00:00:00 Didn't you ever tell you that the best pass of his career
00:00:02 was the touchdown to him on Rousey
00:00:03 at the end of the game?
00:00:04 - Yeah.
00:00:05 - That moment, boom, couldn't contain himself.
00:00:08 He's like, "I just, what?"
00:00:10 - That's awesome.
00:00:11 - For like 30 straight seconds, right?
00:00:13 Just getting up and walking around.
00:00:14 - On today's part of my take,
00:00:19 we have our good friend Field Yates.
00:00:23 Actually a recurring guest,
00:00:24 'cause he helped us prank Mike Florio a couple years ago.
00:00:27 Good friend of the program.
00:00:29 He, actually it's kind of weird, PFT,
00:00:32 we got guests changing their flights for us.
00:00:35 So Jerry O'Connell on Friday flew into Chicago.
00:00:38 Field Yates extended his stay in Chicago
00:00:40 just to be on the show.
00:00:41 - Let's not book Mark Wahlberg on the show.
00:00:43 We could have another national security.
00:00:44 - That's true, that's true.
00:00:45 Field Yates was great though.
00:00:47 We did an entire preview of the NFL.
00:00:49 He gave us some fantasy little sleepers here and there.
00:00:52 Very smart guy, knows the league.
00:00:55 Get us ready for football being back this week.
00:00:58 We're gonna talk some college football.
00:00:59 A lot of great college football.

00:03:16 And thank you to Coors Light and the Chill Throne.

00:03:19 (upbeat music)
00:03:22 (upbeat music)
00:03:25 (upbeat music)
00:03:27 (upbeat music)
00:03:30 (upbeat music)
00:03:32 (upbeat music)
00:03:35 (upbeat music)
00:03:37 Welcome to part of my take.
00:03:39 Today is Tuesday, September 5th,
00:03:43 and PFT, college football is back.
00:03:46 - Football is back, baby.
00:03:48 - Football is back.
00:03:48 - I have a question for you, Big Cat.
00:03:49 - Yes.
00:03:50 - Do you believe now?
00:03:51 - Yeah, well, I believe now.
00:03:52 - Do you believe now?
00:03:53 - So I wanted to start with Dion,
00:03:55 but I want to do even take it to a macro level.
00:03:59 The Pac-12 is back.
00:04:01 - Oh, okay, fully.
00:04:02 - So the Pac-12 is back.
00:04:03 - Did Dion switch the balance of college football?
00:04:05 - The Pac-12 is dead, we know that.
00:04:07 But for one last year, they're back.
00:04:09 You ready for this stat?
00:04:10 This is from Greg Mroz, M-R-O-Z.
00:04:14 Greg Mroz.
00:04:15 - Like Justin Mroz?
00:04:16 - Yeah, yeah, exactly.
00:04:17 Since 1980, no conference has ever won
00:04:20 their first 13 games of the season.
00:04:24 The Pac-12 did it this year.
00:04:25 - That's pretty spectacular.
00:04:26 - That's pretty insane.
00:04:27 The last year of the Pac-12,
00:04:28 and the Pac-12 went 13 and 0 to start the season.
00:04:33 - Yeah, it's pretty good.
00:04:33 I mean, shout out Dion, though.
00:04:35 - Yeah.
00:04:36 - Nobody believed in Dion.
00:04:37 We believed in Dion.
00:04:37 - Love it.
00:04:38 - I know we picked him, off air.
00:04:40 We talked about it off the air,
00:04:41 we didn't say it on the air.
00:04:42 But we believe, we believe in Dion.
00:04:44 I believe in Travis Hunter.
00:04:45 - Oh.
00:04:46 - I believe in Travis Hunter.
00:04:47 - 129 snaps.
00:04:48 - So he played 129 snaps.
00:04:50 He had 11 catches for 119 yards on offense.
00:04:53 On defense, he had two tackles and an interception.
00:04:56 Now, their defense wasn't spectacular,
00:04:58 but they did enough to win.
00:05:00 This is a crazy stat here.
00:05:01 You ready?
00:05:02 The last two players with 20 receptions
00:05:04 and three interceptions in a season
00:05:07 are Chris Gamble and Champ Bailey.
00:05:09 Travis Hunter already has 11 receptions
00:05:11 and one interception.
00:05:12 - Yeah, it hasn't been done.
00:05:14 - Wild.
00:05:14 - What he did hasn't been done in 20 years.
00:05:17 Shadur Sanders was incredible.
00:05:20 510 yards, four receivers with 100 yards or more.
00:05:24 Shout out Sean Lewis, the OC.
00:05:26 He's a badger from Kent State.
00:05:28 He went, you know, he was a head coach at Kent State.
00:05:30 Was like, I'm gonna go to Colorado
00:05:31 and I'm just gonna fucking turn this thing up
00:05:33 with these guys.
00:05:34 That game was awesome.
00:05:36 Dion pisses people off so much.
00:05:40 I love Dion Sanders so much because he makes our job easy.
00:05:44 Because he starts, Dion is basically
00:05:48 the tree of life in Avatar for takes.
00:05:52 So people get so upset at what Dion's doing.
00:05:55 And Dion also liked the receipts
00:05:57 and going and just attacking reporters, which I love.
00:05:59 Then we had an entire discussion
00:06:01 about reporters being fanboys
00:06:03 and how Dion's wrong for saying that people doubted him.
00:06:07 That's not their job.
00:06:09 And it's like, well, no, Dion's pumping himself up.
00:06:11 This is what Dion's doing to get his team motivated,
00:06:14 to get his school motivated,
00:06:15 to get his program motivated,
00:06:17 to going from a one win season
00:06:19 to then beating the national title runner up
00:06:24 as a 20 and a half point underdog
00:06:26 at their home stadium week one.
00:06:29 It was shocking and awesome and everything.
00:06:31 So Dion, the takes that I saw,
00:06:33 I have two that I wanna share with you, PFT.
00:06:36 One is from Sed Golden,
00:06:39 who when we started the discussion about fanboys
00:06:42 in college football and people being like,
00:06:45 well, we're not supposed to say that,
00:06:47 you know, Dion's calling out receipts.
00:06:50 That's not our job.
00:06:51 Our job is to objectively report.
00:06:53 And it's ridiculous that he would like say this.
00:06:56 Sed Golden said, "Don't get me started on the blurry line
00:06:59 "between fans and journalists,
00:07:01 "wearing the team's colors to the game,
00:07:03 "saying we during reports, et cetera,
00:07:06 "makes me physically ill."
00:07:08 - He's, you know what he is?
00:07:09 He's we fended by that.
00:07:11 - Yes, yes.
00:07:12 - Shout out to him for the great offense.
00:07:14 - We don't have offense, defense, we have we fence.
00:07:16 - Jim Harbaugh who passed away tragically
00:07:18 over the weekend. - That was tough.
00:07:20 His players went out there,
00:07:21 lined up information for him in remembrance
00:07:23 of the legacy that left behind at Michigan.
00:07:25 It was tragic.
00:07:27 - They were wearing free Harbaugh shirts
00:07:28 getting off the bus.
00:07:29 - They should have a, wear the black patch.
00:07:31 - He did self-impose that punishment.
00:07:33 I know that it's bullshit.
00:07:34 We stand with Jim Harbaugh against the NCAA,
00:07:38 but that was by the technical ruling,
00:07:41 he suspended himself.
00:07:43 - Yeah. - And they're like free Harbaugh.
00:07:44 - In the big metaphor, this was,
00:07:45 it was suey season for Jim Harbaugh.
00:07:47 And then they lined up to remember their coach.
00:07:49 - And held fours.
00:07:50 - Hold their fours up for Jim.
00:07:51 - Held their fours in his formation.
00:07:53 But yeah, the journalists are very upset.
00:07:56 It's physically ill.
00:07:57 He, said Golden has his head next to Ben Verlander
00:08:02 in the toilet right now.
00:08:02 - I'm gonna be sick.
00:08:03 - Yeah, they're like, "You're sick when I heard about this."
00:08:05 - Yeah, I hold your sho-hey
00:08:07 and people rooting for, journalists rooting for team.
00:08:10 - So I don't mind what Deion did,
00:08:12 which is basically took some questions.
00:08:13 And then if he didn't like what the journalist had written,
00:08:16 he'd be like, "I saw what you wrote about."
00:08:17 He basically said, "You're fake news, next question."
00:08:20 And if the reporter prognosticated this game,
00:08:23 got it wildly incorrect, what was going into it,
00:08:27 then Deion has every right to be like,
00:08:28 "You don't know what you're talking about."
00:08:29 - And again, he's using it as motivation for himself.
00:08:32 This is how Deion runs.
00:08:33 Like this is what you get.
00:08:35 He's very transparent with who he is and it works.
00:08:38 - And the funny part is,
00:08:39 you'll get people that stand up for the journalists
00:08:41 because journalists overall have an important job to do
00:08:44 in society, I would say,
00:08:45 if they do it correctly and they do it well.
00:08:47 But you can't get mad at Deion Sanders
00:08:50 for not answering questions when you then get to go ahead
00:08:54 and you write 700 words about Deion Sanders
00:08:58 not answering questions
00:09:00 because you're fulfilling your own content right there.
00:09:02 - Exactly, back to the Deion Sanders is a tree of life.
00:09:05 - Yeah, so- - For takes.
00:09:06 He keeps the world going.
00:09:08 - Yeah, so he's well within his rights to be like,
00:09:11 "I'm not answering your question."
00:09:12 It's like when Marshawn Lynch, before the Super Bowl,
00:09:14 was like, "I'm just here so I don't get fined."
00:09:16 And all the reporters are like,
00:09:18 "I can't believe this guy won't let us do our jobs.
00:09:21 "I know what I'll do.
00:09:22 "I'll write 2000 words about how he won't let us
00:09:24 "do our jobs."
00:09:24 Boom, he gave it to you.
00:09:25 When Cam Newton, when he didn't answer questions
00:09:27 after the Super Bowl,
00:09:28 what a classless piece of shit that guy is.
00:09:31 I can't believe I can't follow a column.
00:09:32 I'm on deadline.
00:09:34 Oh wait, I'm currently typing my take right now
00:09:36 about how Cam Newton is a classless piece of shit.
00:09:38 - Yes, Deion, journalists should be thanking
00:09:40 their lucky stars that Deion Sanders is part
00:09:42 of college football because he makes it more fun.
00:09:44 - I'm sure it doesn't feel good not to have
00:09:46 a warm, fleshy relationship with the coach
00:09:48 of the school that you cover.
00:09:49 - Should have said they were gonna win.
00:09:50 - You should have just sucked his dick.
00:09:51 - Yeah, you should have said it.
00:09:52 Should have put on a jersey and said they were gonna win.
00:09:55 - It's not rocket science what you have to do here.
00:09:58 There's a reason why we just kiss all of our friends' asses
00:10:00 all the time.
00:10:01 - Yeah, we come and we come and we came.
00:10:02 - Yeah.
00:10:03 - I think Deion said that afterwards in the post game.
00:10:05 - Yeah, that's Vinny, Vinny, Vinny.
00:10:07 I came, I came, I came.
00:10:08 - Yeah, the other one.
00:10:10 This one was great.
00:10:11 So there was also like, Deion obviously said something
00:10:15 about how he pisses people off because his black head coach
00:10:19 was 75% African American team.
00:10:21 I think he, again, I think Deion is using everything
00:10:24 just to motivate himself and his team, which I love
00:10:26 because it works, that's what he does.
00:10:28 So then there became a whole discussion about that
00:10:31 and there was videos of TCU students saying,
00:10:34 "Fuck you, Deion Sanders," before the game.
00:10:37 There also was a video that was incredible
00:10:39 of TCU student section saying, "Throw it to Hunter,
00:10:42 "throw it to Hunter," and then Travis Hunter
00:10:44 made the goal line interception,
00:10:45 which was an incredible play,
00:10:47 which that was beautiful, beautiful karma.
00:10:50 - Throw it to Hunter, let's go.
00:10:52 (crowd cheering)
00:10:53 - Fuck yeah!
00:10:54 - Credit to the person that was taking that video too
00:10:59 because they had the presence of mind to reverse
00:11:01 the camera angle right after the interception
00:11:03 and all the kids were like just stone faced,
00:11:05 like, "Oh my God," and then somebody goes like,
00:11:07 "Who said that?"
00:11:08 I think it was the guy who was holding the camera
00:11:10 and said it, he's like, "Who said it?
00:11:11 "Put your hand up."
00:11:12 So anyway, a big discussion started
00:11:14 and then Clarence Hill Jr. tweeted this out,
00:11:17 which he then deleted because he got just dunked on royally,
00:11:21 but he said, "You think opposing fans tell Nick Saban
00:11:24 "or Mac Brown, 'F word you'," he wrote out word,
00:11:27 "F word you," before the game,
00:11:30 "or is that reserved for Deion Sanders?
00:11:32 "I've been on sidelines before and I haven't heard it."
00:11:35 The very first reply was from 2014
00:11:38 when on the CBS Game of the Week,
00:11:42 the loudest "Fuck you, Saban" chant
00:11:44 was happening in Baton Rouge.
00:11:46 And then he was like, "Oh, whoops,
00:11:47 "I probably fucked this up."
00:11:49 But again, Deion Sanders, take machine.
00:11:52 Like I love that everyone,
00:11:54 everyone has a feeling about him
00:11:56 and they're like, "Let me get some takes off."
00:11:58 And they're usually wrong and stupid,
00:12:00 but they're great for the ecosystem.
00:12:01 - And he's great for the sport.
00:12:03 He's awesome for the sport.
00:12:04 We love having these polarizing coaches
00:12:06 that you can get your takes off about.
00:12:08 So I'm glad, I'm happy to see what Deion did.
00:12:11 You know what?
00:12:12 I think they're gonna win by 30 next week in Nebraska.
00:12:15 I'm just gonna say that, that way,
00:12:16 Deion, you hear me saying this,
00:12:18 you can't get mad at me, I'm on your side.
00:12:20 You're gonna win by 30 against Nebraska.
00:12:22 - It's also the minute,
00:12:24 I don't think Colorado's gonna go undefeated.
00:12:25 I probably shouldn't say that, but--
00:12:27 - I do, I think they will. - They have a very tough
00:12:28 schedule, okay? - I think they will.
00:12:30 - Already Deion has proven that he's turned
00:12:32 this whole thing, they won one game last year.
00:12:34 - Well, so a lot of the conversations about Deion,
00:12:36 rightfully so, but his son, Shadour--
00:12:38 - Oh, it's incredible. - Is one of the best
00:12:39 quarterbacks in the country now, it looks like.
00:12:41 - And everyone was asking, can he take the step up?
00:12:43 And he did that more so than we all expected.
00:12:47 But people will, when Deion takes his first loss,
00:12:51 the world will come at Deion and that's how this goes.
00:12:54 It's just a pendulum that's gonna swing back and forth
00:12:57 that's gonna be so much fun to watch.
00:12:59 We are Deion guys, I'm hoping they go undefeated.
00:13:01 - It'd be sick. - But you know
00:13:02 that's coming. - Yeah.
00:13:03 - But Deion doesn't care. - No, he doesn't care.
00:13:04 - He knows that that's coming, he knows that he talks shit.
00:13:07 - And that's-- - But he backs it up
00:13:09 more times than not. - That's gonna give him
00:13:10 more motivation. - Correct.
00:13:12 - Once they do start losing. - They're gonna have
00:13:13 to come again. - They're gonna get better
00:13:14 once they start losing, it's gonna be wild.
00:13:16 So yeah, people are saying that, I saw a lot of takes
00:13:19 out there about how TCU's defense sucks and how, you know,
00:13:23 this isn't indicative of what they'll be able to do
00:13:24 for the rest of the year.
00:13:26 And they had the recency bias of the last game
00:13:28 that TCU played where they got smoked in the natty.
00:13:31 But according to Jim Nagy, who runs the Senior Bowl,
00:13:34 they've got like three or four future NFL players
00:13:37 in their secondary. - Right.
00:13:38 - So they're actually not that bad of a defense.
00:13:41 They're a little bit undersized up front,
00:13:42 but that's, if you're talking about like their secondary,
00:13:44 they're very talented. - Yes.
00:13:46 - This was not-- - They're 20 and a half
00:13:48 point out of favorites. - Yeah, this was not a fluke.
00:13:51 Shador Sanders is a fucking monster quarterback.
00:13:53 - He's gonna be-- - Very, very good.
00:13:54 - Really good. - Yes.
00:13:56 All right, so other story.
00:13:57 - Also those white Colorado uniforms looked awesome.
00:13:59 - So good. - Now they--
00:14:00 - So clean. - They looked like shit
00:14:01 when they're getting their asses kicked.
00:14:03 But when they win wearing those, they look really good.
00:14:05 - It's also very funny, and this isn't supposed to be
00:14:08 against Nebraska 'cause they should've won that game
00:14:10 against Minnesota, that was unfortunate.
00:14:12 They somehow figured out a way to get Matt Rule,
00:14:16 who is gonna probably write their program,
00:14:18 and then just play the most Scott Frost game ever.
00:14:21 They gotta just flush that out of their system.
00:14:23 But it is very funny that Nebraska and Colorado,
00:14:25 which used to be like a great, great rivalry,
00:14:29 that's gonna be a huge, huge game on Saturday,
00:14:32 and Colorado's back before Nebraska is.
00:14:35 - Yeah, yeah. - They somehow beat 'em back.
00:14:37 A team that had no hope and was in utter despair
00:14:41 has beaten Nebraska to the back meter.
00:14:44 And maybe Nebraska can win on Saturday
00:14:47 in that they get more back, but right now,
00:14:50 Colorado is more back than Nebraska.
00:14:51 - Yeah, now if Texas wins on Saturday,
00:14:53 they're more back than Colorado, I think.
00:14:55 - Oh yeah, Texas and Tuscaloosa for sure, absolutely.
00:14:58 - We were on back watch right now.
00:14:59 - Yes, other big moments, Florida State is back.
00:15:03 That was an incredible second half against LSU.
00:15:06 Listen, we love the people of Louisiana,
00:15:11 we love the fans of LSU,
00:15:12 but this is the same conversation we had last year.
00:15:15 You gotta coach that is probably
00:15:17 the least likable person in the world,
00:15:20 outside of maybe Urban Meyer.
00:15:22 And so when they lose-- - Bill Cosby.
00:15:24 - Like I feel bad, yeah, Bill Cosby, maybe.
00:15:26 - Yeah. - Yeah, they're all--
00:15:28 - It's a short list.
00:15:29 - Yeah, in terms of football coaches though,
00:15:30 he's probably the most least likable football coach
00:15:34 in college football right now.
00:15:35 So when you lose, I can't feel bad
00:15:38 'cause I just, Brian Kelly's so unlikable as a person.
00:15:42 And I do feel bad for LSU fans 'cause I love LSU fans,
00:15:46 but this is the, you went from like the most likable guy
00:15:50 in Coach O to Brian Kelly,
00:15:52 and so when you lose on a national stage,
00:15:54 there's a little bit of like,
00:15:55 ha ha, look at Brian Kelly and his mad face.
00:15:57 - For sure, it was an ass kicking in the second half.
00:16:00 LSU came out the gate strong.
00:16:01 When they didn't score on that first drive
00:16:03 where they had, they got down to the goal line pretty much.
00:16:06 That was a bad miss, it went downhill from there.
00:16:08 Their offense didn't look good for the rest of the game.
00:16:10 - Yeah, it was stupid analytics by the way.
00:16:12 That was just going four downs
00:16:14 and only running it on first down?
00:16:16 - Yeah. - Come on.
00:16:17 - Come on, guys. - Come on.
00:16:18 - I was watching it with Hard Factor Will,
00:16:19 who is an LSU alum.
00:16:20 He went with us to the national championship
00:16:22 that they won down in Louisiana.
00:16:25 And he very unironically was screaming
00:16:27 at halftime, fire Brian Kelly's ass,
00:16:30 get his ass out of here.
00:16:31 I don't know if that's the majority opinion of LSU fans,
00:16:34 but I do know that they don't like losing
00:16:37 with Brian Kelly as their coach.
00:16:38 They can tolerate losing with Coach O as their coach,
00:16:43 as long as they're building towards something.
00:16:44 But any small mistake by Brian Kelly
00:16:47 is gonna be magnified.
00:16:47 They're like, this fucking carpetbagger coming down here
00:16:50 and ruining our football program, get the fuck out.
00:16:53 So they don't want him out.
00:16:56 It's not the vast majority opinion,
00:16:57 but I do think that if he doesn't have a big season
00:17:01 this year, you will hear some serious discussion
00:17:03 about how much will it cost to get rid of him.
00:17:06 - It's the winning cures all.
00:17:08 If you're an LSU fan, you suck up the fact
00:17:10 that you're hiring Brian Kelly, who's not likable,
00:17:13 to basically be like, we're gonna win a national title.
00:17:15 But you did win a national title with Coach O,
00:17:17 so it's like, fuck.
00:17:18 - Yeah, and they won one with Les Miles, who was likable.
00:17:21 - Yeah, so they're saving somehow.
00:17:22 - There's a reason why Les Miles stuck around
00:17:24 year after year of just the most,
00:17:26 like the hugest brain farts ever
00:17:28 at the end of multiple games per season.
00:17:30 And that was because they liked him down there.
00:17:32 - Yeah.
00:17:33 - They stayed in Louisiana, liked Les Miles.
00:17:34 - I'm still rooting for LSU in spite of Brian Kelly.
00:17:37 - That's how much we like LSU.
00:17:38 - Yes, yes, but Florida State was incredible.
00:17:41 That turnaround's been awesome.
00:17:42 Keon Coleman, who I did have to tweet out Tuck Cummins
00:17:47 'cause that's tough.
00:17:48 He transferred from Michigan State.
00:17:50 He looked incredible, three touchdowns, high point King.
00:17:54 He was just high pointing the ball
00:17:55 all over LSU's cornerbacks.
00:17:57 And then his mom afterwards
00:17:59 had one of my favorite quotes ever.
00:18:00 So Ross Dellinger wrote about this in Yahoo.
00:18:03 Keon Coleman's mom said, 'cause he's from Louisiana.
00:18:07 He's from not too far from Baton Rouge.
00:18:09 - He wasn't even offered.
00:18:10 - Wasn't offered, wanted to play basketball and football.
00:18:13 And his mom said after, "Oh, it was good,
00:18:16 "especially against LSU.
00:18:18 "God is blessing him.
00:18:19 "God says to make your enemies your footstool."
00:18:22 He did it.
00:18:23 - Yeah.
00:18:24 - You heard that?
00:18:24 I never heard God say that.
00:18:26 - I had that note, he did.
00:18:27 - Yeah, he did.
00:18:28 - It's actually in the Bible.
00:18:29 - God is no different than like hazing at Sigma Chi.
00:18:32 God said, "Make your enemies your footstool."
00:18:34 - God says, "They hate us 'cause they ain't us."
00:18:36 - Yeah, yeah.
00:18:37 I just like, I might get that as a tattoo.
00:18:39 God said, "Make your enemies your footstool."
00:18:41 - There's a lot of parts of the Bible
00:18:42 that we don't hear about that much,
00:18:44 that they just don't teach you.
00:18:46 - No, I missed that one, but I mean, it's a great quote.
00:18:48 - I'm gonna look up the--
00:18:49 - And shout out God for saying that.
00:18:50 Like that's fucking--
00:18:51 - No respect.
00:18:52 - God had, I mean, I didn't even know
00:18:54 they had that type of furniture back then.
00:18:55 - He's the original top G.
00:18:57 - God said, "Go to West Elm,
00:18:59 "get a fucking footstool of your enemies."
00:19:00 - Psalm 110, verse one, "The Lord says to my Lord,
00:19:05 "sit at my right hand until I make your enemies
00:19:08 "a footstool for your feet."
00:19:09 - Bang.
00:19:10 - That's a bar.
00:19:11 - Let's go, let's go.
00:19:12 So yeah, Florida State though looks for real.
00:19:15 And Jordan Travis is very, very good.
00:19:18 All right, other, so we started with talking
00:19:20 about the Pac-12.
00:19:21 The Pac-12 on Friday, officially, officially is dead
00:19:25 because Stanford and Cal and SMU are joining the ACC,
00:19:30 which is basically like these three schools
00:19:33 were like, "We need a home so badly."
00:19:36 They're taking way less money.
00:19:38 I think SMU is not taking any TV dollars
00:19:41 for the first nine years.
00:19:43 And Cal and Stanford are taking like half TV dollars
00:19:46 for the first like seven or eight years.
00:19:48 They basically just like, "We need a home."
00:19:49 And even SMU, there was a quote that SMU was picked
00:19:53 because for Olympic sports, they'll meet in the middle
00:19:58 and compete in, so SMU is literally like,
00:20:01 "Okay, well, we found a place that they can just like
00:20:04 "split it halfway."
00:20:05 - They're gonna compete in Dallas?
00:20:06 - Yeah, they're gonna do like swimming in Dallas.
00:20:09 Yeah, so, you know, it's not this through.
00:20:12 - There are a lot of sports that Stanford is really good at
00:20:15 that don't include basketball and football.
00:20:17 - They win that cup, whatever the fuck it's called.
00:20:19 I don't know what cup.
00:20:20 - There's like a Champions Cup.
00:20:22 - Capital One, I think.
00:20:23 - Yeah, the dumbest thing ever where it's like,
00:20:25 it's how many sports you win in national title.
00:20:27 - Oh, yeah, yeah, that one.
00:20:28 - If you have cross country.
00:20:29 - They're like the best athletic school in the country
00:20:31 in sports that nobody really pays that close attention to.
00:20:33 - Correct.
00:20:34 - And it's funny 'cause they're joining the ACC.
00:20:36 I think we first speculated on that a few weeks ago
00:20:39 and how ridiculous that would be to have
00:20:40 like the Ocean Conference,
00:20:42 where it's just the Coastal Conference meeting each other.
00:20:44 And then I was looking at a map and I was like,
00:20:46 you know, oceans don't have boundaries.
00:20:48 Like it's all one body of water.
00:20:49 - That's true.
00:20:50 - It's all one water.
00:20:51 - They're touching each other.
00:20:52 - They're touching each other.
00:20:52 Who's to say what's Atlantic, what's Pacific?
00:20:55 It's all the same ocean.
00:20:56 - Except SMU, who's just there in the middle.
00:20:58 - They're just there in the middle for swimming.
00:20:59 - For everyone to get there and compete.
00:21:01 But the--
00:21:02 - I'm looking forward, so if you look up the stats,
00:21:04 women's soccer, UNC, Stanford.
00:21:06 - Yes.
00:21:07 - Two best programs in the history of college sports.
00:21:09 - It's gonna be great.
00:21:10 Who said conference realignment was bad?
00:21:11 - Rivalry's back on.
00:21:12 - Yeah, the only other wrinkle
00:21:15 that I'm just hoping this happens.
00:21:16 So Oregon State and Washington State are now screwed.
00:21:19 They're totally left out.
00:21:21 There is a rule in NCAA where you have to have
00:21:25 at least eight members of your conference
00:21:27 to continue being a conference,
00:21:29 but you get a two year grace period
00:21:31 to try to figure it out.
00:21:32 They need to just do the Pac-2 next year.
00:21:34 - Yeah.
00:21:35 - It would fucking rule.
00:21:36 So that--
00:21:37 - In like North Division and South Division?
00:21:39 (laughing)
00:21:41 - They have to do this.
00:21:42 They have to keep the Pac-2 alive for at least one year.
00:21:45 - And they should have a championship game.
00:21:46 - Yeah.
00:21:47 - They should have a conference championship.
00:21:48 - Yeah, they should just play a round robin
00:21:49 at the end of like November.
00:21:51 - Do you get an automatic bowl qualification
00:21:53 if you win your conference?
00:21:54 - Sure.
00:21:55 - That's great, yeah.
00:21:56 - I don't think so, but yeah, maybe.
00:21:57 - If you win your conference championship, you should.
00:21:58 - I think you still have to be,
00:22:00 well, no, now they make bowls,
00:22:02 like five and seven get a bowl.
00:22:03 - Some of them do, yeah.
00:22:04 - Yeah.
00:22:05 - Unless you transferred into Division I
00:22:07 in the last two years, then you're not allowed to.
00:22:09 - But we need that.
00:22:10 We need that.
00:22:10 All right, other big stories.
00:22:12 I have a horniest dudes, if you can make a decision on this,
00:22:17 horniest dudes that we saw on Saturday.
00:22:19 Urban Meyer getting caught hitting on a co-ed at halftime
00:22:24 right before he was supposed to go live.
00:22:27 We have Hugh Freeze getting himself back in the mix
00:22:30 right away, wins one game against UMass
00:22:33 and starts replying to women on Twitter,
00:22:36 being like, "Come on, it's War Eagle all the time."
00:22:38 When I think some reporter, Madison Gilbert,
00:22:41 said like, "Who should I root for, LSU or Florida State?"
00:22:43 And he's like, "Why not Auburn?"
00:22:45 - Mm-hmm, just get in the mix.
00:22:46 - That wasn't the question, Hugh.
00:22:48 And then we have South Carolina Shane Beamer.
00:22:52 He somehow didn't blame himself whatsoever
00:22:56 to the point that he blamed the Chain Gang
00:23:00 for eating a hot dog at halftime
00:23:02 and not being set for their onside kick,
00:23:04 which they did recover.
00:23:05 - So I heard that that was some sort of tradition,
00:23:08 where they eat hot dogs at halftime there.
00:23:10 - I don't know, Shane Beamer,
00:23:10 all I know is in a horny world,
00:23:12 Shane Beamer was just watching another dude
00:23:15 angrily eat a hot dog.
00:23:16 - Yeah, and then blame them.
00:23:17 - Yeah, and then the last one is myself and Quiggs
00:23:22 for Sam Pittman's tits.
00:23:24 I don't know if you guys saw.
00:23:25 - I didn't see Sam Pittman's tits.
00:23:26 - I'll text you right now.
00:23:27 - Okay.
00:23:27 - It's-- - Yeah, they're popping?
00:23:29 - More than popping, PFT.
00:23:31 - He's got a great set.
00:23:32 - I think Quiggs said, "Sam Pittman's tits got me barking."
00:23:37 And I was like, "Yeah, you're right, dude.
00:23:39 They are, it's, I'm a little worried.
00:23:42 Like, they're so big that I might,
00:23:45 I don't know what's going on.
00:23:46 We are Sam Pittman guys, but here,
00:23:49 I just texted the group text.
00:23:50 Zoom in on Sam Pittman's tits.
00:23:52 He's with the Huckabees too,
00:23:54 so you'd think that he wouldn't have the biggest tits.
00:23:56 - Let's see.
00:23:57 - He's got some tits, yeah.
00:24:00 - Oh, wow.
00:24:00 - He's got a rack, dude.
00:24:01 Like, he's stacked.
00:24:03 - Look at that mincey build.
00:24:04 - You think he wears a bra?
00:24:06 - I don't know, but--
00:24:07 - 'Cause I can't see any nipples, I just see tits.
00:24:08 - I saw him and I zoomed in, I was like,
00:24:09 "Wait, am I horny for Sam Pittman's tits?
00:24:12 I think I am."
00:24:13 - Mike Huckabee looks old.
00:24:15 - Those tits though, dude.
00:24:16 - Huckabee looks like a mix of old Mike Huckabee
00:24:20 and Kenny Rogers.
00:24:21 - Yeah, those are, so who's horniest dude?
00:24:24 - I'm gonna go with Urban.
00:24:27 Lifetime Achievement Award in being horny
00:24:29 goes to Urban Meyer.
00:24:31 He was just chatter up, he was risener up.
00:24:33 - I do like Hugh Freeze just being like,
00:24:35 "Now that I'm back, I'm all the way back."
00:24:37 - "Now that I'm not at Liberty anymore,
00:24:39 I am at Liberty to be horny as hell."
00:24:41 - You know Hugh Freeze is feeling himself.
00:24:43 He's like, "Oh, this is good.
00:24:45 I got my swagger back."
00:24:46 - He's in a hospital bed for priaprism,
00:24:48 just give him the thumbs up.
00:24:49 Four hours ain't shit.
00:24:50 - All right, other things I wrote down.
00:24:53 Oh, Iowa, first opening touchdown,
00:24:56 opening drive touchdown pass to start the season since 1991.
00:25:02 - That's pretty impressive.
00:25:02 - That's insane.
00:25:03 - Let's go.
00:25:04 - They scored a touchdown on their first two drives,
00:25:06 then they just went back to Iowa offense.
00:25:08 And for people who don't know,
00:25:10 one of the best storylines this year is Brian Ferencz,
00:25:14 the son of Kirk, their head coach.
00:25:17 He's the offensive coordinator.
00:25:18 (door slams)
00:25:19 Max just dropped everything.
00:25:21 And in his contract, Iowa has to win seven games this year,
00:25:26 and they have to average 25 points a game.
00:25:30 Can be defensive too.
00:25:32 And if he doesn't do that, he loses his job.
00:25:34 So it's basically, they scored 24 this week.
00:25:38 So that's tough.
00:25:39 When you need that first week of the season,
00:25:43 you need to put up some points to pad the stats.
00:25:47 But it's a great storyline to watch,
00:25:49 like to have that type of, he's on memes, he's on a pip.
00:25:52 - Yeah, he's offensive explosion at Iowa.
00:25:55 I have a fuckhead of the week.
00:25:57 There are no nominees, there's just one person.
00:26:01 Thomas Franelli.
00:26:02 Recurring guest, a part of my take.
00:26:04 He came on, gave his week preview, week one preview.
00:26:08 And he gave a game of the year, right?
00:26:10 He said he wanted to make it a game of the year.
00:26:11 - He didn't go all the way to game of the year.
00:26:13 - He gave Texas Tech to womp Wyoming.
00:26:17 He said, "I bought it at 10, I bought it at 11,
00:26:20 "I'm buying it at 14, I'll buy it up to 20 if I have to."
00:26:23 They go to Laramie, and they lose, and they lose,
00:26:27 and they lost, and it was bad.
00:26:28 And it was a bad game, it was a bad call.
00:26:30 Now Tom does have a no tap apology.
00:26:33 To his credit, if nothing, he's a man with integrity.
00:26:36 The title of the no tap was just, "I'm sorry."
00:26:39 I would like to issue an apology to the Big Cat,
00:26:42 PFT, Max, Jake, and the AWL for saying game of the year
00:26:46 in relation to Texas Tech minus 14 during my appearance
00:26:49 on part of my take.
00:26:50 - Lost that, right?
00:26:51 - He didn't mention Hank.
00:26:52 - Oh yeah.
00:26:53 - Interesting.
00:26:54 - Well, it was the same person.
00:26:55 - This is totally on me, and I accept responsibility.
00:26:57 I also acknowledge that Texas Tech had a 17 to nothing lead
00:27:00 and totally blew it, so it's really their fault.
00:27:02 But this is on me, I accept my four day suspension.
00:27:05 It was, I believe I said that it was
00:27:09 an all Italians suspension.
00:27:11 - Yeah.
00:27:12 - We're banning Italians from part of my take
00:27:13 for four days beginning Saturday.
00:27:16 - Yeah.
00:27:17 - So starting on Wednesday, we can have Italians back
00:27:20 on the show if we have to.
00:27:21 - Yes, I banned him for Monday's episode.
00:27:24 - He can't listen.
00:27:25 - He couldn't listen to Monday's episode, the lost tapes.
00:27:28 The only thing that makes me feel better is that
00:27:32 it is Tom's job, and he went, I think,
00:27:34 one and 11 on Saturday.
00:27:37 So it made me feel a little better that he,
00:27:40 you know, like if he, there's nothing worse
00:27:42 than someone giving you a pick, it losing,
00:27:45 and they'd be like, whoa, dude, I went like 10 and two.
00:27:47 What are you talking about?
00:27:48 But Tom also, like I do believe in Tom.
00:27:51 I trust the process.
00:27:53 He's going to have a good season.
00:27:55 He even went out tonight and he gave out a pick,
00:27:57 Clemson over 34 and a half team total,
00:28:00 and the score right now is Duke 21, Clemson seven.
00:28:04 - Well, it's only like the first quarter, right?
00:28:06 - No, there's 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
00:28:09 - Oh shit.
00:28:09 - Fuck.
00:28:10 - All right, so what's our plan?
00:28:13 Because it's very rare that you get an opportunity
00:28:15 to either tail somebody entirely,
00:28:17 and put the pendulum in swings.
00:28:18 Are we going to fade all of his picks next week?
00:28:20 - No, you have to tail him.
00:28:21 Listen, I got my teeth kicked in on Saturday.
00:28:25 It was like, I actually had a moment
00:28:28 that I'm not very proud of because I told my wife,
00:28:31 I was like, I'm not in football shape.
00:28:32 And she was like, what do you mean?
00:28:34 And I was like, my eyes just hurt so bad
00:28:36 from watching all this football today.
00:28:39 And I lost so many bets.
00:28:40 I got to get back in football shape.
00:28:41 And she was like, what are you talking about?
00:28:43 So I feel the pain that Tom felt in a different way.
00:28:46 I had different picks, but they all lost as well.
00:28:48 I think you got to follow him next week.
00:28:51 You got to tail.
00:28:52 - I actually kind of agree with that
00:28:53 because it's going to be a lot of fun if I tail him
00:28:56 and then he goes like, oh, and 13 again.
00:28:58 - Right, you can't, he will correct.
00:29:01 He will correct.
00:29:01 - Tom's good.
00:29:02 - It's time to hop on.
00:29:04 And it's also just like that.
00:29:05 That's how gambling works.
00:29:06 - It's week one for bloggers too.
00:29:08 - Also shout out all the people who,
00:29:10 for the three years that Penn owned us,
00:29:12 claimed that I lost on purpose
00:29:14 so that people would lose money.
00:29:15 One week into the college football season,
00:29:18 I think I'm down 15 units.
00:29:20 So, ha ha, gotcha.
00:29:23 Looks like I'm just a bad gambler.
00:29:25 It wasn't a bit.
00:29:27 It would have been great though,
00:29:28 if I went scorching hot and everyone was like,
00:29:30 dude, you were doing that as a bit.
00:29:32 You were losing money as a bit.
00:29:34 No, I lose money every Saturday and Sunday
00:29:37 as probably my favorite hobby.
00:29:40 - Yeah, I mean, it was--
00:29:41 - It's my favorite hobby.
00:29:42 - Listen, I've never had so much fun losing money
00:29:45 as I did on Saturday.
00:29:46 It's mostly due to Tom.
00:29:47 I did go nuclear on that play,
00:29:50 but overall it's hard to win in week one.
00:29:52 You haven't seen anything yet.
00:29:53 You got nothing, but you know what?
00:29:54 I blame the media.
00:29:55 I blame the media for losing almost every bet week one
00:29:58 because I listened to their advice
00:30:00 and their off-season takes.
00:30:01 - And also, shout out, my whole day was just trash.
00:30:04 I watched games start to finish
00:30:06 from starting at 11 a.m. all the way til the night games
00:30:11 and the Penn State James Franklin
00:30:14 still running his offense at the end of the game
00:30:16 to cover against West Virginia.
00:30:17 - He knows.
00:30:18 - I smiled.
00:30:19 I was like, this is why I do it
00:30:20 as I counted how much money I lost that day,
00:30:23 but I was like, but I won that one.
00:30:24 - He knows.
00:30:25 That's the thing.
00:30:26 It's not against the law if you're a coach
00:30:27 to have in the back of your mind
00:30:29 the understanding that your alumni
00:30:31 are betting on you to cover the spread
00:30:33 and then you keep your offense on the field
00:30:34 to cover the spread.
00:30:35 You're not betting on it,
00:30:36 but you are establishing an enormous amount of job security
00:30:40 if they can trust that you'll push them over the edge
00:30:42 whenever they back you.
00:30:43 - Yes, Drew Lair is very, very good.
00:30:45 Max, Max is back, by the way.
00:30:47 We'll talk to Matt.
00:30:48 Let's save the Mount Rushmore talk
00:30:51 and vacation talk for after Field Yates,
00:30:53 but Drew Lair is awesome.
00:30:55 - Yeah, best quarterback, Penn State quarterback,
00:30:59 I think I've seen in my lifetime.
00:31:00 - Whoa. - Whoa.
00:31:01 - Ho.
00:31:02 - Christian Mettenberger.
00:31:03 - Okay.
00:31:04 (laughing)
00:31:05 Todd Blackledge.
00:31:06 - Christian Hackenberg, was he a second round pick?
00:31:10 - I think so.
00:31:13 - To the Jets?
00:31:14 - That's insane.
00:31:14 - I mean, he was prototypical Big 10,
00:31:18 big, tall, strong arm guy.
00:31:19 - That is insane that he was a second round pick.
00:31:22 - Well, he was supposed to be the next Peyton Manning.
00:31:24 - He stayed a year too long,
00:31:26 or I don't know if he could have even left.
00:31:27 - No, but I think it was.
00:31:29 - I remember him having all the hype
00:31:31 and then him staying and be like, whoa, what is this?
00:31:34 - Did he ever play?
00:31:35 Did he take a snap in the NFL?
00:31:37 - I think he did for the Jets, right?
00:31:39 - I don't think he did.
00:31:40 - Yeah, second round pick, 51st overall.
00:31:43 - Yeah, he started, oh no, he didn't play.
00:31:46 - His middle name--
00:31:47 - He started three games in the AAF in 2019.
00:31:49 - His middle name is Blaze.
00:31:51 - Oh, that's fucking--
00:31:51 - That is sick.
00:31:52 - That's worth a second round pick right there.
00:31:54 - Yeah, Drew Aller better.
00:31:55 - Gotta take a shot.
00:31:56 - Oh, Drew Aller's awesome.
00:31:58 Yeah, it doesn't look like he played.
00:32:00 Jets.
00:32:02 That's funny memes.
00:32:05 All right, yeah, other things.
00:32:08 I don't wanna root for, all right, Hank,
00:32:13 you're doing your bar Big 10 thing, right?
00:32:17 So you're gonna go to a different Chicago bar
00:32:18 for a Big 10 team starting at some point.
00:32:21 - Probably this weekend.
00:32:22 - Okay, I wanna just throw this out there.
00:32:25 I know you probably don't care about it.
00:32:27 Indiana, I didn't know this till today or yesterday.
00:32:32 Indiana has a McMahon on their team.
00:32:35 Shane McMahon's son is on Indiana.
00:32:38 He's, what are you doing, Jake?
00:32:39 - Jake wanted my laptop charger for some reason.
00:32:41 - Okay, Indiana has a McMahon on the team
00:32:44 and Shane McMahon gifted Indiana a takeaway belt,
00:32:48 like a real wrestling belt.
00:32:50 So that has to help a little bit.
00:32:52 They're not good, but having a McMahon makes them awesome.
00:32:56 And I saw, like, there was a picture,
00:32:58 some fan took a picture of Shane walking into the stadium
00:33:01 in like Indiana gear and I was like,
00:33:03 I fucking kinda like Indiana now.
00:33:04 That's how much I love Shane O'Mac.
00:33:06 - It'd be very funny if Hank moved all the way here
00:33:08 from New Jersey and just picked Rutgers.
00:33:10 - Oh, they looked good.
00:33:12 - They did, well, they beat my Wildcats.
00:33:15 I was heartbroken.
00:33:16 - It was weird, I didn't,
00:33:17 did you tweet about the Wildcats at all?
00:33:20 - No, I frankly, I think that what happened
00:33:22 with our football team this last season was disgusting.
00:33:24 - Okay, 'cause--
00:33:25 - And so I don't enjoy talking about,
00:33:27 the only time I'll talk about my Northwestern Wildcats
00:33:30 will be to admonish them,
00:33:31 admonish the entire football team.
00:33:33 - 'Cause I noticed you hadn't tweeted about 'em,
00:33:35 so I was like, oh, he and Ravel must have done
00:33:37 a vow of silence on Sunday.
00:33:39 - Oh, see-- - And Ravel also
00:33:39 did not tweet about them.
00:33:41 - That's what we do. - Very weird.
00:33:42 - That's what we do. - Very weird.
00:33:43 - We're boycotting it, yeah.
00:33:45 - Isn't that interesting?
00:33:47 - It is interesting. - Isn't that interesting?
00:33:48 - I'm on the group chat right now.
00:33:49 It's me, Ravel, Mike Wilbon, and Greeny.
00:33:52 And Greeny's got his hands full right now.
00:33:55 He's got Ankh walking into the studio.
00:33:57 He's got a whole thing going on in the seaport.
00:33:59 So Greeny's, he's focused on the Jets.
00:34:01 That's what we're saying right now.
00:34:03 Greeny's in NFL mode.
00:34:04 - Yeah, all right, other things.
00:34:06 I mean, I really am, I do think the Pac-12
00:34:08 like won the weekend, 'cause Washington looked awesome.
00:34:12 Oregon put up a fucking billion against Portland State.
00:34:16 DJ Angoulilay looks good.
00:34:18 He had like 20 seconds on every pass,
00:34:22 but he still looked good.
00:34:23 - You know Clemson's offense could use somebody like that.
00:34:25 - Yeah, they could.
00:34:26 Clemson, Dabo, Hotzi, I'm saying it.
00:34:29 - Well, okay, so I would toss Dabo
00:34:32 into the conversation of least likable
00:34:34 college football coaches.
00:34:34 - Oh yes, that's right, we did miss him.
00:34:37 Yeah, we went sideways when you said Cosby.
00:34:38 - Yeah, that's true. - 'Cause then I was like,
00:34:40 wait, Brian Kelly, Urban Meyer, Cosby.
00:34:43 - Yeah, Cosby would, I mean, if he coached Temple.
00:34:45 (laughing)
00:34:47 It would be a discussion.
00:34:49 And then last thing, Georgia memes,
00:34:52 would you like to disavow?
00:34:54 - Oh, the driving?
00:34:56 - Yeah, so Georgia had a staffer, Jarvis Jones,
00:35:00 got a speeding ticket, and that is their 15th
00:35:05 speeding or reckless driving charge
00:35:08 since the terrible tragedy that happened in January.
00:35:11 15, that's pretty insane.
00:35:14 - Well, he got arrested.
00:35:15 - Yeah, but that's pretty insane.
00:35:16 - Yeah, yeah, it wasn't just a ticket, he got arrested.
00:35:18 - I'm like 15.
00:35:20 - After an accident.
00:35:22 - Kirby Smart denied that there was a problem in March,
00:35:25 and then in July was like, yeah, there's a problem.
00:35:28 We have way too many speedings.
00:35:29 - It's SEC speed, baby.
00:35:31 - Yeah, so memes?
00:35:33 - Yeah, they gotta do driver's hit.
00:35:36 - Okay, can they put something in everyone's car
00:35:40 that it can't go, just give golf carts a set one.
00:35:42 - Golf carts, yeah, golf carts is the move.
00:35:43 - Or mopeds.
00:35:45 - Mopeds don't go fast like 45.
00:35:46 - Roller blades.
00:35:48 You should have the defense just
00:35:49 getting around campus on blades.
00:35:50 - Bikes, yeah, okay, it was fun though.
00:35:53 College football's back, it was very, very fun to watch.
00:35:56 Also, Mizzou's head coach, oh, he could have been
00:35:58 in Horniest as well because he was talking about
00:36:01 one of his players, and he was like,
00:36:04 "When my daughter becomes of age,
00:36:06 "I would love for her to date him."
00:36:08 - Yeah, it's always a weird thing to say.
00:36:10 - What, dude?
00:36:11 - You remember, it was, I wanna say
00:36:12 the national championship where it was
00:36:14 Florida and Oklahoma, and maybe it was
00:36:18 Herbstreet or Fowler, whoever was calling that game,
00:36:21 just went on a diatribe about how much you would,
00:36:24 you want your daughter to date a guy like Tim Tebow.
00:36:26 - Yeah.
00:36:27 - Which, you can kinda understand that
00:36:28 'cause he's not gonna have sex with her.
00:36:30 - But yeah, very weird to just say,
00:36:32 oh yeah, my underage daughter, I can't wait
00:36:34 'til she turns 18 and then maybe she'll date him.
00:36:37 - Yeah, very strange.
00:36:38 - That's the highest compliment you can give a guy, I guess?
00:36:41 - I guess so.
00:36:41 - But I don't really understand it.
00:36:42 - It's also kind of a diss.
00:36:45 - Yeah.
00:36:45 - If he goes like, "Oh, you're not a threat."
00:36:46 - Yeah, yeah, it is, yeah, you're a nice guy.
00:36:49 - Yeah.
00:36:50 - Yeah.
00:36:51 Did you, okay, so yeah, I think that's it.
00:36:53 I think that's, we got some who's back
00:36:56 that we're gonna do, and then we have field dates, what?
00:36:57 - We needed that same faces, different places
00:37:00 PowerPoint for college football.
00:37:01 - I mean, it's insane, the amount of transfers.
00:37:05 - Emory Jones, Cincinnati.
00:37:07 - Yeah.
00:37:07 - Yeah, JT Daniels, Rice.
00:37:09 - Ketan Slobis on BYU, yep.
00:37:12 - How many schools has J, is this JT Daniels' fourth school?
00:37:15 - He's played in every school in FBS.
00:37:18 - Good for him.
00:37:19 - Yeah, and Ketan Slobis, who's a recurring guest,
00:37:21 also has played in a lot of schools.
00:37:22 He was at West Virginia last year?
00:37:24 No, he was at Pitt?
00:37:25 He was at Pitt.
00:37:26 No, JT Daniels was at West Virginia.
00:37:28 - Yeah.
00:37:29 - And now he's on Rice.
00:37:30 - Yep.
00:37:31 - Yeah.
00:37:32 - Crazy.
00:37:33 - It is, the transfer portal does get a little confusing.
00:37:35 - Yeah.
00:37:36 - With all these names.
00:37:37 Okay.
00:37:38 - Do you wanna do a moment of silence for Jimmy Buffett?
00:37:40 - Yeah, that was sad.
00:37:41 - He's a legend, very sad news.
00:37:42 - That was sad.
00:37:43 - Friday night, old J Buff passed away.
00:37:46 - He did go out at the end of summer.
00:37:48 - He did.
00:37:48 - Kind of fitting.
00:37:49 - He did, but.
00:37:50 - Although we talked about this,
00:37:51 dying right before football season's the worst.
00:37:53 - If I died the week before football season started,
00:37:55 like, dude from Smash Mouth has gotta be just
00:37:57 turning over right now.
00:37:58 - Jimmy Buffett's on Nebraska, Minnesota.
00:38:01 - That's, that's awful.
00:38:02 But, maybe Saints, team of destiny.
00:38:05 Jimmy Buffett, huge Saints fan.
00:38:07 He's on the sidelines for like,
00:38:09 all their home games every year.
00:38:10 - True.
00:38:11 - Jameis Winston put out a fire tweet,
00:38:12 just like, RIP King of him and Jimmy.
00:38:15 Jimmy Buffett was just an all time good dude.
00:38:17 - Yeah, he was a dude's rock dude.
00:38:19 - He made.
00:38:20 - Vacation king.
00:38:21 - He made billions of dollars off just having fun,
00:38:23 and just like, telling people,
00:38:24 "Hey, I like to have fun and drink."
00:38:26 - And the best part is, he was like a workaholic.
00:38:29 - Yeah, but he worked hard.
00:38:31 He worked so hard.
00:38:32 - But he loved what he did, yeah.
00:38:32 - He worked so hard at vacationing.
00:38:34 - Right.
00:38:35 - I would like to see that out of Hank.
00:38:36 - Yeah.
00:38:37 - Right now, you kinda go on vacation,
00:38:38 you take a vacation from your vacation while you're on it.
00:38:40 Jimmy Buffett's also one of those guys,
00:38:43 you can't put on one of his songs and not be in a good mood.
00:38:45 - No, it's impossible.
00:38:46 - Like, the minute it hits, you're like,
00:38:48 "Man, that's fun, I wanna drink."
00:38:50 - I tweeted out this story about Jimmy Buffett,
00:38:52 which I learned this last summer.
00:38:54 I was in Jamaica for a wedding.
00:38:55 I think you'll appreciate it.
00:38:56 It's a crazy, like, it's the ultimate Jimmy Buffett story.
00:39:00 He was flying, he was a pilot, right?
00:39:02 So he was flying his little plane around through Jamaica,
00:39:06 and he had Bono on the plane with him.
00:39:07 And he was like, "Hey, Bono,
00:39:08 "I know this great jerk chicken shack
00:39:10 "that we gotta stop by, it's right off the bay,
00:39:13 "right off Montego Bay."
00:39:14 So Jimmy Buffett lands his plane in the bay
00:39:18 so that they can get out and get some chicken.
00:39:20 As they're landing, the Jamaican military
00:39:23 opens fire on his plane and tries to shoot him down
00:39:26 with automatic rifles and shit.
00:39:28 He lands the plane, there's bullet holes everywhere in it,
00:39:30 and they all hit the deck.
00:39:32 They get boarded by the Jamaican military,
00:39:34 and they get on the plane and they're like,
00:39:36 "Oh fuck, we just shot at Jimmy Buffett and Bono."
00:39:40 And so they were apologizing so hard,
00:39:42 they were afraid that they were gonna all lose their jobs,
00:39:44 probably go to jail.
00:39:45 And Jimmy was like, "You know what?
00:39:46 "I've gotten away with a lot of dumb, illegal shit
00:39:49 "that I've done in my life.
00:39:50 "This is just kind of like a little bit of karma.
00:39:52 "It's probably good if I don't go at them for this.
00:39:55 "I'm just gonna write a song about it."
00:39:57 And he wrote a song called "Jamaica Mistake-a."
00:39:59 - Love it.
00:40:00 - And it was a fucking smash hit.
00:40:01 - Perfect.
00:40:01 - And he just went on with his life.
00:40:03 And then everybody from that point on in Jamaica,
00:40:05 like, "Oh, Jimmy's back in town.
00:40:07 "Let's make sure we treat him right
00:40:08 "and not try to shoot his plane out of the sky."
00:40:09 - Jamaica Mistake-a, it rhymes.
00:40:11 - Yeah, it does.
00:40:12 It's also crazy to think that back then,
00:40:14 people would try to shoot your plane down
00:40:16 if you thought you had weed on it.
00:40:17 - Yeah, I know.
00:40:19 Especially going to Jamaica.
00:40:20 - Yeah.
00:40:21 - What the fuck?
00:40:21 - Wild.
00:40:22 - Yeah, Jimmy Buffett though, all time guy.
00:40:24 - Yep.
00:40:25 - All time dudes rock guy.
00:40:26 - Yes.
00:40:27 - Like just a king of vacation, of good times,
00:40:30 of just feeling good.
00:40:32 Like when you, like I said, when you hear the song,
00:40:34 you're just like, I was at the Cubs game,
00:40:35 and he did this, he did,
00:40:37 they replayed his seventh inning stretch,
00:40:40 which was a nice tribute,
00:40:41 but they were playing Jimmy Buffett throughout the game.
00:40:43 And five o'clock somewhere, like came on,
00:40:45 I was just like, I was with my son,
00:40:47 I was like, "I wanna get fucking blacked out right now."
00:40:49 - Yeah.
00:40:50 - Like I wanna drink.
00:40:51 - It's fantastic stuff.
00:40:52 So had a great time at his Margaritaville Times Square Resort.
00:40:56 Went with Donnie about a year and a half ago.
00:40:58 And I know they just shut it down,
00:41:00 but if you're listening to me,
00:41:01 if anybody knows where the giant,
00:41:03 like 30, 40 foot Statue of Liberty
00:41:06 that they had inside in the foyer,
00:41:08 that had, it had a margarita glass instead of the torch,
00:41:12 with sharks swimming around in it.
00:41:14 If anybody knows where that is,
00:41:15 I'd be very interested in purchasing it.
00:41:16 - Yeah, we'll put it in the new office.
00:41:17 - Put it in the new office.
00:41:18 - We have more than enough space.
00:41:19 - I can't imagine there's a big market out there for that,
00:41:21 but I wanna throw my name in that.
00:41:23 - Yes, absolutely.
00:41:24 I will help fund that.
00:41:25 We will absolutely buy that.
00:41:26 - Yeah.
00:41:27 - No question.
00:41:28 Okay, let's do who's back,

00:42:39 And here's our direct takes, overly direct takes
00:42:43 presented by DIRECTV.
00:42:44 Who's back of the week, Hank?
00:42:46 - Who's back of the week is diarrhea.
00:42:48 - Oh yeah. - Oh, okay, yeah.
00:42:49 - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - Good.
00:42:50 There was a Delta flight this weekend
00:42:52 going from Atlanta to Barcelona,
00:42:54 and it had to turn around because someone had to, quote,
00:42:57 "diarrhea all the way through the plane,"
00:43:01 which I don't even really understand.
00:43:03 - No, I think it's shit everywhere.
00:43:05 - Like it was just leaking down the aisles?
00:43:06 - Yeah, no, there's shit everywhere.
00:43:07 - I think you're going to the bathroom
00:43:09 and it's falling out of your pants.
00:43:10 - I think it's shit on people.
00:43:12 I think it's shit on things.
00:43:13 I think it's shit everywhere.
00:43:14 - Just coming out of the ceiling?
00:43:15 - Did you hear the call?
00:43:17 - No. - It was great.
00:43:17 Oh, I gotta try to find it.
00:43:18 - It's like when you rob a bank
00:43:20 and they put the dye pack in there
00:43:21 and the purple explodes all over the money.
00:43:22 That's the inside of the plane, but brown.
00:43:24 - Yeah, and it was a biohazard?
00:43:26 - It was a biohazard, yeah.
00:43:27 - Which makes me feel like next time I diarrhea,
00:43:30 I'm just gonna be like, "Yeah, that's a biohazard.
00:43:32 "Watch out."
00:43:32 - I saw our good friend Scott Van Pelt tweeted out
00:43:34 that which would you rather be on a plane
00:43:37 with, the You're Not Real Girl
00:43:39 or the one that has explosive diarrhea?
00:43:41 - I mean, You're Not Real Girl.
00:43:42 - It's the You're Not Real Girl.
00:43:43 - It's so fucking hot.
00:43:44 - If the You're Not Real Girl
00:43:45 had had explosive diarrhea on a plane,
00:43:47 they'd be able to sell those plane seats
00:43:49 for thousands of dollars.
00:43:50 - Please also, it's Tiffany Gomez, our queen.
00:43:52 - Yes.
00:43:53 - Let's put her name.
00:43:55 Put some respect on it.
00:43:56 - Come on the pod to discuss Tiffany.
00:43:56 - Can't wait for this person to reveal themself.
00:43:59 - I don't think they ever will.
00:44:00 - Actually, Jake, you should do a video
00:44:02 like the Tiffany Gomez video.
00:44:04 Get all dolled up and make up
00:44:05 like part of my cheesesteak shoot
00:44:07 and just be like, "I'm just here to say
00:44:09 "that what I've gone through over the past week
00:44:12 "has been hell.
00:44:13 "Stop online bullying." - It wasn't part
00:44:14 of my cheesesteak.
00:44:15 - Yeah, it was not.
00:44:16 - All right, here's a call that's so good.
00:44:18 Hold on, this is the official call
00:44:20 when they had to call back to the airport.
00:44:23 - Negative, it's just a biohazard issue.
00:44:25 I believe we had a passenger who had diarrhea
00:44:27 all the way through the airplane.
00:44:28 (laughing)
00:44:30 - All the way through.
00:44:34 - All the way, no, I think he just,
00:44:36 I think he probably was wearing shorts,
00:44:38 maybe no underwear.
00:44:39 It's hot out, it's summer,
00:44:41 and it was just diarrhea leaking everywhere.
00:44:42 - Maybe went to Magic City,
00:44:44 maybe got the lemon pepper wings.
00:44:45 - Video evidence of this.
00:44:47 Anytime anything crazy happens in a plane,
00:44:49 there's video evidence.
00:44:50 - I don't know, dude.
00:44:51 - Good question, Jake.
00:44:52 - But if someone's running up with diarrhea,
00:44:53 I don't think, I think you're like,
00:44:55 holy shit, get out of the way,
00:44:56 he's gonna have diarrhea on me,
00:44:57 not holy shit, I need my phone.
00:44:59 - If it was riding down the aisle,
00:45:00 one person of the hundred and something
00:45:01 is gonna have diarrhea. - I don't know,
00:45:02 I think you have to take care of yourself
00:45:03 in that situation.
00:45:04 - No, I agree with Jake.
00:45:05 It's a little odd to me
00:45:06 that there's absolutely no video footage of this.
00:45:08 - We should just put out Jersey Jerry's catastrophe
00:45:11 and be like, live footage.
00:45:12 Yeah, live footage.
00:45:14 - This is a catastrophe.
00:45:16 - It's definitely someone that was on the flight
00:45:17 that fell asleep too.
00:45:18 Like, all right, go to Barcelona.
00:45:20 - Yeah.
00:45:20 Wait, they were going to Barcelona?
00:45:22 - Yeah.
00:45:22 - Holy shit, that sucks.
00:45:23 - How mad would you be?
00:45:24 You're about to go on an awesome vacation.
00:45:26 - To Barthelona?
00:45:27 - Barthelona, you have to turn around
00:45:28 'cause somebody's got diarrhea.
00:45:29 - Everywhere, everywhere.
00:45:31 I, it was everywhere.
00:45:34 - They should've shot the plane down.
00:45:35 - It was everywhere.
00:45:36 Yeah, he should've just jumped out.
00:45:38 - Yeah.
00:45:38 - He should've been like, all right, enough for me.
00:45:40 I'd rather not live with this.
00:45:42 All right, good, who's back?
00:45:43 - Thank you.
00:45:44 - Yeah, PFT.
00:45:46 - Great, who's back, Hank?
00:45:47 - Thank you.
00:45:48 My who's back of the week is Indianapolis Colts fans.
00:45:51 - Yes.
00:45:52 - So as we promised on this podcast,
00:45:55 when Jim Irsay went after Dan Snyder,
00:45:57 I said I would become a Colts fan in the AFC
00:46:00 and purchase season tickets
00:46:01 if Irsay's push ultimately led Dan Snyder to sell the team.
00:46:05 A man of my word.
00:46:06 - I matched.
00:46:07 - I bought Colts season tickets.
00:46:08 Big Cat is matching, so we have a total of four tickets
00:46:11 to give away to Indianapolis Colts fans
00:46:14 for every home game this year.
00:46:15 Also, I should just say I matched
00:46:18 and then I fucked up the match
00:46:19 because they tried to get me to have Colts tickets for life.
00:46:22 There was a box I couldn't unclick
00:46:24 that would give me Colts tickets for life.
00:46:26 So I looked in my email and I thought I had 'em.
00:46:30 I don't, but I'm buying two tickets for every game,
00:46:33 which actually will work in someone's favor
00:46:35 because like Christmas time,
00:46:36 I'll probably buy like, you know, 100 level tickets.
00:46:40 - Yeah, so we have--
00:46:40 - First game, it's gonna be 600 level,
00:46:42 but I have my two tickets.
00:46:43 - So we have a total of four tickets to give away.
00:46:45 I do have the season tickets
00:46:47 and also shout out to the Colts because they reached out.
00:46:49 This is pretty awesome.
00:46:50 They heard the podcast and they said,
00:46:52 "We appreciate you guys becoming season ticket holders."
00:46:55 We're gonna throw in two VIP sideline passes pre-game.
00:47:00 - Wait, we need to up that to four.
00:47:02 - So you can go, I can ask, I can ask.
00:47:05 But right now, we have two VIP sideline passes
00:47:08 for the pre-game as well as the two tickets for me
00:47:11 and two tickets for Big Cat.
00:47:12 So we have to figure out how to give them away.
00:47:14 If you're an Indianapolis Colts fan,
00:47:16 here's what we're doing for week one.
00:47:17 I wanna see youngsters go to this game.
00:47:20 I wanna see youngsters get these tickets
00:47:21 that wouldn't be able to--
00:47:22 - Not in a creepy way.
00:47:23 - Not in a creepy way.
00:47:25 But I'd like to see the best Jim Irsay lookalike youngster,
00:47:28 Baby Irsay.
00:47:29 If you're an Indianapolis Colts fan,
00:47:32 maybe you've got a son or a daughter,
00:47:34 wants to get dressed up like Baby Irsay,
00:47:36 send us pictures of a Baby Irsay
00:47:39 and we will give you free tickets to go see the Colts.
00:47:41 We have four of them.
00:47:42 - Yeah, so winners and second place.
00:47:44 - Winners and second place both receive tickets
00:47:46 and then at least two VIP sideline passes for pre-game.
00:47:50 Not sure if we're gonna have four, but we do have two.
00:47:52 - We'll just give them to both of Baby Irsays.
00:47:54 - Just the kids, yeah.
00:47:55 - They'll just go to themselves.
00:47:56 - So how do we wanna do this?
00:47:58 Tweet at part of my take?
00:47:59 - Well, people might not have Twitter/X.
00:48:03 We do the PMT intern email.
00:48:04 - Yeah, sure.
00:48:05 - PMT intern@barstoolsports.com.
00:48:06 - And we'll tweet out the winners.
00:48:07 - But we will tweet out the winners.
00:48:09 - Yeah.
00:48:09 - Yeah, but if people don't have Twitter.
00:48:10 - Okay, so either tweet them at us or email to PMT.
00:48:15 - Intern@barstoolsports.com.
00:48:17 - PMT intern@barstoolsports.com.
00:48:20 - Yeah.
00:48:20 - And we'll select four winners.
00:48:21 So giving back.
00:48:22 - Yes.
00:48:23 - Feels good to give back to the community.
00:48:24 - Feels great.
00:48:25 - My other Who's Back of the Week plug God is Pup Punk.
00:48:27 So if you're in Columbia, South Carolina,
00:48:29 Pup Punk is gonna be playing at the Bojangles
00:48:32 in Columbia, South Carolina, as we've always wanted to do.
00:48:34 - Don't be eating a hot dog in front of Shane Beamer.
00:48:36 - Don't do it.
00:48:37 We're gonna be eating Bo-Berry biscuits
00:48:38 in front of Shane Beamer,
00:48:39 'cause the Bo-Berry biscuit is elite.
00:48:41 It's an elite fast food treat.
00:48:43 So we're gonna be there on Friday, free concert at nine.
00:48:46 That means me, Roan, Frankie, Robbie, Caroline, Nick.
00:48:51 We're gonna be there.
00:48:52 We're gonna play, I think, for an hour.
00:48:53 So come out, say hi.
00:48:55 I love the Cox.
00:48:56 - Yeah.
00:48:57 - I love the Cox.
00:48:58 - We always have.
00:48:59 - So I wanna see a bunch of Cox show up
00:49:00 to that concert at the Bojangles.
00:49:00 - Also, and then Saturday, the college football show
00:49:02 is gonna be in Tuscaloosa for the first time.
00:49:04 So I'll be in Tuscaloosa.
00:49:05 - Huge.
00:49:06 - Four o'clock, I think, is the time.
00:49:08 So everyone come out to that, Texas, Texas, Alabama.
00:49:11 - I did hear some people say Malik Murphy.
00:49:13 I heard people say Malik Murphy for Texas.
00:49:15 I don't know.
00:49:15 - Ooh.
00:49:16 Why, Quinn Ures?
00:49:18 - Quinn Ures looks like--
00:49:19 - Ganged up?
00:49:20 - He looks like a very good,
00:49:22 a very good average quarterback.
00:49:24 That's what Quinn Ures looks like to me.
00:49:25 - Yeah.
00:49:26 - I don't know, Malik Murphy's a fucking monster.
00:49:28 - Also, Quinn Ures cut his mullet.
00:49:30 - Yeah, that's a problem.
00:49:31 - That was a very big problem.
00:49:32 He cleaned up big time.
00:49:33 Okay, my who's back.
00:49:35 I got a couple.
00:49:36 The first is the Waterdogs in the semis.
00:49:40 - Yeah.
00:49:40 - Good for them.
00:49:41 - It's the semis?
00:49:42 - Two wins away, yep.
00:49:43 - Two wins away, okay.
00:49:44 - I'm so hands off, I went to the Cubs game
00:49:46 instead of watching them.
00:49:47 - Yeah, well, they--
00:49:47 - I knew that they were gonna win.
00:49:49 I didn't need to, I don't show up to watch Waterdogs games
00:49:53 unless they're already in the semifinals.
00:49:54 - It's the quarterfinals, you know?
00:49:56 Like we expect to be there every year.
00:49:57 - That's, that--
00:49:58 - We got rings, big cat.
00:49:59 - We have a tradition here at Waterdogs HQ,
00:50:03 and it's, we don't watch quarterfinals.
00:50:05 - We have--
00:50:06 - 'Cause we go to the semis,
00:50:07 and then we go to the finals,
00:50:08 then we win the whole fucking thing.
00:50:09 - We have high standards.
00:50:10 - Back to back.
00:50:11 - We got the final four coming up.
00:50:12 - If we don't go back to back, I hate this team.
00:50:14 - Who are you playing?
00:50:16 - Waterdogs versus Canons.
00:50:17 - Fuck the Canons.
00:50:18 - If we don't go back to back,
00:50:19 I'm throwing my Waterdogs ring into the Chicago River.
00:50:23 - I'm gonna--
00:50:23 (laughing)
00:50:24 By the way, I brought it.
00:50:26 - You know, I see it.
00:50:26 - Like six weeks ago.
00:50:27 - Yeah, get ready.
00:50:28 - They're nice.
00:50:29 - I'm throwing it in the river.
00:50:30 - I'm gonna do it, but I'm gonna at the last minute
00:50:31 not throw it, and then just throw a paper airplane
00:50:34 that says, "Thank you, Waterdogs."
00:50:35 - Oh, nice.
00:50:36 - I love those fake jersey-burning ones.
00:50:38 - Okay.
00:50:39 And then my other who's back,
00:50:41 Hank, did you see the report
00:50:42 about your wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster?
00:50:45 - Yeah, I mean, this was--
00:50:46 - This one was weird.
00:50:47 - This was a Florio special.
00:50:48 It's red-like.
00:50:49 - It was crazy.
00:50:50 It was, I've never seen a report like this.
00:50:53 If you guys didn't see it,
00:50:54 it was Juju Smith-Schuster's knee
00:50:57 could explode at any point.
00:50:59 - Oh.
00:51:00 - And is a mess, according to Albert Breer.
00:51:03 Could explode at any point.
00:51:05 What the fuck does that mean?
00:51:07 - It's like the plot to "Die Hard."
00:51:08 - Couldn't anyone's fucking knee explode at any point?
00:51:11 - Yeah.
00:51:12 - Right?
00:51:13 - He's been practicing playing.
00:51:14 (laughing)
00:51:15 - I just saw it, I was like, what is going,
00:51:16 I actually read it wrong the first time.
00:51:18 I didn't read the word knee,
00:51:20 and I thought it was just Juju Smith-Schuster
00:51:22 could explode at any point.
00:51:23 And then I read it back, I was like, wait, what the fuck?
00:51:27 - I thought it was Buckcrack Sports, I got.
00:51:28 - Yeah, where was it from, Hank?
00:51:30 - It was Albert Breer.
00:51:31 - But that's not Florio.
00:51:32 - No.
00:51:33 - No, I know it read, but it read like a Florio.
00:51:35 - So anything negative reads like a Florio.
00:51:38 - This is like you like seeing like the New Yorker cartoons
00:51:40 and you're like, that's a Florio.
00:51:42 I could see it, I could see it right now.
00:51:44 Shout out Florio, by the way,
00:51:46 he did a book reading in Wheeling, West Virginia.
00:51:48 And he said that one person asked him
00:51:50 about his fantasy football team
00:51:51 and he refused to answer it
00:51:53 because he thought the person had FaceTimed us.
00:51:56 So it's good that we just live in his head.
00:51:58 - Yeah.
00:51:59 - This time of year, it's the best.
00:52:00 We'll get him again at some point,
00:52:02 but it's good that we've taken a break
00:52:03 and just let him live in horror.
00:52:05 - He's just too ready for it right now.
00:52:06 - Yeah.
00:52:07 - Which is its own punishment.
00:52:08 - Right, exactly, he's just walking around
00:52:10 flinching all the time.
00:52:11 - Yeah.
00:52:12 - Okay, Jake, your who's back?
00:52:14 - My who's back is the US Open.
00:52:16 - Oh, okay.
00:52:17 - Oh.
00:52:18 - Yeah, Americans are cooking in this tournament this year.
00:52:20 I don't know if you guys have been following it at all,
00:52:22 but there's three American men in the quarterfinals.
00:52:25 - Isner.
00:52:26 - Isner retired.
00:52:27 - I know, I know.
00:52:27 - I saw that, he was sad, he was crying.
00:52:29 - Oh yeah, some kid fucking gave me Isner's bet
00:52:32 on Thursday, Wednesday morning.
00:52:34 - Yeah, his retirement match.
00:52:35 - Best serve, serve goat.
00:52:37 - Serve goat.
00:52:38 - Yep.
00:52:39 - And eroticism, I serve goat.
00:52:39 - What about Novaks?
00:52:41 - Oh yeah, I see Rogers.
00:52:41 - You see Rogers?
00:52:42 - Yeah, Kings respecting Kings.
00:52:45 Rogers went to the US Open and he had a picture of Novak
00:52:48 and he said, "Shout out my guy Novaks,"
00:52:51 and had crossed out Moderna, the ad that was on the US Open.
00:52:56 Listen, Rogers and I are starting to become
00:52:58 very much alike.
00:52:59 We both agree that Novaks is the goat.
00:53:02 Yeah.
00:53:03 - Yeah, so the bottom half of the men's brackets,
00:53:06 three Americans and Djokovic.
00:53:07 - Of course.
00:53:08 - Is it Tiafoe, is he still in?
00:53:09 - Tiafoe's still in it, yeah.
00:53:10 - I like Tiafoe.
00:53:11 - I still think he should come on the show.
00:53:11 - Djokovic lost the first two sets on Friday night.
00:53:15 Everyone's like, "Oh, you've got to be kidding me."
00:53:17 I went to sleep and I had no care in the world.
00:53:19 Of course he was going to win.
00:53:21 - Jake, you have to keep reminding us every major tournament
00:53:23 like who these different tennis players are.
00:53:25 Who's the one that gets upset all the time
00:53:27 that people hate?
00:53:28 - Oh, Kyrgios, but he's hurt.
00:53:29 - Okay, I like him.
00:53:30 I guess people hate him.
00:53:31 - Wait, is Alcatraz not in it?
00:53:33 - He's the number one seed.
00:53:33 He's on the top half of the bracket.
00:53:34 - Oh, got it, got it, got it.
00:53:35 So wait, we're celebrating Americans
00:53:37 being in the quarterfinals?
00:53:39 After we just talked about how the quarterfinals
00:53:40 don't matter?
00:53:41 - It's the first time, I think, in over a decade
00:53:43 that four men made the quarterfinals.
00:53:46 Or around 16.
00:53:47 - Let me know when they actually get to the semis.
00:53:49 - Well, one's guaranteed.
00:53:50 Tiafoe versus Blake Shelton.
00:53:52 - Okay, great.
00:53:53 So one?
00:53:53 - At least.
00:53:54 - That's not a story.
00:53:56 - Versus Blake Shelton?
00:53:57 - Ben Shelton, sorry.
00:53:58 - Okay, all right.
00:53:59 That would be very confusing.
00:54:00 - He's a fucking dual sport athlete.
00:54:01 - You should smoke him.
00:54:03 - Yeah.
00:54:04 - Come on, Jake.
00:54:05 We can't celebrate quarterfinals.
00:54:07 - Wait, it's been a decade.
00:54:08 - On this podcast?
00:54:09 - Are the Americans playing each other?
00:54:11 - Yeah, so one's guaranteed in the semis.
00:54:13 - Cannibalization, man.
00:54:14 It's, I don't like that.
00:54:16 - Yeah, but yeah, I'm pulling for Tiafoe.
00:54:19 I think he should be on this show.
00:54:20 - I am too.
00:54:21 DC guy.
00:54:21 - Yep.
00:54:22 - Yeah, let me know when one of them wins it.
00:54:25 - The whole thing?
00:54:26 - Yeah, we suck at tennis.
00:54:27 - Yeah, it's been a struggle.
00:54:28 - We haven't won one in how long?
00:54:31 - I think Roddick or-
00:54:32 - Sampras?
00:54:33 No, what was the last time?
00:54:34 - Agassi, probably.
00:54:35 - Roddick never won a major, right?
00:54:37 - Yeah, he did.
00:54:38 I think.
00:54:39 - Did he?
00:54:41 I thought he was supposed to be next up,
00:54:42 but he never came.
00:54:43 - He just was the-
00:54:44 - He's the anti-Dion.
00:54:44 - He was a serve god.
00:54:46 - Did he win a major?
00:54:47 Did Roddick win a major?
00:54:48 - I'm looking it up.
00:54:49 I'm looking it up right now.
00:54:50 - I don't think, ugh!
00:54:51 I don't think Roddick ever, ugh!
00:54:53 Won a major.
00:54:54 - You might be right.
00:54:56 - Yeah.
00:54:57 Jake, I know more tennis than you.
00:54:58 - No, he won the US Open.
00:55:00 - Oh, he did?
00:55:01 - Yeah, 2003.
00:55:02 - My laptop's not in flux.
00:55:03 - So it's been 20 years.
00:55:04 - And then he was in the finals at Wimbledon for three years.
00:55:07 - So it's been 20 years since we've won one?
00:55:09 And it's our type, listen.
00:55:11 If I ran for president, I'd be like,
00:55:15 we always win the US Open.
00:55:16 We just won't let anyone else play in it.
00:55:18 It's just only Americans.
00:55:19 It's the US Open, golf and tennis.
00:55:21 We need to win this.
00:55:22 - Yeah.
00:55:23 - We have to.
00:55:24 But Novak's gonna win, 'cause he's the GOAT.
00:55:26 Okay, good job, Jake.
00:55:27 - Thanks.
00:55:28 - Quarterfinals.
00:55:29 Ugh!
00:55:30 - Yeah.
00:55:31 - Just keep us updated.
00:55:32 - I will.
00:55:33 - I wanna see one of them in the finals.
00:55:35 Then I will root, unless it's against Novak.
00:55:37 - Well, like I said, three Americans and Novak
00:55:39 are the bottom half of the bracket.
00:55:40 - Oh, so yeah, he's gonna waste 'em.
00:55:43 He's gonna waste 'em.
00:55:44 - You never know.
00:55:45 - Yeah, we went back to back, 2002, 2003,
00:55:47 Sampras, Roddick, and then nothing.
00:55:49 - Sampras, all-time hairy dude.
00:55:51 - Very hairy.
00:55:52 - Just the hairiest.
00:55:53 - Super Greek.
00:55:54 - So hairy.
00:55:55 - Also, women's side, Coco Gauff, still alive.
00:55:58 - Still alive.
00:55:59 - Yeah.
00:55:59 - Coco Gauff next up?
00:56:02 - I think so.
00:56:02 - Okay.
00:56:03 - Yeah.
00:56:04 - All right, you said it.
00:56:05 - Jimmy Butler's been in her box.
00:56:06 - Whoa, Jake!
00:56:07 - Whoa, Jake!
00:56:09 - Respectfully.
00:56:10 - Damn, Jake!
00:56:12 - That's what it's called in tennis.
00:56:14 Like you're in someone's box.
00:56:15 - I understand, but you understand what you said.
00:56:17 Jimmy Butler's been in her box.
00:56:18 - Whoa.
00:56:19 - I phrased that wrong.
00:56:20 - All right.
00:56:21 - I'm not wrong, I didn't phrase it wrong.
00:56:22 - Well, yeah, you did.
00:56:23 - Yeah, you definitely, that's exactly what you did.
00:56:26 - You could have said sweet.
00:56:27 - Yeah.
00:56:29 - He's been in, you should have said--
00:56:30 - He's attended the game.
00:56:32 - You should have said Jimmy Butler's been in her sweet box.
00:56:34 - Yeah.
00:56:35 - Yes.
00:56:36 - Yes, that would have been much better.
00:56:37 - Okay.
00:56:38 - Okay, let's get to Field Yates.
00:56:41 Field Yates, great interview, NFL preview with Field Yates.
00:56:44 Part of my take is sponsored by BetterHelp.
00:56:46 Do you ever find that just as you're trying
00:56:48 to fall asleep, your brain suddenly won't stop talking?
00:56:51 Do your thoughts start racing right before bed
00:56:53 or at other inopportune moments?
00:56:56 Well, it turns out one great way to make those racing
00:56:58 thoughts go away is to talk them through.
00:57:00 Therapy gives you a place to do that so you can get out
00:57:03 of your negative thought cycles and find some mental
00:57:06 and emotional peace.

00:57:34 So if you are someone who has felt like, hey,
00:57:36 I don't need therapy, everyone needs to talk out
00:57:39 their problems, everyone needs to talk through some anxiety.
00:57:41 You might not even realize that you have anxiety
00:57:44 or you have something that you're dealing with

00:58:09 Okay, here he is, Field Yates.
00:58:12 Okay, we now welcome on a very, very special guest.
00:58:15 In person, he was-- - Double Barry.
00:58:17 - Yeah, Double Barry, he was nice enough
00:58:19 to change his flights around.
00:58:21 He has been on to prank Mike Florio,
00:58:25 but we thought, we know Field Yates is a fan of the show,
00:58:28 we know he knows football very, very well inside and out.
00:58:32 So let's get him on, let's talk some ball.
00:58:35 Before we talk ball, Schefter asked me to ask you
00:58:38 what your middle name is.
00:58:39 - Oh, God, Minister.
00:58:41 - What?
00:58:42 - Yeah, I'm a very non-religious person,
00:58:45 so not exactly appropriate.
00:58:47 My mother's maiden name, so.
00:58:48 - Okay, that makes more sense.
00:58:49 So otherwise it's-- - My name's definitely
00:58:51 followed me throughout my life.
00:58:52 - 'Cause it could be Stolen Valor.
00:58:53 - Could be, yeah. - Minister Yates.
00:58:55 - I've officiated two weddings,
00:58:56 but not a particularly religious or spiritual person.
00:58:59 - Okay, that's not as cool of a story.
00:59:00 Schefter kind of led me down the wrong way there.
00:59:02 - You know, the best part about having a name
00:59:03 that's unique is that growing up,
00:59:06 when certain age kids did sort of have their thoughts
00:59:09 on being named Field, and it's like,
00:59:10 you have zero control over your name.
00:59:13 - Yeah, that's true. - You know, like--
00:59:14 - What was the age, what was the age kids
00:59:16 started making fun of you? - Yeah, it's probably like,
00:59:17 I'm thinking like eight to 10.
00:59:19 - Okay. - I remember,
00:59:20 I will distinctly remember being like,
00:59:21 I have an older brother, younger sister,
00:59:23 picking up my older brother when he started
00:59:24 at a new school, and I was probably around,
00:59:26 when he was probably 10 or so, so I'm thinking eight to 10.
00:59:29 - Isn't that the worst, that first moment?
00:59:31 I remember maybe when I was like seven or eight.
00:59:34 - A Dan gets you some flack. - No, no, no, at a pool,
00:59:37 one of my friends was like, hey,
00:59:38 see if you can hold your hands together
00:59:40 in front of you like this, and I did,
00:59:42 and he's like, look, you have tits,
00:59:43 and I was like, God damn it.
00:59:44 (laughing)
00:59:46 And that was it, it was just like, fuck.
00:59:48 Like, I never, you're so young.
00:59:50 - They let me off easy by just saying like,
00:59:52 your name's weird. - Right, when you're young,
00:59:53 you don't even think about these things,
00:59:55 and that first moment you think about it,
00:59:56 you're like, well, this will be something new,
00:59:59 new insecurity unlocked for the rest of my life.
01:00:01 - Content 30 years later, though, so on the plus side.
01:00:03 - Yeah, true. - You got that going for you.
01:00:04 - People remember it, too. - Yeah.
01:00:05 - Yeah, no, and you know what's weird is,
01:00:07 like, you guys, I'm sure you guys,
01:00:08 to the 100th degree, deal with this,
01:00:10 but like, you know, working at ESPN, it's a big company,
01:00:12 and I've been there for over a decade now,
01:00:14 and all the people, like, amazing people
01:00:16 that work in like, studio operations,
01:00:18 but like, all the time, you know,
01:00:19 it's a different crew every single day.
01:00:21 Hey, Field, how's it going?
01:00:22 And you're like, shit. - Oh, yeah.
01:00:24 - I know, like, we've definitely said hello,
01:00:26 we've definitely introduced ourselves before,
01:00:28 but like, that might have been eight years
01:00:30 for all I know, and it's like, hey, pal,
01:00:33 did you guys do this recently? - Yeah, chief, yeah.
01:00:34 - Like, you know, like, the worst names
01:00:36 we call in our stuff. - Buddy, buddy, yeah.
01:00:37 - That's constantly me. - You ever buddy anybody?
01:00:39 - Way too much. - You gotta get a little,
01:00:40 you got a little older, and you can do sport.
01:00:42 Are you, now, are you subconsciously
01:00:45 rooting for Justin Fields?
01:00:46 - Yes, not even subconsciously.
01:00:48 - Okay, just outwardly? - Just blatantly, yeah.
01:00:51 'Cause that, you have to have a little bit
01:00:52 of kinship there. - Totally, yeah.
01:00:54 And you know, I'm not trying to like,
01:00:56 cater to the home team here now,
01:00:57 but you know, Ryan Poles and I,
01:00:58 my first job out of college, I got hired by the Chiefs
01:01:01 to go work as a scouting assistant,
01:01:03 which is as entry-level of a scouting job
01:01:06 as there is in the NFL, and we had,
01:01:08 there were three desks in one room,
01:01:10 and it was me, Ryan Poles, now the Bears GM,
01:01:13 also hired at the same time,
01:01:15 and then a guy named Mike Borgonzi,
01:01:16 who's the Chiefs GM, Chief Assistant GM, excuse me.
01:01:18 So, like, the three of us were in this fishbowl together
01:01:21 for a couple years, and so, yeah,
01:01:24 you like to see people that you know do well.
01:01:26 So, if Justin Fields does well,
01:01:28 then Ryan Poles might be the king of the city.
01:01:30 - Wait, I didn't realize you were,
01:01:31 how long were you in the NFL for?
01:01:33 - Two seasons with the Chiefs.
01:01:34 So, the first year was scouting assistant,
01:01:36 and my second year, I was Todd Haley's right-hand man.
01:01:39 - Oh, wow. - That must be something.
01:01:41 - Oh, that's awesome.
01:01:42 - I have very limited experience with Todd Haley.
01:01:44 I've met him a few times, usually at the combine.
01:01:46 We might take this story out,
01:01:47 but last time I was hanging out with him,
01:01:49 he just showed me pictures of his wife's tits.
01:01:51 He was like, "Check this out, we're not taking that out."
01:01:54 - Seriously? - Well, he did show it to me.
01:01:55 He was showing it to a group, like, check 'em out.
01:01:58 Pretty sweet, huh? - I had a great experience.
01:01:59 So, my second year, it's actually,
01:02:01 like, not to derail where this was going,
01:02:03 but so, when I first got hired,
01:02:06 there was, like, five of us that got hired
01:02:08 in the summer of 2009.
01:02:10 Three of us in the scouting staff, the guys I mentioned,
01:02:12 and then one of the coaches, Nick Sirianni.
01:02:15 So, Nick Sirianni, now the Eagles head coach,
01:02:16 was the quality control offensive coach,
01:02:18 or the offensive quality control coach.
01:02:20 He was, like, really at Todd's mercy.
01:02:22 I was, you know, a little more,
01:02:23 was it like a slightly larger buffer?
01:02:26 But yeah, Nick Sirianni, and I love people,
01:02:27 are always like, "Yeah, so you knew back then, right?"
01:02:30 Totally, you know, like, 22-year-old me
01:02:32 knew that 23-year-old Nick Sirianni was gonna,
01:02:35 in his second year, be a Super Bowl head coach,
01:02:38 and, like, have it all figured out.
01:02:39 But yeah, it's been great to follow those guys.
01:02:40 - Was the goal to get to being, like, a head coach?
01:02:43 Is that what you ultimately wanted to achieve?
01:02:45 Or did you, were you like, "I'm gonna play the long game,
01:02:47 "and make a lasting defense." - Yeah, be a fantasy football guy.
01:02:49 Yeah, yeah, no, the goal was to be in football
01:02:51 for a long time.
01:02:53 The lifestyle is a little different than,
01:02:55 I'm from Massachusetts, and, like,
01:02:57 moving out to Kansas City, when I first got out there,
01:02:59 like, your first, like, few years out of college,
01:03:02 between high school reunions,
01:03:03 like, five-year high school reunion,
01:03:05 my friends who were on, like, the early adopters
01:03:07 of getting married and, like, having kids,
01:03:08 you know, like, shit, like, I'm three years out of college,
01:03:11 and I have not been to one significant life event.
01:03:13 - Right. - That probably weighed on me
01:03:14 more than I expected it to.
01:03:16 So I think it was more of a life decision.
01:03:18 - The five-year reunion is a crock of shit.
01:03:21 - Yeah. - Totally.
01:03:22 - And you put so much weight into it at the moment,
01:03:24 you're like, "Oh, I gotta have my shit together.
01:03:26 "I got some friends that are, like,
01:03:27 "making six figures in finance."
01:03:29 - Right. - And in reality,
01:03:30 the five-year reunion is basically,
01:03:32 it's utterly meaningless.
01:03:34 - You're like the anti-Tai Lu.
01:03:36 - Yes, I am. - Everyone in Tai Lu
01:03:36 said that he missed six different funerals,
01:03:38 and everyone's like, "Dude, you had six funerals
01:03:41 "in, like, a month, and the Clippers sucked last year."
01:03:44 - Right. - So you're the anti-Tai Lu,
01:03:45 but that's respectful, so two years at the Chiefs.
01:03:47 - Yep, then I came back. - Anywhere.
01:03:49 - I came back, I was living back in Massachusetts.
01:03:51 I moved back in with my mom, which, you know,
01:03:53 that's the kind of thing that'll humble you
01:03:54 at whatever, 24, 25 years old, and then--
01:03:56 - A little different than Todd Haley.
01:03:57 - A little different than working
01:03:58 with Todd Haley every single day.
01:04:01 My mom had slightly different priorities than Todd did,
01:04:03 you know, and different schedule, too.
01:04:05 So, and then I started, like, the media thing.
01:04:07 I was like, and not to date ourselves,
01:04:10 but, like, you guys remember, like,
01:04:11 the days of having a blog.
01:04:12 I mean, you guys came into prominence.
01:04:15 You guys still, obviously,
01:04:16 have a very strong online presence,
01:04:17 but, like, Twitter was not in full force at that point.
01:04:21 Obviously, Instagram and TikTok and all this stuff
01:04:23 was not nearly where it was, so I started a blog,
01:04:26 and being in Boston, there's so many outlets there,
01:04:29 so I had a million different places to try to reach out to,
01:04:31 and I had the same experience that most people do.
01:04:33 Like, you know, no one responds to your emails,
01:04:35 and then there was one person, a guy at ESPN Boston,
01:04:38 Mike Reeves, who covers the Patriots for ESPN,
01:04:39 who responded to my email,
01:04:41 and that was the start of my ESPN career.
01:04:43 - Wait, so you're a genius.
01:04:44 Two years with the Chiefs,
01:04:45 you get to put that on your resume and be like,
01:04:47 "Yeah, I worked in the NFL for two years."
01:04:48 - Yeah, I mean, that's the best part,
01:04:49 is people are like, so, like, you know,
01:04:51 you're the Mahomes, like, really, like,
01:04:53 if not for your contributions,
01:04:56 Patrick Mahomes would not be a Chief right now.
01:04:57 - You never know, I mean, it's the butterfly effect.
01:04:59 Like, maybe there was something that you did one day,
01:05:02 you got Alex Smith the right smoothie,
01:05:04 he went out there, played well,
01:05:06 and you ended up in right, the exact position to trade,
01:05:08 to draft Mahomes.
01:05:09 - You know, we actually had a gem
01:05:10 of a quarterback room when I was there.
01:05:11 This was pre-Alex Smith.
01:05:13 So, Matt Castle.
01:05:14 - Oh.
01:05:15 - So, like--
01:05:15 - Oh, yeah, it was the baby Patriots.
01:05:16 - Yeah, yep, so Castle, Vrabel got traded there
01:05:19 that same off-season.
01:05:20 Vrabel, absolute legend, obviously.
01:05:23 And I swore, I was like, I was so positive
01:05:25 he would never coach after football,
01:05:26 'cause he seemed like one of those guys that was like,
01:05:29 you know, he was so, like,
01:05:31 football clearly was like his entire life leading up to it,
01:05:34 but one of those guys that just felt like
01:05:36 whenever it was time, he was gonna be so at peace,
01:05:38 and he had accomplished so much,
01:05:39 that you're like, dude, like,
01:05:41 you can't possibly go up from being a three-time champion,
01:05:43 and like, whatever it was, 12 catches for 12 touchdowns,
01:05:46 and here he is, whatever, a decade later,
01:05:48 and, you know, great head coach.
01:05:50 But Brody Croyle, Alabama legend.
01:05:52 - Yep.
01:05:53 - He threw the ball a frickin' mile, it was great.
01:05:54 - Yeah.
01:05:55 - And Matt Castle.
01:05:57 - Tyler Palco.
01:05:58 - Palco was there, yep.
01:05:59 - Palco threw that pass against the Bears
01:06:01 to end a half-hill era.
01:06:03 - Oh, yeah, I remember that.
01:06:05 Not many lefty quarterbacks anymore, so.
01:06:07 And then he had that game,
01:06:08 he started that one-night football
01:06:09 against the Patriots, actually.
01:06:11 So, Palco, hey, he made his mark.
01:06:12 - What a legend.
01:06:12 - Great guy, yeah, great dude.
01:06:14 - Yeah, that's a solid quarterback room.
01:06:16 That's just great names.
01:06:17 I remember those Chiefs,
01:06:18 they had a lot of people from the Patriots organization
01:06:22 in the front office, right?
01:06:24 And my theory has been that Belichick sends his disciples
01:06:27 across the league to destroy other teams
01:06:30 and then come home to tear down franchises from the inside.
01:06:33 Did you get that vibe when you were there?
01:06:35 - I mean, it's hard to argue otherwise, right?
01:06:37 - Look at the track record, yeah.
01:06:39 - How many head coaches?
01:06:41 If you consider Braybill a disciple,
01:06:43 I feel like that's kinda--
01:06:44 - That doesn't really count.
01:06:45 - That's stretching, right?
01:06:45 You played for him, that feels different to me.
01:06:47 Like, is Kevin O'Connell a disciple?
01:06:48 He played for Belichick, right?
01:06:51 - But yeah, it has not been,
01:06:52 I wouldn't say the track record is exactly sterling
01:06:54 in the post-Patriot chapter of this.
01:06:57 - My other theory is that you're a mouthpiece
01:06:59 for the New England Patriots, is that fair to say?
01:07:01 - Yeah, I'd say that's pretty much like how ESPN hired him.
01:07:02 - Well, you're friends with Belichick, right?
01:07:05 - So prior to my Chiefs time, I spent four,
01:07:08 it's hard to call it an internship
01:07:10 because there's not an online application
01:07:12 that you go and you apply to Patriots,
01:07:14 sort of like scouting intern.
01:07:16 But I spent four summers,
01:07:17 and then I went to college in Connecticut,
01:07:20 so getting home during winter break was easy.
01:07:24 I went to like four straight years, basically.
01:07:26 I was at every Patriots training camp
01:07:28 during the, when I was back home for any kind of breaks.
01:07:31 I was over at the Patriot facility.
01:07:33 I'd go to all the games, home and road games,
01:07:35 which was awesome for me.
01:07:36 And like the Super Bowl they lost against the Giants,
01:07:39 the perfect season.
01:07:40 There's like this infamous photo
01:07:41 that friends send to me whenever it pops up.
01:07:44 Me like gnawing on my long-sleeve shirt,
01:07:47 right behind Belichick. - Frank DeTank, yeah.
01:07:48 - Yes. - Frank DeTank, yeah.
01:07:49 - Frank DeTank style.
01:07:50 And yeah, so four years with Patriots,
01:07:54 which is kind of like my,
01:07:55 that was like my, I call it like my Rosetta Stone, right?
01:07:57 Like that was where I kind of learned it all.
01:07:59 So yeah, I mean, Belichick may or may not
01:08:01 have had a conversation with me on the way out the door.
01:08:04 It was like, I think Kansas City would treat you well.
01:08:06 You know, like haven't really infiltrated the Midwest yet.
01:08:09 - Mm-hmm. (laughs)
01:08:10 - Just give it a couple years,
01:08:11 and see what happens. - They're not even,
01:08:11 they're building something up.
01:08:12 - I went my line of work. - They got a quarterback
01:08:13 room. - I wanted to be the person
01:08:14 that snapped the street, right?
01:08:15 - He's like the advanced scout.
01:08:16 - Yeah, he's like, "You're out, check it out."
01:08:17 - I was just getting ahead of it, right?
01:08:18 - He's like, "They've got Tyler Palko and Brody Croyle.
01:08:21 "They're up next.
01:08:22 "I want you to destroy that franchise."
01:08:24 - But his Belichick son, Steve,
01:08:25 the one who's now their defensive play caller,
01:08:27 and same age, so we were right there together.
01:08:28 It was great, had a blast.
01:08:29 Great, great dude.
01:08:31 Would be a great PMT guest one day.
01:08:33 - Yeah. - Great.
01:08:34 - I want the Bill Belichick.
01:08:35 - I know, I know he's like one of your white whales.
01:08:36 - Yeah. - Maybe do a double duo.
01:08:38 - Does Steve actually, does he have
01:08:39 the same Bill Belichick voice,
01:08:41 or does he put that on just to mess with the media?
01:08:43 - That is a carbon copy.
01:08:45 - That's awesome. - It's like a little bit,
01:08:47 it's disjarring where it's like,
01:08:48 it's disjarring, you're just like,
01:08:49 "Wait, what?" - Yeah.
01:08:50 - Disarming, it's like.
01:08:51 - That's awesome.
01:08:52 - They are the same people, minus the hair.
01:08:54 - Yeah, all right, let's talk some ball.
01:08:56 - Let's do it.
01:08:57 - I wanna start with a thought starter.
01:09:00 Give me the seven teams that are going
01:09:01 to the playoffs in the AFC.
01:09:02 - You know what, I was hanging out with a buddy today
01:09:06 here in Chicago, and he was like,
01:09:08 "Have you guys talked about what you're gonna discuss?"
01:09:09 And I was like, "I figure we'll just crank it up."
01:09:11 - Talk ball, yeah.
01:09:12 - And then he was like, "Well, who's making
01:09:14 "the playoffs in the AFC?"
01:09:15 So we had this conversation earlier.
01:09:16 Division winners, Bills, big time all the way in.
01:09:19 Bengals, Jaguars Chiefs.
01:09:22 I would say nothing surprising there.
01:09:24 You a Titans guy?
01:09:25 - I feel like this is a classic Vrabel spot
01:09:28 where everyone's forgotten the Titans.
01:09:31 - It's definitely a Vrabel team.
01:09:32 - And they had that losing streak last year
01:09:34 where Tannehill was out for some of it,
01:09:36 and this will be the year that everyone's
01:09:38 anointed the Jaguars.
01:09:39 - Totally.
01:09:40 - It's like, "Oh shit, we forgot about the Titans."
01:09:41 - Also, I don't know if you guys had the same experience
01:09:43 watching quarterback Mahomes talking about the Titans
01:09:46 in the week leading up to their game.
01:09:48 Was like, this was like Malik Willis was starting.
01:09:50 And that game went to overtime.
01:09:52 It was like Willis' first start.
01:09:54 And he kept going, "The defense is so tough."
01:09:56 And like, "One of the hardest groups will face
01:09:58 "all season."
01:09:58 You do sort of forget the Vrabel effect.
01:10:00 But yeah, and then Jets, Dolphins, Ravens.
01:10:05 So three teams from the AFC East.
01:10:07 - Okay, so that means no Chargers.
01:10:09 - No Chargers.
01:10:10 - That means no Browns.
01:10:11 That means no Steelers.
01:10:13 - No Steelers, yeah.
01:10:13 I think the streak comes to an end this year.
01:10:15 - It's so, I ask that because it's crazy
01:10:18 how stacked the AFC is.
01:10:20 That you do the seven teams, and then you leave out
01:10:23 like three or four teams that, it's not inconceivable
01:10:27 some of those teams could be in the Super Bowl.
01:10:28 Like the Chargers, the Jets, like those.
01:10:30 - They want, I mean, they all think they're going there
01:10:32 this year, right?
01:10:32 I always, the question I always ask people is,
01:10:34 so if you put the Steelers in the NFC South right now.
01:10:37 - Oh my God, yeah.
01:10:38 - Yeah.
01:10:39 - Ten win team.
01:10:40 - The Saints are gonna be legit, obviously.
01:10:41 I think they're gonna be good, but like,
01:10:42 don't you feel pretty good about the Steelers competing
01:10:44 for at least a wild card spot in the NFC?
01:10:46 - Yes, I mean, but you think that they're not gonna be
01:10:48 500 this year.
01:10:49 - I think the streak comes to an end.
01:10:50 - Wow.
01:10:51 - That would be sad.
01:10:52 - Which sounds crazy coming off the,
01:10:53 no, I am, after the preseason too, right?
01:10:55 Five touchdowns on five drives.
01:10:57 Sure, Steelers fans, everyone would be thrilled about this.
01:11:00 You know, if you look at that stretch,
01:11:01 like the last month of last year,
01:11:04 we were five and nine at one point.
01:11:05 Like the quarterback, and you play on the schedule,
01:11:08 I'm not trying to say they have any influence over that,
01:11:10 but like that was getting by the skin of their teeth
01:11:13 last year.
01:11:14 And they're obviously incredibly well coached,
01:11:16 and they do have tons of like individual talent.
01:11:19 Just that like someone has to be last in that division,
01:11:21 right?
01:11:22 - Yeah, and you think that's the Steelers, not the Browns.
01:11:24 Are you backing on Deshaun Watson as a human?
01:11:27 - So like, I try to start there.
01:11:31 Pass on that one.
01:11:33 So like, what's the more representative sample size?
01:11:37 Is it five seasons or is it one season?
01:11:40 Like my brain wants to say it's five seasons
01:11:42 where he was this amazing top five-ish quarterback.
01:11:46 And then last year, falls off a cliff.
01:11:48 It's been like, this preseason was pretty ugly
01:11:50 from the Browns.
01:11:51 - Yeah.
01:11:52 - And like, I feel like, and I could be wrong here,
01:11:55 I feel like during the training camps,
01:11:56 like beat writers probably tend to have
01:11:58 like a much rosier outlook on the teams they cover.
01:12:01 I feel like every team, you know,
01:12:02 we're days away from the season starting.
01:12:04 - Best shape of their life.
01:12:05 - I kind of feel like everyone's gonna be better
01:12:06 than they're actually gonna be right now.
01:12:08 But even like the Browns reporting
01:12:10 has been pretty downtrodden
01:12:11 about Deshaun's performance this summer.
01:12:12 Like more questions than answers,
01:12:15 like not totally sure this is gonna pay off.
01:12:18 And for a franchise that's had as many failures
01:12:21 at the quarterback spot,
01:12:22 like this would by far take the cake.
01:12:24 - Yeah, it'd be the crown jewel.
01:12:25 When you look at the contract that they gave him.
01:12:27 - Yes.
01:12:28 - But this is like, but don't, like this is the team
01:12:31 and I think they wear this crown now.
01:12:32 It may be that for a while the Chargers were there,
01:12:34 maybe the Broncos were there previously,
01:12:36 but like every year the Browns roster looks good.
01:12:39 - Yeah.
01:12:40 - Like where's the major weakness for the Browns this year?
01:12:42 I don't have a spot that I'm like,
01:12:44 well, they don't, you know, they have,
01:12:45 you know, they got wide receivers now.
01:12:47 The offensive line's good.
01:12:48 Nick Chubb's the man, like defensively.
01:12:50 It's like every level they've got a player
01:12:51 who could be a legitimate Pro Bowl
01:12:53 or defensive player of the year like Miles Garrett.
01:12:55 So it's hard to pinpoint like
01:12:57 that part is a major weakness for them.
01:13:00 But until they prove it, it's like they have that,
01:13:04 that sort of stink on them that the Chargers
01:13:06 in recent years and even the Broncos,
01:13:08 which we thought would go away last year with Russ,
01:13:10 I have had in the past like half decade.
01:13:12 - So why Chargers no playoffs?
01:13:14 - Like probably--
01:13:17 - It's a bold take, I like it.
01:13:18 - Just vibes.
01:13:19 - Yeah.
01:13:20 - Just vibes.
01:13:20 - No, no, no, no, they, I mean,
01:13:21 vibes may be a little bit contributing to--
01:13:23 - They always get injured.
01:13:23 - They always get injured.
01:13:24 - Yeah.
01:13:25 - It's like it's just a thing, right?
01:13:26 - The second half of that Jaguars game,
01:13:27 that was the ugliest football.
01:13:29 I've never been angry at a team than I have
01:13:32 when I was watching the Chargers just blow that.
01:13:34 - Yeah, and I feel like, and right when,
01:13:36 I think right after Herbert signed his extension,
01:13:38 like they had like a video that had been pre-made
01:13:41 and like it's somehow like it referenced that game
01:13:43 and I'm like, what are we doing right now?
01:13:46 Like, dude, we just got the guy signed up,
01:13:48 he's now signed for seven more years.
01:13:49 I'm like, I don't need to hear about--
01:13:50 - The first half was great.
01:13:51 - Yeah, it was great, great first half.
01:13:53 No, like the Chargers, like I think that the argument
01:13:56 against a team, any team that you like in the AFC
01:13:59 not making the playoffs is much more an argument
01:14:01 about teams that you do like.
01:14:02 - Right, right.
01:14:04 - Ravens I think are a sleeping giant.
01:14:05 I think they're like, at this point you can't call them
01:14:07 a sleeping giant, but a team that probably is not discussed
01:14:10 as much as Buffalo, Kansas City, and Cincinnati
01:14:12 I think is awesome.
01:14:12 They've got, they always like punch above their weight.
01:14:16 - Yeah, Tyler Huntley almost beat the Bengals.
01:14:18 - Like we used to-- - Pro bowler.
01:14:19 - Yeah, pro bowler Tyler Huntley.
01:14:21 But like the vibes are like legitimately,
01:14:23 like has a team changed how you felt about them more
01:14:27 from the start of the regular, the off season to right now?
01:14:29 Like there was a time where it felt like Lamar
01:14:31 was done, like would never play there again.
01:14:33 They had no wide receivers.
01:14:34 And all of a sudden you're like, Lamar, five years, great,
01:14:38 fired up to be there.
01:14:40 Last year was just bizarre at the last half.
01:14:42 Like-- - It was.
01:14:44 - I know it was an injury, but I think we'd all be naive
01:14:46 if we think that like his contract and his just general
01:14:49 frustration with the organization
01:14:50 was not contributing to it.
01:14:52 So I love the Ravens this year.
01:14:55 And then I'm having a hard time, like the Jets
01:14:58 and the Dolphins, like I'm having a hard time
01:15:00 finding a way to differentiate between the two of them.
01:15:03 Like the Jalen Ramsey injury doesn't help,
01:15:04 but they should be so much better.
01:15:07 Dude, Vic Fangio. - I forgot Vic Fangio
01:15:09 was there and it's like, damn.
01:15:11 - He's so good.
01:15:12 - He's a walking top 10 defense.
01:15:13 - Yeah, it reminds me a lot of what McVay did
01:15:15 when he brought in Wade Phillips.
01:15:16 - Yeah. - It's like you got
01:15:18 the new school guy, you got the old school guy
01:15:19 running the show on defense.
01:15:21 It tends to work.
01:15:22 - Yeah, he'll get the most out of them.
01:15:23 That's just what Vic Fangio does.
01:15:25 - Like coming into last year, it wasn't lack of talent
01:15:28 that betrayed them on defense.
01:15:29 Like they just didn't play well at all
01:15:31 last year defensively.
01:15:33 And with the Jets, the offensive line
01:15:36 will be discussed a million different ways.
01:15:38 And what makes me nervous about any of the teams
01:15:40 that I picked is that if you just go through,
01:15:42 and I try not to do this for every single team,
01:15:44 but like the Jets' first four games,
01:15:46 Bills, Cowboys, Patriots, Chiefs.
01:15:49 - Yeah.
01:15:50 - Like if you go one and three there,
01:15:52 oh and four is possible, then the whole season has,
01:15:56 that's like it's doomed.
01:15:56 - Yeah, you're fighting an uphill battle.
01:15:58 - It's impossible, I mean it's basically impossible.
01:16:00 But yeah, so Chargers, the argument's probably less
01:16:03 about them and more about just like the strength
01:16:04 of the Ravens, Jets, and Bills.
01:16:06 I'm sorry.
01:16:07 - It's not you, it's me.
01:16:08 For any team that you're leaving out of the AFC.
01:16:09 - There are a lot of people that listen to this podcast.
01:16:11 I gotta make sure that I protect myself a little bit.
01:16:13 - No one will get mad at you.
01:16:15 That's why.
01:16:16 - Have you ever met a Chargers fan in real life?
01:16:17 I've met one.
01:16:18 - Yeah, well we have Shane.
01:16:19 - Yeah, Shane and Kim Jack.
01:16:22 - There's my first.
01:16:23 - So how about this?
01:16:24 Let's do, give me your top six quarterbacks in the NFL,
01:16:27 and then we'll delete one of them.
01:16:29 - Okay.
01:16:30 - And we'll put it on the graphics of one fan base
01:16:31 will get really angry at you.
01:16:32 - Oh, okay.
01:16:33 - And we won't tell you which one.
01:16:34 - Okay, all right, so delete Mahomes.
01:16:36 - No, no, no, we won't tell you.
01:16:38 - All right, Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow,
01:16:41 Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, and man,
01:16:45 it's hard to not have Aaron Rodgers on this list
01:16:47 even after last year, but I will go with Lamar Jackson.
01:16:49 - Okay, so you are a believer in Aaron Rodgers this year
01:16:51 because we had a discussion,
01:16:52 Hank and PFT think Deshaun Watson's gonna have
01:16:54 a better year than Aaron Rodgers.
01:16:56 - I didn't necessarily say that.
01:16:57 I don't think.
01:16:58 - I think that's exactly what you guys said.
01:16:59 - I might have said, I forget, I say a lot of things.
01:17:00 - I think that was the exact bet.
01:17:02 - I just think that it's always more difficult
01:17:06 than you think to just transfer
01:17:07 into a brand new organization.
01:17:09 - But he brought all his guys.
01:17:10 - And think that everything is gonna be the same.
01:17:11 - I got sucked in by Hart Knox.
01:17:13 Like this may not be like a vintage Hart Knox season.
01:17:16 (laughing)
01:17:18 - No, I know, me too, I'm now a full on believer.
01:17:20 - You know, like it's such a ridiculous
01:17:22 and like oversimplified way of analyzing football,
01:17:25 but it's like, yeah, he just seems so enthused
01:17:26 and happy again, right?
01:17:28 But it makes me think more and more
01:17:31 that while Aaron Rodgers got that extension
01:17:33 a couple of years ago in Green Bay
01:17:34 and like played nice for an extra year or two,
01:17:36 like he wanted out and like this has energized him
01:17:40 in a way that could legitimately impact
01:17:43 the product on the field.
01:17:44 So if the Jets can protect Aaron Rodgers, they'll be fine.
01:17:46 - Yeah, I also think-- - That's a big if though.
01:17:48 - It is a huge if. - They don't look great.
01:17:49 - 'Cause he goes from Green Bay,
01:17:50 which is maybe the best offensive line in football,
01:17:52 or at least one of the three best offensive lines
01:17:55 in football to the Jets, who like there's like
01:17:59 one fifth of the offensive line
01:18:00 I feel definitely really good about.
01:18:01 - Oh, give us top five offensive lines.
01:18:03 - Ooh. - That's good.
01:18:04 There's important Eagles.
01:18:05 - Eagles number one.
01:18:07 I will go with Packers, Chiefs, Cowboys, and--
01:18:12 - Ooh, ooh, ooh.
01:18:13 - Trying to think of-- - Lions?
01:18:16 - Ooh, Lions, good one.
01:18:17 Yes, thank you for answering that for me.
01:18:18 Lions right there in the mix as well.
01:18:20 Browns would be another one that I would consider.
01:18:23 Not to get too football nerdy here,
01:18:26 but there's like an epidemic right now
01:18:28 of offensive line depth.
01:18:30 That was one of the biggest things that I remember.
01:18:32 During preseason, I'm like, holy,
01:18:34 you're one injury away from a serious problem
01:18:38 arising right now.
01:18:39 - Yeah, yeah. - Why do you think that is?
01:18:40 - I mean, there are people who feel like
01:18:43 the influence of the spread offense in college
01:18:45 has led to these offensive linemen are playing--
01:18:47 - Candy-ass. - Yeah, I mean,
01:18:48 they're playing from a two-point stance
01:18:50 every single snap, right?
01:18:51 And the habits, this is, some of my scouting buddies
01:18:55 will talk about how there are offensive linemen
01:18:57 that we draft, and the first thing we have to do
01:18:59 before we can train them in our system
01:19:01 is untrain them in their system.
01:19:03 - Right. - Right, it's like
01:19:03 a two-step process where the development period
01:19:06 is a lot longer, and we've never had more inpatient GMs,
01:19:10 or owners, really, in the NFL that you whiff
01:19:14 on a third-round pick, and it's like
01:19:16 you're held accountable in a way
01:19:17 that you probably weren't a decade ago.
01:19:19 - And it also, that's interesting, because it does,
01:19:23 my answer for the AFC is basically
01:19:26 whichever seven teams are gonna be the healthiest,
01:19:28 and I know that sounds very reductive, and no duh.
01:19:31 - Yeah, but that's the answer. - But it's so loaded
01:19:33 that it's like whichever team can basically avoid
01:19:36 the huge injury bug of this list of 11, 12 teams
01:19:40 that you could say have a legitimate chance
01:19:43 will be the teams. - Yeah, and there's
01:19:45 like three teams, maybe, in the AFC that I'm like,
01:19:47 I have a really tough path.
01:19:49 I think like Houston is gonna be a really tough path
01:19:52 to get to the playoffs, Indy's gonna be
01:19:53 a really tough path to get to the playoffs.
01:19:55 Maybe, I'm not there with the Raiders, right?
01:19:57 Like sort of a weird, they're in this weird,
01:20:00 not quite an identity crisis right now as a franchise,
01:20:03 but they spent a quarter of a billion dollars a year ago,
01:20:07 and then this offseason, it was like trading away players
01:20:10 like Derrick Waller, and sort of like keeping the band
01:20:13 back together, and trading away, or cutting Derrick Carr.
01:20:16 I don't know that on paper I think they're a much better
01:20:18 team than they were last year when they were whatever,
01:20:19 six and 11, so other than those three,
01:20:22 I think every other team is kind of telling itself
01:20:24 right now, like yeah, we plan to make the playoffs this year.
01:20:27 - What about one guy I'm very excited about?
01:20:29 This might just be from watching too much,
01:20:31 too many YouTube videos on watch out for this guy,
01:20:34 he's gonna be the biggest weapon that you don't see coming,
01:20:36 and Justin Ross on the Chiefs.
01:20:38 Like they basically got what should have been
01:20:40 a first round pick, and they got him for nothing.
01:20:42 And I just saw one highlight where the Chiefs tweeted out
01:20:45 like you just got Rossed, and he looks unstoppable.
01:20:48 And with him and Patrick Mahomes together,
01:20:50 I feel like that's gonna be,
01:20:51 he's gonna be a touchdown machine.
01:20:53 - Fantasy Brain in me has spent like way too much time
01:20:55 this offseason talking himself into every Chiefs
01:20:57 wide receiver, right?
01:20:58 Like you could put the least talented receiver in the NFL
01:21:00 in the Chiefs, and I'd be like top 25 outcome.
01:21:02 Like upside is there, right?
01:21:03 Like you have Mahomes, you got a chance, right?
01:21:06 But dude, like Justin Ross in college,
01:21:07 his freshman year was like one of the best players
01:21:10 in the country, he had some really scary neck issues
01:21:13 during college which kept him off the field for a while,
01:21:15 and that was part of the reason why he went undrafted.
01:21:16 But like finished off his college career on a high note,
01:21:19 and definitely has like some of the unteachable stuff,
01:21:23 like size and speed.
01:21:24 I'm trying to like sort of,
01:21:29 probably the biggest thing that's allowed me
01:21:30 to contain the hype is just that like last year
01:21:32 they didn't have a dominant receiver,
01:21:34 and Mahomes still had the NFL in passing yards.
01:21:35 So I'm like, yeah, Mahomes, like Justin Ross
01:21:37 could be a healthy scratch, or he could like not be
01:21:39 on the team in week three, and they'll probably still
01:21:41 average 32 points per game.
01:21:42 - System wide receivers.
01:21:44 - Pretty much.
01:21:44 - I think it's a benefit of, I'm gonna think
01:21:46 that he's John Ross, who I still believe in.
01:21:48 - He's so fast. - Yeah.
01:21:49 - So fast.
01:21:50 - I know, when he retired, I think that was like
01:21:51 a month ago, I was like, that took a little piece
01:21:53 out of my heart.
01:21:54 - Yeah, it's like what the hell, that guy,
01:21:55 how'd he fail, he was so fast.
01:21:57 - And like now watching these college football players
01:21:59 like getting ready for the 2024 draft already,
01:22:02 I'm already, like I'm gonna fall,
01:22:04 like there are certain things that are just
01:22:06 incredibly difficult to not be totally like enamored by.
01:22:10 And like a guy who can run a four,
01:22:11 like there's always a soft spot in my heart
01:22:13 for a four-two guy.
01:22:14 - John Ross, different.
01:22:16 - Yes. - Different.
01:22:17 Let's talk about somebody you don't really
01:22:18 spend that much time on on ESPN,
01:22:20 Hank's favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys.
01:22:22 - Yeah, I know, yeah, big year for them.
01:22:23 - You guys don't really discuss them that much,
01:22:25 they're flying under the radar a little bit.
01:22:27 - It's so funny you say that, like so I've been,
01:22:28 so I spent, so Laura Rutledge, the host of NFL Live,
01:22:31 was on maternity leave for the summer,
01:22:32 so I spent four months sitting in for her,
01:22:34 and I'm not exaggerating, like,
01:22:37 it's just like part of the calculus, right?
01:22:39 Like it's-- - It makes sense.
01:22:40 - It would be production negligence to not talk about them.
01:22:43 - People get mad at us when we talk about LeBron,
01:22:45 it's like, but people wanna hear about LeBron.
01:22:47 - Oh, they wanna hear about him, yeah.
01:22:48 - It's just a fact.
01:22:49 - We find a way, so we find a way every day,
01:22:51 it's like, and I'm telling you that the numbers
01:22:54 would bear out, that if you did an extremely
01:22:57 nuanced conversation about, hey, I think the Vikings,
01:23:02 front seven's really looking strong this year,
01:23:05 and you broke down each player individually,
01:23:06 and then it was like, will Dak improve or regress this year?
01:23:09 (laughing)
01:23:10 - Does Dak suck?
01:23:11 - I saw Dak throw left-handed this year,
01:23:13 and he's like, we'll do that for seven minutes,
01:23:15 I know he'll probably do better.
01:23:15 - That's a good segment, let's talk about does Dak suck?
01:23:17 - No, Dak doesn't suck.
01:23:18 - I think he sucks. - No, he sucks.
01:23:19 - He sucks. - He sucks.
01:23:20 - Come on, you guys are going way too far.
01:23:21 - Dak Prescott sucks, he sucks.
01:23:23 - He is a byproduct of the star in his helmet.
01:23:26 I'm a big, you know what, I've become like--
01:23:29 - He got beat up at Panama City Beach on spring break,
01:23:32 he sucks.
01:23:33 - That was probably the point that we knew,
01:23:34 is a little bit of a question about his future.
01:23:36 No, I'm a Dak, I am a Dak guy.
01:23:39 - What does that mean?
01:23:40 - What does that mean, yeah, I mean like--
01:23:41 - Like seriously, what does that mean?
01:23:42 - You know what's funny, it's a good question.
01:23:44 All right, so here's the answer, is that like,
01:23:46 I feel like so much, the NFL's not like the NBA,
01:23:49 where I feel like the NBA,
01:23:50 so much of our interest is the off-season, right?
01:23:52 Like we're just as, like, James Harden's next team
01:23:56 is just as interesting as what he's doing
01:23:59 that current season, right?
01:24:01 I feel like with the NFL, it's really not the case,
01:24:05 except for when it comes to quarterback futures, right?
01:24:08 It's like going into this season,
01:24:10 like every year three quarterback, it's like,
01:24:12 hey, Mac Jones is in ball out this year,
01:24:14 like are the Patriots in the,
01:24:16 could they be a Caleb Williams team next year?
01:24:18 It's like, they haven't played a game yet.
01:24:19 Justin Fields, if the Bears have two first round picks,
01:24:22 like could they be the team, right?
01:24:24 They have that fifth year option
01:24:25 that you have to pick up after this year.
01:24:26 So quarterback's the only spot where I feel like,
01:24:29 a quarterback's future is a 365 day topic for us,
01:24:32 even in the heat of like, hey, it's week seven,
01:24:34 we're coming off of an epic Monday night game.
01:24:37 So I keep, I think where I am predisposed to think about
01:24:39 is like, even if you're trading for,
01:24:41 like the Cowboys are not trading for Trey Lance
01:24:43 to replace Dak Prescott next off season, right?
01:24:45 Like they're gonna keep Dak around.
01:24:47 And by the way, at some point I expect Dak to sign
01:24:49 like a pretty unbelievable extension,
01:24:52 like probably $50 million or more per year.
01:24:55 And it's gonna like, you know, the internet's gonna hate it.
01:24:57 - It sucks, it sucks, dude.
01:24:58 - No, I'm a Dak guy.
01:24:59 - I wish I was a shitty quarterback.
01:25:00 - I'm a Dak guy.
01:25:01 I think that like, this will be a bounce back Dak season.
01:25:06 - A bounce back Dak season, right to quote.
01:25:08 All right, so give us the seven NFC teams.
01:25:13 Probably in a weird way, as hard as it is with the AFC,
01:25:16 it might be harder for the NFC.
01:25:16 - Yeah, 'cause you have to find seven, right?
01:25:17 - You have to find, yeah, dig for those six and seven.
01:25:20 - Division winners, Eagles.
01:25:22 NFC Norris, I don't like.
01:25:23 I picked the Vikings previously and I like,
01:25:25 I couldn't like, could not warm up to that pick
01:25:29 that strongly, but Eagles, Vikings, Saints,
01:25:32 I feel good about that one.
01:25:33 And then Fortiniters.
01:25:34 Seahawks make it back this year.
01:25:36 Cowboys, Lions for the seventh.
01:25:38 - Okay, all right.
01:25:39 Lions get it.
01:25:40 So Giants out.
01:25:41 - Yeah.
01:25:42 - But interesting.
01:25:43 - But like, they're gonna be better than they were,
01:25:44 like a more talented team than they were last year.
01:25:46 But you go back to last season and there's very few things
01:25:49 that you can like, definitely count on year over year
01:25:51 in the NFL.
01:25:52 One thing you can count on is like, close game luck
01:25:54 will not persist.
01:25:55 - Yeah.
01:25:56 - Which is one of the reasons why the Vikings
01:25:58 are like, a close call, even after going 13 and four.
01:26:00 But was it every game except for two last year
01:26:03 was a one score game in the fourth quarter.
01:26:05 - Yeah.
01:26:06 - 11 and oh, I think.
01:26:07 - If you win a lot of close games
01:26:09 and you do it consistently,
01:26:10 wouldn't you say like, Brian Dable has something to do
01:26:12 with that, they're doing the small things correctly.
01:26:15 - Definitely.
01:26:16 - To make the ball bounce their way.
01:26:16 I know you can't control like, fumble luck.
01:26:19 That's one of our favorite things to look up.
01:26:20 - Yeah.
01:26:21 - Is fumble luck.
01:26:21 - There are like, certain places in sports where I buy that.
01:26:23 It was like, Chris Paul, in a prior,
01:26:25 like a prior iteration of Chris Paul.
01:26:27 Like, his teams were always great in like, clutch time.
01:26:30 Like, you know, plus minus or whatever.
01:26:33 But like, there are very few like, teams
01:26:35 that I think have shown themselves capable
01:26:37 of keeping it up year over year.
01:26:38 Even the Chiefs, a couple years ago,
01:26:40 like, I think it was the year after like,
01:26:42 the Mahomes breakout.
01:26:43 Maybe it was the second year.
01:26:44 I mean, Mahomes is so ridiculous that every year feels
01:26:46 like a little bit like, more of a breakout.
01:26:48 But they started the season like, three and four.
01:26:50 Because it was like, after winning every close game.
01:26:53 No, it was Mahomes' second season.
01:26:54 They like, they didn't cover,
01:26:56 but they won like, 12 straight to end the season.
01:26:58 But they covered one of those 12.
01:27:00 And then the following year, they started three and four.
01:27:02 It's just like, hard to, the Braiders are this,
01:27:04 the evidence of this last year.
01:27:05 The Vikings will be evidence of this this year.
01:27:07 But going from 13 to four, to like, 10 and seven is still,
01:27:11 probably good enough to make the playoffs.
01:27:12 - Yeah, could do it.
01:27:13 - So, yeah, it's, the Giants definitely had
01:27:17 some fourth quarter favor last year
01:27:18 that is difficult to replicate.
01:27:21 - You're talking about the officials
01:27:22 in the Commander's Giants game.
01:27:23 - Potentially.
01:27:24 You said it, not me.
01:27:25 - Bullshit.
01:27:26 - I know.
01:27:26 Was that Monday Night Football?
01:27:27 Sunday Night Football.
01:27:28 - That was such bullshit.
01:27:29 - I remember that being disappointed.
01:27:30 - Terry McLaurin lining up,
01:27:31 the judge throwing a flag on him,
01:27:32 even though he checked.
01:27:33 That was bad.

01:29:49 And now here's more Field Yates.
01:29:50 - Vibes are high right now with your commanders though.
01:29:54 - They are.
01:29:54 - Extremely high.
01:29:55 - I've been telling people we have the system.
01:29:57 We have Patrick Mahomes' system now.
01:29:59 - Yeah, we do.
01:29:59 Also, usually when a quarterback goes in the fifth round
01:30:03 and we're talking ourselves into him,
01:30:04 I'm kind of like, he still went in the fifth round, right?
01:30:07 Like it's still like, it probably happened for a reason.
01:30:09 - You didn't see Stephen Chay's mock draft
01:30:10 the way too early one.
01:30:11 - Yeah, no.
01:30:12 - Where he had Sam Howell number one overall.
01:30:13 - I was starting to,
01:30:15 for something I'm working on right now at ESPN,
01:30:17 I started to look back at,
01:30:18 because I was looking at some stuff for this upcoming year.
01:30:21 And you're looking back at the first mock drafts
01:30:24 from prior years.
01:30:25 And it's just a reminder of how much can change
01:30:27 from year to year.
01:30:28 And I saw Sam Howell.
01:30:29 - Yeah.
01:30:30 - Like number one overall.
01:30:31 And North Carolina's, I mean, beyond Drake May,
01:30:35 they've got two receivers.
01:30:36 They're loaded this year in skill position players
01:30:38 on offense, but they went,
01:30:39 they had that baby drought during Sam Howell's final year
01:30:42 at North Carolina that I think maybe the NFL
01:30:45 overthought it on Sam Howell.
01:30:46 - Yeah, if you were to redraft Sam Howell right now.
01:30:48 - Amongst the second year quarterbacks?
01:30:51 - Yeah.
01:30:52 - So it's Kenny Pickett, Malik Willis, Sam Howell,
01:30:54 and who am I forgetting?
01:30:56 I'm sure there's somebody.
01:30:56 Oh, Brock Purdy, Bailey Zappi.
01:31:00 - Matt Corral.
01:31:01 - Matt Corral, yeah, still in the mix.
01:31:03 Yeah, I think, well, Kenny Pickett will be one.
01:31:06 And then I think it would be a,
01:31:07 I think Sam Howell will be two.
01:31:09 - There we go.
01:31:10 - There we go, so we're already moving up the board.
01:31:11 - Maybe moved up to a second round pick.
01:31:12 - Oh, you know what, I got a fan,
01:31:13 Fort Nairs fans, I'm sure, throw with that.
01:31:14 Yeah, it's a Brock Purdy, Sam Howell conversation.
01:31:17 Brock Purdy's gonna be a fascinating player this year too,
01:31:19 because don't wanna take away from a kid
01:31:21 who helped them win a ton of games last year,
01:31:22 but that is as brilliant of a coaching system
01:31:26 as there is right now.
01:31:26 - He's got expectations now for him, yeah.
01:31:28 - Yeah, I loved going back to preseason.
01:31:31 I think it was the final Fort Nairs preseason game.
01:31:34 Brock Purdy threw a four yard out to Brandon Ayoub,
01:31:38 who ran 47 yards for a touchdown.
01:31:40 - Yeah.
01:31:42 - Football aggregators have definitely taken over
01:31:44 Twitter these days, right?
01:31:45 - Yes, yes.
01:31:46 - And one of them just took the clip from the NFL
01:31:49 and just posted it, all caps, Brock Purdy.
01:31:51 - Yeah.
01:31:52 - Respect.
01:31:53 - Yeah, Brock Purdy.
01:31:54 - I respect the dedication to Brock Purdy loyalty.
01:31:56 - Do you think that John Lynch and Kyle Shannon
01:31:58 should be fired for drafting Trey Lance?
01:32:00 - I think I'm gonna have to side with Will on that one.
01:32:02 - Yeah.
01:32:03 - Yeah, you know, you could go through every NFL GM,
01:32:06 every head coach, and find several flaws.
01:32:09 I think that, it was a bad pick,
01:32:13 obviously it was a major whiff,
01:32:15 they should have stuck to their guns, which,
01:32:17 I truly feel like the internet persuaded them.
01:32:21 - Really?
01:32:22 - When they made that trade,
01:32:23 that trade was made in like March.
01:32:25 - Yeah.
01:32:26 - Which you don't see a lot of trades
01:32:27 made that early before the draft,
01:32:28 a lot of them are day of the draft,
01:32:30 or even the Bears trade with the Panthers last year
01:32:32 was fairly early, that was I think
01:32:33 the Friday before free agency.
01:32:35 Usually it's the days or the hours leading up to the draft,
01:32:40 they made that trade in March.
01:32:42 And at that point, we all knew Trevor was going one,
01:32:44 but it was probably leaning heavily towards that going two,
01:32:48 but there was still some question mark
01:32:49 about who the 49ers would have at their disposal
01:32:52 at pick three, and Shaftey,
01:32:54 who of course is dialed in as anybody,
01:32:56 was like, "Yeah, the intention is to take Mac Jones."
01:32:59 And then, that had, I don't know,
01:33:01 maybe a week's worth of momentum,
01:33:02 and everybody was like,
01:33:03 "How could you take Mac Jones third overall?"
01:33:05 Even though he had just thrown for like 5,000 yards,
01:33:07 let out, they went into a perfect season,
01:33:09 and was absurd.
01:33:10 And then it became the upside of Trey Lance.
01:33:15 My football buddies talk about this all the time.
01:33:16 Whenever they're in meetings,
01:33:18 when they're talking about players on a different team,
01:33:21 they can always talk themselves into the upside of a guy
01:33:23 more so than they can their own team.
01:33:24 - Right, right.
01:33:25 - And this guy, we're sitting here examining,
01:33:28 he got cut, he's on the waiver wire today,
01:33:29 the upside's kind of intriguing.
01:33:31 It's like, dude, he got cut from the worst team's defense
01:33:33 in the NFL.
01:33:34 The upside probably is what it is.
01:33:36 The upside is, you claim him,
01:33:38 and then he's cut in two weeks.
01:33:40 - People think they can fix a problem.
01:33:42 - Of course.
01:33:43 - Right.
01:33:44 - I used to, I mean, not that, you love Jay.
01:33:46 So I used to talk about this with Jay Cutler all the time,
01:33:48 is that coaches are built with a certain,
01:33:51 and I say this in a way of admiration,
01:33:54 they have an arrogance about them,
01:33:55 which is part of the reason why they're successful.
01:33:57 Jay Cutler was the litmus test for that,
01:33:59 because Jay was so talented,
01:34:02 but hadn't experienced a ton of team success,
01:34:05 but every coach who coached him was like,
01:34:06 this guy can be, I can make this guy great.
01:34:09 Our team can be great with him.
01:34:10 And by the way, Adam Gase was rewarded for that
01:34:13 in Miami that year when he got him out of retirement
01:34:15 and helped him win a lot of games.
01:34:18 But that's, I think, the case often with quarterbacks,
01:34:20 is you see, you don't bother with quite as much
01:34:23 of the downside as you do by being enamored by the upside.
01:34:26 And I don't know what the future is for Trey, Trey Lance,
01:34:29 but when you factor in being the Cowboys backup
01:34:32 for at least this year, and probably next as well,
01:34:35 that's gonna be five full seasons, basically,
01:34:38 if not playing football.
01:34:39 - Not playing football, yeah.
01:34:39 - How can you expect that guy to be, like, in 2019?
01:34:43 - Actually six, 'cause he only played one game
01:34:45 in the COVID year.
01:34:46 - Four for the NFL and one for college.
01:34:48 They had that Central Arkansas game
01:34:49 in his final year at North Dakota State.
01:34:51 And you're like, so five full years,
01:34:55 and is anybody gonna be, unless Dak gets hurt
01:34:58 and Trey plays, now that we talked about him glowingly,
01:35:02 is Trey gonna have a market to become a starter in 2025?
01:35:07 - There will be a coach that's like--
01:35:09 - Someone will dislike--
01:35:10 - Trey Lance, he was picked, what, third overall?
01:35:12 I'd fall for that all the time.
01:35:13 - I mean, even the Cowboys trading for him,
01:35:14 I was like, of the teams that I had thought about,
01:35:17 I put zero seconds of effort into the Cowboys.
01:35:19 Like, I never, like, I had all the same usual suspects
01:35:23 as everybody else, right?
01:35:23 Like, would the Bucs do it?
01:35:25 Would the Vikings do it?
01:35:26 Would the teams that have a question mark after this year,
01:35:29 would they consider doing it?
01:35:31 And the Cowboys never registered for me.
01:35:33 - Yeah.
01:35:35 This is a tough question, but you're a smart guy.
01:35:38 What's the next zag on in the NFL?
01:35:41 Like, we've seen it, you know,
01:35:43 obviously passing is king now.
01:35:45 Now you've seen a lot of teams play cover too,
01:35:47 and we had that whole discussion.
01:35:49 Oh, can Mahomes beat this, like, you know,
01:35:51 Dinkin' Duncan down the field?
01:35:53 What's the next thing you see coming,
01:35:55 whether it be defense or offense,
01:35:57 that teams are gonna start to do?
01:35:58 - I think we're seeing this, like,
01:35:59 the Giants are probably the best example of it right now,
01:36:01 with, like, the approach they have,
01:36:03 but positionless defense, baby.
01:36:05 Let's go.
01:36:05 - Oh, okay.
01:36:06 - Amoeba, right?
01:36:07 - Yeah, the amoeba defense.
01:36:08 - I like that.
01:36:09 - Special.
01:36:10 - But, so the Giants made a trade in the preseason
01:36:14 for Isaiah Simmons, who, you guys remember from Clemson.
01:36:17 I mean, freak.
01:36:18 I remember I was at the Combine the year
01:36:20 that he was coming out, and it was, like, jaw-dropping.
01:36:22 Everybody was talking about him and only him
01:36:24 amongst the 250 guys that were there,
01:36:27 and you're like, it doesn't matter where he plays,
01:36:29 he's gonna be insane.
01:36:30 - Right.
01:36:31 - And instead, he goes to the Cardinals,
01:36:33 and the problem was that he was, like,
01:36:35 never good enough anywhere to ever stick,
01:36:37 so that's why he got traded for, you know,
01:36:39 a seventh-round pick.
01:36:40 But Wink Martindale, their defensive coordinator,
01:36:43 is just crazy enough to do, like, just be like,
01:36:45 you know what?
01:36:46 He's played safety, linebacker, slot corner,
01:36:50 he's gonna be a nose tackle for us.
01:36:51 And next thing you know, he's gonna have, like,
01:36:53 you know, eight sacks, and make, you know,
01:36:54 like, make the Pro Bowl, we're all gonna go,
01:36:56 Wink friggin' Martindale.
01:36:57 So, but we're seeing more and more of that now.
01:36:59 Like, I remember being at the Senior Bowl this past year
01:37:02 and seeing, like, 220-pound linebackers,
01:37:05 or, like, these defensive ends who look wiry,
01:37:07 but they can, like, they're just unblockable
01:37:09 for these tackles that aren't
01:37:11 Trenton Williams-type athletes.
01:37:12 So, that could be one that we could see more of.
01:37:15 - I like that answer.
01:37:15 - There's a kid from Iowa,
01:37:17 Cooper Dejean, the defensive back,
01:37:19 who's, like, ball hawk.
01:37:21 I don't know if he's a safety, corner, linebacker
01:37:24 in the NFL, but just finds the ball.
01:37:26 And, like, we're seeing, I think we're, like,
01:37:28 that's one example of many of the defensive players
01:37:30 in this upcoming draft that are gonna be, like,
01:37:33 more and more in vogue these days in the NFL.
01:37:35 - Okay, I love that.
01:37:36 I remember the Steelers with their zone blitz,
01:37:37 'cause they used to drop James Harrison
01:37:39 back into coverage sometimes.
01:37:40 - Yeah, dude, James could do it all.
01:37:41 - He was a monster.
01:37:42 - Also, the only person, like, that,
01:37:44 I think the only person that trains harder
01:37:46 after they retired than--
01:37:47 - Yeah, yeah.
01:37:48 - Terrifying.
01:37:49 - Makes no sense to me.
01:37:50 - Well, J.J. Watt now.
01:37:52 - J.J.
01:37:53 - Yeah, he's definitely--
01:37:53 - He's in a lot of those 16-ounce curls.
01:37:55 (laughing)
01:37:56 - Drink those Guinnesses.
01:37:57 What about on the offensive side?
01:37:59 - I just, like, the NFL is due
01:38:02 to pay, like, more of a tight-end tax.
01:38:04 Like, one of the things that I will never understand,
01:38:06 and I think he would certainly have a leg to stand on
01:38:10 if he decided to make this his fight,
01:38:12 Travis Kelce would be, like,
01:38:13 the 27th highest-paid wide receiver,
01:38:16 if you just made him a wide receiver right now.
01:38:18 - Right.
01:38:18 - Like, it's absurd that a guy who,
01:38:20 how many wide receivers are you right now,
01:38:22 unquestionably, taking over Travis Kelce for this season?
01:38:25 Like, you could trade Travis Kelce--
01:38:27 - Three, maybe?
01:38:28 - Yeah, like, maybe it's Jefferson, James, Chase.
01:38:31 And, like-- - TJ Moore.
01:38:32 - Maybe Tyreek.
01:38:33 - Maybe.
01:38:34 - Have a conversation. - I mean, the Chiefs
01:38:35 decided not to. - Yeah, have a conversation.
01:38:36 Yeah, seriously, right?
01:38:37 Like, the Chiefs kept, you know,
01:38:37 they kept Travis Kelce,
01:38:39 but, like, you could make a conversation
01:38:41 around, like, maybe three or four of them.
01:38:42 He makes, like, half of what Tyreek Hill makes.
01:38:45 - Yeah.
01:38:46 - And it's hard, you know, there's only,
01:38:47 there's obviously only so many of these good tight ends,
01:38:49 but we're due for, like, a little bit of a tight-end tax
01:38:51 because there are guys, like,
01:38:53 Brock Bowers from Georgia this year is gonna be a problem.
01:38:55 Like, there's some legit college prospects
01:38:58 that give me some hope that the tight-end spot
01:39:00 can get closer in line.
01:39:03 It was why when the running back and everybody,
01:39:05 like, that was, like, a great June to early July conversation
01:39:10 was running back markets and how we need to, like,
01:39:12 fix the system. - Mm-hmm.
01:39:13 - Right, like-- - You can't really
01:39:14 fix the system. - Yeah.
01:39:15 - The way that it's set up, it's like--
01:39:16 - My buddies in the league would just--
01:39:18 - The GMs are doing-- - They were just like,
01:39:20 you guys are, like, what a waste of your time.
01:39:22 You guys are the biggest fucking idiots
01:39:23 talking about the system. - Yeah.
01:39:24 - Like, it's never gonna happen.
01:39:26 Like, we're not gonna undo the CBA
01:39:29 to, like, just correct-- - Pay running backs.
01:39:30 - You can't do it-- - You can't do it--
01:39:31 - Yeah, mid-CBA. - What's--
01:39:33 - Next time we can talk about something different
01:39:35 with a franchise tag, you can do it.
01:39:36 - Sure, if you wanna talk about that
01:39:37 and apply it to all positions, that's fine.
01:39:38 - Yeah. - But, like,
01:39:39 people are saying, like, you know,
01:39:40 running backs should deserve,
01:39:41 they deserve the chance to renegotiate
01:39:43 as soon as after one season.
01:39:44 Like, Patrick Mahomes should deserve to negotiate
01:39:48 after one game. - Right.
01:39:49 - That's, like, if we're just gonna bend the rules, right?
01:39:51 - Right. - Like, that should be
01:39:52 how it is, so.
01:39:53 - Ooh, I like that, though.
01:39:55 - After one game? - All contracts
01:39:57 are game by game?
01:39:58 - That could be-- - Yeah.
01:39:59 - Complicating, but good. - Yeah.
01:40:01 - Yeah, salary cap managers everywhere would love that,
01:40:03 right? - They had a bad game.
01:40:04 - I have no idea how the draft works in this respect,
01:40:07 but if you're a top running back--
01:40:08 - Yeah. - Coming out of college--
01:40:09 - Yep. - And you just,
01:40:10 maybe it's after your junior year,
01:40:12 you don't declare for the draft
01:40:14 until after the draft's over, and then--
01:40:16 - Go for the supplemental draft?
01:40:17 - Yeah, go for the supplemental draft,
01:40:18 or, I don't know, is there a way that you can
01:40:20 get that supplemental draft pick used on you,
01:40:24 and then the contract's gonna be different,
01:40:25 so you hit free agency a little bit faster?
01:40:27 I don't know. - Bad idea.
01:40:28 There's, yeah, there are some ways to game the system.
01:40:30 Like, probably your best bet would be fake an injury,
01:40:33 'cause you'd become a-- - I'll be good at that.
01:40:34 - Like an undrafted free agent.
01:40:36 - Yeah, I'd be awesome at that.
01:40:37 - Undrafted free agents are eligible
01:40:38 to extend after two seasons,
01:40:39 so you could be up to something here.
01:40:41 - You just gotta, you gotta eat shit for two years,
01:40:43 but then you get that big contract--
01:40:45 - Who do you think, it's a different year this year,
01:40:47 but who do you think's, and it's early,
01:40:49 but do we have any, like, the best back
01:40:51 in college football right now?
01:40:52 - Braylon Allen. - Braylon Allen
01:40:53 probably is on the short list, right?
01:40:54 - The kid from Notre Dame, pretty damn good.
01:40:57 - He looked pretty damn good, week one, week zero.
01:40:59 Will Shipley from Clemson's gonna be a really good player.
01:41:03 The back from Arkansas, Rocket was his last name right now,
01:41:05 he's gonna be a good player,
01:41:06 but maybe one of them has to have the gumption.
01:41:09 Like, bowl game, like, during media availability,
01:41:13 you just get up there and just crumple on stage.
01:41:15 - Twisting and walking up the steps, yeah.
01:41:16 - It's gotta be more than that,
01:41:18 and then you're out for, I'm at 18-month recovery.
01:41:21 You're not gonna have me until, like,
01:41:22 maybe the following year.
01:41:24 - Okay, so-- - And then instead,
01:41:25 be good, like Kevin Nash-style,
01:41:28 after the draft, I'm good. - I'm good.
01:41:30 - Who's taking me? - Yeah, who wants me?
01:41:31 - Two years from now, I'm extension eligible.
01:41:33 - All right, since-- - We're figuring this out.
01:41:34 - I like it, since we're talking dumb rules.
01:41:36 - Yeah. - So we're gonna run this
01:41:38 the Tuesday or Wednesday after Labor Day,
01:41:40 but this is, as we're taping it, cut day.
01:41:43 - Yep.
01:41:44 - What if you just didn't cut anyone?
01:41:47 Would the NFL stop you?
01:41:50 - If you're like, "Nah, we're just gonna have 65 guys."
01:41:52 - We're just gonna keep 'em all?
01:41:53 Yeah, I think that might be--
01:41:54 - Someone should call their bluff.
01:41:55 - I actually don't know what, 'cause, like--
01:41:56 - Yeah. - You have to be
01:41:58 roster and cap compliant every day.
01:42:00 Yeah, the NFL says that, but I don't know
01:42:01 what the repercussions are.
01:42:02 - Yeah, right. - Is there a guy
01:42:03 that checks that?
01:42:04 - Yeah, like, every day, there is someone
01:42:05 who is, like, with a fine-tooth comb
01:42:07 going through and being like, "Do you have,
01:42:09 "during the offseason, 90 or fewer players?
01:42:11 "Are you under the salary cap?"
01:42:12 - See, yeah. - And this offseason,
01:42:14 like, the Chiefs have been dancing with, like,
01:42:18 there was a time where the Chiefs, a couple years ago,
01:42:19 and this is what happens when you have a lot of good players,
01:42:21 they had $141 left in salary caps.
01:42:24 - That's awesome. - 141!
01:42:26 - They're like the drill tweet with their budget.
01:42:27 - Yes, and so, and, like, somebody is sitting there,
01:42:30 and it's like, you can't, like, you can't make a move
01:42:33 until you, like, do several other things.
01:42:35 And they ended up, you know, the NFL salary cap
01:42:37 was obviously so, you can manipulate it so much
01:42:39 that they ended up, at one point, with, like,
01:42:40 30 million after that 141 bucks.
01:42:44 - Yeah, the Chiefs, or the Saints have been in cap hell
01:42:46 for, like, five years.
01:42:48 - You know, I feel like this, like, one day I'll,
01:42:50 like, this'll be, like, the hill that I die on,
01:42:52 is that, like, you can do what these,
01:42:54 like, what the Saints do, what the Eagles do,
01:42:57 you just have to keep doing it in perpetuity.
01:42:58 - Yeah, forever. - It's getting off the train
01:43:00 that's really tough. - Right.
01:43:01 - Like, going back to the middle,
01:43:03 which is what the Bucs and the Rams
01:43:04 are both dealing with right now, right?
01:43:06 They went all in, they won a Super Bowl each.
01:43:09 Now the Bucs wanna get back to their approach,
01:43:11 and it's really hard, like, besides Baker Mayfield,
01:43:13 like, they had a very quiet offseason
01:43:15 because they had no resources to work with,
01:43:19 and they wanted to get back
01:43:20 to where they had been prior to that, so.
01:43:22 You can do it, you just have to be committed to it forever.
01:43:26 - Tell one of your guys, just don't cut anyone.
01:43:28 - See what happens. - I just would like
01:43:29 to see what happens. - I feel like that's--
01:43:30 - Are you like a college team,
01:43:31 and you just show up with 90 guys on the first week?
01:43:34 - Yeah. - Like, you have to
01:43:35 duplicate some numbers? - Probably, yeah,
01:43:37 but the NFL, we've seen some of that in the NFL now.
01:43:39 Especially with all the, like, the new number,
01:43:41 like, jersey number changes,
01:43:42 I feel like we're seeing so many,
01:43:43 like, it always cracks me up when, like,
01:43:45 some team, like, unknowingly, like, issues,
01:43:48 I don't know, like, the star wide receiver's jersey number
01:43:50 to, like, an undrafted rookie safety,
01:43:52 and, like, the receiver's like, "Dude, like, I'm 17,
01:43:55 "like, that's my territory."
01:43:57 - That means that guy's gonna get cut.
01:43:58 - Yeah, it's like, "No, dude, like, we promise you
01:44:00 "it's not gonna be an issue in, like, two weeks."
01:44:02 - Yeah, Teddy Bridgewater wearing 50.
01:44:04 - Ugly. - Yeah, terrible.
01:44:05 - But he said he's like, "I'm just gonna get another number
01:44:07 "if I make the team."
01:44:08 - I mean, sure, but they couldn't, like,
01:44:10 was there nothing else available?
01:44:12 - I don't know. - Like, was there nothing
01:44:13 between one and 19 that they couldn't double issue?
01:44:15 - What's to stop an owner from just, like,
01:44:17 writing extra checks or sending Venmos to guys?
01:44:20 - Wasn't there always the Dirk Nowitzki theory?
01:44:22 - Yeah. - Like, he started
01:44:23 taking a bunch of, like, you know, he took, like,
01:44:25 the, I think the last, or one of his last deals
01:44:27 with the Mavs was, like, I don't know, a third of his market?
01:44:31 - Yeah, it's like, "Hey, listen, we can't give you
01:44:33 "a big contract because of the salary cap."
01:44:35 - Right, yeah. - "But I can Venmo you
01:44:37 "$50,000 every three days."
01:44:39 - You have a very rich owner now, for the Commanders,
01:44:41 this could be it. - Yeah, go cheat.
01:44:43 I'm all about cheating, like, just do it.
01:44:45 - You should just work on handshakes first.
01:44:47 - Yeah, well, Joe Buck set 'em up.
01:44:50 If I go like that, Field, what do you do?
01:44:52 - Oh, you're coming, you're reaching in, like,
01:44:53 "Hey, let's go." - Yeah, yeah, exactly.
01:44:54 - I will say this, though. - Joe Buck's a piece of shit.
01:44:56 He should be ashamed of himself.
01:44:57 - And I remember, like, it was one of those moments
01:44:58 where you're watching it, and, like, definitely,
01:45:02 you guys can imagine, I spent a lot of time on Twitter,
01:45:04 but, like, that was one of those moments
01:45:06 where I was, like, I was not watching,
01:45:07 I was just watching the game, like, not on social media.
01:45:09 I was like, that, like, that happened.
01:45:13 Like, that happened, right? - Yeah, that did happen.
01:45:14 - I need to get to Twitter.
01:45:15 I figured one of you guys would have this covered,
01:45:17 and it was like, you know, within moments,
01:45:18 you're like, "Oh, all right."
01:45:19 The entire, like, I didn't, like,
01:45:21 that actually did happen here, so.
01:45:22 - So, to me, I think that that was a masterstroke
01:45:25 by Josh Harris to deflect any conversation
01:45:27 about the fact that he was wearing a burgundy polo shirt
01:45:30 that did not have the name Commanders on it.
01:45:33 Because I think he might be changing the name.
01:45:36 He didn't want to be on camera
01:45:37 and have everybody talking about,
01:45:38 "Oh, they're changing the name.
01:45:39 "That's why he's not showing it."
01:45:40 So, I'll just do this weird, awkward handshake,
01:45:43 and I'll laugh at myself,
01:45:44 and people will talk about that instead.
01:45:45 - I'm big time, I'm football team all the way through
01:45:47 when they do change it.
01:45:48 - Football team's good.
01:45:49 Football team, that was a magical season.
01:45:50 - Yeah, it just, it grew on me very quickly.
01:45:52 - It just makes sense.
01:45:53 - It was uncomfortable for a little while,
01:45:55 and then it, like, it totally--
01:45:56 - We play football.
01:45:57 We don't need a cartoon bird telling us to cheer.
01:46:00 We're a fucking football team.
01:46:01 - Yeah, yeah.
01:46:02 - I just sort of, just felt like it all,
01:46:05 like, it all worked.
01:46:06 - Okay, so you said the Ravens, that you're high on them.
01:46:08 What are the other teams that you're high on
01:46:10 that NFC or AFC?
01:46:12 Field Yates is stamping approval of, like,
01:46:15 watch out for these guys.
01:46:15 - I think the Seahawks are gonna be really good this year.
01:46:17 - Really?
01:46:18 - Yeah, their offense, I mean,
01:46:19 Jackson Smith and Jigby getting hurt in the preseason
01:46:20 wasn't perfect, but I was talking earlier
01:46:22 about how there's, like, no offensive line depth.
01:46:24 The Seahawks are one of those few teams
01:46:25 that actually has, like, a formidable first five,
01:46:28 and, like, a little bit of depth, too.
01:46:30 So, they could be really good this year,
01:46:32 and obviously, Geno is gonna be the pendulum for them.
01:46:35 But, like, I thought that what he did last year
01:46:37 was, as I've thought about it more and more,
01:46:40 I started to wonder, like, was he just, like,
01:46:42 was some, not all, but was some of the first decade
01:46:45 of his career more circumstance than it was ability?
01:46:48 - Yeah.
01:46:49 - Right, like, if I were a backup quarterback,
01:46:50 I don't think I would've signed to be Eli Manning's backup.
01:46:52 I know that he did snap the streak eventually,
01:46:54 but it's like, what do you get, like,
01:46:56 Eli Manning's back, he never misses time.
01:46:58 He never missed a game due to injury in his career, right?
01:47:01 Like, that, to me, feels like the wrong place to wind up.
01:47:04 And then, going to Seattle was the same thing,
01:47:06 up until, I think it was, like,
01:47:08 the second to last season was Seattle.
01:47:10 Russ never missed a game due to injury.
01:47:12 He got that thumb injury off of Aaron Donald's helmet.
01:47:14 You're like, yeah, this would, like,
01:47:16 that would be the last place I'd wanna go,
01:47:18 except for the fact that it's probably great job security.
01:47:20 - Right.
01:47:21 - 'Cause, like, he just kept getting re-signed
01:47:22 to a one-year deal in Seattle.
01:47:24 But, I'm more in than out, like,
01:47:25 accuracy is quantifiable in the sense of, like,
01:47:28 completion percentage, but I think there's also, like,
01:47:30 a different side to it, and, like,
01:47:32 Geno, his ball placement is, like,
01:47:35 some of the very best in the NFL.
01:47:36 He was absurd last year.
01:47:37 - It's very funny, too, that Russell Wilson
01:47:40 leaves the Seahawks, and then their offensive line
01:47:42 gets amazing, 'cause for a long time,
01:47:44 the knock against how Seattle was building the roster
01:47:46 was, like, they just get fat tight ends,
01:47:48 and they just put whoever in, like,
01:47:50 Tom Cable would build an offensive line
01:47:52 out of duct tape and string, be like,
01:47:54 here you go, Russ, go out there, make it work.
01:47:56 - They, and they sometimes did.
01:47:58 Russ also, I'd like not to dictate the offensive lineman
01:48:00 off the hook.
01:48:01 I feel like with those quarterbacks, like,
01:48:03 the only downside to the super athletic quarterbacks,
01:48:06 I think, is that we don't, like,
01:48:08 parse out sacks as, like, an offensive line
01:48:10 or a quarterback issue.
01:48:11 It's always the offensive line, right?
01:48:13 No one says, like, the quarterback allowed 62 sacks
01:48:16 last year, it's like the offensive line did,
01:48:17 and it's, like, for as great as the mobility can be,
01:48:20 it also, like--
01:48:21 - He'd run into some.
01:48:21 - Yeah, you'd be like, all right, you know, like,
01:48:24 might've just, like, thrown the ball away
01:48:25 and been fine there.
01:48:26 Like, second and 10's okay.
01:48:27 Sometimes better than second and 21, so.
01:48:30 That was part of it, but yeah,
01:48:31 it was a much different approach for Seattle this past year.
01:48:33 - Yeah, Pete Prisco will always tell you,
01:48:35 Russ just, like, runs out of clean pockets all the time.
01:48:38 - Yeah, it's a--
01:48:39 - He watches the film.
01:48:40 - Yeah.
01:48:41 - Do you watch the film?
01:48:42 - I probably not am on Pete's level, but--
01:48:44 - Yeah, Pete's a--
01:48:45 - No one watches the film like Pete.
01:48:47 - He's like Clockwork Orange in his office,
01:48:49 just tapes his eyes open.
01:48:51 - More of the, with some of the stuff
01:48:52 that I'm gonna be doing now more at ESPN,
01:48:54 more on the college film than the pro film,
01:48:55 because, you know, obviously on Sundays,
01:48:57 I have to work and then I'm watching all,
01:48:59 as many of the games live as we can.
01:49:01 We have a great setup that allows us to watch all the games.
01:49:03 - Do you get to watch with Chris Berman?
01:49:05 - One of the coolest things over the past few years,
01:49:07 so the past few years, ESPN's had
01:49:11 Southern NFL Countdown from New York City,
01:49:13 but there are a few shows that still emanate out of Bristol.
01:49:16 Our Spanish football now on Sunday mornings is on ESPN2,
01:49:19 and then Prime Time, which has been reborn
01:49:22 over the past few years, has been on ESPN+,
01:49:25 but in Bristol, so Boom and I got to sit next to each other
01:49:29 for the past three years.
01:49:30 - Oh, that's awesome.
01:49:31 - And it went from probably 50 people in the room
01:49:33 to, in a post-COVID world, maybe 12 or 16 of us,
01:49:38 and so I'm like, Boom, who,
01:49:41 everything you'd imagine it would be, and more.
01:49:46 - Can't believe it.
01:49:47 - Still walks in with his briefcase,
01:49:48 he's got several different newspapers,
01:49:50 you know, he's like, yeah, I comb,
01:49:52 you know, he's a Connecticut guy,
01:49:53 so I comb the globe, I comb the time,
01:49:54 he's got everything, he's digested all of his information,
01:49:58 he's got all the lines ready,
01:50:00 you know, he's got the entire Ivy League
01:50:01 rundown from Saturday, you know.
01:50:03 - How'd Brown do, Boom?
01:50:04 - Tough, like, tough one for the boys yesterday,
01:50:06 but, you know, we're bouncing back, and he's the best.
01:50:08 - That's awesome.
01:50:09 - I mean, you guys, I don't need to tell you guys
01:50:11 how great he is by now.
01:50:12 - Yeah, 'cause he let out a little, whoop,
01:50:13 every now and then when he's watching.
01:50:14 - The best is, you know, when something happens
01:50:17 that, like, involves, like, with Damon,
01:50:19 would he be in the room, so if there's something
01:50:21 Jets-related, like, you know, just goes,
01:50:22 nods, Boog is in the room, Booger McFarlane,
01:50:24 like, he just got his certain teams.
01:50:26 Lions, like, Lions has always been a big one for Boom,
01:50:29 he's always had a special place in his heart for the Lions,
01:50:31 but they've been so good recently that,
01:50:33 didn't Jair tell you that, like, the best pass
01:50:36 of his career was the touchdown to him
01:50:37 on Rousey-Brown, you remember the game?
01:50:38 - Yeah.
01:50:39 - That moment, Boom, like, couldn't contain himself.
01:50:42 He's like, I just, "Lions!"
01:50:44 - That's awesome.
01:50:45 - For, like, 30 straight seconds, right,
01:50:47 just, like, getting up and walking around,
01:50:48 and, yeah, he's the best.
01:50:50 - He owes us a Brock and roll all night
01:50:52 and purdy every day.
01:50:53 - Oh, yeah.
01:50:54 - Just remind him of that.
01:50:55 - He, him works for me.
01:50:56 Him workshopping a nickname for me, like,
01:50:59 was, like, in front of my, at the time,
01:51:00 girlfriend and now wife, she was like,
01:51:03 "Did that just happen right there?"
01:51:04 - Yeah, yes.
01:51:05 - Field of Dreams Yates, I'm sure.
01:51:07 - Strawberry Fields Forever.
01:51:09 - Oh.
01:51:10 - Yeah, all right, that would be him.
01:51:11 - You could do Field Yates of Hell.
01:51:12 - Yeah, that would work.
01:51:13 - Like, you could do TJ Yates.
01:51:14 - Yeah, yeah.
01:51:15 - We get, that happens often now.
01:51:16 Like, I've gotten to know TJ mostly because
01:51:19 the internet has asked us, like, has thought we were,
01:51:22 really, I was going, I went down for something
01:51:26 in New York recently and I got in the car from,
01:51:28 they had a car service from ESPN and, MBD, MBD,
01:51:32 but it was pretty sweet and he was like,
01:51:34 "Yeah, so, like, how's your post-playing career treating you?"
01:51:38 (laughing)
01:51:39 I was like, I don't know what you're referring to.
01:51:41 He's like, "Yeah, weren't you in league for a few years?"
01:51:43 And I was like, "Oh, yeah, you know, like,"
01:51:44 I thought he was, I was like, "That's a pretty, like,
01:51:47 "good knowledge of, like, my background
01:51:48 "working for the Chiefs."
01:51:50 And he was like, "No, like, didn't you play for,
01:51:53 "like, Houston for a couple, like, a couple seasons?"
01:51:55 And I was like, "Oh, okay, I think you've, like,
01:51:57 "gravely mistaken me," but I immediately texted TJ,
01:51:59 who's now coaching, who's coaching for the Falcons now,
01:52:01 who's doing a great job, and we've become friendly
01:52:04 because of that reason, so there was, for a while,
01:52:06 there was, like, a cross-section of the internet
01:52:08 thought we were related, and probably some people
01:52:09 probably still do. - Yeah, I think we should
01:52:10 just keep that, that thought going.
01:52:11 - Yeah, let's keep it going. - I'm good with it, yeah.
01:52:13 The more successful, he's got, like, a couple cousins now
01:52:15 who are playing college football, like, so the Yates family.
01:52:17 - You have a couple cousins.
01:52:18 - I have a couple cousins, that's correct, yes.
01:52:19 - They're playing college football, yes.
01:52:20 - A couple of us, yeah, so there's some Yates out there
01:52:22 that have some athletic ability, and then there's D3 me.
01:52:25 - Yeah, what position did you play?
01:52:27 - I was a safety, yeah.
01:52:28 - Oh, what was your game like?
01:52:30 - Bad.
01:52:31 I started one game, I played two seasons,
01:52:32 I played two seasons of football and four seasons of lacrosse.
01:52:34 I think I had, like, maybe one start combined.
01:52:36 - Oh, no wonder Belichick loved you.
01:52:38 - Yeah, well, lacrosse?
01:52:39 - Yeah, lacrosse, yeah.
01:52:42 You're like, "I'm a football player, but really, lacrosse."
01:52:43 He's like, "Oh, I gotta get this guy."
01:52:45 - I say people, like, people are like,
01:52:46 "Yeah, so, like, tell us about your lacrosse career."
01:52:47 I'm like, you know, I was a great teammate.
01:52:50 - Yeah, that's right, blue guy.
01:52:52 - Made a lot of good friends, you know?
01:52:54 I spent the day out here in Chicago
01:52:56 with one of my college teammates, you know?
01:52:57 Like, I'm like, it didn't matter how many starts
01:52:59 I did or didn't have, you know?
01:53:01 It's more like, would this relationship exist
01:53:03 if I hadn't played lacrosse with you, right?
01:53:05 - This is the embodiment of the Belichick meme
01:53:07 from the combine, where he's got the lacrosse players.
01:53:09 He hears about you.
01:53:10 - This fucking guy?
01:53:11 - I can work with this guy.
01:53:11 - Hell yes.
01:53:13 - Safety and special teams players, I tell people.
01:53:15 'Cause when you say special teams,
01:53:16 no one can, like, really check the box store on you.
01:53:19 Big time core special teams.
01:53:20 - Yes.
01:53:21 - So, yeah.
01:53:22 - I have one last question.
01:53:23 I think PFT has a couple last ones, too.
01:53:25 But the rollback question, rhoback.com,
01:53:27 promo code take.
01:53:28 - No one's--
01:53:29 - 20% off, you're wearing it right now.
01:53:31 - Always, yeah, every day.
01:53:31 - Looks great, Q-Zips, polos, hoodies, joggers,
01:53:34 shorts, everything.
01:53:35 - They're the best.
01:53:36 - Well, this has been great having you on.
01:53:37 You now have to be a recurring guest more often.
01:53:41 But we do have to ask a fantasy football question.
01:53:44 - If you must.
01:53:45 - You are a fantasy football guru,
01:53:46 although it sounds like you're gonna be a draft guy now.
01:53:48 - We'll do some draft now in the future, too.
01:53:50 - Okay.
01:53:51 - Which will be exciting, yeah.
01:53:51 - Beautiful, congratulations.
01:53:52 - Looking forward to that, thank you.
01:53:53 - Yeah, yeah.
01:53:54 - Squeeze out Todd McShay, no big deal.
01:53:55 - Ah, jeez.
01:53:57 - I mean, he's our friend.
01:53:58 - He's the best.
01:53:58 - Yeah, well--
01:53:59 - I love Todd.
01:54:00 Why are you coming for his job, then?
01:54:01 - Yeah, you--
01:54:02 - They didn't say that, you said that.
01:54:03 - He's the best, but you pushed him out.
01:54:04 - Todd and I did a show together for several years.
01:54:06 He is, I love Todd.
01:54:07 He, for both Massachusetts guys, we go way back.
01:54:09 - He's, Todd is the best.
01:54:11 All right, so, fantasy sleepers?
01:54:14 - You know, I feel like when we did this with Florio
01:54:15 a couple years ago, this was the one fantasy question
01:54:17 you asked.
01:54:18 - I'm not, yeah.
01:54:19 - All right, so give me like a 15 second,
01:54:20 just like, the reality of sleepers is that like,
01:54:23 if you're listening to this show,
01:54:24 you probably know most of the names that people consider.
01:54:27 - I do not.
01:54:28 - You don't think so?
01:54:29 - Nope.
01:54:29 - All right, all right, I'll try a couple here.
01:54:30 - Say some names and we'll tell you the teams.
01:54:32 - So like, when I consider a sleeper, it's like,
01:54:33 all right, hey, like, 12th round and beyond
01:54:36 in your fantasy draft, everything in the 12th round
01:54:38 and beyond, it was like, that's a sleeper.
01:54:40 - That's when I go to auto draft.
01:54:41 - Right, so yeah, so like, Jordan Addison,
01:54:43 who I know you guys know, he's a first round pick, right?
01:54:45 But like, he's going like, way too late in drafts right now.
01:54:48 - Very fast.
01:54:49 - Zay Flowers from the Ravens as well.
01:54:52 Matt Collins for the Falcons, like, who was good last year
01:54:55 and has like, become this like, sort of hidden gem
01:54:57 of a character for the NFL these days.
01:54:59 Like, he'll be more productive, like,
01:55:01 the Falcons wide receiver core is too thin
01:55:03 for him to not have a legitimate role there.
01:55:05 Lajimore for the Browns.
01:55:07 And then, with running backs, you have to find
01:55:10 the running back room that you're not totally positive
01:55:13 that the starter is gonna keep his job for the full season.
01:55:16 So like, I think Alexander Madison's gonna be a good player
01:55:19 for the Vikings, but until he's shown it
01:55:21 for like, an extended period, there's like,
01:55:24 the non-zero chance that Ty Chandler,
01:55:26 the drafts that a couple years ago had at UNC,
01:55:28 is gonna be, eventually become the starter.
01:55:31 Roshon Johnson for the Bears, right?
01:55:32 Like, Herbert looked good in the preseason, Kaleo Herbert.
01:55:35 Deontay Foreman was a good player
01:55:38 for the Panthers last year, but like,
01:55:39 would you be totally surprised if Roshon
01:55:42 like, had a real role at some point?
01:55:43 - I like this, this is some good strategy.
01:55:45 - Yeah, but like, you know, all the other,
01:55:46 like, all the starting running backs are known, right?
01:55:49 So you have to find the guys that just are one,
01:55:54 not even, everyone's an injury away from being useful,
01:55:56 but like, one sort of slump away from being--
01:55:59 - Fumble, yeah. - Yeah, and then,
01:56:02 you know, Kenny Pickett was once a quarterback sleeper,
01:56:04 but I think he's generated too much steam in the preseason.
01:56:06 - What about Gibbs up in Detroit?
01:56:08 - Yeah, he's going so high in fantasy drafts now
01:56:10 that like, people are just all in.
01:56:11 - Is Bichon going in like, the first round?
01:56:13 - First round. - Jesus.
01:56:15 - I bet people who are listening right now
01:56:16 saw Bichon go first overall, because in fantasy--
01:56:18 - No! - Definitely.
01:56:20 Fantasy, we like things that we know,
01:56:22 and we like things that are shiny objects.
01:56:24 Mahomes, best player in the world.
01:56:25 He's going like, 13th in fantasy.
01:56:27 - I do two quarterback league, though, that rules.
01:56:29 - Okay, so he deserves to go, right?
01:56:30 But like, when there are like, the variance
01:56:33 between like, Patrick Mahomes over the course of the season
01:56:36 and like, the 15th best quarterback
01:56:39 is not nearly as significant as the variance
01:56:41 from whether it's Christian McAfee or Austin Echo
01:56:44 at the top of the running back ranks,
01:56:45 and the 15th best running back.
01:56:46 Like, at the end of the season, you're gonna be like,
01:56:48 wait, like, how was, you know, whatever.
01:56:51 Like, Pierre Thomas, who's been retired for seven years,
01:56:53 the 15th best running back in fantasy this season.
01:56:55 So, quarterbacks tend to go earlier because of name value,
01:56:58 and Jameer Gibbs, who is awesome,
01:57:00 and like, in fantasy, I think one of the traps
01:57:04 that people fall into sometimes is like,
01:57:06 just wanting to not be last, which is, you know,
01:57:09 it sucks to be last, but like--
01:57:11 - I didn't fall into that trap for a baseball league.
01:57:13 - So I've heard, yeah.
01:57:14 I listened.
01:57:17 - Not even close.
01:57:18 - But like, in fantasy--
01:57:18 - Whoa, you listened to that?
01:57:19 Holy fuck, Field.
01:57:20 - I get a lot of time.
01:57:21 - Jesus Christ, dude.
01:57:22 - Lot of walks in the morning.
01:57:23 - That was torture.
01:57:24 - You live in this city.
01:57:25 - You just love city.
01:57:25 - They're playing Dinger's only draft
01:57:28 in Guantanamo right now.
01:57:29 - I'm impressed.
01:57:30 - Yeah.
01:57:31 - But, the, like, playing for like, fourth or fifth,
01:57:35 like, that's fine, like, fourth or fifth is respectable,
01:57:37 and like, no one's gonna, like, comment on you
01:57:38 positively or negatively, but like,
01:57:40 Jameer Gibbs is the kind of player that like,
01:57:42 I don't think he's just gonna be average.
01:57:44 Like, I think he's either gonna be,
01:57:46 like, holy crap, why did the Lions use a 12th overall pick
01:57:49 on a guy and then not use him that much,
01:57:52 or he's gonna be Alvin Kamara 2.0.
01:57:53 - Right.
01:57:54 - Right, and you're gonna be like, holy crap,
01:57:55 like, this guy, like, Kamara is a rookie,
01:57:57 had 13 touchdowns, 81 catches, like, he was absurd.
01:58:00 Took a little time to get there,
01:58:02 but from week six or seven on, his rookie season,
01:58:05 was like, the best running back in fantasy.
01:58:07 And I feel like Jameer Gibbs, especially with
01:58:09 no Jamison Williams the first six weeks,
01:58:11 like, after Amonra Saint-Brown, that's it.
01:58:15 - Yeah.
01:58:15 - Amonra moved up in my rankings after he came on PMT,
01:58:17 by the way.
01:58:18 - Dude, he is a serious dude.
01:58:20 - Is he the most alpha dude in the entire NFL?
01:58:22 - When I told him I was a Bears fan,
01:58:24 I thought he was gonna jump the table.
01:58:25 - Yeah, he--
01:58:26 - It was crazy.
01:58:27 - I texted a couple of my buddies at the Lions after that,
01:58:29 I was like, I gotta be honest with you, I was like,
01:58:32 I don't like when people react, overreact too much
01:58:34 to just stuff they hear or see in the media,
01:58:36 like I do with hard knocks sometimes, but I'm like,
01:58:39 I think I'm ready to run through a brick wall for Amonra.
01:58:42 - It's sad that he's got every team that passed on him,
01:58:44 and who they drafted, memorized.
01:58:45 - 16 receivers, like, he's the biggest dog
01:58:47 in the entire locker room.
01:58:48 - Yeah, dog. - This guy's an absolute beast.
01:58:50 - Yes.
01:58:51 - He's like, he is the son of Mr. Universe,
01:58:54 like, that is what, to a T, he is, literally,
01:58:57 but also embodies what you'd imagine somebody would be
01:59:00 if they pretended their dad was Mr. Universe.
01:59:02 - Yeah, what about for rookie quarterbacks?
01:59:06 - Yeah.
01:59:06 - Are you a stride boy, or are you in braces?
01:59:09 - I'm a stride boy for fantasy.
01:59:10 - Okay. - Because in fantasy football,
01:59:12 you gotta remember how valuable running quarterbacks are.
01:59:14 - Yeah.
01:59:15 - They set this unbelievable floor.
01:59:17 Like, Daniel Jones last year, even in years prior to that,
01:59:20 like, had flashes where he was legit in fantasy.
01:59:24 He played much better last year,
01:59:25 but a big part of the reason why,
01:59:27 like, he's going in drafts higher than, like,
01:59:29 Dak Prescott and Kirk Cousins right now
01:59:31 is that, like, he is a legit Russian quarterback,
01:59:35 and I feel like it's pretty normal for coaches
01:59:38 to spend time talking about how their running,
01:59:41 their quarterbacks are gonna run less.
01:59:42 Like, the Bills, I feel like, for three years
01:59:44 have been telling us, like,
01:59:45 "Yeah, we're gonna protect Josh more,"
01:59:46 and then he just keeps running.
01:59:48 The Giants have sort of alluded to, like,
01:59:49 yeah, like, Daniel running for us is a huge weapon.
01:59:52 - Right.
01:59:53 - So I, like, take that away from an offense
01:59:55 that will be better with Darren Waller
01:59:58 and some receiver investments,
01:59:59 but they're not, you know,
02:00:00 they're certainly not as far as, like,
02:00:02 explosive plays go, like, top five or anything in the NFL.
02:00:05 So, Daniel Jones, way more valuable in fantasy,
02:00:09 even if he takes a step back this year in real life.
02:00:11 - Okay. - Yeah.
02:00:12 - Good answers, good answers.
02:00:13 Well, Phil, this has been awesome.
02:00:15 - It's great, yeah.
02:00:16 - Appreciate you moving your schedule for us.
02:00:18 - What's up, good extra night in Chicago.
02:00:19 - Yeah, I mean, now we got the rapport.
02:00:21 You're gonna come back on.
02:00:22 We can do Zoom next time.
02:00:24 - Yeah, I'm back for the event next year.
02:00:26 - Yeah, but you are,
02:00:27 we'll definitely have you back on during the season.
02:00:29 - Let's do it. - You gave us
02:00:30 some good answers. - You watched the tape.
02:00:31 - You passed the test. - Yeah, passed the test.
02:00:32 - And I didn't know you were, yeah, I mean,
02:00:34 you're watching all the college tape now, too.
02:00:36 - See, that's the only thing about traveling these days,
02:00:39 is, like, usually I don't like to get away
02:00:41 from my family for too long.
02:00:42 It's just, like, the logistics.
02:00:43 We were talking about this,
02:00:44 I'm sure this is riveting for everybody,
02:00:45 but, like, now you get the tape to grind.
02:00:47 Like, I was sitting there in the airport this morning.
02:00:49 - Oh, you're doing the Orlovsky.
02:00:51 - I was sitting there, yeah, trying to pull an Orlovsky.
02:00:52 - Yeah, you're grinding tape instead of jerking off.
02:00:54 Okay, nice.
02:00:56 - Are you allowed to-- - In the middle
02:00:57 of the Hartford Airport, yes.
02:00:58 - Are you allowed to be in a room
02:00:59 with a woman who's not your wife?
02:01:01 - I believe so, yes, that's confirmed.
02:01:02 - You don't have the Mike Pence rules,
02:01:03 the Orlovsky rules? - No, no, don't have
02:01:04 any one of those. - Well, I mean,
02:01:05 Jake probably wants to fuck you right now, so.
02:01:06 - Jake and I, we're gonna,
02:01:07 we're actually gonna hang out and talk through,
02:01:09 I'm telling you, one day Jake will be my boss,
02:01:11 and I have little doubt about that.
02:01:13 I don't know what the sport we'll call together,
02:01:15 but we'll find a way to make something happen.
02:01:17 In a different life, I truly believe I could have had
02:01:20 like a very Jake approach to my career.
02:01:22 I told you guys, I get so proud watching him every time
02:01:25 on the PLL or any of your guys' events,
02:01:27 like it's legitimately cool.
02:01:28 - Yeah, we are proud of Jake.
02:01:30 We have to bust his ball, so he cheats in golf.
02:01:32 - Well, he's too much of an alpha,
02:01:33 so we have to bring him down.
02:01:35 - He came off, he had a good day on the course today.
02:01:36 - Yeah, don't believe it, don't believe it.
02:01:38 - I saw one shot. - That's his vice.
02:01:40 His one vice is just his fake hole-in-ones.
02:01:43 - I'm just jealous of how much him
02:01:44 and Hank can play these days.
02:01:45 - Oh, it's insane. - It's kind of nice.
02:01:46 - Look at Hank, Hank looks like a lobster right now.
02:01:48 - Hank did, he got some color today.
02:01:49 - Guy just got beat up by the sun.
02:01:51 - I wasn't gonna say anything, but he got some good,
02:01:53 I'm jealous of it, I'm envious.
02:01:54 - Jake, did you offer Hank sunscreen today?
02:01:56 I know you brought a lot out.
02:01:58 - You didn't?
02:01:59 Oh, wow.
02:02:00 Oh, man. - Oh, man.
02:02:01 - Brutal.
02:02:03 All right, well, Field, thank you so much, man.
02:02:04 - Thank you, guys.
02:02:05 - Thanks, Field.
02:02:06 (upbeat music)
02:02:11 - At least I didn't get caught kissing
02:02:13 Vicky Butterman's big butt in the woods.
02:02:16 - That's not true, that's not true.
02:02:18 - Well, boys, did I interrupt?
02:02:21 - Mom, you stupid bitch, get out of here!
02:02:24 - Well, pardon me, and pardon my chicken tenders.
02:02:29 (chiming)
02:02:31 (cheering)
02:02:33 - 50, your mom is so cool.
02:02:36 - And she's hot.
02:02:37 She's my stepmom.
02:02:39 - Oh, okay, well, your stepmom is really hot.
02:02:42 - Yeah, she is.
02:02:44 - Yeah!
02:02:45 - Oh, yeah.
02:02:47 - Touchdown!
02:02:53 (cheering)
02:02:55 - My boys love their chicken tenders.
02:03:06 (cheering)
02:03:10 - Part of my cheesesteaks new menu is here.
02:03:12 The Big Cat Combo, Chicken Bacon Ranch Cheesesteaks,
02:03:15 and Chicken Tenders.
02:03:17 - Field Yates was brought to you by Pardon My Cheesesteak,

02:03:57 Jake stole the show, great job, Jake.
02:03:59 - Great effort.
02:04:00 - Great job to the whole team.
02:04:00 - Thank you.
02:04:01 - It was a great shoot, but Jake dressed up as a woman
02:04:04 because Brandon Walker lied about having COVID,
02:04:06 and so Jake admirably raised his hand and said,
02:04:08 "You know what?
02:04:09 "I'll step in, I'll do it."
02:04:11 Many people are saying you look hot, Jake.
02:04:14 I know you saw some of those comments.
02:04:16 - Yeah.
02:04:17 - I saw several woods out there.
02:04:19 - Yeah, Mrs. Positions.
02:04:20 - Mrs. Positions, there we go.
02:04:22 We'll get you a Part of My Cheesesteak.
02:04:24 You can find it at partofmycheesesteak.com,
02:04:25 also on Uber Eats.
02:04:27 - Okay, end of the show.
02:04:31 Max is back.
02:04:32 Max, how was your vacation?
02:04:34 - Vacation was really nice, necessary.
02:04:36 - Yeah, was it?
02:04:37 - 13 days, do you think it was necessary?
02:04:38 - It was not 13 days.
02:04:39 - It was, how many days, count the days.
02:04:41 - We were working--
02:04:43 - Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
02:04:44 - We were working Thursday.
02:04:45 - Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
02:04:48 Sunday, Monday, 11.
02:04:50 - You're counting weekends.
02:04:51 Weekends don't count.
02:04:52 It was five days.
02:04:53 - When did the weekends start, Max?
02:04:55 - Oh, you missed that, did you?
02:04:56 - Yeah, no, that was, no, I backed my guy, Hank,
02:05:00 and sometimes you just gotta let him cook.
02:05:02 - Do you think that Hank let you down
02:05:03 with his Mount Rushmore performance?
02:05:04 Because you guys did lose, the final tally's out,
02:05:07 you guys are gonna have to spend 24 hours
02:05:09 in a box together, in Hank's box, in his sweet, sweet box.
02:05:13 Do you think he let you down?
02:05:14 - No, I mean, I was sending out picks, too.
02:05:17 You didn't take a lot of my picks.
02:05:20 - I let us down, it was bad.
02:05:21 It was a bad end of the summer.
02:05:24 But I'm excited to be in the box.
02:05:25 - Yeah, ready to go to the box.
02:05:27 I'm really good at all of these bets
02:05:30 that we do on this show.
02:05:31 (laughing)
02:05:32 - Well, Max is running away with fingers only.
02:05:34 - Yeah, that's true.
02:05:35 - The one thing that I'm actually good at.
02:05:37 - Wait, so Max--
02:05:38 - The one thing I'm gonna win.
02:05:39 - Are you mad at Hank?
02:05:40 He literally just gave up.
02:05:43 He gave up.
02:05:44 - Win as a team, lose as a team.
02:05:47 We're a team, team, team.
02:05:49 - You won by yourself, and then--
02:05:52 - I know what you're trying to do here.
02:05:53 - I'm not.
02:05:54 You handed the ball to Hank, and he's like,
02:05:55 "I don't wanna play anymore."
02:05:57 - That's not true. - That's not true.
02:05:58 - That is absolutely true.
02:06:00 - The numbers say otherwise.
02:06:01 - Blamed being hungover.
02:06:03 - The Wednesday show, you maybe didn't wanna be there
02:06:05 anymore, but that's fine.
02:06:07 - But you were still alive.
02:06:08 - Well, that's 'cause they were gonna, yeah.
02:06:09 - Yeah. - What?
02:06:10 - We were gonna rig it.
02:06:11 - You were mad about a pre-rig
02:06:13 that we weren't even discussing.
02:06:15 - No. - It's fine.
02:06:16 It is what it is.
02:06:17 I'm a vacation supporter, enthusiast,
02:06:23 whatever you wanna call it.
02:06:25 There's probably some science to the fact
02:06:27 that we took these vacations at the end of the summer,
02:06:29 and the team chemistry just wasn't there.
02:06:31 - Yeah.
02:06:32 - I think there might be something to the fact
02:06:34 that when you don't have the other guy in the studio.
02:06:36 - And Billy left.
02:06:37 - You don't have the background of a guy
02:06:39 having your back immediately.
02:06:40 Like, yeah, good pick, you know?
02:06:42 - Although-- - Although, yeah, Max,
02:06:43 that's a good point.
02:06:44 When Hank was out, you did really well.
02:06:46 - Yeah, and it does feel like the Jerome Bettis pick
02:06:48 was the start of the decline.
02:06:50 - Yeah.
02:06:51 - And you were very adamant that that was a good pick.
02:06:53 - It was a good pick.
02:06:54 - It was a good pick. - It lost you that draft.
02:06:55 - Bad pick. - It lost you that draft.
02:06:57 - What did he win, PFT?
02:06:58 - He won offensive rookie of the year.
02:07:00 I think it was-- - No one cares
02:07:02 about Jerome Bettis on the rank.
02:07:03 - He was also first team all pro big cat as a rookie.
02:07:05 - Old people do.
02:07:06 - As a rookie. - Old, old, old.
02:07:09 - First team all pro. - Old.
02:07:11 - They only choose one of those guys.
02:07:13 - Yeah, that's true.
02:07:15 So it's good to have you back though, Max.
02:07:16 I missed you.
02:07:17 I said that out loud. - Feels good to be back.
02:07:18 - I was like, I miss Max.
02:07:20 I miss having him around.
02:07:21 - I missed you guys.
02:07:22 - And the Phillies and Cubs are on a collision course.
02:07:24 - I know, that would be something.
02:07:26 - Yeah.
02:07:26 - I don't think Jerry knows,
02:07:28 like, Jerry thinks Max likes to titty fuck.
02:07:31 - That's okay.
02:07:32 - I was gonna say that.
02:07:33 I was gonna say that. - We let him go.
02:07:34 Sometimes you gotta let Jerry go.
02:07:36 We let him go.
02:07:37 It was so fucking funny.
02:07:38 Someone said it perfectly.
02:07:39 They're like, "In the year 2023,
02:07:42 Jerry O'Connell did a cranky anchors of Max
02:07:45 and it was awesome."
02:07:46 - Yeah.
02:07:47 I think mostly what it was about was just,
02:07:49 he was mad at you for making him visualize you
02:07:52 titty fucking. - You titty fucking.
02:07:53 - Yeah.
02:07:54 - But I said I don't like it.
02:07:55 - But you still had to talk about,
02:07:56 like, you having a titty fucking session and hating it.
02:07:59 - So-- - Which is also gross.
02:08:00 - Talk me through that, Max.
02:08:01 You're on vacation and you pull up your,
02:08:03 you're not listening to the show
02:08:04 and you pull up your Twitter on Friday morning
02:08:06 and you're like, "What the fuck?"
02:08:07 - So Friday was our big trip.
02:08:09 We went snorkeling.
02:08:10 We went-- - Oh, I'd love to see
02:08:12 you snorkeling. - Nice little
02:08:13 three island snorkeling tour.
02:08:14 It was nice.
02:08:15 - Oh, shit.
02:08:17 - I get back--
02:08:17 - Do they have an extra lifeguard for you?
02:08:19 - I don't know what that means.
02:08:21 - How burned do you think
02:08:22 your back's super burned? - Is your back super burned?
02:08:24 - No, I'm Italian skin, you know?
02:08:26 - Yeah.
02:08:27 - I get--
02:08:28 - You get olive.
02:08:29 - Yeah, I get a little olive.
02:08:30 Although I was worried, whatever.
02:08:32 But yeah, I get back to look at my phone
02:08:35 and I just have 10 texts from my friends
02:08:38 being like, "Oh my God, the titty fucking segment.
02:08:40 "The titty fucking," I was like,
02:08:42 "What could possibly, how could this possibly
02:08:44 "be this big of a topic
02:08:46 "in the fantasy football preview with Jerry?"
02:08:48 Like, that makes no sense to me.
02:08:50 - Well, Jerry gave us a great preview for fantasy football.
02:08:52 He said, "Justin Fields and Darren Waller, no matter what,
02:08:56 "we got neither one of those guys."
02:08:57 - Yeah.
02:08:58 - So we got-- - It just went sideways.
02:08:59 - We got all Bengals. - I don't understand.
02:09:00 - We got all Bengals, so that's good.
02:09:01 - We know he stacked Bengals and I think Jaguars.
02:09:04 - Yep. - Yeah, so.
02:09:06 I mean, he's the best.
02:09:08 We love having Jerry on.
02:09:09 But yeah, I did enjoy seeing you tweet that, Max,
02:09:11 being like, "It's gotta suck to be Max
02:09:13 "on vacation right now."
02:09:15 - It's okay. - Being like,
02:09:16 "Titty fucking."
02:09:16 - It's okay.
02:09:18 - All right, anything else?
02:09:19 Oh, Jake, did you not wanna bring up your Wild
02:09:22 from over the weekend?
02:09:24 Giannis and his brothers?
02:09:25 - Oh yeah, it's on with the team, all three of 'em.
02:09:27 - I love that Giannis was like,
02:09:28 "The Bucs have to do the right thing for me to stay."
02:09:31 And really, he meant just sign all my siblings.
02:09:33 - The Nuggets should do that.
02:09:35 - Yeah. - The Yokish.
02:09:36 - Yeah.
02:09:36 - My fun stat is that we have one more part of my take
02:09:40 until NFL football's back.
02:09:41 - Yes. - Yeah.
02:09:42 That's a fucking awesome stat.
02:09:44 - We made it, boys.
02:09:46 - Not yet, not yet. - We could fucking,
02:09:47 yeah, we could. - Not yet.
02:09:48 - Jimmy Buffett. - Yep, you never know.
02:09:49 - Yeah, we don't want that to happen.
02:09:51 Yeah, also, Jake, sorry, I know that you had
02:09:53 your Yankees big board for free agency.
02:09:56 - Oh yeah.
02:09:57 - Julio Arias was your number one target.
02:09:59 - No, no, no. - So, sorry about that.
02:10:01 - Disavow, disavow.
02:10:02 - I know you wanted him.
02:10:03 You said Domingo Hermann and Julio Arias.
02:10:05 - Yeah. - You're pretty great
02:10:06 on the staff.
02:10:07 You were saying that on Friday.
02:10:09 - But you didn't have to say it on the show.
02:10:11 - Look at Jake, going along with bits.
02:10:13 Way to go, Jake.
02:10:15 - Turn of the corner.
02:10:16 - All right, so the lottery ball machine,
02:10:19 I don't even know when we're getting it,
02:10:20 but I know we're getting the old one shipped to us.
02:10:23 - Sweet. - So we will have that back.
02:10:26 - Did Clemson score 30 more points?
02:10:28 (laughing)
02:10:30 - They lost 28-7.
02:10:31 - I mean, that's bad.
02:10:32 - It's bad.
02:10:33 I feel like a coward for not taking Duke Moneyline.
02:10:35 I hit on that, a little rescue bail me out on Monday night,
02:10:39 but should've gone Moneyline.
02:10:41 - Yeah, I know.
02:10:41 I mean, look at Duke football.
02:10:43 Duke football, back.
02:10:44 Some are saying it's a football school now.
02:10:46 - Yeah, I think it always was.
02:10:48 - Coach K's gonna have to come back and save it.
02:10:49 All right, numbers.
02:10:50 Meems, you ever gotten this?
02:10:52 - Nope. - 18.
02:10:53 - Three.
02:10:55 - One. - 69.
02:10:56 - 77. - 20.
02:10:58 - 30.
02:11:00 - Also, last week I forgot to say
02:11:03 that it was the third birthday of the lottery machine.
02:11:06 - Oh, thank you, Jake.
02:11:07 Very cool.
02:11:07 How could you do that?
02:11:08 How could you do that?
02:11:09 You're never gonna be able to look him in the face.
02:11:10 - I did it last year, so yeah, three years.
02:11:13 - All right, we'll see everyone tomorrow.
02:11:15 Love you guys.
02:11:16 (whooshing)
02:11:18 (whooshing)
02:11:20 (whooshing)
02:11:23 (whooshing)
02:11:25 (whooshing)
02:11:27 (whooshing)
02:11:30 (whooshing)
