00:00 He showed up on the patio by the door.
00:03 He wasn't able to move and he was having trouble breathing.
00:06 I am Kim and this is "Ghost Story" for GO Beats.
00:09 Here's Ghost Stories.
00:10 I walked up to him and got closer.
00:12 I had my husband get a carrier and he walked right into the carrier.
00:15 Hi, buddy. It's all right.
00:17 He smelled like a literal garbage can.
00:19 He smelled horrible.
00:20 You could tell that humans had let him down.
00:22 I took him to the vet.
00:26 His tongue and the roof of his mouth were covered in cuts and sores.
00:30 And the vet said more than likely he was probably digging through trash and eating
00:34 stuff that he may not have supposed to have been eating.
00:37 His ears were infected.
00:38 His eyes were infected.
00:39 It took him two vet visits to start to look like a cat and not something like a wild animal,
00:47 you know, like a raccoon or something.
00:48 He's got wounds that I want to wash on him.
00:50 When I was trying to clean up his wounds, he bit me very hard.
00:54 And because I didn't know his history, I ended up having to go to the hospital and get a series of shots.
01:00 I said to myself, he's only acting like he's scared.
01:03 So I don't care how hard this is going to get.
01:06 I'm not going to be another human to let him down.
01:08 What did they do?
01:11 So every day when I fed him, gently cleaned him up, I'd go on his terms.
01:16 I'd let him sniff me.
01:17 I didn't rush getting him comfortable with me.
01:20 Ghosts took about three months to warm up to me.
01:23 Oh, that's a good sign.
01:25 The more he learned he could trust us, the more he started showing his personality.
01:31 You cozy in my scent?
01:33 He would go for the toy basket.
01:35 So you could tell that he knew what certain things were.
01:38 He would gravitate towards sleeping in our cat tree or our little cat bed.
01:42 He loves kids.
01:44 He would play with my granddaughter.
01:45 There's kids in the neighborhood that know him.
01:47 He hears them and he waits by the door.
01:49 So sometimes I will accompany him out there to visit the kids.
01:53 Now his eyes are clear.
01:54 His ears are clean.
01:55 He smells amazing.
01:57 Your ears look so much better.
01:59 Yeah.
02:01 So do your eyes and your nose too.
02:04 Yeah, look at you.
02:05 One vet says he's about three years old.
02:07 Another vet says he's about 13 years old.
02:10 And the reason they can't come to a consensus is because they use teeth as an indicator for
02:15 how old a cat is.
02:16 And his teeth were so bad from, I guess, eating the trash that they can't decide exactly how old he is.
02:22 I would say humans had to have ignored him for a year at least.
02:26 And that's one of the reasons I named him Ghost, other than his color.
02:29 It's because I said to myself, this cat is walking around neighborhoods.
02:33 Nobody sees how bad he looks.
02:35 It's like he's invisible.
02:36 When Ghost showed up on the patio, he looked dejected, rejected, depressed.
02:41 Now he's happy, playful, loving, and kind.
02:44 And it's, to me, one of the best things I've ever seen.
02:48 This is his forever home.
02:50 I will never let him down.
