00:00The Cedric Maxwell podcast is brought to you by Ice Picks and the Game Time app.
00:16All right, it's another episode of the Cedric Maxwell podcast.
00:22I'm Josue Pavone.
00:23He is, of course, Cedric Maxwell, but we're joined by Boston Globes Gary Washburn, one
00:28third of the big NBA three podcast here on CLNS Media.
00:32How you been, Gary?
00:33What a hell of a summer you have it, man.
00:35It's almost done.
00:36Yeah, everything's good.
00:37Yeah.
00:38I mean, it's been a lot going on, obviously the finals and then a few weeks later, just
00:44went to Paris for the Olympics and now there's been kind of relaxing, kicking back a little
00:49bit since before, you know, obviously things pick up again in late September, but yeah,
00:55everything is good.
00:56It's been an eventful summer.
00:59You know, it's short.
01:00I mean, we almost back to this whole thing again, but yeah, it's everything's been good
01:05and you know, I haven't caught up with Max, haven't seen Max kind of been on like low
01:11profile tips.
01:12So I'm definitely eager to learn what's going on with Max.
01:16Well, I ain't been doing nothing, brother.
01:18I'm just down here in Charlotte relaxing.
01:21When I hear about you being over in Paris, how did me and Josue get on that ticket, man?
01:26You know, you going to Paris?
01:28It wasn't like you were covering the Celtics or nothing, but you know.
01:31Right?
01:32That sounds like the greatest like summer for any NBA writer.
01:35You know, like you just like, oh yeah, it was, it was cool.
01:39It was all right.
01:40No, I worked out well.
01:41I was happy, man.
01:42Oui, oui.
01:43Oui, oui.
01:44Oui, oui, negro.
01:45Oui, oui, okay.
01:46You got no friend stories?
01:47You gotta give us something, man.
01:48Did you wear that hat?
01:49What's it?
01:50I'm not sure.
01:51Yeah, I'm not sure.
01:52But you know, it's, it's been great.
01:53man. Did you wear that that hat? What's it? What's it? I'm I'm
01:56oh hell. I'll put myself out there right now. What hat? You
02:00know what I'm talking about? It starts with a B. Yeah, the
02:05beret. That's it. Damn it. I should have looked that up
02:07before we started before we started this. You need some
02:09culture, dawg. Start with a B. I knew you knew what I was
02:14talking about but I was like, Gary's going to put, he's
02:16going to make me look even worse. It's about a beret. Well,
02:20Gary. Man, it's Boston. It's Boston Public School Education
02:23System, man. Before, before the charter schools. Yes, before
02:28the charter schools. Well, let's get down, man. It's a little
02:31bit about, you know, this we we've heard so much about the
02:35Olympics. We heard so much about you know, the basketball
02:39part of it but the blowback with Jason Tatum seems like
02:42everybody that sees me, the first thing they're saying is,
02:46they did your boy wrong. They did your boy wrong and I keep
02:49hearing that. Did you feel that over there? Did you talk to
02:53Tatum about you did, he got done wrong? Uh you know, I I
02:59had a brief conversation with Jason, Jason out there, a
03:01couple of them. Um and he was just confused. I think the
03:06whole level of confusion uh and there's a lot going on. I think
03:10with the roster and I think Kerr had his favorites and you
03:16know and that's not a bad thing. I don't I think it's
03:18bad coaching but he obviously had a real affinity for Devin
03:23Booker. Okay. Um he really liked the the adjustments that
03:28Devin made. Kind of changing his role from what he does in
03:31Phoenix which is primarily a score to being a defender. Kind
03:35of being that that that glue guy, Swiss army knife type of
03:39guy and Jason just never really got into a flow with team USA.
03:46It just he was thinking too much. He was trying to make
03:49moves. He he just didn't play in the flow. You can just tell
03:52he was not in a rhythm and is that Kerr's fault was at the
03:56playing time and I also think Jason just didn't play well.
03:59You know, his shot wasn't going down. He was afraid to shoot
04:04threes. One of his threes at the side of the backboard. One
04:08of his corner threes, you know, he did not play well.
04:11Obviously, we've been watching Jason since he was 19 years
04:15old and you can tell when Jason's going and you can tell
04:18when Jason's trying too hard or thinking and I think he was
04:22thinking um uh a little too much trying to trying to get
04:27in and uh and I think when you look at other guys like Anthony
04:30Edwards, Anthony Edwards, people will, well, he should
04:34have played like Anthony Edwards did the best. He shot
04:38like fifty-something percent from three. He shot. He was
04:42scoring. He was efficient. Devin Booker was efficient. If
04:45you look at the the shooting, Jason was not efficient and so
04:50do you blame Kerr for not giving him extended minutes to
04:53try to get himself out of it or do you say, hey, Jason, you
04:56just gotta play better because you're on a team filled with
05:00Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers and if you don't step
05:03up, you're going to be right next to Halliburton on the
05:05bench which he was. He decided, I don't know what he had
05:09against Halliburton. You know, obviously, Halliburton's first
05:11Olympics but Jason was the second best player on team USA
05:15in 2021 in Tokyo behind Kevin Durant but I think once Durant
05:20came back from this injury, um Jason, Jason's minutes
05:26suffered. Obviously, he didn't play either game against
05:28Serbia. Uh I don't, I didn't understand it but I also
05:33thought Jason didn't help his case by not playing well at
05:36all either like that was a thing too. It wasn't like Jason
05:39was lighting it up. He wasn't. But while we and and you say
05:42that and it's like so many people are pissed off. I'm
05:44like, Steve Kerr's job was one thing. That was to win an
05:47Olympic medal and he he did that uh with the team that he
05:51had. I don't think that you know, you can look back and so
05:54slapping down on him. Everybody says, well, will this affect
05:58Tatum, you know, going into next year because there's going
06:01to be a lot of people going to be going at him because you
06:04didn't play. You didn't play but but what a season that
06:08young man had, you know, to win an uh NBA title, to get a
06:12gold medal, to get married, to have a have a new baby, and
06:17coming into a new season. It was, I mean, it was what's
06:20dreams is made of other than the fact he didn't play that
06:23much but everybody can't play in those situations. I don't
06:27care who you are and Steve Kerr, I thought kind of did
06:30what he needed to do and you know, we did what he needed to
06:33do because he won an Olympic medal. Now, tell me just how
06:36exciting it was over there when uh Steph Curry got going
06:40because that's crazy. I don't think I've ever seen anything
06:45like that before in my life. It was crazy because um you know,
06:50it was in Paris. Obviously, most of the fans were the fans
06:56were great in the sense of like you can tell that they love
07:01their home country and and France was getting all a lot of
07:04the but they also love NBA basketball. They love Lebron.
07:08They love Steph. They Durant. They they are very fond of the
07:12superstars of the NBA. So, whenever those guys did
07:15something, they weren't like they were booing. The only
07:17person they boo was Embiid because he didn't play for team
07:20France and and all that stuff but everybody else was kind of
07:23like they liked them. So, it turned from like France having
07:29a chance to win and coming close and then Steph going off
07:32and the crowd was like, well, this is history. We're going to
07:35cheer for this guy. So, the crowd got into it. I mean, it
07:39was a surreal atmosphere because you're like, okay,
07:42what's going to happen here and then Steph goes on his time,
07:46his tangent, just boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, four to four
07:49and 2 minutes and 12 seconds and just carries him and it was
07:53like watching obviously a magician at work, a artist at
07:57work, however you want to put it. Uh just an artist just
08:02putting everything and then obviously that final one with
08:05two defenders and him just flipping it up there and you're
08:08like, oh my goodness. So, the fans were going crazy. Um they
08:12knew it was history being made. They knew that obviously the
08:16greatest shooter in the world is playing like the greatest
08:19shooter in the world. So, for me, I thought it was uh uh a
08:23tremendous, it was amazing atmosphere and even as the
08:27French fans were not booing, they were into it. They knew, I
08:29mean, I don't think they uh envision their team winning the
08:33gold medal in basketball but to see them play a good game, get
08:38into it and then all of a sudden, Steph goes nuts. That's
08:42that's that was uh surreal atmosphere. Yeah, I feel like
08:46he's saved the best for last man. The the gold medal game and
08:49the game leading into that. It was unreal to see him do that on
08:53that international stage for sure but to get back to uh what
08:56you're saying about Jason Tatum and I don't subscribe to this
08:59theory but I do want to ask you, do you think there's
09:01anything about what happened in 2024? You know, being out there
09:04in France that'll discourage him to do this again and I'm not
09:07saying as if like, oh, well, don't worry about it. You know,
09:09report saying that Steve Kerr is not going to be around. I
09:11mean, regardless, do you think he's going to be hesitant to to
09:14go back especially when it's going to be, you know, here in
09:16the US and and and LA? I don't think it'll be, I don't think,
09:21I think he'll deep, think deeply about it and I think
09:25obviously, we're talking about 4 years from now. 4 years from
09:28now, he could have an MVP. He could have another
09:31championship. His status will be considerably likely different
09:35in the NBA than it is now. Now, you know, people are
09:38questioning whether he's a top five player and I understand
09:41all that because he didn't show it amongst his peers like he
09:44didn't show I'm the best dude on the floor on any game that
09:48he played with team. He was just kind of blended in and you
09:52know, he's gotta, I would say, reprove himself a little bit.
09:55He should be fired up and do I think he got done wrong? Yeah,
09:59I think Kirk could have handled it a lot better. How? I think
10:03you gotta give him a chance to to to play. You can't, you
10:07can't, you can't, you can't, you can't, you gotta give me a
10:14chance to play. You've made, you've made, you've got two of
10:17us already. You said, no, no, he wasn't good but there was
10:21other guys who weren't good. Steph wasn't good until the
10:24last two games. Steph got a chance. I mean, here's the
10:29points you make. You say, didn't shoot it well. No, he
10:32wasn't confident. He didn't have any swagger about it. Okay,
10:36wait a minute. I'm gonna put you in the game and let you
10:38play yourself out of it when in fact, your job is to win the
10:42Olympics. No, no, I agree with that but I think you put him in
10:45the games, Puerto Rico, you you you try to give him an
10:49opportunity to break out of that thing and it never
10:52happened and then, you know, and I and I I said, Tatum and
10:55then defensively, I thought Tatum could have brought a lot
10:58to the table too. It wasn't just shooting the ball. I
11:00thought Tatum could have given them versatility. I mean, they
11:03weren't good defensively against Serbia. You don't, you
11:06don't give him a shot there. Um they were allowing nothing but
11:09you know, they allowed fifteen three pointers in the first
11:12three quarters. I think, I mean, Serbia was shooting the
11:15lights out of the ball. The defense was terrible. You can't
11:18give him a shot there. Hey, Jason, get us a stop. Get us
11:22some rebounds. I thought he did other things well. Play
11:25defense, got some rebounds, a block shot, a steal and he did
11:28the other little things well. He just wasn't scoring the ball
11:31well. So, I do understand why he didn't play as many minutes.
11:35Um you know, but two DNPs, I thought you could have put him
11:39in there and gave him up, giving him an opportunity to
11:41play. Well, couldn't you put Halliburton in there? He
11:44could have done that too. I thought Halliburton brought
11:46something to the table too. I think as a coach, you have to
11:49make a decision about guys who are going to play and guys who
11:54aren't going to play and how effective your game plan is. I
11:57love Jason Taylor but in this game plan, he used the red. He
12:03made sure LeBron and this, what does this also do? It's a
12:06two-part questionnaire. What does this also do to LeBron
12:09James' legacy? My god, that man was like a machine. Yeah. I
12:14mean, it was crazy to see him at that age doing what he was
12:18able to do. I mean, it's amazing. I mean, he you just
12:25you you have to give him his props. Now, you wanna say he's
12:29better than Jordan. There's a debate there. Um you wanna say
12:32he's the greatest of all time for sure. He he could he could
12:35be that guy but just at age thirty-nine being the most
12:39energetic player on the floor, being unstoppable, getting to
12:42the rim, just kinda having that that dog that that that
12:46yeah, just that guy. Um you know, that was I just thought
12:50that was pretty tremendous that he gave his all and and and
12:54and you're like, well, he could never play in uh twenty-eight.
12:57Maybe he could. He'd be 43 years old. You never know. Oh,
13:01that's crazy. You put nothing past him. You can't put anything
13:04past this man at this point in his career. He has played 21
13:10years of just high-level basketball. That's never been
13:13done by George, by nobody in this league. You know, our
13:17friend Robert Parrish played 21 years. Kevin Willis. There's
13:20guys who's played 21 years. Vince Carter played 20 years
13:24but not at this level sustained level. At that level, you're
13:28talking about where Robert Parrish and Kevin Willis and
13:31guys like that. They were watchers. They weren't, they
13:34weren't driving the bus. LeBron James. That's what was so crazy
13:39for me to see. His overall persona, his strength, his I
13:43mean, the way he affected, I could see the players on the
13:46boat on the other teams being intimidated by LeBron James as
13:51if he was uh you know, twenty-four, twenty-five.
13:53Instead of going at this dude, they shied away from him and
13:58that was that was kind of it was baffling to me but I
14:02understand but I but he it's almost like he walked out there
14:06and he had a a gold suit around him. People were being
14:09aggressive. People were were pretty much showing homage to
14:14him and uh but he played in that way which was was
14:17fascinating to me. Yeah. I mean III think he is obviously just
14:24one of the top two all time. If you wanna put him uh uh uh I'm
14:29not gonna laugh anymore or say what the hell are you talking
14:31about if you say he's greater than Jordan although I think
14:34the cases are different a little bit but yeah, when you
14:37said top two, I'm like you you're a Jordan guy. I'm a
14:39Jordan guy too but yeah, I mean, how how how are how are
14:43things different now that you look at? I mean, he's the
14:47extended career that he's given the plan until no one's played
14:52at this level at age thirty-nine. No, but not
14:53Jordan. Even though Jordan averaged twenty points a game
14:56at 40 years old for the Wizards. People like people
14:58always wanna diss on the on the Jordan Wizards uh that era and
15:04always because they weren't good but Jordan averaged twenty
15:06points a game and he he he had like a fifty-five point game. I
15:10wanna say in his last year. They do. I mean, you know, so
15:14it wasn't like Jordan and Jordan had bad knee. His knees
15:17were were done. Uh he kinda he he he played with the Wizards
15:21as kind of a PR move because the nothing was nothing else
15:25was working in Washington and nothing has really worked since
15:28in Washington. For real. But if you're looking at like um
15:35overall resume besides the finals, you know, and and and
15:40and you know, you can go back. Can you blame LeBron for the
15:43Lakers not being successful uh over the last few years since
15:47the the the bubble championship? You can probably
15:50you can put that on some of that on him uh but in terms of
15:54sustained dominance in the game and still being a top ten
15:58player. Now, you want might wanna say, is he top five? You
16:02can probably argue that he's not right now. Top ten. Top
16:06ten. Top ten. Totally. Yeah. Can you put Yannis and you know,
16:12do you wanna put Anthony Edwards in there or whatever?
16:15Do you wanna put, you know, other guy? Are there other guys
16:17you you would say uh staff or whatever? You know, you can you
16:21can you can maybe push LeBron back to six or seven but that's
16:25about it. Like that's he's still in top ten bonafide
16:29player in the league at age thirty-nine and we'll see if
16:31this will catapult him into this season with the Lakers
16:34uh because obviously they need to win something. Um the the
16:38clock is ticking for that too bad. Huh? Too bad. Too bad.
16:42Alright. So. Max don't wanna see that. No. Max. Max, if you
16:45wanted to see another uh Celtics Lakers finals, he said,
16:47nah, I'm good. That's alright. Lakers. Lakers ain't gonna get
16:50there. Yeah. So. I'm just saying hypothetically, man.
16:53LeBron versus Tatum. There's a lot of stuff that would be fun,
16:56man. Well, just the fact that that level of dominance, you
17:00gotta give LeBron his props. You have to give him his credit.
17:04Um and you know, does he sell the whole thing? Put the king
17:09crown around his head? I might not do all that. Well, let's
17:13talk about it this way. LeBron, LeBron James was dominant in a
17:17three-week period that he's been that good. We can look at
17:21this season. He was good but he wasn't that good. Prize Picks

19:08brother. You know, like you that. Honestly. Okay, sorry. I
19:12heard that your wedding, you had, you know, a cookie, you
19:16know, a cookie and ice cream. Isn't that right? Thank you,
19:19Josue. Thank you, Josue. Josue. Something like that. Yeah. Oh,
19:24I I don't think people know. I I didn't get invited. I was
19:29there and you know. Damn it, Max. That's why Gary don't
19:32invite me to anything anymore. I'mma let it out. You know,
19:35Josue all of a sudden said, yo, man, where were you at? I'm
19:38like, oh my. Gary's wedding. I'm like, Gary's wedding. When
19:42did Gary get married? He just. Right there. I just stopped
19:46talking. Gary, I swear. I just stopped talking. He's like,
19:48you're looking at me like. Here I was. You ain't gonna answer
19:51my question? I thought it was a destination wedding. I'm like,
19:54so, where'd he get married? Oh, he he got he got married right
19:58down the street from you. I'm like, what? I see this brother
20:03in the south shore. And he gone. Oh, my bad. So, so, what
20:09were your favorite things to eat over in the, you know,
20:11Paris where you at? Some of the famous. I ain't gonna lie
20:14like like it's interesting like French is more French food.
20:20What I experienced cuz first 2 weeks, I spent in Lille which
20:24is a suburb which is where they played the first the the
20:29group play, you know, of the Olympics basketball and that
20:34was a really neat city. It was it was about 2 hours north of
20:38Paris. Really neat. Lots to do. Cool suburb. Downtown was
20:45popping in terms of like nice restaurants, train station,
20:49people just walk around like kind of what you would see
20:52with Paris but sort of like a smaller Paris. I didn't man. I
20:57mean, honestly, the food like there's a lot of pastries. If
21:02you love chocolate, that's the Paris the place to go. Cookies.
21:07Yeah, croissants, all that but a lot of cheese. Everything got
21:12cheese on it but I didn't have like this French meal like I
21:17ate a lot of I ate a lot of Asian food, a lot of different
21:21nationalities at the arena. Gary said, yo, Gary said, give
21:28me the, give me the combo play, man. Yeah. The spare ribs. Did
21:33you, did you, did you find Popeye's over there or
21:35something like that? Yeah, right. They got a KFC over
21:39there. Yup. Show did. Damn, Gary, you was homesick? Gary
21:44was homesick, man. Because the arena food, the arena food was
21:47like terrible. Like the arena food had this, they had this
21:51like really smashed down ham and cheese sandwich. It was
21:55like, no, I'm all set. Like grilled cheese, like something
21:59you make, you make and you put like the dude. So, you can make
22:01it the crib. Yeah. So, you put the iron on it to get the
22:05smashed. It was like, this is, this is what y'all offering?
22:09Man, one night I had French fries. Like Mr. Shuttlesworth
22:12and he got game. One night you had what? French fries and then
22:15it was like, I ain't eating this ham and cheese. Two orders
22:18of fries. So, and then the KFC. The fries weren't even popping.
22:22The fries weren't great. Pretty good. French fries and
22:25French. You gotta, they gotta land on that, right? They gotta
22:28hit that. So, uh the KFC was okay. They had like a lot of
22:33chicken tenders. It wasn't like I could order like a two-piece
22:37or original extra. They don't have like the extra crispy and
22:40all that. They have like, they had like uh tenders and
22:44sandwiches. So, it's a little different kind of KFC but it
22:47was KFC. So, I didn't eat like I had good food like went to
22:52some restaurants in Paris. It was good Thai food, Mexican uh
22:57that I went to a American spotlight. I didn't eat like
22:59this authentic one like I was eating escargot and and all
23:03that. No, no. I mean, I. What about what about the other uh
23:07Olympic events? Did you check anything out? I know you
23:09checked out that break dancing. No, I did not see I did I just
23:13not see your girl from Australia. Uh. Yeah, that was
23:16wild. That was crazy. You know what killed me? There's
23:21brothers. The kangaroo joint was wild. She's trolling. There's
23:26brothers out there who are like 60 years old who got used to
23:29get arrested and locked up for breaking and looking looking at
23:33this and be like, oh, this is what we're doing now. Like this
23:35is this is the event. First of all, y'all took 35 years extra
23:40years to have breaking. I couldn't, you know, like these
23:44old brothers. It's like I couldn't compete back then and
23:46now, right? Right. And that's what that's our sport. That's
23:49what we like. What the hell? Yeah, she ruined it for
23:52everyone, man. That'd be cool to have in LA. Now, it's not
23:55happening. They're going to bring it back. No. So, so which
23:58one did you see that you like another event that you like? I
24:01went to track and field. That was cool. Oh, man.
24:04Atmosphere. The stadium must have been crazy. Yeah, it was
24:07the track and field. I went to track and field. The rest, I
24:10just, I I watched nothing but basketball in person. I didn't
24:14really get a chance to go to a lot of events. Um you know, I
24:17was just watching everything in the front and you know, the TV
24:21in France was like, it was terrible because everything was
24:25in French. They had no. It's supposed to be Gary. It's
24:28supposed to be. Yeah, one English station, BBC. So, if
24:33you want to watch the news, it was that was that was that was
24:37in English. That was it. And they were fascinated with
24:40American um with American politics and news. So, when
24:45Biden stepped down, that was a huge. Oh, man. That must have
24:48been crazy for them, man. You know, and they had some German
24:51stations too uh on the television. So, I watched, you
24:54watched whatever Netflix because and then the Olympic
24:58channel only would show basically team France. So, if
25:01you didn't like team France, they were not showing anything
25:05like, you know, the 100 meters um between Noah like they
25:10weren't, they were showing if if there's a French dude in it
25:14or French athlete, they were showing it. If not, you had to,
25:18you had to try to watch it on your phone or something like
25:20that. So, I mean, it was a lot of just, it was a lot of, it
25:24was a lot of chilling in the room reading or watching
25:26Netflix. Um because French TV. Well, I'll tell you what. I'll
25:32I'll tell you what. Here in the States and I guess Josie
25:36might go along with me. He might not. If I don't see Snoop
25:40Dogg anymore in life, I'll be. Oh, man. You're tired of Snoop
25:45already. Josie, how many times have we seen? Yeah. Yeah, I
25:49read, I read somewhere he got up to about 16 million new
25:54followers. Global followers like brand, you know what I
25:57mean? Like this is. Yeah. I hate to say it Max but this he
26:00might he might be uh he might be popping up left and right in
26:03random spots when he within the next like year or so man. He's
26:06he's trending right now for sure. Globally trended. Yeah.
26:10I mean, I saw him. I did think it was random though Max. When
26:13he first, yeah, when I was like, yo, why is Snoop here?
26:15And then like. Every. He blew up. He was at swimming. He was
26:19at Equestria. He was at, he was uh, you know, went fencing. I
26:23mean, I'm like, damn. I mean, is anybody else in anybody else
26:27there? And uh, you know, it was just kind of crazy to see how
26:31that went and I was like, this is for my podcast. I gotta get
26:35a, a feel for it because like, seemed like he was bigger than
26:38most of the athletes who were there. For real. Yeah. Did you
26:42hear about um, did you hear about real quick? I just
26:44remembered right now. You hear about uh, Dr. Dre wants to,
26:47wants to do uh, he wants to participate in an archery in
26:50the next one. You saw that, huh? That's going to be, he
26:54should be doing shooting. Oh, no, no, no, no. I don't know if
27:01he can top my, my, my boy though. That dude that went
27:03viral, man. My man pulled up with his own pistol, man. That
27:06dude was an assassin. Yeah, I, I thought he might be black. He
27:09had his own pistol. No glasses. No, no armor. He had, he had his
27:14hand in his pocket. I know some brothers in the States is like,
27:18man, I can play that event.
27:22Tryouts, tryouts for the team USA. It's going to be wild in
27:26LA. What a phone number. What a phone number after I get
27:30called a tryout in LA. Wow. You know what I did like? You can
27:36bring your own gun. You can bring your own gun. That's
27:39going to be crazy. I tell you what I did like about France
27:42though. The fact that it was, the way it was, it seemed like
27:45it was culturally so, so good. It was like a lot of the French
27:50culture, the buildings, the stadium, everything was so,
27:54whereas I'm looking at this, this handoff to LA and that
27:59went like, it was like super, I mean, it was like LA, LA on the
28:03beach, which always seemed like, wow, that would seem like
28:06it's going to be too much. It's going to be interesting.
28:10They're trying to make it, they're trying to make LA no
28:12transport, no cars. That's going to work. No way. They're
28:18playing basketball at the new Clippers Arena. They're
28:21playing. I think they're still using the Coliseum for
28:24something. I feel like they have to, right? Because you
28:27have to use, you have to, you can't just have one or two
28:29venues, right? They're turning SoFi into the swimming, into
28:34swimming. The football stadium is going to be where
28:37swimming is. They're moving some stuff around. So, it
28:40should be interesting to see how it goes in LA. LA with no
28:44cars. Is that what you're saying? No car. That ain't
28:46going to work. How the hell is that going to happen? How can I
28:51get to the swap meet over in Crenshaw? He needs his car for
28:58that for sure. Oh, they got the, oh, you're going to tell me
29:01they got the train going over to the swap meet? First of all,
29:05for the tours. You don't take the transportation to LA is
29:11like, growing up, you, you was not going to get, you was not
29:16going to get no girl talking about, I'll beat you on the
29:18butt, on the, on the, on the, you a car, man. Anybody from LA
29:23can attest to this. Growing up, like, the bus was kind of like,
29:26like, you, the first thing you did when you got a piece of
29:30money is buy a car. You could not take, and I know Boston's
29:34got this train line. People do that. Oh, I'll take the green
29:37line to work. Oh no. That's the thing. That's why I hate. I
29:44hate when people complain about the team, man. Cause I'm like,
29:46yo, so many other major cities have it way worse than LA. So
29:51it would be interesting, but yeah, I mean, it was a great
29:54experience. I suggest anybody who can't cover it or go it's,
29:59you know, I'm just disappointed that Boston didn't really, I
30:03know there was, apparently it's going to be like a $10
30:06billion investment. I'm just, because it changes the
30:09complexion of your city. Like I think there'd have been a bunch
30:12of kids growing up now who would have seen that, been in
30:16that atmosphere. I was around, you know, aging myself in 84
30:22when the Olympics were in LA and I went to, believe it or
30:26not, I went to basketball. I was a third row and I, I mean,
30:30after you just go up and buy tickets, I saw the U.S. play
30:33France with Michael, you know, MJ and Ewing and all those
30:36guys. I went to two women's basketball games, uh, with
30:39Cheryl Miller and, and, you know, Lynette Woodard knows
30:43great players. And I went to a baseball game. I took one of
30:46the few things, uh, good memories. Honestly, not to be
30:51funny with my father was me. We went to an Olympic baseball
30:54game at Dodger stadium. Um, and that's still, that was 40 years
30:59ago. And I remember those days. And that's one of the events
31:02they've dropped, right? Yeah. They're bringing baseball back
31:06and put their, aren't they going to, I heard that they're
31:10going to drop the break dancing, the break dancing gone,
31:13man. I think they're bringing one. If you won the Olympic
31:16gold and break dancing, that was it. You got to wait for
31:20Australia, but they bring in lacrosse. I'm ruined it for
31:23everybody. I think lacrosse, cricket, softball, and
31:28baseball. And I think, I think something else, but I know
31:31cricket. Hey, we'll see how that goes. I mean, I ain't seen
31:36no us cricket team. Maybe there is one, um, softball. They're
31:39playing in Oklahoma city because they don't have the
31:42facilities in. So they're going to be playing all the way
31:45across the country. But I would suggest anybody try to get
31:49there. And I, I said, I'm disappointed that Boston
31:51didn't, um, quite honestly, they could be, cause it would
31:56have changed the complexion of the city, you know, you know,
31:59yeah, the traffic would have been crazy, but to have that
32:03event in your city and all those people from all over the
32:06world, just to see the, the international, the people, I
32:10mean, you know, Max, it was, it was just to see, like,
32:12honestly, the journalists from Africa, I know the cover and
32:15they're wearing their color, the colors of their country.
32:18And it's like moving to see, were you wearing the colors of
32:20your country? I was not wearing the colors of our country.
32:23No, like I know, I was talking to our friend, I was talking
32:33to one person. You did not represent one. You said you
32:37went up there, you didn't eat any French food. Then you get
32:40up there and you said, well, I didn't wear no USA jacket. A
32:44lot of journalists from the other countries wear stuff
32:47representing their country. Like we just don't do that. We
32:52don't U.S. U.S. food. Like we don't be, we don't be, we don't
32:57be claiming that's true because everybody knows, man. Everybody
33:00knows, honestly. And I know, I know both of y'all can feel me
33:03on that. When you in another country, people just know you
33:06from America.
33:08You wouldn't see it with a grill, man. Break out with a
33:11damn grill.
33:16That's a dead giveaway.
33:17But I was like, the thing was, it was when you see all the
33:22anthems and you see all the other athletes, the hoopers,
33:26and they sing in their anthems, and it's all awesome. And then
33:30the United States starts to go better. All the U.S. players
33:34like,
33:40because we still use the damn hearing the thing. We, we don't
33:43like, we need to revamp maybe the anthem a little bit because
33:46other anthems, like I was bobbing my head, like the
33:49Serbian anthem, Serbian anthem kind of buffing. And the French
33:54anthem and just see them come around and sing. And we just
33:57don't have that type of like patriotism. So, but you would
34:01see other countries wearing up their country, like Finland and
34:05you know, like, yeah, like they repping. We don't really do
34:09that in the States, but let's tie this in.
34:12It's because we got, we got too used to it, man.
34:15Since we were kids, you got to stand up and look at the flag.
34:20If we'd have Marvin Gaye sing every anthem, we would have
34:24been, that would have been the official anthem.
34:27If you want to make a memory, you got to go to Game Time.

36:16What time is it? Game Time. Let me, let me, we're gonna tie
36:20something in here that we did. We had Ice Cube on. Yeah, we
36:24did. We talked about, we talked about a couple of things. First
36:28of all, I said, you know, when he, I saw him in Boston and so
36:32I walked up to him and he looked at me and he went,
36:35**** cornbread. But we, but we talked to him about the, the
36:42big three and then we talked about, about Olympic three-on-
36:46three basketball. Did you get a chance to see any of the
36:49three-on-three? And we talked to Ice Cube because Ice Cube
36:53wanted to, his team, he wanted his championship team to
36:56challenge the Olympic championship team. Yeah, but
36:58never lose. He was kinda kicked to the waist that they
37:00wouldn't do it but he was a. Yeah, we, first of all, like
37:04Max, like, that, I don't know if y'all, have y'all watched
37:07the three-on-three? That's nonstop, like, that is no, like,
37:11that is, like, you gotta be in mad shape and people think that
37:14you just, it's three big Husky brothers, like, at the park,
37:17like, it used to be posted up, you know, no, no, no, like, you
37:23don't stop. The games are 15 minutes like that, like that,
37:28we've gotta really, and I, I, it's embarrassing for the US to
37:32be terrible and we lost one of them games. We lost it in the
37:35gold medal team, twenty-one to six. Like, that was the final
37:39score. But let me ask you, you think we're still not best
37:42players over? No. One, you got, like, this is what I learned
37:48about it. You have to be in their circuit. Like, you gotta
37:51tour all over the world. So, you could get maybe retired
37:55players who are like or let's say a guy from the G League or
37:59something who's like, you know what? I wanna give up a season
38:01in the G League before the Olympics and I wanna go cuz
38:05they play in the Netherlands. They play in Mongolia. They
38:08play in like three on three hoop outside of United States is
38:12big. Like, it's kind of great. Like, like, I don't know what
38:15we were doing but we just was chilling and all the other
38:19countries was catching up and playing three on three ball. So,
38:22like, we're losing to like Spain and like, you know, we're
38:26losing. It's like a recreational thing out here.
38:28That's true. The Netherlands won the gold. Like, like, well,
38:33now he wants to. Like, yes, we, just when we can't get three
38:37brothers from Boston.
38:41Like, I couldn't believe it. It needs to be like a national
38:46tournament and then they just form the the the best three out
38:49of that or something like that. Yeah. International tour. So,
38:53you can't the what the United States can't do is get three
38:57NBA dudes in 2027. Like, okay, we're gonna get Anthony
39:00Edwards. We're gonna get Cooper or not. People are not in the
39:03Olympic team. Like, we're gonna get three like good NBA
39:08players and just put them on three on three because they
39:11haven't toured. They don't have the points. So, that's the
39:14thing. It would take like these players to have to literally
39:18give up a season and go on this tour to earn the points to be
39:22able to qualify to play. So, the guys who that were over
39:26there, they qualified to play. Like, Jimmer for that. Yes,
39:28they they were in the they were in the circuit. Oh. So, that's
39:33the thing. Um so, the Netherlands, I'm sure Ice Cube
39:37said, did accept but FIBA stepped in and said, it was
39:40y'all didn't give us enough advance notice or whatever.
39:42Right. So, so in response to that, he wants to do an
39:46international tournament in like January with the the big
39:50three all-stars going up against, you know, whether
39:52it's the Netherlands, pick, he's he's said about four or
39:54five countries and he's hoping that the that FIBA will agree
39:57to that. Uh you know, so somewhere around January. It
39:59was good. It was fun to see the big, I went to the game, the
40:02big three game, championship game, and you know, it's a
40:06skill. It's a skill and you still got guys extends careers.
40:09I like it. I liked it. It was good. Green went off. You know,
40:14Gerald Green was a part of the championship team. Um and I
40:18like Gerald. I think Gerald, Gerald, it was a little, I
40:21mean, first of all, like Anthony Edwards saying, dudes
40:25weren't athletes like Gerald Green like was probably the top
40:31one that I don't know top five max with top ten athletes I've
40:35ever seen in terms of his athleticism like my goodness
40:39and he, you know, he's thirty-eight now. Believe it or
40:42not, he's been, it's been 20 years since he came out of uh
40:45high school. Straight from high school, yeah. It was great to
40:48see Gerald win something and I know he's had a hard luck
40:51career and probably came out of, you know, won a dunk
40:53contest but you know, he still wants to play in the league and
40:56he hit six threes. He learned how to shoot. If he had learned
40:59how to shoot 10 years ago like he did now, whoa boy. I mean,
41:03it was good to see those guys. A lot of the guys Cory Brewer
41:07now uh former Florida star teammate for college teammate
41:10Al Horford winning the championship. Gary Payton is the
41:13coach. So, yeah, I think I think the big three could work
41:17international. I think Ice Cube has got a great idea and I
41:21know he's like kind of the guy who got, you know, the NBA
41:25doesn't want to. Let's be honest. Like, why don't they
41:29show these games on ESPN or something? It's like, I've seen
41:33enough cornhole. I've seen enough. Last time we had you
41:38on, you, you, you was watching some, some dude on there.
41:40That's right. They had a brother doing cornhole. I'm
41:44like, that's right.
41:48And Max, y'all, y'all see your slapping game? Y'all seen when
41:51they slap each other? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's right.
41:55That's on TV now. Yeah, that's on TV. They did that. They did
41:59that in the hood for free. Exactly. For real. Like, I'm
42:03going to say brother was like, wait a minute, man. I got
42:05arrested. No, no, no. But the other, your opponent didn't
42:10just let you do that though. I slapped Curtis after he took my
42:14girl. And now, I can go pro. I can go. You could've, you
42:20could've, you could've, you could've, you could've won some
42:22scratch with that, man. You could've. What's going on here?
42:25Like, we're legitimizing stuff that brothers used to get
42:29arrested for. Like, our new president, whoever it is,
42:33hopefully, we'll see who needs to make some adjustments to
42:37these things. You know what? Because there's some brothers
42:39in jail for slapping some, slapping another guy and he
42:42could go pro doing that. Wow. I was surprised though when we
42:46did have Ice Cube on and he went in. We talked to him a
42:49little bit about a bunch of different things. Oh, man. And
42:51one other than that is, you know, because he was the the
42:55commentator. He was the, what was, what was he, Joe Sway, the
42:59narrator, one of the narrators. Oh, yeah, for the 30. 30 for
43:0330. 30 for 30. Yeah, that was starring, starring Sidney
43:08He said he hated. He said he hated. He said, I, and he said,
43:13well, I don't hate anybody. That's what he started off
43:16with. I said, well, I said, how you feel about Emile Carr? And
43:20he went, oh, man. Oh, he went into a whole another circle
43:27when he said Emile Carr's name. It was just absolutely crazy. I
43:31was like, Emile Carr, he said, man, he said, I couldn't stand
43:35that brother. I told you, I told you, there's probably
43:38still a hit on Emile Carr in LA. What's Emile's, what, 68
43:43now? I would tell you security. I'd say, don't go back to LA
43:52without no security. You need to get some security. Don't have
43:57him do this. Max told Cube about the story when he went to
44:05the, when Emile Carr went to Fatburger and they were like,
44:07we ain't serving you, man. Get out of here. Like, of course,
44:12man. What'd you think? You think, you think LA's going to
44:14forgive you? It was like the day after they won the
44:16championship, I think. Right, Max? Yeah. It was, it was that
44:19summer. I tried to tell you, Max. Oh, it was that summer. It
44:23was that summer. That, uh, that anybody who came back to LA
44:28during that summer and we just, we, we just got beat up. Oh,
44:33man. That's hilarious. All right. Lastly, man, before we
44:36get you out of here, Gary, the, uh, the Jalen Brown versus
44:40Nike slash team USA, what's your, what's your take on this
44:42whole thing, man? I mean, like, is it a snub as Jalen and like
44:46got something here and hold up. Hold up. Hold up. Jalen got a
44:53rap song out and you ain't said a word. Like what?
44:55Yo, I was going to bring it up, but I know you didn't hear it.
45:02Like what you think? Cause like I was like, I gotta take, I
45:08gotta take, but what do you think? What do you think about
45:10it? When I think about the rap song, I think he, I think it
45:14was, it was, I think it was a rap song. If he wasn't Jalen
45:19Brown, people be like, oh, this is pretty, this ain't bad. This
45:22ain't bad. But because it's Jalen, you know what I mean?
45:25It's like, eh, it's just, that's just the way it is for
45:27NBA players, man. I'm sorry. Dane Lillard, you know, Alan
45:31Iverson back in the day, even the late great Kobe Bryant,
45:34like you can come with some of the hardest like lyrics, but
45:37it's like, yo man, you're a basketball player, man. Like it
45:39just doesn't resonate the same. You get what I'm saying? Like
45:42I can't think of another, like I heard Shaq back in the day. I
45:46got to hear it, but I heard Shaq was kind of like one of the
45:48better ones that you can sort of say, okay, this fits the
45:52Shaq song with Biggie. Have you ever heard? Oh, that's a great
45:55song. That one I heard. Yeah. You told me to actually, it was
45:58you. Yeah. You told me. Yeah. It was, I looked it up and now
46:00it's on streaming, but yeah. Biggie killed it. Like Biggie's
46:03verses apparently Shaq said, Biggie literally was like, came
46:07into the studio, said, give me a joint. And then 20 minutes
46:11later, he was like, okay, my verses are done. Like when
46:14y'all ready to lay the shot. Like he came in and was like,
46:17like Shaq was all prepared and Biggie came in, did a little
46:20act. And then literally 20 minutes later. Yeah. I've
46:24written my verses. Let's do this. Y'all ready? Because I
46:27got a place else to be and then just killed it. Um, I mean, I
46:33was a little disturbed by Jalen smoking a cigar. Like I
46:36didn't think he was that, you know, like, like, uh, what do
46:40you think about the Swisher line? You know what a Swisher
46:42is? No, what's a Swisher? No, I'm sorry. It's a cigar that's
46:45known for, for rolling something else up. So I was
46:48surprised you dropped that line as well. Yeah. But I don't, I
46:50don't know if that's like a, if that's what he was doing in the
46:53video, but Swishers are definitely, they're not used for
46:56just the cigars, put it that way. So I was a little
46:58surprised by it, Max. I gotta, I gotta play it for you, man.
47:01But again, if you don't know, is Jalen Brown, you'd be like,
47:04this guy's not that bad. But then you know, was Jalen,
47:07you're like, I saw actually saw the video. Yeah. My daughter
47:11turned me onto the video and I was like, when he put the gold
47:14thing on and he starts shaking and then he went into this
47:17whole rap. I'm like, and then we talked about this other
47:22pocket. Who is, who is ASAP Ferg? Like, what does that mean,
47:25man? Okay. So ASAP Ferg, uh, this is like, man, it was like
47:29a decade ago. Uh, the ASAP crew came out and they all sort of
47:33just went, like, they all have their solo careers after the
47:36fact, but it was ASAP Rocky. It was ASAP Ferg, ASAP, there's
47:40like three or four of them and they all started their name
47:42with that. And then like they branched off into their own
47:44solo careers. And I say ASAP Rocky, ASAP Ferg are probably
47:48the ones that are still, uh, still going, still relevant,
47:51but yeah, he's been a fan. ASAP Rocky is, he's married to,
47:55is it Rihanna? Is that who he's married to? Yeah. Yeah. They
48:00got, they have two kids together, I believe, but yeah,
48:02they're married. Yeah. He married to a billionaire. Okay.
48:06He's ASAP, whatever he can be. And because of that, Max, he
48:10dropped an album, like every like six years, man, but yeah,
48:14he's, he's, he's, he's new, but ASAP Ferg, I'd say has had a
48:17couple more, uh, albums in the last few years, but yeah, I
48:21mean, he, see, when you see, when you hear, uh, Ferg take
48:24over, you're like, okay, this is a rapper, rapper, you know
48:26what I mean? But like, again, like, I just feel like the flow
48:30and everything, it isn't bad, but because it's Jalen, it's
48:32like, like, NBA players can't get outside of that.
48:35My regular job, you know, but the fact that NBA finals MVP
48:42dropped a rap track, everybody can rap. Nobody, like not
48:47everybody can rap. And it's just like, first of all, it's
48:51not the only thing he knows. I'm going to show my age, like
48:54this new generation kid y'all talk, um, and they put a beat
48:59on it. Like y'all, like you put Rakim up there, Rakim,
49:03tear these dudes up, Big Eddie Kane, but tear these dudes
49:06apart, like just flow and rhythm.
49:09Yeah. I kind of blame 50 for that, man. 50 kind of started
49:12that whole, like, I'm not singing, but I'm kind of just
49:15like doing the hook, like, you know what I mean?
49:17Like Jay-Z was the, he's the, the Michael Jordan of talking
49:21rappers. Like, dude, you ain't rapping, you talking. Like, I
49:24can hear that. One of my homeboys would do that. Like,
49:27where's the rhythm, the flow? Like, that's me, I'm one of my
49:33age or whatever.
49:35Like back then, I feel like they were told if you don't
49:38change your style, if you keep rapping like this, we're not
49:41going to get on the radio. So I feel like maybe that was part
49:43of it as well, but, but you're right though. People don't
49:46rap the way they used to. The speed is completely slowed
49:49down. Yeah, man. I thought Jalen, I feel like Jalen just
49:54wanted to get that, get some stuff off his chest, but I
49:56feel like there's some subliminals in there as well. Uh,
49:58I don't know about his, you know, the girl that he's with
50:01and, you know, Nike shot that Nike and all that stuff, but
50:03along those lines, like, what do you, what's your, what's
50:06your take on that whole thing? Because I don't, I mean, it's
50:08hard to say from the outside looking in. Look, we, we don't
50:11talk no more about that. My, my house cleaners are here about
50:14to go in my room. They're asking me, so we're going to get
50:17Gary off right now. Oh man. But I was going to say, I was
50:20going to, I was going to ask him about the, the, the Jalen
50:22and Nike thing real quick.
50:25I'll be up with y'all next week. We talked about Lonnie
50:28Walker. Great signing. Yeah, that's right. 15th man, right?
50:33I'm stunned that they, you know, I've written the last
50:37week or so that he's still out there and I'm like, he's only
50:3925. Why is he still not on the minimum deal? And our, you
50:43know, it might be the end of the line for our friend. Oh,
50:46shape reset who I'll get out team and thought he was going
50:52to get paid somewhere else. And now he might have to get a
50:54training camp invite. But I think Lonnie Walker is exactly
50:59what the Celtics need. You need, like I've always said, like
51:02a Jamal Crawford type of dude who come off the bench and get
51:05you some points, get your buckets. When Jason and Jalen
51:08give them a break, you need some scoring. This dude can put
51:12it down. So if you look at his numbers and per minute, I think
51:16that's a great sign. So, uh, you know, so next, next week,
51:21folks, we're going to get into that. Want to thank you
51:24again for coming in. It was a great, although your french
51:28fries, that was some bullshit. You wanted to hear some gourmet
51:32meals. Thank you for coming in with us and uh, we're going to
51:35peace out right now. All right. See y'all.
