Mysterious Underwater Creature Caught On Camera Identified
In April of 2012, an underwater camera on an oil rig picked up on a strange creature 5,000 feet below the surface of the water in the Gulf of Mexico. Almost immediately, netizens started speculating what the blob-like organism is.

Well, the whispers continue about the seemingly odd thing, but marine life experts have concluded it’s a jellyfish. It’s classified as a deepstaria enigmatica. The species is incredibly rare. It was first described in 1967 by F.S. Russell who referred to it as a ‘very enigmatic deep-sea jellyfish’.
The blob captured by the oil rig device actually looks nothing like a jellyfish. This particular organism appears like a slimy sheet uncontrollably drifting through the water’s currents.

Despite the fact the mystery was solved years ago, the roughly 2-foot long jelly, slowly moving and rarely seen species is still a wonder to look it. Typically these types of jellies are found in Antartica.
