Sometimes an unlikely candidate can heat up an election race. In the Mexican city of Xalapa, two students decided to nominate a cat for mayor.

The kitty named Morris has a Twitter account and a Facebook page. He vows to “rid the city of rats”, which is a nice way of saying he promises to remove lying politicians from the area.

Although the ‘cat for mayor’ campaign started out as joke, Morris is getting a serious amount of attention. The cat’s Facebook page has more than 75,000 likes so far.

One of the students behind Morris’ social media pages stated “Candidates here almost never fulfill their promises. Our candidate promises to sleep, eat, yawn and play in the dirt and that is what he will do if he wins the election.”

Morris’ name will not be on the ballot on election day, however voters are urged to write his name down or a picture of a cat in order to send a message concerning the lack of trustworthy candidates.
