WATCH: Everything From Quin Snyder After Hawks Win Over The Spurs
Transcript
00:00 Well, you know, the way that we played in the first half,
00:06 you can have two things happen in a game at once.
00:12 And you can be, really, you can feel really good about a win,
00:18 especially on this day, but you can also hold yourselves accountable
00:24 for not being focused in the second half.
00:28 And I think we played hard, but being focused on the same things that we did
00:34 in the first half, and I want our team to feel good about that,
00:37 and I want us to dig in and figure out how to continue to do that
00:43 throughout the course of the game.
00:44 And to me, that's just the focus.
00:47 It's a collective focus.
00:49 It's no one guy.
00:50 It's all of us, and that's something we've got to get better at.
00:55 Speaking of that first half, you guys held Victor Robaniana to no points.
01:00 Just what was working for you guys to kind of isolate him
01:03 or take him away from the basket?
01:05 The thing about that, the good thing about that is that no one was thinking
01:10 about that.
01:12 We were thinking about the fact that we held the spurs,
01:16 and that's what our mindset has to be because when he's running to the rim
01:22 and throwing it over the top of us, that's not the same guy every time.
01:27 And no one's saying that's my match.
01:29 In fact, it's no one's match.
01:31 It's our match.
01:32 And that mentality is the mentality that we need, that urgency.
01:36 When something like that happens once, we've got to dig in and not let up.
01:41 Coach, when you look at that second half, I know you mentioned focus.
01:44 Is that just a primary thing, or is there several other things?
01:48 I think there were some things that happened in the game.
01:52 You knew the spurs, they play hard, they're connected.
02:00 You knew we had a great first half.
02:03 We played really, really well.
02:05 They missed some shots, and the score reflected that.
02:08 But at the beginning of the third quarter, they raised their level.
02:12 You have to anticipate that that's going to happen.
02:15 It's not so much about it's going to happen, it's how we react to it.
02:20 Sometimes even if you react well, a team is on a level competitively,
02:26 has that urgency because they're behind.
02:29 So I thought they started picking up.
02:33 We got a little stagnant, we weren't moving.
02:35 What that usually means is when I was connected is we need to be on offense
02:40 with everybody helping each other.
02:43 That's really the key for me.
02:47 Okay.
02:49 I got one more.
02:50 Coach, you touched on it a little bit right there, but coming into today,
02:53 that differential by quarter has been pretty decent, every quarter except the third.
02:57 Actually, the strongest one was in the second at about a plus 5.4,
03:01 and then the third quarter is a negative 12.4.
03:03 That's the biggest swing after halftime in the NBA.
03:06 We saw that trend continue tonight.
03:08 Is it more of a systemic thing, or what can you speak to about that discrepancy?
03:13 Yeah, it's obviously something that we're aware of, whether we're 30th or 29th or 26th.
03:20 I think that when you look at how we started the game tonight, that's in us.
03:30 Starting the third quarter the way we started the game,
03:33 but really you can--obviously the third quarter jumps out,
03:37 but I would offer that sometimes it's the 10-minute mark in the fourth
03:42 through the 5-minute mark.
03:44 Sometimes it's the 2-minute mark in the first through those swings for us.
03:48 We've got to get better at not allowing a few plays, a six, eight-point run,
03:57 to turn into a 15-two run.
04:00 So certainly coming out of halftime, that's a specific time where we can focus
04:08 because it's there, but it's nothing that we're not aware of.
04:12 We've just got to lock in to your point, whether we're ahead or behind.
04:17 I think that's the key thing for me.
04:19 We've got to play the same way whether we're down or we've got to lead.
04:24 That's the focus I'm talking about.
04:26 Coach, this is the last one for me.
04:28 MLK game, the Hawks are usually a part of this every year.
04:32 What did it mean to you tonight?
04:33 Dr. Tom Smith is in the building.
04:35 What does this mean for the Hawks?
04:37 It's a celebration.
04:42 Not his life and what he stood for and all the things that he did
04:48 that we have a chance to follow and benefit from.
04:52 Not having lived here for the last decade, I've been here before for a year,
05:00 I have a feel for the city.
05:04 It's a special day for the country.
05:07 I think here in Atlanta, and it doesn't diminish the significance of other places,
05:12 but here in Atlanta, because of the history of the city
05:18 and a lot of other things, it's even more significant, I think.
05:24 At least that's how I feel.
05:26 Same thing within our organization.
05:29 The fact that we get to play today, I'm glad we won.
05:35 It's a good win for a lot of reasons.
05:40 Had we lost, it's still a celebratory day.
05:43 I'm just glad we get to double down with the win.
05:47 It's good for me personally, and I think for our players, our staff,
05:51 and for the Hawks organization to be connected to that with a game at home.
05:56 It's a neat thing.
05:59 It's a good game today, by the way,
06:01 but what does it mean for you personally to coach on MLK Day?
06:05 I remember the first time that I coached on Christmas Day.
06:11 It was Christmas, and that's nice because you get to play on Christmas.
06:20 This is much more significant.
06:22 I think because I'm coaching the Hawks, too,
06:26 if we were coaching another team and you were here,
06:30 I think it's more special and more significant because you're here
06:34 and you feel it, not just today.
06:37 All right. Thanks.
