00:00:00It's getting pretty warm on this Sunday afternoon out here at Barbagallo Raceway
00:00:07and Wanneroo and very big crowds went for a wonder after our first V8 race of the day and
00:00:15these numbers have just swelled and why not they're seeing terrific action on the track
00:00:19we've got wonderful weather and there's plenty more to come hope you're enjoying it this afternoon
00:00:23the circuit will be handed back over to the V8 supercars for the final race of the chilled Perth
00:00:28360 our winners so far Craig Lowndes and Jamie Winker so let's check in with Larco for the
00:00:34Penrite proper racing line it's all about tyres Mark yeah thanks Matty and I've got to say again
00:00:39we don't talk about tyre degradation just because we love it it's actually such a big facet of what
00:00:44we do the art of driving a race car in the modern era in particular circuit like this is driving it
00:00:48as fast as you can every lap and managing how your tyres drop off the guys that are good at it and
00:00:53set their cars up well are the guys that win races so let's just understand it a bit more so
00:00:58here's a graph I'm going to do of tyre degradation so here's the race we're about to do 42 laps
00:01:03and zero minus one minus two minus three seconds of degradation so a typical degradation graph if
00:01:09you did the whole race on one set of tyres would look something like that so you look at it and you
00:01:16think right how are we going to manage our race well a couple things we need to know if you're going
00:01:20to do a pit stop to put a set of tyres on you're going to allow coming off the track into the pit lane
00:01:24out of the pit lane and back onto the track and up to speed that's going to take you about 27 seconds
00:01:29then there's the pit stop itself two or four tyres doesn't matter call it five seconds right so we
00:01:34know 32 seconds you're going to lose if you want to put a set of tyres on so you look at your race
00:01:40and you think right 32 seconds now if we're losing two to three seconds a lap well you know straight
00:01:44away you probably don't want to do it after I don't know about 15 laps from the end because you
00:01:49won't get that time back so you've got to think well where do I do it so the fastest way to do any
00:01:54race with tyres degradation like this is to split it in half isn't it you'd have half on one set of
00:01:59green tyres and half on another there is no faster way to do it so there's that there but you're not
00:02:04actually just racing the race distance you're racing your competitors so what you've got to think
00:02:08about then okay I reckon I'll come in a little early because I want to get what we call the undercut
00:02:13so the undercut being I want to get in and do a lap or two laps and get that two or three seconds
00:02:18for a couple of laps over my competitor get back out and in front and go home so that's why you're
00:02:23seeing teams stop in between that 16 17 18 19 area in here somewhere to do their pit stop now the big
00:02:31question then what if there's a safety car well how early lap five you're going to take your safety
00:02:36car no that's way too long you wouldn't do it lap 10 you would consider it lap 15 definitely now I
00:02:43just want to have a closer look at degradation so here's turn six what we call the bowl over the
00:02:47back here now I've grabbed a graph out of a car this shows you between the start of the race
00:02:52and the end of the race so this is speed or importantly this is one we want to look at this
00:02:56is throttle trace so there's 100 throttle they get off the throttle down change in the gears and this
00:03:02is the important part so coming out of this corner here this is the throttle trace right now this one
00:03:08is a nice fresh new try tyre sorry and you can see that's 100 throttle he gets to that over a used
00:03:15tyre or degraded tyre that's about 70 metres in track distance now that correlates look directly
00:03:22to 10 kilometres per hour of speed so it goes to show how important that is there's a couple of ways
00:03:28you can approach it when you look here car a a fairly conventional line would be something like
00:03:34that where if you want to manage your tyres drive the car a little straighter you come down here try and
00:03:40square it off a little more and do that and what that does it allows the undercut we talk about
00:03:45but it also allows you as you turn and straighten your wheel you can relax that tyre let the right
00:03:51hand rear tyre share a little bit of the load as you put the gas on and drive up that hill all quite
00:03:56scientific but again we don't babble about tyre degradation because we love the word exactly so
00:04:01the drivers have got to keep an eye on their own tyres keep an eye on the competitors you've got to
00:04:05watch out for your safety car you've got to have a smart strategy you've got to be flexible as well
00:04:09there's a whole lot to make up a perfect race now our mates at shannon's have another amazing trip for
00:04:15you to take if you want to be part of this a 16 day fully escorted self-drive tour for two to the
00:04:21usa in a ford mustang convertible including vip entry to the concourse de elegance event at pebble beach
00:04:28tickets to the gooding classic auction laguna seca classic racing event 13 46 46 is the best way to do it and you
00:04:35can be part of that competition thanks to our mates at shannon's so the v8 supercars are getting
00:04:40ready to head back out onto the circuit the build-up the race 12 of the championship the final race
00:04:46here at barbagello raceway stay with us
00:04:49so they're all lined up in pit lane ready to head on out for another 42 laps the final 100 kilometers
00:05:16at the chill perth 360 and while we take a look in on our drivers in there in pit lane
00:05:23want to say well done to our mate mark barretta not with us this weekend because he's been riding the
00:05:28tour de cure they went from adelaide and finished up in canberra today so the final leg of the journey
00:05:33from jinderbine through to canberra and well done barrettes you're a champion mate and he'll be back
00:05:38with us for our next round in austin texas and a big thank you too before we get busy again to greg
00:05:46murphy for filling in in pit lane throughout this weekend so the championship point score after 11 races
00:05:53jamie wing cup has this seesawing battle going with his with his old mate will davison
00:06:00quake lounge third after his victory yesterday
00:06:03i'm interested to see boys what that victory in particular for jamie wing cup
00:06:09will do from here on in it was like the monkey off the back even though he'd already won before
00:06:14that one it seems now as though they're ready to start attacking and when he's in that kind of frame
00:06:21the team's in that spot they're dangerous roland dane said at the beginning of the year that he felt
00:06:26that jamie and mark dutton would put their case together piece by piece gather knowledge about
00:06:30how to get the most out of these cars and the composite of that would give them a result seems
00:06:35as though it's taken to about now as jamie said earlier to be able to do that bit of other news from
00:06:39the pit lane also engine change for car number 18 alex davis and they had a problem in the last race so
00:06:44that car will roll out now with a fresh engine for the beginning of this race number 12.
00:06:51oh oil soak everywhere so that's bad a lot of it too yeah everybody who's in a an even position
00:06:57on the grid's going to pay a penalty for that alex davidson's done a fantastic job all weekend
00:07:03neil he's been the most competitive we've seen him this year for sure um and very strong i mean
00:07:09the car's been as fast as his brother and also as fast as mark winterbottom had a chat also to chas
00:07:15mostard adam debora his engineer and i asked chad chas i should say about what his feelings were in
00:07:23relation to just being in this new car because you've got to remember it's a totally different
00:07:27car to the sort of vehicle that he's been driving and just what it's like the same thing we hear from
00:07:32all these guys it's uh intensity you know he said it's uh you can't believe how accurate those are
00:07:37around him and how well they can set you up and how hard they push for how long he's done a great
00:07:42job hey guys uh this is a bit of a disaster down here on the racing line um the oil and the width
00:07:48of it uh for the guys starting on the outside on the uh even side of the grid is uh they're going to
00:07:55be in for a hard time at the start of this race there's a slick that's about two meters wide and it has
00:08:00a lot of oil in it very very slippery yeah that's from the v8 ute race that we had just before this
00:08:07event so the right hand side's the spot to be and the grip level difference matt would be massive you
00:08:17know it'll be the difference between losing two or three grid positions off the jump when the surface
00:08:24is so slippery i mean it's already a slippery surface you don't need to add to add stuff
00:08:31jason bright down there was lamenting being in hot air again and kicking his own tail about the start
00:08:36but also said it just doesn't really and he said it in the interview a bit earlier doesn't have the
00:08:39feel in the clutch that he'd like and both the drivers he and fabian were sort of complaining about
00:08:43that but he said i lifted the clutch pedal and then not much happened so i lifted a bit more and
00:08:48next minute i've got a pile of wheel spin i can't manage so that was a real frustration and
00:08:52he was well aware of how much pain it caused him well and and when you've got a clutch issue
00:08:57at a low grip surface it's much worse thank you so if you get too much bite then it bursts into
00:09:02wheel spin easier so his issues would be exaggerated on a surface like this there are a few could have
00:09:11won that race sentences to complete for jason bright one had he got a better start he probably would have
00:09:17won the race number two did they not have a wheel drive a wheel nut drama in the pit stop and he
00:09:23probably would have run the race and then the other one is if it was a lap longer one more lap the
00:09:29problem is we've been looking for years been searching high and low we've never been able
00:09:32to sort that if column on the right hand side of the results page it's never it's the biggest column
00:09:37i'm down here at uh grid six with alex davison hey mate um awesome job this weekend uh you've been
00:09:46showing some great pace not outside the top six uh in any of the qualifying so far and a couple of good
00:09:51results albeit we just found out that you have had an engine change in between what so what was the
00:09:55story um i don't know it was running fine the last race but they found a bit of metal in the oil
00:10:00fielder so it's just a precautionary thing but yeah we're wrapped with how we're going this weekend
00:10:05uh we've just been building up over the first few rounds and campbell and i are gelling better and
00:10:09better so that's sort of where the improvement's coming from but good to have a bit more consistency
00:10:14over the race weekend that's really what we've been aiming for and we uh saw a puka coey one of
00:10:19your teammates uh come in and give you a bit of an earful which we we thought was fairly entertaining
00:10:24but uh i mean mate you've been showing some good pace he was uh sort of saying that you were too slow
00:10:28but uh you're right there on it and and doing an unbelievable job so i mean this is uh giving it back a
00:10:33little bit in it yeah exactly i know you you thought i should have given him a bit of a spray
00:10:37back maybe i was a bit gentle on him but uh you know i don't want to do that sort of stuff on camera
00:10:42maybe i'm a bit soft but uh yeah no happy days at the moment we've still got room for improvement
00:10:46we're working hard and uh we'll keep plugging away good job mate good luck for this one and uh keep up
00:10:51the good work hey down here with james moffett uh james position 20 mate but the thing i noticed you're
00:10:57on a set of green tires and you got another set in the garage mate i think you're in better tire
00:11:01condition than anyone in the field well let's hope so lucko but uh we're a bit further back than what
00:11:06we would have liked to be for this race but uh our car is really good as a race package looks after
00:11:12its tires well so um about a couple of top 10 finishes so far this weekend let's hope for another
00:11:18one mate we know when you keep your nose clean with your head down you do a ripper job keep it up
00:11:25yeah hey uh on the grip of scott mclaughlin a good qual for the second one mate obviously the
00:11:29first one not so good today but uh uh the consistency the consistency of the car getting
00:11:34better i mean it's tough around here as you know already yeah this is probably one of our bogey tracks
00:11:39the low the abrasive surface is quite hard on us so we're just trying to get our car a little bit
00:11:43better see how we go in this race i want to try and uh stick with these guys as much as i can but
00:11:47look after the tires at the same time we had a great run here last year in the development series
00:11:51race meeting and uh you know did a good job i mean you know the circuit around here albeit i think
00:11:55you've got a little bit of advantage on the on the outside at the moment there's an oil slick
00:11:59down to turn one so you're on the inside hopefully you get a good start yeah sweet as i'm happy with
00:12:03that go on mate good luck from one kiwi to another sweet as we can subtitle all that for everybody
00:12:11later on he won in the dunlop development series race in 2012 so he has got great form here i spoke
00:12:18with his engineer richard hallway in the gap and they've just been hurting their rear tire life a bit
00:12:22particularly the inside edge of the tires been hurting so they're fiddling with that i spoke to
00:12:26garth tanner at a similar issue he goes i'm on a seesaw i can make speed uh or i can make consistency
00:12:33so i've either got tire life or i haven't but i can never have both of them together so he said
00:12:37that's the sphere that he's operating in at the moment uh mark winterbottom there was a conversation
00:12:42down there a minute ago with alex davis and about him i asked him whether or not he thought there was
00:12:46enough room on the outside in that exchange with jason bright he said they actually had a
00:12:50semi-friendly chat about it but he was really concerned about where he ended up there and
00:12:55said you were whacking mirrors so then he dived over to see where they had a crack in it and
00:12:58need replacing because they'd forgotten about the little mirror exchange
00:13:03so we've had two races so far this weekend the first one by that man there craig lounges
00:13:07his teammate won the next and together they will start this final race from the front row of the grid
00:13:1428 cars 42 laps 100 k's left don't go anywhere it's coming up right after this on seven sport
00:13:28well the australian touring car championship first raced at this
00:13:58circuit back in 1973 when alan moffett won a great duel against peter brock craig lounges is
00:14:05the all-time winner here with 14 victories but it's going to be a unique challenge for these guys
00:14:12today there's a big greasy line on the left-hand side of the circuit so we're four out of 14 for the
00:14:19season back to wa it's a great place to race take us through this circuit now a little over 2400
00:14:26meters of race track it's clockwise matty in case you haven't been watching for the last couple of
00:14:30races about 43 of the lap is 100 throttle seven turns slowest corners turn one at 90k it's got a
00:14:37pretty high average speed 250 odd case down the straight between turn six and turn seven and that
00:14:43average speed uh makes it one of the quicker places that we visit standing on the front of the grid
00:14:49here position two in front of craig lanza's car now i can tell you that all that murph was talking about
00:14:53and seeing they've put on the track straight down there where his left tire is going to go i've been
00:14:56trying to clean it off a little bit for him let's have a a quick chat hey craig you can buy me a beer
00:15:01later mate i've been out there cleaning the sand off the front of your car mate this is what you're
00:15:05gonna have to peel hard right here but look who's next to you yeah i know it's something uh i tried that the
00:15:10race before but it was grass so uh i'm gonna try here look at something that's uh obviously going
00:15:14to be very mindful of see what it feels like off the start of this observation lap and then of course
00:15:19try and see if we can merge across as quick as we can good luck today mate i want to quickly grab
00:15:23a word if i can adrian burgess here he is the uh team principal hey adrian this is going to be
00:15:27particularly important given that craig's going to need to merge across very quickly and old mate
00:15:31team player next to him team orders for this weekend uh no no team orders as long as they don't
00:15:35trade paint you know they're they're too uh sensible boys race hard but give each other a bit of
00:15:39respect but we don't want to damage anything that's uh for the team you know we've got to
00:15:43think of the team first and race hard thanks mate well i think this i think the start's going to be
00:15:47fascinating well as he crossed the line to win race 11 earlier today he said we think we've got our
00:15:53mojo back and uh by the performance in that race and where you're starting for this one it does look
00:15:57that way mate yeah thanks murph um yeah obviously really rewarding to have a uh to have a win with
00:16:02this pace you know first time this year so uh we've got a good starting position long way to go
00:16:07i think you find a few guys might uh not try to pit but uh yeah we'll see what happens well for
00:16:12once starting on the dirty line as it usually is might be a bit of an advantage with that oil so
00:16:16looking to get away but are you going to hand lansy a freebie like you did yesterday or what
00:16:21uh no try not to but my starts up my uh about my strength so i hope i can get off to a nice clean
00:16:26one here and lead this race good luck mate have a great race cheers so 66th race win
00:16:33earlier today for jamie wing cup and a hundredth podium before you talk it's just enormous thank you
00:16:42and a 45 point lead in the championship so behind them okay it's winter bottom and cool fard
00:16:51on the second row the third row belongs to scotty mclaughlin and alex davidson
00:16:56russell ingall the super cheap auto car and rusty allegedly in his final full-time season of v8
00:17:07supercar racing how many of that sort of you've done up here oh there'd be a groove in the road
00:17:12wouldn't there no it's his 18th and final year i say allegedly because if all of a sudden there's a
00:17:17pep in his step with some good solid results i reckon he'll redraft that media release pretty quickly
00:17:22lee holdsworth detailed the engine changes for erebus motorsport v8 category technical manager
00:17:30there frank adamson for v8 supercars there's the red bull racing australia holden commodores
00:17:35vf series they'll adorn the front row there's little livery differences between those cars if you want to
00:17:40pick which is which on that subject it's very difficult to sort out the pepsi max cars
00:17:46fprs
00:17:57let's have a look at the fusso starting grid to check out the way they line up for race number 12.
00:18:01it's an all red bull front row wind cup and lounge will lead them away row number two we've got mark
00:18:06winterbottom and fabian courtard positions at three and four row three of the grid five and six scott
00:18:12mclaughlin and alex davison fresh engine in that car a lot of work between the gap will davison and
00:18:18david reynolds are next we're seeing a lot of the ford performance racing built cars at the top end of
00:18:21the field here for vip pet food shane van gisberg and the fast kiwi with david wall that's a great
00:18:26performance inside the top 10. career best qualifier for david wall chas mostard about to head out for
00:18:32just his third ever v8 supercar race lee holdsworth taken out on the opening lap of our previous race so he'll
00:18:39be keen to get back into the action james courtney had good pace earlier today russell ingall about
00:18:4650 races here over the course of his career james moffat's been in much better form than that
00:18:52qualifying position suggests and he's got a good bank of tires too so keep your eyes out
00:18:58for the norton 360 nissan garth tander 23rd position he'll want to forget about this weekend
00:19:06at his home circuit just hasn't played out the way he would have liked scott pie and alexander primer
00:19:12making up our 28 cars and alex premer scott pie did the complete race last time without coming in so
00:19:20did local dean fiore he did a fantastic job to finish just outside the top 10 in 13th position
00:19:27on board there with chas mostard we've commented over the weekend it's been a very impressive
00:19:33debut for him in wa so for fiore that gamble that little strategy play he got bumped to 13th just
00:19:41on the last lap up until that point he was about eighth or ninth our statistician oscar fiore and otto
00:19:47picked that our engineer in the box that that was about where he's going to land but it was actually a
00:19:51pretty good play because he qualified 20 seconds that was a good net game and drop it there brother
00:19:56perfect so that's mark dutton and jeremy moore just bringing the two drivers up onto the grid and
00:20:01making sure they're parked just a little bit back from the end of the box so remember there's a greasy
00:20:07line on the right hand side of the circuit as we look at it you asked me before about how many laps
00:20:15russell ingalls done there's all that oil soak on the left side of your screen there at the moment
00:20:21it can't give you the lap number maddie but it all started in 1996 for russell
00:20:32so the red bull racing australian commodore side by side the two race winners so far this weekend
00:20:38win cup and lounge grease on the circuit to the right they all spear over to the other side
00:20:46and that's going to make it interesting at turn one and mark winterbottoms already putting pressure
00:20:51on craig lounge and will assume second position it's a very good start from lounge on the outside he didn't
00:20:58lose too much and one of i think it's maro ingall or tim slay i think it's angle yep off the road
00:21:07turn one he may have got some assistance there
00:21:15i think it was angle and i believe he's also been a judged a jump start as well and that's a judge of
00:21:21fact decision that one so that'll involve a hit lane penalty win cup winterbottom lounge great
00:21:27performance by winterbottom to aggressively jump in there and split those two red ball holders
00:21:34a lot of covering going on to the inside holdsworth down the inside
00:21:38so is tim slay that's dean fiore behind him in the dodo entry
00:21:47oh he's going to get a bump he thought dean was going to unload tim then didn't you
00:21:52so tim slay just got the mercedes turned in he had a little bit of a bumping session
00:21:58with dean fiore and the dodo commodore
00:22:00this is an amazing ride over the curb at turn three
00:22:07that's a great shot too because it shows you just how much they plummet into the bowl at
00:22:12turn six from the crest of the hill one of the things that's a real hallmark of this racetrack
00:22:16and look at this i reckon middle bottom might even get up the inside here with that sort of traction
00:22:20is the place has got terrific undulation there's a huge amount of rise and fall notably here on the
00:22:24chains from fifth to sixth they run into the final braking area at seven it's very uphill and then
00:22:30off turn seven it actually runs quite a bit downhill onto this pit straight great little racetrack
00:22:3622 james courtney was going to come in he reported a bit of damage potentially on the left front but
00:22:42at this stage he's elected to stay out the team got ready for him to come in but he's
00:22:47carried on past the pitch this time yeah he dropped four spots straight away and ended up
00:22:51partnering up with his teammate guard tander so early dramas for james courtney but early pace
00:22:58for mark winterbottom he's pushing hard because he wants to force the issue he can get that clear air
00:23:04he can relax everything improve the brake temps and be easier on the tires so it's maximum attack
00:23:08for him at the moment everybody's getting into some weird zones at the moment in their cold
00:23:13tire pressures for the way in which they start the race trying to maximize grip and performance
00:23:18so they've got to be very careful as they wobble off the edges of the racetrack here as well here's
00:23:22the replay of the start and on board on the right hand side there with winterbottom so
00:23:29yeah he definitely got a good jump and i think also lounge suffered from the fact of the oil slick
00:23:35on the left hand side i think mark said it before his initial jump looked pretty good as engel goes
00:23:39off on the outside of one but the secondary part of his start when he grabbed the gear looked pretty
00:23:44ordinary this is from reynolds like to be in the middle of this pack wouldn't you
00:23:52so that's up the inside little bump there for fabian and the grip level at the start is so low and
00:23:59around the first half a lap cars move around so much especially with the tire pressures that neil was
00:24:04referring to before there's a lot of aggro there with premier and todd kelly yeah so those temperatures
00:24:12and pressures have normalized now for jamie wincup and you can see he's just nailed the fastest lap of
00:24:17the race and he's eased up that margin a little bit so see he's skipped away so it's taken him a lap
00:24:22or two to just find his feet now things have settled down that looked like an awkward moment back there
00:24:27before and todd kelly's coming in neil he's got a tire damage i think it's a consequence of that drama that
00:24:32was unfolding in front of us a second ago now most that putting a lot of pressure
00:24:36on van gisberg and he's right in this battle it's been a very impressive debut i said it before david
00:24:42wall right in behind how's the mixture of experience here with russell engel bumping him the whole way
00:24:48around turn one and this is rick on the outside prema todd on the inside now there's going to be a bump
00:24:56here gonna be a bump there's a bump he gets away but then he runs him off the road it's popped the tire
00:25:03that's why he went straight ahead so that was a good bit of driving by jonathan webb have a look super
00:25:08slow mo this will be pretty telling
00:25:13so now todd's got the understeer it won't turn look at it pushing across the road cuts them both out into
00:25:18the stuff where there's zero grip look at the steering angle on the car on todd's car he's got a huge
00:25:23amount of right lock and just won't go where he's pointing it and there's the wall right there they
00:25:28would look like the two of them would think they're going in the fence and that's going fast that's 190
00:25:34kilometers an hour and look how close they end up going to the fence todd's got the front wheels locked
00:25:41so then he's going to he knows that you go through the grass and you're going to make the bitumen again
00:25:46in a second have a look at this i've never seen a train ride through there
00:25:53wow that's insane and what else has gone on down here big lock up for wind cup down at turn seven
00:26:00and i heard clowns on the radio discussing it so he must have chimed in to explain what he saw
00:26:05before so that will i imagine put a pretty significant mark on the inside front johnny wing
00:26:11cups dunlop tie he's done a good job to keep on there must be a run see there there's oil there
00:26:20that's what it's called it so that's actually happened from the start and when wing cups put
00:26:25his foot on the brake he's grabbed the oil patch and that was telling there too because wing cup just went
00:26:31around it on that lap post-race investigation incidentally between cars 7 and 34 todd kelly
00:26:39alex premat mario engels car back in as you can see in the erebus garage and the fastest man
00:26:44in sector one on this lap was jason bride who's down the order slightly he's ninth recovering from
00:26:50that tough qualifying where the gear lever broke he's going to try and apply that pace now and mario
00:26:55angles had trouble with the they call it hanging up meaning that the engine idle stays at a higher
00:27:03rev range than he likes bright goes down the inside of alex davison very good job so mario's had that
00:27:09drama with the new throttle body inlet manifold that they've got on the bends this weekend well
00:27:15nothing uh from the team as far as alex primo's car any damage that they know of at this stage he's
00:27:20continuing on but that was one very close call with the wall there for both of them for alex and for
00:27:27todd kelly and when they get to that investigation they're going to have a lot of camera angles to look
00:27:31at actually it's quite either of them will get in trouble because they actually weren't doing the
00:27:37wrong thing todd's todd's tire was flat and he had nowhere to go jim slade's come into the lane as
00:27:42well so that's two of the mercedes benz amg cars in the lane there's jonathan webb at the back here's
00:27:47the super slow-mo again check it out as we go to the break
00:27:53there's our seven sport mega wall and smack bang in the middle you can see a very concerned ryan
00:27:59madison the ceo of eribus motorsport the reason is both tim slade and mario ingle are now in the
00:28:05garage so lee holdsworth's the only operator slade has some problems that they're trying to get the bottom
00:28:11off right now and between races they had to clear the radiator of lee holdsworth's car from that
00:28:18previous event it was jam-packed solid with sand and look at this just a little bit of rubber has got
00:28:24down in there between the brake rotor and the rim and you can imagine the temperatures in there
00:28:28peak temperatures when you've got traffic around you here in the front brakes are about 850 degrees
00:28:33celsius scott sinclair one of the engineers at the holden racing team so you don't need much you get a
00:28:39huge amount of rubber debris all around the racetrack with these softer tires and so you don't need much
00:28:43of it in there for that to happen it's not actually as bad as it looks so wing cuts the leader by 1.6
00:28:49seconds we're taking a look at james courtney who's in 19th after starting 16th and we set at the start to
00:28:55keep an eye on the likes of james moffett who's got a good set of tires and has had a good run this
00:29:01weekend and he's moved from 20th up to 16th james has got a bit of damage on the front of that holden
00:29:06racing team commodore and the front bumper assembly skew with and i noticed he had a huge understeer
00:29:11through turn four there so it won't be helping his cause as we go on board here with holdsworth
00:29:1718 why don't we just listen to the mercedes amg song for a lap around wateroo around barbago
00:29:24raceway because this thing sounds pretty cool let's have a listen
00:29:54so
00:29:58so
00:30:08so
00:30:14so
00:30:20Meantime, it's on here at the moment between Will Davison and Scotty McLaughlin.
00:30:31Side by side through one, then two.
00:30:34Will holds on as they skate literally through two and three.
00:30:38They change the direction there and it's crest in the road.
00:30:40That was pretty wild stuff.
00:30:42That's a positional change. Will moves up to fourth.
00:30:48Sounded good, didn't it?
00:30:49Yeah, sounded great.
00:30:51And those engines prepared by HWA in Germany.
00:30:56They had engineering staff down in Tasmania, two race meetings back at Erebus Motorsport,
00:31:02just to continue to tickle along the development of those cars.
00:31:05And they've brought some of that development with them this weekend.
00:31:07There's one of the cars driven by Tim Slade.
00:31:09Very different configuration, crankshaft in the heart of the engine.
00:31:14And that's the reason for the very different sound.
00:31:16The wind cup's got a margin of 1.7 seconds from the winter bottom.
00:31:22And then Lowndes, Will Davison, Scotty McLaughlin, Fabian Coulthard, Jason Bright.
00:31:27Bright is up to seventh from that poorer qualifying position.
00:31:30Then it's Reynolds, Davison and Van Gisberg.
00:31:32And I think Bright was 12th, so he's made a bunch of spots.
00:31:34And so has Garth Tander.
00:31:35So he's racing well.
00:31:40So on lap 14 out of 42, entire life will start to play a part in this race soon.
00:31:46This is the chill Perth 360, and it is all happening at Barbagallo Raceway.
00:31:55In the break, we had some action down at turn seven.
00:31:58And as a result, we've got pit stops.
00:32:00We've scattered the field.
00:32:02A big question mark over whether there was anything on the road.
00:32:05Yeah, well, this is going to be interesting, because this has prompted some activity down in the pits now.
00:32:22I can see the FPR car's in.
00:32:23Now, wing cup's in really good shape.
00:32:25If you look at the tyres that are going on, four green tyres.
00:32:28So whilst that hurt him, he's going to be having a really good recovery.
00:32:31I'll be keen to find out, and I'll get back to, in fact, what tore us up a lot.
00:32:35All the tyres, turn back around.
00:32:37Oh, no drama here for Ford Performance Racing in Winterbottom.
00:32:40They've got a wheel nut problem in the front right corner, Murph.
00:32:43Go, go, go, go, go.
00:32:43Yeah, absolute shocker down there.
00:32:44They had a wheel nut stick in the wheel.
00:32:45They couldn't get the wheel off at all.
00:32:47They lost a lot of time on the right front.
00:32:50Maybe, I'd say, six or eight seconds.
00:32:52So we'll clean this up for you in a moment, folks,
00:32:54because all of a sudden there's a whole heap of things going on at once.
00:32:57You've arrived back just as everybody was recovering from what happened.
00:33:01So wing cup came in, Winterbottom came in,
00:33:03ahead of schedule having gone off the racetrack at turn seven.
00:33:07Will Davison's in now as well.
00:33:09It leaves Lowndes in the lead of the race, by the way,
00:33:12from Scotty McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard.
00:33:14When these stops are done, we'll show you what happened
00:33:18because at turn seven, the two litres carried off the road.
00:33:23You think there's some stuff on the road,
00:33:25as in some lubricant or some water or some glycol
00:33:27or certainly something that they arrived,
00:33:31and both the guys straight off the road.
00:33:32Have a look at this.
00:33:33Let's explain it.
00:33:34So we've got some replays here.
00:33:35Now, Engel goes off the road down here with glycol.
00:33:41So that's the green fluid you can see.
00:33:43It's engine coolant coming from that car.
00:33:45Meantime, these guys arrive on it down here.
00:33:47They can't stop.
00:33:48They're the first on the crime, the first to arrive.
00:33:51And they pay the penalty as the pioneers.
00:33:52So wind cup and Winterbottom both went off on those greasy conditions.
00:33:57So you can hear how much of a struggle it was.
00:34:03They pick the throttle up and come out the other side.
00:34:05So first of all, the locking brakes,
00:34:07and then you've got to pick the throttle up
00:34:09and try and deal with all that.
00:34:11And so Engel's just peeled off the road here
00:34:13on that early pit lane entry.
00:34:16So it just scattered the pack.
00:34:17So the first two paid a huge price.
00:34:20Good to go.
00:34:21Good to go.
00:34:22Yeah, for being pioneers,
00:34:24for being first on the spot with all that fluid on the road.
00:34:26Now, this is critical because Lowndes has popped out in front of wind cup,
00:34:30but wind cup lost a heap of time, remember.
00:34:33I know that Larco said he's got four new tyres,
00:34:35and we'll see how he recovers.
00:34:36But remember, he'd already lost a pile of time
00:34:39relative to those he was racing,
00:34:41together with Winterbottom,
00:34:42when he went off the road.
00:34:43Now the safety car's out.
00:34:45Keep pushing around.
00:34:46Keep going, mate.
00:34:48This will be interesting,
00:34:49because some people are going to keep on going at racing speed.
00:34:53We've got a car off.
00:34:53It's Michael Caruso.
00:34:54So Caruso's gone off in the Norton Nissan.
00:34:59Just stand by.
00:35:01Just stand by.
00:35:01You need to wave the cars behind you through.
00:35:03Wave the cars behind you through.
00:35:11Now, what's going on here?
00:35:14Some issue between the teammates.
00:35:17So James Moffat may have had a tyre problem,
00:35:19because why is he out there skating like that?
00:35:21Has he been given a shove?
00:35:22So he's out there picking up all kinds of rubbish on those tyres.
00:35:31Meantime, the wind cup, by the way,
00:35:33with that new set of tyres on,
00:35:34he went out and immediately punched out the fastest lap of the race.
00:35:37Now, this has really scrambled the egg here.
00:35:39Just trying to unravel who's popped up where.
00:35:43His cars have been coming in and out.
00:35:44The safety car's now gone out to neutralise the field.
00:35:50Here's Michael Caruso stepping out of the Nissan Altima.
00:35:55Lowndes is the leader of the race.
00:35:57They'll pick him up.
00:35:57Here's the Pedder's STP safety car.
00:35:59Todd Kelly goes by.
00:36:01We'll clean it all up in the break.
00:36:02Come back and explain it in just a tick here in Perth.
00:36:05So, we've made it to the halfway mark of the final race of the Chilper 360.
00:36:12The whole world's changed on us.
00:36:14That's answered the question why Michael Caruso ended up off the road.
00:36:18The vital component missing of car number 36.
00:36:21Lots of drama in here because some guys ended up having to double stack.
00:36:28So, you can see Alex Davison behind.
00:36:30So, there's a drama here in Cawthard's.
00:36:33Wrong tyres have gone on that car.
00:36:35Then, Ben Giesbergen drives through the FPR pit.
00:36:38Davison was double stacked behind.
00:36:40There you go.
00:36:41He's double stacked.
00:36:42So, he drives straight through.
00:36:44It's like pit street.
00:36:48That's just nailed Alex Davison.
00:36:50And that's put him down in 18th.
00:36:54The Norton Nissans getting a ride out of there.
00:36:57Craig Lowndes leads the race.
00:36:58Jamie Winkup, by virtue of getting processed through pit lane at that time,
00:37:03managed to do a pretty good rescue job, Red Bull Racing Australia,
00:37:06after arriving down at turn seven and losing the lead.
00:37:10I'm just skating on some coolant down there.
00:37:13So, it's mixed things up with 21 laps to go.
00:37:16Yeah, disaster for one of the Norton cows with Michael Caruso's wheel coming off.
00:37:20But, a super stop by the team to get James Moffat out.
00:37:24He's moved up to 8th.
00:37:25And he's on a green set of tyres.
00:37:28And he come from 20th, Murph.
00:37:30So, that is a really good run.
00:37:31The other guy that's done a great job is Garth Tander.
00:37:33He started 23rd.
00:37:35And Garth is now 10th.
00:37:36And the season best performance for young James Moffat so far was a 9th race 7 hook coey in New Zealand.
00:37:43So, where he is at the moment, 8th in this field.
00:37:46If you can stay there, be on for a very strong performance.
00:37:50Anytime you can get a car that's still in the brand new development phase for season 1,
00:37:57he's a very impressive performance.
00:37:59So, those guys have been doing a good job.
00:38:01Both he and Michael Caruso, I think, have been driving very well in the recent races.
00:38:06Now, as you've watched all that roll out, you're probably wondering why Jamie,
00:38:09why that triggered the pit stops just because he went off the track.
00:38:11Because they probably were just a couple of laps short of where they ideally wanted to come in to split that race,
00:38:15as we showed you.
00:38:16Well, here's the tyres that came off Jamie's car.
00:38:18Now, I've showed you plenty of times with the heat gun.
00:38:20When they come into the pit lane, they'll be 100 degrees centigrade.
00:38:22On the track, that'll be more like 130, 140.
00:38:26Now, if I try and brush my hand off there, look, the sand doesn't even come off.
00:38:30The sand is embedded in the tyre.
00:38:31The net result, a lap of grip.
00:38:33Now, let's just try and grab a quick word, if we can.
00:38:36Sorry, Jeremy, more Craig Lowndes, engineer.
00:38:38Mate, in a good position.
00:38:39I reckon you guys have got a battle here now.
00:38:41You've got to keep everyone behind you, manage your tyres,
00:38:43and race your good buddy just over three feet away from you here.
00:38:45Absolutely, mate.
00:38:46It's going to be a tough race to the end.
00:38:47There's no team orders here, but we'll do our best to come out top.
00:38:50But, hey, it's a team game still,
00:38:53and we'll do what's best for the team, first and foremost.
00:38:55Thanks, Sherry, for the heads up.
00:38:56We'll grab a quick word with Dutto here.
00:38:59Hey, Mark Dutton, who's Jamie Winkup's engineer,
00:39:02just had a word to Jerry.
00:39:03This is hard, mate, isn't it?
00:39:04Because you've got to compete against each other here,
00:39:06but you're going to have everyone climbing over the top.
00:39:08How are you going to manage that?
00:39:09Well, we've seen them do it time and time again.
00:39:11They're very professional.
00:39:12So, while they race hard, they're not going to take each other out,
00:39:16but they're still going to race.
00:39:17We want to win.
00:39:17They want to win.
00:39:18At the end of the day, we'll be happy.
00:39:19But, obviously...
00:39:21I get a sense, though, Dutto,
00:39:22that the rivalry between them has intensified this year.
00:39:26Well, I think at the start it did,
00:39:28but for me it's backed down a little bit
00:39:30because we haven't been as dominant as other years.
00:39:32So we've really, as a whole team, drivers included,
00:39:35boys, everyone have re-got together,
00:39:37re-pushed to be a single unit,
00:39:39to work to be competitive against everyone else.
00:39:43Anyway, good luck, mate.
00:39:44It's fascinating to watch.
00:39:45Thanks, Larco.
00:39:45And Larco, Scaifey,
00:39:46those tyres that you were just having a look at.
00:39:49Yes, mate.
00:39:49So, you know, the grey, the look of them,
00:39:51when they don't work,
00:39:52they don't have that really dark colour to them, do they?
00:39:55It's totally like a light grey, total different surface, isn't it?
00:39:58Mate, it's an awful looking colour.
00:39:59You can see a little bit of scrubbing here on the edge,
00:40:01but you're dead right, mate.
00:40:02And that's a really good indicator of when you go off.
00:40:06And not just here at Wanneroo,
00:40:07when you have a little off on the circle,
00:40:08we often talk about it, don't we, mate?
00:40:09Like, how long it takes you to get back up to speed?
00:40:13You've got to try and get that out.
00:40:14You've got to wear that out of the tyre.
00:40:15And round here, well, that's just a drama.
00:40:17It's game over.
00:40:18There's a bit of feathering on those too,
00:40:19so they're actually looking quite stressed.
00:40:21So when the tyres are good,
00:40:24they've got a really oily, dark look.
00:40:26So on certain surfaces, they work better than others.
00:40:28And this place, because of the very open nature of the surface,
00:40:31the very, very abrasive surface at Barbagallo Raceway,
00:40:36the tyres wheel spin.
00:40:38And then look at that.
00:40:39It just, it just,
00:40:41and what you said about the feathering,
00:40:43the feathering comes from the wheel spin.
00:40:44So it just basically buzzes the tyre up
00:40:46and tries to tear the surface of the tyre off.
00:40:49And Pete's stress in there as well.
00:40:51Now, interesting,
00:40:52that command that you heard a little earlier
00:40:54for Wincup in particular,
00:40:57because we were watching it at the time as the lights go out,
00:41:00that giddy-up of get on with it while you can,
00:41:03while that safety car was being deployed,
00:41:05that did get Wincup off the hook.
00:41:07So the way things have worked out here,
00:41:09that that has actually worked.
00:41:10So he was able to get in, get his tyres,
00:41:12go back out, and then get on with it
00:41:14at basically racing pace.
00:41:16When everybody came in,
00:41:18when the safety car came out,
00:41:19they've all in varying ways been hurt.
00:41:22So it's popped Red Bull into a very good position here.
00:41:26Jason Bryce done a great job also.
00:41:28He's got eight positions.
00:41:29He's currently in fourth.
00:41:30So a big slide.
00:41:32The best restart that Wincup could put on.
00:41:34And his team-mate's gone with him.
00:41:37So this is it.
00:41:38Under 20 laps to go now.
00:41:40They've all been serviced in pit lane.
00:41:48Lowndes loves this track.
00:41:50Will Davison tucked in behind Jamie Wincup.
00:41:53He was the only Ford driver
00:41:55to salute the chequered flag so far this season.
00:41:58On board now with Dave Reynolds.
00:42:03Right up behind Scott McLaughlin.
00:42:08Bright looks very good on the way into Cole, doesn't he?
00:42:11He's got great pace there, and he has all weekend.
00:42:14The amount of times I've seen Jason Bright
00:42:17set the fastest first sector time
00:42:19through either qualifying or throughout the race.
00:42:22He just continues.
00:42:23He loves that part of the circuit.
00:42:25A bit of ducking and weaving here
00:42:26between James Moffat and Garth Tander.
00:42:31So a 56-9 to start with for Craig Lowndes.
00:42:34James tried to cover him,
00:42:36but there was a Holden in the way there.
00:42:38So he had to yield,
00:42:39and Tander gets down the inside.
00:42:40Right, so that's now for position nine for Garth Tander.
00:42:45And remember that Winterbottom was going toe-to-toe here
00:42:48with Jamie Wincup in the early phase of this race,
00:42:50and the super slow-mo is showing us a lot of action
00:42:52and wild stuff over this Turn 2-3 complex.
00:42:55But for Winterbottom,
00:42:57the drama for him in that pit stop
00:42:59meant that he's way down in 20th at the moment.
00:43:01So while one guy got away with it,
00:43:04sliding off on someone else's material,
00:43:05the other paid a huge price.
00:43:10Lowndes pace very good.
00:43:12Faster slap of the race, 56-9.
00:43:14So even though there is that lubricant on the road,
00:43:17and he's on for another faster slap now,
00:43:20you'll have to be careful
00:43:21not to take too much sting out of these tyres too early.
00:43:25Sometimes if you buzz them up,
00:43:27achieve the temperature too early, too quickly,
00:43:31it has a big effect later in the race.
00:43:33So Lowndes, faster slap, 56-8-2 now.
00:43:37Drops that marker by almost a tenth of a second
00:43:39compared to his previous fastest.
00:43:43Wincup, 57-1.
00:43:45Davison, 57-1.
00:43:46Bright, 57-0.
00:43:48Oh, gone.
00:43:49Davison runs wide at Turn 4.
00:43:52He may have tyre drummer there.
00:43:54He ran wide at the left-hander.
00:43:57Scott McLaughlin's going to get down the inside also.
00:44:00And he does.
00:44:01Oh!
00:44:02That's the door skin of car 33.
00:44:07Oh, he's back up the inside again.
00:44:08It's pretty lively.
00:44:10And now he knows he's there, Scott McLaughlin.
00:44:13I don't know if he was aware,
00:44:14but we could have ended up with a similar position
00:44:16that we had yesterday for Scotty Pye.
00:44:18So Will Davison muscles his way back to that position.
00:44:21And now Davy Reynolds buys in on the inside.
00:44:26And Shane Van Gisbergen as well.
00:44:29Oh, two more off.
00:44:30It's Ingle and David Wall down at Turn 6.
00:44:34We've got two cars off at Turn 6 in the sand.
00:44:38There's no use here.
00:44:39You've got to stop now.
00:44:40Stop.
00:44:40Woo, woo, woo, woo.
00:44:41They've called him.
00:44:42Yeah.
00:44:42So he's dropped back into position there.
00:44:44So remember that Wall and Ingle got together yesterday
00:44:46in qualifying for race number 10.
00:44:50Russell ended up wearing a penalty.
00:44:51Now they're both off down here in the sand at Turn 6.
00:44:55And this is going to suit Lowndes because although he was leading,
00:44:59he had a one-and-a-half-second lead,
00:45:01he did use those tyres very hard.
00:45:04Now, with the safety car,
00:45:06there'll be a lot less stress to finish this race
00:45:08based on the tyre condition.
00:45:10It's all very good news for Jason Bright,
00:45:11who qualified 12th.
00:45:12He's now third,
00:45:14and it keeps giving the tyres a breather.
00:45:16So they've all got younger tyres on,
00:45:18but when you cool them out like this,
00:45:19they get another life.
00:45:21Here's Rusty, Russell Ingle.
00:45:25And that lap time of Craig Lowndes,
00:45:27the fastest lap that he did on the restart of 56.8,
00:45:31is the second fastest lap done in any race across the weekend.
00:45:35He owns the fastest as well earlier today, 56.7.
00:45:38So he is flying,
00:45:41but more drama continuing here at Barbagallo.
00:45:43This will be the last lap of the pedestal safety car
00:45:49with David Wall's car
00:45:51and Russell Ingle's car being removed from the circuit.
00:45:56Not a good way for Russell to finish
00:45:58what is his 50th race at Barbagallo Raceway.
00:46:02So that was the dive on the inside from Scotty McLachlan
00:46:04as he lost the skin on the left-hand door.
00:46:08Unimportantly, got the position from Will Davison.
00:46:14However, it didn't last long
00:46:16because Will got it back by the time they got down to turn seven
00:46:18and just behind them,
00:46:20the Wilson security car goes in
00:46:22and it's followed by the super cheap auto Commodore as well.
00:46:28That's the view
00:46:29from behind
00:46:32the Fujitsu entry.
00:46:34So that's Mark Winterbottom looking ahead to Alex Premmer
00:46:41and Alex Davison
00:46:43side-by-side together down at turn seven.
00:46:48So Frosty's down in 18th.
00:46:50Your race leader is Craig Lowndes.
00:46:52Safety car lights out,
00:46:53accelerating away from the field.
00:46:55Car triple eight, hold 80.
00:46:56From Jamie Winkup and Jason Bright.
00:46:59David Reynolds on track here for
00:47:03the top ten finish.
00:47:06Safety car is pit lane.
00:47:08And it's the two young Kiwis,
00:47:09Van Gisburgh and McLachlan.
00:47:11Another Kiwi, Fabian Kulfaner.
00:47:12Garth Tand has moved up inside the top ten.
00:47:15So away we go.
00:47:17Van restart by Lowndes.
00:47:19Way too sideways.
00:47:21Way too sideways.
00:47:22He's going to pay for it
00:47:23at the first turn.
00:47:24He loses the lead straight away.
00:47:26Winkup didn't miss a beat.
00:47:36Bright.
00:47:37Now tucked in behind Lowndes.
00:47:40It was weird, wasn't it?
00:47:41It went too early.
00:47:42Yeah.
00:47:43Too much turning to do at the end.
00:47:44We come off the corner two sideways
00:47:46and Winkup had a run on him.
00:47:47It was a bad restart.
00:47:48Only needed a couple of kilometres an hour
00:47:50and it was everything he needed
00:47:51to sneak down the inside at turn one.
00:47:54And it's handed it to him on a platter.
00:47:55But Jan Mostert's doing a great job.
00:47:59He's just outside the top ten.
00:48:00He's battling with Moffat.
00:48:02So that's change for the lead.
00:48:04Jamie Winkup now leading from Lowndes.
00:48:06Bright.
00:48:06Will Davison.
00:48:07Reynolds.
00:48:07This is Van Gisburgh and down the inside
00:48:09for fifth spot.
00:48:12Little bump.
00:48:14Oh, it's very wide.
00:48:17Got away with it.
00:48:18Tony Dalberto ended up pretty wide
00:48:22around there too.
00:48:40Unusual to see Craig Lowndes just make that
00:48:42minor mistake.
00:48:43Just look at what it's done.
00:48:51What is interesting is the gap that's opened out
00:48:54to Jason Bright.
00:48:55The problem here for James Courtney.
00:48:57A bit of tape flapping there.
00:48:58He was very wide in the turn in
00:48:59at turn six.
00:49:03All of a sudden, just on that last lap,
00:49:05Bright lost proximity to those two lead cars.
00:49:08Hey guys, they're here with David Wall.
00:49:10He's walking back down to the pits.
00:49:11Not very happy at all with what may have
00:49:13happened down at turn six.
00:49:14We didn't get any vision of it on the TV,
00:49:16mate, so we'd like to have your opinion.
00:49:19Yeah, look, Russell had a big dive bomb
00:49:21down in the inside of the corner there
00:49:22into turn six on the entry.
00:49:24I see him at last second, gave him a bit of room,
00:49:25ran into me, and then the next one
00:49:26pulled the upright out of the car, you know.
00:49:28So I don't know.
00:49:29I don't know if he's missed the pedal
00:49:30or something that's got on there,
00:49:31or maybe he's just losing his eyesight.
00:49:34Well, that might be the case.
00:49:35We're not sure, but obviously you two
00:49:37had that moment yesterday.
00:49:38He came in front of you,
00:49:39had that massive accident yesterday as well.
00:49:41So the serve you have been spending
00:49:42a little bit too much time in close proximity.
00:49:44Yeah, that's it.
00:49:45You're getting quite sick of it, to be honest.
00:49:47So, you know, it's a long year.
00:49:48We'll see what happens.
00:49:49David Wall from BJR.
00:49:51Thanks, Murph.
00:49:52And, yeah, yesterday was a qualifying incident.
00:49:55David Wall was on a fast lap.
00:49:57He would have been in the top five.
00:49:58Russell didn't see David.
00:49:59He was swerving on the main straight.
00:50:02They made contact and he had an unbelievable slide
00:50:06down the inside of the road.
00:50:07Ended up in the sand trap at Turn 7
00:50:09and, fortunately, no severe damage to that car,
00:50:12but it was a massive moment.
00:50:14And here we've got some drama unfolding
00:50:16with Garth Tander and Scott McLaughlin.
00:50:19Now, I think from the radio chat,
00:50:20Scott McLaughlin in the pit stop
00:50:22has still got the same left-hand rear tyre on,
00:50:25I think.
00:50:26So that would explain his pace.
00:50:28He was right up there at the back of the top five
00:50:31and since the stop has gone backwards.
00:50:34Jamie Winkup has just done the fastest race lap
00:50:36of the weekend, 56.66.
00:50:40Jason Bright's now three seconds away
00:50:41from the race leader.
00:50:42He's in third, so Bright chasing Lowndes
00:50:45but three seconds adrift
00:50:47because of that extra pace that Winkup's got
00:50:49as well as Moffat gets down the inside
00:50:51of McLaughlin at six.
00:50:52Wasn't it funny, like, in race 11
00:50:56we saw a little bobble in the pit stop
00:50:58for Fabian Coulthard
00:50:59where he slipped on the concrete
00:51:00but everything else that we saw, at least,
00:51:02was pretty textbook.
00:51:03In this race, when things suddenly fall out of order
00:51:06and there's a flurry
00:51:07because of safety car intervention
00:51:09or someone goes off the road
00:51:10and they all dive into the pits,
00:51:11we've seen problems with wheels jammed,
00:51:13guns not working,
00:51:15people getting tripped over others,
00:51:16not being able to get in and out of their bay.
00:51:18It just basically threw everybody
00:51:20and there are lots who've paid a price.
00:51:23Very true.
00:51:24There's been almost...
00:51:28..an unusual number of silly little mistakes,
00:51:32hasn't there?
00:51:32Basically, he's built it all the way through pit lane.
00:51:38Mark Winterbottom continues to move his way up this ladder
00:51:43and a bit of a rescue job going
00:51:46on what has been a disastrous third race.
00:51:49He's in 15th.
00:51:50About five to go.
00:51:52Five or six to go.
00:51:55He must be spot on, Skapie, I reckon,
00:51:57about Scott McLaughlin
00:51:58because he's a bit of a punching bag at the moment.
00:52:00They're all lining up to take a pot shot at him.
00:52:01This may...
00:52:08I expect to say with Mostert,
00:52:12this may get him into the top 10.
00:52:13So, yes, he's now 10th after the McLaughlin pass.
00:52:17So, that's a very good effort.
00:52:19James Moffat up to ninth.
00:52:21Garth Tander, tremendous fight back for Garth
00:52:25at his 200th championship event
00:52:28and up into eighth from 23rd.
00:52:32Fabian Coulthard, we saw the drama in the pit.
00:52:35He's seventh.
00:52:36Van Gisburgh and a Reynolds have had a race-long battle.
00:52:39Look, this complete line-up of cars
00:52:42from Lee Holtzworth back.
00:52:45He's in 13th.
00:52:47That's Mark Winterbottom down the inside.
00:52:49That's a good overtaking manoeuvre.
00:52:51Lee will try to do the criss-cross.
00:52:52And I can't believe they've gapped Jason Bright by that much.
00:52:58Bright's had unbelievable speed all weekend.
00:53:01And he's three seconds behind Lowndes now.
00:53:05Alex Davison down the inside of Blanchard.
00:53:09Gives him a bump.
00:53:11Probably shouldn't have turned in then, Tim.
00:53:14Well, they were side-by-side at that spot.
00:53:16Last lap through.
00:53:19Alex took a huge lunge at him.
00:53:22The previous time around.
00:53:25Before you know it, they end up, next time around, making contact.
00:53:30Here it is again in replay, but this time from the other angle.
00:53:32And Alex was a long way up.
00:53:34So it flicks the Wilson Security Falcon around from Dick Johnson Racing.
00:53:38A little 180, and he comes to a safe stop.
00:53:40Here it is again from a third angle.
00:53:41Yeah, it was certainly up far enough to be Alex Davison's corner.
00:53:47Increased Shell presence on that car.
00:53:50Looks good, doesn't it?
00:53:50Of course, Dick Johnson Racing had a wonderful association with Shell for years.
00:53:54It netted Bathurst wins and championships.
00:53:55It's good to have them stepping up their involvement with that team.
00:53:58So one second is the margin.
00:54:01Winkup to Lowndes now.
00:54:02We'll get a fresh read on that gap from Winkup back to Bright.
00:54:06It's 4.6 seconds.
00:54:07So Jason's not nearly as convincing.
00:54:09And if anything, Will Davison is clawing him in at the moment.
00:54:13Winkup and Lowndes are doing identical lap times.
00:54:1957 threes.
00:54:20And Scott Pyre makes a bit of contact with Darryl Lee, Commodore of Jonathan Webb.
00:54:27Pushes and shoves.
00:54:29Argues.
00:54:30Because it's a change.
00:54:31It was a different scenario on the previous lap.
00:54:34Because Webb got by.
00:54:35Scott Pyre at the same spot.
00:54:37So they're having a very good dice.
00:54:40Kelly is in 18th there in the Jack Daniels Nissan.
00:54:43He and Todd went up to Newman, one of the mining communities earlier in the week.
00:54:47They took the transporter and said it was like being on the moon.
00:54:51Just miles from anywhere.
00:54:53Nothing but rocks.
00:54:59Do you reckon the Scott Pyre versus Jonathan Webb deal's done yet?
00:55:03No.
00:55:04No, no.
00:55:04Because there was a dive at turn six.
00:55:06We're going to watch them in a second because they'll come into the back of shot.
00:55:09And Webb might just have enough gap on him this time.
00:55:13To get him clear of Scott Pyre for the breaking area.
00:55:16Young Scott McLaughlin's gone way back now to 13th.
00:55:19Mark Winterbottom just made that pass.
00:55:22And on the effort versus result graph.
00:55:25There's more effort being exerted here at the moment in the fight to the death of the 20th.
00:55:29But there's not a lot on the result side of that XY chart.
00:55:33It's very true.
00:55:33So it's amazing.
00:55:35And, you know, this is one of the things that the newcomers find is pretty tough about this level of the competition with these guys.
00:55:42This is all the way literally to last place.
00:55:44It's on.
00:55:45There is no relaxation.
00:55:46They're fighting pretty hard back there at the moment, these fellas.
00:55:50I can't believe, and we've said it all weekend, how wide.
00:55:53So that's Moffat who's got by Tander.
00:55:55So he was behind Garth Tander on the previous lap.
00:55:57So he's made a pass down at turn six.
00:56:00So that's a very good job.
00:56:01That's going to put James Moffat into eighth position.
00:56:03And if he stays there, season best result for James Moffat.
00:56:08What I was saying about the turning to Colb was how wide the Kelly boys are when they turn those Jack Daniels Nissans in versus the guys in the Norton cars.
00:56:19They've got two totally different lines down there.
00:56:21Dean Fiore and Alex Davison added here on the run through two and three.
00:56:24I think the best we've seen from the Alderman so far this year has been Rick Kelly with a seventh.
00:56:28So James Moffat's nudging up to being very close to delivering season best for those guys.
00:56:34It'll be three out of three top tens for James Moffat.
00:56:38It's going to be another Holden victory it seems.
00:56:42Jamie Wincup looking very, very strong at the moment.
00:56:45He just marched on with a gap.
00:56:48Great work boys.
00:56:49So it came one lap earlier.
00:56:52Then we expected a time certain finish at the death and Jamie Wincup makes it back to back.
00:56:58We made it a little bit difficult for ourselves.
00:57:00Not your fault, but good contact.
00:57:01Perfect.
00:57:01And that delivers Red Bull Racing Australia a clean sweep at Barbegello.
00:57:10Lowndes second, Jason Bright third.
00:57:15Incredible recovery when you consider that we...
00:57:18In that break we saw him skating off on the fluid.
00:57:22Roland Dane and his troops at Red Bull Racing Australia and there's the man.
00:57:26Like the tires, smoke the tires brothers.
00:57:28We don't need these.
00:57:30We don't need these, all right.
00:57:31They'll be well and truly done and dusted.
00:57:35Use them for coffee tables.
00:57:37But they've done a beautiful job, haven't they, these guys, this weekend.
00:57:41And as I said, that's a very impressive recovery.
00:57:43And remember that he's after title number five, Jamie, and a hat trick of titles.
00:57:47If he can pull it off, he's got the number one on the car.
00:57:49And look at that, James Moffat finishes eighth.
00:57:51But what about Chas Moster?
00:57:52Congratulations to the 21-year-old top ten in his first weekend of full-time V8 supercar racing.
00:57:59And that's a great reward for Dick Johnson Racing 2 for putting their faith in Chas.
00:58:03It's interesting.
00:58:04He went for a test pre-race to Morgan Park in Queensland.
00:58:08And Mark Winterbottom actually said at that point he'll be in the top ten in Western Australia.
00:58:12And that's exactly what he's delivered.
00:58:14So very impressive.
00:58:15And any time that anybody can jump into this field and be there,
00:58:18then you know that they're going to be serious players in the years to come.
00:58:23You can't find where he is.
00:58:24I think he's lost sight of the curb down there too.
00:58:26That's right.
00:58:27He ran over the curb a second ago.
00:58:29You're working out.
00:58:29There he is.
00:58:30He just came over the curb.
00:58:35He's not careful.
00:58:36When the smoke clears, he might find a wall sitting in front of him.
00:58:38Well, he'll either get hung up on that curb.
00:58:40Those tyres will be totally destroyed.
00:58:43They were bad before he started this process.
00:58:54Oh, dear.
00:58:55And there's young Chas.
00:58:55What a great drive.
00:58:59And this is invigorating for Dick Johnson Racing as well.
00:59:03Cooperation between their organisation and the boys at Ford Performance Racing.
00:59:07I was frankly surprised that he didn't get a run in the main game this year
00:59:10with some of the performances we saw from him in the Dunlop Series last year.
00:59:15So how's that when he can walk away from the first weekend?
00:59:17He admitted to us, I was speechless.
00:59:19You know, this is a hell of a game.
00:59:21I'm playing here.
00:59:22He walks away at three races with a 15th, a 15th and a 10th.
00:59:27He's in there somewhere.
00:59:29Where is he?
00:59:29Thanks, bro.
00:59:30Thanks, bro.
00:59:32Thanks, bro.
00:59:33It's smoky in here.
00:59:34It stinks.
00:59:35A little bit smoky.
00:59:40It's been incredible to watch Jamie Winkup at the start of this season
00:59:44with that steely focus of his and just having to be patient to wait
00:59:48for what he's been used to over the last few years, which is dominance.
00:59:54And now it's starting to come back to him, especially this weekend.
01:00:00So two out of two for today.
01:00:02And his teammate, of course, yesterday.
01:00:04Incredible, isn't it?
01:00:05Ford Performance Racing did the clean sweep here last year
01:00:08with Mark Winterbottom winning the first race
01:00:10and then Will Davison the final two
01:00:12and their rivals on the Holden side.
01:00:15Red Bull Racing Australia have now repeated that in 2013.
01:00:19Yeah, I want to congratulate this guy.
01:00:21Well done, Jamie.
01:00:23Mate, for me, the sign of a true champion driver and team
01:00:25is the ability to come to a circuit like you have this weekend.
01:00:28It wasn't ideal, mate.
01:00:29You said at the outset.
01:00:30But you've turned it around to race wins,
01:00:32been in the sand trap and still got the checker.
01:00:33Yeah, okay.
01:00:35Unbelievable team effort by everyone.
01:00:36You know, we've been fighting hard.
01:00:38I wouldn't say we've been struggling.
01:00:39But, yeah, we've really turned the wick up this weekend
01:00:42and hopefully we can carry this momentum on for the rest of the year.
01:00:45But big thanks to Lowndes.
01:00:46He didn't make it too difficult for me.
01:00:48We raced hard like we didn't race one.
01:00:50So, you know, both of us have been working hard to improve these cars
01:00:53and there's finally something to pay off.
01:00:55And we see the results of that, mate.
01:00:56People at home probably don't realise.
01:00:57I mean, I see you guys.
01:00:58You're here at night.
01:00:58You're sitting with your engineers.
01:00:59You're going through the fine detail, giving the feedback.
01:01:02And that's really what it takes, isn't it?
01:01:03It's a huge team effort, you know.
01:01:04And, you know, just getting one car up the front.
01:01:07Like I said, we've had a couple of good...
01:01:08I felt the win when Lowndes crossed the line first, you know, on race one.
01:01:13And hopefully he does the same in race three.
01:01:14I love it when you earn it, mate.
01:01:15And I reckon you've earned it today.
01:01:16So, well done.
01:01:17Hey, Craig Lowndes, I know you're going to be a little bit tough on you.
01:01:19It's been a great weekend for you in one regard.
01:01:21Best ever.
01:01:22However, a little blue on the restart there and let your buddy go by.
01:01:26Yeah, look, I think it was a combination.
01:01:27We didn't have a full set of tyres for that last run.
01:01:29So, I think that's what hurt us ultimately.
01:01:32You know, Jamie obviously had some great pace in that last race.
01:01:34And he deserved it.
01:01:35Like, as you said, he's been through the gravel trap.
01:01:36He's been through the wars.
01:01:37Managed to come back.
01:01:38So, look, it's been a great team effort for all of us.
01:01:40And, you know, as you said, hopefully the momentum kicks on.
01:01:43And I've just got to say hello to Levi and Chile out there.
01:01:45And, of course, you know, roll on Texas.
01:01:48Well, can't wait for that one, mate.
01:01:49A quick read on the weekend.
01:01:50Your highest high and your lowest low this weekend.
01:01:52Oh, I wouldn't say the lowest low.
01:01:53I think that, of course, the first race today,
01:01:56we had everything going against us.
01:01:57Bridie had a bad start.
01:01:58I thought I was reminiscing in Scafie's days in the old GDRs,
01:02:02trying to get the four-wheel drive traction off the grass.
01:02:04It doesn't work.
01:02:04So, we got back on.
01:02:06We stayed out of trouble.
01:02:07We had a problem in the pit lane.
01:02:09Those things are just part of motor racing, I think,
01:02:10that we'll obviously rectify that.
01:02:13We'll move on.
01:02:13And, as I said, yeah, look forward to Texas.
01:02:15Mate, a couple of old cattlemen, you and me.
01:02:16We can't wait to get over there.
01:02:18Jason Bright.
01:02:18Mate, look, I don't know what to say.
01:02:20I reckon you've had every capability to win this weekend.
01:02:22Things didn't quite go that way.
01:02:24But your cars, fast circuit, slow circuit, bumpy circuit, smooth circuit,
01:02:28they're fast everywhere now, mate.
01:02:29It must make you feel good.
01:02:30Absolutely, yeah.
01:02:30I think we certainly have the pace to win races.
01:02:32But, you know, when you're not sort of winning,
01:02:34it's still good to get a couple of podiums.
01:02:36And, you know, the guys did a great job in the pit stop there.
01:02:38We had a good set of tyres to go to the end there, a set of greens.
01:02:41But something went wrong after that last restart.
01:02:43And, you know, it's like our corner weights went out
01:02:45or we had a tyre going down
01:02:46and just couldn't turn right for love nor money.
01:02:49And there's too many right handers here.
01:02:51It's tough around here, Brody.
01:02:51I've talked about you a couple of times this weekend.
01:02:54Remember way back, maybe 10 years ago,
01:02:55you dropped a cylinder, a spark plug lead off,
01:02:57seven cylinders, still got on the podium.
01:02:59It goes to show how important drivability of the race cars here is,
01:03:02not necessarily power.
01:03:03Yeah, absolutely.
01:03:04That was a funny old day.
01:03:05That was a long time ago.
01:03:06You've got a good memory.
01:03:07But, yeah, no, it is a great track.
01:03:10You know, I love racing here.
01:03:11It's, you know, tyre life is so important
01:03:13and the cars are moving around
01:03:14and, you know, you can sort of work on people and get past them.
01:03:17But I want to say hello to Lucy and Lenny
01:03:19and my mum and dad who didn't make it this weekend.
01:03:20But, you know, I'll be at Texas.
01:03:22Well, yet again, great to see the BJR cars up there in the top three.
01:03:25Well done, mate.
01:03:25Cheers, mate.
01:03:27Well, there's some smiles down here at DJR.
01:03:29The vibe in here is fantastic.
01:03:30Obviously, a fantastic result by Chas Mosley.
01:03:33Start 11th, finished 10th, debuting here at Barba Gallo, mate.
01:03:37Solid result.
01:03:38Yesterday, obviously, you learned a few lessons.
01:03:39I reckon you managed to make it all work for you today a lot better.
01:03:43Yeah, for sure.
01:03:43Yesterday, you know, I went out the gun like I would in DBS, you know,
01:03:47burn up tyres a bit too hard.
01:03:48But after a talk or two of an engineer and that and all the guys give me a kick up the bum,
01:03:52you know, I decided to, you know, manage a bit at the start.
01:03:55And I'm lucky there's some safety cars in there because that all helps.
01:03:58Absolutely.
01:03:59And you go to a track that no one knows next time at Texas.
01:04:02I mean, that's going to give you a little bit of an advantage that obviously that,
01:04:06well, not an advantage that everyone else doesn't have either.
01:04:08So you're looking pretty good in respect to that.
01:04:11You can learn the track just like everybody else.
01:04:12And hopefully, you know, show us what you've got again.
01:04:15Yeah, that's a sure.
01:04:16And hopefully it looks after the tyres, that track a bit better than this one.
01:04:18But, yeah, looking forward to it.
01:04:20You know, DJR put a great car on the track today for me.
01:04:22And a big thank you to Wilson Security, Shell, and also Crimsafe.
01:04:26So thanks for that.
01:04:27And thanks for giving me the opportunity to be in this main series.
01:04:30Awesome job by Chas Mostert and the DJR team this weekend.
01:04:33Yeah, well done, Murph.
01:04:34And well said, Chas Mostert.
01:04:36And welcome to the V8 Supercar Championship.
01:04:38You have made your presence known straight away.
01:04:41So this is the championship picture as we head overseas to Texas for our next round.
01:04:46Jamie Winkup will take a 65-point lead there.
01:04:49So it's been a big swing around against Will Davison.
01:04:52Scott McLaughlin still inside the top 10.
01:04:55Let's get to the podium with Aaron Noonan.
01:04:57Time for the podium for Race 12 of the 2013 V8 Supercars Championship.
01:05:02In first place for Red Bull Racing Australia, Jamie Winkup.
01:05:04In second place for Red Bull Racing Australia, Craig Lowndes.
01:05:10In third place for Team VOC, Jason Bright.
01:05:15And representing the winning team from Red Bull Racing Australia,
01:05:19the engineer on car one, Mark Dutton.
01:05:23To present the third place trophy,
01:05:25the Honourable Alyssa Hayden representing the Minister for Tourism.
01:05:28Presenting the second place trophy, Ben Purcell,
01:05:37Managing Director of Brown's Chill.
01:05:44To present the winning team award, Paul Byles, Member for Waterloo.
01:05:52And the first place trophy to our winner,
01:05:54the Honourable Terry Waldron, Minister for Sport and Recreation.
01:05:57Ladies and gentlemen, your podium finishes at Race 12
01:06:04with the Chilper 360 at Barbagala Raceway.
01:06:14So two podiums for the weekend for both Craig Lowndes and Jason Bright.
01:06:19Jamie Winkup was up there all weekend.
01:06:22Two firsts and a second.
01:06:24And the championship lead to boot.
01:06:40So they've got themselves well and truly back into that winning groove,
01:06:44Red Bull Racing Australia.
01:06:45It was a tough start for those on the right-hand side of our screen
01:06:50because there was some oil down there left behind from the V8 Ute race.
01:06:54And as a combination of that and the fact that Mark Winterbottom got a really good start,
01:06:59Craig Lowndes went from second to third by the time they got to turn one.
01:07:02Murrow Engel ended up in the dirt.
01:07:04And then this was extraordinary.
01:07:06How they missed the wall is incredible.
01:07:08Both Todd Kelly and Alex Premmer.
01:07:10And not just the wall, didn't clobber anybody going through turn four.
01:07:14And that little bit of fluid that you saw coming from Murrow Engel's Mercedes-Benz
01:07:17was what tipped off these guys.
01:07:20Listen to that.
01:07:21Feeding in a gear, trying to stop at Mark Winterbottom.
01:07:23You can see Jamie Winkup in the foreground.
01:07:25And then to compound the drama, they had a problem with the right front
01:07:29and the wheel nut for Mark Winterbottom.
01:07:31And that just murdered him.
01:07:32Alex Davison had to bobble.
01:07:33Shane Van Gisburgen went through the Ford Performance Racing pit.
01:07:36That harmed his cause.
01:07:38Will Davison made a mistake and handed a position to Jason Bright.
01:07:41We thought Brightie was going to be stronger at the end.
01:07:43We just heard him explain that he had a drama.
01:07:46And that was the door skin coming off Scott McLaughlin's Fujitsu Holden Commodore.
01:07:50On the outside of him, there is Will Davison.
01:07:52There's David Reynolds tucked in behind.
01:07:57It's in that mid-phase of the race.
01:07:58It just erupted.
01:07:59And there was contact between Russell Engel and David Wall.
01:08:02Petters' STP safety car coming out while these cars were recovered.
01:08:07They were buried deep.
01:08:07And you can see suspension damage in the front right corner also of David Wall's car.
01:08:11And this was just a gimme.
01:08:13It was so easy for Jamie Winkup off the final corner.
01:08:17Craig Lowndes got crossed up.
01:08:19Didn't have a quick run onto the straight.
01:08:20Contact between Alex Davison and Tim Blanchard resulting in Tim having a quick rotation
01:08:24and stopped safely out of harm's way.
01:08:26But unfortunately dropped a heap of spots along the way.
01:08:29And then second straight victory today for Jamie Winkup.
01:08:33Not a bad position to end up in off the pole.
01:08:37And all of a sudden, as he said using his words from earlier in the day,
01:08:39the mojo is back and impressive performance.
01:08:44Yeah, absolutely.
01:08:45So it was Winkup, Lowndes, Brighton.
01:08:47I'll run you through the top ten.
01:08:48Will Davison finishing in fourth.
01:08:49David Reynolds in fifth.
01:08:52Shane Van Gisbergen was pretty cool too.
01:08:55He was up in sixth.
01:08:56With the Stoner family getting ready for what is coming up.
01:09:01A big, big crowd, as I mentioned.
01:09:02Over 48,000 have witnessed the chill Perth 360.
01:09:06So plenty more live racing.
01:09:08The third race of Dunlop Series with Casey Stoner in action.
01:09:11For our New South Wales and Queensland viewers, switch to 7.2 now.
01:09:14The more I see, the less I know, the more I like to let it go.
01:09:27Hey, oh.
01:09:30Whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:09:36Even in the color of another perfect.
