People from Virginia to Massachusetts should prepare for a major snowstorm this weekend.
Transcript
00:00 I say this all the time.
00:02 My friends storms do not stop at state lines and the one I'm
00:06 looking at right here in California is no exception.
00:09 This storm is going to move across the country and really
00:12 give us something to think about over the next week or so.
00:15 And as we head into the weekend,
00:17 this could be our first big winter storm of the year for
00:20 many of our northeast and mid Atlantic cities.
00:22 Now, as we head into Thursday and Friday,
00:24 here it goes across the Southern Plains.
00:26 We end up with snow back to the north,
00:28 rain back to the south, soaking areas like Texas,
00:30 where we are going to see some rain even earlier this week.
00:33 So we're going to keep a close eye on that flooding and flash
00:35 flooding potential.
00:36 And again, keeping a close eye on a bit of winter further to
00:38 the north.
00:39 But here's the thing.
00:40 As this storm moves across the Southern Plains and out toward
00:42 the Gulf, it really picks up on the Gulf moisture at the same
00:45 time as high pressure is helping to work in some cold air from
00:48 the north.
00:49 That is so important.
00:51 We need the cold air to get winter to happen in the
00:54 northeast.
00:55 That makes sense, right?
00:56 We haven't had that injection of cold air yet,
00:58 so we really haven't seen much northeast snow.
01:00 Now, as that cold air precedes the storm on Friday night and the
01:03 storm strengthens as it moves further to the north and east,
01:06 that combination can help us develop, again,
01:09 that first big winter storm back into the mid Atlantic and
01:12 northeast.
01:13 And you can see what we're looking at as our snow potential
01:15 here Saturday and Sunday.
01:16 From Cincinnati to Pittsburgh, back toward even, yes,
01:19 New York.
01:20 We're looking at you, southern New England,
01:22 and into the southern tier of upstate New York as well.
01:25 Mid Atlantic, we are looking at some accumulating snow into
01:27 cities, even like Philadelphia.
01:29 And in terms of that potential for six or more inches of snow,
01:32 here are some of the cities that we're eyeing up right now.
01:35 Harrisonburg, Virginia, Hagerstown, Maryland,
01:37 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where, yeah,
01:39 we've seen a few lake effect flakes,
01:41 but this would certainly be a bigger event at this point in
01:43 the year.
01:44 Even Harrisburg and Scranton, Pennsylvania,
01:46 we'll be watching you closely as we move into this coming
01:48 weekend.
01:49 Stick with us as we continue to track this storm here on
01:51 AccuWeather.
