00:00 The reason this league is as soft as it is,
00:03 is because of them damn Detroit Pistons.
00:05 They were the ones that made this league soft.
00:08 - Hell, hell no.
00:10 - Oh, it's their fault?
00:11 It's like that?
00:11 - No, no, no, no.
00:12 - You know what?
00:13 No, no, no, no, no.
00:14 - No, Brent, I can't let you--
00:15 - Michael Jordan, they were protecting Michael Jordan,
00:17 and then the rules of the game changed.
00:19 You guys did not only foul once.
00:22 I love that shit.
00:23 I was telling somebody shit the other day.
00:24 I said Detroit had the shit where they would foul you once,
00:27 but that gave the other dude a chance.
00:29 You foul you once, you foul you twice.
00:31 You'd be like--
00:32 - You guys would make sure that you guys
00:33 didn't ram around, get the foul door?
00:35 - No, no.
00:36 The funny thing is that we knew, okay,
00:38 like Dominique would come to the hole.
00:40 Do you remember how Nique would come up to the hole?
00:42 We'd foul him once, and then next year we fouling him again
00:45 because it's like, we told you don't get up in here
00:48 and try to dunk on our ass.
00:50 We gonna try to, you know, you come here,
00:51 you gonna feel that floor.
00:53 But it was just to fun.
00:54 You know, it was more of the competition
00:57 where did we change the rules
01:00 or did you wanna market certain people?
01:04 And then on the league, and Michael was the new generation.
01:07 You know, you'd had Doc who was older.
01:10 You had Bird who got older.
01:12 You had Magic who was getting older.
01:14 Who was gonna take the league to the next level?
01:16 And so, you know, David Stern and them said,
01:18 okay, this is gonna where we're gonna have Michael.
01:21 And then now all of a sudden everything is individualized.
01:24 (upbeat music)
01:27 - The Cedric Maxwell podcast is brought to you by FanDuel,
01:36 the exclusive wagering partner of the CLNS Media Network.
01:40 - All right, it's another episode
01:42 of the Cedric Maxwell podcast.
01:43 I'm Josue Pavone joined by, of course,
01:46 my co-host Cedric Maxwell, bringing in the new year.
01:49 Hope everyone had a great new year, safe holiday.
01:52 And we got a special guest, man.
01:53 We're coming into 2024 with a very special guest.
01:56 He's Rick Mahorn, 89 Pistons champion.
01:59 He's in his 20th season as the radio commentator
02:04 for Pistons Radio.
02:05 He's Rick Mahorn.
02:06 He's on the Cedric Maxwell podcast.
02:08 What's going on, Rick?
02:08 How are you doing?
02:09 - I'm doing great, sir.
02:10 I'm very, you know, very excited
02:13 of being on this podcast with Cedric.
02:15 - No, no, no, hold on, hold on, hold on a second, man.
02:17 We keep it a hundred here, man.
02:18 That wasn't, that's not the Rick Mahorn
02:20 I was just speaking with.
02:21 - No, no, you, you saying a hundred,
02:23 you keep it a hundred, not 100.
02:26 - I didn't say 100.
02:28 - You old fake carper.
02:31 - I didn't say it right, you're right, you're right.
02:32 - Lost on the end, whatever you are.
02:34 Anyway, what's good, man?
02:35 What's good?
02:37 - Nothing much, man.
02:38 You tell me, you're on the road out West.
02:40 Something's getting ready to take on
02:41 that same Utah Jazz team.
02:43 But of course, we're gonna talk about the Pistons
02:45 and the rest of the NBA, but how are you doing?
02:47 How was your new year?
02:48 - Oh, my new year is great.
02:49 I mean, I made it into 2024.
02:53 I guess I'm still the same as I was in 2023,
02:56 just a couple of days older.
02:58 - Broke the streak, baby.
02:59 That's what I'm talking about.
03:01 - We should have broke it when we played y'all last week.
03:05 - Yeah, I saw that one coming.
03:07 Yo, what were you two talking about, by the way?
03:10 By the way, for our viewers out there,
03:12 if you're not a stranger to the media section
03:13 during the Sullivan and Pistons game, this is common.
03:16 But I wanna know in this particular situation,
03:18 with a 27-game losing streak on the line,
03:21 what were you two yapping about?
03:23 - Let me, I'll go first then, since I'm the senior here.
03:26 Rick was giving me some,
03:28 he was giving me some shit early on,
03:30 'cause they went ahead by 20 points.
03:32 And I kept telling him, I said, "Just wait, just wait."
03:36 And eventually we reeled their asses in,
03:39 and I turned around and did like a fishing hook
03:41 and grabbed my boy and I balled him back in.
03:43 But they played well.
03:45 And what surprised me about all that, Rick,
03:48 is really how can a team lose so many games
03:52 and they play that hard?
03:53 Those dudes play hard, man.
03:55 And I'm just shocked that they can lose that many games.
03:58 - Well, the fact that you say that they play hard,
04:00 you have to play hard every night, Brad.
04:02 We played against everybody.
04:05 It didn't matter who it was or what the score was,
04:07 'cause sometimes people underestimate what your ability is.
04:11 And these young men have a great ability.
04:14 It's just trying to get it 48 minutes altogether.
04:17 Some day, you'll go like,
04:18 "Okay, you'll have three great quarters."
04:21 But then that fourth, one of those quarters, you go,
04:24 "Oh, man."
04:25 But I mean, ever since the game against you guys
04:29 up there in Boston, it's been a total turnaround
04:32 as far as intensity.
04:33 And that's what you need to have, intensity and identity.
04:36 And hopefully these last couple of games
04:39 that we even started in this new year, we've lost one.
04:43 It was kind of ugly at the second half,
04:45 but the first half against the Houston Rockets
04:47 was a very good game.
04:49 And then that second half, the turnovers.
04:52 And then last night, the game against the Jazz,
04:55 it was the turnovers.
04:56 And so when you have a team that's,
04:58 have the youth, but also some of the veterans,
05:02 like even last night watching Bondanovich
05:06 go off on his old Utah team and Alex Burks,
05:11 they played, it was like, it was one of those,
05:13 like a heavyweight fight.
05:16 And it went into overtime and you go,
05:19 "Hey, we can get it, we can get it."
05:21 But hey, sometimes you don't get this call or that call,
05:25 but you know how it is.
05:26 It's basketball, it's always ebbs and flows of this game.
05:29 And I'm just hoping that the Pistons can right the ship
05:33 a little bit more, especially in 2024.
05:36 - Well, the thing that really more so amazed me
05:38 about that game in Boston was your statement after the game.
05:43 First time I hear Rick saying,
05:46 you know, he said, "Brad, that was a good game.
05:49 That was a good-ass game."
05:50 (laughs)
05:51 - Yes, it was.
05:52 - And you and I, we see so many games,
05:55 we've been around so long, you're going,
05:56 "Yeah, that was a game."
05:58 But that was a good hard-fought game.
06:01 Your guys played hard, the Southwicks played hard,
06:04 and the Southwicks, you know,
06:05 the Southwicks were trying not to be that team,
06:08 to get off that, let Detroit off that losing streak,
06:12 and that fortunate for Southwicks were able to do it.
06:14 I want to ask you about, you know,
06:16 this league and how it's played,
06:17 because obviously you were one of the more physical guys
06:22 ever in this league.
06:23 You and, I don't know why it comes at you and Charles Oakley.
06:26 That's always a, "Rick Mahon, Charles Oakley,
06:28 Rick Mahon, Charles Oakley."
06:29 That's all I hear.
06:30 And I remember you teaching, you know,
06:33 Charles Oakley the ropes when he first got in this league.
06:36 - Well, the thing is, Bridget, you know,
06:38 we come from HBCUs, and every time you look at it,
06:42 we always had to fight, you know,
06:44 between Oakley or even Ben Wallace.
06:47 Guys, even like today's,
06:49 we have Robert Covington in from Tennessee State.
06:52 It's always been understated that we went to a small,
06:55 you know, went to a historically black college
06:58 where you say, "Oh, they really ain't had
06:59 no basketball players there."
07:01 But if you look at the history, I mean, come on, man.
07:03 You look at the history, you got guys like Willis Reed,
07:07 Clemon Johnson, I mean, guys that you go,
07:10 look, Sam Jones from-
07:12 - Earl Monroe.
07:14 - Earl and Pearl Monroe, and Bobby Dandridge.
07:16 So I look at, I mean, it's a plethora of guys
07:19 that played in this league
07:20 that are from historically black colleges.
07:22 We just don't get to do.
07:24 And then why we're in there being physical,
07:26 that's what we do, 'cause we always knew we had to fight
07:29 in order to establish ourselves, even in college.
07:32 And you know that being down there in UNCC.
07:35 And so I just look at it going, wow,
07:38 basketball has been very, very influential with me,
07:43 the way that we play.
07:44 But when I saw that game, after we played you guys,
07:47 we ended up playing, breaking the streak
07:49 with the Toronto Raptors, and they just made this huge trade.
07:53 And you know, we could talk about that, you know,
07:56 OG and Inouye going to the Knicks, and then, you know,
08:00 they get, they're picking up guys like IQ,
08:04 quick, Emmanuel Quigley, and a couple of other players.
08:07 But this is what this league is all about,
08:09 trying to find, you know, where last,
08:12 I think last night was the first time
08:15 it was a high scoring all across the board.
08:17 I mean, a hundred, and we almost had 150 points,
08:21 but this is what the league is looking for,
08:22 it's entertainment.
08:24 - Well, wasn't the entertainment when you played,
08:26 you and I played?
08:27 - It was entertainment when we played,
08:29 but we learned a different brand of basketball.
08:33 You know, Brad, it was like, who's got next?
08:36 We didn't want to take who had,
08:38 we wanted to stay, I had to go on the court.
08:40 And you know, you go like, who's got next?
08:43 That, I want to play.
08:44 You know, it's like, I'm trying to stay on the court,
08:46 and we used to play outside in the street.
08:48 Now it's totally different.
08:51 It becomes, as this league grows, you find guys,
08:55 oh, I got my own trainer.
08:57 Oh, and I got my own nutritionist,
09:00 and oh, I got my own cook.
09:01 I mean, hey, if you can enjoy life like that, that's cool.
09:04 But we had, remember, we grind.
09:07 It was a grind of just even getting in the league,
09:10 or just even a grind to even have something to eat.
09:14 You know, you look at it, you be on the road,
09:17 it's like, now you can go get breakfasts right there.
09:20 But back in the day, you catching a commercial flight,
09:23 our asses was sitting up there,
09:25 eating hot dogs with sauerkraut,
09:27 or some shit like that.
09:29 'Cause I remember Jeff Ruland,
09:30 every time we would go on a trip,
09:33 he would go get a hot dog, sauerkraut,
09:35 and a chocolate milk,
09:36 so he can be stanky as hell on the bus.
09:39 I mean, you remember, Brent, we sit up there,
09:42 we sit up there in first class, and you go,
09:45 oh, somebody just cut one.
09:48 Oh my God, that's nasty as shit.
09:51 - You guys all had to pay for that, huh?
09:53 - Yeah, we all had to pay for it,
09:55 especially if you sleep.
09:56 And then, you know, somebody turn around
09:58 and look at you, be laughing like
09:59 they about to pee on themselves,
10:01 and it's like, man, this is disgusting.
10:03 - This is what I'll say about this league, Joseph Wayne,
10:07 and this is for Ricky Mahon.
10:09 The reason this league is as soft as it is,
10:12 is because of them damn Detroit Pistons.
10:15 They were the ones that made this league soft.
10:18 - Hell no.
10:18 - They had to come up with-
10:19 - Oh, it's their fault?
10:20 It's like that?
10:21 - No, you know what, no, no, Brent, I can't let you-
10:24 - They were protecting Michael Jordan,
10:27 and then the rules of the game changed.
10:29 You guys did not only foul once.
10:32 I love that shit.
10:33 I was telling somebody shit the other day.
10:34 I said Detroit had the shit where they would foul you once,
10:37 but that gave the other dude the chance
10:39 to foul you as well, too.
10:41 You'd be like-
10:42 - You guys would make sure that you guys
10:43 would bring them around, get the fouls going?
10:44 - No, no, the funny thing is that we knew, okay,
10:47 like Dominique would come to the hole.
10:49 Do you remember how Nique would come up to the hole?
10:52 We'd foul him once, and then next year we fouling him again
10:55 because it's like, we told you don't get up in here
10:58 and try to dunk on our ass.
10:59 We're gonna try to, you know, you come here,
11:01 you're gonna feel that floor.
11:02 But it was just a fun, you know,
11:04 it was more of the competition where,
11:08 did we change the rules
11:10 or did you wanna market certain people?
11:13 And then on the league, and Michael was the new generation.
11:17 You know, you'd had Doc who was older.
11:19 You had Bird who got older.
11:22 You had Magic who was getting older.
11:24 Who was gonna take the league to the next level?
11:26 And so, you know, David Stern,
11:27 and I'm saying, okay, this is gonna,
11:29 we're gonna have Michael.
11:31 And then now all of a sudden everything is individualized.
11:34 You know, it's like, it was like, okay,
11:37 well, it used to be, you know, we played the Celtics.
11:42 It was on and popping.
11:43 But now it's like, when I see last night,
11:46 it was a game, Indiana and Milwaukee.
11:49 Now that is like, that's some bad blood right there.
11:54 And Bird, you know it's some bad blood
11:56 when you saw him trying to get the basketballs
11:58 and stuff in there last night.
12:00 Indiana just whooped ass again.
12:02 It's like, damn, man, y'all lost to them four to one
12:06 in the regular season.
12:08 But it's a totally different animal now.
12:11 It's like, you got zones.
12:13 And I be sitting there looking at,
12:15 in college we used to see zones.
12:16 We used to, some people, you know,
12:19 being from the all black college,
12:22 ain't nobody really throw no zone on you.
12:24 But when they did throw a zone on you,
12:25 you gotta learn how to play.
12:27 That's fundamental basketball.
12:28 - Yeah.
12:30 What's something about that,
12:31 what's something about your generation
12:33 that you think carried over to this one?
12:35 If you have to think of one thing in particular.
12:37 - You talking to me or talking to Bird?
12:40 - I'm talking to you.
12:42 - One thing in particular, hey, jersey's just changed.
12:45 You keep going to playing the game of basketball.
12:48 - Just more training?
12:49 - It's just more, right now it's more players empowerment.
12:54 - Shit, if you got training,
12:56 I remember being in the locker room,
12:58 getting ready to go play another team
13:00 and this dude just got traded right,
13:02 it's like he just going from one locker room to the other.
13:04 You go like, yo man, where you going?
13:07 (laughing)
13:09 And he like this, 'cause you know that,
13:11 he like, I got traded over here to Chicago, man.
13:15 Hey, have a good one, good luck, it's called a job.
13:18 Keep getting that money.

13:54 - Let me ask you this.
14:01 Would there ever have been a time in your career,
14:04 and I know, I already know what you're gonna say,
14:07 but would there ever been a time in your career
14:10 that you would have traded jerseys
14:12 with the opposition, with another player?
14:15 - Oh, that's a new question.
14:16 - No, because I couldn't trade a jersey back then,
14:19 we get fined because we only had two of them.
14:22 We had two at home and two away.
14:26 And if you (beep) any of them up, you had to pay for it.
14:29 Come on, Brad, I'm keeping it.
14:31 - Yeah, man, it's time to be in my high school.
14:34 - If you had an opportunity back then,
14:37 and they had extra jerseys like they do now,
14:40 would you have ever traded a jersey with an opposing player?
14:44 - Hell no.
14:45 - Hey, listen, hell no, but the way it is now,
14:48 you can get my, I can take,
14:49 get my damn jersey off the wall
14:51 and sell that (beep) for about three, four grand.
14:54 All depends on if you got the money, baby.
14:57 No, but I mean, in all seriousness,
14:59 hell no, I wouldn't have traded no jersey
15:02 with no other team.
15:02 - I would have loved to have seen you trade jerseys
15:05 with Kevin McHale.
15:06 You or Kevin McHale, or trade with Larry Bird.
15:08 - I would have, look, I ain't,
15:13 listen, I ain't even wanna trade jerseys with my teammates.
15:16 Why would I wanna trade jerseys?
15:17 Shit, you know, man, you know what it is?
15:20 It's like, you know, because of the marketing,
15:24 and all of a sudden it becomes, you know, the collectors,
15:28 and everything becomes, you know,
15:30 like Michael Jordan's Converse Chuck Taylor shoes
15:34 that he had on in college went for a million dollars.
15:37 You know, you look at it, it's like,
15:39 well, it's like, damn, ain't that trash?
15:42 You know, you go like, isn't the bottom of the,
15:45 the things explode?
15:46 What do we used to do? Throw 'em away.
15:47 Now it's like, you know, Kareem goggles,
15:50 or, you know, Worthy's goggles.
15:53 It's like, man, you look at, people be asking me,
15:55 you got some old stuff that you know you don't want.
15:58 And I'm sitting there going like,
15:59 well, how much you wanna pay me?
16:01 'Cause it's like, listen, it's all about money now.
16:05 I mean, your autograph,
16:07 they wanna make sure that you got blood on it
16:09 so you can have it so it can be authenticated.
16:12 And so I got my championship jerseys up on my wall
16:17 and I even got my college jerseys up on my wall
16:20 in my office.
16:20 But it's like, well, how much you wanna,
16:23 it's like, man, if I was like in desperate need of some money
16:26 but then again, I might be like Bill Russell,
16:28 sell all that shit.
16:30 I ain't going nowhere.
16:31 Get all, get your money, get it.
16:33 'Cause if you wanna give me 50,000 for a damn ring
16:36 that costs two, two, two, what?
16:39 Three grand, four grand, or five grand?
16:42 Show me the money.
16:44 (laughing)
16:47 - That's a good investment.
16:47 That's right.
16:48 - Yeah, but even with these jerseys now,
16:50 you gotta look at that.
16:51 They're all authenticated
16:53 because now they got numbers in it.
16:55 The dates and all that stuff.
16:57 And you go like, do I want so-and-so jersey
17:00 'cause my man make some money off this one
17:02 later on in life.
17:03 So you never know.
17:04 Kobe stuff is hot.
17:06 Everybody's looking to have a piece of history.
17:11 - Absolutely.
17:13 - But no, I wouldn't trade my jersey.
17:15 Look, I wouldn't trade my jersey.
17:17 If I was playing today and I had to check,
17:19 man, I don't want nobody's funky ass jersey.
17:21 - Yeah, that's right.
17:24 - Because, hey, hey, listen,
17:26 you don't know we had to wash our shit on the road.
17:28 - Ooh!
17:29 - Some people didn't do it.
17:31 - Nah, some people.
17:32 - I'm sure there was a bunch of people who did it.
17:35 - You know, somebody's asked me.
17:38 I'm gonna jump in real quick
17:40 'cause I'm gonna ask Rick this.
17:42 You were involved in one of the most iconic plays
17:46 in Suffolk history.
17:48 I'm gonna tell you, just wait a minute.
17:50 When you threw the ball off the jersey seats,
17:53 when you guys were playing in the playoffs
17:55 and you were like, yes, sir,
17:58 and it was going the other way,
17:59 take us through what happened after that.
18:03 - Yeah, what's that?
18:03 - I was like-
18:04 - I have to 'cause, man, we, you know, fighting.
18:07 - You know, you were looking at me all crazy
18:09 when I said you were involved
18:10 in one of the most iconic plays.
18:12 You're like, what?
18:13 Yeah.
18:14 - Yeah, he was thinking it was gonna be a bad play or something.
18:16 - I thought it was gonna be a fight or some shit.
18:17 - No, no.
18:18 - Nah, here, Brad, let me just say this to you.
18:21 At that particular time, you know,
18:25 like I said, play defense was what I always did
18:28 and knocked it off of,
18:29 oh, no, I knocked it off of Bird.
18:32 - I thought it was off Jersey seats.
18:34 - No, it was Bird.
18:35 - Okay.
18:36 - And I was pumping my fist,
18:38 but I was looking over there at the bench
18:40 and Chuck Daley was telling me to call timeout
18:43 'cause I'm the guy that takes the ball out.
18:46 And that doggone Isaiah took the ball out
18:49 and I love Zeke to death and his, I'm gonna tell you,
18:52 and he said it, he had a brain fart, whatever,
18:55 but he was, 'cause I'm the one
18:57 that's supposed to get the ball.
18:58 - Now I know what play we're talking about now.
19:00 - Yeah, so I'm sitting there looking, pumping my fist
19:03 and looking at Chuck, Chuck was calling,
19:04 had the timeout high in the air
19:07 and I'm getting turned around,
19:08 I'm about to tell the referee timeout.
19:11 Nope, he took the ball out, tried to get it in to Joe.
19:15 They got DJ, no, Bird stole the ball.
19:19 - Yeah.
19:20 - And then DJ--
19:21 - DJ got the rail.
19:23 That was the argument.
19:24 - And that was game five and it's like,
19:26 sheesh, it's like, damn, we done fought these Celtics
19:30 so long, so long and they were a very good team
19:35 and then finally, then we had to play game six to go home.
19:39 But in that locker room, it was just sad that,
19:42 Isaiah felt really bad 'cause he knew
19:45 I was supposed to take the ball out,
19:46 but I don't bring that up to him all the time.
19:50 (laughing)
19:52 - We had a chance to talk to him about that play
19:56 and he said, man, he said, I felt like shit
19:59 when I got in that locker room.
20:00 He said, everybody just kind of looked at me
20:03 and the coolest thing about it, I think was,
20:06 he was talking about the sixth game that was played,
20:09 I guess, in Detroit and he said, Larry Bird
20:11 dapped him up before the game.
20:13 So, man, it's okay because I think as ball players,
20:16 we have a kinship and we know when somebody's (beep) up
20:20 and we know when great players do what they do.
20:23 But that was so cool for Larry to do that
20:25 and for Isaiah to feel like that
20:28 and for you guys to play the way you did
20:30 in those upcoming games.
20:32 - Yeah, 'cause we had to play game six at home
20:34 and if we didn't win that one, we would have lost.
20:36 But every time we go down there,
20:38 you know I hate that damn leprechaun
20:40 in the middle of the floor.
20:42 I try to kick that shit.
20:43 If I can get over there and just scrape his face off.
20:46 - I'm trying to cower you over in that.
20:48 Yeah, just trying to cower you.
20:49 - No, but you know something?
20:50 It was just the fact that we had,
20:52 the competition we had back then,
20:56 it was never, I don't like Chief,
21:00 I don't like Mikhail, I don't like Brad.
21:03 You know, it's not a dislike, it's just 48 minutes,
21:07 I'm gonna try to kill you because I wanna beat you.
21:10 And it's like, I ain't got no friendship
21:12 with you for 48 minutes.
21:14 Jeff Rulon is my brother, Bill Lambered,
21:17 much as people don't like him, he's my brother.
21:19 But if I have to play, I'm trying to kick their ass.
21:22 And then when we're really friends,
21:25 you're gonna tell me, you know,
21:26 we'll go get something to eat after the game
21:28 or something like that.
21:29 But I never held any ill will to any of the players
21:32 that played in my presence, you know,
21:35 and the ones that played before me
21:36 because I missed the Tommy Heintzens
21:38 that talk all that shit, the Paul Silas's,
21:41 and they be like, I'm sitting there,
21:43 I remember telling Tommy, I said,
21:45 "I wish I had played back, I'd have kicked your ass."
21:47 Tommy was like, he just, you know how,
21:50 "Hey, Brad, you know how he pulled back
21:52 "and them shoulders get back?"
21:53 It's like, damn, I'm done pissed him off.
21:56 I ain't messing with him.
21:58 I don't give a shit.
21:59 I give all the players respect that played before me.
22:03 And hopefully these guys that's playing after me
22:05 get the same respect.
22:07 - So I'm gonna guess that the Celtics,
22:11 was that the favorite team you like to go up against?
22:12 If so, a particular player, if not,
22:15 what's the team of player, your favorite opponent?
22:18 - Well, mine was the Celtics
22:20 'cause I was from Hartford, Connecticut.
22:22 And I got tired of all them in Connecticut
22:24 that were Boston fans.
22:26 Ooh, ooh, ooh. - Stop it, stop it.
22:28 - Oh man, the whole town wasn't cheering for you?
22:30 - Hell no, 'cause they bootless.
22:32 And this is when Brad and them knew my name,
22:34 Ricky, kiss your mama.
22:36 He said, "Kiss your mama, Ricky."
22:40 That leg on dark curly.
22:42 - We got to set that up
22:43 'cause it was such a beautiful moment.
22:45 Rick Mahone coming back to Hartford
22:48 and Celtics fans-
22:49 - Oh, you guys were playing at Hartford.
22:51 - Went on the game down to Hartford
22:53 and the mayor of-
22:55 - No, he wasn't the mayor.
22:57 He wasn't the mayor.
22:58 That was the dark curly who was like the,
23:01 he was like the ambassador.
23:04 - Yeah, well, the ambassador came out
23:06 and the ambassador just says, all of a sudden,
23:08 he says, "Ricky."
23:10 And Rick Mahone's mom was there.
23:11 I would say, he said, "Ricky, kiss your mama, Ricky.
23:15 Kiss your mama."
23:16 And for the rest of the night,
23:18 that's all we would say.
23:20 - Hey, look.
23:21 - Rick Mahone, kiss your mama.
23:23 - Brad, Brad, I'ma tell you something.
23:25 You know, it's funny.
23:27 That's when Larry Bird,
23:28 I think we're in a car together.
23:30 I'm posting him up and he's laughing
23:33 and he was telling me something.
23:35 He was like, 'cause you started that shit,
23:37 kiss your mama.
23:38 And then we planned-
23:39 - You started that night?
23:40 - Hey, listen.
23:41 - I didn't start that shit.
23:42 The mayor of-
23:42 - Hey, they were booing me in Hartford.
23:45 I'm like, "Well, mother I'm from here."
23:48 (laughing)
23:49 Soon as that shit started, I said, "Man, I hate Boston."
23:53 And I ain't like, I was rooting for the Knicks all the time.
23:56 (laughing)
23:57 I couldn't stand Boston.
24:00 Still don't like Boston.
24:02 - He doesn't know-
24:03 - Oh, man.
24:04 Rick's like, "Yo, I'm the best dude to come out this city.
24:07 What the hell is going on?"
24:08 - Here's one of the things I found out about Rick.
24:11 He won't remember this.
24:13 He will not remember this thing.
24:15 But the first time I saw Rick Mahone,
24:17 after a game, I saw him at a IHOPs
24:21 out in Landover, Maryland.
24:24 After the game, up there with a fine light-skinned hunny.
24:28 I was like, "Young fella."
24:30 (laughing)
24:31 I said, "You got it like that?"
24:33 (laughing)
24:34 I said, "You roll it like that?"
24:35 - Hey, listen.
24:36 That's Hampton, baby.
24:37 That was all Hampton.
24:39 (laughing)
24:40 That HBCU ratio was 10 to one.
24:42 I wasn't bullshitting.
24:45 - Man, that girl had not missed a meal
24:49 'cause her booty was woo-wee.
24:51 I was like, "Damn, girl!"
24:53 - And it wasn't one of them pre-fab booties either,
24:57 but it was-
24:57 - No, no, that's bull.
24:58 - What do they call it?
24:59 IBCs or whatever they had?
25:01 - You're right, you're right.
25:02 (laughing)
25:03 - BFFs, I don't know shit.
25:05 - Natural.
25:06 - But nah.
25:07 But it was, you know what?
25:09 Playing against, and what I miss about not playing
25:13 is the camaraderie.
25:15 - Yeah.
25:16 - You know, see, right now,
25:17 you see the camaraderie with me and Brad.
25:20 We can sit down and have a great time
25:22 and just go, and you know, and everybody else,
25:25 it's all about respect.
25:27 - Not when we play, though.
25:29 Not when we play, it's back.
25:31 - Yeah.
25:33 I wanted a piece of that ass every time,
25:35 and I ain't giving a shit.
25:36 - I had never-
25:37 - Do you dislike the way it is today?
25:39 - No.
25:39 Real quick.
25:40 - Just when I never got hit so hard before in my life.
25:43 - Oh yeah?
25:43 - And this is-
25:44 - I wanna hear this.
25:45 - This is black, I wanna see you black now,
25:47 but I won't go there.
25:48 But he hit me so hard,
25:51 and then stood over me, flexing.
25:54 But I tell you what,
25:55 I was gonna get this ass back sometimes at night.
25:58 I can tell you that.
25:59 (laughing)
26:02 - Well, I'm gonna say, you know,
26:04 compared to today's game, I mean, do you think,
26:07 do you dislike that?
26:08 I mean, you got guys going to each other's,
26:10 you know, weddings and stuff.
26:11 They guys, you know, they're hanging out,
26:13 they're working out together during the off season.
26:14 Do you dislike that about today's game?
26:16 - No, I mean, this is what it is.
26:19 It's, you know what,
26:21 as long as it doesn't translate on the court
26:23 where you're playing brother-in-law ball,
26:25 you know, if he comes in there,
26:27 I mean, you ain't gonna hit your friend,
26:29 then I'm gonna hit your friend,
26:30 and then I'm gonna hit your ass in practice the next day.
26:33 (laughing)
26:35 I remember, and I ain't saying no names.
26:38 - Say a name, brother.
26:39 - Fuck yeah.
26:40 - Give me one, give me one.
26:41 - So I'm telling, you know, we playing Chicago,
26:44 Brad, we playing Chicago and I'm with Philadelphia.
26:47 And I'm up here, you know,
26:49 we playing them the next round after I left Detroit.
26:52 And I'm like, all right, we're playing Chicago.
26:56 And we beat them 4-1 during the regular season.
26:58 That's when we won the division.
27:00 And that's my, and I told Barkley, I said,
27:02 all right, next thing, we gotta,
27:04 you gotta hit Michael Jordan.
27:06 No, that's my friend.
27:08 (laughing)
27:11 (laughing)
27:13 - The mother (beep)
27:17 - Brad, you know I went like this.
27:18 Brad, Brad, I went like this.
27:20 I don't, that's a mother (beep)
27:24 I was on a (beep)
27:25 print up for 48 minutes.
27:27 And every time Charles ain't (beep) him up,
27:29 we lost in the playoffs twice.
27:32 And I'm sitting there going like,
27:33 and then Charles gets to the finals with Philly.
27:37 I mean, not with Philly, with Phoenix.
27:40 And they play, they play Chicago.
27:43 And he was, I said, you know, now they don't talk.
27:46 So it's like, you know what?
27:47 You should have hit that mother (beep)
27:48 - Yeah.
27:49 (laughing)
27:51 - These are your real friends.
27:53 Your real friends.
27:53 Look, I'll hit Brad.
27:55 I'll hit Lambeer.
27:57 I'll hit, I'll hit Jeff Rulon.
27:59 But we're going to go have some fun after.
28:01 This is nothing, don't take shit personal.
28:04 This is what we do for a living.
28:07 I don't like all that buddy, buddy shit.
28:09 I ain't helping you up.
28:09 I'd probably kick the shit out of you if I could.
28:12 - You know, here's a great question.
28:16 Did you ever think that Charles Barkley
28:19 was going to be as iconic as he is now?
28:22 'Cause you've seen this growth from when he was in Philly
28:25 to now to being like this bigger than life person.
28:29 - I've seen, I saw it because he was bigger than life.
28:32 When I, when, you know, once the,
28:33 remember when he first got in the Sports Illustrated
28:37 and trying out for the Olympics and, you know,
28:39 he eating all this pizza and they really did a great job
28:42 of, you know, advertising him, the round mound, the rebound.
28:46 And then he gets in the league.
28:47 That was good.
28:49 That was good.
28:51 When I tell you, he get that,
28:53 that tractor trailer truck would be moving
28:56 and he could get up in the end.
28:57 I ain't never see a guy six foot four
29:00 that can jump from a standstill and duck on two seven footers.
29:03 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
29:04 - That's how, you know,
29:06 but I thought he would be as iconic as he is.
29:09 I think it's more to the bullshit that he talks
29:12 'cause he's been talking that bullshit
29:13 since the first day that I played with him.
29:16 And now all of a sudden it becomes, you know,
29:18 it's popular in America's culture.
29:20 And I ain't mad at him.
29:21 Say what's on your mind,
29:22 make all the money in the world.
29:24 Do Charles Barkley, Subway commercials,
29:27 eat fresh, whatever.
29:28 He's the new Black Jared.
29:30 So, you know what?
29:34 I ain't mad at him in his commercials.
29:36 I mean, I respect any of the, I mean, all the players.
29:39 I saw, you know, I saw the other day, Brett,
29:41 I saw the Brad Doherty.
29:44 - Wow.
29:45 - And Brad Doherty and his car racing.
29:47 I was proud of just to talk to him about his car racing,
29:50 you know, diversity outside of basketball.
29:53 I just look, when I even see a Junior Bridgman,
29:56 you know, or Vinnie Johnson,
29:58 guys that are doing stuff that's off the court,
30:01 I'm so proud of that.
30:02 I ain't got no jealousy in there,
30:04 but then I also want to say,
30:06 well, put a brother down.
30:07 I like you Chiefs too.
30:09 (laughing)
30:11 - When you were talking to Brad Doherty,
30:13 does it sound like you're talking to a white guy?
30:16 - No, he country, country boy.
30:18 (laughing)
30:20 Look, he get down there, he's got that country,
30:22 that North Carolinian country, man.
30:25 But I tell you, the boy, the Phoenix,
30:26 I mean, you remember back in the day,
30:28 Cleveland was, nobody mentions Cleveland.
30:32 But they had him, Mark Price,
30:35 Arp, Ron Harper, - Rod.
30:38 - Rod, oh man, and they, them mother (beep)
30:41 was balling back then.
30:42 - I would tell you another dude that is underrated
30:45 was Mike Mitchell.
30:48 That mother (beep)
30:49 - Oh, oh.
30:50 - Mike Mitchell was, now that dude,
30:52 I don't give a damn who you were regarding him,
30:54 that damn jump shot, me and Kevin McKeown talked about that.
30:57 We was like, the dude that we couldn't stop.
31:00 That was that dude that nobody ever talked about.
31:02 I mean, he packed out, that's his soul, he passed away,
31:05 but man, he was a damn scoring machine.
31:08 He would light your ass up.
31:10 - But I'm gonna tell you what disappoints me
31:12 about the new generation.
31:17 They don't look at the past
31:18 and see what the old generation has given us.
31:21 Like I said, I'm excited for these young men,
31:27 but when you look at it, do your homework.
31:29 What was this team before you,
31:32 even before you, before you were born?
31:34 'Cause half of them don't even,
31:36 they weren't even around.
31:37 They have to look on the YouTube to see what I've done
31:40 or what Brad has done.
31:42 When you see us, talk to us.
31:45 We want this legacy to keep going.
31:49 'Cause like you just brought up Mike Mitchell,
31:51 I bring up Marcus and Mickey Johnson,
31:54 them two mother (beep)
31:55 when they were on in Milwaukee,
31:57 you go like, well, damn, then you go Bob Lanier
32:00 or they'll see somebody and say, do you,
32:02 it ain't all about the Dr. J's.
32:05 It ain't all about the Larry Birds.
32:07 It's all about them other worker bees.
32:09 Like I, look, I did my homework on Earl Lloyd.
32:13 I was like, oh man, the first black player
32:17 to ever play in the NBA game.
32:20 Or what did he have to go through
32:22 in order for us to have better, you know?
32:25 I mean, you gotta look at these guys, him and Ray Scott,
32:29 guys that come in this league and say, damn,
32:32 did y'all, you know,
32:34 you see where we're standing at the Ritz Carlton's,
32:36 back then they had to stay where the Negroes only.
32:39 - Yeah, yeah.
32:41 That was something that I talked to Sam Jones about.
32:46 The great Sam Jones with the Celtics.
32:48 He said he was in, I think it was Fort Wayne, Indiana.
32:51 And they were playing,
32:53 and that day- - Playing the Pistons.
32:55 - Yeah, they went someplace to eat.
32:58 And he said, I was faster than anybody else.
33:00 I got my tray and I ran up there
33:02 and I was going to check out.
33:03 And the lady looked at him and said,
33:04 sorry, sir, we don't serve colors.
33:07 And I was like, damn.
33:09 And when he told me that,
33:11 the look on his face was still hurt.
33:14 But it was like, man, it was incredible.
33:18 - Yeah, I mean, if you ever do another, you know,
33:21 if you want me back on,
33:22 but that's what the history of the plight
33:24 of the African-American in professional sports.
33:29 I mean, these young men are staying
33:31 in Ritz Carlton's Four Seasons.
33:34 And then you go back,
33:35 or you're eating in these top flight restaurants.
33:38 But back then you couldn't eat.
33:39 You had to go eat some slop over here,
33:42 or they look at you and call you the N-word
33:45 and you had to sit there
33:45 or you couldn't drink out of the water fountain.
33:47 - Yeah, yeah.
33:48 - Or you couldn't go in the bathroom.
33:50 This is the segregation back then.
33:52 And you go like, damn, they did all,
33:55 that's why when I,
33:56 coming from a historically black college,
33:58 I knew about that.
34:00 You know, knowing that it was black,
34:02 this is black history and I'm built from black history.
34:05 And you go like, we don't,
34:07 at a black college, we don't have the training tables.
34:11 We got to go to the cafeteria just like everybody else.
34:13 And if you didn't get nothing to eat,
34:17 you better make sure somebody on that,
34:19 your floor got one of them grills
34:21 and get you a hamburger or something.
34:23 - Oh.
34:23 - Man, people, I mean, it's,
34:26 that's what I don't like about the new generation.
34:31 They don't understand the history, the plight of the,
34:35 especially the African-American young men
34:38 that are in there, learn your history,
34:39 knowing that someone had to do this
34:41 in order for you to do that.
34:43 - Wow, right.
34:45 Right, well, Rick, I was going to say earlier, man,
34:46 you mentioned, well, we talked about Michael Jordan.
34:49 I was thinking about 2020 and, you know, the last dance,
34:54 how everyone's eyes were glued to the TV every Sunday
34:56 with the world shut down, COVID shut down and all that.
34:59 What was that experience like for you?
35:01 You know, he spent a good deal talking about the Pistons
35:04 and getting over that hump.
35:05 And just what was your reaction overall
35:07 to what he said about the Pistons and Isaiah
35:10 and just the whole thing?
35:11 - Man, I ain't watch that shit.
35:13 16 hours of my time.
35:14 - Come on, Rick, I know you saw segments.
35:16 - I swear, here's my right hand to God.
35:19 I didn't watch that shit and I didn't--
35:21 - Oh, man, during the pandemic,
35:22 what were you doing Sunday night, chilling?
35:24 - Watching, watching.
35:25 I got kids and shit.
35:27 I got, you know, I'm sitting there watching movies
35:30 and shit that I ain't seen in a long time.
35:32 I ain't travel, but I wasn't watching no last dance.
35:36 I'm sorry.
35:37 'Cause the last time I remember
35:39 when I was in a Pistons uniform, I whooped that ass.
35:41 - All right, we'll see.
35:45 - I'll drop the mic.
35:47 I just dropped the mic.
35:48 - Yeah, you dropped the mic, bro.
35:50 Hey, man, man, thank you for coming on with us, bro.
35:52 We appreciate it.
35:54 And I'm gonna see you down the road, man.
35:56 I'll catch you in Detroit.
35:58 - Ain't nothing but love, bread.
35:59 How'd that motherfucker stop calling me
36:01 and texting me and shit like that?
36:03 (laughing)
36:03 - He's a hard-headed, you love it.
36:06 - Hey, he hard-headed.
36:07 You're gonna have to slap me slack.
36:10 - I forgot you was out West, Rick.

36:13 - No shit.
36:15 - We're all in, later.
