CNBC Commentator Slams Trump's Carrier Deal: 'Absolutely Chilling'

During a CNBC interview, Jimmy Pethokoukis with the American Enterprise Institute suggested that Donald Trump's Carrier deal is "absolutely chilling."

On Thursday, Donald Trump announced in Indianapolis that about a thousand Carrier jobs would stay in the U.S. and not move to Mexico due to his team's efforts.
As part of his speech, the president-elect said, "Companies are not going to leave the United States anymore without consequences."
Jimmy Pethokoukis with the American Enterprise Institute raised an alarm over the Carrier deal, saying on CNBC, "The idea that American corporations are going to have to make business decisions, not based on the fact that we've created an ideal environment for economic growth in the United States, but out of fear of punitive actions based on who knows what criteria exactly from a presidential administration. I think that's absolutely chilling."
Paul Bonicelli, a former George W. Bush adviser, who also spoke to CNBC had a different view, suggesting there's a broader Trump economic plan and remarked, "At the end of the day, it is unleashing the economic potential of Americans that grows jobs and I think that's what this administration is going to do."
According to NPR, "Details about the deal dripped out Thursday morning. United Technologies Corp. (parent company to Carrier) will get $7 million in tax breaks over 10 years, the Wall Street Journal reports, but the Indiana Business Journal adds that the company was also scared of losing federal contracts."
Commenting on the implications for this level of intervention by the White House in private sector, Trump noted, "I think it’s very presidential. And if it’s not presidential, that’s okay - because I actually like doing it...we’re going to have a lot of phone calls made to companies when they say they are leaving this country, because they’re not going to leave this country.”
