Taiwan

Out of body experiences are universal phenomena and in part 2 of the OBE series, The Paranormal Zone further explores how the people in Taiwan, who are generally spiritual and very superstitious, address this topic.

In Taiwan, there is an intriguing case involving a woman named Zhu Xiu Hua. In 1959, when she was in her 40s, Xiu Hua woke up three days after being clinically pronounced dead, in the body of a 20-year-old woman.

The Taiwanese also have a unique ritual that allows people to travel to the spiritual world. It serves several purposes but the most common ones are to visit deceased loved ones and to allow one to visit and refurnish his or her home in the spiritual world for the purpose of changing their luck the present life.

00:00 If you could go anywhere, regardless of any restrictions, no physical limitations whatsoever,
00:07 where would you go? If you could leave your physical body in one place and your soul go
00:16 somewhere else, what would you see?

01:00 To find out more about out-of-body experiences, the team and I travelled to Taiwan to witness
01:06 a unique case of out-of-body experience that took place about 50 years ago.
01:13 In 1959, a lady named Lin Wang Yao, in her 40s, shocked everyone after returning to life
01:22 after she was clinically pronounced dead. She physically looked the same, but became
01:26 a totally different person - a woman named Zhu Xiu Hua. Zhu Xiu Hua is still alive today.
01:33 Unfortunately, I was not successful in trying to locate her and her family. I was told that
01:38 they have relocated to another place and are not willing to be interviewed anymore.
01:43 Nevertheless, we have found traces of a story to be told.
01:50 [Music]
01:57 I'm here at Zhendong Temple in Yunlin District, Taiwan. What brought me here? The story of
02:07 Zhu Xiu Hua and Lin Wang Yao, and how the soul of a 17-year-old entered a lady in her
02:16 40s who was pronounced dead for three days and three nights.
02:23 In 1958, Zhu Xiu Hua's parents sent her away to safety from Kinmen Island they were being
02:32 bombarded. They put her on a boat to Taiwan. Unfortunately, the boat was robbed and everyone,
02:37 including Xiu Hua, was left to die on the boat. It is said that Zhu Xiu Hua's life was
02:42 not meant to have ended. She was just waiting for the right time to take over another body.
02:48 In 1959, my auntie, Lin Wang Yao, had just passed away. Xiu Hua entered the body and
02:55 took it over and my auntie came alive again. I was 14 years old at that time.
03:07 What did you observe personally?
03:14 She became a vegetarian after that and the way she dresses also changed. The accent she
03:20 spoke in changed, not like before.
03:27 The people around Lin Wang Yao noticed a lot of changes in her after she came back to life.
03:35 She could read and write and helped in the family business, which was most bizarre because
03:40 previously she couldn't do all that. This reminds me of a new age concept called walk-in,
03:45 where a person whose original soul has departed receives a new soul. A typical walk-in report
03:52 usually involves someone who is critically injured or clinically dead to suddenly wake
03:57 up living like a completely different person. This new version of the former self may speak
04:03 in an unknown language and identify himself by a different name. Many walk-ins claimed
04:08 heightened psychic sensitivity and may work as spiritual healers.
04:13 After 1959, Lin Wang Yao became Zhu Xiu Hua. In 1971, Zhendong Temple was built and Zhu
04:20 Xiu Hua became the abbot of this temple until today.
04:28 Lin Wang Yao was a committee member of this temple and she provides religious services
04:34 in the temple. At that time, there were many people who came from all over Taiwan to see
04:39 her. She was famous for cleansing the soul and healed spiritual problems. There were
04:44 long queues for her services almost every day.
04:49 Although I cannot find a specific answer about how this happened, but for a fact, we know
04:57 that Zhu Xiu Hua took over the body of Lin Wang Yao and today Lin Wang Yao does not exist
05:04 in terms of her identity. Therefore, is this a case of out-of-body experience where one's
05:13 soul moved over to another body and from there it just took on a new life?
05:25 Rarely anyone can enter the spiritual world.
05:29 Soon after the ritual started, something appeared to me.
05:36 In Zhu Xiu Hua's case, I can tell that the Taiwanese are in general very open-minded
05:51 to incidents that may not have logical explanations. In Taiwan, there's a unique practice called
05:57 Guang Ling Su that allows you to travel to the spiritual world and visit your deceased
06:01 family and friends. Not only that, you can also view yourself from other dimensions.
06:08 What's truly interesting is that you can even make changes there in order to improve your
06:12 present reality.
06:20 I was born with problems of the legs. She walks on crutches since young. We brought
06:46 her to see many doctors but none could help her. Then we started coming here two, three
06:52 months ago and we began to see some improvement.
06:59 The first time I went in, I saw a person wearing blue. He invited me to go in a car, then we
07:04 went to play basketball. When I played basketball with him, I didn't use any crutches.
07:12 Her muscles become softer and more flexible after coming here. She can walk better, so
07:18 we continue to come.
07:25 This temple holds sessions for people to visit the spiritual world twice a week. The sessions
07:30 are normally packed with participants. To participate, everyone has to wear a red eye
07:35 mask to see beyond this world.
07:42 What is the purpose and the significance of this Guan Ling Shu?
07:49 There are four purposes as to why people do this. First, it's for people who would like
07:57 to visit their deceased family and friends, or they have some messages to tell them, or
08:02 it simply means to depart. Secondly, it can bring people who are curious to visit the
08:08 spiritual world, and they can experience firsthand what is happening in heaven and hell. Thirdly,
08:14 you can visit your live garden where males are represented by a tree, and females are
08:19 represented by a flower plant. The tree or flower plant reflects our health in the real
08:24 world. By keeping our live plant healthy in the garden, it will improve our physical well-being.
08:31 And lastly, you can visit your spiritual house that reflects your current situation. The
08:36 furniture and decoration in the house can tell what kind of person you are. By making
08:41 changes in the house, it improves our lives in the real world.
08:48 I've been told that the success rate to enter the spiritual world is actually quite low.
09:02 We're looking at maybe 20 to 30 percent. Is that correct, and why is that so?
09:09 Actually, anyone can enter the spiritual world, but there are people who can't make it at
09:16 the first attempt. However, there are also cases when one can try many times and fail.
09:23 There is, for example, a person who tried to enter with their own physical eyes. It
09:28 wipes your senses to allow you to enter the spiritual world. So children usually can go
09:34 across easily because they are not too dependent on physical body.
09:41 How do you know if it's not the vivid imagination of the participant taking place causing the
09:48 reaction or whether it is something they're really seeing on this trip?
09:57 During the process of visiting the spiritual world, if it is imagination, it must be something
10:03 you have seen before. But most of the time, participants are seeing things that they have
10:07 never seen before. And this is not a hypnosis because in hypnosis, we tend to follow what
10:14 the guide says. But in this case, the participants will tell the guide, "I didn't see what you
10:21 have described. I saw something else."
10:26 What's the foundation or basis for this ritual?
10:31 This ritual can be traced back to the period of Tang Dynasty, and it didn't come from any
10:36 religion. It was a common activity for farmers after their harvest to spend their free time
10:43 participating in this ritual to see what can be improved in their lives. Our teacher, Master
10:49 Lui, found that this is a good ritual for people to understand the other world punishments,
10:55 that they will suffer from doing bad things, and encourages people to do more good deeds.
11:02 Well, the time has come. I'm supposed to stay very focused, free my mind, and yet not fall
11:09 asleep. So I'll see you when I come back.
11:18 (singing)
11:25 During the ritual, the participants raise their hand if they see something, and then
11:37 the facilitator will come next to them and tell them what to do next. Well, being a sceptical
11:44 person, I really didn't expect anything after putting on the eye mask. But soon after the
11:50 ritual started, something appeared to me.
11:53 You know the monks? The monk that wears yellow with the red one, knocking on the thing, walking
12:00 up a hill. They reach like this very, very like old-fashioned kind of like a palace,
12:11 also like a monastery, two stories.
12:15 Please describe the decoration.
12:17 A glass box, with a Buddha inside with like fire at the back. I was very conscious. However,
12:24 I do feel that because there is guidance as to where you go in your spiritual house, there
12:32 is a very fine line between what your mind wants to see versus what is being shown to
12:41 your mind.
12:42 Do you see any special flowers?
12:44 Pink colour, yellow colour, all over the tree.
12:47 What does the tree look like?
12:49 It's very old because the roots are coming out, those marble concrete chairs around,
12:54 then the two trees are in there.
13:01 She's not feeling well from her lower back downwards.
13:05 And she couldn't sleep well at night.
13:09 She has serious migraine.
13:12 The issues that they brought up with regards to my health makes kind of sense because it's
13:16 actually quite true. I did have a slipped disc two weeks ago before coming to Taiwan
13:22 and it affects my legs as well. So the health part makes me think that perhaps this is something
13:29 that can be quite accurate.
13:33 Believe it or not, there are people who come here and their lives change and improve, especially
13:38 when the ordinary solutions did not work. On the other hand, there are those when the
13:42 ritual failed to meet their expectations.
13:46 At first I see some green lights. I saw kind of like tiger or lion and I was playing with
13:53 it because there are a lot of noises in there so it's hard for me to concentrate. But one
14:00 thing I can assure is that the things I just saw is the things I've never seen before.
14:08 I can imagine that this ritual is helpful to the people because if you listen to the
14:14 guidance of the voice from the master, you will start to put things into perspective
14:20 inside the spiritual home of yours. It would give people the element of hope in terms of
14:27 the different aspects of their life that they're living now.
14:33 After I left my body to explore further, I came to a room that made me sad and I didn't
14:38 want to enter. What was inside the room?
14:45 Shio Hua entered the body and took it over and my auntie came alive again.
14:59 The issues that they brought up with regards to my health makes kind of sense because it's
15:06 actually quite true.
15:16 I was a Japanese girl in that life. I was floating on the water with face down. I had
15:24 committed suicide.
15:29 I saw that I own a coffee business. I was thinking it's impossible. I was an employee
15:35 back then.
15:39 After experiencing the trip to the spiritual world, I wanted to understand how travelling
15:44 out of body can heal our physical and psychological ailments.
15:49 Master Liao, a hypnosis expert, has been researching on healing through hypnosis and the trip to
15:54 the spiritual world. I would like to understand more how this process works.
16:01 Basically, the conscious mind stands aside during hypnosis and let the subconscious come
16:07 forward. In our daily life, our subconscious is always blocked by our conscious mind. Sickness
16:13 is actually a message from the body, but most of the time we didn't accept it or solve
16:18 it incorrectly. It would turn to cancer after that. We use hypnosis method to have conversation
16:24 with our sickness, to understand and solve it accordingly.
16:28 I've cured many illnesses using this method. Some patients had been sick for 20 to 30 years.
16:34 They are cured after the hypnosis.
16:47 Can you share with me the relationship between the subconscious mind and out of body experiences?
16:54 They are quite similar. Commonly, when people say your soul travels out of your body, we
17:00 can view the soul as subconscious mind that leaves your body and travels to another dimension.
17:06 But at the same time, your conscious mind remains present.
17:12 In Taiwan, I heard about that trip to the spiritual world, Guang Ling Shu. I tried it.
17:19 I find it interesting because I've never done it before. However, I did some research. Some
17:25 people say it's hypnosis, some people say it's not. What is your opinion?
17:32 I have been researching Guang Ling Shu for more than 10 years. It does help people, but
17:38 if I use the hypnosis method without the religious ritual to bring them to the same dimension,
17:44 the benefits increase and the successful rate of going in is almost 100%.
17:50 For traditional Guang Ling Shu, they will always blame other parties for your problems.
17:56 So you have to burn some offerings to please them. In hypnosis, we found the problems in
18:02 you and you are the one to make the change to solve it.
18:06 I believe, based on what Master Liao has explained, we're looking at a balance between scientific
18:13 or academic theories together with spiritual theories. And that would be the best way for
18:19 us to cultivate the personal responsibility for self-empowerment.
18:24 The hypnosis brought me to a scene like in a movie and one that I was acting in. From
18:30 there, I can see the way I lived before and I realize that it's the fixated habituation
18:36 that caused the same problems. It helps me to see things in perspective and then I made
18:40 a change and living in new thought. My life changed because of that.
18:44 I can make a new choice for my life.
18:48 In Master Liao's method of hypnosis, she leads people to their spiritual house, which
18:57 according to her, represents our subconscious mind, which tells the patient's psychological
19:01 condition immediately. And from there, she guides them to do certain improvements. I
19:06 would really like to experience and compare the differences of this method with the previous
19:11 one.
19:12 How does the house look like?
19:13 It's like a very old Chinese building. It's very wide and has two stories.
19:20 Walking through the door, what can you see?
19:23 A big statue.
19:25 What kind of statue?
19:27 Buddha.
19:29 You come to the entrance of your bedroom. What is the furniture and furnishing?
19:34 White.
19:36 Is it a double bed or single bed?
19:38 Big bed.
19:41 How many pillows are there on the bed?
19:43 Four pillows.
19:45 Switch on the TV. What's playing on the screen?
19:50 My children. My parents.
19:53 Comparing the Guangning Shu ritual with this hypnosis process, the environment was quiet,
19:59 which allowed me to focus more. And finally, it led me to a place where I felt emotions
20:04 and avoided entering.
20:06 There's another room though.
20:08 What room is that?
20:10 It's a dark room.
20:11 Walk into the room. You are safe.
20:14 I'm sad.
20:16 Or you don't feel like going in now? You can decide.
20:22 OK. We don't go in for now.
20:28 Please tell the dark room that when time is right, you will come back and visit it.
20:35 When I passed that dark room, there was a gush of emotions that brought tears to my eyes.
20:42 In all our lives, we all have a dark room.
20:45 A place we keep secrets.
20:48 A place we hide what we are most fearful of.
20:52 In this dark room, I saw that someone I love very much had passed away.
20:59 And that room had a lot of emotions of sadness.
21:03 Something that we would realistically feel.
21:06 So, putting that in mind, I ask, is outer body experience premeditated?
21:14 Or is it really something that happens out of your control?
21:19 Outer body experiences, from what I have learnt,
21:23 it can happen to you naturally, out of the blue, without you knowing.
21:27 Or it could be learnt and managed and controlled through classes.
21:34 Spiritualists will tell you that the pineal gland is at work, opening your third eye.
21:40 Scientists will say that that is possibly true, but there is no absolute scientific evidence.
21:46 Therefore, what do you believe?
21:49 And what do you see? Is it true? Is it real?
21:51 Is it about the future or just your mind playing tricks on you?
21:54 That is the question, isn't it?
21:56 So, like I always say, what we see may not be real and what is real, we may not see.
