00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat podcast
00:23here on the CLNS Media Network, presented by our wonderful friends over at PrizePix
00:28and GameTime. It is Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth. Day 19 of Patriots training
00:35camp is in the books. We are almost across the finish line. One more day of practice.
00:41It was a long day at Gillette today. They practiced nearly two and a half hours. Unfortunately,
00:46they weren't in full pads, but they're still in this kind of hybrid practice week as they're
00:51game prepping with scout team stuff and their player evaluating. So a long practice and
00:57a lot of important information before practice because we talked to the Patriots offensive
01:01assistant coaches for the first time since the spring. Obviously, lots of Drake May and
01:08quarterback talk with Alex Van Pelt. T.C. McCartney got some good wide receiver stuff
01:12out of Tyler Hughes and Van Pelt as well. So we'll talk about all what they had to say
01:17and some things that happened in practice as well. But starting as always with the quarterbacks
01:22with Drake May, Alex Van Pelt, T.C. McCartney seemed like they were very encouraged by the
01:28progress that the rookie has been making, specifically with the footwork, tying his
01:32eyes to his feet and stuff like that. But it still seems pretty clear from what they
01:38had to say and from, again, the reps on the practice field today, which we can get into
01:43that Jacoby Brissett is the starting quarterback. Alex Van Pelt even said, like someone asked,
01:49why isn't Drake May getting more reps at the ones? And he said, Jacoby, he's our starter.
01:53So still feels pretty clear that week one, it's most likely going to be Jacoby Brissett
01:58at this point. Yeah, it seems seems like things are turning
02:02that way. And I some of the reasons they're giving out as for why, uh, why Drake May isn't
02:10repping more with the ones like makes sense. And some of the things they want to see from
02:14him, like I understand that thought process, but this is within your control. I think he
02:18even said, like, we'd like to see him out there with the starters more.
02:21You know, it's the, I think you should leave me with the guy in the banana suit, right?
02:26We're all trying to earn the hot dog suits. We're all looking for the guy who did. We're
02:29all trying to find the guy who's not letting Drake May rep with the ones, right? So I understand
02:34the process. I think it's the right process. I just, do they want them to start week one
02:39or not? Cause they're operating like they don't want him to start week one, which is
02:42fine by the way, which is fine. They're operating like they're taking him along slowly, but
02:46then they're saying, well, it's a competition. We just need to see him more with the ones,
02:50but then they're not putting them with the ones. So it's not really a competition. Again.
02:54I like the process. I've said, I would give him a month and would give him a month. I
03:00really more so mean give the team a month to get ready for him. I'd give him a month,
03:06but then don't tell us that when we can clearly see there's no competition, I don't know why
03:12they're leaving that door open and van Pelton do it as bad as Mayo.
03:15He was asked about Mayo saying it's a competition and basically just referred back to those
03:18comments. I wouldn't say he like added anything on his own, which is probably the right call
03:22in his situation. But yeah, I mean the plan is clear as day. They're just not acknowledging
03:28it. That to me is what's going on here. Yeah. It seems pretty set that they're ready to
03:31let him sit at least a month. Right. We were talking week five a lot yesterday. Uh, and
03:37a lot of that feels like command of the playbook command of the huddle. Even though Gerard
03:43said, you know, he's a hundred percent confident that may could run a huddle. Like listening
03:47to those guys. Uh, I have the quote from, uh, AVP today. And he said, you know, there
03:53are certain things in this offense that Jacoby having played in this offense before you understand
03:58some of the tools that, uh, you know, you get to use in certain situations, pressure
04:03situations, things like that, you know, just going back to the experience Jacoby has in
04:06this offense. Again, he spent 2022 with them, played 11 games under van Pelt. Uh, TC McCartney
04:12even mentioned, you know, you're limited in the kind of defenses you get to see in
04:16training camp. You know, you get more of those exotic looks and different defenses as you
04:21move into the regular season. So maybe take a month, you see some of those other defenses
04:26on film. You know, he obviously won't be out there. Jacoby will be out there and maybe
04:30he gets a little bit more comfortable still in the huddle with command of the little things
04:34in the offense.
04:35And then you kind of turn it over. That seemed like one of their bigger selling points today
04:39was just, again, the experience that you would expect a guy like Jacoby Brissette to
04:43have. And that seemed like one of the big things working in Brissette's favor right
04:46now.
04:47Yeah. It's, and it's not surprising either. Again, this is kind of what we expected coming
04:51in, but it makes sense. They want Drake. They're not gonna, this goes back to something we
04:56talked about, I think on the crossover, Brian, if I remember correctly, that Jacoby Brissette's
05:01progress should not impact Drake Mays timeline. And I think that's essentially what we're
05:06seeing is Drake Mays playing better, but it may be Jacoby Brissette's playing a little
05:11worse, but there are just still certain boxes that he clearly isn't checked.
05:15Could they give more opportunities to check those boxes? Yes. And that's a separate discussion.
05:19But the reality is there, even though he looks good, there are boxes that they want him to
05:22check that he hasn't checked yet. And he's not going to start until he checks those boxes.
05:28So do you think those boxes are just kind of more of the mental side of the game because
05:33everything on the field that we've seen in camp and in the preseason, it's been very impressive.
05:38So you think that's just the mental side of things he needs to check off?
05:41Yeah, I, I think it's that, I think it's that, and just kind of wanted to see him,
05:45have him see a game week and see what that looks like. And he can't check that box until
05:48the regular season because there's no games. So yeah, I, it's, it's, it's the mental side
05:52and just, I think getting more immersed in the offense. He said something interesting yesterday,
05:57um, talking about one of those quarterback coaches at UNC that something he does is when he
06:03learns the offense, the way he kind of retains it is to teach it to the rookies,
06:08right. Teach it back to people, which is a really good way to do something.
06:12If you ask anybody who knows me personally, when I'm trying to learn the draft classes,
06:15I don't shut up about it because I'll be telling like my brother about these
06:19different players or whatever. But, um, you know, I think that's kind of a sign that,
06:25that they're, it's all going to kind of come together. We've also seen them. We'll talk about
06:29Caden Wallace, maybe a little hesitant to put him in. Uh, Jalen Polk is really the only rookie
06:35that seems to be getting an opportunity, like the early opportunities right now.
06:39And I just think these guys, they want these guys to be more immersed in it and, and, you know,
06:43know it like the back of their hand before they, they re they give them the real opportunities.
06:49So do you think you just saying that like to go back to March or February,
06:54we hear Elliot Wolf say, we're going to play all the young kids. We're going to draft and develop.
07:00I don't, I don't know. Is that just kind of weird that we're here now? Or do you think it's,
07:03it's simply just like, they're not ready yet to see the field. And you know, there is,
07:08there's more to it than just, we're going to throw the young kids out there and let them play.
07:13Yeah. Draft draft and develop may not mean draft and develop. Like this could be draft and develop
07:19they're developing and play. The kids could mean we're going to put them on the field at times,
07:24but it doesn't necessarily mean give them the most reps or start them right away.
07:27It just means play them. So it's perspective. Maybe we took that comment a little too
07:33extremely. I think it's not the right word, but you know what I'm saying? Like,
07:37maybe we didn't parse that common as much as we should have. Maybe we didn't look for context in
07:40that as much as we should have at the time, but it's, is this is definitely a draft and develop
07:46strategy at that part. It's true. Draft and develop does not necessarily mean play from
07:49week one. It means draft and develop. There's nothing in there about playing time.
07:53Yep. But yeah, it seems like, again, it's just the mental kind of side of things that
07:58separating Jacoby from Drake right now, because a lot of talk to about, you know, his footwork
08:04playing under center, which is two big things in this offense. We talked so much about Drake Mays
08:10footwork coming, you know, before the draft coming out of North Carolina, it was such a big point of
08:14emphasis, whether right or wrong. I thought TC McCartney, you know, gave a really good answer
08:18on that. And, you know, he said what they asked him to do at North Carolina, it wasn't wrong,
08:25necessarily. It was just different than what we wanted him to do here. So it was very easy,
08:29you know, to train him the right way and they think it's worked out just fine.
08:33So it feels like, you know, we've seen the progress in person. If you're watching on TV,
08:37you know, if you watch them at North Carolina and now you're watching them here,
08:40like you can see the progress in the footwork under center. You know, I thought it was good
08:46that Alex Van Pelt said, you know, our offense is based a lot out of under center and our run game,
08:51but we want our quarterbacks to feel comfortable. So if we want Drake May in the shotgun a little
08:55bit more, as you saw against Philly, I think 11 dropbacks and only one was under center.
08:59Like we're going to make these guys comfortable and kind of adapt, right? Our scheme isn't just
09:03going to be our scheme. We'll adapt to these things. So those were two big things with May
09:07coming into this offense. And I think those were encouraging signs to hear that from,
09:11you know, AVP and TC there today. Yeah. Yeah. I would agree. I would agree
09:15with that. I, I think, sorry, did you say Taekwondo in there? I kind of cut out.
09:20No, I was just on Drake still, but yeah, sorry. The under center that type of stuff.
09:26Yeah. The under center thing's the big thing. And I think the big takeaway from the last two days
09:30between both Van Pelt and Mayo, Mayo, the comment yesterday about he thinks Drake's ready to run a
09:38huddle. Now I, I, that doesn't mean start a game. There's a difference there. And I think some
09:41people jumped ahead, but Mayo saying he's ready to run a huddle. Some of the stuff in Pelt said
09:46today about his progress, maybe eliminates the conversation of the, the, the buffer quarterback,
09:52as we've been calling it, maybe eliminates having that veteran that if Jacobi reset gets hurt and
09:56you have to put Drake May in early, I do wonder if they're comfortable with Drake May as the backup.
10:01And at this point, it's like, well, he's going to have to learn this stuff one way or the other
10:04we'd rather he learn it in the VR room, in the practice field. But if he asked to learn it in
10:10a game, so be it. I wonder if they're at that point, I still think the timeline should be the
10:14timeline injury shouldn't be a part of it. But I think what we're hearing is that at the very least,
10:18he's going to be the backup. And if Jacobi reset gets hurt, it's just the timeline's going to move
10:21up. Yep. He's he said it yesterday. He's QB too, right? Like if something happens to Joby he's up.
10:28So those are the big things mechanically, just the last other mechanical thing TC mentioned was
10:34they're not going to adjust his throwing motion. I know that was another big thing that people
10:39pointed to coming out of the drafts. He's got kind of the big wind up, maybe something that
10:43he does with a quarterback coach on his own time, but they're pretty comfortable with how he throws
10:46the ball. So yeah, it just seemed positive with his mechanics. So anything else on May or Jacobi
10:55specifically from any of the coaches today? I think that's pretty much it from the coaches.
11:01We can talk about me as performance, but we can get into that. All right. So to the field with
11:07the quarterbacks still, do you want it? Sorry. Do you want to do that or do you want it? Because
11:11there's one other thing Van Pelt said today that was notable. Oh, with Taekwon? Yeah. Okay. Yeah,
11:17we can do that first. We can just hit on the coach stuff, but we've talked about Taekwon.
11:21I think we were talking about it on yesterday. Sorry, we can do quarterbacks. I just, I wanted
11:25to make sure. No, we can just do Taekwon. All right. All right. We'll get back to quarterbacks.
11:29We'll tease more quarterback talk later because everyone wants to hear the quarterback talk. But
11:34I think yesterday we were on here saying, do we buy into Taekwon again? Because he is running with
11:41the starters. He really seems like their top X receiver. And we were asked, or we asked Alex
11:47Van Pelt today, and he had a lot of praise for him. I don't have the exact quote. I don't know
11:52if you have it up, but I'm trying to find it. Yeah. Give me a second. You mentioned his ability
11:56to, you know, separate, you know, deep downfield, obviously the speed is a factor. Even Tyler Hughes
12:01said the receivers coach said not only like his lawn speed, but he's become a better route runner
12:07in the short and intermediate areas of the field as well. So the playing time suggest Taekwon is
12:13going to be on the roster. And now the compliments from the coaching staff and the good words from
12:19the coaching staff, like he's on the roster and he's going to have a role week one, as long as
12:23he's healthy going forward. Yeah. Talked about and where's his ability to separate his special,
12:30his speed downfield. And he also mentioned he's been more competitive at the catch point this
12:34summer mentioned how he's put that weight on. They clearly want him to be the X. They clearly
12:37want them to be a big part of the offense. And do I think his performance has earned that this
12:42camp? No. Do I think in some ways he's the best fit for that role? If you just look at it? Yes.
12:47But here's what's con what concerns me. I think I talked about this yesterday,
12:49but I talked about it on a show yesterday. I don't remember if it was this one. I think it
12:52was this one too many shows, too many days. We're almost done here. One more day. Um,
12:58I, I'm concerned about them, you know, fitting Taekwon into a key role in the offense. Cause
13:05you can't count on him to be out there. And if you think your offense needs Taekwon Thornton,
13:10that's concerning because you're probably not going to have him for 17 games.
13:14And that's where I get worried is them penciling him into that big of a role when
13:19durability has been an issue. I know we put on more weight. I know that's supposed to help,
13:23but it just does worry me how much it seems like they plan on relying on him this year.
13:28Yep. I mean, he has survived the ground a few times, so that's been positive. That's
13:34been improvements, but yeah, he hasn't, I don't think he's taken a hit in a preseason game. Right.
13:40Because the one target in the first game was overthrown. I don't think he had a catch last
13:46week, right. Against Philly. So I don't think he's taken a hit and kind of live action yet. So
13:53what we'll keep looking there. Someone asked to Javon Baker, Taekwon Thornton.
13:58Taekwon's ran over him. He's probably been more impressive too. It's been kind of the
14:01downward trajectory for Javon Baker lately. So he's pretty clearly ahead of him. I would say
14:08at this point Taekwon ahead of Javon Baker. So yeah, I would agree with that, but yeah,
14:15we're doing Taekwon for now. It looks like so. Taekwon's on the roster and lots of praise there.
14:22So let's take one very quick break. We'll hear from our friends over at PrizePix,
14:28and then we will get back to a little bit more of what happened in today's practice down there
14:33at Gillette. PrizePix is America's number one daily fantasy sports app with over 5 million

15:37PrizePix, run your game. All right, before we get today's practice, I want to pull this up.
15:44Just good like discussion point. Lowe says, how cool would it be to see Bourne pop in Taekwon as
15:50the top three? Where do you think Kendrick Bourne kind of fits into this when he comes back? Because
15:55what we've seen in practice with him on pop has been Taekwon at the X, pop in the slot, and then
16:00it's been pretty consistent of late. Jalen Polk and KJ Osborne are kind of rotating at that Z spot.
16:07So when Kendrick Bourne, he's another one of those kind of Z guys, where do you see him kind of
16:13fitting in when he comes back? Is there more of a rotation at X or how do you just kind of see that
16:19unfolding? Some of it's going to be based on performance, obviously. I think X is a real
16:24conversation for Bourne, but if Osborne's not... So Osborne and Polk have been two of their better
16:28receivers, I would say, in camp. So you'd think he'd fit in there at the Z, but clearly they're
16:34in pretty good shape there. So does the rotation come at the X or does he go to the Z and maybe
16:38Polk plays the X or even Osborne plays the X? Van Pelt said today they're comfortable playing
16:43Osborne really at any of the wide receiver positions. I know it's a cop-out answer. I
16:48hate to give it, but it does feel like it's going to come down to performance and just
16:52who's the odd man out four or five weeks in whenever it is.
16:55Yeah. Someone might go down too. Obviously that's not ideal, but we've talked about Taekwon's injury
17:00history. Maybe something happens. Yeah. I would expect performance and a lot of rotations. I think
17:05that's the big thing. You're going to see a lot of rotations in and out of there. But
17:09to today's practice, we can go back to the quarterbacks because it was still the Jacoby
17:15Brissett kind of show there. First up on all the team periods, a little bit more of Drake May
17:22running with the ones. He took six total snaps from David Andrews. Four of them were passes.
17:27I think yesterday he took three total snaps and they were all run. So a little bit more
17:31of an improvement. Are you, doesn't seem like he's making a push for the starting job based
17:37off everything the coaches had to say, but are you reading it as maybe they are opening the door
17:41still a little bit here, or this still felt like, again, a regular season practice, you know,
17:46non padded with the cards, scout team defense. They're just getting them ready to be QB too.
17:51And maybe get a series or two with the starter Sunday night in the preseason finale.
17:55Yeah. I, I, it still feels like they're getting them ready for just Sunday.
18:00And the, the, the fact they're giving him such few wraps, he finally threw today, but it was
18:04nothing past the line of scrimmage. It, this doesn't feel like those, those quality starter
18:09reps. Both coaches have talked about when talking about Drake may needing to be ready
18:13for, for a regular season start. This just feels like, let's just get everybody on the same page
18:18for Sunday night. And then I think when they go back behind closed doors next week,
18:24it's going to go back to being, uh, uh, more or less exclusively Jacoby reset.
18:30Yep. I could see it keeping like that in the regular season, right? Cause you still want percent
18:35or you still want may to get a few reps here and there with starters. And it's still, you know,
18:40Jacoby taking the most, I didn't tally up his, but he's still, you know, dominates the ones and
18:46may comes in for like two or three plays there at the end of each period. So I think that would
18:50be a good way to kind of carry that into the regular season. So you're still getting may
18:53some experience and time with those guys. So, um, I I'd like that rotation again,
18:58if they're starting for set. So, but anything performance wise out of those two, just again,
19:03felt more of the same. Yeah. I thought we've seen percent was better today.
19:09He had a deep connection in KJ Osborne. That was a good throw. It didn't feel like he was
19:13spraying it quite as much. May was good again. May was good again. Read through. I thought the
19:17big thing today, he was throwing a lot outside the numbers and really showcasing that arm strength and
19:21zipping the ball. Some harder to reach parts of the field had a good deep over deep crosser to
19:28Jalen Polk as well. He's he's just throwing the ball really well right now. And again,
19:32that mental stuff's going to have to come, but physically he's looked at the part.
19:35Yep. The only thing working on in Bursette's favor on the field, I think still is that final,
19:42like one minute, two minute. That's a good point. I meant to bring that up because they did another
19:46one. They ended practice again today and Bursette led a one, two, three, four, five, six, seven play
19:53drive. It was one Oh one on the clock started at like the 35 yard line. Bursette led a seven play
19:57field goal drive, couple spikes in there too. And then, which is pretty consistent, he's been
20:03leading mostly field goal drive. And I think he had one touchdown drive even earlier in the summer.
20:07So he's been good in those situations. And then it goes to May and it's kind of a complete
20:11different story. I mean, today his first pass kind of forced it into Jaheim Bell, but it hit off his
20:16hands or chest bounced into the air and was intercepted by Tristan Hill. So just one play
20:21and it was over. And that's been again, kind of a reoccurring theme where in those hurry up
20:25situations, Bursette has some success in May. He's working with the twos. It's fair to point
20:30out, but he just hasn't had those, that, that success in that final hurry up situation really
20:35throughout the whole summer here. Yeah. That's been one constant. And I wonder if that, that
20:39goes to the mental side. Cause it feels like he's very rushed. It feels like he's very fed up. He's
20:43not thinking things through in those situations. And I wonder if that's part of what's concerning
20:47for the coach is that when you get the livest reps of camp, which are those one minute or two
20:52minute situations, that's where he's been at his weakest. Yep. I still would have liked to see them.
20:58I don't know it, the Philly game, he led like the two scoring drives and then they could have got
21:04the ball back with like 40 seconds left and they took it into the locker room, which like I got,
21:09because it was back-to-back good drives, right? Like end on a positive, but it would have been
21:14kind of nice to see like two timeouts, 40 seconds and live action, one of those hurry up drills.
21:19But I don't blame them too much. Cause again, take a positive into the locker room at that
21:23point. But yeah, that's been again, just kind of a reoccurring theme that this summer that he
21:28struggled in those situations. So that kind of continued today, but any last thoughts on the
21:35quarterback or we can go elsewhere quarterbacks? Yeah, I think that's pretty much it on the
21:39quarterbacks. Yep. Let's go to the offensive line, moving guys all over the place. Again,
21:45today, Vidarian low was out. He's reportedly dealing with kind of a minor oblique injury
21:51that he suffered yesterday. So he was out. So we saw chooks, a core for flip back over to the left
21:56side, big Mike on when you kick out to the right side and laid in Robinson. Who's been, you know,
22:02gaining some momentum here, steps in for big Mike at right guard, Alex Van Pelt said, they hope to
22:08solidify this starting five after this preseason game. Do you think that's what it's going to be?
22:14Or could be there and low, get healthy and switch that up? Just what's going on on the
22:20offensive line right now? Yeah. So it sounds like low is going to be healthy for week one. And I
22:25just still feel like that's the line they want given how much time they've given it. But
22:29whatever the group is, either, even either it's Kane Wallace at left tackle, like we saw when low
22:33went out yesterday, or it's this Mike on one who right tackle line with laid Robinson in the lineup.
22:38If either one of them play well, it's, it's kind of like I've talked about with the quarterbacks.
22:42If one of those groups works, even if they go back to the daring low, at some point,
22:46if he's struggling, you now know you have another group in your back pocket and maybe it,
22:51it forces their hand a little bit early. So it'd be an interesting opportunity. It'll be
22:54interesting to see what they go with on Sunday night, but at the, the own winter light, like I
22:59get getting laid in Robinson and I just a 350 pound tackle in this offense is asking a lot.
23:06It's really asking a lot of any offense. Yeah, that's true. So I, I don't,
23:12maybe they're not ready for Kane Wallace and I get, he's still kind of raw. And this ultimately
23:15goes back to, you should've added some actual freaking tackles in the off season to be ready
23:20for this kind of situation. But I just get nervous. Cause if you move my going out to
23:24tackle and he struggles, that's your one kind of blue chip lineman. And if he's not playing at a
23:30blue chip level, now you're really in trouble. You, you lose that anchor. I know it's David
23:33Andrews, but Michael and when you, you know, in terms of just abilities, the anchor of this line
23:37right now. So if you lose that, I'd be worried. I'd like to see more looks with Kane Wallace at
23:41left. See what that looks like. Or even Wallace at left or even Wallace at right and a core for it
23:46left, which again, they had him over there today. So we know that he's comfortable, but I think it
23:51is just good to see that, um, that it's going to be good for them to see other combinations
23:59and hopefully they find when they like, and maybe it, it, it forced them to move on from
24:03dairy and low. I think we both agree just as not had a good summer. I'll say this. Yes. Orlando
24:07Brown's three 50. He's also an unreal athlete and has been playing that position for most of his
24:12life. Yeah. So it's a, it's, there's a reason he's so good. That kind of skill is rare.
24:18He's not a guard at heart who has struggled at times at tackle, you know, with athletic
24:24speed rushers along the edge and stuff like that. But yeah, I wonder if, you know, again,
24:30it was a non padded practice today. So I wonder if they said, let's go with this lineup just to
24:34see a second look because yesterday when the pads were on, it was just plug and play Caden
24:39Wallace for the dairy and low. They like, they didn't shuffle everything around. So I wonder if
24:43they, they took that today as, you know, a non padded practice, you know, they were doing that
24:48contingency thing last week, flipping through all these rotations. I wonder if that's just what,
24:53what their plan was kind of today. But, um, yeah, again, they said they want to solidify this thing
24:58after Sunday's game. We've moved that timeline back a little bit from earlier in the summer,
25:03but, uh, that's where we're at. That's the tackles down and all these guys moving spots.
25:08So hopefully they, you know, veterinarian low is back. It seems like you hope he's back. That
25:13seems to be their ideal left tackle. Then they figure everything else out, um, with that lineup
25:18up front. But, um, that was really at offensive line, uh, quick with pass catchers, big day for
25:27Jalen Polk. We talked about him a little bit earlier, uh, still repping with the top offense
25:33and kind of made his Mark six targets, five catches most in the short to intermediate
25:40area, like nothing flashy, but then, you know, he had a nice connection downfield that you hinted
25:44at earlier, uh, with Drake may. So I feel like that's just what you're going to get with Jalen
25:49Polk and not a bad thing. I think you would take that all the time on Sundays from him.
25:53Yeah, that's kind of what he needs to be. And it was, there's that deep over, but it was nothing
25:57super explosive. He's kind of running the underneath stuff that's created by the more
26:02explosive routes that, you know, guys like Tyco and Thornton are running and that's what he's
26:06going to be. He's going to be a high volume target. He's going to be a chain mover and
26:09he looks like he's developing good chemistry with both quarterbacks, which is big. And
26:13just, it's, it's about consistency with him. He's going to have to be consistent.
26:17And you saw it today, different looks, different formations, different quarterbacks. It didn't
26:22really matter. He was able to just go out there and, and, and make plays time and time and time
26:27again, do it more than one practice. Right. But that's kind of what you want to see from Jalen
26:33Polk today felt like a good representation of, I think the player they drafted him to be.
26:37Definitely. Yeah. Two catches from Jacoby three from Drake. So on the same page, it looks like
26:42with both of those guys, that's encouraging. Um, cause it looks like he's going to see the fields
26:47pretty early and often here, which is good to see from a second round rookie there. So,
26:52um, encouraging for Jalen Polk. We talked about Taekwon, uh, at the top there still
26:58repping with the top guys, Osborne pop still to anything else receivers, uh, Jalen Rager,
27:04give him some credit. It had two really nice catches or, uh, Jacoby presets one minute drive
27:10there, but anything else you can lump tight ends into this to anything else, uh, from those past
27:14catchers today. I think that's pretty much it. It was Polk got most of the attention. I would say
27:20is it pop talked about the drop he had yesterday and admitted he could have caught the ball.
27:24If he tried with two hands, but he only caught, he only tried one that was on the big play from,
27:29from Drake may. So, uh, call that whatever you want to call it. But, um, that was probably my
27:36one other, my one other takeaway was him only a great line. He goes, practice makes perfect,
27:40but that wasn't perfect. That wasn't perfect. Yeah. Good old pop is always smiling. Always
27:46laughing. He's asked about that again today to just, he's always in a good mood, good energy on
27:50that offense. But, um, before we wrap up with just a little bit on the defense, some stuff on special
27:58teams, game time, we all love going to football games live. It's beginning to feel like football
28:03weather outside and it's whether it's going to Gillette to see the Patriots or any college
28:08football game. You can go to BC and see Billy. Oh, up in Chestnut Hill or wherever you want to go,

29:01first purchase terms apply again, create an account and redeem code C L N S for $20 off
29:07download game time today. What time is it game time? Um, defense, not much today. Again,
29:16their top defense was running against a scout team offense. Uh, Bailey's happy running a lot
29:21of zone reads pretending to be the commanders there. Um, I think the big thing defensively
29:27was Del Pettis. Gerard Mayo talked about it yesterday that he's making a good push here
29:32to make the roster to pass breakups today. Uh, in coverage on Jaheim Bell, both the one that,
29:39you know, got intercepted by Drake May and another one that Jacoby percent almost through
29:43an interception. So the arrow kind of keeps pointing up here for Del Pettis.
29:48Yeah. He just keeps making plays. He keeps being near the ball and that's how you make the team.
29:51And Mayo mentioned his special teams ability as well. They're not going to have dedicated special
29:56teamers this year. So that certainly helps. I think he's played his way onto the roster. And
30:00again, just those guys, especially at the safety position, if you can just prove you have a knack
30:04for getting to the football when you need to be there, generally that gets you to a certain
30:10baseline level of play in the NFL. So I liked what I've seen for him. He keeps making plays
30:14and I think he's going to be here. Yep. Uh, again, not much on defense. So just some
30:20attendance stuff, still no Josh UJ, still no O'Shane's a minute as they were both kind of,
30:26they were out there in their jerseys, but not participating in a full. So we'll see about that.
30:31Um, Armand Watts, non-participant he's been kind of in and out over the last few days.
30:38Do you have him on your roster right now? Again, first free agent signings there,
30:41but Armand Watts in the middle of the defense. I don't see how he makes the team. He's,
30:45we've talked about this. He's just getting outperformed by players in this position.
30:48Jeremiah farms, Tristan Hill, who had the interception today on a pass broken up by
30:52Del Pettis. Those guys just been better. And you're not, they're not going to keep that many
30:57defensive tackles. Cause you have Devon gotcha. I have Daniel quality at the top of that depth
31:01chart. You're going to keep them as a fifth defensive tackle. When we think realistically,
31:05they could carry seven receivers or seven corners. Are you going to keep Armand Watts over
31:12Isaiah Bolden or Keyshawn booty or somebody like that? Like I just don't see it.
31:17Yeah. Tough to see. And then one injury in the secondary Mikey Victor went out pretty,
31:24or like halfway through practice looked like his lower leg ankle, but he just walked out. So
31:31yeah. Hit to the secondary there with Michael Mikey Victor. We'll see what happens with him,
31:35but yeah, I think that's it defensively. Right. Yeah. Tough quiet day from that end is probably
31:43a good sign, but, um, let's wrap up with some special teams. First off, Bryce Behringer was
31:50unbelievable today. He had a period where they were kicking around right around the 50 yard line,
31:56nine punts. Every single one was down inside the 20, several of them were down inside the five.
32:02He's been outstanding this summer. And just that punt today, we were standing next to each other.
32:07Even Taylor was into it. Like he's standing next to us. He took his breath away a few times. So
32:13just shout out to Bryce Behringer. He, he was awesome today in that session.
32:17Yeah, he was really good and he's going to be kind of their better players this year. I know
32:21people roll their eyes at that, but he, he's going to be in the all pro conversation. If
32:25he punts like this throughout the season. Yep. And then wrap up with kickers,
32:30Chad Ryland got the one minute drill kick into the skinny goalposts. So bonus points for him,
32:3747 yards into the skinny post. He made it and then, but couldn't really build on the momentum
32:44to end practice. They went four kicks as they usually do back on the regular goalpost. Chad
32:50went two of four missed from 37 and 49. Sly went three of four missed from 42. Every kick was missed
32:57wide, right? There was a steady left to right breeze. We called it out there, but yeah, probably
33:03another good sign there or another step in the right direction for Joey Sly to cement himself
33:09as the guy. He continues to look like the better kicker he does. And it's, I just don't see how
33:16they keep Ryland at this point. And I get it. He was a fourth round draft pick and you made the
33:19investment and all of that. You need to win games and Joey Sly is going to help you win games.
33:24I think the thing with Ryland is do you keep him on the practice squad? I think they will keep a
33:30kicker on the practice squad because with Sly, like he's a guy that's been up and down in his
33:34career and you want somebody ready in case he cools off. Is Ryland that guy, or do they just
33:39go find somebody else off the street? But at this point, if they don't keep Joey Sly, I'm going to,
33:44like, I'd be annoyed. It would be a puzzling decision at this point. I think if they don't
33:50keep Joey Sly, so, um, but there's one more game. So who knows what's going to happen in game action?
33:56We'll wait and see Sunday night there. So, um, yeah, again, a long practice, but not
34:02too much going on as you know, their game prep and stuff like that, but some good stuff from
34:07the coaches are early on and then a little bit of stuff there throughout the day. So
34:12any last thoughts from you or we're back out there tomorrow, last day, last day of summer
34:18school out there. Uh, anything, I don't know. I think there'll be back in full pads or anything.
34:23You're just kind of looking forward to, uh, on this final day here. Well, if they are mirroring
34:27a game week, this is a lighter practice. It's generally Fridays is kind of not quite a walk
34:33through, but more just situational stuff rather than the, the, the full playbook it's we'll see
34:40what Drake may does. We'll see if he gets more reps, but I think, I guess the one thing you're
34:45looking into more, so going to that final practice is going to this final price will be the offensive
34:49line configuration. If a Darian Lowe's not out there, do they go to a third combination? Do they
34:53go back to Michael Leonard? Do they go back to Kate Wallace? But I think we've seen everything
34:58we're going to see. And I say that meaning these have not been your typical training camp
35:03practices that are like evaluation competitive type of practices. These are more instructional
35:09practices and there's just not as much you can glean from those. So it's a different setup than
35:14in years past, but I think we've, we've more or less seen what we're going to see from practice
35:19points. It's still the game Sunday and that might be the tiebreaker on some of these roster battles.
35:23Backup center is going to be one. Liam Fornadel had a couple of bad snaps today.
35:27Didn't touch on that a ton, but, um, I think for the most part, like there's not that much more
35:33information coming. Yep. But, uh, Josh did ask, is this the last practice we'll go to? Yes. This
35:39is our last full practice that we get like full access after it just goes to, you know, the first
35:4510 minutes of stretch. I think they're back. They practice tomorrow, then game Sunday. They're off
35:53Monday to, or they're in Monday. They're off Tuesday practice, Wednesday, Thursday. So when
35:57we come back Wednesday, Thursday, it's just going to be the first 10 minutes of stretch
36:00and we don't have everything to break down. But, um, that means we'll have real football
36:05games to break down. And so give or take, right. But, um, we'll call it there. We'll be back
36:14tomorrow. Not sure what time I believe we're doing a crossover. Cause it's the last
36:20practice of the summer and one of the blocks and in one of the blocks of practices. So
36:24should be a crossover with Taylor. Mike, we'll let everyone know on Patriot CLNS when that is
36:28going live. And of course subscribe to the Patriots press pass. So you don't miss anything
36:32on there as well. And in the meantime, you can follow Alex on Twitter at real Alex Barth,
