In Indonesia, ‘santet’ is a deadly curse put on someone by a rival or enemy. It is a form of black magic that is used to harm another person. Kang Mashrukhan shares with Li Kim in details what ‘santet’ is about. He is an experienced dukun whom many sought to free them from this curse.

Another dukun featured in this episode is Mohd Rizka . He shows Li Kim how a santet is done from the items used to the different stages of the ritual. He attempts to insert an object into the body of a volunteer and retrieve it.

00:00 In the previous season, we covered a story of black magic
00:03 with a girl named Supiati in Yogyakarta.
00:06 She was a victim of one evil black magic spell,
00:11 named Santet.
00:13 This kind of spell can kill you
00:16 or emotionally, physically and mentally traumatise you for a lifetime.
00:21 This story was covered in Yogyakarta.
00:24 So my question is, in this big city of Jakarta,
00:28 do people still practise Santet?
00:30 Who does and why?
00:32 Who suffers and who benefits?
00:34 These are things that people need to know and understand.

01:13 I have learned that one of the most lucrative services
01:16 in the paranormal business is something they call Santet.
01:20 And amongst the various types of Santet,
01:23 the popular one is Ilmu Pelet,
01:26 which is the art of making love potions and spells.
01:29 We meet again with paranormal practitioner Kang Mashrukan,
01:35 who appeared in our previous episode.
01:37 I wanted to understand the perspective of black magic in Jakarta
01:41 and also other aspects of paranormal that may be of interest to all of us.
01:46 Is black magic very common in Indonesia?
01:52 Yes, of course.
01:54 Many practice black magic
01:56 because for them, it's an easy, simple and hassle-free way
02:00 to obtain something they want.
02:02 Many of those who practice black magic have their own reasons.
02:07 Some use the art of Santet to kill
02:09 or to harm someone physically or mentally.
02:13 Some have the ability to control the victim's mental state
02:16 by causing them harm or making them go crazy,
02:20 especially when it concerns romance.
02:22 So, one can use this black magic specifically for such purposes.
02:26 And such art is called Pelet.
02:29 And then there are those who want the power
02:32 to be able to cheat others and obtain their savings.
02:35 Is that how you say it, Ilmu Pelet?
02:39 How does Ilmu Pelet work?
02:42 Even though there are some that cannot be called black magic,
02:45 in actual fact, most of these are black magic.
02:49 They create and force a mental and emotional condition
02:52 that allows one to be influenced with little effort.
02:56 Using spells, a photograph, a lock of hair, a piece of clothing,
03:01 or an article that was used by the person,
03:04 or even a dog to target the victim's heart.
03:08 The resulting effect is that the targeted person
03:11 will not stop thinking of the person who has cast the spell.
03:15 Usually, those who are put under the spell or curse
03:21 will be affected for a long time,
03:24 sometimes forever, unless the victim is cured of the spell,
03:28 or if the victim does not strengthen her faith in God.
03:32 Sometimes, the two shamans, the one who cast the curse,
03:37 and the one fighting it, will battle it out, a spiritual battle.
03:42 We try to cure those who suffer from these black magic curses.
03:46 The shaman who cast the curse on the victim
03:49 will communicate spiritually with us and attack us,
03:52 asking us why we are interfering.
03:55 I have read many articles about clients being taken advantage of and cheated,
04:05 especially in this dark world of black magic, or Santet.
04:09 What I gather is that these Dukuns actually believe
04:12 they have supernatural powers to put a deadly curse on another person.
04:17 I managed to discuss this with Kiprana Lewu, a celebrity spiritualist,
04:22 who told me that he was once a practitioner of black magic.
04:26 I studied the art of Santet much earlier
04:31 because I wanted this power and learned how to use it or fight it.
04:36 There may be those who are cynical,
04:43 but most people, regardless if they are Muslims, Christians, Hindus or Buddhists,
04:49 believe in the supernatural and the unseen.
04:54 Understanding that, from the theory of being able to send a nail and inflict pain on the victim,
05:04 since you understand how to do that and you've done that before,
05:08 now in healing, how do you use the same power but in the reverse?
05:13 For example, if someone in the past had asked me to put a curse on a victim,
05:19 they always make us promise not to reverse the curse.
05:23 If it happens that a victim comes to me to be treated,
05:26 whether or not it was me who put a spell on him,
05:30 it is my obligation to cure him of the curse.
05:33 Therefore, the correct mantras and holy words that we use to neutralise the spell or curse
05:49 is already inherent in the victim's body.
05:52 Why did you change your course of work?
05:55 Why did you stop practising Santet?
05:58 Because I could have peace of mind.
06:03 I have always felt nervous, agitated,
06:06 and I felt I was committing many sins,
06:09 feelings of guilt about hurting others.
06:16 Isn't it better that you improve your faith in whichever corridor of belief that you have?
06:21 God willing, for the Muslims in their prayers,
06:27 this will protect them not only from curses,
06:30 but anything connected to black magic.
06:33 For those of other religions,
06:35 this will also protect them from the curse of the devil.
06:39 So, what is the point of this?
06:41 For those of other religions,
06:44 strengthen your faith and learn more about your own religion.
06:48 Similarly, the victims of black magic will not be given any notice in advance.
06:58 But, black magic being practised from generations before,
07:04 the antidote is similarly from generations before,
07:08 what we always are told, to have faith and spiritual strength.
07:13 Through our contacts in Jakarta,
07:35 we managed to locate a shop that sells the supplies and items
07:40 used by fake dukuns and shamans in their artificial rituals.
07:44 As requested by the owner of the shop,
07:47 the details of the shop, location and owner will not be revealed.
07:52 One of the first items he showed us was the technique of creating smoke
07:56 from a special oil or liquid.
07:59 Another popular item is some medicine.
08:02 Another popular item is some matter which will combust with spectacular effects.
08:08 This oil, for example, can be used in some fake ritual or test
08:13 that when put on your skin, will cause the skin to feel a burning sensation.
08:17 And the particularly sensitive areas are the forehead,
08:21 inner side of the arm and the abdomen.
08:24 This looks familiar, doesn't it?
08:28 The infamous jenglot figurines in various sizes and designs.
08:33 In light of this, it is perplexing that people still believe they are real.
08:37 There are countless cases of people being cheated of their life savings by these charlatans.
08:44 Some have been reported in the media,
08:47 some celebrity dukuns have also been taken to court,
08:50 charged for fraud and given jail terms.
08:53 The public must be informed and wary of these fake and dangerous dukuns.
08:58 One must never be desperate and gullible.
09:01 I am meeting an expert on this matter,
09:04 Dr. Degentara from the Universitas Negeri Jakarta,
09:08 who will explain to me the scientific perspective of the practice and belief in suntan in Indonesia.
09:15 In your profession, lecturing for social sciences,
09:20 you have studied the history and all about there is to know for suntan.
09:26 Can you please tell me how many different types of suntan are there in Indonesia?
09:32 In the traditional form, the effect is direct.
09:37 A shaman who wants to call a jinn, for example,
09:41 without the help of an instrument or without the help of a medium,
09:46 can ask directly to the jinn.
09:49 To inflict harm on someone or to possess the subject,
09:55 to be a mediator.
09:58 Then again, whenever we talk about suntan or black magic,
10:03 the view is always negative.
10:07 But there are also those who use magic for positive purposes.
10:15 In many societies, in respect to suntan,
10:19 it is usually inherited or connected to the traditions and cultures of the ancestors.
10:26 And the phenomena today in Indonesia,
10:31 in 34 provinces, each have their own forms of suntan.
10:36 They are in reverence to their ancestors.
10:40 There are suntan with various types, styles and traditions,
10:45 according to the ancestors.
10:47 Doctor, what's your message or advice to the audience
10:57 about this paradigm shift in mentality,
11:01 which will resultantly change the meaning of suntan from negative to positive?
11:07 In my opinion, those who do not believe, should believe.
11:13 Believe in what?
11:15 To believe in God.
11:17 When we are one with God,
11:19 we will be confident that everything we do brings positivity.
11:23 And we will protect ourselves from negativity,
11:27 and especially if the polarity includes electromagnetic particles
11:32 that are delivered via suntan that can hurt.
11:36 In my religion, I have the ustaz or kai.
11:40 These people cannot be hurt by suntan.
11:43 So, think positively.
11:46 There you have it.
11:52 Suntan itself is nothing but a method.
11:57 Its effect is what you make of it.
12:01 Good begets good, bad begets bad.
12:05 So why not choose good, why not choose positive,
12:09 and change the meaning of suntan altogether?
12:13 When I was interviewing Dr Degentara,
12:18 a colleague of his, Mohd Rizqa Irawan, was also present
12:22 and surprisingly used the same method.
12:26 He used a transference of energy to help soothe Dr Degentara
12:31 who was suffering a coughing bout.
12:33 Subsequently, I decided to ask Mohd Rizqi
12:37 to show me some rituals to determine some matters.
12:41 I am back here at the cemetery in Jerobpurut.
12:48 Tonight, I'll be meeting someone very interesting.
12:51 His name is Mohd Rizqa Irawan.
12:54 He is a lecturer of economics,
12:56 but for this show, I have learned that he is also very learned
13:00 in the practice of suntan from an academic perspective.
13:04 I have spoken to many practitioners of suntan,
13:08 spiritualists who heal people who suffer from suntan.
13:12 But I never fully can be convinced
13:16 about how it works or why it works.
13:19 Tonight, we will be meeting a person
13:23 who has been practicing suntan for over 30 years.
13:27 Tonight, we will see for the first time
13:30 the actual ritual of the practice of suntan
13:34 and most importantly, how it is removed.
13:37 How have you used this gift to heal people, victims of suntan?
13:47 Humans can be hurt by suntan when they are not religious
13:52 but they cannot be hurt if they fill their hearts with positive energy
13:58 which includes godliness, no vengeful thoughts,
14:02 never thinking bad about others, doing good deeds, always thinking positive.
14:07 These are the people who will not be affected by suntan.
14:12 Suntan can be reversed using the power of Mother Nature.
14:17 No need for prayers, no need to use magic.
14:22 Just the power of Mother Nature is enough.
14:26 At this point, I would like to invite Mohamad Rizka Irawan
14:35 to show us the ritual of suntan where an object is sent to a person
14:42 and most importantly, how it is removed.
14:46 After the break, we shall see if Mohamad Rizka Irawan
14:49 can replicate one of the most common practices of suntan called susok
14:54 where he will try to insert a foreign object into another person's skin using black magic.
15:00 We are in the famous haunted cemetery of Jeruk Puroh in Jakarta
15:15 and the perfect place for us to carry out our suntan experiment.
15:19 The experiment, though not scientific, had parameters
15:23 so that we can gauge its authenticity and results.
15:26 We prepared some items ourselves for the experiment
15:29 that included eggs, coconut milk, lemon and charcoal.
15:33 We also selected a human subject.
15:37 I am right now preparing items for this pot under the instructions of Mohamad Rizka
15:48 to prepare for the ritual for the suntan.
15:53 The chicken bones are supposed to attract the entities as part of the ritual.
15:58 This is chicken blood, black chicken.
16:01 Its use is similar to humans in their lives.
16:04 The jinns also have needs and this is for them to drink if they want to.
16:09 This is their food and how they drink or eat this is varied.
16:13 We shall wait for the reaction.
16:15 Staples.
16:23 I use this because it is small.
16:26 We are not very big.
16:32 Give me your hand, your left hand.
16:35 There is energy of a jinn on my right hand.
16:39 I want you to also feel it.
16:41 I feel a sharp pain, a burning pain on my skin coming from his fingers.
16:53 Breathe normally.
16:56 There is nothing but hot energy.
16:58 This proves that something has entered my hands.
17:02 This is a jinn that has come uninvited.
17:05 Maybe from the other world and is not pleased with what we are doing.
17:09 That side is okay.
17:11 He has accepted our offerings.
17:13 I need to take care of that side.
17:15 Wait, give me five minutes.
17:26 Mohd Rizqa immediately began to prepare Mas Rio,
17:29 who volunteered to be the test victim.
17:32 Rizqa ordered him to focus strongly on negative thoughts
17:35 whilst he attempted to open Rio's aura.
17:38 We kept our distance and silence,
17:40 allowing Rizqa to call on the spirits around us.
17:45 [Music]
17:49 [Music]
17:53 [Music]
17:56 [Music]
18:13 [Music]
18:16 We have done what needs to be done.
18:38 There are even offerings made.
18:40 Some bones, some oils that are used for the sun-tat ritual
18:44 in order to open the aura.
18:47 But unsuccessful rituals are usual in this unseen world
18:51 because we can't foresee activities for that side.
18:55 Can you tell us what were the reasons that the sun-tat was unsuccessful?
19:05 There are two obstacles.
19:09 The first one has given us the permission,
19:12 but the second one is not allowing us.
19:15 They are not happy because we are not doing what they want us to do.
19:19 This is why they have prevented us from accomplishing the sun-tat ritual
19:23 to our friend just now.
19:26 In the realm of the supernatural,
19:34 we can never understand or expect what will happen.
19:37 It always changes.
19:39 We can prepare for this at the last minute,
19:42 but there will always be interferences and obstacles.
19:45 Furthermore, I am not a sun-tat shaman.
19:48 But I know and understand sun-tat.
19:55 Let's go down.
19:57 It's not easy to be with the unseen,
20:00 not easy to interact with the jinn or the supernatural.
20:03 This is why even after preparing,
20:05 it is not guaranteed that something will happen.
20:08 Sometimes, it is normal to be unsuccessful in attempting sun-tat.
20:13 Even a real dukun cannot always do sun-tat in one attempt.
20:17 He will have to try many times to break the barrier.
20:21 Riyul, can you tell me what was your experience, step by step?
20:32 From the beginning, Mas Iwan ordered me to have negative thoughts.
20:37 After that, he told me to close my eyes.
20:41 When I did that, everything turned black,
20:44 as if I was going to faint.
20:47 My head felt heavy.
20:49 Then I fainted and became conscious again.
20:53 Nothing happened after that.
20:56 I was told to keep calm
20:58 and was cleansed by Mas Iwan, given coconut water.
21:03 That made me calmer even though before that I was stuttering.
21:07 In the end, I became calm.
21:10 At one point, he was checking you using his hands and everything.
21:23 During that time, he was trying to see if the item had successfully entered your body.
21:31 You felt nothing or did you have some sensation?
21:36 During all that time, I did not feel anything.
21:40 I felt at the moment Mas Iwan opened the aura near my temple
21:45 and I felt the heat.
21:49 As exciting as it would have been
21:52 to be able to witness a ritual of the Santat practice,
21:58 it was unsuccessful.
22:01 I always believe that there is a lesson to be learned in every situation.
22:06 As eager as I was,
22:09 it doesn't change the fact that Santat is powerful.
22:15 It doesn't change the fact that Santat is black magic.
22:19 Black magic is not something you mess around with,
22:23 you experiment with or you check it out.
22:28 As for the disturbances of energies on the right side of the cemetery,
22:34 even that cannot be explained.
22:37 However, if you look at it spiritually, mysteriously,
22:42 it tells us that we should not have done that.
22:46 So, the lesson here is,
22:49 as interesting as it would have been,
22:51 as intriguing as it would have been,
22:54 it was not something to be done.
22:56 And like I always say,
22:58 what we see may not be real and what is real, we may not see.
