00:00:19 - I did not read the book, I don't think.

00:01:19 - Let's just watch it.
00:01:20 - Okay, man, let's do it.
00:01:22 (intense music)
00:01:24 (dramatic music)
00:01:27 - Where are we going?
00:01:33 - Are we going down or up?
00:01:35 (monster growling)
00:01:36 Oh. - Ugh.
00:01:37 - Ugh, he is not feeling well.
00:01:42 - Is that Dylan O'Brien?
00:01:45 - Hey, that's a guy from "Love and Monsters."
00:01:50 (monster growling)
00:01:51 (gasps)
00:01:51 - Ooh, and there's a monster.
00:01:54 (monster growling)
00:01:57 - This is how every one of my days begins.
00:02:02 (laughs)
00:02:03 - Day one, greenie, rising shot.
00:02:05 - Will Poulter. - Oh, whoa.
00:02:08 - Hey, we got a runner!
00:02:14 - Oh.
00:02:15 - A maze runner, mayhaps.
00:02:18 - Still trying to figure out what the F is going on.
00:02:21 Oh, okay.
00:02:22 - It's their first day at an all-boys high school.
00:02:24 - He's stuck.
00:02:25 - Oh, okay.
00:02:29 Was that like their version of hazing?
00:02:31 That was their version of hazing.
00:02:33 They're like, "Throw him in that elevator
00:02:34 "with that bear." - We're gonna put you
00:02:35 in a spooky elevator. - Yeah.
00:02:37 - My name is Albie.
00:02:38 Like, you tell me anything about yourself,
00:02:39 who you are, where you came from.
00:02:42 - Albie the racist dragon.
00:02:45 (laughs)
00:02:46 - Why can't I remember it?
00:02:47 - It's okay, it happens to us all.
00:02:49 You get your name back in a day or two.
00:02:51 - What?
00:02:52 - It's a powerful anesthetic.
00:02:54 - We grow our own food, we build our own shelter.
00:02:57 Whatever we need, the box provides.
00:02:59 - The box. - The box provides.
00:03:02 - That big old box.
00:03:03 - They send 'em once a month
00:03:04 with fresh supplies and a new greenie.
00:03:06 - By who, though?
00:03:07 Who put us here?
00:03:08 - Yeah, that we don't know.
00:03:09 - Greenbean, meet him. - Oh, I love him.
00:03:11 - When I'm not around, he's in charge.
00:03:12 - This is Spinach.
00:03:13 - The boy from "Love Actually" is so grown up now.
00:03:17 - And I think he's on "Game of Thrones" too, to be fair.
00:03:19 - Oh, yeah.
00:03:20 - Jojen something.
00:03:21 - What's out there?
00:03:23 - Ever go beyond those walls?
00:03:25 Do you understand me, greenie?
00:03:26 - Yes, Carrots.
00:03:27 - What happens behind the walls?
00:03:29 - Everybody wants to know.
00:03:32 - Hey, Chuck, where you been, man?
00:03:34 - Aw.
00:03:35 - You're doing better than I did.
00:03:36 I cleaned my pants three times
00:03:38 before they got me out of bed.
00:03:40 - Excellent.
00:03:41 - Nice.
00:03:42 - These are those same pants.
00:03:43 (laughing)
00:03:45 - Haven't been washed.
00:03:46 - Where are you going?
00:03:47 - I just wanna see.
00:03:49 - You can look around all you want,
00:03:50 but you better not go out there.
00:03:51 - I just know what I'm told.
00:03:53 I'm not supposed to leave.
00:03:54 - Where's your sense of adventure, Chuck?
00:03:56 - He pooped his pants too many times.
00:03:57 He doesn't have adventures anymore.
00:04:00 - New greenie, huh?
00:04:03 How's it feel to be promoted?
00:04:05 - Hey, they were just for outside.
00:04:06 - They break breaking rules.
00:04:08 - They're different, they're runners.
00:04:10 They know more about the maze than anyone.
00:04:11 - What, you just said maze?
00:04:12 - I did?
00:04:15 - Aw. - Chuck.
00:04:16 - You're done messed up now, Chuck.
00:04:18 - Chuck doesn't have a vault.
00:04:19 - Why won't you tell me what's out there?
00:04:20 - I'm trying to protect you, man.
00:04:21 - But you're ungood.
00:04:22 - You guys can't just keep me here.
00:04:23 - We can't let you leave.
00:04:24 - Why not?
00:04:25 - He's doing the Chris Pratt hand.
00:04:26 (laughing)
00:04:28 - Stay where you are, Blue.
00:04:30 (thunder rumbling)
00:04:33 Oh, what?
00:04:34 (thunder rumbling)
00:04:37 Oh, awesome.
00:04:39 I would like to go out now.
00:04:41 - This is pretty intriguing so far, I gotta say.
00:04:43 - Yeah.
00:04:44 (thunder rumbling)
00:04:47 (thunder rumbling)
00:04:50 - Yes, it's a metaphor.
00:04:54 (laughing)
00:04:56 Crushed by circumstance.
00:04:59 - Welcome to the Glade.
00:05:00 - The Glade or the Blade?
00:05:03 I still don't know what they're saying.
00:05:05 - Yeah, they're interchangeable.
00:05:07 (laughing)
00:05:08 Sure there are plenty of blades in the Glade.
00:05:10 - All right, bonfires.
00:05:14 (thunder rumbling)
00:05:17 - Where'd you get that cow head or horse head
00:05:19 or whatever that is, the skull?
00:05:21 - We're trapped here, aren't we?
00:05:24 - For the moment.
00:05:25 Those are the Runners.
00:05:27 That guy in the middle there, that's Mina.
00:05:29 - The coolest one.
00:05:31 - They run the maze, memorizing it,
00:05:34 trying to find a way out.
00:05:36 - How long have they been looking?
00:05:38 - Three years.
00:05:39 - Oh my God, that's too long.
00:05:41 (thunder rumbling)
00:05:44 - What is that sound?
00:05:46 - It's the maze, changing.
00:05:49 - Oh.
00:05:50 This is some sick psycho ward.
00:05:54 They're all watching you.
00:05:56 - Yeah, you're all lab rats.
00:05:59 - The Runners are the only ones
00:06:00 that really know what's out there.
00:06:01 And it's a good thing too,
00:06:02 'cause if they don't make it back
00:06:03 before those doors close,
00:06:05 then they're stuck out there for the night.
00:06:06 - How many have you lost?
00:06:08 - No one's ever survived the night in the maze.
00:06:10 - Oh, but you will.
00:06:11 You got this Dylan O'Brien.
00:06:12 - Yeah, man.
00:06:14 You're the Greenie they never saw coming.
00:06:16 - What happens to them?
00:06:17 - We call them Grievers.
00:06:19 Of course, no one's ever seen one
00:06:22 and lived to tell about it.
00:06:23 - Grievers, good YA novel terminology.
00:06:26 - No, no one wants to be a Runner.
00:06:29 Besides, you don't get chosen.
00:06:31 - Get chosen by who?
00:06:32 - The jerk guy you don't like.
00:06:35 Now fight and show you're worthy.
00:06:38 - What do you say, Greenie?
00:06:39 Wanna see what you're made of?
00:06:40 - Yes.
00:06:41 - Greenie, Greenie.
00:06:43 - Greenie.
00:06:44 - Greenie, Greenie, Greenie.
00:06:47 - The rules are simple, Greenie.
00:06:49 I try to piss you out of the circle,
00:06:52 try to last more than five seconds.
00:06:54 Ready?
00:06:56 - Owie.
00:07:01 - He's not doing so hot.
00:07:04 - What do you want to be called?
00:07:05 Shank?
00:07:10 - You are too funny, man.
00:07:12 - I think I'm settled on Shank.
00:07:13 - Better than Radish, that's what I call him.
00:07:18 - Yeah, get him.
00:07:19 Nice.
00:07:24 - Now you've done it, you've upset the structure.
00:07:28 You've upset the hierarchy, man.
00:07:30 - Thomas.
00:07:32 - What?
00:07:33 - Oh, that's my name.
00:07:35 - I remember my name.
00:07:37 I'm Thomas.
00:07:39 - Thomas!
00:07:40 - Thomas!
00:07:42 - All right, Tommy boy.
00:07:46 - Oh, never seen that either.
00:07:47 Do you love how every single YA novel adaptation
00:07:51 does have like a sequence where they take a break
00:07:53 to dump all the new terminology on you?
00:07:55 - Yeah.
00:07:56 - These guys are called the this
00:07:57 and those are called the that.
00:07:58 - Yeah.
00:07:59 - We can't escape.
00:08:05 We can't bear.
00:08:08 - Dang.
00:08:08 - Oh, that's spooky.
00:08:19 - And the audience needs to know that.
00:08:31 - He was there for like five minutes.
00:08:37 - Oh.
00:08:38 - Oh.
00:08:38 - Oh no.
00:08:41 - Oh boy, okay.
00:08:43 - Poor George.
00:08:44 - Did anyone try climbing to the top?
00:08:46 - Yes.
00:08:47 - Anything you think of, we've already tried.
00:08:49 The only way out here is through the maze.
00:08:51 Now look, you wanna be helpful?
00:08:53 - Yes, obviously.
00:08:54 - Pick us up some more fertilizer.
00:08:58 - It's a late reflex on that catch.
00:08:59 - What do we got?
00:09:05 - Bones?
00:09:06 Oh.
00:09:07 - Grave.
00:09:08 Damn.
00:09:09 Damn.
00:09:13 - They did not bury that body very well.
00:09:15 - And George must not have died in the maze.
00:09:18 Oh, you're looking so good, buddy.
00:09:22 - Ben, right?
00:09:25 I don't know if we ever--
00:09:25 - What the, oh my God, what?
00:09:29 - Are you okay?
00:09:30 - What?
00:09:30 - Oh, damn.
00:09:33 - Oh, my God.
00:09:34 - Oh, my gosh.
00:09:37 - Jeez.
00:09:38 - Your fault, what?
00:09:44 - What?
00:09:45 - Straight, straight, ow.
00:09:48 - Yes, oh, nope.
00:09:50 - Whoa.
00:09:57 - Some heavy stunts in this movie.
00:09:59 Not gonna lie, this is kinda going hard.
00:10:01 - Yeah, definitely help.
00:10:02 - What the fudge?
00:10:05 Oh, my goodness.
00:10:06 - Wow.
00:10:06 - Oh.
00:10:09 - I'll kill you.
00:10:10 - Oh, my.
00:10:11 - Oh.
00:10:14 - What the hell happened?
00:10:16 - He just attacked me.
00:10:17 - You okay?
00:10:18 - I left his shirt.
00:10:19 - I didn't mean it.
00:10:20 - I left his shirt.
00:10:21 - It's up in his eyes.
00:10:22 - What, oh.
00:10:22 - Yeah, stung by a griever.
00:10:25 - In contact with a griever.
00:10:26 - He's been stung in the middle of the day.
00:10:29 - We gotta put him down.
00:10:31 - Put him in a pit.
00:10:32 - Come on, everybody help.
00:10:33 - No, no, no.
00:10:34 - Pretty sure he's gonna be able to break out of that pit.
00:10:42 - Wonder what it must have been like
00:10:43 to be some of the other people on the blade.
00:10:46 Just hanging out in the field all day shooting.
00:10:49 - He said he saw me.
00:10:50 He said this is all my fault.
00:10:53 How could this be my fault?
00:10:55 - Get some rest.
00:10:56 - What do you know?
00:10:57 - Oh.
00:11:00 - Just please listen to me.
00:11:02 Let us be out.
00:11:03 - Sheeps, man.
00:11:06 - Sorry, dude.
00:11:07 - That's hardcore.
00:11:08 - Oh. - Sheeps.
00:11:14 - Oh God, yeah.
00:11:15 They're just gonna like send him out.
00:11:18 - No, please, please don't.
00:11:21 Please don't do it.
00:11:23 - Aw.
00:11:24 - You're gonna become one of them, buddy.
00:11:26 You gotta go.
00:11:27 Oh, they're gonna have to push him with those T-sticks.
00:11:30 - Yeah.
00:11:31 - Oh, yep, here we go.
00:11:36 - Ah.
00:11:37 Jeez, man.
00:11:42 - Awkward.
00:11:43 Just run, buddy.
00:11:47 Just go.
00:11:48 Just accept your fate.
00:11:49 Get out of there.
00:11:51 You don't wanna be squished to death.
00:11:52 - Yeah, you're gonna get smushed.
00:11:53 - Come on, run.
00:11:55 - Oh, gnarly. - What are you doing?
00:11:57 Oh my God.
00:11:59 (man crying)
00:12:01 - Oh, okay, so he accepted smushing as his fate, or?
00:12:11 - Well, he just didn't wanna get smushed.
00:12:12 He's gonna take his chances with the maze.
00:12:14 - He's right there, okay.
00:12:16 - He doesn't wanna get saw-fived right now.
00:12:18 - You think he might make it?
00:12:20 - He dead.
00:12:21 - No one survives a night in the maze.
00:12:24 - You don't know that, man.
00:12:25 - Yeah, you haven't been out there, Chuck.
00:12:27 - Oh, here we go.
00:12:29 Another dreamy or a memory?
00:12:32 Oh, a memory.
00:12:33 - A lady. - Is that?
00:12:34 - Wicked is good.
00:12:35 - Many ladies.
00:12:37 - Don't make it easy on them.
00:12:39 Everything's going to change.
00:12:41 - Oh, for a second, I thought that was Kirsten Stewart.
00:12:43 It's not.
00:12:43 - I thought it was the one from "Get Out" too,
00:12:47 and Megan, or Kate Mara.
00:12:48 She looks like a bunch of people.
00:12:51 - You have to choose.
00:12:52 - What do they put in your jeans, man?
00:12:56 Give you some kind of griever, repellent juju?
00:12:59 I volunteer as tribute.
00:13:06 - Why would Albie go in the maze?
00:13:10 - Albie went to retrace Ben's footsteps before sundown.
00:13:12 - So he's gonna go back to where Ben was just--
00:13:14 - Albie knows what he's doing.
00:13:16 Knows better than any of us.
00:13:17 - 'Til he doesn't come back tonight.
00:13:19 - Every month, the box sends up a new arrival.
00:13:21 Someone had to be first, right?
00:13:24 - Is Albie first?
00:13:26 - Mine was Albie.
00:13:27 - Oh.
00:13:28 - So A begins with A.
00:13:29 - Yep.
00:13:29 - This is the future the feminists want.
00:13:31 All the men in one compound can't leave.
00:13:35 Monsters outside.
00:13:38 - They should be back by now.
00:13:40 What happens if they don't make it?
00:13:42 They're gonna make it.
00:13:43 - This is what they do.
00:13:44 It's part of the show.
00:13:45 - Right at the last minute.
00:13:47 Or they won't, and you guys will be worried all night.
00:13:50 Are they dead or not?
00:13:51 - Guys, can't we send someone after them?
00:13:52 - That's against the rules.
00:13:54 Can't risk losing anyone else.
00:13:56 - Whoa.
00:13:59 I mean, you're kind of risking losing all of you
00:14:02 by standing at the mouth, but.
00:14:04 - Yeah.
00:14:05 They're gonna come around at the last second.
00:14:10 Here we go. - Come on.
00:14:12 - Somebody's injured.
00:14:13 - Oh no.
00:14:14 - Okay, hurry it up. - Albie.
00:14:16 (dramatic music)
00:14:19 - Oh God, this is a close call.
00:14:22 - No.
00:14:22 - Oh, leave him.
00:14:24 - They're not gonna make it.
00:14:26 - Go in, Dylan O'Brien.
00:14:28 - I think you have to leave him.
00:14:30 - It's all up to you, man. - He's gonna help him.
00:14:35 - It's all up to you.
00:14:35 - That greenie's gonna do it.
00:14:37 (screaming)
00:14:40 - Yeah.
00:14:41 - I'm so scared.
00:14:44 Oh my God, there's no way.
00:14:46 How are you gonna?
00:14:47 Oh, it closed.
00:14:48 - Oh, dang.
00:14:49 - Oh, snap.
00:14:52 - Oh my goodness, what are they gonna do?
00:14:56 - What happened to him?
00:14:57 What does it look like?
00:14:58 - I can't tell. - He's stunk.
00:15:01 - Oh, okay, he's a griever now.
00:15:03 - All right, help me get him up.
00:15:06 - We gotta go.
00:15:07 The maze is already changing.
00:15:09 - We can't just leave him here.
00:15:10 - The old rules don't apply, Green Bean.
00:15:12 - I mean, he's dead, so take his vest pack and get going.
00:15:17 - We gotta go.
00:15:18 - Wait, wait, wait, wait, what are you talking about?
00:15:19 We gotta do something, we gotta hide.
00:15:21 - Where, I don't know.
00:15:22 - People just think, you're telling me
00:15:23 that there's not a single place we can take him?
00:15:26 - Take a look around, there's nowhere to go.
00:15:28 - Well, I feel like there's a lot of hallways
00:15:32 in a maze around you.
00:15:34 - You could just try something.
00:15:36 - Cover him up with the vines, or what are we thinking?
00:15:43 - Or climb.
00:15:44 - Oh, okay.
00:15:50 - I still think it was a really bad choice
00:15:52 not taking his vest off him and using his weapons.
00:15:55 - Yeah, a little bit.
00:15:57 - But if he wakes up, he'll need to defend himself,
00:15:59 whilst mortally wounded.
00:16:01 - What are you doing?
00:16:02 - Just a little more and we'll tie it off.
00:16:07 - Ooh.
00:16:11 - What the, all right, buddy, leave him in a lurch.
00:16:18 - Yeah, he knows the maze.
00:16:20 - Yeah.
00:16:21 - He ain't got time for this green bean bullshit.
00:16:24 - Oh, is he just gonna like,
00:16:25 all right, camouflage up in there?
00:16:27 Oh, what is this thing?
00:16:31 - Is it organic or mechanical?
00:16:34 - Yeah, it looks metal to me.
00:16:36 - Heavy metal.
00:16:37 - I mean, the soundscape alone in here is quite jarring.
00:16:48 - Yeah.
00:16:49 - Very freaked out in here.
00:16:51 - Oh, no.
00:16:58 - Spooky.
00:16:59 Is it like a spider?
00:17:02 - Yeah, it looks like a robo spider.
00:17:04 - Oh, no.
00:17:05 - Damn.
00:17:07 - Oh, no, oh my God.
00:17:09 - Gross.
00:17:13 - That looks like a Harry Potter spider.
00:17:15 - Yeah.
00:17:16 (dramatic music)
00:17:19 - Nice swooping camera movements.
00:17:26 - Oh, shit.
00:17:29 - Wowee.
00:17:32 - Oh my God.
00:17:37 - Come on, boy.
00:17:39 - Oh, whoa.
00:17:42 Whoa, nice jump.
00:17:45 (dramatic music)
00:17:47 - How does this work?
00:17:52 - Leap of faith.
00:17:58 - Oh, no.
00:18:04 - Damn.
00:18:14 - Did the same people like engineer these creatures?
00:18:18 - Oh, nice.
00:18:23 - You could be the first two to make it back.
00:18:31 - Nope, he doesn't like that.
00:18:41 Trust your instincts.
00:18:43 (dramatic music)
00:18:45 - Oh, yeah, what if he, like, I was thinking that.
00:18:47 Like, what if he just stays in there
00:18:49 and then crushes the spider, but he gets out right on time?
00:18:52 - Yeah.
00:18:53 - Yeah, smart.
00:18:56 That's what, oh, God.
00:18:58 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:19:05 Oh, oh, oh, oh, good, good, good, good.
00:19:08 - Come on, buddy.
00:19:08 You got this.
00:19:11 - Oh.
00:19:12 - (laughs)
00:19:19 - This is just like yesterday.
00:19:21 - Whoa.
00:19:27 - My man.
00:19:27 - Oh, greeny.
00:19:29 - King Greenbeard.
00:19:30 - Yeah.
00:19:31 - You call it coexisting?
00:19:40 - What?
00:19:41 You don't even know if you're gonna get backlash
00:19:44 for the spider dying yet, buddy.
00:19:46 - Yes.
00:19:55 - Both.
00:19:57 - Yeah.
00:20:04 Now we're talking.
00:20:05 - The subtle version of one of my favorite tropes.
00:20:08 - We need more like that around here.
00:20:10 You're hired.
00:20:12 - But if there is one thing that I know about the maze,
00:20:14 it is that you do not.
00:20:16 - It's moving at a different time, right?
00:20:21 Everything's changing, man.
00:20:23 - Uh-oh.
00:20:30 - Just jump right in.
00:20:33 - What?
00:20:36 - Oh.
00:20:37 - Oh no, oh God, no.
00:20:39 - This is not good.
00:20:41 Is that his mom or something?
00:20:42 That's the girl who was in the thing with him.
00:20:45 In his memory.
00:20:46 - Oh.
00:20:53 - Whoa.
00:20:56 - Okay.
00:20:57 - Last greeny?
00:20:58 - The last one ever to, oh yeah, she knows who he is.
00:21:02 - My name is also Thomas.
00:21:04 - You're gonna go out and dissect that thing
00:21:05 all by yourself?
00:21:06 - I will if I have to.
00:21:07 - Have the other runners left yet?
00:21:09 - The other runners quit this morning.
00:21:11 - Also ask about where's your vest?
00:21:14 - Yeah, I'm supposed to get a vest.
00:21:16 - I think it's time we find out what we're really up against.
00:21:18 - You're not going back out there alone.
00:21:21 Meet me in the woods in half an hour.
00:21:23 - All right, man, and bring my vest.
00:21:25 - Yeah.
00:21:26 - This be enough?
00:21:30 - Okay.
00:21:31 - All right, you got a squad now.
00:21:33 - Stepping up.
00:21:34 - Cool.
00:21:39 - Oh, awesome.
00:21:41 - What?
00:21:45 Oh, okay.
00:21:46 - Oh.
00:21:49 - Oh.
00:21:50 - Yeah, there's something in there.
00:21:52 You mean the size of a pancake?
00:21:54 - Oh yeah, take the computer out.
00:21:58 A camera.
00:21:59 That red blinky light.
00:22:00 - Is it still recording?
00:22:02 - All right, ready?
00:22:03 On three.
00:22:04 One, two, three.
00:22:05 - Yeah, that thing's coming off.
00:22:11 - Okay.
00:22:12 - What the hell is that?
00:22:21 - WCKD.
00:22:25 Same as on the crate in the elevator.
00:22:28 - Oh.
00:22:29 - These are the same letters we get in our supplies.
00:22:31 - Who knows where this might lead us?
00:22:33 - You see what he's trying to do, right?
00:22:34 - We should punish him.
00:22:35 - Oh my God, this fricking guy.
00:22:37 Put this guy in the pit.
00:22:38 - The rules are the only thing
00:22:40 that have ever held us together.
00:22:41 Why now are we questioning that?
00:22:42 - And kept you in this big box too.
00:22:45 - Starting from tomorrow, you're a runner.
00:22:47 - I mean, it seems like the logical conclusion.
00:22:50 - He's the first one to kill a graver
00:22:52 and he came back with clues.
00:22:53 Like, why are you so mad, bro?
00:22:55 - Yeah.
00:22:56 - Like, just go cook dinner and chill.
00:22:58 - It's unprecedented circumstances, man.
00:23:00 Come on.
00:23:01 - Like.
00:23:02 - At least a little flexibility from you.
00:23:04 - Yeah.
00:23:05 - This is a modicum.
00:23:07 Meet me at eighth of the way.
00:23:09 - Not at all.
00:23:10 He must be punished.
00:23:12 - Please tell me there's like an initiation
00:23:18 ayahuasca ceremony or something.
00:23:19 - Oh my gosh, I think you're right.
00:23:21 What is this thing?
00:23:22 Oh, that's what they've carved,
00:23:27 all the sequences of the maze.
00:23:30 And then maybe the letters and the numbers
00:23:32 is the sequence of the maze and how to get out.
00:23:35 I think, maybe, or not, I don't know.
00:23:40 - No, you're right.
00:23:41 - What do you mean all of it?
00:23:42 I thought you were still mapping it.
00:23:43 - There's nothing left to map.
00:23:45 - Huh.
00:23:46 - Oh.
00:23:47 - Why haven't you told anyone this?
00:23:49 - It was Albie's call.
00:23:50 People needed to believe we had a chance of getting out.
00:23:53 But maybe now.
00:23:54 - We do?
00:23:55 - We have a real chance.
00:23:56 Printed on the walls, sections one through eight.
00:23:59 When the maze changes, it opens up a new section.
00:24:02 The pattern always stays the same.
00:24:04 - That one's from seven.
00:24:07 - What's so special about seven?
00:24:09 - Last night when you killed that griever,
00:24:12 section seven was open.
00:24:13 Tomorrow you and I are gonna take a closer look.
00:24:16 - Yeah, with Seth Meyers.
00:24:18 - Girls are awesome.
00:24:19 - Girls are awesome.
00:24:22 - It's true.
00:24:24 - Throw one more of those things.
00:24:25 - Go away.
00:24:26 - I don't think she likes us very much.
00:24:28 - What do you want from me?
00:24:29 - Look, we just wanna talk.
00:24:31 - Whoa, whoa, hey, hey.
00:24:32 - Look at the hell of rocks up there.
00:24:33 - Yeah, like where's she getting all those rocks?
00:24:35 - Okay, I'm gonna come up, okay?
00:24:37 - Just me.
00:24:41 - He's gonna explode.
00:24:42 - Yeah, stay back, buddy.
00:24:45 - There's nothing this green bean can't do.
00:24:47 - Where am I?
00:24:49 - This is all normal, okay?
00:24:50 We've all been through this.
00:24:52 And your name, that'll come back to you in a couple days.
00:24:53 It's like the one thing that's--
00:24:55 - Theresa.
00:24:55 - Yeah, just like she remembered you.
00:24:58 She got it quick.
00:24:59 - Girls mature faster.
00:25:00 - Are you sure you don't remember anything else?
00:25:03 - I remember water, feeling like I was drowning.
00:25:06 These faces staring at me.
00:25:07 - You remember that too, Thomas?
00:25:09 - Woman's voice saying the same thing over and over.
00:25:12 - Wicked is good.
00:25:13 - Wicked. - Wicked is good.
00:25:15 - She's from Boston,
00:25:16 she's just trying to explain the slang.
00:25:19 Wicked is good.
00:25:20 - You were there.
00:25:21 - There we go.
00:25:23 - These were in my pocket when I came up.
00:25:25 - It's the T-virus.
00:25:28 - Wicked is good.
00:25:30 - Maybe it's an antidote for when you get stung.
00:25:33 - We don't even know what this stuff is.
00:25:35 We don't know who sent it, why it came up here with you.
00:25:37 I mean, for all we know, this thing could kill you.
00:25:40 - Well, I mean.
00:25:41 - Look at him.
00:25:42 How could this possibly make it any worse?
00:25:44 - Don't accidentally prick yourself.
00:25:47 - Oh boy. - Oh my God.
00:25:50 You better stab him quick.
00:25:51 (man screaming)
00:25:54 - Oh my God, hurry up.
00:25:58 - Jesus.
00:26:00 - Goodness gracious.
00:26:01 - There you go.
00:26:03 - Wait, what do you got there?
00:26:05 - Oh, that came out pretty damn good.
00:26:07 - Oh.
00:26:08 - That's what he's been carving the whole time.
00:26:10 - It's for my parents.
00:26:11 - You remember your parents?
00:26:13 - Mommy and Hanna must have them.
00:26:14 - It could be a test tube baby.
00:26:16 - Chuck, why would you give this to me?
00:26:17 - I can't remember them anyway.
00:26:19 - You're my best friend.
00:26:20 - Maybe if you find a way, you can give it to them for me.
00:26:23 - This kid's a good actor.
00:26:24 - Yeah. - I like Chuck a lot.
00:26:25 - I mean, me too.
00:26:27 - I want you to give that to them yourself.
00:26:29 - When we get out of here.
00:26:30 - We're gonna get out of here.
00:26:32 All of us.
00:26:33 Promise.
00:26:35 - Oh, buddy.
00:26:37 - Big day, Greeny.
00:26:38 Sure you don't wanna sit this one out?
00:26:39 - Get me out of here.
00:26:40 - He got a vest.
00:26:45 - The vest.
00:26:46 - Where did the vest come from?
00:26:47 How is it not a big event?
00:26:49 How do we not have a vest event?
00:26:51 - There's a whole deleted scene
00:26:52 where they build the vest. - My God.
00:26:54 - They pour some kind of molten leather
00:26:57 into a big old mold.
00:27:00 - I am upset.
00:27:01 That would have been maybe one of the best scenes.
00:27:03 - I know.
00:27:04 It's okay.
00:27:05 Maybe it'll be a flashback in part two.
00:27:07 Four, section four.
00:27:14 - All right, this is looking cool.
00:27:16 - Section five. - Five.
00:27:17 - We know numbers.
00:27:19 - We need to get to seven. - Six.
00:27:22 (dramatic music)
00:27:24 - All right.
00:27:27 - Z1.
00:27:28 - Someone's updated the algorithm.
00:27:35 - What?
00:27:37 Oh, it's like activating.
00:27:44 - Geiger counter almost.
00:27:50 - It's way back home to charge.
00:27:52 It must return to the charging dock.
00:27:55 Okay.
00:27:58 A WC whatever, it was up there.
00:28:02 - It's a loading hanger or something it said.
00:28:05 - Just another dead end.
00:28:06 - How about that?
00:28:09 - Oh my God, is the hanger gonna move now?
00:28:12 - Whoa.
00:28:13 - Cool.
00:28:13 - So do you have to kill all the Grievers
00:28:16 and collect all eight?
00:28:19 (dramatic music)
00:28:21 - Dang.
00:28:22 - Okay.
00:28:28 - Who's going in the hole?
00:28:29 - Grievers.
00:28:33 - What the fudge?
00:28:37 - Oh, it's scanning, it's gonna be like,
00:28:38 no, but maybe because they have that thing.
00:28:40 (dramatic music)
00:28:43 - Whoa.
00:28:44 (dramatic music)
00:28:47 - Give me the whip, I'll throw you the item.
00:28:50 - Okay.
00:28:51 Oh, okay.
00:28:56 Seven is now closing.
00:28:58 (dramatic music)
00:29:01 - Yeesh.
00:29:06 (dramatic music)
00:29:08 - No.
00:29:13 - Uh-oh.
00:29:16 - Oh no.
00:29:17 - Whoa, nice job.
00:29:20 (dramatic music)
00:29:22 - Whoa.
00:29:26 - What the, get out of there.
00:29:30 - Yes, good, okay.
00:29:31 (dramatic music)
00:29:34 - Wait, this is like breaking up concrete,
00:29:37 which like this doesn't happen all the time.
00:29:40 - No, they're gonna have to completely redraw their map now.
00:29:46 - Whoa.
00:29:46 - Oh my God. - No.
00:29:50 - Not in there, isn't that, no.
00:29:52 This is terrible. - What a nightmare.
00:29:54 - Oh.
00:29:55 - No, thank you.
00:29:58 Okay, are we done yet?
00:30:00 - What?
00:30:07 - Who are they?
00:30:08 Expound. - What, yeah.
00:30:10 - Come on, man.
00:30:10 - Oh no. - Oh, now they want y'all
00:30:14 to go out there.
00:30:16 - They're trying to shake stuff up.
00:30:18 Oh, or that means all the Grievers can get in now.
00:30:21 - Yeah. - If they come out at night.
00:30:24 - The Grievers come out at night.
00:30:26 - Oh.
00:30:27 - The Grievers come out at night.
00:30:28 (dramatic music)
00:30:30 - Oh.
00:30:31 - Oh, snap.
00:30:33 - Okay.
00:30:35 - New entrance.
00:30:36 - Multiple.
00:30:38 - Huh, huh.
00:30:43 - All right, now y'all are sitting ducks.
00:30:45 If they can come from every sector,
00:30:47 you gotta fight 'em off.
00:30:48 What?
00:30:55 Oh my God, y'all better hurry.
00:30:56 Come on now.
00:30:57 - Theresa can stop them.
00:31:03 - Oh, man.
00:31:05 Oh!
00:31:11 Oh, see you later, buddy.
00:31:16 (dramatic music)
00:31:18 - Oh yeah, slack yourself in the old cage.
00:31:23 - Creepers.
00:31:24 - Oh.
00:31:29 - Oh my goodness.
00:31:36 I would start lighting stuff on fire and see if that works.
00:31:42 - Burn the place to the ground.
00:31:43 - Yeah.
00:31:45 - Whoa.
00:31:46 - Holy tamale.
00:31:48 Oh my God, you gotta throw a fire stick in its mouth.
00:31:52 Yes, yes!
00:31:54 - Yeah, molotov it.
00:31:56 - That's right, Theresa.
00:31:57 You got great ideas, me and you, girl.
00:31:59 - Girls get it done.
00:32:00 - That's what I'm talking about, light some stuff on fire.
00:32:03 (laughing)
00:32:04 - Help me!
00:32:05 Get behind me.
00:32:06 - Get behind me.
00:32:08 Oh my gosh, it's like also a scorpion.
00:32:13 - You should see, yeah, it's like a vinegaroon.
00:32:17 - Oh, good job, they stuck it with stuff.
00:32:19 What the?
00:32:25 - Oh, dang.
00:32:29 - I mean, it was bound to happen.
00:32:33 Oh no, not Chuck, not Chuck, not Chuck.
00:32:37 - Anyone but Chuck.
00:32:37 - You better get him back.
00:32:39 Somebody stab that piece of metal with something else.
00:32:43 Come on, y'all.
00:32:45 Yeah, yeah, get it, Abby, what's he gonna do?
00:32:49 Yeah, pull that cord.
00:32:50 - Come on, bro.
00:32:51 - Yes, yes.
00:32:52 - Come on.
00:32:53 - Yes.
00:32:54 - Yes.
00:32:56 - Kill that hunk of metal.
00:32:57 - Yeah, I feel the rage.
00:33:03 - Thanks, Abby.
00:33:04 - What?
00:33:07 - Whoa, no, no!
00:33:09 - You just saved him.
00:33:11 - Oh my goodness.
00:33:12 - Gally.
00:33:15 - Oh my God, this fricking guy.
00:33:17 - Yep.
00:33:18 - What happened before you got here?
00:33:27 - Stab yourself with it.
00:33:31 - What are you gonna do to remember?
00:33:35 What?
00:33:37 - What is it?
00:33:38 - Oh, Thomas.
00:33:39 - Hey.
00:33:40 - Oh, that's gotta bring up some weird feelings.
00:33:43 - Oh boy.
00:33:44 - Who put us here?
00:33:48 - We don't know.
00:33:50 - Are they all actually there or is it a simulation?
00:33:56 - Why are we doing this?
00:33:57 - Excellent, Thomas.
00:34:00 - Oh.
00:34:01 - Is that Patricia Arquette?
00:34:03 - Wicked is good.
00:34:04 - How could this be life?
00:34:07 - I saw you.
00:34:08 I saw you.
00:34:10 I can't keep watching the guy.
00:34:14 - Did he program this whole thing?
00:34:16 - Gally's taking control.
00:34:17 He said we had a choice.
00:34:18 Either join him or get vanished to sundown with you.
00:34:21 - Excellent.
00:34:22 - It's not a prison, it's a test.
00:34:24 It all started when we were kids.
00:34:26 They'd give us these challenges.
00:34:28 They were experimenting on us.
00:34:29 The people who put you here, I worked with them.
00:34:33 The entire time you've been here,
00:34:35 I was on the other side of it.
00:34:36 - That is so grim.
00:34:38 - Why would they send us up if we were with them?
00:34:40 - It doesn't matter.
00:34:41 - The people we were before the maze,
00:34:42 they don't even exist anymore.
00:34:44 These creators took care of that.
00:34:46 - And you must have done something
00:34:47 to make them put you in here.
00:34:48 - You went into the maze and you found a way out.
00:34:51 - Yeah, but if I hanged, Albie would still be alive.
00:34:53 - Sacrificed.
00:34:54 - Shit happens, man.
00:34:56 - But I know that if he were here,
00:34:57 he would be telling you the exact same thing.
00:34:59 Pick your ass up and finish what you started.
00:35:02 - Oh, Albie's here in spirit.
00:35:04 - What if Thomas is right?
00:35:05 - Maybe he can lead us home.
00:35:06 - We are home.
00:35:08 - I'd love it here.
00:35:08 - You really think banishing us is going to solve anything?
00:35:11 - This isn't a banishing, it's an offering.
00:35:13 - What?
00:35:14 What are you?
00:35:15 - Oh my God.
00:35:18 - Look at our glade.
00:35:19 This is the only way.
00:35:23 And when the Grievers get what they came here for.
00:35:27 - Oh, we killed Gally now.
00:35:29 - Looking like Samwise Gamgee over there.
00:35:32 - Do you hear me?
00:35:33 I said tie him up.
00:35:34 - Game.
00:35:36 All right guys, step up.
00:35:37 - Yeah.
00:35:38 - Yeah, there we go.
00:35:39 Good, good, good.
00:35:40 - Nut punch.
00:35:41 - Good, yeah.
00:35:41 - Nut kick.
00:35:42 - Get him.
00:35:43 Sorry, buddy.
00:35:44 - Get over here, Samwise.
00:35:48 - Come on, Chuck.
00:35:49 - You don't have to come with us, but we are leaving.
00:35:51 - Anyone else who wants to come, that's your last chance.
00:35:53 - Just trying to scare you.
00:35:54 - No, I'm not trying to scare you.
00:35:55 You're already scared.
00:35:56 - All right, I'm scared.
00:35:58 - You have to be crazy not to be scared.
00:36:00 - Just come with us.
00:36:01 Good luck against the Grievers.
00:36:03 - Yeesh.
00:36:04 - All right, you made your choice.
00:36:06 - Take this, Chuck.
00:36:07 Stay behind us.
00:36:09 We get out now or we die trying.
00:36:12 - Get rich or die trying.
00:36:13 - All right.
00:36:14 (screaming)
00:36:17 - For Green Bean.
00:36:19 - Ooh, it's so spooky and scary.
00:36:23 How do you fight it?
00:36:25 - Yes.
00:36:27 - Nice job, guys.
00:36:29 Whoa.
00:36:31 Oh my God.
00:36:32 Somebody stab it in the eye.
00:36:34 Stab it in the mouth.
00:36:35 - Yeah.
00:36:36 - Yeah, get its mouth.
00:36:37 - Come out.
00:36:38 - Oh no, no, no, no.
00:36:42 - Stab its soft under bits.
00:36:44 No, Chuck.
00:36:50 Chuck.
00:36:52 - Oh my God.
00:36:53 - Chuck.
00:36:54 - Oh my God, get it.
00:36:54 Please get it.
00:36:55 (whimpering)
00:36:56 - Whoa.
00:36:57 - Oh no.
00:36:59 - Oh geez.
00:37:00 - Oh no.
00:37:03 - Come on. - Nice.
00:37:05 - In the pit.
00:37:07 - Yes.
00:37:08 Oh no.
00:37:10 Oh no.
00:37:12 This is too much.
00:37:14 - Whoa.
00:37:22 Whoa.
00:37:24 - Oh no.
00:37:25 - Geez.
00:37:26 (screaming)
00:37:28 - Oh no.
00:37:29 - Yes it will.
00:37:32 Yes it will.
00:37:33 - What?
00:37:34 - Ha ha ha ha ha, smart.
00:37:40 - Oh my God.
00:37:51 - No, no, no.
00:37:54 - Yell that last number out.
00:37:59 - Yes.
00:38:00 Nice stab.
00:38:02 (screaming)
00:38:04 - What?
00:38:07 Oh no.
00:38:09 - Oh, poor guy.
00:38:10 - Oh.
00:38:11 - Complete.
00:38:17 - Oh my goodness.
00:38:18 Oh, bye bye scary spooky spider.
00:38:23 - Wow.
00:38:24 - Oh, wow.
00:38:25 Yeah, there goes one in the mouth.
00:38:28 - Oh, whoa.
00:38:30 - Whoa.
00:38:30 - Kiwi.
00:38:32 - Oh.
00:38:33 - Well now we're just underground walking through like
00:38:38 to a concert.
00:38:39 I feel like that's what it looks like.
00:38:41 - Yeah.
00:38:42 Yeah, they'll be out in SoFi Stadium in just a second
00:38:46 for the Erez tour.
00:38:47 - We remember those lights from his dream.
00:38:50 - We do.
00:38:50 - Seriously?
00:38:54 - Yup.
00:38:55 - Very clearly the exit.
00:38:56 Love that.
00:39:01 - Oh no.
00:39:02 - But the Grievers didn't get inside, right?
00:39:07 What if it was Thomas and Teresa killed them all
00:39:14 and then put themselves in the maze?
00:39:16 - Yeah, maybe.
00:39:17 I gotta imagine Thomas was like,
00:39:20 "This is wrong, we shouldn't do this."
00:39:21 And then they put him in or something.
00:39:24 - My name is Dr. Ava Page.
00:39:26 I'm director of operations
00:39:27 at the World Catastrophe Kill Zone Department.
00:39:30 - What?
00:39:31 - If you're watching this,
00:39:31 that means you've successfully completed the maze trials.
00:39:35 I wish I could be there in person to congratulate you.
00:39:38 - Oh my.
00:39:39 - It was all done for a reason,
00:39:40 but the sun has scorched our world.
00:39:43 - Whoa.
00:39:45 - Billions of lives lost to fire, famine,
00:39:49 suffering on a global scale.
00:39:51 - Full-borming, this movie's woke.
00:39:53 - What came after was worse.
00:39:56 We called it the flare.
00:39:57 - Oh no.
00:39:58 - A deadly virus that attacks the brain.
00:40:01 - Ooh.
00:40:01 - It is violent, unpredictable.
00:40:04 - Oh.
00:40:05 - In time, a new generation emerged
00:40:08 that could survive the virus.
00:40:10 Suddenly, there was a reason to hope for a cure.
00:40:13 - Oh, they're all those.
00:40:15 - The young would have to be tested,
00:40:17 all in an effort to understand what makes them different.
00:40:21 (chuckles)
00:40:22 You may not realize it, but you're very important.
00:40:25 - You're all the special.
00:40:26 - Unfortunately, your trials have only just begun,
00:40:29 as you'll no doubt soon discover.
00:40:31 Not everyone agrees with our methods.
00:40:33 It may be too late for us.
00:40:37 - Oh God.
00:40:40 - Remember.
00:40:41 - She's getting shot right on camera.
00:40:43 - Wicked is good.
00:40:47 - Oh.
00:40:47 (gunshot)
00:40:48 - Cold.
00:40:49 - That was 45 minutes ago.
00:40:52 (laughs)
00:40:54 - What are we supposed to do now?
00:40:59 - Get out?
00:41:00 - Go outside?
00:41:01 - Oh God, they gotta walk in the scorched earth.
00:41:05 - Let's get out of here.
00:41:06 - Okay.
00:41:06 - No.
00:41:10 - Oh, there he goes, there he is.
00:41:13 - Gally?
00:41:14 - Don't, it's been stung.
00:41:15 - We can't leave.
00:41:18 - No, there's no escape from this place.
00:41:20 - Has he been out there?
00:41:21 Has he seen the world as it is?
00:41:23 - I belong to the maze.
00:41:24 - You should put down the gun.
00:41:26 - Let's check thinking.
00:41:28 - We all do.
00:41:29 - Oh.
00:41:30 (screams)
00:41:30 - Oh no.
00:41:31 - Damn.
00:41:33 - That was a good fake out.
00:41:35 - Thomas.
00:41:38 - Oh damn it.
00:41:40 - Oh, he dig him.
00:41:41 - No.
00:41:41 - Oh, Chuck.
00:41:44 - No.
00:41:44 - Yeah.
00:41:47 - Take his little carvin.
00:41:48 - Chuck, you're gonna get to them yourself.
00:41:49 Remember I told you that.
00:41:51 - You're gonna die an old woman warm in your bed.
00:41:53 (laughs)
00:41:58 - I mean, where did Chuck go?
00:41:59 I've never seen him before.
00:42:01 He's good.
00:42:02 - Whoa.
00:42:05 - The outside world.
00:42:07 - Who are these people coming in?
00:42:10 - Legit bad about that.
00:42:14 - Whoa.
00:42:17 - Okay.
00:42:18 - Into the sand.
00:42:20 - On the outside of the building,
00:42:22 I feel like it said wicked.
00:42:24 Did it?
00:42:24 - You guys all right?
00:42:28 - Don't worry.
00:42:29 You're safe now.
00:42:30 - What is going on?
00:42:33 - Was that their acronym WCKD?
00:42:36 - Yes.
00:42:37 - Wicked.
00:42:38 Are they saying that their organization is good?
00:42:40 - Is good.
00:42:40 (dramatic music)
00:42:43 - Wicked, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, okay.
00:42:49 Oh my God.
00:42:51 - That say wicked shelter.
00:42:52 - Oh, well, oh my God.
00:42:57 - I think it's safe to say the maze trials
00:42:58 were a complete success.
00:43:00 Thomas continues to surprise and impress.
00:43:04 - Love that guy.
00:43:05 - So let's move forward.
00:43:06 It's time now to begin phase two.
00:43:09 - What?
00:43:11 - What is that?
00:43:11 - What does that mean?
00:43:13 - What is the sequel called?
00:43:14 (dramatic music)
00:43:17 - What?
00:43:19 - Grim world.
00:43:20 - Were all those scientists faking dead?
00:43:22 'Cause that means they had to fake dead for a long time.
00:43:25 - They all had to rig each other up with squibs.
00:43:27 - Yeah, and like fake blood.
00:43:28 - Get a bunch of blank firing guns.
00:43:30 - What in the tamale?
00:43:31 - Wreck their own lab.
00:43:33 - Exactly.
00:43:34 Break everything up.
00:43:36 Okay, well, this has just left me
00:43:40 with a lot of questions, more questions.
00:43:45 - What do you mean?
00:43:46 - Yeah, I mean.
00:43:47 - It's all wrapped up here, Tara.
00:43:49 - It's not.
00:43:50 - James Dashner only wrote one novel.
00:43:52 I assume, I know that's not true.
00:43:55 - I'm gonna say I did not read this book, okay?
00:44:00 I had no idea what was going on.
00:44:02 I thought at first maybe I did, I did not.
00:44:05 This was intense.
00:44:10 I really liked it.
00:44:12 Gally was a real pain in the ass, which yeah, I get it.
00:44:17 He was our like, he was playing the role,
00:44:20 but I still have a lot of questions that went unanswered.
00:44:25 But I do think it's cool at the end that you're like,
00:44:28 oh, see, I was like, I was, so they are kind of like clones,
00:44:33 but not clones, they're experiments.
00:44:35 And they're the only ones who can survive the virus,
00:44:37 I guess, I don't know.
00:44:39 - Patricia Clarkson, that's her name, not Patricia Arquette.
00:44:43 Might be, I got half of it right.
00:44:46 - He messed up, he messed up.
00:44:48 - Okay, give us the juice, John, what'd you think?
00:44:51 - I enjoyed it overall.
00:44:52 I mean, yeah, it's definitely one of those movies
00:44:54 that clearly is setting up for much more lore
00:44:59 and many more twists and turns to come.
00:45:03 So like, yeah, it ends fully on a note of like,
00:45:06 oh, we've just scraped the iceberg.
00:45:09 But for the immediacy of what it was,
00:45:12 I was always intrigued and I was always kind of gripped by it.
00:45:15 I mean, like, you have this very compelling central mystery
00:45:19 of like, what's in the freaking maze?
00:45:21 You know, like, what's going on out there?
00:45:23 What does this all mean?
00:45:24 And so I think a movie like this in certain ways
00:45:28 benefits greatly off that sense of mystery.
00:45:34 And certainly by the end,
00:45:35 they do give you more mystery to look forward to.
00:45:39 But yeah, I mean, it's one of those things
00:45:41 where sort of like once you're out, you're like, okay.
00:45:44 So the monsters were out there
00:45:46 and then we just kind of had to find the right,
00:45:48 you know, sequence of MacGuffins and things
00:45:50 and then we're able to break it.
00:45:51 Like, it's more linear and straightforward
00:45:54 than it presents itself to be, which is-
00:45:56 - Yeah, like it was gonna be like a bait and switch.
00:45:59 Like you thought it was gonna have
00:46:00 like more of a like tricky reveal.
00:46:02 - I thought it was gonna blow my mind or something.
00:46:04 - Yeah. - And like, it's cool.
00:46:05 Like, I'm not like griping at it
00:46:07 for not having like some like amazing unexpected twist.
00:46:12 - Right.
00:46:12 - Yeah, I mean, like knowing again,
00:46:14 the lane that this originates from
00:46:17 and knowing that a lot of those stories
00:46:19 tend to be some kind of dystopian apocalyptic society.
00:46:23 Maybe there's an ecological angle.
00:46:25 Like, you know, I mean, all that stuff is kind of fun
00:46:27 and interesting as a reveal.
00:46:29 Like, oh, the earth has been scorched
00:46:30 and we gotta, you know, run some weirdo tests
00:46:35 on these kids. - Yeah.
00:46:36 - Like it begs a lot of questions in terms of like,
00:46:39 okay, so this is like a shelter thing,
00:46:41 but they're running this game
00:46:43 and it seems like part of the game is carnage.
00:46:47 And so like, - Yeah.
00:46:49 - It leaves you with questions, certainly,
00:46:52 which again is most likely by design.
00:46:55 It's one of those things where I find myself
00:46:56 wondering how the sequels will play out
00:46:58 and if they will deliver on getting more interesting
00:47:02 versus, you know, - Versus like,
00:47:03 kind of laying groundwork right now?
00:47:06 Or will it plummet?
00:47:07 Like, will it-- - Will it fall into being like,
00:47:09 oh, okay, like here's a dystopian sci-fi thing
00:47:11 of like a bunch of young people leading a resistance
00:47:14 that I've, you know, kind of seen a lot of times before.
00:47:16 - Yeah, that we've seen before.
00:47:18 - Yes, like having the maze and having, you know,
00:47:20 the isolation of like, we're in the glade
00:47:23 and like, you know, we can stay here, everything's fine,
00:47:25 or we can go out into this crazy unknown turf.
00:47:28 And so without that, you know,
00:47:30 I'm sure they'll come up with something else.
00:47:31 I'm sure that there's a reason why it's a popular series.
00:47:35 - Yeah. - But yeah, it kind of,
00:47:37 you know, runs its course for the maze itself.
00:47:40 And I don't know, like part of me maybe wished
00:47:44 that we could have seen some of the real like,
00:47:47 unknowns of the maze.
00:47:48 - Yeah, like I kind of thought, right,
00:47:50 with the number that was on the thing,
00:47:53 or mixed with like the maze numbers,
00:47:55 which yes, that came in at the end, which we assumed.
00:47:58 But I kind of thought like,
00:47:59 maybe it would be like a reveal, like,
00:48:02 oh, the way for us to get out, the secret is like us.
00:48:06 Like the people that they would have had, I don't know,
00:48:11 especially with Thomas and Teresa, like remembering,
00:48:13 they're the ones who remembered stuff.
00:48:15 They came up at the end.
00:48:16 I get that they were working on it smart,
00:48:18 like we kept you in here.
00:48:20 But I don't know, I felt like there would be,
00:48:23 but I know the book's already written,
00:48:24 but there would be like a reveal that like,
00:48:26 I don't know, that the secret was like in them
00:48:29 and they had to like figure more out.
00:48:33 I don't know.
00:48:34 - I did like, I love the relationship
00:48:36 between him and Chuck and I like that a lot.
00:48:40 I didn't get as sad as I think I maybe would have
00:48:45 because it's probably not enough time
00:48:47 to really build up his relationship with Chuck,
00:48:49 but in the book, I bet you there is, right?
00:48:52 I would have cried when Chuck died if I was reading the book.
00:48:56 But for some reason, it didn't, it hit me, trust me, it did.
00:48:59 I just didn't like, it didn't hit me super hard.
00:49:02 Like maybe it could have
00:49:04 if there was a little more of a buildup,
00:49:06 but you gotta get to the action, so I get it.
00:49:09 - Well, yeah, and it's one of those like very end,
00:49:12 sort of like bleak world stingers of like,
00:49:15 ah, and I thought that maybe there was gonna be
00:49:18 some kind of greater reveal with Gally.
00:49:21 Maybe that he was like the plant all along
00:49:24 making sure they don't try and leave.
00:49:27 Or maybe he knows what's outside
00:49:29 and he hasn't let on why he is so attached
00:49:32 to being in the glade.
00:49:34 But yeah, it mostly, at least here in this execution,
00:49:38 reads like, ah, we just need one more heart-crushing sting
00:49:42 of some sort to just remind you
00:49:45 that certain things are just too good for this harsh world
00:49:49 and Chuck is one of them.
00:49:50 - Yeah, I would have liked it if at the end,
00:49:52 if he had remembered what was out there
00:49:54 and how life was shitty,
00:49:56 and he's like confessing that like,
00:49:59 it was really hard for him out there and it sucked
00:50:03 and this is why he wants to be here
00:50:04 and this is like, this is me re-imagining the movie
00:50:07 and he's crying and he's like,
00:50:09 this is the only family I found is here in this box.
00:50:14 And then they're like, oh man, poor Gally,
00:50:16 he's just a jerk 'cause he had a hard life.
00:50:19 I don't know, something like that.
00:50:21 - Yeah, and I'm sure, I don't know,
00:50:24 I don't think we'll get any more sort of expounding on that.
00:50:27 And like, again, it's not a major complaint of mine
00:50:31 'cause again, part of the charm of a movie like this
00:50:33 is that you're just thrust into a situation,
00:50:34 you don't know much about anybody,
00:50:36 but yeah, like for as much as that was,
00:50:40 like without that becoming a moment
00:50:43 of greater personal significance,
00:50:46 it does feel sort of like one final gotcha
00:50:49 'cause, you know, I mean, I don't know,
00:50:52 I thought there could have been some kind of arc
00:50:53 or some kind of thing with him where, you know,
00:50:56 it's like, oh, I was wrong or I followed you guys out,
00:50:58 please, you know, like accept me or something
00:51:00 or please let me come along.
00:51:01 - Yeah, true, like, wait up for me.
00:51:03 - Yeah, I don't know, like I thought that, yeah,
00:51:06 that ending beat could have been more rich in character stuff
00:51:10 that would have made it more,
00:51:12 feel a little less like a puppy killing, you know?
00:51:16 - That's true.
00:51:17 - To make sure that, you know,
00:51:18 Thomas becomes that much more hardened next time.
00:51:21 - Yeah.
00:51:22 - And, you know, I mean, like Theresa's certainly
00:51:25 interesting presence, not much of a character
00:51:27 we really learn about ever. - That's like another thing
00:51:28 that I'm like, what the heck?
00:51:30 Like she was just like there and she came with a note
00:51:33 and then we didn't really give her any more juice than that.
00:51:37 - Yeah, and it's, again, I know that the counter
00:51:40 will probably be like, well, in the sequel,
00:51:42 she's gonna be a lot more important.
00:51:43 - Yeah, yeah.
00:51:45 - For the execution here, if I only saw this movie,
00:51:48 I would be like, eh, I kinda wanna get to know her
00:51:50 a little bit better.
00:51:50 - Yeah.
00:51:51 - Or, you know, establish some kind of connection,
00:51:55 you know, 'cause they have the whole thing about like,
00:51:57 we know each other, we used to work right across
00:51:59 from each other. - Yeah.
00:51:59 - But it's only kind of a, just one of many details
00:52:03 touched upon, you know?
00:52:04 - That's touched upon and left in the, like, very quickly.
00:52:08 - Yeah, and it's like all the maze stuff is cool,
00:52:10 the effects are neat, like the idea is really cool
00:52:13 and I think, you know, you can't make this like
00:52:15 a two and a half hour movie necessarily.
00:52:17 But, you know, it's, once you're on the other side of it,
00:52:21 I think it's that, it's like, since they already have
00:52:23 the whole place mapped out, I get the utility
00:52:25 of that plot choice, but at the same time, I'm like,
00:52:29 we could like, learn about, I don't know,
00:52:31 'cause like, we are, we're doing it through Dylan O'Brien's
00:52:34 perspective, but at the same time, I don't know.
00:52:36 It's pretty straight, I guess that's what I keep
00:52:39 coming back to, is like, for as much as this seems
00:52:41 like a big, complicated puzzle. - It's straightforward,
00:52:41 linear, yeah.
00:52:42 - It's pretty straightforward, and I think too,
00:52:44 it's like, once he goes into the maze and figures it out,
00:52:48 you know, what to kind of look for and, you know,
00:52:51 kills the Reaver, Griever and all that stuff,
00:52:55 you know, that pretty much sets you directly on the path,
00:52:58 whereas me, I'm sitting here going,
00:53:00 well, there are like eight quadrants,
00:53:01 they all must be different, or are they all,
00:53:03 or, you know, is it just like, any one of these
00:53:06 could have been the exit, you know,
00:53:08 why is it that they found-- - Right, the one.
00:53:10 - It's that thing, it's like, they found number seven first
00:53:12 and number seven is the exit, it's what they thought,
00:53:15 I thought they were gonna do something like that,
00:53:16 where it's like, oh, it's just the next level
00:53:18 of the game, but it's not the exit.
00:53:20 - It's not the exit.
00:53:21 - And spiritually, that's true, 'cause at the end,
00:53:25 Patricia Clarkson's like, you know,
00:53:27 - This isn't the end. - I wish I could tell you
00:53:28 this is the end, but this is just the beginning.
00:53:30 But, you know, like, we're out into the world now,
00:53:33 so like, I don't know, unless they're gonna prison break
00:53:37 this and find a way to maneuver them into a new maze,
00:53:40 and this is just a future that deals with its problems
00:53:42 via maze.
00:53:43 - It's just a scorched earth with multiple mazes on it,
00:53:46 and they just throw children in there.
00:53:49 - Yeah. - They're like, good luck.
00:53:50 - Yeah, and I thought, you know, the idea of the whole,
00:53:53 like, wicked is good thing, you know,
00:53:56 was an interesting mantra to kind of get you thinking
00:54:00 about human nature, and then by the end, you're like,
00:54:01 oh, it must be that, you know, this organization
00:54:04 are the good guys, maybe, and we shouldn't trust
00:54:06 the people who are in rescuing the kids right now.
00:54:08 - Right.
00:54:10 - But I don't know, this idea of like,
00:54:12 I thought that's what it said on the outside,
00:54:14 was like, wicked-- - Shelter?
00:54:16 - Shelter, or something like that, and guys,
00:54:19 I think it's funny that they went with wicked
00:54:22 as their acronym was, and world--
00:54:24 - It's like, world something. - World catastrophe
00:54:27 kill zone something, or kill department, I don't know.
00:54:30 - Yeah.
00:54:31 - They're funny, like, earmarks to me that do very much,
00:54:36 again, hearken to, you know, the fun of a YA novel
00:54:42 adaptation, 'cause again, it's all about--
00:54:44 - Yeah, like, wicked is good.
00:54:45 - We got the cool terminology-- - The good one-liner, man.
00:54:47 - And all of our different lore that we're gonna set up
00:54:49 for you in a, you know, and, you know, for an immediate,
00:54:54 I think I enjoyed the immediate experience of this
00:54:56 quite a bit, and I enjoyed the movie in hindsight
00:55:00 once it was concluded, like, I thought it was pretty good.
00:55:02 It was fun, and it was, you know, intriguing,
00:55:06 but it's gonna, you know, like, the sequel or whatever
00:55:10 is gonna have to, like, really kind of set itself apart
00:55:12 from various other, like, the world has been destroyed,
00:55:15 and we're trying to rebuild it,
00:55:16 and you're the special with the cure.
00:55:18 You know, yeah, like, it's that, I think,
00:55:21 is like the early parts of the movie have you going,
00:55:24 like, this is really fascinating, and I'm not even thinking
00:55:26 about other stories like this, and then when you get
00:55:30 to the end, I'm like, now I'm thinking of a lot
00:55:31 of other stories. - Yeah, yeah.
00:55:34 It's true, I feel like the writer was, like,
00:55:36 he was thinking about a phrase that people would use
00:55:39 after they read his book, and it's everybody
00:55:41 who has the book, and they're like, "Wicked is good."
00:55:45 You know that that's what they're doing, and like,
00:55:48 I'm like, oh, that's probably their inside thing.
00:55:50 Like, I'm surprised in 2014 I didn't see, like,
00:55:53 teenagers walking around with T-shirts
00:55:55 that say "Wicked is good," but then I might've been like,
00:55:57 you mean the musical, or, you know,
00:56:00 might've been confusing.
00:56:02 - Yeah, or just, you know, Boston slang again.
00:56:05 - Anyway, I give it-- - Wicked means good.
00:56:07 - Wicked means good, and I'll give it,
00:56:09 I'll give it a seven out of 10.
00:56:13 What do you give it, John?
00:56:15 Lay down. - Oh, yeah.
00:56:16 - 6.5, maybe, 'cause, you know.
00:56:19 - We're probably in the same, but I was gonna go out of five
00:56:22 and say, like, you know, three, three and a half.
00:56:24 Like, it's pretty good. - Yeah.
00:56:25 - It's pretty good, like, I thought it was well-assembled.
00:56:28 I thought it was really-- - Yeah, I agree.
00:56:30 - Yeah, like, I thought the performers all did
00:56:32 a really nice job, I thought the way they, you know,
00:56:34 established the world of their camp was really nice.
00:56:38 I liked a lot of the details of how they were living
00:56:40 and how they shot a lot of this, the intensity,
00:56:43 and just the way they captured a lot of the effects
00:56:45 and a lot of the action sequences felt appropriately
00:56:48 thrilling and harrowing and intense and whatnot.
00:56:51 And again, in, you know, when you're still deep
00:56:54 in the mystery, I was really intrigued by that stuff.
00:56:56 So I think, like, you know, behind the camera,
00:56:58 there was a lot of good work going on.
00:57:00 - Yeah, that's true.
00:57:01 - And then, yeah, you know, as an actual story,
00:57:04 this is all right, pretty good.
00:57:05 - Yeah, I think it's like, I always think in my head,
00:57:07 I go to story, but then I was like,
00:57:09 oh man, but those scenes with the spiders,
00:57:10 like, John's remembering it more than me,
00:57:13 but now I'm like, I'm in it, and I'm like,
00:57:15 those were pretty dope, those were awesome.
00:57:17 - And I'm like, what are those things?
00:57:18 - Yeah, exactly. - Like, did you guys
00:57:20 make these for these trials, or is this part
00:57:23 of the immunity thing? - Yeah.
00:57:24 - Like, you know, did you, like, capture a few,
00:57:28 mod them out, and then, you know, 'cause it seems like
00:57:31 it was all because of, you know, global warming,
00:57:34 weather catastrophes, so what accounts for these creatures?
00:57:38 Are they purely yours, is there something else
00:57:41 at work there, again, I'm sure we'll find out in a sequel.
00:57:45 - But we wanna know now!
00:57:47 - But yeah, there were ways in which this could've felt
00:57:49 like a more well-rounded movie experience on its own.
00:57:52 - Yeah, like a more well-rounded story.
00:57:55 - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - Yeah, all right, well,
00:57:57 we did it, we watched it, we liked it,
00:58:00 we'll probably watch it, you guys should comment.
00:58:03 - And let us know if we should watch the next one.
00:58:05 I would also be happy to watch the next one.
00:58:07 I mean, we should just do it, and then be like,
00:58:10 well, we'll all watch it together, we'll all decide.
00:58:14 But you guys should also be like,
00:58:15 you should watch the next one.
00:58:17 But don't do any spoilers in case we are going to.
00:58:20 - Yeah. - Yeah, and what else
00:58:22 do I say in closing, John? - I wanna see you react
00:58:25 to all the things I just told you about.
00:58:27 I think we're good, I think you wanna shout out
00:58:30 a patron really quick before we get out of here?
00:58:32 - Let's do that thing. - Let's do it.
00:58:35 - Anissa Oliva, there's only one girl in the movie,
00:58:40 but now you're the second, well, Tara's here too,
00:58:43 but you were one of the few girls involved
00:58:46 with the Maze Runner experience today.
00:58:48 And if we were caught in the maze,
00:58:49 I would absolutely want you on our team
00:58:52 because you are a caring person,
00:58:54 but you're also a person who knows your way around
00:58:57 health and medicine type things.
00:58:59 Also, you're just the kind of person who is tenacious.
00:59:04 If we had to figure the maze out,
00:59:06 I feel like you would keep us on track,
00:59:09 you would keep us feeling good, morale high.
00:59:11 - Yeah, and she'd also be able to heal wounds or something?
00:59:14 - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - That's good.
00:59:15 - And if we found out later that you were secretly involved
00:59:19 with experimenting on us and stuff,
00:59:22 I would be willing to give you the benefit of the doubt
00:59:24 and still accept you. - I would just kill you.
00:59:28 - I mean, also valid.
00:59:29 I'm gonna have to protect you from Tara,
00:59:30 and that's also what this shout out is for,
00:59:32 is just to let you know that you should watch your back too.
00:59:36 - It's like, man, you were in there,
00:59:37 you were doing an experience with these spiders in the maze.
00:59:39 I'm like, nope, nope, that's some BS.
00:59:42 Like, you gotta go, you know?
00:59:44 So, whatever, I guess when we see each other--
00:59:47 - We're pushing you out into the maze now, Anissa,
00:59:50 but keep your pledge on file
00:59:51 because that's what really this is all about.
00:59:53 - Definitely keep it, and if we ever meet in person,
00:59:56 he's your buddy, and I guess maybe I'm not,
00:59:58 but if we watch another movie, though,
01:00:02 and we do another shout out ways from now,
01:00:05 it might be a different story with you, Anissa,
01:00:07 and then we could be friends again.
01:00:08 So, you gotta keep your patronage
01:00:10 so we can see where our relationship goes,
01:00:12 friendship-wise, you know?
01:00:14 - I like that idea.
01:00:14 - Yeah, it's a good idea, right?
01:00:16 - Maybe you'll come out of the other side as friends.
01:00:18 - Yeah, you never know. - And you'll both kill me.
01:00:20 - Ooh, the other side of the rainbow.
01:00:22 - Boom, appreciate ya, we'll see you there.
01:00:25 - Love you, Anissa. - Love you, bye!
01:00:27 - Peace!
01:00:28 (electronic music)
01:00:31 (upbeat music)
