00:02 >> Coach, today's game felt like there might have been a few more emotions.
00:06 I saw you get your hands up when Kobe drew that charge.
00:09 I was just curious what tonight's win meant for you guys.
00:11 >> Yeah, I mean, that's something we wanna celebrate, these charges.
00:14 I don't know that my reactions are any different.
00:21 There were some things to react to tonight that were really good.
00:24 And obviously the effort we had on the defensive end.
00:29 Yeah, that's a big play.
00:30 Kobe taking charge, we had a few others that we tried to take and
00:35 do again.
00:35 But those are, as I said, that's team defense.
00:40 >> And speaking of that,
00:41 it seemed like everybody played much more connected tonight.
00:44 There was a lot more communication.
00:46 I'm curious what you saw from that that maybe helped you guys pull this out.
00:49 >> Yeah, I mean, we were in the film room for a while the other day.
00:54 And just trying to focus on the things that I mentioned pregame,
00:59 the things that we can control.
01:01 And communication is a big part of that.
01:05 So it was good to see us.
01:09 I mean, not gonna be perfect, but there was definitely a focus on the defense.
01:14 And then I thought, late offensively when they made a run,
01:20 we really were poised and floor was spaced.
01:26 They started trapping, picking them all, got us early on that and
01:29 then we reacted well to it.
01:31 DJ hit JJ in the pocket, made a great move, attacking the rim in that situation.
01:37 And some good things on the offensive end as well.
01:39 >> Coach talking about DJ, he looked like he kept the team in fold.
01:43 I almost had a triple-double.
01:44 What do you think about his thoughts about him running the show tonight?
01:47 >> Yeah, we try to play, we wanna play a certain style throughout the game.
01:54 With the ball moving and playing side to side and also playing pick and roll.
02:00 So finding a balance of that is good.
02:03 And Orlando's really good defensively.
02:06 If the ball stops, they're just so big and you get shifted.
02:12 I thought you saw that early in the game, where we were driving into a crowd at
02:16 all times, sometimes against them, that's really hard.
02:21 You have to make a quick decision before you get in there.
02:24 And those guys trusting each other was good to see.
02:28 And obviously, DJ was catalyst for a lot of that.
02:31 >> One point I saw you go nose to nose with DJ coming into a timeout.
02:36 What was going on there?
02:38 >> I love going nose to nose with him.
02:42 It's usually a good thing or a bad thing, it doesn't matter.
02:44 It's like that communication is important.
02:47 And one of the things that he and
02:51 I have talked about is his discipline on the ball.
02:55 He can make plays, but because of that,
02:59 there's times when he makes a play that it's a lower percentage play.
03:05 If he doesn't make it, it compromises our defense.
03:09 And he can do both.
03:12 He has the ability to defend the ball and also to, like you say, fall into steals.
03:18 And I thought you saw a few of us tonight, we're just getting his hands on balls,
03:21 but he's not out of position.
03:23 And he's mighty in that.
03:26 >> Take us through that 18 to 1 run to close the third quarter,
03:30 obviously, it turned the game around.
03:31 >> Yeah, that group was playing really well.
03:38 And it started on the defensive end.
03:43 We talked a lot about trying to run, but you have to get stops for you to run.
03:48 And I didn't think we were running, there's jogging and there's running.
03:53 And when we run, it opens the court, and particularly against those guys,
03:59 because they are so big, if you can attack them before they get set,
04:02 that's your percentage chance of scoring goes up.
04:07 But again, I thought our defense created our offense.
04:11 And we talked a lot about it, I thought we took the right shots.
04:16 Sometimes even if it's one pass, or if it's a walk up off the dribble,
04:22 DJ had a couple of those, I had a couple of those.
04:24 If you don't shoot that shot, there's a chance you don't get something better.
04:29 And then obviously if you're not open, the ball's got to move.
04:34 >> Coach, Clint Capella, he obviously isn't back to his normal self that he was
04:38 prior to the injury in the time phase.
04:40 Just what are you seeing from him as he tries to get back to his normal form?
04:44 And what's he having to kind of battle through to get back into that shape?
04:48 >> Yeah, I have so much confidence in Clint as a player and
04:53 as a person with his focus.
04:55 And he's close on a few things, and he doesn't need to get frustrated.
05:00 His timing will come, that's hard.
05:03 When you're working your way back from an injury, and
05:06 sometimes it just takes a little time, but we really need him.
05:09 He knows that, his teammates know that.
05:12 And his timing will get better and better as he plays more,
05:19 and I think the conditioning too, that stuff, especially when you're big.
05:23 He's asked to do a lot.
05:25 We've got him out on the floor, he's got to get back, he's got to run.
05:29 And that'll keep him pretty as well.
05:32 >> Coach, I wanted to ask about Kobe and his impact on both sides of the ball.
05:36 He had that nice driving into Bogey, then the outlet pass to Jalen, and
05:39 then a couple steals on Cole Anthony.
05:42 Just what did you see from him tonight?
05:44 >> Well, first, I've said this before, I'll say it again.
05:48 The job that Ryan Schmidt is doing in the D-League,
05:52 we've got so much confidence that when our guys play better, they get better.
05:58 There's still this tendency from everyone
06:04 to think of that as some sort of, you're banished or something.
06:11 You get the first pick in the major league draft,
06:13 they'll go right to the major leagues.
06:15 They've worked their way in, and it doesn't matter if they throw 105 or not,
06:19 you learn how to pitch.
06:21 And particularly for a guard, in Kobe's case,
06:25 a guy that's been a combo in a lot of ways, to have the ball in his hands.
06:31 And when he's playing with, he's gonna play a little differently in College Park
06:36 than he is here, and kind of finding that feel, that pass you mentioned, and
06:41 then the shot.
06:41 He didn't make the one against the zone, but they went under and he shot it.
06:45 I told him, good shot, cuz we believe he didn't make that.
06:49 But the biggest thing is the way he defended.
06:52 That's real, that's consistent, and we know you can do that.
06:57 That's why we have those absolutes, those things that we can do,
07:01 whether we're tired or whatever the case may be.
07:03 And he really moved his feet a couple times.
07:05 He recovered, got his chest in front, and
07:08 then he was able to make some plays too, because he was in position.
07:11 >> Coach, with the injury book, like it is with team,
07:15 what's been some of the message to Kobe and Bruno,
07:17 and to tell these guys about Nick Mano mentality?
07:20 >> Yeah, I think that happens throughout the course of the year.
07:23 And it becomes really real.
07:26 Sometimes when those things are being said, for a player, it's hard.
07:33 You get be ready, be ready, and then you don't play.
07:36 Be ready, be ready, you don't play.
07:38 But pretty soon you play.
07:40 And that's when that work that guys put in is important.
07:43 I've got confidence in those guys.
07:46 They're not gonna be perfect.
07:49 Neither are the other guys out there.
07:50 But they're competing, and that's the biggest thing.
07:53 >> Coach, AJ has two games under his belt, in College Park.
07:58 Just curious if you've seen any of his games or any of how he's-
08:02 >> Yeah, yeah, we actually texted last night.
08:05 And I think he was six for nine from 35 for nine.
08:08 But he was talking about his defense.
08:11 And that opportunity to play, that's how you get better.
08:18 You get reps.
08:19 And he beats there, and Koki's been there.
08:23 Shubruno went down there and played a game.
08:24 Seth has played there, and come up and played.
08:29 So that's a big part of what we wanna be.
08:32 And hopefully, I think our guys understand it.
08:35 I hope you guys understand it.
08:37 All right.
08:38 >> Thanks.
08:39 >> Thanks.
08:39 I'm not talking about it.
