00:00:00You know, race two here yesterday was Fabian Coulthard's 200th career race, but he's waited until number 201 to finally get to the top step of the podium. Such a consistent performer this year, and some of these guys have been, well, completely and utterly spent at the end of the races.
00:00:20It's a different feeling when you're winning, and especially a guy like Fabian Coulthard, who loves to hoop it up. Huge numbers here today. The pit walk, they've been coming through, they've been coming from all over America. From Australia, of course, I've run into people from Virginia who've come here. I've run from two Aussies, one from Washington, the other from St. Louis who have come here, and they all agree that the Aussie V8s have really made a mark in America. You went for a wonder earlier, blown away by it?
00:00:46I am blown away. In fact, there's a guy who has got a corporate hospitality suite here, who's been to the MotoGP and Formula One, said to me a second ago, this is the best weekend he's ever had.
00:00:56Temperatures into the mid-30s in our language, and into the 90s Fahrenheit, and they continue to get hotter. And remember, another 27 laps, another 100km's hot, hard work for our drivers.
00:01:07But let's run you through the highlights of race 15 of the championship. You'll remember that it was an all Red Bull Racing Australia front row with Jamie Winkup starting on pole position.
00:01:16But the real winner out of the start would be Mark Winterbottom. He looked at the gap, he looked at all gaps, left, right and centre, and he made a charge early.
00:01:25It didn't work well for Craig Lowndes, who got hung out at the top of the hill there. And Winterbottom to the front, like that.
00:01:33That was a very good pass, Matt. Fabian Corbett also took the opportunity and got by at the same time, but that was a crucial part of the race for Mark Winterbottom.
00:01:41It was a really well-constructed pass. Winkup was in trouble. We saw his teammate get by him. He went from first to fourth.
00:01:49And at that stage, he looked like he was in real strife. Contact here with David Wall and Scott Pye. That was ugly.
00:01:54I don't know how Scott Pye didn't manage to flip it over and how David Wall ended up high on two wheels.
00:02:00So this was the critical moment for Mark Winterbottom. That thread just wouldn't work for them.
00:02:05On the rear right, and it cost him dearly. Set him down to seventh. You also saw Craig Lowndes cede there to Fabian Coulthard.
00:02:11Then some damage on the rear of Tim Slade's car. So that triggered the safety car.
00:02:17And this was the question for car number 14 that was under investigation. Did he maintain speed?
00:02:22Exactly. Currently looking at that, there was a bad restart for Rick Kelly, and then he was swamped by everybody.
00:02:28Tanner tried to get him. Tanner did end up getting by.
00:02:31So did Jonathan Webb. And then Winterbottom put pressure on Rick Kelly also. It was really intense.
00:02:37It was a good bump. A little duel there with Scott McLaughlin and Davison. They're all bumping each other.
00:02:42You can see guys three abreast. The intensity in the middle of the field was as good as it gets.
00:02:47This is really high quality racing. It's a great racetrack for these cars.
00:02:51Big, wide circuit, open, flowing. And this guy, when you've won and you've proven yourself this year,
00:02:58third win of the year for Fabian. Great drive.
00:03:00You've held off Craig Lowndes, the all-time race winner in our sport.
00:03:04You've held off Jamie Winkup, who has dominated in the last few rounds.
00:03:08And Fabian Coulthard is really a championship contender this year.
00:03:11I don't think there's any question about that. Bradley Jones Racing have got a handle on it.
00:03:15We keep saying it. There's a long way to go in this championship of 2013.
00:03:19He could well be there at the end.
00:03:21He could be. I mean, their consistency is really, really good.
00:03:23And the way it looks after its tyres, Matt, that's the thing in this category.
00:03:26Big horsepower, big powered cars with small tyres, they've got their handle on that in that aspect.
00:03:32The confidence is there.
00:03:34Let's take you down to the Holden Racing team and check in with Neil Crompton.
00:03:37Crompo?
00:03:37Thanks, Matt. A lot of work going on down here at the moment because, as you know,
00:03:40very tight turnaround between these races.
00:03:42I'm standing alongside Garth Tander's car, number two.
00:03:46Nice job for Garth. He finished position six in this race.
00:03:48But there's a legend in this garage I'd like to introduce you to.
00:03:52And it's not one of the guys that you might typically think that I would be talking about.
00:03:55There's a man down here who is in his mid-60s.
00:03:58He's a flight attendant by day.
00:04:00He moonlights in the motor racing business for the other days of the week.
00:04:05He's a guy that's worked in Formula One at Lotus, at Ferrari, sports cars at the highest level,
00:04:10where he met Tony Dow, who's just off to my right here.
00:04:13Here's Tony, who ran the TWR Jaguar program in sports car racing for many years.
00:04:17He's in NASCAR racing with people like Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:04:21In terms of Formula One drivers, Nelson, Piquet, Ayrton Senna, Mario Andretti, you name it,
00:04:25this guy's worked with him.
00:04:27His name is Kenny Zemanski.
00:04:29He is here.
00:04:30He's got a museum at home.
00:04:31He lives in New York, and he's decided to have a play in the V8 supercar business.
00:04:35I had the privilege to work with him a few years ago here in North America.
00:04:38Lovely to see you again, Kenny.
00:04:39It's great to be here.
00:04:40I need this experience on my resume.
00:04:42And I hope my friends Stevie Williams and NZ is watching.
00:04:45Now, why did you choose to be here when you've got such a resume,
00:04:49you've done so many things in motorsport,
00:04:50and you decided to come and play with us this weekend?
00:04:53Never done it.
00:04:54And you need to see how everybody else is operating.
00:04:56And Tony and Steve Helm were happy enough to contact me
00:04:59when their normal tire guy went down, so I was happy to step in.
00:05:04Just give us a little sneak preview of some of the gear that you've got
00:05:07tucked away in the museum at home.
00:05:09Ayrton Senna's right front from his first win in Portugal, 85.
00:05:12Mario Andretti's championship helmet from 78.
00:05:17Those are two big items.
00:05:18That's nice stuff.
00:05:19How do you rate V8 supercars in the scale of motor racing things
00:05:22that you've experienced in 30-odd years?
00:05:24Very exciting.
00:05:25And I'm looking forward to this last fourth race
00:05:29because I just said to one of the boys,
00:05:31are these guys all so gentlemanly with each other?
00:05:33He said, wait till the last one.
00:05:35Well, Garth's qualified quite well now for our last race today,
00:05:38and so he's in reasonable position.
00:05:39I left the circuit last night about 9 o'clock.
00:05:41I stuck my head in here to say hi to Kenny,
00:05:44and you were scraping away there.
00:05:45This guy is meticulous in his tire management.
00:05:47He's highly sought after.
00:05:48And you gave up a very big opportunity to be here this weekend.
00:05:52Oh, yeah.
00:05:52I was trying to get a job at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway,
00:05:55but I guess my resume wasn't complete enough.
00:05:58So hopefully this event will put me over the top for next year.
00:06:02I'm glad you chose us over the Indy 500.
00:06:04Thanks, Kenny.
00:06:04It's always good to see you.
00:06:05But we'll have a quick word to Garth Tander while we're in here.
00:06:08He was feeling jilted because I focused on Kenny rather than him.
00:06:11Excuse me.
00:06:12Nice job.
00:06:12Well done.
00:06:13Thanks.
00:06:14Did you meet Kenny?
00:06:14It's cool.
00:06:15I worked with him for a couple of years.
00:06:16He's a great guy.
00:06:17Yeah, yeah.
00:06:17No, that was...
00:06:18We made a change after qualifying.
00:06:20We found some stuff at qualifying,
00:06:22and that made the car better.
00:06:23We made another change for the race,
00:06:24but it did not like that hot track.
00:06:26So we're going to make another change back to more where we were in quali
00:06:30and see how it goes in race four.
00:06:32So as I said at the top of this little piece,
00:06:34sixth in that race,
00:06:35but you've qualified nicely for the next one.
00:06:36So if you've tickled it up,
00:06:37you might be in the game.
00:06:38Well, I actually said to the boys before that race,
00:06:40I said I want to learn in this one
00:06:41so we can make sure we get it right
00:06:42for the one where we qualified further up.
00:06:44So we'll throw our best guess at it.
00:06:46We've got some good tyres.
00:06:47Kenny's looked after us and we'll go racing.
00:06:48Yeah, you've got a good man in the corner there with Kenny Zemanski.
00:06:50Thanks, GT.
00:06:51Thanks, Crumpo.
00:06:52Yeah, Garth Tander will start the final race from position number three,
00:06:55so we can expect a lot more from him.
00:06:56I'm going to scoot off to the observation tower
00:06:58and give you a ripping view after the break.
00:07:00But remember yesterday,
00:07:01remember yesterday how I found you the best barbecue in Austin, Texas?
00:07:06Yes, yes.
00:07:06Well, on today's edition of Taste of Texas, Scafie,
00:07:09I'm going to find you the best burgers.
00:07:10I've unleashed some of the drivers out to Wild Bubbers.
00:07:21Welcome to Wild Bubbers.
00:07:32How y'all doing?
00:07:33It's going pretty good.
00:07:34I've got a bunch of wild game up here.
00:07:36I've got buffalo, antelope, elk, wild boar.
00:07:39Are you ready to order now?
00:07:46No, the F-1 burger is sweet for me.
00:07:48That's good.
00:07:59Hey, fellas.
00:08:00Welcome to Texas.
00:08:01I'm Wild Bubba.
00:08:02Hey.
00:08:03What have we got?
00:08:03Well, we've got barbecue grilled shrimp, bacon wrap.
00:08:06We do it the Texas way, but we did Australian barbecue sauce.
00:08:09I hope you enjoy that.
00:08:12This is going to be some of the best chili you've ever had in your life.
00:08:15It is kangaroo meat, but it's very popular here in Texas.
00:08:18And it's going to be very popular during the Aussie V8 races this weekend.
00:08:22There you go, an F-1 burger.
00:08:24Looking forward to seeing you guys at the race.
00:08:26You're glad you're here in Texas.
00:08:27Welcome to Texas.
00:08:28Well, there's no doubt no expense was spared when it came to creating this circuit.
00:08:49$400 million pumped into creating the ultimate experience for drivers and fans alike.
00:08:55And this is the centrepiece, the incredible observation tower.
00:08:59It's one of the first things you see, actually, as you come driving into the circuit.
00:09:03The details are just mind-blowing.
00:09:0577 metres in total.
00:09:07That's more than 250 feet.
00:09:09Where I'm standing, the observation platform level is 70 metres up.
00:09:13And there's a glass floor over there that you can see straight down.
00:09:16It offers an amazing view, not only of our circuit, but all the way back to Austin City.
00:09:21And over there is the University of Texas, 50,000 students, the biggest university in the United States.
00:09:28Their famous athletics program is called the Longhorns.
00:09:31And you reckon this circuit is good?
00:09:33Wait until you check out Memorial Stadium, where we send some of our drivers to get a taste of American football.
00:09:41Hi, JC here.
00:09:43In Texas, football is like a religion.
00:09:45And in Austin, this is their church, the Texas Memorial Stadium, home of the University of the Texas Longhorns.
00:09:51This place is massive.
00:09:54Holds 100,000 people every game.
00:09:56It's like the AFL Grand Final every weekend.
00:09:59A couple of the boys and I have been lucky enough to come down on here, on the turf,
00:10:03and be taught a few tricks by a couple of Longhorn greats who have made it to the NFL.
00:10:07Frosty, run!
00:10:08All right, so we're going to run you guys through some drills, so we need to get you in the proper attire.
00:10:20So we got these Texas jerseys.
00:10:22I got number one.
00:10:24Literally everyone's got it.
00:10:25Number one for you?
00:10:27You guys are all number one.
00:10:28You guys want to practice way of throwing?
00:10:37You got a white bench?
00:10:38You ready to answer?
00:10:40I'll just take it.
00:10:41Okay, you throw it.
00:10:43You want to grip the seams like this.
00:10:46And when you throw the ball, you want it to roll off your fingers in what we call a spiral.
00:10:50So a spiral, the ball should be coming to you like this, so you should see like a white circle,
00:10:55and that's where you want to catch.
00:11:07So you play two on two, and you would just play touch.
00:11:09So as soon as you just had to touch the person, the ball was down right there.
00:11:12Yeah.
00:11:12One, two, three, defense!
00:11:25All right, so one of the things that, to me, I think is kind of generic in general throughout
00:11:29all sports is celebrating once you score, right?
00:11:32And so it's in football, American football, in gridiron, you know, there's different dances
00:11:37that we do, okay?
00:11:38So what we're going to do now is we're going to have a contest, our team against your team,
00:11:41to see who has the best touchdown celebration, right?
00:11:44Here you go, this.
00:11:45All right.
00:11:46I did dancing with the styles.
00:11:47I got this.
00:11:47Hey, let's see what you guys have got now.
00:11:57Hey, let's see what you guys have got now.
00:12:27This is an amazing atmosphere here, and to pitch the first ball on the field, it's incredible.
00:12:54I've always wanted to come to an American sports event, and this just wrapped it up
00:12:59for me.
00:13:00It's been awesome.
00:13:01We're doing it in style, and really just enjoying every little bit of America.
00:13:06Lee Holdsworth throwing out the first pitch at Round Rock Express at Dill Diamond.
00:13:11That team, by the way, owned by Nolan Ryan, legendary pitcher alongside me.
00:13:15I have legendary commentator Bob Vash.
00:13:17I'm a very jealous man, Bob.
00:13:19I grew up playing baseball, and to see that, that is my dream.
00:13:22He went all right.
00:13:23He did.
00:13:23It looked like a slider to me, but, you know, Australia's got a great baseball tradition.
00:13:27We have a number of Aussies playing pro ball here in America.
00:13:30Bob, of course, has called motorsport at the highest level all around the world and is
00:13:34heading up speeds coverage.
00:13:35We are live on speed right now.
00:13:37It's great to have six hours of our V8 supercars on your channel across your country.
00:13:41So we wanted to tap into your expertise and your knowledge bank and just find out what
00:13:45you think, first impressions of this event and of our racing.
00:13:49Well, I think it's been spectacular, Matt.
00:13:51I apologize for the heat, but hey, with winter coming on down under, maybe it's not a bad
00:13:55thing.
00:13:55I'll say when you have the University of Texas graduating 8,500 students on the Saturday,
00:14:00and when you go down to 6th Street and the nightclub area in Austin, and all they're
00:14:03talking about is what's happening out at the racetrack, I'd say you've had an impact.
00:14:07A lot of people want to know how far can that impact go.
00:14:10So what is the relevance, do you think, of the V8 supercars in your American market?
00:14:14Well, as you can imagine, it's a very busy motorsports market here in the United States,
00:14:19so squeezing your way in can be tough.
00:14:21But I think what the Aussie supercars offer is a terrific package.
00:14:24We talked about it all during the broadcast today.
00:14:28The cars look great.
00:14:29They sound great.
00:14:30They race hard.
00:14:32They're fast.
00:14:33And the drivers aren't afraid to mix it up.
00:14:35And I think American fans appreciate that.
00:14:37So as long as we can get you on our soil, I think we'll be glad to have you here.
00:14:41You've been at Circuit of the Americas since it was just a whole bunch of dirt and sand
00:14:46and grass.
00:14:47To see Formula One race here just a few weeks ago, to see MotoGP race here, now to see our
00:14:52international category come over here and set up camp, it must be really gratifying.
00:14:58Well, it's terribly gratifying to the American sports fan to see the world wanting to come
00:15:02to a place here in the United States.
00:15:04It was a tremendous effort to get this facility built.
00:15:07It was expensive.
00:15:08It took a while.
00:15:09But it has turned out beautifully.
00:15:11And I think the ultimate vision for this track, and there is a great deal more to come,
00:15:15according to my sources, I think it'll just get better and better as the years go by.
00:15:19Of course, that puts a certain onus on the fan to come out and support the shows that
00:15:24are put on here.
00:15:25And that's where I think Australian V8 supercars can come into play as well, because they are
00:15:29already so popular around the world.
00:15:31And as the development of the series continues on an international basis, that'll only get
00:15:36bigger and bigger.
00:15:37This is the first time that American audiences have seen the national circuit, the modified
00:15:40circuit.
00:15:41Do you think that's been a success?
00:15:42Well, you know, it's interesting.
00:15:43To be honest, I wasn't aware until the last minute that we were going to be using a shorter
00:15:48circuit for this.
00:15:49And I understand the reasons for it to get the cars running by the grandstands more often.
00:15:53There are also fueling and tires and other issues when you're coming to a racetrack for
00:15:56the first time.
00:15:57So I'd say they acted conservatively.
00:15:59I know the drivers would like to have a shot at the full Grand Prix circuit.
00:16:03Maybe they'll get that opportunity down the road.
00:16:05I know they'd also like softer tires.
00:16:07They'd also like more power.
00:16:08They'd also like all those things race drivers want.
00:16:10Less understeer, less oversteer.
00:16:11There you go.
00:16:12The perfect race.
00:16:13Hey, talking about the drivers, they've been incredibly accessible.
00:16:16We're used to that.
00:16:17Are you guys used to that?
00:16:18Well, yes.
00:16:19I mean, it is hard in a market like the United States where there's so much going on.
00:16:22The drivers are pressed for time.
00:16:24You know, Formula One is the pinnacle of running to the motor coach and getting out of the way
00:16:29lest the press or the fans get a hold of you.
00:16:31But I have to say the V8 supercar drivers have been absolutely fabulous.
00:16:36You see them all over town.
00:16:37They're out at the sporting venues.
00:16:39They're out at the schools.
00:16:40They're out at the hospitals for children.
00:16:42They're out there taking part.
00:16:43They're out there saying good day to all the folks here in Austin.
00:16:46And I notice a lot of Stetsons and Boots are going back home in the briefcases.
00:16:50Now, we have signed a multi-year deal to come back here, and we can't wait to get back here.
00:16:54We've had a ripping time.
00:16:55I've got to tell you, what more do we need to do as V8 supercars to make it really stick in America?
00:17:01Well, I should start out by saying I am no promoter.
00:17:04But it seems to me that if you're going to be a true international series, you need international participation.
00:17:09Maybe it's not a full-time American team in the sport or even a full-time American driver.
00:17:13But the idea of having cars out there that drivers can be assigned to get some testing and have a whack at the regulars in the series, not for points, but just to go out there and give folks here in the States or wherever you go race, someone to cheer for, I think would be huge.
00:17:27Well, you know what, Bob, thanks for having us in Austin, Texas.
00:17:30Thanks for having us on Speed across the weekend, and great to catch up with you.
00:17:34You enjoy the next race because it's coming your way very soon here at the Circuit of the Americas, the Austin 400.
00:17:57It's been a long, hot weekend, but it's been a fun weekend, a successful one for Jamie Winkum, for Red Bull Racing Australia, and Fabian Coulthard.
00:18:09Big turnout of locals and expats and special guests as well.
00:18:13It's unbelievable, isn't it?
00:18:14There's Andrew Peacock, the former Liberal leader, Tim Matheson, the Australians called the first bloke, Julia Gillard's partner, his daughter Sherry, in behind there, a lot of the Holden dealers, Noel Gould, John Crennan there, he used to be the boss of HSV, Craig Kimberley, the founder of Just Jeans, Gary Van Egmond on the right there, the lifetime manager of ACDC, an unbelievable range of people.
00:18:36Tom Peters is the design director for Corvette, one of the heaviest weight GM executives in the world.
00:18:43That's a cool business card.
00:18:45Here's our track map.
00:18:47Final look at the location that we'll run out today for our last race here at the Circuit of the Americas for 2013.
00:18:53What a weekend it's been so far.
00:18:543.68 kilometres, 20 turns, anti-clockwise in direction, average speed approximately 140 kilometres an hour.
00:19:01That's about 88 kilometres, correction, 88 miles an hour.
00:19:05Close, hard racing's been the hallmark so far, and there's the field assembled, all 28 cars out on the grid.
00:19:10Been running around a bit, and it's 92 degrees out there, which is 33 or so in our language.
00:19:15Let's get the proper racing line, Larco, take it away.
00:19:18Yeah, thanks, Matty.
00:19:19Well, one of the obvious things we've talked about is that great big hill up the end, and as a consequence of that, let me just show you a little drawing I've done here, just a quickie.
00:19:28Here's the sort of hill there.
00:19:29Here, because a car generates downforce, if you didn't go near the brakes, it will generate downforce as you go into a hill, sort of like that.
00:19:37When you apply the brakes into there, that's massively more.
00:19:40Now, we're seeing around 2G of downforce.
00:19:44Now, I can tell you, we don't see that anywhere.
00:19:46So, that's the sort of braking performance we require.
00:19:48And there's a graph I just want to show you here that sort of demonstrates the circuit.
00:19:53Here we are.
00:19:54Now, this is a weird one.
00:19:54I've never seen one of these myself before.
00:19:56This is done via a GPS.
00:19:57So, this is an elevation map of the circuit.
00:20:00So, that's not a picture of the mountains around the circuit themselves, but that is the elevation.
00:20:04And that distance there is about 500, 600 metres.
00:20:08So, they rise up 24 metres and down about the same in that short distance.
00:20:13And that's where that braking's happening.
00:20:14Now, I've spoken a lot about pit stops and pit stop performance and the guys doing different styles of pit stops down there as a result of doing two tyres versus four.
00:20:23And I want to show you the pit lane entry in this next race.
00:20:26But just have a look at a little bit of a look at it.
00:20:28We did a bit of analysis of yesterday's pit stops.
00:20:30We've done 84 pit stops, including that last race now.
00:20:33Four of the top 10 pit stops.
00:20:35Who's done them?
00:20:36Red Bull Racing.
00:20:38Right?
00:20:38Now, it's no fluke that those guys are winning races.
00:20:41Four of the top 10 fastest, also done.
00:20:43Very impressive.
00:20:44By the Nissan team.
00:20:46Well done.
00:20:47Fastest two stops done so far.
00:20:49Red Bull Racing.
00:20:51Now, the way we analyse that, and teams should do this, and I know a lot of them do do it.
00:20:56There's two ways we can look at this.
00:20:57One, there's the pit stop itself.
00:21:00Two, there's the in-lap.
00:21:01The time the driver takes to come in that tight little pit lane entry, down the pit lane and back out again.
00:21:06And that's as important as any part of the track because valuable seconds can be made.
00:21:11And the way we do that, there's a timing line around the back of the circuit here.
00:21:14And so the cars come around, enter into the pit lane, and we've got our 40k timing line there where they put the finger on the button and the car's got to do 40km an hour.
00:21:22Now, we know the time from there to there.
00:21:24And I can tell you that bit's only a tenth of a second in sort of variability.
00:21:28We're seeing one and a half second variability between there and there, and I reckon it's all at that point there.
00:21:35And I'm going to go down there during this next race, and we'll have a look at that because, really, drivers, teams, and engineers should be treating that corner as important as any corner on the circuit.
00:21:45Let's get in there and have a closer look at it.
00:21:46Guys, I can't tell you how welcoming the circuit of America has been to us.
00:21:55John Paul DeGioia is one of the stakeholders here at the circuit.
00:21:58John Paul, it is amazing.
00:21:59You've welcomed us so well.
00:22:00Have you enjoyed having us here?
00:22:02Tremendously.
00:22:03In fact, Australia and Austin are very similar.
00:22:05Friendly people, exciting people, go out of the way to make everybody feel happy.
00:22:09At the car racing, have you enjoyed seeing these V8s?
00:22:11Because they're a bit unusual.
00:22:12Yeah, but they're unique.
00:22:13What I noticed most about them is they're fast and smooth.
00:22:16It doesn't even seem like they're going that fast.
00:22:18It's almost like one of those marquee yachts.
00:22:20Fast as hell, but smooth as can be.
00:22:23Very impressive, by the way.
00:22:24I hope you all come back here again.
00:22:26We'll be back, John Paul.
00:22:27Don't worry.
00:22:27And so many of your fellow Texans have turned out, too.
00:22:29It's great to see big crowds here.
00:22:30Yeah, because they've never seen anything like this.
00:22:32They wanted to test it, so they came out to see it.
00:22:34Of course, there's tens of thousands here, but I have a feeling next time you guys come here, you can even get in this place.
00:22:39We want to see what it's all about, and it is fabulous.
00:22:42It's exciting, and God bless you, Australians.
00:22:44You're such wonderful people.
00:22:46Peace, love, and happiness to all of you.
00:22:47Thanks, John Paul.
00:22:48It's great, and we've loved your circuit.
00:22:50It is magnificent, so congratulations.
00:22:51Well, we put a lot into it here.
00:22:53We didn't want to spare anything.
00:22:54We wanted to be a great circuit for everybody, so quite a few of us put some big bucks into it, but a lot of it was out of love.
00:22:59We were very proud to have that high quality here, and we're glad you appreciate it.
00:23:03All right, enjoy the race.
00:23:03Have a good time.
00:23:05John Paul, you're more than welcome to come down under with us for our next round at Darwin and bring the whole of Austin with you.
00:23:11Vince Young Jr. and Cedric Benson out there throwing the ball around to University of Texas Longhorn graduates and former NFL players.
00:23:21Fabian Coulthard has already got a race victory today.
00:23:25Can he wrap up this incredible weekend of racing at the Austin 400 with yet another one?
00:23:32Loving the Longhorns.
00:23:34We're going to go racing again right after this.
00:23:41Welcome back.
00:23:42Getting close to race time here, so let's head straight down to the grid and check in with Mark Beretta.
00:23:47Well, seventh throw of the grid for Will Davison, who's just being sealed up at the moment.
00:23:50But I'll tell you what, there are a lot of eligible bachelors that work in V8 supercars, and for Jake Dempsey, it's a big year this year because he is representing V8 supercars in the Clio Bachelor of the Year.
00:23:59Jake, are you ready for this big honour?
00:24:01I hope so.
00:24:03It's a bit of an honour to be part of it, I guess, and, you know, doing a bit for V8 supercars, and hopefully we can go all the way and see what happens.
00:24:11Excellent.
00:24:12Go for the ride.
00:24:12So, most importantly, voting started.
00:24:14Vote Jake is the message.
00:24:15Yeah, vote Jake.
00:24:16Head to the Clio Australia website or Ford Performance Racing website, Bottolo, Jalwin Racing Team websites, and, yeah, vote for me and see how we go with it.
00:24:26Good stuff.
00:24:26Thanks, guys and girls.
00:24:27He's a really good bloke.
00:24:28He deserves your vote.
00:24:30My vote?
00:24:30Okay.
00:24:31Fair enough.
00:24:34Thanks, Berets.
00:24:35As I mentioned before, Australia's Outback, the Northern Territory, that's our next stop on the V8 Supercar Championship Series in a few weeks' time.
00:24:43Hidden Valley Raceway, long history, great circuit.
00:24:47You can see the lot.
00:24:48Pretty similar temperatures, but not as uncomfortable as we've had today.
00:24:53Quite beautiful, and we get ready for the final race of this weekend.
00:24:58Live on 7 Sport back home, live to our regular international viewers, and live on speed here in the USA.
00:25:05I'm Matt White.
00:25:06Alongside me, as always, in commentary, Neil Crompton, respected voice of V8 Supercars, and six-time Bathurst winner and five-time Series champ, Mark Scaife.
00:25:15So, remember, they've already qualified earlier today for this final race.
00:25:19Jamie Winkuff stuck it on pole position.
00:25:21He'll have Fabian Coulthard next to him.
00:25:24Second row goes to Garth Tander and Jason Bright.
00:25:27Looking forward to that Sky City Triple Crown when we get to Darwin's return of the 60-60 Super Sprint format as well, and then two 120km races on the Sunday.
00:25:39Formation lap has come in.
00:25:40Always comes as a welcome bonus to escape the southern winter.
00:25:48Fusso starting grid.
00:25:50Let's have a look at the way they line up now for race number 16.
00:25:52From the pole position, again, Jamie Winkuff, Red Bull Racing Australia.
00:25:56Fabian Coulthard, great job in the last race, but still being investigated.
00:25:59Then it's Garth Tander, best qualifying performance for him this weekend, and he will be alongside Jason Bright with good tyre quality.
00:26:07Rick Kelly is next in the order.
00:26:09He's had his battles this weekend.
00:26:10David Wall has done a good job in qualifying for this one.
00:26:13Then Jonathan Webb, Shane Van Gisberg, and the teammates Michael Caruso and Mark Winterbottom.
00:26:17He was unlucky in the last race.
00:26:19And followed by Scotty McLaughlin and Craig Lowndes.
00:26:23He completely missed the jump for this one.
00:26:25Remember, he had the big understeer moment at turn 19.
00:26:27That cost him dearly.
00:26:29We'll work our way through mid-field.
00:26:30We've got a Nissan and a Commodore side-by-side for 15 and 16.
00:26:34Todd Kelly, Tony Dalberto.
00:26:36There's Alex Davison and James Courtney.
00:26:39Alex hasn't had a particularly good run here.
00:26:41He's been in the mix, but qualifying has hurt.
00:26:44Chas Mostert will be seated alongside the enforcer, Russell Ingle.
00:26:49James Mothat starting from 22nd.
00:26:52We just saw Team Bottolo.
00:26:55Scott Pye in 24th.
00:26:57Dean Fiore, Dodo Insurance Racing with Lee Holdsworth.
00:27:01Dino had a great time in the story that you saw out at Memorial Stadium throwing footies around.
00:27:05He's got his young boy here.
00:27:08Six months of age.
00:27:09Making it a real family affair like so many of our drivers and teams.
00:27:15So 45 degrees track temperature.
00:27:19Just while you're looking up the details on that one, Matt, that's a drop in track temperature compared to what we saw not so long ago.
00:27:25113 Fahrenheit.
00:27:28A lot of best qualifying performances for many of the guys in the field.
00:27:32Garth Tander, he's best qualifying for the year.
00:27:35In third, Rick Kelly, as we said, best qualifying in fifth.
00:27:38And Michael Caruso, best qualifying in ninth.
00:27:41On board now with Scott McLaughlin.
00:27:42We've got the field covered.
00:27:44So many of the in-car cameras for this final race of the weekend.
00:27:49And still five incidents under investigation relating to the previous race.
00:27:53With a tight turnaround, there's no way our judiciary can get through all that information.
00:27:57So there'll be a number of things looked at afterwards.
00:28:00And so keep an eye out on the V8 Supercars website for any updates in relation to that.
00:28:05Just on the subject of inside race control, I might quickly give a shout out to an old friend in there helping the Australian stewards.
00:28:12The third steward this weekend from the IMSA sanctioning body is Tim Mayer.
00:28:16And his dad, Teddy, who sadly passed away a couple of years ago, was an original founder of the modern McLaren Formula One team with Ron Dennis.
00:28:24Then he was the vice president of Penske Racing Cars.
00:28:28He was also involved in the Carl House Formula One Lola project.
00:28:34Now, his brother Tim, same name as the man I'm talking about, was killed at Longford in Tasmania in 1964 in the Tasman series.
00:28:42And still a plaque down there in Tassie in his honour to this very day.
00:28:46So Tim Mayer is helping the Australian stewards in race control at the moment.
00:28:51And an old friend, great to have him here watching the V8 Supercars.
00:28:54As you'd expect, everything is high-tech.
00:29:01Great crowd.
00:29:02This is such an enormous complex.
00:29:04One of the things that everybody's been asking is that people have been coming.
00:29:08In fact, they have in their thousands.
00:29:10All right, this is it, folks.
00:29:13The last one of the Austin 400.
00:29:15Jamie Winker on pole position against our last race winner of Fabian Coulthard.
00:29:21The VIP car of Shane Van Gisberger goes in search of some Benatrak on the inside.
00:29:30Side by side around turn one.
00:29:33Oh, a little crunch in the middle.
00:29:35It affected James Courtney, I reckon.
00:29:37A bunch of guys who were working unsuccessfully at the task of trying to make V8 Supercars go through their three and four wide at turn one.
00:29:49I thought they were pretty gentlemanly at the front.
00:29:51Middle of the field, it was pretty wild.
00:29:53But at the front of the field, they gave themselves a lot of racing room.
00:29:57And very contained, very measured start for the first four cars.
00:30:00And who's got what tyres left for this one is an intriguing question.
00:30:06Came to the event with seven sets of tyres for all four practice sessions, all four qualifying sessions, and all four races, including compulsory pit stops in each race.
00:30:15And Mark Larkin did a little synopsis on that on the whiteboard a little earlier.
00:30:19See Winkup just making sure that he was tight and covering.
00:30:22There's a move, webbed down the inside of Caruso.
00:30:27He did it cleanly, or at least to this point he has.
00:30:30There's not much in it.
00:30:31The problem with the nature of the racetrack is what looks like a great move on the previous corner could put you on the wrong side for the next one.
00:30:37So you've got to be quite strategic in how you pull those and be thinking ahead.
00:30:40It's like a Formula B race.
00:30:42You have to be a couple of corners down the road in your planning.
00:30:46Look at this.
00:30:49That was very close.
00:30:51That was very close for Jason Bright on Garth Tander there.
00:30:55He was probably up far enough.
00:30:56You've got to take those opportunities, and he didn't quite get that done, which made him vulnerable back to Rick Kelly.
00:31:03They had a great battle in the previous race.
00:31:05So Tander just slightly covers Bright.
00:31:08There's a bit of action going on behind there.
00:31:09Mark Winterbottom down the inside of Wall.
00:31:12And bang, there was always going to be contact with that.
00:31:15Turning to Alberto in that respect just then, he could have just breathed off the throttle and would have made.
00:31:19Both cars got round there without that level of contact.
00:31:24Now, Coulthard's tightened up a little to the back of Wind Cup here.
00:31:28So it's Tander, Bright, Rick Kelly, Van Gisbergen, Winterbottom, Wall, Caruso, Webb.
00:31:33That's the 10.
00:31:34Here's Todd Kelly.
00:31:35He's 19th in the field at the moment.
00:31:37And look at this.
00:31:37So he's threatening at the moment, Coulthard.
00:31:40He's able to take the absolute ideal racing line where Jamie at the moment just has to run a little defensive.
00:31:46He was like this early in the previous race.
00:31:48Dipped and then recovered somewhat.
00:31:50Oh, nice job, Fabian.
00:31:51Is he up the inside here?
00:31:52He's sliding.
00:31:53Can he make it?
00:31:54Hang on.
00:31:55No, it's exactly what I described a little moment ago where the crisscross process can mitigate against you.
00:32:01Now the long, sweeping right-hander.
00:32:04So Wind Cup has the advantage line here.
00:32:10Impressive.
00:32:10And impressive to watch these two guys doing this stuff again without exchanging paint.
00:32:15Or if they are, it's very light.
00:32:17Very light contacting, but if anything.
00:32:19Oh, he might be close enough to have a dive.
00:32:21He is.
00:32:22Get down there, Fabian.
00:32:23That was so close again.
00:32:25Problem with that, when it doesn't work, it makes his corner exit speed off 20 a little slower than he'd like.
00:32:30But he is giving him a big run.
00:32:33Gartan, the fastest around.
00:32:34At that time, beat by Mark Winterbottom and then Scott McLaughlin.
00:32:38So the youngest man in the field, the quickest at the moment, and turned around is the 360 Norton of James Moffat,
00:32:44who goes to the back of the grid.
00:32:48Now remember, we've been talking through the early part of the year about the change in configuration of Dunlop tyres this year.
00:32:54We've gone to the 18-inch control room and obviously changed in the tyre bag to suit.
00:32:58And we know that a lot of people are running certainly very unusual cold starting pressures
00:33:04because these tyres build temperature and pressure as they go.
00:33:07That goes hand in hand.
00:33:09In the early laps of the races, some of them are running very, very low pressures.
00:33:13And even their final hot pressures are much lower than we've seen in years gone by.
00:33:18Wright has another look on Tanda.
00:33:19Rick Kelly and Shane Van Gisbergen will be in that picture too.
00:33:25There's plenty going on.
00:33:26It starts to unfold.
00:33:27Kelly gives him a nudge.
00:33:28And another one.
00:33:32Shane's up on the inside.
00:33:33That's going to be messy.
00:33:36Still messy.
00:33:36That was actually quite wild.
00:33:45The manoeuvre that Rick Kelly was trying to put on
00:33:50ended up falling back another position.
00:33:55And that really come from Jason Bright not getting the job done earlier.
00:34:01Back to field back.
00:34:03And now, oh, Bright runs wide.
00:34:04He's off.
00:34:05Oh, that's hurt.
00:34:07That's hurt.
00:34:07Oh!
00:34:08He's got to be careful with that stuff
00:34:09because that could be a dangerous re-entry.
00:34:11And he carts Rick Kelly all the way across the circuit in doing so.
00:34:15He might cop a little finger wave from Cam McConville on that one.
00:34:19Look at this.
00:34:20It's game on.
00:34:21Caruso on the inside trying to make it three wide there.
00:34:24Off the road and wide is Jason Bright.
00:34:28Michael Caruso.
00:34:29He locked it up.
00:34:31Getting up the hill.
00:34:35So Bright's in this mix with Wall and Webb.
00:34:39Probably got away with that remarkably well, Jason Bright.
00:34:41Because when he was that far wide at turn 20,
00:34:44you hold your breath that he's not going to end up just dropping to the back of this train.
00:34:48Faster slap of the race.
00:34:49Jamie Wincup in the 34s now.
00:34:51One minute, 34.9.
00:34:53He's six-tenths further away now from Fabian Coulthard.
00:34:58Davison down the inside.
00:34:59That was a last-minute manoeuvre.
00:35:02That was ugly.
00:35:03And that was Alex Prima that he got.
00:35:05And it was right at the end of the braking area, Matt.
00:35:07We just saw it right up in the corner of the screen.
00:35:10And you can hear the wheels locked and contact for those two cars.
00:35:15There we go.
00:35:15There's Webb.
00:35:16Now, that's also a card off.
00:35:18He's pushed David Wall off the road.
00:35:19Steering damage on Will Davison's car.
00:35:21You heard all the tyre locking and squealing in the background.
00:35:25And look at that.
00:35:26Right rear is broken on that.
00:35:27Similar to what we saw with Scotty McLaughlin up at turn one yesterday.
00:35:31In fact, it's both ends.
00:35:33It's a disaster.
00:35:34So that's day done for Will Davison.
00:35:37Here's Shane Van Gisbergen up the inside of Garth Tander.
00:35:39That's for position three.
00:35:41So that's a podium, but it's not done.
00:35:43Tander comes back.
00:35:44He's played this game before.
00:35:47And in fact, Van Gisbergen, just in the process of this,
00:35:49has done the fastest lap of the race.
00:35:50Look at this.
00:35:51This is cool.
00:35:52Kelly and Winterbottom dicing behind them.
00:35:54Tander and Van Gisbergen.
00:35:55Who was going to blink first?
00:35:57Rick's well familiar with the signage on the inside wall of the pit straight at the moment.
00:36:00Look at this.
00:36:01Winterbottom has a look down the inside.
00:36:03Oh, Rick closes down.
00:36:05We've got a safety car.
00:36:07Gone yellow on the timing.
00:36:09Rick Kelly's off to Carbo in Mexico with his wife Alicia at the end of all this.
00:36:14He's going to need a rest.
00:36:15He's done some wheel work this weekend, Rick Kelly.
00:36:19That had the potential for catastrophe coming through there.
00:36:23That was wicked.
00:36:24So yellow flag.
00:36:26Watch this.
00:36:26DC to Car to Car.
00:36:27You need to pick up for a big Car one.
00:36:29Car one.
00:36:29Just stand by.
00:36:32Whoa.
00:36:33That looks...
00:36:33In fact, I think it looks worse from that angle,
00:36:35but this is the one that will raise eyebrows in race control
00:36:38because Jason tried to cover.
00:36:41In the end, it was in vain.
00:36:42Rick was getting a walloping as well.
00:36:44It actually helped him.
00:36:45He got a bump from Winterbottom, which pushed him forward,
00:36:48and McLaughlin parked.
00:36:50He's trying to pick where that is.
00:36:53It's a long way off the road.
00:36:55It would be hard to do that by yourself.
00:36:57Broken steering is the report.
00:36:59He was running just outside the top ten at that stage,
00:37:02so that's a real shame for Scotty McLaughlin.
00:37:09Field is compressed here at Circuit of the Americas
00:37:12on lap six out of 27 on our final day at the Austin 400.
00:37:16We hope you've enjoyed it.
00:37:18Well, Scott McLaughlin has not enjoyed that ride into the gravel.
00:37:21His day is done.
00:37:22Steering failure.
00:37:24Damage to the front of the Fujitsu Commodore.
00:37:26That's had contact for sure,
00:37:28so let's have a look.
00:37:30Top of the screen is where we're focusing our attention.
00:37:35So this is Davison,
00:37:36who I saw do the big dive-bond move.
00:37:39He does that, fires off,
00:37:42and we heard the tyre squeals,
00:37:45and then look back,
00:37:47and there's the contact with Scott McLaughlin and Davison.
00:37:50So both cars actually were very similar damage,
00:37:52but from side to side.
00:37:53So here's Scott just turning in,
00:37:55and bang.
00:38:00So that's the explanation for both those cars
00:38:03and the damage that they both incurred.
00:38:06Yeah, just to the Pepsi Max crew bunker,
00:38:08and Tim Edwards just having a look at that replay.
00:38:10Tim, steering problems for Will, obviously.
00:38:13Steering problem as a result of running into another car.
00:38:16So, yeah, obviously it's damaged both the front and rear suspension,
00:38:19so obviously we've only got sort of partial footage that you've seen as well.
00:38:23So it looks like he's dived down the inside and overshot a bit.
00:38:27All right, get him straight in.
00:38:28Well, he's out of the race.
00:38:30Both the front and rear suspension's damaged,
00:38:32so she's all over.
00:38:33Thanks, Tim.
00:38:34Yeah, and Brett's Wilbur has just jumped on the back of the golf cart.
00:38:37Larko?
00:38:38Yeah, down here with Richard Holway,
00:38:40who is Scotty McLaughlin's engineer.
00:38:41And, look, let's put aside the incident that just happened there, mate.
00:38:44It's a great year for Scott,
00:38:45and I know you personally, after working with Scaife in particular,
00:38:48must be refreshing working with McLaughlin.
00:38:50Yeah, fantastic.
00:38:51Yeah, no, he's a great young bloke.
00:38:53He has a go.
00:38:54You know, it's really, really good working with him,
00:38:59good feedback, really enjoyable.
00:39:01It's nice to just watch the dialogue
00:39:02or listen to the dialogue between you.
00:39:04We heard a little bit of it earlier today
00:39:05where he was having a little bit of a panic in amongst the traffic,
00:39:07and you said, mate, head down, that's what you're here for.
00:39:10And that's important, isn't it, mate?
00:39:11That's huge because the guy's got raw talent,
00:39:13and I think you're going to educate him well.
00:39:15Yeah, you certainly don't want to knock that out of him, mate.
00:39:17You know, like, it's great to see him make moves and have a go
00:39:20and, yeah, just keep that going.
00:39:22So, no, I reckon he's fantastic.
00:39:24Good job, Rich. Keep it up.
00:39:25Thanks, mate. Cheers.
00:39:26Scaife, is Larko getting a ride back to the hotel with you tonight?
00:39:28He won't be after that.
00:39:29No, please, please, because he brings his CD collection,
00:39:32but we have to take him home.
00:39:35Take a quick break.
00:39:37Be back soon.
00:39:41So that's the scene at the moment.
00:39:45Pepsi Max crew, FPR Falcon and Will Davison
00:39:49being loaded onto the back of the truck
00:39:50after the big contact,
00:39:53which also saw Scott McLaughlin go out.
00:39:57So two DNFs we can put in this list.
00:40:01We've got a compulsory pit stop to cycle through here as well.
00:40:04We've not yet reached that window,
00:40:05but this is preserving these tyres.
00:40:07It might see some people run longer now.
00:40:09They may not just jump in on lap 10,
00:40:11but that'll depend on whether they feel they're being held up
00:40:13and whether they can get an undercut advantage,
00:40:15but this will certainly give the tyres a reprieve.
00:40:18Gives a couple of drivers a little let-off here
00:40:20if they've had an out-of-phase start to the race.
00:40:24Keeps Rick Kelly in touch here at the moment.
00:40:26There's also going to be a post-race investigation car.
00:40:2917 cars.
00:40:3017, it's plural.
00:40:31And nine.
00:40:33So that's Tim Blanchard, Murrow Engel.
00:40:35There's Jimmy Stone making a welcome return to the paddock.
00:40:37He's in there at Erebus Motorsport V8.
00:40:39He's retired from participation in the full-time V8 Supercar Series.
00:40:45We are seeing him on occasion in the Dunlop Development Series.
00:40:49It's always good to have Jim in the paddock.
00:40:51He's a great character.
00:40:52He did some racing over here many moons ago.
00:40:55He's got a great pedigree,
00:40:56and he and his brother Ross have had one of the most successful
00:40:58Ford factory teams.
00:41:01It's obviously converted now into Erebus with Mercedes.
00:41:04But one of the great things, guys, out of this,
00:41:06we said it was a bit of a contained first few laps.
00:41:09I thought they were pretty tame,
00:41:10especially on the opening lap of the first four cars.
00:41:13But, wow, didn't it wind up?
00:41:15You know, and we know safety cars breed safety cars.
00:41:18So this will be very important
00:41:20because you want to be in the lead.
00:41:22You want to lead this race before the stop.
00:41:25He's back on Jimmy Stone and his brother Ross.
00:41:30Stone Brothers Racing, of course,
00:41:32was exactly where Marcus Ambrose,
00:41:34who our speed viewers know so well,
00:41:36now competing in NASCAR
00:41:37on his two V8 Supercar Championships in 2003 and 2004.
00:41:42He sent us a good message from Charlotte
00:41:44in yesterday's broadcast
00:41:46that wicked-looking beard of his.
00:41:48Yes.
00:41:49I'd send him some raisins.
00:41:50Touch of the John Bowers about him, hasn't he,
00:41:54with the beard from Tasmania and a successful racer.
00:41:56So that's Tim Schenck and the race director in the background.
00:42:00But you've got to dip your hat to Marcus Ambrose
00:42:01to come from this...
00:42:03I'll open the tunnel early,
00:42:04wait for my call of the safety car before you go.
00:42:06..from this form of racing to take on NASCAR
00:42:09and to do as well as he has.
00:42:11It's an extraordinary achievement.
00:42:13Congratulations to him.
00:42:14It's been a brilliant effort.
00:42:15And his former teammate, Russell Ingle,
00:42:18paying tribute to that as well
00:42:20with the Stanley sponsorship on Cast 66.
00:42:23And look at Fabian Kiltar.
00:42:24Hello, Jamie, I'm here.
00:42:26This is gamesmanship, guys.
00:42:29There's a fair responsibility as the leader in the pack.
00:42:32You're under pressure.
00:42:34He's gone.
00:42:37So he's tried one corner early
00:42:38to get that little gap
00:42:39to very good restarts by both of these guys.
00:42:43Garth Tanner got caught a little bit.
00:42:44In fact, Van Gisburgh will be in contention
00:42:46to get Tander at the end of the straight.
00:42:49So good job by Winkup and Coulthard.
00:42:51Look at this, all the weaving.
00:42:53It's Rick down the inside again,
00:42:55having to cover on the inside.
00:42:58So Tander, he's also shallow into turn one.
00:43:01Van Gisburgh in fourth, then Rick Kelly.
00:43:03Then it's Mark Winterbottom.
00:43:10Van Gisburgh have a good pace.
00:43:12Remember that our leading four cars,
00:43:17the GM product, the Holton Commodore here,
00:43:19successfully exit.
00:43:20Oh, God!
00:43:21Round goes.
00:43:21Big Sprezzo.
00:43:23360-degree spin.
00:43:26Gathers it back up.
00:43:27There'll be huge marks on those tyres.
00:43:30It's turned itself off.
00:43:32When the car's right backwards, it's turned the engine off.
00:43:36We might see another safety car as Rick Kelly.
00:43:40Oh, I reckon there was contact there with Mark Winterbottom.
00:43:42These two guys are having a little battle going on
00:43:46that's been raging since this final race started.
00:43:49So Wincup leads Coulthard.
00:43:51Tander and Van Gisburgh are going at it.
00:43:55Kelly and Winterbottom are blueing.
00:43:57Tander having to cover there,
00:43:58and he's getting some rat-a-tat-tat on the rear bumper
00:44:01from Shane Van Gisburgh.
00:44:03Just making the point before the big incident
00:44:04that the Holton Commodore successfully exported
00:44:07from Australia to the United States.
00:44:09It's a great program,
00:44:10and one of the reasons why the Holton Racing team
00:44:13have got the Aussie flag draped around the car,
00:44:15and now Tander sees the opportunity to come in
00:44:17and grab some tyres, Larko.
00:44:19And look at that, I don't know if you just saw Tander White.
00:44:21Look at these cars.
00:44:22This is this corner I was talking about.
00:44:23They're coming off the track behind me here.
00:44:25About 160km now.
00:44:2865km at this last point there,
00:44:30and there's the 40km sign up there.
00:44:32Time to be made, as we said.
00:44:34Got to treat this like a corner.
00:44:35That's Mark Larkham down at turn 19A.
00:44:39Well done, Larko.
00:44:41That's a really good point.
00:44:42There's more time to be gained in that little section
00:44:45than in the previous section of the track
00:44:47that you explained before.
00:44:49It's OK. Critical stop for Tander.
00:44:50He's up there and in contention.
00:44:51He'll get hurt here a little bit.
00:44:53He got hurt there a lot.
00:44:55Tim Slade diving in,
00:44:57and Tander had to take evasive action.
00:44:59There was contact right there with the SP Tools car.
00:45:03Yep.
00:45:03Murrow Engel and Jonathan Webb.
00:45:05Jonathan Webb nudged into him
00:45:07as Engel was trying to enter his lane.
00:45:09Lowndes is the winner.
00:45:10Lowndes is the winner out of that, Matt.
00:45:11He's jumped a couple of spots up into right in behind.
00:45:15Lowndes was way back,
00:45:16so he's jumped right up.
00:45:17Look at Engel.
00:45:18He's in no-man's land here.
00:45:19He needed to back off and drop in behind Blanchard.
00:45:21He's gone to the wrong side of the floppy.
00:45:23That'll be an immediate penalty.
00:45:25He needed to come out of the throttle and drop in,
00:45:28but he stayed with it.
00:45:30Now, let him through.
00:45:30There'll be a penalty for that for sure.
00:45:36So, back at the front.
00:45:38That's the gap from the leader back to Fabian Coulthard.
00:45:45So, more people dived in than I thought,
00:45:48especially when they were so close together.
00:45:50Now, Coulthard's taking the opportunity.
00:45:51What they'll be looking for here at Lockwood
00:45:53is the undercut.
00:45:54Getting another decent set of tyres on the car,
00:45:57but it's also good news for Wind Cup
00:45:59because he's released.
00:46:01Winterbottom.
00:46:02Winterbottom almost fired in the fence then
00:46:04coming into the pit where Mark Larkin was just standing.
00:46:06That's the spin.
00:46:08That was James Courtney into the back of Caruso.
00:46:13So, there might be some action in all of that.
00:46:17It's hard to adjudicate,
00:46:18and there's cameras in the cars,
00:46:20and so I think they're going to have a very busy evening here.
00:46:22Here's the man.
00:46:24It's peeled out.
00:46:25Pointy end of this race
00:46:26to get some more rubber on.
00:46:27They need a very efficient stop.
00:46:29It doesn't look like it wasn't a blinder.
00:46:31It wasn't good enough.
00:46:33They use light systems on the pit booms
00:46:36to determine when they get their cue to go.
00:46:38Watch this re-joint, Crombo,
00:46:39because this is going to be close.
00:46:42They're coming up the hill, going fast.
00:46:44Meantime Van Gisbergen's going quickly,
00:46:46and so is Wind Cup.
00:46:48So, this is a big strategic game here.
00:46:50Oh, I thought that Winterbottom might have ended up
00:46:55in between Tander and Lowndes,
00:46:57but he was just one back.
00:46:59At least for Coulthard,
00:47:00he's in clear air at the moment.
00:47:03That'll serve him well on a fresh set of tyres,
00:47:06but there was the bobble in the pit lane
00:47:08that will have cost him some valuable time.
00:47:10And you're right, Skaphy,
00:47:13the biggest winner out of all of that
00:47:15to this point is Craig Lowndes.
00:47:17He started this race in 12th.
00:47:21So, that was Tander.
00:47:22He thought twice about taking on Tim Slade,
00:47:24and then watch...
00:47:25Watch when the Daryl Lee car comes out.
00:47:28Here he comes, Jonathan Webb.
00:47:30Morrow Engel comes in.
00:47:32Will goes on board with Jamie Winkup,
00:47:34because this is a critical step for the race leader.
00:47:36And they're covering.
00:47:38Definitely saves the best for last of these,
00:47:39but they're covering at Red Bull Racing
00:47:50to make sure that Coulthard doesn't get an advantage.
00:47:52Larko?
00:47:53OK, now, we want to have a look at this stop.
00:47:55You remember I showed you Bridie's stop earlier on?
00:47:57Not to say it was wrong to use two guys,
00:47:58but you can see three here.
00:48:00Watch how efficient this is.
00:48:01Right, gun on.
00:48:03This guy grabs the wheel.
00:48:04He's the spare guy.
00:48:05Wheel on, bang, down, done.
00:48:08It was a slow departure,
00:48:10but it looked like a more efficient wheel stop than Coulthard.
00:48:15Here we go.
00:48:17It'll be close.
00:48:18In fact, I reckon Fabian might be a chance to grab him here.
00:48:21It'll be very, very close.
00:48:24He's got warm tyres.
00:48:25He's got to get the flow.
00:48:26He hit the kerb too hard.
00:48:28He hit the kerb too hard
00:48:30that it just hurt his exit a little bit.
00:48:31But for Jamie, it is tricky
00:48:33because he's got tyres on the rear of the car
00:48:35that are not up to pressure.
00:48:37So Fabian's got to be surgical here.
00:48:39He's got to slice through any little gap that arrives
00:48:42or it'll be parked under the rear wing
00:48:43for the rest of the race.
00:48:44And the critical spot is this one down here, guys.
00:48:47Look for turn 11.
00:48:48He's got to come onto this back straight
00:48:50right here now.
00:48:51He's got to have the run
00:48:52because turn 12 is his passing spot.
00:48:56Trouble also here for another Fujitsu entry.
00:48:59That's got to be Prema.
00:49:00Yeah, there was some smoke coming out of the back of that car
00:49:02along the main straightaway
00:49:03when these two resumed their battle.
00:49:08So from Jason Bright down to James Moffin,
00:49:11always through to eighth.
00:49:12They haven't pitted.
00:49:13And Jamie's doing the right thing in that cockpit.
00:49:17He's driving shallow, driving tight,
00:49:20making sure there are no big, open, lazy gaps left anywhere.
00:49:23Rapidly, those rear tyres come up to temperature and pressure.
00:49:28And then once they normalise,
00:49:30he's got the same fighting position as Fabian
00:49:32and then he's away.
00:49:33It already looks like it.
00:49:35So Webb's done the fastest lap of the race.
00:49:37A 1 minute 34.7 down in 15th
00:49:39and there's still four drivers,
00:49:41five drivers yet to take a stop.
00:49:43Take a look in the background.
00:49:44When you come onto the straight,
00:49:46there will be a battle there.
00:49:48We saw Tander and Lowndes close.
00:49:50Ben Gisberger has come out of the pit
00:49:51along between those.
00:49:52So then Gisberger will resume the battle
00:49:54that he has before the stop with Tander.
00:49:57He's got good speed at the end.
00:49:59He will be very aggressive.
00:50:02Three more cars into the pit lane.
00:50:03Scott Pye, Lee Holdsworth.
00:50:0734.4, fastest lap for David Wall on that last lap.
00:50:11Jason Bright's the leader of the race.
00:50:13We've seen evidence of him in the past
00:50:15and his team running long.
00:50:18But he had a pretty rugged start to this race.
00:50:20A lot of pushing and shoving.
00:50:21He qualified well,
00:50:22but it was a bit ragged at the start,
00:50:24so he might use this opportunity
00:50:25if he's got car speed to stay out there.
00:50:29That's a quick check of the leaderboard.
00:50:30Bright, Rick Kelly, Reynolds, Moffat.
00:50:34They will have to pit.
00:50:35Remember, as Crumpo said,
00:50:36the final stages.
00:50:38So here we are towards the final stages of the Austin 400
00:50:47with three cars yet to pit.
00:50:51They are Jason Bright, Davey Reynolds and James Moffat.
00:50:53Your effective race leader has just done the fastest lap of the race
00:50:56to 1.33.9 for Jamie Winkup.
00:50:59And here's a replay of it.
00:51:01Passing move just a little earlier, Van Gisberg,
00:51:03and down the inside nicely.
00:51:05Garth Tander left a little gap there.
00:51:06Didn't look like he quite had the pace.
00:51:08He may have let him go.
00:51:09Caruso's also in the list of people that needs to stop.
00:51:12He's down the order after the spin.
00:51:13There's Lee Holdsworth and Todd Kelly.
00:51:16Todd's just...
00:51:16I think there's not a corner on the car
00:51:19that hasn't seen some panel work so far this weekend for Todd.
00:51:22And a new fastest lap of the race, Jamie Winkup at 1.33.9.
00:51:25That's very quick.
00:51:26He's taken a little of the pressure off.
00:51:28He's just eased out.
00:51:29Look, it's only half a car length.
00:51:30Maybe a car length over Coulthard.
00:51:32But this battle continues.
00:51:34And what's going to happen here is that Van Gisbergen's pace,
00:51:36he was the lap record hold from yesterday.
00:51:38He's going to go forward.
00:51:40He's moved away from Tander after that pass that we just saw.
00:51:43But Tander's going to be the cork in the bottle.
00:51:45But these guys are all going to...
00:51:47Craig Lowndes especially is the guy that's got the job to do
00:51:50to get by Tander.
00:51:52But you can see there the group behind.
00:51:54Coulthard's responding.
00:51:56Fastest man to the second timing intermediate.
00:51:58That's just coming out of turn 15.
00:52:00We had a shot up there a moment ago.
00:52:02The man who came to this event.
00:52:04Position two in our championship series, Will Davison.
00:52:07He's only just joined us.
00:52:10And Will out of the race.
00:52:12Contact early on.
00:52:13Lots of damage with Scott McLaughlin.
00:52:15Are you aware of the saying,
00:52:18if you build it, they will come?
00:52:20Well, if you bring the biff and barge and bash of Aussie V8 supercars,
00:52:24they certainly do.
00:52:25More than 68,000 is our attendance figure
00:52:29over the three days of the Austin 400.
00:52:31Congratulations, circuit of the Americas.
00:52:34Well done, V8 supercars.
00:52:36Thank you, Austin, Texas.
00:52:38And, Matty, I've got to say, being down here in the pits,
00:52:40how fantastically enthusiastic the Texan audience are.
00:52:43When a car overtakes, they stand up and they cheer.
00:52:46When Scotty McLaughlin came back out onto the circuit from being in the garage,
00:52:50they gave him a huge round of applause.
00:52:52They get it and they like it.
00:52:54They're a great sporting crowd.
00:52:55So, Kultard, 33.9.
00:52:59I mentioned his split to the second timing intermediate.
00:53:02So, he's just eclipsed the time set by Jamie Wynn.
00:53:05Cut the lap earlier by a tiny, tiny margin.
00:53:08And Van Gisbergen, as Mark predicted earlier,
00:53:10is going on with this at the moment.
00:53:11And he's fast on his set of splits as well.
00:53:15Said he more than 68,000.
00:53:16The actual number, 68,891.
00:53:20What a success story.
00:53:24So, Brighton, as I said a little bit earlier,
00:53:27often when he finds himself just boxed out of position,
00:53:30tends to make the decision with his guys,
00:53:33led by Andrew Edwards in there at the engineering group,
00:53:35to run long.
00:53:36He's doing that at the moment.
00:53:37He's got a margin of eight seconds from David Reynolds,
00:53:39then James Moffat.
00:53:40So, three cars at the top of the field to pit.
00:53:43And then further down,
00:53:43we've got Michael Caruso in 12th yet to pit two.
00:53:46Will Davison just back in the garage.
00:53:48Will, that was a nasty tangle with Scott McLaughlin.
00:53:51Yeah, was it, Scott?
00:53:51Was it?
00:53:52Well, I wasn't sure.
00:53:53It was whoever it was.
00:53:55Yeah, it was my bad, my mistake.
00:53:57It's been a tough weekend for us.
00:53:59But in those opening laps,
00:54:01it was by far the best the cars felt.
00:54:03And we were all over Craig Lowndes.
00:54:06I tried to pass Craig twice at turn one.
00:54:08And then he made another mistake in front of me
00:54:11and I was outbraking Craig down into turn 12.
00:54:14And obviously misjudged the braking a little bit.
00:54:18Or, you know, I had to go quite narrow to pass Craig
00:54:20and I locked the rear brake.
00:54:22And whoever the car in front of him was,
00:54:24Scotty, I've hit him pretty hard.
00:54:25So he was an innocent bystander and I felt pretty bad.
00:54:28But what can you do?
00:54:30It was pretty crazy in the mid-pack.
00:54:32And, yeah, very disappointed.
00:54:34I don't like making errors like that.
00:54:35Very, very costly.
00:54:36Particularly in the...
00:54:37Actually, the car felt, as I said, good.
00:54:38So, tough weekend.
00:54:41Will, on to Darwin next.
00:54:42But first, you're going to play Spectator for a couple of days.
00:54:44Yeah, I was looking forward to that.
00:54:46Not really at the moment.
00:54:47I'm kicking myself a lot.
00:54:48It's been a tough weekend.
00:54:49Very costly.
00:54:51But, yeah, we'll chill out for a few days.
00:54:53I just want to get to Darwin now to put this right.
00:54:55All right, all the best.
00:54:56Thanks, cheers.
00:54:57It's a good pick-up because that incident,
00:55:00we saw Will Davison so far this year be so consistent
00:55:02and do a really good job.
00:55:05The lead Ford driver in the series.
00:55:07And that incident has a big bearing on this championship.
00:55:11Very costly.
00:55:15Some juicy mid-pack paddles going on here
00:55:18as we take you uninterrupted now to the chequered flag.
00:55:22The race 16 at the championship.
00:55:27David Reynolds leads the field on the time shifts and on the road,
00:55:31but he still has to do his compulsory pit stop.
00:55:35So, it comes down to a battle between Winkup and Coulthard yet again.
00:55:40Look at this.
00:55:40Scott Pye with Russell Engel.
00:55:43Rubbing paint.
00:55:43And then Russell says, how do you like that?
00:55:51Welcome to the big lead, Scott.
00:55:54And that's Russell Engel in full flight.
00:55:56David Reynolds has now come into the pit lane
00:55:58and that leaves Jamie Winkup back up in the lead of the race.
00:56:00Look at the intensity of this mid-pack battle.
00:56:03And Mark Beretta before was trying to get Will Davison
00:56:05to tell us what his plans are in the coming weeks.
00:56:07He didn't really answer the question,
00:56:08but he's going to spend time with his old friend, Will Power,
00:56:11who yesterday qualified sixth for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500.
00:56:16That'll be a thrill.
00:56:17They're great friends.
00:56:18He wants to go there and support him
00:56:19as Will tries to hunt up a win in the greatest of races.
00:56:23He's been a runner-up in that championship series the last three years, Will.
00:56:26So, that's going to be a great weekend for him.
00:56:29Yeah, Neil, speaking of some of our legends of Australian motorsport
00:56:31who have fanned out around the world,
00:56:33Chad Reid here in the garage here,
00:56:35our motocross world champ.
00:56:37Chad, great to see you here, mate.
00:56:38Racing last night, went in Sacramento
00:56:39and made it here today to be with the boys.
00:56:42Yeah, I made a prior commitment a couple of weeks ago.
00:56:44I actually got a chance to come out,
00:56:45drive the car here at MotoGP weekend
00:56:47and had a blast.
00:56:49So, I raced yesterday.
00:56:50It's obviously tough to take a red eye,
00:56:52but it's worth it when you get here.
00:56:53It's great to see you here.
00:56:54Now, your season, you were just coming into a busy phase.
00:56:57Yeah, we just started our first round of our nationals yesterday
00:56:59and, you know, so we won one round of 12 deep now.
00:57:03And, yeah, hopefully this series is going to be a little better to me.
00:57:05I mean, the supercross was tough,
00:57:06but outdoors didn't start any better for me.
00:57:09So, it's going to be a rough year,
00:57:10but, you know, we'll grind away.
00:57:11Fingers crossed, man.
00:57:12All the very best.
00:57:13It's great to see guys like you Australians out there
00:57:14doing your best on the world stage also.
00:57:16Thanks, man.
00:57:17I appreciate it.
00:57:17And, actually, it's quite weird to be here in my country
00:57:20where I live now
00:57:20and have all you Australians here.
00:57:22So, it's actually quite exciting for me
00:57:24to see VA supercars in the U.S.
00:57:25Enjoy it, Chad.
00:57:26Thanks, man.
00:57:27Cheers, thanks.
00:57:27He's a real legend.
00:57:29Staggering results.
00:57:30He does some amazing things on two wheels.
00:57:32James Courtney's going to spend some private time with him
00:57:34after this race meeting as well.
00:57:35Now, Michael Caruso and Chas Mostat,
00:57:39they are in quite an exchange here at the moment.
00:57:40Caruso, 13th.
00:57:42Mostat, 14th.
00:57:43Dave Reynolds, 15th after his pit stop.
00:57:461.4 seconds is the gap.
00:57:47Wink up to Coulthard, then Van Gisbergen,
00:57:49still carrying that good pace.
00:57:52Tander's hanging on from Lowndes.
00:57:53He's got a very good exit, then, Chas Mostat.
00:58:02Off turn 19.
00:58:03He's trying to convert that
00:58:04and the run out of the final corner
00:58:06because he knows that the Nissan might be a little vulnerable
00:58:08here in a straight line.
00:58:09So, Michael dives to the inside.
00:58:11David Reynolds sees a big gap open up in the middle
00:58:14and disappear just as quick.
00:58:18This is where it's hard
00:58:19because you can't keep an eye on everybody in your mirrors
00:58:22when all that's going on.
00:58:23So, Reynolds gets a gain here.
00:58:25So does Mostat.
00:58:26That was a problem, I think, for Caruso.
00:58:28He didn't come off the hill properly at all.
00:58:29Because he hasn't stopped,
00:58:31he's basically pulled himself out of that dice.
00:58:34So, he's the last car still not to have made that stop
00:58:37after the spin we saw in this complex.
00:58:40Surprised that he didn't end up carrying more tyres
00:58:43as a result of that big spin.
00:58:45It was fast.
00:58:45So, Winkup, Porthard, Van Gisburgh and Tander Lounge,
00:58:56Winnebottom, Kelly, Webb, Bright, Courtney.
00:58:59That's your top ten.
00:59:00The reason why was right when all that was going on,
00:59:03Caruso just got the call to come in,
00:59:05so it corresponds with exactly what he just said, Mark.
00:59:07So, he knew there's no point in Caruso going on with that
00:59:10because after he does the stop,
00:59:11he's going to drop a few spots.
00:59:13Looking out the rear of David Reynolds.
00:59:15Now we're looking out the front.
00:59:16You'll see on the side, car 360 of James Moffat
00:59:19right on board to catch that action
00:59:22and that move from James up to 14th.
00:59:25Looks very good in the middle of that corner, doesn't it?
00:59:29The car had great mid-corner speed.
00:59:32Moffat now searching for Chas Mostert.
00:59:36So, Moffat in 14th.
00:59:38Chas Mostert just up ahead.
00:59:39We're with David Reynolds in 15th position
00:59:42with the Bottle-O Falcon.
00:59:43That big, high-intensity segment in the middle of the race
00:59:48where Wincup and Coulthard were trading
00:59:50faster sector splits and faster slaps of the race.
00:59:53It's eased off now.
00:59:55And Wincup has just gone out to a 2.1-second lead
00:59:58over Fabian Coulthard.
01:00:01So, for the moment, that gap is just beginning to extend.
01:00:05His Garth Tander, his fourth.
01:00:06Lowndes, Red Bull Racing Australia, fifth.
01:00:09Then it's Winterbottom, sixth.
01:00:10Then Rick Kelly hanging on at seventh.
01:00:11On target for another top-ten result.
01:00:15Jonathan Webb, Darryl Lee, Choffman's in the background.
01:00:21And then Jason Bright, James Courtland.
01:00:24Sorry, Moffat.
01:00:24I thought that Garth was going to be the guy
01:00:27that was struggling in that group,
01:00:28but it's actually hung on quite well.
01:00:30Jason Bright now with really good tyres on that car
01:00:33coming through the field.
01:00:34And I thought he had that done.
01:00:37Then he probably could have turned across.
01:00:40He's done the criss-cross now.
01:00:42Remember, the next corner goes to the right.
01:00:43He's probably done the mature thing there
01:00:45rather than slice and dice.
01:00:46He's just been a bit patient.
01:00:48It's cost him to hold him up
01:00:49for this chunk of the lap.
01:00:52It's got those fresher tyres on.
01:00:53And that will mean that he's got much better mid-corner speed
01:00:56and certainly much better traction in the second-gear corners.
01:00:59Oh, look.
01:01:01Webb, he runs super wide at turn 19 out in the AstroTurf.
01:01:04So that was just a gift for Jason Bright.
01:01:07So he steals the spot.
01:01:10Three left.
01:01:11Three left.
01:01:11And that brings him up into eighth position, Jason Bright.
01:01:14Still been an unhappy weekend
01:01:16for a considerable pace he had in Western Australia last time out.
01:01:20Oh, oh, oh.
01:01:21He's pushing the brake pedal on and off
01:01:24to try and modulate and deal with it.
01:01:26He's dropped the spot and he will have marked the tyre.
01:01:29Oh, he's going to hang on on the inside here.
01:01:32This is crazy stuff.
01:01:35I love that stuff.
01:01:36And Jonathan Webb actually coming out of the throttle
01:01:38and that was quite smart.
01:01:39But he knows that Bright has got fresher tyres.
01:01:42He knows the speed that Bright has got at the moment
01:01:45is superior to his.
01:01:47And he just came out of the throttle
01:01:48to make sure that he could get across
01:01:50and no contact as they went into that one-lane complex.
01:01:53And he will remember what happened in race 13 yesterday
01:01:56when they were all newbies
01:01:57and decided that it might be feasible
01:01:59to be two and three wide on the run down through there.
01:02:01And they all found out in a real hurry
01:02:02that all that ends up happening
01:02:03is you visit the boonies at very high speed.
01:02:06So he backed away from that.
01:02:08The question here is whether or not
01:02:09there's any damage on Jason's tyre.
01:02:11It looks like it might be OK at the moment.
01:02:13The reason why there was the sort of on-off smoke signals
01:02:16coming from Jason Bright's car
01:02:17is he's modulating the brake pedal,
01:02:20which means he's going on and off, on and off, on and off.
01:02:22So trying to do two things,
01:02:24stop the car but also release the locked wheel
01:02:27at the same time.
01:02:28Didn't do a bad job of it.
01:02:29Because when the wheel's locked,
01:02:31you can't make the car change direction.
01:02:34And that's what the automated function
01:02:36of anti-lock braking or ABS does in our road cars.
01:02:38It protects us from some average driving on occasions.
01:02:41That's Vince Young Jr. stepping up to the plate there
01:02:45for the duties of the chequered flag.
01:02:48He's getting a lesson from Damian White.
01:02:51The quarterback with the Philadelphia Eagles.
01:02:56As I mentioned before,
01:02:57a graduate of the University of Texas.
01:02:59We also said it's graduation weekend this weekend,
01:03:01so Austin's been a busy town.
01:03:03And a big, big, big blow
01:03:05for James Moffat
01:03:07on approach to turn one.
01:03:09Great situation, Lewandis Chas Mostyn.
01:03:11He saw him coming.
01:03:13He turned the steering wheel down the other way,
01:03:15opened the gap and avoided an accident.
01:03:17Smart move.
01:03:22That's big.
01:03:23We've seen a few of them up there, haven't we?
01:03:25We have.
01:03:26We're going to see some more action here.
01:03:27This is not over.
01:03:28Bright's just done the fastest sector split
01:03:30through the first sector of the racetrack.
01:03:33Turn five.
01:03:35He's hunting down Rick Kelly at the moment.
01:03:38He's got just a little over one and a half seconds.
01:03:41So they renew their battle from the previous race.
01:03:47Yes, they do.
01:03:48Look at this, Mostyn.
01:03:49Again, having a go with James Moffat.
01:03:53I love this.
01:03:56It's almost like Chas knows we're on board with him.
01:03:59Because every time we switch the camera to the cockpit,
01:04:02he decides to get the elbows out.
01:04:05We've seen flat shifting there,
01:04:07pulling the six-speed sequential gearbox.
01:04:11The Albans unit where there's a transaxle,
01:04:13that's a differential and gearbox all as one unit behind the driver.
01:04:17A little bit of heel and toe, break.
01:04:20A little blip of the throttle and downshift.
01:04:22We go back to our leader.
01:04:23Jason Bright, meantime,
01:04:24fastest lap of the race.
01:04:25New lap record in the process.
01:04:27A one-minute 35.3.
01:04:29Jamie Winkup's got a 2.9-second lead, Matty.
01:04:3233.5.
01:04:35What do I say?
01:04:3635.5.
01:04:37You've had a switch again.
01:04:39Too many aeroplane rides.
01:04:41This man's had a great weekend, though.
01:04:43Been on the podium all the way.
01:04:47He's just been unstoppable.
01:04:48When he gets into this kind of groove,
01:04:50he is so hard to catch.
01:04:54It's a masterclass.
01:04:55Often when Jamie Winkup's behind the wheel,
01:04:58it's been that way for quite a few years.
01:05:01Defending series champ,
01:05:02going for three on the trot
01:05:04and five overall championships.
01:05:06He's racking up the numbers, as we said.
01:05:08This will be win number 70 for his career
01:05:11in just 283 races.
01:05:18Incredible strike rate.
01:05:20He makes it look so easy.
01:05:24He's had ultimate pressure from Fabian Coulthard.
01:05:27Shane Van Gisbergen will step on the podium
01:05:29for the first time this weekend.
01:05:33But at the end of 400 kilometres, 248 miles,
01:05:37that's a Texan triple for Jamie Winkup.
01:05:42Number one, Nassie.
01:05:44First year, great stuff, guys and girls.
01:05:48Awesome.
01:05:49Three out of four.
01:05:52Sorry, brother.
01:05:53Sorry about race three.
01:05:56I do believe we don't need tread depth on these guys.
01:05:58Just watch your distance.
01:05:59But like the five, watch the tires, brother.
01:06:01Signals to Jamie.
01:06:09Smoke it up and celebrate.
01:06:13End margin, 2.7 seconds.
01:06:17It's still very quick at the end there
01:06:19for Winkup and Coulthard.
01:06:21They were still well and truly in the 34s.
01:06:27Turns out when you look at the lap speed
01:06:29that Jason Bry had on those new tires
01:06:31when he's punched that 33.5,
01:06:32it might have got onto them earlier
01:06:33and got a little bit more out of them.
01:06:35That's what I thought.
01:06:36So it was probably a little bit late, that call.
01:06:39He did do a really good job.
01:06:40He got Rick Kelly at the end there
01:06:41and to get to seventh position
01:06:43was a good fight back.
01:06:45But he struggled all weekend for pace.
01:06:47Good drive.
01:06:48James Courtney starting 18th and got to 10th.
01:06:51But this battle all weekend
01:06:53with Winkup and Coulthard
01:06:54has been very, very good.
01:07:03So three poles and three victories
01:07:06and a track where nobody had been to.
01:07:10Here we go.
01:07:18No wonder he's very good at that circle work.
01:07:30He's been able to do it a lot over the years.
01:07:3270 race wins.
01:07:33He wasn't that good early.
01:07:35Remember he crashed at Simmons Plains
01:07:37when he did it.
01:07:37Well, I was talking to him at the time.
01:07:39So great to see Shane Van Gisbergen
01:07:43on the podium.
01:07:45Garth Tander in fourth.
01:07:46Good run.
01:07:47The HRT pilot, car number two.
01:07:50Jonathan Webb and James Courtney
01:07:51making up our top ten.
01:07:53Chas Mostert.
01:07:53We were riding with him
01:07:54as he bumped his way through the field yet again.
01:07:5715th for Chas.
01:07:59Another impressive performance.
01:08:01And a difficult weekend for Will Davison.
01:08:04He was heartbroken
01:08:05after making that mistake
01:08:07and ploughing into Scott and McLaughlin.
01:08:09So they were your two DNFs.
01:08:15Yes, we do.
01:08:18Especially the people of Austin, Texas
01:08:20and circuited the Americas.
01:08:23It made us feel very welcome.
01:08:26And for Jamie Winkup,
01:08:27well, there's no doubt
01:08:28this guy will want to come back.
01:08:30He's got a fair international pedigree with it, hasn't he?
01:08:34His win-strike rate is extraordinary
01:08:37and the celebration
01:08:39is very much deserved.
01:08:46Very much deserved.
01:08:48Great drive.
01:08:51Barretta's down there
01:08:52as Jamie just
01:08:56celebrates with the team first.
01:09:00Remember he managed to flick that door open
01:09:02to get a gulp of fresh air in qualifying.
01:09:04That was very funny
01:09:05but it just shows you
01:09:06how much of a hard weekend it's been.
01:09:08He'd do anything to cool down
01:09:09even risk giving away pole position.
01:09:11Different helmet bent
01:09:12on the top of the helmet today.
01:09:13Talking about fresh air.
01:09:14He made a little mod to that last night
01:09:16just to make sure
01:09:17that he could get
01:09:17as much driver comfort as possible.
01:09:20Certainly served him well.
01:09:22Well, he's celebrated with the team now.
01:09:23He'll celebrate with us.
01:09:24Jamie, congratulations.
01:09:26If there's an international champion
01:09:27of V8 supercars, mate,
01:09:29you are it.
01:09:29Well done, don't we?
01:09:30Love Texas.
01:09:31It's not getting any cooler.
01:09:32That's just your words
01:09:33but I couldn't be happier right now.
01:09:36Big thanks to everyone
01:09:37for coming out.
01:09:38All the Australians
01:09:39that flew over.
01:09:40Obviously all the locals.
01:09:42Unbelievable event.
01:09:44Yeah, big thanks
01:09:45to all the crew
01:09:46at Red Bull Racing.
01:09:46They did a phenomenal job
01:09:47and I'll take this one and run.
01:09:50It's a great unknown
01:09:51coming here.
01:09:52It always was
01:09:52but the track,
01:09:54the car,
01:09:54you,
01:09:54everything just clicked here.
01:09:56Yeah,
01:09:56it's a multi-million dollar
01:09:58state-of-the-art place,
01:09:59you know,
01:09:59and love good quality places
01:10:01and yeah,
01:10:02it means a little bit more
01:10:04to get that first win.
01:10:05So,
01:10:06fingers crossed
01:10:06you can come back here
01:10:07for years to come.
01:10:08Jamie,
01:10:08congratulations.
01:10:09You're in the record books.
01:10:10Well done.
01:10:11A magnificent weekend too
01:10:12for Fabian Coulthard
01:10:13and Shane Van Gisbergen.
01:10:16Fabian,
01:10:16to you first.
01:10:17Well done.
01:10:17It's been a magnificent weekend
01:10:19of duelling for you
01:10:20with Jamie Winkup.
01:10:21He got you this time.
01:10:22Yeah,
01:10:22look,
01:10:23the car's fast.
01:10:24You know,
01:10:25the thing you suffer from
01:10:26being behind,
01:10:26being the car behind,
01:10:27everything gets hot
01:10:28and things like that.
01:10:29So,
01:10:29you know,
01:10:29I didn't have the car speed.
01:10:30My opportunity was
01:10:31when he was coming out
01:10:32of the pits
01:10:32and I missed it.
01:10:33So,
01:10:34you know,
01:10:34credit for those boys.
01:10:35You know,
01:10:35done a fantastic job.
01:10:36Like Jamie said,
01:10:37you know,
01:10:37thanks to all the crowd.
01:10:38They've done awesome.
01:10:39Everyone that's followed us
01:10:40from over and from Australia
01:10:41and even as far as New Zealand
01:10:43has been awesome.
01:10:44So,
01:10:44just like to thank
01:10:45our sponsors,
01:10:46Lockwood,
01:10:47you know,
01:10:47all the guys at BJR,
01:10:48even the guys back at work
01:10:49that don't get to come away.
01:10:50It's been a pretty good weekend.
01:10:51And now for you,
01:10:52most importantly,
01:10:53on to Darwin
01:10:53who are a sponsor of yours already.
01:10:55So,
01:10:55you'll almost be on home ground.
01:10:56Yeah,
01:10:57look,
01:10:57it's going to be awesome.
01:10:58So,
01:10:58hopefully get in a spot of fishing
01:11:00and things like that
01:11:00as we get along.
01:11:02But,
01:11:02yeah,
01:11:02it's awesome to have
01:11:03the Northern Territory on board
01:11:04and,
01:11:04yeah,
01:11:05look,
01:11:05hopefully we can do
01:11:06what we've done here in Darwin.
01:11:07Well done,
01:11:08Fabian.
01:11:08You should be very proud
01:11:09of your weekend.
01:11:09Congratulations.
01:11:10Cheers.
01:11:11And Shane Van Gisbergen,
01:11:12it's taken all weekend
01:11:13to get it done.
01:11:13You've fought hard
01:11:14and you've got on the podium.
01:11:15Well done.
01:11:15Yeah,
01:11:16we started with a DNF
01:11:17which was a bit of a shame
01:11:17but that race was awesome.
01:11:18Plenty of passing
01:11:19and plenty of action.
01:11:20It was great.
01:11:21You've enjoyed the circuit here?
01:11:22Oh,
01:11:22it's been a great trip
01:11:23but sorry to Andrew and Simon
01:11:25back at home.
01:11:26Sorry they can't make it
01:11:27but it's all good.
01:11:28Excellent,
01:11:29mate.
01:11:29Congratulations.
01:11:29Enjoy the podium.
01:11:31Cheers.
01:11:33Okay,
01:11:34we'll just grab a chat down here
01:11:35with the Holden Racing team boys.
01:11:36Sorry to interrupt there,
01:11:37James.
01:11:38Hey,
01:11:39position four for Garth,
01:11:40position ten for you.
01:11:41Give us the Texan wrap,
01:11:42mate.
01:11:42This has been pretty good
01:11:43for the team.
01:11:43Oh,
01:11:44we're only happy
01:11:45when we're winning
01:11:46but,
01:11:46you know,
01:11:47today qualifying,
01:11:48the second one
01:11:49was a bit of a nightmare
01:11:49for me.
01:11:50We qualified 18th
01:11:50so it was a good run
01:11:51for the 22 car
01:11:52to get back to 10th.
01:11:53You know,
01:11:54we just haven't got the pace
01:11:55to run with the other guys.
01:11:56They can just take it up
01:11:57in extra gear
01:11:57but yeah,
01:11:58we're sniffing around
01:11:59and on a good day
01:12:00we can maybe pick up
01:12:01the bottom of the podium
01:12:02or,
01:12:02you know,
01:12:03a four or a fifth
01:12:04so we've still got work to do.
01:12:06You know,
01:12:06we're still getting our head
01:12:07around the car
01:12:07and the independent rear end
01:12:09and,
01:12:09you know,
01:12:09all that sort of stuff.
01:12:10We've got a lot of updates coming
01:12:11so yeah,
01:12:13you know,
01:12:13all in all
01:12:13it's not too bad a weekend.
01:12:15It's definitely not where HRT,
01:12:16myself,
01:12:17Garth,
01:12:17everyone here wants to be.
01:12:18We want to be winning
01:12:19so we'll be,
01:12:21we'll get there everyone.
01:12:22I know it's going to interfere
01:12:23with your holiday plans
01:12:24but I just want to talk about
01:12:25the racing a bit more.
01:12:26Mate,
01:12:26where do you really think
01:12:27this track and this heat
01:12:28when you combine the two
01:12:29rate in terms of toughness
01:12:31on our circuit
01:12:32in Bank of Australia?
01:12:34Well,
01:12:34Garth and I both agreed
01:12:35it was probably as hard
01:12:36as Homebush yesterday.
01:12:38Just with this format as well,
01:12:39it's crazy how quick,
01:12:41you know,
01:12:41it's only 35 minutes
01:12:42or something.
01:12:42So,
01:12:43you know,
01:12:43the footballers have a game
01:12:44and then they've got a week off
01:12:45before they do anything
01:12:46and we're back to back each day
01:12:47with 35 minutes in between
01:12:49and then do it again
01:12:50the next day.
01:12:50So,
01:12:51yeah,
01:12:51not only is it crazy hard on us,
01:12:53you know,
01:12:53physically but on the boys as well
01:12:55for them to turn the cars around
01:12:56it's,
01:12:57you know,
01:12:57it's pretty tight.
01:12:58So,
01:12:58you know,
01:12:59hat goes off to the boys.
01:13:00They did an unbelievable job
01:13:01this weekend.
01:13:01Nothing went wrong with the car.
01:13:03But,
01:13:04yeah,
01:13:04we're just going to get some more
01:13:04speed out of the thing like that.
01:13:06Right,
01:13:06mate,
01:13:06well,
01:13:06you've got the Texan suntan on.
01:13:07You've been here for three weeks.
01:13:08Just quick,
01:13:09give us a wrap of the experience,
01:13:10mate.
01:13:10What do you got to say?
01:13:11Unbelievable.
01:13:12I don't know if I'm going to go home.
01:13:13It's,
01:13:13you know,
01:13:13we went out on Austin Lake.
01:13:15It was unbelievable.
01:13:16So nice.
01:13:17It's beautiful here.
01:13:18If you haven't come this year,
01:13:19you've got to buy a ticket
01:13:20and make sure you come next year
01:13:21because it is,
01:13:22it's like Australia and America.
01:13:23It's not that crazy American.
01:13:25It's more Australian than American here.
01:13:26And quickly,
01:13:27your Texan phrase.
01:13:28Y'all,
01:13:29y'all.
01:13:30I don't know.
01:13:30I'm fixing to eat.
01:13:31I'm hungry,
01:13:32y'all.
01:13:34Well done,
01:13:35Larko.
01:13:35Well done,
01:13:35James Courtney.
01:13:36I could not find anybody here
01:13:38who has had a bad time
01:13:40watching this race
01:13:41or heading out in Austin City.
01:13:44So championship wise,
01:13:45what does it all mean?
01:13:46Jamie Winkup now,
01:13:47142 points clear
01:13:48of his teammate,
01:13:50Craig Lowndes.
01:13:51You remember that Will Davison
01:13:52was second coming into the weekend.
01:13:53So Will has dropped down a spot
01:13:55and Shane Van Gisbergen
01:13:57just keeps moving quietly
01:13:59through that top 10 list
01:14:00with top 10 performances.
01:14:02But today he is on the podium,
01:14:04which is where we're going to head
01:14:06for the final trophy presentation.
01:14:09Race 16,
01:14:102013 V8 Supercars,
01:14:12Austin 400.
01:14:14Would you please congratulate
01:14:15our winning driver
01:14:16in first place
01:14:17for Red Bull Racing Australia,
01:14:20Jamie Winkup.
01:14:23In second place
01:14:26for Lockwood Racing,
01:14:28Fabian Coulthard.
01:14:31And in third place
01:14:32for Techno Team VIP,
01:14:36Shane Van Gisbergen.
01:14:39Representing the winning team,
01:14:41Red Bull Racing Australia,
01:14:42is Mark Dutton.
01:14:45And back to the presentation
01:14:46of the third place trophy
01:14:48is Eduardo Margain,
01:14:50Circuit of America's
01:14:51guest of honour.
01:14:54Making the presentation
01:14:55of our second place trophy
01:14:57is John Bolenda,
01:14:59Circuit of America's
01:15:00guest of honour.
01:15:05Making the presentation
01:15:06to our winning team
01:15:07is Jim Crowley,
01:15:08head of operations ISIS.
01:15:10And presenting the first place trophy
01:15:16is Philip Berber,
01:15:17Circuit of the America's
01:15:19guest of honour.
01:15:21Ladies and gentlemen,
01:15:22the 2013 V8 Supercars,
01:15:25Austin 400,
01:15:26race 16 winners.
01:15:28Quite an extraordinary run
01:15:32from Jamie Winkup
01:15:33to turn off
01:15:34at a circuit
01:15:34that he's never seen.
01:15:37Same as everybody else.
01:15:39And provide a weekend
01:15:40of domination
01:15:41and champagne spray.
01:15:43And I reckon the guys
01:15:54from Red Bull Racing Australia
01:15:55are going to have
01:15:56a fairly sizeable party
01:15:57this evening
01:15:58in the city of Austin,
01:16:01which is not hard to do,
01:16:02by the way.
01:16:05So let's run you through
01:16:06the highlights
01:16:06of the day's racing so far.
01:16:10Really hot day here
01:16:11up into the 90s.
01:16:13Mid-30s
01:16:14of our temperature.
01:16:17So Jamie Winkup
01:16:18already had pole position
01:16:19locked in
01:16:21from earlier in the day
01:16:22and resumed a battle
01:16:23with Fabian Coulthard
01:16:24from the get-go
01:16:25with Fabian winning the race
01:16:27before, you'll remember.
01:16:28So he started
01:16:29on the front row.
01:16:31Have a look here
01:16:32on the inside
01:16:33up at turn one.
01:16:36Michael Caruso
01:16:37locks it up.
01:16:40Michael Caruso
01:16:41would feature
01:16:41in the highlights
01:16:42through later on.
01:16:45So that was the moment
01:16:47where Will Davison
01:16:48just couldn't control it.
01:16:49Feel this.
01:16:51Crutch for Scott McLaughlin.
01:16:53End of both of their days.
01:16:56Big, big damage
01:16:57to car number six
01:16:58and deep into the sand
01:16:59and also damages
01:17:00you'd expect
01:17:01to car 33.
01:17:02I mentioned Caruso
01:17:03would feature in the reel.
01:17:04There he goes.
01:17:05360 for car 36.
01:17:08A bit of action
01:17:08in pit lane.
01:17:10Garth Tander
01:17:11lucky not to collect
01:17:12Tim Slade
01:17:13but
01:17:14Murrah Engel
01:17:15did collect
01:17:16Jonathan Webb
01:17:17as Webb
01:17:18came out.
01:17:20Good gain there
01:17:21from Craig Louncy.
01:17:22Go on to finish
01:17:23in fifth
01:17:23after starting
01:17:25from 12th
01:17:26and being on the podium
01:17:27up to that stage
01:17:28of every race.
01:17:30Fabian Mulfard
01:17:32took a lot
01:17:33of that inside
01:17:33curve as
01:17:34Jamie Winkup
01:17:36came out of pit lane
01:17:38and this was
01:17:39a great battle.
01:17:40Tander
01:17:40versus
01:17:40Van Gisbergen.
01:17:44Todd Kelly.
01:17:45Thank you ma'am.
01:17:46That's been the story

01:18:06these beautiful
01:18:06AMG Erebus

01:18:09I'll start with
01:18:10Mario Engel.
01:18:10I think, I mean
01:18:11it hasn't been
01:18:11a great weekend
01:18:12for you guys
01:18:12but I think
01:18:13we've got to accept
01:18:14very much still
01:18:15in the development phase
01:18:16so you can't be
01:18:16totally unhappy.
01:18:18Absolutely, Lyco.
01:18:19You know,
01:18:19it's a development
01:18:20phase, development
01:18:21program so
01:18:22Perth was definitely
01:18:23a step forward.
01:18:24Here I guess
01:18:24it was a small
01:18:24step backwards
01:18:25but we'll come back.
01:18:26You know,
01:18:26we've got a great team,
01:18:27great people working there
01:18:28so we'll come back.
01:18:29And you've travelled
01:18:29the world, mate,
01:18:30racing cars
01:18:30but tell us about
01:18:31your Texan experience.
01:18:32You've enjoyed it?

01:18:34racing in the US
01:18:35for me.
01:18:36It's been absolutely great.
01:18:37The crowd has been
01:18:38fantastic
01:18:38and I'm looking forward
01:18:40to coming back next year.
01:18:41Good on you, Mario.
01:18:42Lee Hilsworth, mate,

01:18:50of days to enjoy
01:18:51Austin and
01:18:52the people are great.
01:18:54The track's awesome.
01:18:55We had a fantastic time.
01:18:56We can't wait
01:18:57to come back next year.
01:18:58I think they loved
01:18:59having us here
01:19:00and we got a massive crowd
01:19:01but, you know,
01:19:02the racing was tough for us.
01:19:04It's a bit frustrating
01:19:05but, you know,
01:19:06we knew it was going
01:19:07to be a long road
01:19:07so we've just got
01:19:08to stick it out
01:19:08and hopefully there's
01:19:09the light at the end
01:19:11of the tunnel
01:19:11and hopefully it's not a train.
01:19:13Yeah, and I do,
01:19:13I'll say it again
01:19:14but I think we've just
01:19:14got to acknowledge
01:19:15that it is a development
01:19:16period that you're in
01:19:17and it's going to take a while.
01:19:18This doesn't happen
01:19:19anywhere else in the world
01:19:19like this.
01:19:20You'll get up there quick.
01:19:21Tim, give us a heads up.
01:19:22When can we expect
01:19:22the next phase
01:19:23of performance improvement?
01:19:26Tough question.
01:19:27Should we get the engineers
01:19:28out here, I think?
01:19:29As soon as possible,
01:19:30I hope but, you know,
01:19:32as Morrow said,
01:19:32we had the first
01:19:33of our upgrades at Perth
01:19:34and, you know,
01:19:35it's a bit of a gap now
01:19:36so there'll be a bit of chat
01:19:39between Australia
01:19:40and Germany
01:19:40and see what we can
01:19:41come up with for Darwin.
