01:06 caused a stir in this hospital, Nohidaya in Yogyakarta.

01:25 When this patient arrived, she was barely conscious.

01:32 Both of her legs were badly infected
01:34 and foreign objects were found lodged
01:36 within her shins, heels and feet.
01:39 She later told a doctor that she has been in this condition
01:42 for nearly two years.

01:55 Supiyati was rushed to the intensive care unit
01:58 of Nohidaya Hospital.
02:00 And the medical personnel who attended to her
02:03 decided that surgery must be performed

02:08 to remove objects that looked like nails, needles and pins
02:12 that were inserted into her skin.

02:28 Supiyati received proper medical care at the hospital
02:32 and was treated with great professionalism.
02:34 They ensured that the wounds were attended to with diligence
02:38 but two days after the operation, a strange thing happened.

02:43 Foreign objects like nails and needles
02:45 were found lodged inside her legs again.

02:54 When Supiyati first came to our hospital,
02:57 she was like a child.
02:59 She had no idea what was wrong with her.
03:02 I attended to Supiyati and helped to extract the nails
03:05 from the deep cuts on her legs
03:07 and I couldn't believe what was happening to her.

03:14 When objects like nails reappeared by themselves
03:17 inside Supiyati's legs two days after the operation,
03:20 it puzzled the doctors, especially Dr. Sageran
03:24 who led the medical team in this case.
03:26 His first probable explanation was that Supiyati
03:29 inserted the objects herself.
03:31 But how could it be when the wounds were still bandaged
03:34 and she was partially unconscious all the time?
03:37 From where did she find the nails as they kept reappearing
03:40 each time they were surgically removed?

04:31 and its relationship with spiritual diseases.
04:34 Well, medical science is actually based on science.
04:37 We do not really entertain things that we cannot explain
04:41 in the medical sense.
04:43 Paranormal, abnormal activity, that's when we actually say,
04:48 "Okay, that's beyond our realm."
04:50 Probably then have to pass it to somebody else.
04:53 That somebody else would fall under alternative methods of healing.
04:57 Yes, traditional or it could be a spiritual healer
05:00 or it could be somebody who's, you know,
05:04 more of an expert in such, you know, unexplained phenomena.
05:10 But in the instance of this research that I have done
05:13 on this young lady in Yogyakarta, which then makes me ask...
05:17 So how do we confirm that it's black magic, right?

05:22 Medical science would not be able to explain that.
05:25 So we would have then, you know, we would have examined the patient,
05:29 taken a history, examined the patient,
05:31 maybe observed the patient for a while,
05:33 ultimately come to the conclusion that, yes,
05:37 she's got maybe a hundred or a thousand needles inside.
05:40 Subsequently, they are removed and when they repeat the X-ray,
05:46 they find them again.
05:48 That would be difficult to explain, right?
05:51 So then we would say, "Okay, we do not know what's going on.
05:56 "We cannot explain it.
05:58 "So it's beyond our realm."
06:05 It is quite clear that the medical world will be reluctant
06:08 to offer treatment to a case like that of Supiati
06:11 as it is deemed to be paranormal.
06:13 What did Dr Sageeran of Nohidaya Hospital do to further help Supiati?

06:20 Was she attacked by black magic?
06:31 Strange things like nails, pins, hair started to come out of my body.
06:36 The belief in magic and sorcery are common

06:56 What we are witnessing today in Supiati's case is nothing new,

07:26 with so much strength and tenacity.
07:28 Let's put science aside and just feel and empathise
07:31 with the plight of Supiati.
07:33 A total of 2,399 nails were removed from her body within two years.
07:39 When you started seeing those nails and pins and all that stuff,
07:46 what did you think you were suffering from?
07:48 At first, I felt really sad.
07:51 My family and I actually had a suspicion
07:54 that someone placed a dark spell on me.
07:57 Who or what were you suspecting?
08:00 It was my ex-husband who made me sick.
08:03 He forced me to marry and threatened me many times
08:06 and so three years ago, I did marry him out of fear.
08:09 It started on our wedding day when I fainted and felt ill
08:12 and never got better.
08:14 Three months later, strange things like nails, pins, hair
08:20 started to come out of my body.
08:23 When I was very sick and in great pain,
08:26 he refused to take me for treatment.
08:28 He only brought me to visit one witch doctor.
08:31 He said that if I don't listen to him and follow his instructions,

10:16 so I thought that I need to help her.

10:19 There are two things you need to know about sorcery.
10:22 First, when the objects were sent by the sender or witch doctor,
10:26 there are powers in them
10:30 and they can move around in the body and reappear
10:33 even after we remove them.
10:35 To cancel the power, you need to do prayers, spiritual healing
10:39 and one of it is Rukia that is based on the Quran
10:42 which Supayati is reading.
10:44 Once the magic is gone,
10:46 it becomes just an ordinary object that is lodged in the body
10:50 that you can see through x-rays
10:52 and must be removed surgically or else there will be infections.
10:56 So tell me, as a doctor,
10:58 isn't it my job to perform the surgery to help my patient heal?
11:02 That if you, doctor, held on medical science
11:08 and was not open and not receptive to the magic,
11:13 not receptive to spiritual healing,
11:16 you wouldn't have been able to help this woman.
11:19 There are other medical practitioners who criticised me for helping Supayati
11:22 because it is mystical and not scientific.
11:25 If by wearing this coat, it prevents me from saving lives
11:28 and people who are suffering, then I will take the coat off.
11:40 One of the objects that was retrieved from Supayati's body
11:43 was a five-inch nail that she vomited out during a spiritual healing session.
11:48 Dr Sageran said the nail did not cut Supayati's mouth or injure her.
11:53 The purpose of such an act is to frighten Supayati
11:56 and the people around her so that they will stop helping her.

12:50 After Supayati came and stayed here, the house felt rather hot.

13:00 such as one that sounded like a tiger roaring and nails falling on the rooftop.
13:05 When we were doing the prayers here,
13:09 we could hear sounds of something being thrown to the walls of the house.
13:14 And also, we saw shadows resembling snakes.
13:18 And I think these shadows were meant to frighten Supayati.
13:23 Supayati also captured pictures of sinister-looking shadows with her cell phone.
13:28 Today, she no longer sees these shadows nor photographs them.
13:32 The attacks stopped nine months after she was discharged from the hospital
13:37 and when she started practising the Rukia treatment on her own.
13:41 But I do wonder if she has fully recovered.
13:45 Are you completely healed today?
13:50 No, I am not fully cured.
13:53 I was fine for two years, but a month ago,
13:56 a nail and two needles appeared in my right leg.
13:59 But this time, I am ready.

14:04 Recently, I also feel something strange in my fingers.
14:08 They are very hot, like something is burning in them.
14:16 Although Supayati confidently said that she is able to handle the spiritual attacks,

16:06 I can't help but to wonder how come the spiritual treatment employed by her did not cure her completely.

16:14 I am sure there are other types of healing methods and Rukia is just one of them.

16:48 Actually, since the first six sessions of Rukia received by Supayati,
16:52 she was already healed as she has regained her consciousness and could do her daily activities.

17:34 The man in the photograph, he was actually the requester of the magic, not the sender.

17:41 But we shouldn't pay attention to this.
17:43 We should focus on the healing process.
17:45 Do you see a future or a brighter future or a more challenging future
17:51 whereby spiritual healing and medical science is actually put together for a holistic benefit of the patient?
18:01 In my experience, the relation between spiritual healing and also medical science is interdependent
18:07 because spiritual healing will need medical assistance.
18:10 For example, in Supayati's case, she needs to undergo surgery to remove the objects like nails,
18:17 pins, needles and hair from her body.
18:20 This is a medical procedure that I cannot do.
18:23 If these things are not taken out, she will probably die of infections and blood poisoning.
18:28 So the medical team needs to be open-minded enough to help someone like Supayati
18:33 and not treat it like a strain case with no hope and ask them to go to a witch doctor.

19:06 Because I pity the patients who suffer so much, especially after experiencing Supayati's case,
19:12 I see how important it is for science to work with the healers for the betterment and good health of the patient.

20:58 And what really tugs at my heart and in fact sometimes even angers me,
21:03 is the emotional anguish, the physical pains that she has endured through this time and still does till today.
21:12 From her story, I come to understand, maybe even begin to see that black magic does exist.
21:20 And it is something that I would tell you, should not.
21:25 And I do not condone people using it.
21:27 But then again, people who do, it's not about the magic, but the evil intention of man.

21:48 The holistic healing of a person which is inclusive of physical, mental, emotional and even perhaps spiritual.
