Shy shelter dog loves everyone in his new family
Transcript
00:00 Bentley was dumped outside of a shelter with his five siblings when he was only one week old.
00:04 Hi, I'm Dennis and this is Bentley's story for GOP.
00:08 They just drove up, put the puppies in a kennel and then drove away.
00:14 My wife and daughter went right down there, you know, we got to do something to help these puppies.
00:19 He was the last puppy left and we got him.
00:21 When I first met him, he was scared.
00:23 He sort of ran behind my wife and then my wife said, "No, that's daddy.
00:26 He's going to be your daddy. He's good."
00:28 And started baby talking and he sort of got excited and came over to me.
00:31 Mom adopted him. He's got a special place in his heart for her.
00:36 My wife told me, "Make sure you say he's a mama's boy."
00:39 But he loves me too. He'll do a 20-minute Zoomie every time I come home.
00:44 Piper, can Bentley have his bone?
00:45 He's my number two dog. Piper's number one.
00:48 I really love Piper. He's whined and deaf and got dementia.
00:51 I really have to focus on him and that makes him jealous.
00:54 But in the last two months, he's really shown more affection towards Piper.
01:03 I don't know if he knows he's deaf, but he knows he's blind and he shows more affection.
01:07 He's shy, very affectionate, very loving.
01:12 My wife had been sick and he wouldn't eat.
01:15 He stood by the door crying. He wanted to go in there.
01:18 Not like, "We're going to let mommy sleep."
01:19 He literally went outside with me and he got sick.
01:22 He threw up. His love for her is like something I've never seen before.
01:27 He knew she was sick and it made him sick.
01:30 He didn't eat all day. He ate at eight o'clock that night when my wife came out.
01:34 Where's he at?
01:34 He's the smartest dog I know.
01:36 He's sticking with that hand.
01:39 We have cameras out in the backyard and I was able to capture some of his skills.
01:43 He figured out that if he pushed the handle down and hooked and pulled, he could get in.
01:52 Mommy's home.
01:53 He probably understands 25 or 30 commands.
01:57 Where's your food from?
01:58 Oh, yeah.
02:01 He's very timid. He gets scared around other dogs.
02:04 He doesn't see many other dogs, but if we go out somewhere and there's dogs, he'll shy away from them.
02:10 Oh, big stretch.
02:11 He's a lover. He doesn't have an evil bone in his body.
02:14 And I think he's rightfully scared of every other dog.
02:18 You got Piper.
02:19 He's a full mixture.
02:20 There's like Pitbull. He's got some Chihuahua in him, believe it or not.
02:24 She was only gone for an hour.
02:25 He's got the full range of emotions right in his face.
02:28 He's literally smiling when he's happy.
02:31 And then he's got the sad look style.
02:33 He's got extreme empathy for dogs.
02:36 Why are you so sad? What happened?
02:38 And a lot of people have challenged me and they say dogs don't have empathy.
02:41 I'm like, oh yeah? Come meet Bentley.
02:43 He's licking the good hand because he knows if he licks the bad hand, you'll hurt Daddy.
02:50 He's a good boy. I'm going to take care of him and he's going to live the best life imaginable.
