Met Office Afternoon Weather Forecast 19/12/23 - Rain clearing, brighter later
Some heavy showers across the northwest. Rain lingering across the southeast but clears up into the afternoon with some sunshine by the end of the day for most of the UK. 00:00 Hello, staying unsettled for many of us in the run up to Christmas, but through the afternoon
00:05 we should see some clearer and drier weather for a time spread across the country. But
00:10 it has been quite a wet start for many areas of the UK. We've had this blanket of cloud
00:14 across the country through this morning. That's been brought by a weather front that has slowly
00:19 been sinking south eastwards through the morning. Behind it is turning much drier and clearer.
00:24 However, you can see the cloud bubbling up. That will allow some showers across the northwest.
00:29 Some of these quite heavy, but there's still some rain to clear the south east through
00:32 the rest of the day. We'll see the rain linger across parts of Kent and Essex into the afternoon.
00:38 But for many areas it should improve over the course of the afternoon. Bit of sunshine
00:42 to come out by the end of the day. However, as I said, showers are developing across more
00:47 north and western areas and a brisk north westerly breeze as well. So that will bring
00:53 a much colder feel to the end of the day. Temperatures are likely going to drop a couple
00:56 of degrees by the end of the afternoon. However, in the far south east where the cloud does
01:01 linger, it should stay fairly mild at least through the first part of the evening. But
01:06 for many of us it will be a colder night tonight as we've got fresher air and clearer spells
01:12 developing particularly for more eastern areas, parts of East Anglia into the south east as
01:16 well as eastern areas of Scotland, north east and England. It should stay clear and dry
01:20 through much of the night. Further west though, you're more likely to see a shower, particularly
01:25 across parts of western Scotland, Northern Ireland, north west England as well, where
01:29 we see a brisk breeze continuing through much of the night. As a result, temperatures will
01:34 be held up across these western areas. But in the east where we see those clearer skies,
01:38 we could see a touch of grass frost by tomorrow morning. So a colder feel to the start of
01:43 the day. And it should be a fine start to the day. But on Wednesday afternoon, we do
01:47 see the next frontal system move in from the northwest. It's a warm front, so it should
01:52 introduce milder air, but it's been brought by a very strong jet stream and that will
01:57 allow our winds to strengthen in towards Thursday. So we're expecting a very windy day for many
02:02 northern areas of the UK on Thursday. However, on Wednesday, as I said, a fairly fine start
02:08 to the day, particularly the further south and east you are. But from the north and west,
02:12 cloud will thicken through the day and we'll see some drizzly rain starting to arrive.
02:17 This could be quite persistent, particularly over the high ground and coastal areas close
02:21 to Irish Sea coast as well, as well as parts of north western Scotland. There'll also be
02:26 a strengthening breeze on Wednesday. It'll be a windier day, I think, than this afternoon
02:30 here in the south and east. So it should stay largely dry. But by the end of the day, it'll
02:35 be much cloudier than the start of the day. We have got a warm front moving in, as I said,
02:41 on Wednesday. So that means temperatures will rise. It will be a slightly warmer day than
02:45 the end of Tuesday. However, with the strength of that breeze, I think the temperatures will
02:50 be slightly tempered. The winds pick up once again into Thursday and there is a broad wind
02:56 warning in force for many areas of the UK. If you'd like any more details on that, you
