CHICAGO — One man was killed and at least 22 others were injured in shootings across Chicago over the Halloween weekend.
NBC Chicago reports that the fatal shooting involved a masked man who attempted to rob Envios de Dinero, a store and currency exchange in the Gage Park neighborhood of the city's southwest side around 7 p.m. on Saturday.
The gunman, identified as 55-year-old Reginald Gildersleeve, approached an employee at the counter and announced a robbery after showing his gun.
He pointed the weapon at another employee, and was forcing her to the back of the store when a customer with a concealed carry gun drew his weapon and fired multiple shots at Gildersleeve, killing him.
The 44-year-old customer, who was carrying license and identification for his firearm, has not been charged. Authorities are reviewing the case and are looking at the shooting as a self-defense issue.
Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi has said the issue of whether licensed gun carriers should intervene in dangerous situations is "a slippery slope."
Just last month, a Michigan woman with a concealed carry license opened fire on shoplifters fleeing from a Home Depot with more than $1,000 worth of equipment, flattening a tire of their SUV. Though no one was hurt in the incident, the woman may face up to 90 days in jail for reckless use of her firearm.
