NECA Universal Monsters The Invisible Man Figure
Transcript
00:00 Now you see him, now you don't. Here's your look at the NECATOY's Universal Monsters, the Ultimate Invisible Man.
00:07 [music]
00:35 For the 90th anniversary of Universal's sci-fi horror film classic, NECA is excited to reveal the Invisible Man in ultimate action figure form.
00:43 Starring Claude Rains, the 1933's The Invisible Man was based on the classic H.G. Wells novel and received critical acclaim,
00:50 eventually being placed on the U.S. National Film Registry in its historical significance.
00:55 The interchangeable heads capture the seemingly solid rat version, as well as partially uncovered versions that peaks the insane emptiness within.
01:04 Also included are interchangeable wrapped and gloved hands, goggles, nose, notebook, wig, and a cup with straw.
01:10 Just before anything on this figure starts to fade, let's grab the tape measure and see how tall the Universal Monsters Invisible Man stands.
01:17 And I will in a second be bringing in also the other Universal Monster figures that the folks over at NECATOY's have made in the past.
01:23 Invisible Man though, stands as you can see about 7 inches in height, or the figure is going to be about 18 centimeters tall.
01:31 Not necessarily in a particular order, but let's bring in some of the other Universal Monster figures we've gotten from the folks over at NECATOY's,
01:37 starting first with Bela Lugosi's Dracula, then off to the side we can also bring in the colorized version though of the Frankenstein's monster.
01:44 One thing you'll probably still be noticing as we bring in the rest of these figures is the fact that they're all going to be colorized versions,
01:49 because of course we don't have ourselves a black and white version yet of the Invisible Man.
01:52 By the way, there is the Bride of Frankenstein.
01:54 Off to the side there's the Wolfman, and then just off to the other side again, we're filling up a lot of space real fast.
02:01 There's the Gill Man from the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
02:03 He's still, can you see him? We'll just move him over.
02:06 Obviously he's the tallest of the batch.
02:08 We also had a look at the Mummy.
02:10 And the most recent I think in fact we had a look at was the Phantom of the Opera.
02:14 One little course correction I did want to make to the Phantom of the Opera's review was the fact I did mention that he had a cane.
02:20 We all know that's in fact actually a snorkel. I don't know really why I actually called it a cane in the review.
02:25 You can see there's quite a lot of characters that we've gotten so far.
02:28 And that pretty much covers most if not all the territory.
02:31 There's still Quasimodo. I don't know if many would consider that to be a true Universal Monster figure.
02:35 That's only the one other figure I can think of that could still deliver us.
02:39 As for the figure's accessories, Invisible Man does quite good for himself.
02:43 First the figure comes in clear with the smallest of accessories.
02:46 One that fell on the floor the moment I was taking everything out of the tray.
02:49 I literally have his nose.
02:51 The nose itself was loose and it just happened to be next to the beaker that had the straw.
02:56 And as I was taking out the beaker, the nose took a tumble.
02:58 And luckily when it did take a tumble I just happened to catch it with the corner of my eye.
03:02 And I was able to retrieve it.
03:04 If you don't happen to retrieve the nose that comes with your Invisible Man, you'll be happy to know as well,
03:08 the Folklore Neck of Toys includes another two noses that you can have displayed.
03:12 We really don't have necessarily a table.
03:14 I hope at some point we do get ourselves, as we've gotten already with the Dracula accessories set,
03:19 the Frankenstein and the Mummies accessories set,
03:21 I hope we actually get ourselves a little lab table that could come included for the Invisible Man.
03:26 Because I'm sure then there'll be a place to put these noses.
03:28 As it is right now, other than just having two bags in the nose, two nose in the bag, as you can see,
03:35 there's really no other place to store these right now.
03:37 What I might just ultimately do is open up the bag as it's already open right now,
03:41 and put the third nose in there, and seal it up shut, so I'm not going to be losing it anywhere.
03:46 What could possibly be lost as well is that the figure comes included with a toupee or hairpiece.
03:52 From a distance, it actually kind of looks more like a crow.
03:55 [Crow noise]
03:56 But in fact, it is a hairpiece.
03:58 Again, we don't really have a place to store any of these things yet.
04:01 I'm going to see if I can actually find myself a serviceable enough figure-sized table,
04:06 where I can actually put all the things on there until eventually we get ourselves, I hope at least,
04:09 a table to go for the Invisible Man.
04:11 Those are the smaller of the accessories, as we work our way up a little bit bigger.
04:15 The figure also comes included with his beaker.
04:17 The beaker does have the straw. The straw, unfortunately, is a little bit bent.
04:20 Be careful, of course, taking this out, not only for the risk of losing the nose that's right next to it,
04:25 but also just because this is a very thin plastic, and the straw seems very likely to be bent,
04:30 as you can already see with mine. Mine is a little on the more warped side.
04:34 He does have a gripping hand, at least, to hold the beaker.
04:37 That's one of the next things we're going to be having a look at.
04:39 The figure also comes included with his journal book, making sure, of course, I've got it flipped around the right way.
04:44 You wouldn't be able to replicate the formula that he made, simply just because we're only getting two pages,
04:48 and there's no real means to flip the pages, as it's just a molded book.
04:52 It's a nice journal, though. Again, I hope, again, we can find something to put this onto,
04:56 but a nice little book, nonetheless.
04:58 The figure also comes included with a pair of goggles.
05:01 Now, you'll notice right now the figure already has goggles on the existing head that he has.
05:05 However, though, the figure also comes included with two alternate heads,
05:09 one that is actually just, as you can see, visible eyes, or open eye sockets,
05:13 an open nose cavity, and a little opening for his mouth.
05:16 And then there's this one that kind of looks like either Terrence or Philip from South Park.
05:21 [imitates car horn]
05:23 Hey, Terrence! Anybody remember South Park?
05:25 I hope everybody's still watching South Park. It's been, actually, a while since I've seen an episode of South Park.
05:29 Kind of looks like Terrence or Philip.
05:31 Anyone from, really, from Canada.
05:32 I guess, really, based on that, my mouth should also work the exact same way.
05:36 Terrence and Philip. Hilarity ensues.
05:38 In case, also, you were curious, not that it really does belong there,
05:42 but you can kind of take one of the noses--
05:44 Oh, let's just hope I don't drop it.
05:46 You can take one of the noses, sort of wedge that in there.
05:48 Kind of makes it look a little silly. It doesn't really belong there.
05:51 In case anybody was going to throw that question out in the comments section,
05:54 "Can you take the loose nose and put it into the nasal cavity of the mask?"
05:57 The answer to that is yes.
05:59 Doesn't really fit in properly, mind you.
06:01 But what you can do, though, is the goggles.
06:03 The goggles do fit over top of his existing head, or at least this head.
06:07 Be careful, though, while putting this across, just because it's very thin plastic.
06:12 The few times I've already done this, I just feel--
06:15 I fret the whole time, just because, again, like, fitting this over top of his head,
06:19 it goes either over this head, or you can also display it on this head.
06:23 Which, I guess, really, between the two, this one makes the most sense,
06:25 just because it already has a nose and, again, part of his hair already sticking out.
06:28 This one already having only just the nasal cavity and only the eye sockets.
06:32 Probably will not be a good idea to probably use it with the goggles.
06:35 You know, it's entirely up to you.
06:37 We're going to get back to those heads in a moment.
06:39 The figure also comes included with a couple of gloved hands.
06:42 The gloved hands are both a gripping hand and a more relaxed gestured hand.
06:46 And then he also comes included with these hands as well,
06:49 which I happen to be using at the beginning of this review.
06:51 These hands, the wrapped hands, does have a gripping hand, like I said, for holding the book.
06:55 So let's go back and bring back in the journal.
06:57 If you wanted to, you could put the journal in between the thumbs and the finger.
07:01 Just get the thumb actually around there.
07:04 And if you want to maybe have it closer to the spine, the figure can hold the book with ease.
07:08 With ease? Upside down with ease.
07:10 It's going to hold it perfectly fine.
07:12 And then the other hand, literally on the other hand, the figure also can hold the beaker,
07:16 which, again, I did have at the beginning of this review.
07:19 So he really has serviceable enough hands to really hold all the accessories he comes included with,
07:24 even though really the accessories he only comes included with is the beaker and the book.
07:28 Getting though a closer look though at the Invisible Man,
07:31 this is the stock defaulted head as I tap away at his temple.
07:35 This is what the defaulted head sculpt looks like when you get him first out of his tray.
07:38 But again, you can then swap it out with the other heads that we'll be looking at more in a moment.
07:43 This one does already have the goggles.
07:45 The goggles don't appear to be removable, nor is the nose.
07:48 A nice bandaged face though.
07:50 You have the little peaked out areas of the hair sticking out the top of his head.
07:53 I like the way that this one's been sculpted quite a lot.
07:56 There really isn't a lot of paint.
07:58 I'm guessing they probably would have painted the head the way that it is.
08:01 I can't imagine that they probably would have molded it in the bandaged colors.
08:04 Because if you look at the upside down,
08:06 it looks like it's just a little bit of a lighter shade than the color that we're looking at right now.
08:10 So they probably would have hand painted, or likely just factory painted, of course, the head sculpt,
08:14 and painted the goggles over top with the nose and then the hairs.
08:17 A nice looking head sculpt.
08:19 But though if you did want to change it, it's just a case of popping the head off the ball joint.
08:23 The first time I did do this, by the way, I went...
08:26 I didn't actually make a popping noise, but when I first popped it out,
08:29 I thought, "Where did the ball joint go?"
08:31 Until I realized it was way down in the collar area of the shoulders.
08:35 And if you want to swap it out with this head sculpt, we're just going to pop this in place right now.
08:39 Again, where we started, where we went to now.
08:43 This one's okay. It's definitely not my favorite.
08:46 Or if you want to have a little more of an interesting way of displaying the figure,
08:50 that little Terrence and Phillip head sculpt,
08:52 what you can do is, again, it's got a hole on the bottom of it.
08:56 Just tuck it inside the collar, push it down just enough,
09:00 and you've got yourself part where his mouth is now visible,
09:03 but because, of course, he's invisible, you can't even see where the rest of his face is.
09:06 It's a really interesting way of displaying the figure.
09:09 Although I will say, putting this down actually onto the ball joint,
09:12 I would request, I would probably suggest, not necessarily put a lot of pressure on this.
09:17 If you do put a lot of pressure where it gets lodged then onto the ball joint,
09:20 trying to yank this off, you only have just a little lip of plastic right here,
09:25 and you really wouldn't want this to tear.
09:27 So, I mean, it's more than enough.
09:28 It's serviceable enough just to tuck it in as far as I have it right now.
09:31 Still easy enough to remove, but just tuck it enough that it stays in place,
09:35 and then you don't have to worry about, again, breaking that plastic if possible.
09:39 As for the rest of his outfit, he does have his jacket.
09:42 The jacket, it seems like it probably would have been, based on, as you can see,
09:46 the little crease-lined colors, a more lighter coloring of blue,
09:49 and then they would have painted a darker blue over top of it.
09:51 He has a handkerchief on the one side, a lighter blue tie on the inside,
09:55 and you can see, like in the movie, the jacket sits quite baggy on the figure's body.
09:59 Coloring matches nicely there on the sleeve,
10:02 and again, he's got himself the wrapped gloves there on either side.
10:04 Changing out the hands, by the way,
10:06 it's just a case of removing the hands from where they are right now,
10:09 and then just take yourself, of course, the hands that you want to swap it out,
10:12 just pop those in place.
10:13 I'm sure one of the other questions somebody probably was going to ask me is,
10:16 "We also had a look at the Jada Toys Invisible Man from Universal Monsters,
10:20 and remember, the figure came included with this particular hand."
10:24 Now, if anyone was going to be throwing out the question into the viewing audience
10:27 as to whether you could use these hands, the answer is yes.
10:30 Just take the hands and remove them from the forms,
10:32 even though these don't technically come included with the figure.
10:35 Just pop these in place.
10:36 And if you don't mind the fact that they're obviously a different color than the rest of the hands,
10:40 you could technically use--just bend the hand here--
10:42 you could technically use the one that we got from Jada Toys,
10:45 even though really, technically, it was never included with this figure.
10:48 So I like that.
10:49 At least they're using a similar-sized peg.
10:51 Most of these figure hands tend to be using universal-sized pegs.
10:55 Let's just pop the proper hands in place.
10:57 And I guess really, while we are removing one of them,
11:00 I mean, there's nothing really to say that you can't just leave one of the hands off anyways,
11:04 as he is invisible after all.
11:06 It would look as if he basically has just an invisible hand.
11:10 For the purpose, though, of posability, let's pop these hands back in place.
11:14 And just before we actually get to that, I just want to show you guys what the legs look like.
11:17 I feel like I've seen these legs from before, possibly Jason Voorhees.
11:21 I see a crease line right here.
11:23 I just happen to have a Jason Voorhees off to the side.
11:26 I had kind of inspected it earlier,
11:28 and it doesn't seem to be the case that they're using the same legs,
11:31 possibly they may have even used the same legs for...
11:34 Let's just grab Phantom of the Opera. I'm just curious.
11:38 No, actually, if you look at the wrinkles there on the inside of his thighs,
11:41 they're not the same wrinkle placement as the one we get here from the Phantom of the Opera.
11:45 Obviously, the legs look like they're a little bit different from one another.
11:48 They're pretty close, though, so they might have done a little bit of new tooling for that.
11:52 Anyways, though, for the figure's articulation...
11:55 Do you want to stick with this head sculpt still? OK.
11:58 This head sculpt still works the same way on the ball joint.
12:01 Just cautionary when it comes to rotating the figure's head,
12:04 because you don't want to start to twist the plastic.
12:06 But the head works basically the same way. You know what? I'll just pop that off right now.
12:09 Pop the other head sculpt in place.
12:11 It's going to be a lot easier to move the head up and down.
12:13 So it does move up, it does move down, and you can move it back and forth as well.
12:16 The figure does have a full rotation on the head.
12:19 Also, as well, I did want to mention, too, that the figure does have a ball joint right here.
12:22 So at the top of the neck, there is a hinge joint.
12:24 But at the bottom, because that's sitting on its own ball joint,
12:27 it does have a ball joint at the base of the neck.
12:29 So it's technically in two places.
12:31 You'd lose a little of that, obviously, when you get to this head sculpt,
12:34 just because, again, it's only really relying on the one ball joint.
12:36 It's going to lose it up here, where his open mouth would be.
12:39 As for his arms, the arms do rotate all the way around, both sides.
12:42 Arms hinge out.
12:44 And I noticed, though, with the arms, when it comes to hinging them,
12:46 they don't quite hinge fully at 90 degrees.
12:48 Right here, it's telling me, "Don't push it any further."
12:51 So I would be willing to write off and say that it sits at around 45 degrees.
12:56 If you can get a little higher than that, then you can get a little higher than that.
12:59 But it does seem like there's definitely resistance happening right now.
13:02 But again, it does rotate all the way around.
13:04 The figure only has a single hinge in the elbow,
13:06 but it allows at least the forearm to rotate back and forth.
13:08 And the hands, as well, rotate all the way around.
13:10 As for the Invisible Man's upper body, it is on a ball joint.
13:14 And because, again, this is softer plastic,
13:16 it sort of does make him a little fuller in the abdomen area.
13:19 But again, he still rotates all the way around on an abdomen ball joint.
13:23 Legs do split out. They are on ratcheted joints, once again.
13:26 Legs go forward. Legs go back.
13:28 There is a swivel at the top of the thigh.
13:30 And the whole time I'm also doing, as well, you notice,
13:32 and probably hear for yourself, an awful squeaking.
13:36 It's just probably the plastic rubbing in on itself.
13:38 This is also not a soft plastic,
13:41 so it's just probably like plastic on plastic rubbing against one another.
13:44 The figure does have a single hinge, again, only on the knee.
13:47 It allows at least the lower leg to rotate.
13:49 Feet, once again, move up and down this way and back and forth, too.
13:53 I did mention earlier that you could use, technically,
13:55 the hand that came included with Jada Toys.
13:57 Speaking of Jada Toys, just in case somebody was curious,
14:00 I don't tend to usually bring in, when it comes to comparisons,
14:03 toys from other figure companies, just because, again,
14:05 I like to keep like to like.
14:07 If you are solely only just collecting NECA toys,
14:09 then you're probably not going to be collecting any of the stuff from Jada Toys.
14:12 But I did want to bring in at least the Jada Toys release of Invisible Man,
14:15 so you guys can see there's quite a size difference, really, between the two.
14:18 Despite that, though, Jada Toys still seem to have a similar sized hand.
14:22 And with that being the case, of course,
14:24 because they're also using the same size pegs.
14:26 If you wanted to, overlooking, of course,
14:28 the fact that the colors are completely much brighter here on the Invisible Man from Jada Toys,
14:32 yeah, in fact, you could use the same hands and use them on this Invisible Man instead.
14:37 The Invisible Man is one of those rare cases where actually losing the hand
14:41 benefits the look of the figure.
14:42 Now, you could even take it to the extreme of having the figure missing a head
14:45 and missing a hand, but I don't think I want to push it that far of a dial.
14:48 Instead, what I'd rather do is pull it back a bit,
14:50 probably have the figure, I think, displayed with one hand missing,
14:53 and then have the partially bandaged face,
14:55 which I think is a really neat thing that they included with this figure.
14:58 It gives you the illusion of what he would look like invisible
15:01 without completely removing the head altogether.
15:04 As for the figure's accessories, we've already looked at the fact
15:07 he comes only included with the journal and the beaker.
15:09 I said it was a straw. It might have actually even been a stirring stick.
15:11 But the figure also, above that, comes included with a pair of noses.
15:14 It might be the only time, I probably even see myself saying this,
15:18 but the only time we've ever gotten ourselves noses to come included with figures.
15:21 Of course, for the obvious sizing of what those noses would be,
15:24 very easy to lose.
15:26 That one extra one, even though it really does have a tray slot in the figure packaging,
15:30 I might just ultimately put it back into the bag with the other two noses.
15:33 So at least I know those noses are in a safe place.
15:36 Can you imagine we're even having this conversation?
15:38 The figure also has a toupee, but all of these don't really have any purpose
15:42 until really down the road. Let's hope, fingers crossed,
15:44 NECA does release an accessory set for the Invisible Man.
15:48 I mean, really, that Invisible Man accessory set could be getting a lot of mileage
15:51 as they could also release it down the road for a Victor Frankenstein accessory set.
15:55 Just changing out some of the things that are on top of the table.
15:58 What do you guys think of the figure? Let me know down below in the comments section.
16:00 Have you had the chance to pick up the NECA's Universal Monster Invisible Man?
16:03 And if you have, how do you have the figure displayed?
16:06 Let me know down below in the comments section.
16:07 Also, hey, if you guys enjoyed this video, I want to hit it with a like.
16:09 If you guys are loving the content you guys are seeing and you'd like to stick around for more,
16:13 just because we are wrapping things up, that joke doesn't just work for Mummy alone,
16:17 just because we are wrapping things up now for the Invisible Man does not mean,
16:20 does not mean that NECA reviews are all done on this channel.
16:22 In fact, we have a whole bunch of them actually coming your way.
16:25 So if you want to come back to this channel on a regular basis, please do. Thank you.
16:29 As always, guys, thanks for watching. See you guys next time.
