Washburn: Jaylen Brown Has to Make IMPACT for Celtics Outside Just Scoring

  • last year
In a recent segment of "The Big 3 NBA Podcast," Gary Washburn shared his insights on Jaylen's role in the team. He emphasized that Jaylen often feels the need to contribute in specific ways, but the team's requirements might vary. Washburn stated, "I just feel like he feels like [scoring is] the way he's got to do his part and there's gonna be some nights where it's like Jaylen, we don't need you to score. We need to get offensive rebound, we need to get a stop a block, a steal, that type of thing. Like we need you to make a play and, you know, and that's not just a long three or a dunk."

00:00 Let's get into the blame game, because I do want to get a sense of who do you think was most at fault for this loss?
00:07 Or, evenly divided, whatever the case may be, what does your blame pile look like?
00:13 What do you got, Gary? I got a few people. I got one of them, but go at it, though.
00:17 I kind of know who it is, but continue. Gary.
00:21 Go ahead, Gary.
00:22 It's collective, to me. I thought Mazzulla taking out... Mazzulla letting his bench play early in the fourth quarter.
00:32 Mazzulla taking out Porzingis for the final play. I felt like Jalen Brown was just trying to...
00:39 He got in early, early foul trouble. He picked up his fifth in the third quarter.
00:42 Then he came in and tried to, like, "Okay, well, I'm going to score my way into a good game."
00:48 I just thought he made some plays. Drew Holiday with some... Not only did Drew miss free throws, but a couple of curious turnovers.
00:58 Sam Houser, one for nine. He got a lot of open shots.
01:02 That final play regulation where he took us a 30-footer.
01:05 That's kind of a testament to what we're talking about here.
01:08 It turns into just, like, you just need a two.
01:11 Then you try to end the game with a 30-footer. That's a hero ball shot.
01:16 I'm not saying Houser's trying to play hero ball, but he's just like, "Okay, I'm going to shoot this."
01:22 Also, why was that shot for him in general?
01:25 Tatum got doubled. Tatum dribbled down. He was at the sideline for whatever reason.
01:33 That was a bad decision on Tatum.
01:35 No, yeah. Sideline is another defender. Hedward was behind him.
01:40 Then here comes Lamello Ball leaving Houser alone and comes and really aggressively doubles.
01:45 Tatum passes to Houser, who could have passed, but he's like, "Okay, I guess I've got to shoot."
01:51 He knows the time's coming.
01:52 He air balls a 30-footer. That's just a terrible execution play.
01:56 You don't dump it in. You don't get a good shot attempt.
02:00 You don't get to the rack and try to get a free throw. Nothing.
02:03 Then you just leave the door open for Charlotte to win the game in overtime.
02:08 I felt like it was a collective effort.
02:11 Those guys looked tired. They looked disengaged after they took a 108-101 lead.
02:19 It was everybody. Tatum getting beat on the back door by Heyward.
02:25 Guys not rebounding. Let Mark Williams look like he was shacking there in terms of grabbing Moses Malone in his prime.
02:31 Looking like he's grabbing everything, not post Malone, but Quentin Moses Malone.
02:36 Don't do that. Don't do that. That's not even funny.
02:39 You know what? I should leave right now.
02:42 Did he say post Malone? No, I said Moses Malone.
02:45 Not Jeff Malone.
02:47 I feel so disrespected.
02:49 My post Malone. Moses Malone.
02:51 They just did everything they could.
02:55 Basically, in the end, as I said, there's Miles Bridges like, "Okay, let me take this."
03:01 That's how you lose. That's the basketball guys talking.
03:04 You let these fools hang around long enough that they're going to make a play and they're going to win the game.
03:10 And that's the Celtics' collective blame.
03:14 Jalen, a little bit of Jason down the stretch. He's going to score 45.
03:18 Sam Hauser going one for nine.
03:20 Korzingis missing some key free throws early.
03:23 Holiday missing some key free throws late.
03:26 Blaine goes all around.
03:29 Big pie.

03:49 Gary, I love you, brother, and I respect you, but you're dead, dirty wrong with this one.
03:56 And I'm going to tell you why.
03:58 The point that the blame can go all around, it's true to that.
04:03 But when you start going through these cats one by one, your $300 million man did not get it done.
04:11 Jay was horrible in this game, Gary. Horrible.
04:15 When you got as many made shots as fouls committed, you're not having a good night.
04:20 You're not having a good night.
04:22 And the thing about Jalen, not only was he not making shots,
04:26 he was making a negative impact at both ends of the floor.
04:31 Not making shots, not good defense, and just basically playing like crap.
04:37 And they needed him on a night when you don't got D-Wide, you don't got Al's defense.
04:41 You needed your number two guy to play like a number two guy.
04:46 He played more like a number 22 guy.
04:48 He was horrible in this game.
04:50 And I love Jalen Brown.
04:51 And he is one of the top—we went back and forth a little bit on this on the Garden Report.
04:57 I think Jalen Brown is a top 25 player in this league.
05:00 On some nights he could be top 10, top 15.
05:03 An argument can be made.
05:04 A player with that type of skill set should not be going 5-for-17 against the damn Charlotte Hornets.
05:11 I'm sorry. No disrespect.
05:13 No, forget that. I am disrespecting Charlotte.
05:16 I ain't even going to try to front like I'm not.
05:17 I am absolutely disrespected the Charlotte Hornets.
05:20 Jalen should have been better than that.
05:22 And his inability to even be remotely better than that was a big reason why they lost.
05:28 He had 13 points and he's had less than 15 points in back-to-back games.
05:32 He did that once last year.
05:34 I think he's only had it since he's been a regular starter.
05:37 There have been very few games where Jalen in the last two or three years had back-to-back games where he scored so little.
05:43 Typically when he has a low-scoring game in the teams, he bounces back with a big night.
05:49 That was not the case, obviously, in Charlotte.
05:51 I'm very interested to see what he does to get to Waukee because he has to be significantly better than we've seen him in these last two games.
05:59 Because if not, they catch another L.
06:02 What's going on? There's a bigger question there.
06:04 They're catching another L.
06:05 And Sam Houser, and I know he was horrible shooting the ball, but you know what?
06:09 Peyton Pritchard was not.
06:10 So you still got comparable production from that particular wing guard position.
06:18 A lot of guys weren't good, but Jalen Brown, listen, a lot of guys stumped.
06:23 Jalen Brown's stink to tune, if that's a word, it is right now, was a little bit higher than the rest of the cats.
06:28 That's all I'm saying.
06:30 Well said. Well said.
06:32 As we transition, sorry, his mic changed the mood. What are you going to say?
06:40 No, I agree that he was bad.
06:43 I look at his November numbers and he's struggling.
06:46 You know, 43 percent from the field, 30 percent from the three point line, 20.3 points, as opposed to the first three games in October.
06:56 The first three games of the season, he was 25 points a game.
06:59 His offensive rating this month, 101, which is not good.
07:02 So he's struggling.
07:04 And, you know, 21 for 70 from the three point line, you know, averaging almost three turnovers a game, you know, 26 turnovers in 10 games, the last 10 games.
07:15 So in rebounding, I mean, he's rebounding this down, you know, and if I look at Jalen in 13 games, Jalen has six offensive rebounds.
07:30 Like he's got to be he's got to be better than that.
07:34 He's got to he's got to he's got to do other little things.
07:39 So get your tea second, but you cannot have in 13 games a total of three, four hundred and forty minutes, six offensive rebounds.
07:51 He's got to be better. And you're right.
07:53 You know, and I said, I just think he's trying to mold into the offense.
07:57 I think he's got this. Well, you know what?
08:00 It's my turn to lead us. I don't think he's being selfish.
08:04 I don't think he wants all the stardom.
08:06 I just feel like he feels like that's the way he's got to do his part.
08:09 And there's going to be some nights where it's like, Jalen, we don't need you to score.
08:13 We need to get offensive rebound. We need you to stop a block, a steal, that type of thing.
08:19 Like we need you to make a play. And, you know, that's not just a long three or a dunk.
08:28 I mean, he tried two or three times to dunk on Mark Williams.
08:32 One time he got blocked. The other time he got fouled.
08:37 You know, so, you know, he was trying to prove a point.
08:40 But there's got to be more to contributing to the game for Jalen than a thunderous dunk or a long three.
08:46 There's got to be a steal. There's got to be something else intangible at times that he can keep the team in the game and win a game.
08:56 That's not like scoring major points.
09:00 I thought about his underwater workouts. And then I also thought about this is where my mind goes sometimes,
09:06 like the Bruce Lee quote where it's like, be like water, be able to adapt to the environment.
09:10 And that's something that obviously he can work out underwater.
09:14 But I think the same goes on the floor. What can you do to your point, Gary,
09:18 when you can't score so you can be like water for this team, because that's what they're going to need you to be if you guys are going to win a championship.
