Peru: Women March for Their Rights Despite Setbacks
Hundreds of women’s rights activists marched on Wednesday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The march came at a critical time after several lost battles, the most recent being Tuesday’s congressional rejection of a law that would have legalized abortion in cases of rape. Feminists believe that a major reason that Peru is not advancing in terms of women’s rights is the shrinking rate of women representatives in political office. Only around 20% of the members of Congress and 5% of mayors and local officials are women. Rael Mora reports from Lima for teleSUR
