00:13:14Oh, back in the room?
00:13:16Yeah.
00:13:26Ginger does it as well.
00:13:28He suggested that.
00:13:38That's hard.
00:13:40Allens is an institution here in Austin and Tim Slade, Craig Lowndes and David Reynolds go up there and do that.
00:13:46Get in touch with their inner cowboy, but I think Davey had a little bit too much fun getting in touch with his feminine side.
00:13:52I think you may have. Now, Neil Crompton just made the John Wayne gag with Jason Bright.
00:13:56There's no John Wayne amongst those three.
00:13:58Barrettes, please get David to explain his actions.
00:14:02Uh, Matty, I really don't know what to say.
00:14:04Uh, Davinda, uh, David, what...
00:14:06That was quite an experience. Daphne?
00:14:08Daphne, yeah. My nickname's Daphne.
00:14:10Um...
00:14:12What do I say? What do you want me to say?
00:14:14Well, I don't think too many cowboys go in as cowboys come out as cowgirls. That was just a little bit unusual.
00:14:18Yeah, the problem is it was my idea, too, to put on the dress.
00:14:22And I even asked for chicken fillets.
00:14:24Did you enjoy your time in there apart from the dress, the hats, the boots, the buckles? It's very Austin.
00:14:30Uh, Alan's, Alan's boots, it's a great, great show.
00:14:32If you've got to get yourself down there and check it out, it's unreal.
00:14:34Like, you feel like a real cowboy walking in there.
00:14:37You look like one apart from the dress.
00:14:38Yeah, I sure do, thanks.
00:14:40Now, just on a serious note, a quick recovery now for you.
00:14:42Physically, how do you feel after that?
00:14:44How draining has that been, that last race?
00:14:46Mate, I can't believe I've got to do that again.
00:14:48My cool suit, um, because we ran it...
00:14:50Got it.
00:14:52That's live TV.
00:14:54Um, thanks for that.
00:14:56Because my cool suit was, because it failed at the end,
00:14:58it was pumping 45 degrees centigrade water through me.
00:15:01So, like, I do Bikram yoga, but I'm not prepared for that.
00:15:05You might have needed that dress.
00:15:07So, how damaging is that on the body now?
00:15:10Now, I've dragged you out from the cool room out the back.
00:15:12You've been in, virtually in ice there, just trying to recover.
00:15:15Do you feel refreshed?
00:15:17No, not at all.
00:15:18Um, like I said, I can't believe I've got to do that again.
00:15:21But, for some reason, your body will just get used to it,
00:15:23and then, you know, this race will be fine.
00:15:25It might be a bit cooler.
00:15:26Last time it was very hot out there.
00:15:28Like, I was screaming with about ten laps to go.
00:15:30Get me out, get me out.
00:15:32Now, Dave, we know how good you can be.
00:15:34We know you can work your way to the front end.
00:15:36Starting from P15, this race, this is a tough one.
00:15:39Yeah, it has been tough lately.
00:15:41Qualifying hasn't been my strong point.
00:15:43Well, as last year, like, I was always qualifying the top five, no drama.
00:15:46But this year, I'm struggling for a bit, but racing a lot better.
00:15:49I think we're just setting our car up a bit, um, a bit, not as aggressive as we were last year.
00:15:55So, I think we need to go back, back to the workshop, and I've just got to call.
00:15:58I've got to go.
00:15:59You've got to go, mate.
00:16:00Appreciate that.
00:16:01All the very best, and you look much better in a race suit.
00:16:02Good luck.
00:16:03Thanks, boys.
00:16:04There you go.
00:16:05Well done, Barrett.
00:16:06So, I reckon probably a size 10 in the boots.
00:16:08What do you reckon?
00:16:09An 8 in the dress?
00:16:10Oh, it might be a 6 the way he's going.
00:16:12He just lost some weight.
00:16:13He keeps sweating it out.
00:16:14Exactly.
00:16:15You know, when I got to the circuit early this morning, the first bloke that bailed me up
00:16:18had just driven 21 hours from Miami to get here.
00:16:22He did it nonstop.
00:16:23He was bouncing around.
00:16:24He could not wait to be part of it.
00:16:26We've got folk here from WA.
00:16:27I've met people from Dubbo, from Canberra, from Brisbane, a guy from Virginia.
00:16:32They have come en masse to check out the V8 supercars.
00:16:35And we've got one more race coming this afternoon with Jamie Winkup to start on pole position.
00:16:39Wherever you're watching around Australia on seven sport around the world or around the country here in the USA on speed, welcome back to circuit
00:16:44at the Americas Austin, Texas.
00:16:45I'm Matt White alongside Neil Crompton and Mark Scaife.
00:16:50wherever you're watching around australia on seven sport around the world or
00:17:04around the country here in the usa on speed welcome back to circuit at the america's austin
00:17:10texas i'm matt white alongside neil crompton and mark scaife as we get ready for race two today
00:17:16which will be race 14 of the championship remember they have already done the qualifier for this one
00:17:21win cup will start on pole this is our location the fifth event of 2013. and speaking metrically
00:17:273.68 kilometers or imperial 2.28 miles 20 turns in fact it's turned out the case that there are
00:17:34more passing opportunities than we thought when we looked at this on paper we saw a great race
00:17:39number 13 it's got an average speed this racetrack of about uh 140 kilometers an hour top speed of
00:17:45240 kilometers an hour and so far so good for circuit of the americas and v8 supercars
00:17:50and neil we've been talking a lot this weekend about tire manager and tire management sorry let me tell
00:17:56you why we babble on about that because it's such a critical part of the weekend let's have a look
00:18:01if you look at the layout of the total weekend from the moment we arrive here we've got practice one
00:18:06two three and four we've got qualifying one and two three and four we've got race one two three and four
00:18:11now typically when you arrive at a circuit you'll use old tires to get around have a bit of a look
00:18:16around well i can tell you it's not efficient to freight or nor are you allowed to freight used
00:18:21tires to the other side of the world you just wouldn't do that so you've got to use your allocation
00:18:24from seven sets of tires now you've only got to work out 12 sessions there is there seven sets of
00:18:30tires just doesn't cut it so that's why you're seeing all this quirky tire management going on now
00:18:35the race is pretty simple they're 27 laps 100 k's and you must pit you must put on a minimum of two
00:18:41tires you can put four if you like the reason we're seeing people only put two on is because of all of
00:18:46this now you have to pit post lap 10 and that's to save the kerfuffle everyone will dive in earlier if
00:18:53they can and what you saw typically is everyone dived in just in around here and they do that so they
00:18:59can't get undercut they get in they get their new tires on they get out and cut out some fast laps
00:19:04get ahead of their competitors now there's one other little thing i just want to rub out here
00:19:08and show you when you look at the circuit if i can just quickly draw a piece of circuit if we call this
00:19:14the corner a couple of corners coming onto the straight there's our main straight there the entry
00:19:21to the pit lanes in here goes like this there's our pits there we go so cars this is our pit in here
00:19:29our cars blaze around here and onto the main straight you wonder why a team like triple eight
00:19:35sometimes win and they always get the little things right well when we come to a pit we know we've got
00:19:40to hit the speed limiter the 40k sign is actually right up there not around here somewhere so this
00:19:46tiny little bit when you peel off you this tiny little bit of roadway here you could possibly pick
00:19:51up two three or four tenths if you get that right i was watching the team red bull guys let me tell you
00:19:57they got that right and the other one to watch they've obviously thought about this whole we're
00:20:01going to put two tires on have a look in this next race compared to the other teams in pit lane
00:20:06how their pit men work just doing the two tires and two or three tenths here two or three tenths
00:20:11there doesn't sound like much neil just told you 240 kilometers an hour down the straight
00:20:16two three four five six tenths work out the distance
00:20:19the atmosphere here on the grid is just fantastic incredible crowd down here just soaking all in and
00:20:25enjoying the atmosphere it was a tough first race here at austin for shane van gisberg and
00:20:30they checked the tires while the cars were under park firma and that put him down the rear of the
00:20:33grid but now he's on the second row for this race shane uh tough in the first race but this is a lot
00:20:38better spot to be starting from i can see the lights from this one yeah that was uh race 13 it was then
00:20:44so it's quite an unlucky one for us but uh car was fast i think we set one of the fastest laps and
00:20:49uh you know now we're up the front hopefully we can run with the front guys i'll be stoked
00:20:53you've got those two quick red bulls ahead of you shane all the very best enjoy it
00:20:56cheers man
00:20:57so shane van gisberg in there second row of the grid and uh i'll just bring you back for a bit of a
00:21:01wonder down the grid just on the back of the car here the tour de cure logo you remember i was missing
00:21:05in perth riding that across australia we raised about 2.5 million dollars for cancer research
00:21:10john o webb came on the ride for a few days and they're great supporters of tour de cure so it's great
00:21:15to see the logo up on the car and being carried here to the united states uh out on the grid
00:21:19well it is just chock-a-block shoulder to shoulder at the moment and rightly so a great chance to get
00:21:24in here to feel the atmosphere to enjoy it with people to get close to the cars and the drives it's
00:21:29something very unique about this sport the access to drivers and cars and everyone down here enjoying
00:21:34it and having a pretty good day including gary rogers g'day gary but we want to get down and have
00:21:38a chat to his man young scotty mclaughlin who has done an awesome job so far this year and scotty's
00:21:44just belted in ready to go we might just see we pinch a quick word with scotty scotty uh been a
00:21:51busy year for you it's been a bit of an up and down weekend so far looking for some better fortune in
00:21:55race 14. yeah i don't know what happened there i don't even know who hit me but uh yeah a bit
00:22:00unfortunate but that's racing got on with it had a bit of fun i'm loving the circuit of americas and
00:22:05uh loving being over america for the first time so you use one word there that i think underlines
00:22:09your year fun all the way through this this incredible season you've just had a big smile
00:22:13on your face and you're having a great time well there's uh there's 28 seats here and i've got one
00:22:19of them and you know there's like heaps of people in australia who want this seat and uh i'm just so
00:22:24glad to be here and live in the dream i'm having so much fun well you've really made the most of it
00:22:28and you've overachieved well done scott keep it rolling today mate all the best yes thank you
00:22:31not only has he got a seat he's also got a place in the v8 supercar record books as the youngest
00:22:37ever race winner in our category so we're gearing up now for the final race of day one of the austin 400
00:22:44one of the standout features of this circuit that's the observation tower 77 meters or 251 feet
00:22:57rises above the air 419 stairs will take you there if the lift is not working 419
00:23:04i only know because somebody told me i didn't go and count them
00:23:08mark barretta was up there earlier and uh just said it was simply amazing view you can see the
00:23:17city limits if you like austin city limits there you go and look down right around the circuit a glass
00:23:23bottom as well so you can see right underneath you russell ingall known in our parts as the enforcer
00:23:29he's been around a hell of a long time he's now 49 years of age and this will be his 519th race and
00:23:36on the flip side to that you're looking at the youngest guy in the field chas mostard not the
00:23:41youngest but one of the youngest 21 years of age about to have his fifth race in the case of russell
00:23:46they've got some damage at the back of that car the the boot lid on the car has been damaged which in
00:23:51turn has changed the rear wing angle and they think they've also got a shock absorber problem with the
00:23:56back of that car after some of the contact in the early laps of race 13 is david reynolds we saw the
00:24:02the red face i mean as matt said before i don't think i've seen the guys in such poor physical
00:24:08condition going into a race like this it's it's been very hard to recover and you don't mean that
00:24:14they're unfit you just mean that they've been smashed about i mean they are used to heat i mean
00:24:18we get some pretty heavy heat especially to start the season at the clips all 500 they've raced in
00:24:23bahrain they've raced in abu dhabi as well and they're used to that kind of stuff they are used
00:24:29to cool suits failing on them but there's just something different about this one it's really
00:24:34knocked the guys around
00:24:35let's check out the fusso starting grid for a look at race number 14 of our championship and a great
00:24:47pole position jb we've come the fastest lap of the weekend to achieve that he's 0.25 quicker than his
00:24:51teammate craig louds fabian coulthard went quicker than the pole time he said for the previous race
00:24:56but it wasn't quite enough he'll be alongside van gisberg and then it's jonathan webb and rick
00:24:59kelly outstanding performance in the nissan altima then will davison the first of the four it's position
00:25:04seven from the fast frenchman alex crema from eight then scott mclaughlin the 19 year old kiwi from
00:25:10position number nine and james moffat we just heard from him on the grid again doing another great job
00:25:15inside that top 10. david wall in 11th after finishing top 10 in the previous race tony dalberto
00:25:21and michael caruso side by side david reynolds as we mentioned he's really feeling the effects of
00:25:26this heat and hard work 100 k's around here might go quickly but it's certainly tough on the drivers
00:25:31chas mostard has jason bright who made a mistake in that qualifying session for this race on his flying
00:25:37lap hence the reason why he has qualified so far back two tireless campaigners garth tander and russell
00:25:43lingle both former v8 supercar champions alex davidson with leet holdsworth from erwin racing
00:25:50and the mercedes-benz amg e63 so a category this year is made up of four manufacturers on the grid
00:25:58we've got 15 holden commodores six ford falcons four nissan altimas and three mercs
00:26:05so a number of people trying to also make not only the normal service changes to their car between the
00:26:13races but a lot of little go fast changes as well now look at the back of todd kelly's car i went into
00:26:17that garage and he said to me neil i don't think we're going to get this car out in time because
00:26:21the whole rear bumper assembly and the whole under tray of the car is missing and the first thing he
00:26:26said to me was who who did it he wanted to have a full post-bortem i said oh at the first lap of the
00:26:31race todd there were about 10 guys out there swinging punches and lots of victims but a lot of damage
00:26:35on the back they clearly did get that car out but it'll be semi-undressed now for this race
00:26:39guys just down on pit wall with a man who knows these conditions and how to prepare the drivers
00:26:44for them uh glenn lindsey who is the high performance manager for ford performance racing of course
00:26:49background in formula one glenn just tell us how much race one here today took out of these guys
00:26:54and how do you get them ready to go again a massive amount for for two of our drivers two of which the
00:27:00cool suit failed one of which the drink bottle also failed so uh you know desperate for fluid intake
00:27:06and body temp went through the roof uh we had a couple of drivers just about collapsing uh yeah
00:27:10it was a bit a bit nightmarish at the time to be honest but uh now all good now we've got their
00:27:16fluid volumes back up we've got their body temps down so i got my fingers crossed all right thank you
00:27:22it'll be one grid box empty because david wall has entered pit lane i'm not sure if he's gone straight to
00:27:28his garage but he appeared quickly under our commentary position and uh here he is top right
00:27:35of screen you can see the green number 21 car yeah it hasn't even made it back to the pit box
00:27:43so the winner of the first race was jamie winkup he will start from pole position alongside his team
00:27:48mate they will start how they finished the previous race even though they've already qualified for this
00:27:55one earlier in the day heavy haulage australia mercedes-benz of tim slade got a stars and stripes effect
00:28:04there's amy in charge who will get the jump for the teammates
00:28:15well it's pretty even but shane van gisbergen missed it and these about the third row they're going to be
00:28:22three or four wide heading up here to turn one wind cup holds his ground on the inside jonathan webb
00:28:30sneaks up into third position and now craig lowndes is going to duel with his teammate one of the fastest
00:28:37parts of the circuit it wasn't that wild nice job jamie winkup to stay there on the outside and actually
00:28:45get that done jonathan webb jumped up the third that was opportunistic at turn one rick kelly's gone to
00:28:51fourth shane van gisbergen strong back as a result of that tardy start
00:28:55fabian coulthard really suffered there from grid spot three and has a dive down the inside of van
00:29:02gisbergen in the lockwood entry and done he's grabbed brick kelly as well rip around wide understood
00:29:08couldn't actually get it done he might have got some help along the way
00:29:12i think he got a little bump there from caught that as he did it he couldn't pull up so
00:29:15called that dive down the inside of that gisbergen but when he got there there was a
00:29:19a nissan parked so he gave him a little rub so this is pretty wild in the middle of the field
00:29:24dalberto around the outside with caruso and crema around the outside also was mark
00:29:31winterbottom with their gisberger look at this this is fast turn 17 18. they get it done they
00:29:38got around there very nicely very deep breaking from ben gisberg and he'll be battling to stay on the road
00:29:44and get back to 205 k's on the run into there now davison down the inside he's got a little bit of
00:29:49damage on the right rear of that car as well so we'll recheck the order it's wind cup he's got
00:29:540.3 of a second from lounges then webb then coulta rick kelly will davison there's shane van gisbergen
00:30:01on screen in the vip pet foods entry winterbottom where riding whiz is eighth then moffett and
00:30:06mclaughlin tent that a big lock up for mclaughlin on the run into one it's tander and todd todd kelly
00:30:14having a bit of a battle there todd moves it out on courtney look at this tander and courtney
00:30:18alongside each other the same way as the red bull holdens a couple of laps ago todd didn't realize
00:30:24james was out there he thought he was racing with garb tander it turns out there was another car
00:30:30painted identically also side by side so that was close i held my breath on that one
00:30:36beat some really high quality stuff and that was opening a couple of laps these two guys turned it
00:30:40on at turn two that was unbelievably close and a great job by wickup to get around the outside of
00:30:47lounge he wouldn't have done it with anybody else but his teammate in that circumstance so we're very
00:30:52good up into third rick kelly's still in fear as a consequence of that little bumping jewel and it's
00:31:00really wild in the middle section there you can see russell englewood dave reynolds the rehearsals
00:31:05helped because compared to the first lap of race 13 things are a little calmer here's the replay of
00:31:10the start oh this is close been run over towards the fence he got away with that
00:31:22so that's winter bottom down the inside he almost got his teammate and have a look just up in front
00:31:27there there's plenty of cars again teammates alongside each other in that area
00:31:31so the wilson security racing car as i mentioned went into pit lane at the start so they've had
00:31:38some issue there they've got it out but it hasn't gone very far david wall's day has come to an early
00:31:44end as these two fpr forwards get side by side up over the rise they're trying to hunt down the vip
00:31:51pet foods commodore they've shamed van gisbergen but in doing so they may well take each other out
00:31:57well that the way that unfolded then mark winter bottom on the racetrack ended up with will davidson
00:32:02right out wide on the astroturf so that would have been very close james moffett's in here as well
00:32:07these guys are battling for seventh eighth ninth faster slap of the race jamie wincup he's got a
00:32:12half a second margin over his teammate now loughlin puts some pressure on the norton nissan james moffett
00:32:25this is one of the good design features of this track because if you get down the inside
00:32:29you then got to battle for the next little section so the turn that goes left you can have a dive there
00:32:35but you haven't got the job done unless you can get back in front before the next right-hander
00:32:39so those design features have actually been built into this in terms of raceability very very good
00:32:44so we've seen the two red bull cars side by side at turn one we've seen the two hrt cars side by
00:32:51side we've seen the two fpr cars side by side and now the fujitsu cars are ganging up and manages sorry
00:32:57mate just put a full stop on the david wall car stopped on the side of the circuit it's an oil pressure
00:33:01problem that's why they stopped him in the pit lane they had none thought it might be a sensor the
00:33:05pressure come back up but it's obviously gone again and they had that very same problem yesterday in
00:33:10practice one mark and they had to park the car and then they had a starter motor fail and couldn't
00:33:15start it meanwhile back at the front of the field big pressure again between wincup and lounge
00:33:21replay of the action up into turn one here and watch what happens here to the two pepsi
00:33:25forwards winter bottoms on the inside and it ends up that will has to open the steering and ease
00:33:30himself to the right on the astroturf you'll be in a bit of strife i reckon again that's that's on the
00:33:37verge especially with your teammate if you watch the angle of the middle of that corner and the way the
00:33:42car runs there's just always some controversy about how much room you give the guy on the outside it's
00:33:48called racing room there's always conjecture about it and when the teammates are involved it becomes a bit
00:33:54more intense that gave shane van gisberg and a hurry up as you just saw on that lap he posted the
00:34:01fastest lap 135 0. murrow engel meantime one of the pesadi z63s has come into the pit lane touring along
00:34:09gently there he is up on screen at the moment so he hasn't reached the compulsory pit stop window opening
00:34:15so clearly he's got a damaged tire or some other issue that has forced that car into the pit lane
00:34:19it's got about six inches of toeing on the front right hand corner so that'll do it
00:34:30what's that 150 mil yeah funny neil i was just going to report that in but i think if you can't see that
00:34:35you're not looking got as much dough in his ms had at the bar last time
00:34:43is that why he didn't pay 134.9 now for shane van gisbergen that yellow vip pet foods car number 97
00:34:51is on the charge but jamie winkup is holding off his teammate in the early stages here the second race of
00:34:58the austin 400 circuit in the americas for the aussie v8s are putting on a real root of a show
00:35:11well the weather's nice and clear here in austin but things are starting to brew on the racetrack
00:35:17still more than 20 laps to go they're starting to gang up and it's looking a bit ugly and normally
00:35:23when this happens there is contact like that on todd kelly you got a clip in the rear of the niss
00:35:29announcement which is already looking decidedly second hand by jason bright and this has been
00:35:35replayed across various little battle groups jamie winkup leads by the way and bright locks it up
00:35:43smacks into the front of kelly who now tries to get down towards turn two
00:35:48without rustling the jill when falcon of alex davidson so that'll put a flat spot on jason
00:35:55bright's tire todd kelly getting batted from pillar to post today and he's still in the wars with tony
00:36:00delberto here the whole back of the car's damaged on the nissan now you can also see that the door seal
00:36:05around the passenger's front door on todd's car is flapping in the breeze there as well so he's caught
00:36:11that whack from jason bright meantime that margins continue to tighten lounge and wincup are at it
00:36:18has been trying to apply pressure craig lounge but he hasn't got it done yet this is lee holdsworth
00:36:23there's amazing battle going on back here believe it or not this is for 22nd 23rd
00:36:28and beyond and pie and holdsworth only a couple of minutes ago were in an absolute arm wrestle to the
00:36:34death tomorrow it looks cooler here in the garage but i know you want to be out on the track what happened
00:36:39yeah you're right um look i went down the inside of uh dino dino fiore and um yeah he just turned
00:36:45in and didn't leave any room and uh just snapped the front uh front steering look it's been a tough
00:36:49introduction to v8 supercars for you you you keep chipping away you will get there you are due for
00:36:54some good luck pretty soon yeah absolutely you know um qualifying in perth was obviously quite good
00:36:59unfortunately we've taken a bit of a step backward here but uh not a great day in terms of racing pretty
00:37:03unlucky yeah we know you'll be back up there soon great to have you in the championship morrow yeah cheers
00:37:08it's on out here on the track barrettes lee holdsworth ducks across to the left-hand side
00:37:13of the circuit he's got his erebus motorsport teammate next to him jason bright has been a bit of a
00:37:19battering ram over the last lap or so remember that bright will be carrying some damage on that front
00:37:25left tire we saw a shot of him a moment ago touring the paddock well wide at the race line don't forget
00:37:30they've got a compulsory pit stop to serve here as well and that window opens lap 10 and beyond see what
00:37:37strategy games are played bright got as far as 12th in the last race unhappy with the behavior of the
00:37:42car but as the race progressed he reported that it actually got stronger as the run went on but
00:37:48early on he had a lot of understeer it was quite frustrated with the lack of early pace meantime
00:37:52lowndes has done the fastest split of the first sector tim slade and tim blanchard also at it there
00:37:58you can see that slave was moving right across the road lounge did do the quickest time to the
00:38:03first sector his teammate wing cup did the quickest time to the second sector anything you can do i can
00:38:09do faster he says as he goes in search of a clean sweep on day one of the austin 400
00:38:18this circuit designed by herman tilke who also did the tracks at yas marina bahrain and shanghai so
00:38:24australia v8 supercars have raced it all of those by far this is their most popular after just a few
00:38:32laps todd kelly from a bathys champion been around a long time stepped out and said this is one of the
00:38:37most awesome circuits we've got this is an interesting battle boys believe it or not they're battling for
00:38:43last not that that's the intention but uh only half a lap ago we had two of these three cars off the road
00:38:50tim blanchard's in 17 there he is down the inside now of dean fiore recovering and tim slade's been
00:38:56in this battle as well in car number 47 meantime jamie wincup's done the fastest lap of the race at
00:39:01one minute 34.3 that's nearly as quick as the time that jason bright did on those fresh tires at
00:39:07the end of race number 13 there he is two second margin now over loud so this is what we saw earlier
00:39:12in the day as well this kind of elastic band seesaw going on between them and now the pit windows open
00:39:18and responding immediately coulter because some of what's going on out here also is very dependent
00:39:23on tire management who started on what and what age their tires are some people will preserve depending
00:39:29on where they are to have some better tires for tomorrow and look there's a million permutations
00:39:35that entry is what mark lark was talking about before about how wild it can be through there and how
00:39:40much you can gain if you're willing to push it right up to the speed limit line
00:39:48that was quick that was really quick so tim slade's reporting that he's also got power
00:39:54steer issues so i think they're going to put that car straight in the pit and what that will be
00:40:00is the entire steering system taking so much shock and load from this enormous whack that it takes
00:40:06multiple occasions around here on the curves and the cars are fundamentally pretty strong but they're not
00:40:10designed to fly and crunch that hard look at this as if the back of that car needed more
00:40:15what's that masked man was that car 17 who was it that actually got top then i think the easiest way
00:40:23is to go down and see who's got that damage on the front it's a wicked approach there's a tech pro
00:40:32barrier around that the armco guard rail on approach to uh to that pit lane and i'm really surprised that
00:40:40somebody hasn't hit it there is right there the gray on the left hand side but it's so narrow and
00:40:45it's so quick and it's still you're still climbing to get back up into pit lane and they'll
00:40:49use everything they can every inch of that track that still exists there even though they're coming
00:40:54into pit lane to get the advantage will davison's just come in from position seven
00:40:59and i'm surprised it's oh garth tander sorry you couldn't see that garth tander has just missed
00:41:06the game by nothing that was so close coming into the pit the interesting part is they're still going
00:41:13so fast there's garth tander there but what what we just saw our commentary position is overlooking
00:41:19this pit entry and he was right out sideways so close to the fence but it interests me neil that
00:41:26winkup and lounge can stay like this their tire usage their deterioration is very very good it's
00:41:32the best in the in the industry at the moment and it's been the benchmark for several years
00:41:37often it's delivered race outcomes to them their consistency has been extraordinary and it's not
00:41:42very often that you continue to see quick laps being peeled off at this phase of the race
00:41:46normally the degradation with the tire well and truly uh overrides any reduction of fuel weight
00:41:52in the car so they're continuing to be quick at the moment wind cup lounge separated by 3.3 seconds
00:41:59that gap's opening is russell ingall who's anything but happy with the back end of that car at the
00:42:03moment and he's in a huge battle with his friend james courtney their respective families are disappearing
00:42:10to florida after this event to go and attack disney world in the case of james courtney
00:42:15caris and the kids cadell and zara they're going there for eight days so james is doing the right
00:42:21thing he's bolting to indy for the 500 to hang out with his friend dario friend kitty who's the
00:42:25defending champion and a three-time winner of the indy 500 so he's going to hang there and then go to
00:42:31detroit for the indy car race at belle isle i was talking to look at that that was the image of tanda
00:42:36i haven't seen a car get that close to the arm car there yet so that was a big moment for garth
00:42:40tender on pit entry i reckon the go for james courtney is to get the anz falcon and swoop in
00:42:45on the credit card report it stolen because for eight days he's goldski i actually asked him i said
00:42:51did you say eight so therefore he's going to a car race there's only so much of that you can take
00:43:00so there he is car number 22 james courtney he's been here a couple of times once in parting
00:43:04and then he also came here when he was driving in the japanese gt championship at the california
00:43:09speedway in fontana that was back in the early to mid-2000s before he became a regular face in
00:43:14the v8 supercar championship he's one of four drivers who's had some u.s experience prior to
00:43:22coming here we spoke to jason bribe a little bit earlier on that topic alex davison won here in
00:43:27career a cup in 2002 at indianapolis great performance he's had plenty of international
00:43:33experience and alex crema also drove in the alms at laguna seca a few years ago so a few of the
00:43:38boys have had some exposure to an extraordinary number of the younger guys who've never been to
00:43:42the states full stop so their eyes are wide open here about the passion for motorsports about this
00:43:47facility it's a great playground for those that have got a love for motorsport about this city
00:43:55so that's the look into the final corner here comes lounge
00:43:57people that have pitted already from position two and it's the reverse it was a 3.7 second lead by
00:44:06the time that lounge was called into pit lane jamie wincutt was starting to drop him a bit
00:44:13spinning of the rear wheel please you should hang out there for a little bit longer before i get you
00:44:17this is alex bremer
00:44:27second year in the championship he's doing a much better job this year
00:44:32this man in wi with our last event see you later won his 91st race win and he's now the all-time leader
00:44:43eclipsing our markscape so he's top of the list now he goes to the top of the hill phil hill
00:44:511961 formula one world champion but they filled it in so it's got a dual purpose that only american-born
00:44:57driver to win the championship mario and ready did it in 78 but he wasn't born here and in fact mario
00:45:04andretti cut the first laps at this circuit the official opening of october 21 2012.
00:45:12just done the fastest lap of the race new record of one minute 34.1 there's a little bit more cloud
00:45:17cover out there now that was in race 13 that might be helping possibly rubbering up a little bit as well
00:45:22and it goes back a bit to that entire story that we're talking about in the analysis of the battle
00:45:28between lounges and win cup an interesting thing that aaron noonon unfolded earlier in the week
00:45:35just looking at the stats in the early part of the year but since sand down 2012 craig's only
00:45:41started on the front row twice whereas jamie wincup's been up there 14 times so they race well look at
00:45:49this fabian's having a big go here with lance he might grab him they race brilliantly with that triple
00:45:54eight car and craig lounge and he's been getting some results but when you give your teammate that
00:45:58kind of head start in qualifying and that level of inconsistency really fights and that's what's
00:46:03really been hurting craig lounge so if you can tidy up the whole qualifying argument that will
00:46:09certainly help craig lounge as he tries to grab another championship the guys are coming out of
00:46:13pretty cool autumn conditions at home into a scorching spring here in austin uh tim edwards just
00:46:18wanted to get a feel for your guys i know they were hurting a little bit after our earlier race
00:46:22fatigue isn't an issue for your drivers oh for sure i mean definitely in the first race they
00:46:27struggled a bit we made some improvements to the cool suit a bit more ventilation into the car
00:46:31ice in their drink bottle all that sort of stuff just to try and help them out in this race but yeah
00:46:36she's pretty warm out there she's got a 60 degree cabin temperature thanks mark
00:46:40and barrett's shape and gisberger has just posted the fastest time a lap record 133.59
00:46:47so the first seven drivers in the field yet to stop
00:46:54and they include jamie winkup jonathan webb james moffett michael caruso alex davis and scott high
00:46:59and jason bright who's carrying i think a little bit of tire damage on that front tire at the moment
00:47:04yeah i'm quite fascinated by this red bull strategy neil um just watching wink up still out there because
00:47:10we often talk about the undercut you need to get in get out on your new tires but with guys all putting two
00:47:15tires on you're only seeing half the benefit or maybe a little bit more which around here you're
00:47:19talking 1.82 seconds for a new set of tires so if everyone's putting on two they're not going to
00:47:25bounce ahead so they can afford to stay out there now i'm just wondering well here we are jamie winkup's
00:47:29tires out now so you can expect fairly soon that leaves him a set of rubber he's only going to have
00:47:35to do so what seven eight nine laps good call nice stop there for the techno auto sports group
00:47:43out goes jonathan weep quickly we just saw the track temperature 46 degrees celsius that is
00:47:53massive on the leaders he's made a low ground on cool cloud it's jeff slater in the background
00:48:11speaking to jonathan webb after that pit stop it's a real urgency about that one too there's a lot of
00:48:15calming effect going on between engineers and drivers but that one was let's press on here this is the
00:48:20moment where we've got to land a blow so jonathan webb has been given a real burst of encouragement
00:48:27verbally from his team let's see how he responds it's because those last couple of race meetings
00:48:32for him have been a little bit lacklustre by their own standards so new zealand and western australia
00:48:36didn't really deliver for them a reasonably strong run in fact a very strong run in adelaide is now
00:48:41the leader of the race comes in jamie winkup 12 and a half second lead from james moffett
00:48:46rears only so i need your foot on the uh two feet one on the brakes one on the clutch
00:48:50no spinning of the wheels for me please so you should hang out there for a little bit longer
00:48:54before i get your cross please red bull racing australia making absolutely sure that they managed
00:48:59this wheel spin issue good policy now i don't know if you saw leon's a stop a minute ago if you didn't
00:49:03watch this one carefully we talked about the efficiency i've watched guys down there still using two men
00:49:08to do the stop now watch this whack gun off this guy gets it out of the road this guy on bang done
00:49:15gone see you later fantastic well done that's a great that is a great demonstration of teamwork
00:49:21and the way that they have used the method and the system to do that no fuss is the benchmark at the
00:49:29moment you don't win races just by being fast on the track there's all the other complexity attached to
00:49:37this sport that's one of them interesting that mark dutton fully enunciated the track position
00:49:43there for jamie winkup the reason is you're so far to the left of the road your mirrors in the periphery
00:49:48will not see the cars coming up the hill so he gave him a full-blown commentary all the way
00:49:54to the braking area in the turning point at turn one you will you're in front you're in the lead
00:49:59he gave him a full picture that was a very important strategic message for jamie winkup
00:50:03in managing this race we'll be back with more from austin in just a moment
00:50:11we're now on lap 20 out of 27 for the last race of the day
00:50:18here at the austin 400 they're pretty cool calm and collected at red bull racing australia and why
00:50:23wouldn't you be because they're heading towards another one too they've got this remarkable knack
00:50:27of going to new circuits and just making it work for them in particular jamie winkup he could win
00:50:34two out of two here but he's not done with yet craig lowndes is behind him fabian cool thought so
00:50:39those three guys were on the podium in our first race of the day but shane van gisbergen is still
00:50:47showing some good back-end pace you're riding now with winkup the field is yet to be cleansed by the
00:50:51way michael caruso scott fly and jason bright yet to take their compulsory pit stop
00:51:04this really gives us a great understanding of just how busy the boys are around here
00:51:09so much going on in the cockpit of the cars and remember that this sport is as much about
00:51:15feet and the control of the motor car with the driver's feet as it is the hands so they're very busy
00:51:20in there at the moment all of them this is turn 17 and 18 the fast right hand of slowest point in
00:51:27the middle of the corner is 150 kilometers an hour but they exit the corner at 190 kilometers an hour
00:51:33and get back to just over a little above 205 clicks and here we are into the last couple of corners
00:51:39what we'll do now is have a little look at the margin here just check and take a break keep pushing very hard
00:51:45in turn two keep doing what you're doing mate so even though these guys are fifth fourth and fifth
00:51:51on the timing at the moment remember there are three drivers to stop so that's the margin first to
00:51:54second there's cool effectively in third followed by van gisbergen next is jonathan webb in the darryl lee
00:52:00entry followed by rick kelly in the nissan mark winterbottom in the ford falcon scott mclaughlin here
00:52:07hold the commodore will davis and ford teammate david reynolds forward then it is james moffett
00:52:14alex premer garth tander here in the hold racing team entry his teammate james courtney next followed
00:52:19by russell ingalls so all three cars are from that stable pretty much line astern
00:52:24so who's got what left in terms of tire wear this is mark winterbottom so he's 10th that's a net
00:52:41position of 70 he hasn't won for a year frosty in fact it will be a year to the day tomorrow
00:52:47and his last win at phillip island on may 19 it's his birthday on monday 10 32
00:53:01he had a couple of near misses earlier in the year as well where he thought he was going to
00:53:05win a race particularly down in tasmania at the mark winterbottom so frustrating for him
00:53:10but it's been an incredibly intense season certainly in the first part trying to get a result
00:53:15the difference between hero and zero at the moment in the field is so finite such a tiny margin
00:53:25let's stay with this we'll watch mark winterbottom on the run up to turn one it will stick with it
00:53:30for the entire lap so sit back crank up the audio and watch the 3.68 kilometers of the circuit of the
00:53:36americas here in austin
00:53:46it's awesome isn't it turns three four five and six but we're going to lead that and check in here with
00:54:04fabi kultard and shane van gisberg and those four green boxes tell the story that the giz is making
00:54:11a charge at a podium finish i told you he had some back end speed remember he started the previous race
00:54:18from the back end of the field after his qualifier was excluded for a park ferme infringement so this is
00:54:24the real shane van gisberg and vip pet foods commodore that we're seeing now because this time he started
00:54:32from position four which is effectively where he is and he's putting pressure on fabian two kiwis
00:54:41i've seen evidence of a couple of very different racing lines from both these guys on this lap if you
00:54:46watch carefully they're achieving very similar lap speeds but they're doing it in a totally different
00:54:51way shakes definitely dragging him in ever so slowly i think fabian may have made a little mistake a lap
00:55:00ago because his speed prior to that very similar scott pye now comes in and he stops so there's only michael caruso
00:55:09who hasn't stopped and as you said neil there's a lot of different lines even the way they get into
00:55:15turn two the way they approach this next phase and have a look sometimes the cars are crossed over
00:55:21differently for turn three the next piece is reasonably similar because there's pretty much
00:55:27only one line through this slalom complex there this next section there's not a lot of difference in
00:55:34but there's a lot of difference in what is essentially the slower and trickier in and he
00:55:39might be close enough now down to turn 12. he's almost got the nose in there that was as close as it
00:55:44gets without giving it a bump so this is 12 up to 13. see whether he can do the crisscross there's
00:55:51normally a spot down into 15 where they break and turn he's close enough he'll get down the inside
00:55:58that's the spot there that caught that just covered very nicely and shane changed his line
00:56:03on that lap and the reason he did it is because he had jonathan webb behind so if he exposed the
00:56:07rear of the car to jonathan he would have jammed the number 19 car straight down in there
00:56:13so five laps to go is the message going out on the radio to this group
00:56:17and there's two games going on here for back gisberger at the moment he's got to really look
00:56:22in both directions to cover this one it's a battle for the kiwi pride between fabian
00:56:27courtard and shane van gisberger so this is for fourth fifth and sixth
00:56:36i think it's fascinating to watch the moment of course the lap there where
00:56:40the different lines just leave bigger gaps at certain stages and you think that
00:56:45fabian's got a much better run on him now he takes a look at the uh left hand side
00:56:50and then all of a sudden it's nose to tail again
00:56:57the watching brief is jonathan webb
00:57:00techno autosports team boss
00:57:05and jonathan will be heartened by this because he doesn't have as much v8 supercar experience as
00:57:13caravan 97 shane back there's very bit of kiwi pride there in the crowd
00:57:17so um so all year he's uh just been trying to come to terms with the raw speed that van gisbergen can
00:57:25display we know we've seen that over the years and so he'll be pretty happy about the fact that
00:57:30those two are locked in combat
00:57:33then gisberger almost ran wide at turn 12. that's allowed fabian just to stretch that gap just a little
00:57:42bit you and i went for a long walk and drive around the circle when we first got his gave you oh alex
00:57:48davison's getting a shove along from russell engel and the stanley 66 commodore super cheap auto back
00:57:57i was trying to think of who this circuit would suit and the fast and flying parts of the circuit
00:58:03one of the names that sprung to mind was shane van gisbergen and that's what we're seeing right
00:58:09now in his battle with fabian coulthard i think this one's over no it never is
00:58:16when russell's in it look at this jonathan's having a crack at his teammate here it's going to get
00:58:20interesting and fabian just locked it up a little at the top at the rise so webb had to lock the brake
00:58:26and turn in deeper there in doing that he's actually grabbed the curb and flown the car across it
00:58:30wouldn't have liked that hit it's actually lost some ground in the process 105th v8 supercar start for
00:58:36jonathan webb 177 v8 supercar start for the shane van gisbergen and that little exchange actually
00:58:45that made him put hard on the hook just in the last couple of corners
00:58:52that's what we saw in the previous race race 13 these guys were all battling wing cup was able to
00:58:57sneak away this is a similar thing when the guys are battling behind like that it's taken the heat
00:59:02off fabian quarter he's got a message from my mate back home saying eggs coffee and v8s for
00:59:07breakfast what a way to start the morning that's shane van gisbergen's dad robert he's enjoying the
00:59:12action from inside the bunker at vip imagine having us for breakfast yeah it'll be some indigestion for
00:59:23michael caruso the race leader has now pitted which means that that's everybody ticked off now and that
00:59:29reveals jamie wincup in the corrected lead now he's got a little margin over his teammate craig louds
00:59:36here we go here's michael
00:59:39there's a couple of signatures on the right hand
00:59:41so when michael went to that team he took his engineer steve toddkill with him it was an important
01:00:02thing for him great to maintain that relationship that you've got with a successful combination in
01:00:08the engineering part of the business so he's gone out there with slightly raised tire pressures you
01:00:11heard then and because it's got new tires on the back of it they stiffen up the rear any roll bar on
01:00:16the car because it's got more grip to accept more load in the rear of the car and make the car behave a
01:00:23little differently so we're not far from this one being done and it looks like wind cup's going to get
01:00:27the job done once again how busy is that when mark scape took us for a run earlier in the week
01:00:32in the road car the first time through those s's it was a question of which way does it go
01:00:37because it's literally a sea of red white and blue down there you get that a bit don't you which way did
01:00:42it go and not only that i'm bringing it back to normality for us here the curves that have been
01:00:49installed here to keep the v8 supercars on the circuit are red as well so they're complaining about
01:00:54not being able to see them so here it's such a hard view from the driver's seat to know where
01:01:01the bitumen ends where the curve starts and then we're all that nice stars and stripe colors
01:01:11margin just tightened up a little bit again between wincup and lounge so craig's not letting
01:01:15him off the hook at the moment so but it is a big margin back to fabian pultard who's still got his
01:01:21hands full with van gisbergen and webb this is giving us a really great view watch how busy it
01:01:26looks from here so this is turn two so if we look out the front of the car we'll see what it looks like
01:01:33look down through here
01:01:37and just left and right and left and right and a sea of color and then a shortcut off the grand prix
01:01:43circuit ultimately this down here
01:01:56the boys have now totally come to terms with the rhythm of the track all the nuances of the curbs
01:02:00and here's van gisbergen up the inside of fabian forces the issue gets half the car up there but
01:02:06he's on the wrong side of the car here can he hang on he can't get out too far and wide because
01:02:13webb will dive in there they're still going on with this
01:02:18good pass oh i thought he was up there enough then that is really good quality racing between those two
01:02:24guys very proud new zealanders both one on home soil and that was a really good exchange
01:02:36and that's a very complex part of the road and the duck and the dive and the
01:02:41crisscrossing from van gisberger this is not done guys it'll have to go
01:02:45and this will be very interesting to see whether van gisberger can get down the inside
01:02:51it can't happen here it won't get him into turn one and look at winter bottom and kelly they're
01:02:57battling in the background between sixth and seventh wow rick ran him all the way across to
01:03:04the inside fence there to cover and make sure that he had the inside running to turn one we know they're
01:03:09not quite as strong in a straight line they do need a little bit more but he got away with that
01:03:13the cover actually helped him that'll frustrate winter bottom there's a couple of good battles here
01:03:18because wind cup and lounge is tightened it's down to point six of a second this is the battle going
01:03:22on for third it's far from resolve and the next one in the queues game on as well so you've got kelly
01:03:28and winter bottom at it and this could land anywhere this is the spot he's come up there well this is
01:03:33the spot now baby it's gonna have to block he's gonna have to move it over he did he moved it over
01:03:37that stopped him there web up on the outside that didn't work he's trying everything no demand to get
01:03:44around and look in the background you've still got kelly and winter bottom playing a game back there
01:03:48a little nudge going on dan gisbergen has signaled his intention that he wants to force the issue
01:03:53he runs right out wide he loses the spot in that maneuver ends up on the astroturf he must have lost
01:04:00sight of where web was well i don't think he expected web to fill the fill the gap he dived straight
01:04:06down there and then he couldn't do the crisscross so he's lost a spot from what was a very bold maneuver
01:04:12and meanwhile at the front of the field this man who loves to travel and loves to win does it again
01:04:24right to the end of the line though
01:04:30and mark winter bottom has got by rick kelly who's coughing and splattering across the line
01:04:35here we go what a joke i reckon that's that has run out of fuel i reckon that car's run out of fuel
01:04:42so that means that kelly finishes eighth he was on track with sixth he was in front of winter bottom
01:04:48on the last turn it's all gone away from him a one-two again for red bull racing australia something
01:04:55weird definitely happened to rick kelly because there was actually contact then between kelly and winter bottom
01:04:59and a checkered flag by cedric benson
01:05:06is at the university of texas he was a longhorn in their football program met him the other day
01:05:10he's a he's a unit
01:05:12yeah and drafted by the chicago bears in the nfl i think he had heard yeah 20 off million last year
01:05:19the year before escape money has he got a stereo on in there jamie winker he's popping away
01:05:25this is the man from down under
01:05:34they're playing playing it down to his headphones
01:05:38that's good so there's your one two three isn't fabian koolthar just so impressive the way he's been
01:05:45holding off the challenges this year and jonathan webb sneaks up into fourth spot great effort good dice
01:05:51inside the top 10 so we'll get down to uh nissan motorsport jack daniels racing and find out
01:05:57exactly what happened to rick kelly todd kelly there mid-pack tim blanchard dean fiori in 23rd
01:06:05and david wall and both maro engel did not make the finish
01:06:11so that's a new one
01:06:15the live music capital of the world they're pumping in land down under to jamie winker
01:06:21it was a nice drive again and there were several phases of that race where win cup
01:06:26had to deal with fairly substantial pressure from his teammate lounge who had the eyes on at the
01:06:30beginning there was sort of three chunks of it the beginning the middle and right at the end
01:06:33so no relaxing for win cup battle for thurps fantastic between fabian jonathan and shane that
01:06:41is cool part web and van gisberger and i'd love to know what happened with rick kelly and mark
01:06:45widderbottom was it just a push and shove at the end or was there a little technical issue for rick
01:06:49kelly will try and get to the bottom of that for you standard procedure check the hot tire pressures
01:06:54on the car as they come in and here's the man who's got the job done win number five of this
01:06:58championship season takes his career tally on to 69 and this man looking for three
01:07:05title runs on the trot and career title number five what an achievement that'll be
01:07:12mark dunn was there to talk him through it craig lounge was there to push him on
01:07:22got used to these slick professional performances from this team i said earlier today that when he's
01:07:30leading he drives like brock he's just such a good leader like that he doesn't make mistakes
01:07:36he drives the car right to the limit of its tire adhesion we've said all weekend how hard it is on
01:07:41tires but they have just done an extraordinary job a very very professional performance by jamie winkup today
01:07:51jamie winkup well done two from two here in austin what is it about you and traveling around the
01:07:56world but just works so well i'm not sure but i'll take it though without doubt um yeah obviously uh
01:08:02cars are very good lancy uh lancy stepped up again like he did in brace two at purse so um
01:08:08yeah we had a work cut out there crazy hot over here it looks a bit overcast but uh
01:08:12seriously hot inside the car that race one was probably top five with with heat inside the cabin
01:08:17for sure scapey was just likening your drive to to brocky when brocky was out in front he says
01:08:21when you're out in front you're just so solid you get away with it no one can catch you
01:08:25i don't know about that i thought lancy was going to mow me down but um the car was good
01:08:29i just kept the eyes out the front and dardo uh dardo was measuring the gap for me so i'm very very
01:08:34happy and was that just a little bit of men at work down under as you went around that final lap
01:08:38yeah it was actually yeah we've been planning that for a while we couldn't come up with the technology
01:08:42sounds like you got it we thought it was a bit appropriate over here we'd uh yeah a bit of
01:08:46men at work great to hear it well done jamie two wins well done of course craig lounge awesome
01:08:50performance once again from lounsey uh rock solid mate the good news for you is that takes you now
01:08:55to within 14 points of will davidson in the championship for second spot well that's great
01:08:59obviously uh look you know barrett's i don't know what jamie said it's a bit windy around here it's uh
01:09:03it's been fantastic obviously we again we're still learning the track our cars have been sensational
01:09:08i had a good fight with jamie at that time i had a car to battle with him so uh look you know it's
01:09:11credit to the team to jj we didn't quite have it in race one but yeah definitely had a lot better car
01:09:16and race suit what is it about your team that just works so well you continue to produce these
01:09:20incredible results together well i'm not sure i think that we do work well as a team and i think
01:09:24that's probably the key point that you know after race one there was a short turnaround we both had
01:09:28information we shared we tried to get the cars better than we had in the previous race and they
01:09:32were like for me it was such a much more satisfying race to be able to have a good race with jamie and
01:09:37it's all the credit to him he obviously did a fantastic job he got in and out of the pits we caught
01:09:41him but uh just didn't quite have the pace that we needed want to say go to the kids yeah hello
01:09:46levo and chili thanks for that enjoy it baby and cool thought fabian well done uh you had to fight
01:09:53to hold onto that podium place by that that was tough yeah look uh i felt like i was battling for
01:09:58the lead there for a second but you know look all credit to shane and you know to webby behind me you
01:10:02know it was a good clean fair race and you know there's not a mark on my car there's not a mark on his so
01:10:07you know we were playing pretty fair and it's good to get another podium two in a day is awesome
01:10:11they're both of them just quality drivers at the moment too that was a fantastic duel for us to
01:10:15watch as spectators yeah exactly you know they're on on their form and you know you've got a strike
01:10:19while the iron's hot and you know they're doing a fantastic job so we've got a little bit of work to
01:10:23do you know we've got to make our car a little bit better but our overall lap speed's not too bad
01:10:27we just need to make it you know more consistent uh throughout the run i don't know how you do it
01:10:31and look so cool and collected fabian well done yeah i'm pretty hot under the collar don't worry about
01:10:35that congratulations cheers thank you down here with jonathan webb third place fourth place and uh
01:10:40shane van gisberg and in fifth now i've got to ask you pair that was some great dicing cars were
01:10:45both very very equal um i'm guessing shane you didn't guess that webby was going to dive in there
01:10:50when he did yeah i thought he would but uh we're a long way from home but uh we're still here to race
01:10:54cars we're not here to get it on with spiders so oh it's a good move but uh you know if we'd like
01:10:59fourth i had a good go at fabian but it got hot so oh well it's uh pretty happy after the first race
01:11:04that was terrible looks hot mate just look at all the drivers i mean you're all very fit i can see
01:11:09you're knackered it's everyone's saying this is as tough as it gets yeah yeah you just got no time
01:11:13to rest and my helmet fan fell off so i had none of that but cool suit was working but um mine was
01:11:18fine but yeah but tired when i get out webby it's an interesting dynamic you know we watch even we've
01:11:22seen a bit of it in formula one lately we hate team orders clearly there was no team orders going on
01:11:28here we know that but sometimes we could see both of you probably had the pace to get past coultard
01:11:32you didn't i think that's a little bit disappointing yeah i mean i think that was my first comment to
01:11:36the boys at the radio i guess we we stopped later so i think i had a bit more speed than probably
01:11:41both of them towards the end but being the good teammate that i am i sat back a while thought
01:11:45shane was having a good crack and i thought i'll uh i'll let him try and get it but towards the end
01:11:49i thought he's not going he's not going to get this so i got shane i think one more lap i probably would
01:11:53have got fab as well but that's the way it is yeah and i think for us and everyone at home to just
01:11:57watch that happen clearly there is no team orders it actually looks like he was going wide to duck down
01:12:01back under you said here's an opportunity bugger it and went in there and in fact i think that's
01:12:05quite refreshing yeah exactly as i said i sat back there a little while i thought i'd give him a fair
01:12:10run by that stage a last lap it was all uh all for their own and i wanted that next spot so i took it
01:12:16all right mate great to watch and good to see you guys back up and into it thank you so both techno
01:12:20cars inside the top five three kiwis inside the top ten with fabian coulthard shane van gisbergen and
01:12:26scott mclaughlin this is the championship pitcher now after 14 races so jamie stretches the lead from
01:12:33will davison but craig lounge closes the gap he's moving closer and closer up to second in the title
01:12:39race james courtney in ninth and john o webb moves inside the top ten the podium well it's exactly the
01:12:45same as our first race of the day cars one triple eight and 14. and this is race 14 the 2013 v8 supercars austin
01:12:53400 would you please welcome our first place driver from red bull racing australia jamie wincup
01:13:03in second place from red bull racing australia craig lounge
01:13:09and in third place for lockwood racing fabian coulthard
01:13:15representing our winning team in red bull racing australia is adrian burgess
01:13:19making the presentation of the third place trophy is adam firth director of international business
01:13:28for v8 supercars
01:13:31presenting to second place is danielle eldridge the vice president of corporate partnerships circuit
01:13:37of the americas
01:13:40presenting to the winning team is peter trimble acting ceo v8 supercars
01:13:45and making the presentation of the first place trophy is adam firth director of international
01:13:53business for v8 supercars
01:13:57ladies and gentlemen the 2013 v8 supercars austin 400 race 14 winners
01:14:03so that's now 18 victories away from home for jamie winkup oh that's just nasty and treat the locals like that here
01:14:18but it's a party town
01:14:21told you take a break we'll wrap it all up for you right after this
01:14:31we had a feeling this weekend was going to be
01:14:36a blast and that's exactly what's been delivered on day one this circuit
01:14:41is just so fantastic this driver at the moment as we've seen over the course of the last few
01:14:46years as he's dominated the v8 supercar championship when he hits the top of his game he is unstoppable
01:14:53a repeat effort on the podium for jamie winkup craig lounge and fabian
01:14:58so let's take you back to the start shane van gisburg and got a bad one mark winterbottom went heavy
01:15:03left towards the pit lane wall there and made up a position but it created a bit of drama up that
01:15:08turn one over the hill and jonathan webb from the word go in the darrell lee commodore was really
01:15:15aggressive so david wall had an issue straight away his race did not last one lap
01:15:21midfield scott pie in the ecole commodore and lee holdsworth who threw the first pitch out at the
01:15:31round rock express the local minor league affiliate to the texas rangers the other night said it was
01:15:36one of the most nervous nights of his life well he was in a few battles today that would have made
01:15:40him shake you watch this on approach oh that was todd kelly and then whack that was chas mostard into
01:15:46the back of todd kelly they're using every inch available on the entry to pit lane because they
01:15:52don't have to hit the speed limiter it's a limiter until right there wing cup comes in they do a
01:15:59typically brilliant performance he's serviced and gone before he knows it
01:16:03and that would be the story of his day and craig lowndes was always waiting behind him at the very
01:16:11back end of the race waiting for this to bubble over just a tiny little mistake from shane van
01:16:16gisberg and after putting so much pressure on fellow kiwi fabian coulthard that allowed jonathan
01:16:23webb to go up into fourth and coulthard to hold on to third position as uh jamie wing cup gets another
01:16:29checkered flag waved in front of his face the 69th time he has seen that in the v8 supercar
01:16:35championship the numbers are so impressive in his career he also grabbed a pole position this weekend
01:16:41as you know so 44 career poles and 69 race wins he's well and truly on the roll well down here with
01:16:49rick kelly eighth position and james moffet 10th now guys that's your 10th 10th position in the nissan
01:16:56team now people wouldn't realize that's that's pretty spectacular up front yeah it is actually
01:17:01but i couldn't i can't believe i'm saying this but i'm a little disappointed to finish in eighth
01:17:05because we had six covered and we ran out of fuel they've set the race lengths right on the boundary
01:17:10for us and we knew that was going to be tough it was green the whole way and sure enough we ran out
01:17:14of fuel for the last race and unfortunately let a couple by but nevertheless teams got to be pretty
01:17:18happy with uh with the development over the last little while and the pace that we've got here and
01:17:22i think four cars in the top 16 or so with a few dramas so tomorrow could be a good day rick just
01:17:28to understand that bit better at home so we've got the 112 litre fuel cells in the cars which is the
01:17:32big fuel cell you filled it up full but it's run out of fuel so that says to me everyone else in the
01:17:37pit lane is obviously marginal you must be using a little more fuel still at this stage yeah absolutely
01:17:41i mean the nissan ultima is brand new for us we've got a brand new engine in there and we're developing it
01:17:46as quickly as we can but um it takes some time to compete with guys that have had engines for you know
01:17:5110 years that they've been working on so we're already a little bit slower in the straight line
01:17:55and then they uh they cut us off at the knees and make the race lengths um unachievable for us to
01:18:00a certain extent so it's a it's a tough way to finish the day but i'm pretty excited about two uh
01:18:04two of our cars in the in the top 10 one jd one norton and we'll probably hopefully have four in
01:18:08that tomorrow if we do a good job seriously mate i reckon you've done a stellar job i don't think
01:18:11many people would have predicted 10 top tens this time of year so well done seriously moff um big turn of
01:18:16form this weekend mate uh always lots of speed but it just is really hanging is because of what rick's saying the
01:18:20cars are working well this weekend you can get on with the job of being a race driver well clearly
01:18:2520 corners around this track uh corners are our i guess godsend at the moment and um like rick said
01:18:31the straight bits are hurting us so the more corners the better for us and certainly the car is very
01:18:35speedy and racy um especially in that first sector where it's very twisty and you know flowing corners so
01:18:40uh look top 10 got to be happy with it because man that's a competitive race like it was uh
01:18:46flat out the whole way no safety car and um there might have been a couple of mistakes in there but
01:18:51um you know i was battling with will davo there for a bit and i think we lost a bit of time in the pit
01:18:56stop but uh we've got a straight car and we can box on tomorrow well done mate now i know you've got
01:19:00a lot of fans back at home that are supporting this and team a lot of heavyweights here this weekend
01:19:03too mate from jack daniels and nissan bit of pressure there yeah it's almost um our home track to a
01:19:09certain extent obviously with the jack daniels distillery here and nissan here as well so i mean thanks
01:19:13for everyone for the support it has been unreal this year but uh i must say i think we need to
01:19:17have at least 10 rounds of championship right here all right boys really really pleased to see you
01:19:22doing well thank you i'm up for that as well you know i got an ultimate when i got to the
01:19:26rental car at the airport so i'll be top 10 on the way back to the hotel no question so races 13 and
01:19:3114 highlights you will see later today on seven just check out your local guides and when we come
01:19:36back for 15 and 16 that is tomorrow morning again again so on seven mate you can wake up with the
01:19:42v8 supercars so for our aussies on seven sport we'll see you in the morning for our viewers on
01:19:48speed right across the country here we hope you enjoyed it from austin and the circuit of americas
01:19:53all we can say is thank you we'll see you again tomorrow
01:20:05so
01:20:23you
