Pygmy hippos are rare animals that are found in either zoos or their natural habitats in West Africa’s forests. Recently, the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, UK welcomed a baby pygmy hippopotamus into the world.

Including the latest arrival, the male calf’s mother named Flora has given birth to three babies that are all part of the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme. The recent birth is particularly exciting because there is a shortage of boy pygmy hippos in the program.

The arrival is also special for zookeepers, who have watched as 28-year-old Flora battled cancer. Presently, there is still a tumor located in her mouth but according to employees, the treatment worked great on Flora and her pregnancy was not impacted.
